THROUGH THE EYES
C
omes the couture fashion week and pops the question, after all ‘haute couture kya hai?’ Is our ‘haute couture’ of the same standard as the ‘haute couture’ in France, where the ‘couturists’ are recognised and branded by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, after due diligence? It is an interesting revelation that Paris currently recognises only 10 haute couture houses, whereas the Pearls Infrastructure Delhi Couture Week 2010 had presented 13 couturists for exposition. And, this raised a furore in the fashion and media circles.
In India, the concept of ‘haute couture’ has existed centuries before its French counterparts. Since time immemorial, couturists have draped the Rajas and Maharajas in the most elegantly coutured wardrobes and today the most elegant and exquisite bridal wear is being crafted by couturists of repute.

Models Trends OCTOBER 2010
My mind started ticking at this crucial juncture. What emerged was the need to realise and feel that the entire concept of ‘haute couture’ had to be examined and viewed vis-à-vis the Indian scenario. Defined strictly in the French context, ‘haute couture’ stands for high fashion. Haute stands for elegant and ‘couture’ means exclusively made-to-measure finely stitched garments involving high degree of workmanship, detailing and structuring for a particular body. So naturally, any garment produced by a couturist should be exclusive, elegant, exquisite, enchanting, glamorous and should be stitched technically par excellence. Excellent fusion of fabrics; exquisite embroidery and embellishments crafted into unique silhouettes are embedded into the grandeur art form of our bridal wear. Our couturists definitely surpass (that is why in numbers too) their western counterparts in these creations as this form of art comes naturally to them. To my mind, it is easy for our couturists to adapt to the creations of their western counterparts than it is the other way around.

However, to avoid any future controversies, the dire need of the hour is to have a transparent body, similar to Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, maybe with even more stringent standards. It would be in the best interest of our country to try and include jury members of international repute, so as to bridge the gap between the couturists in India and abroad. Given his acumen, I am sure that Sunil Sethi, president, FDCI, who has pioneered the couture movement in India, is already thinking far ahead. The recently concluded Van Heusen India Mens Week 2010 (VHIMW) had 17 fashion designers on the ramp showcasing their projection of men’s fashion in the coming spring summer 2011. The slim fit trousers with narrow cuffed bottoms, varying in length between the knee and ankles were the favourite of many designers. This was also the style adopted by the great showman of Bollywood Raj Kapoor, with his carefree, casual character in his evergreen movies (Awara, Shree 420) of yesteryears. Rohit Bal, as always received rave reviews for his collection, which drew inspiration from a decadent India with a strong ensemble of western sensibilities. Do choose your own style from these collections on our web portal www.modelsntrends.com
It is the time when Commonwealth Games are being held in Delhi and rightly so Shriya Kishore, our ambassador abroad as ‘Pantaloons Femina Miss India Earth 2009’ is on the cover this time. With her confidence and warmth, she is sure to win many a heart. Thanks my dear cover girl for being by my side.
Well buddies, it is time to go and enjoy the Commonwealth Games and the festive season. Adieus and take care!

he brand Hermès entered the world of fashion in 1837, when saddle maker Thierry Hermès founded his company in Paris with the objective to create the finest shaped harnesses and bridles for the carriage trade. Originally running a harness workshop at the Grands Boulevards quarter in Paris, Thiery Hermès created a legacy that would extend to many generations. Soon after its inception, the Hermès house started making a name for itself. In 1855, Hermès earned accolades at the Paris Exposition for being the first in its class, and later the ‘First Class Medal’ of the 1867 ‘Exposition Universelle’.
When Hermès’ son, Charles-Emile Hermès took over the business, he set the trade into retail sales. When his sons joined the business, they helped the company to become reputed purveyors to the most elite clients in Europe, North Africa, Russia, Asia, and America. The first advent of the Hermès handbag was in the form of a ‘haut a courroies’ bag, which allowed riders to carry their saddles with them. 22

After his retirement, Charles Emile handed over the reins of the company to his sons, who renamed it Hermès Freres. They employed 80 craftsmen during this time, and also obtained exclusive rights to use the zipper in their leather goods and clothing. Throughout the 1920’s, Emile-Maurice remained as the sole head of the business. He had an eye for the ever-changing future, and added an accessories line at this time.
While Emile-Maurice was nurturing his sons into the family business, he also added a Hermès line of leather garments, the first being a zipper leather golfing jacket, designed for the Prince of Wales. The Hermès handbag was first introduced in 1922 when Emile-Maurice's wife complained of not having a suitable

one. During 1929, Hermès launched his women's couture line in Paris, following the release of the Hermès purse.
During the 1930’s, Hermès produced some of his most popular goods. The leather ‘sac a depeches’ was introduced in 1935 and in 1937, the Hermès carre (scarf) made a debut. Since then, these iconic scarves have become a favourite of the world's fashion elite, including many members of the royal families. In 1937 Hermès celebrated its 100th anniversary and entered into the U.S. market. After his death, Emile-Maurice Hermès was succeeded by Robert Dumas-Hermès, his relative by marriage. Dumas-Hermès introduced the carriage and horse logo and the well-known orange Hermès boxes. He

was first and foremost a businessman and had a bent towards marketing. In 1956, when the new princess of Monaco was spotted carrying the ‘sac a depeches’ Hermès handbag, he promptly renamed it as ‘Kelly Bag’. The picture of Princess Grace appeared in the Life magazine, and by the late 1950s, the Hermès logo reached renowned status. The company changed hands again in 1970, when Jean Louis Dumas-Hermès took over the reins from his father. He later launched an advertising campaign that took the discreet Hermès name from ‘old people's nostalgia’ to the subject of a young person's dreams. He strengthened the marketing for the fashion house and strove towards excellence. By this time, women were sporting the ‘Kelly bag’ and the ‘Constance clutch’ and their necks were adorned with

Hermès' trademark brightly coloured scarves. Some of the most recognised women in the world, who have carried Hermès handbags, are Nicole Kidman, Paris Hilton, Victoria Beckham, Madonna, and the Duchess of Windsor, amongst others. Bold Hermès jewellery and sensuous cashmeres also added to the sense of class and luxury. Its unisex clothing line is also famous amongst those who want quality and class. The company first created clothing in the 20’s, sportswear also intended to complement the accessories. However it was not until the 50’s that Hermès won a wider male audience for its clothes, when it first launched the printed silk ties.

The Trim shoulder bag: A favourite of former
first lady Jacqueline Bouvier Onassis, this Hermès handbag is very elegant. It boasts of a simple, single strap with a belted buckle and a dainty chain clasp.
The Birkin: Named after model singer and actress
Jane Birkin, this Chanel bag offers sturdy double straps, a simplistic clasp and comes in the traditional ‘envelope’ style.

collections. The menswear range of Hermès was designed by Veronique Nichanian, who designed sophisticated clothing for the company since 1988. The brand is also a member of Chambre Syndicale du Pret-a-Porter. However, after seven fruitful years of creative partnership, Hermès and Jean-Paul Gaultier, decided to bring an end to their collaboration allowing Jean-Paul Gaultier to concentrate on his own projects.
The spring-summer 2011 collection, to be revealed in October 2010, will be the last collection to be created by Jean-Paul Gaultier for Hermès. Christophe Lemaire, who is now the artistic director of Hermès women’s ready-to-wear, will present the fall-winter 2011 collections.
It is always the brand’s principle to strive for perfect products, so as to rule out any complaints. With its image built on extravagant and unique French romantic style, Hermès is always the leader with its supreme handcraft, unparalleled quality and elegant designs. There is no doubt then that you will be drown into the world of Hermès and forget to come back. Its products are like a dream; a dream about uplifting your status and gaining respect of others. World Class Indian Designer
Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla
Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla is a name to reckon with in the Indian fashion industry and is synonyms with luxury. These maestros have been inspired by the traditional Indian art and culture. Using modern silhouettes; they have not only lured the interest of high profiled celebrities across the globe but also adorned the shelves of the international luxury stores. Their creations, be it apparel or interiors, flaunt the greatness, opulence and ecstasy of India and its rich heritage. Using only the finest of fabrics and the best of artisans to create fabulous embroideries and embellishments, the duo creates exquisite collections, which are a work of art. Recently, the couturists returned to rule the ramp after a four year hiatus. They will complete 25 years in the business in 2011. However, their exuberance and designs are still as fresh as ever. Their innovative ideas, impeccable designs and not limiting themselves to a set pattern are perhaps the reason behind their creativity’s youthfulness. These progressive couturists, World Class Indian Designers, this month are the hot favourite of Anup Bhandari, Chief Editor.

Pearl Infrastructure Delhi Couture Week ‘10
• You have returned to the ramp after a long hiatus. What was the reason for this interval? Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla is a label that is synonymous with luxury. We only design couture and were waiting for the right opportunity to present our collection. We also wanted to show our solidarity with FDCI, hence decided to participate in this Pearl Infrastructure Delhi Couture Week ‘10. • How do you see the future of couture fashion in India? India is the best at couture and it is what we do best. Indian fashion is getting recognised by the whole world. For instance, we have designed for international personalities such as Dame Judi Dench, who has worn our creations to the Oscars and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA); Dame Maggie Smith; costume designer Lindy Hemming, who received her Oscar for ‘Best Costume Design' in our Shikargah outfit. • How essential are inspiration and imagination for the success of a collection? What are your sources of inspiration? Our work is always influenced by the Indian inspiration. Our collections are 21st century India in all her myriad glory. • What is the role of style in fashion? What are your favourite garments to present a unique style statement for women? We think style is inherent, whereas fashion reinvents itself every season. The saree is a very elegant garment and definitely one of our top favourites. • Is there any room for west-oriented trends and western wear in your creations or you want to stick to only traditional Indian style?

Our inspiration and work is steeped in the India inspiration but we design for the contemporary women using modern silhouettes.
• Tell us about a fashion trend that you would like to change in menswear and in womenswear? For us, fashion epitomises all things that are great in our country; our crafts, heritage, people; architecture, art etc. All eyes are on India as a leading inspiration for world fashion. Therefore, in our opinion, designers should show them what India has to offer in terms of design and not imbibe from western culture. And this is the trend we want to change. • Fashion is an industry that is full of copycats. How do you feel when people mimic your style and designs? Having been in the industry for so long, we have come to terms with the copycat syndrome, so why bother about it. • What changes do you observe in Indian fashion and
The outfits that they design are so personalised that every other couture pales in comparison. The interiors of my house, which is designed by them, reflect my personality and are exactly what I would have dreamed for myself.

international fashion? Do you think that Indian fashion has achieved the status to make a mark on the global map? Indian fashion is surely making its mark. To illustrate, we have designed for many international personalities. In 2006 Sarah Brown, the wife of then British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, chose to wear ‘Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla’ for her entire wardrobe during her state visit to India. This was a ‘coup of sorts’, considering the fact that she has always adorned British couturiers in the past for all official functions. • You have worked for various celebrities, who do you consider as the best dressed man and woman? It is quite difficult to mention a single name; we have many favourites like Dimple Kapadia, Shweta Nanda etc. • Use of film stars on the ramp during a fashion show has been criticised by many fashion aficionados. What is your stand on it? As seen in our recently concluded Pearl Infrastructure Delhi Couture Week collection, our focus is firmly on couture and, we believe in this. • More and more fashion weeks are happening nowadays. Is this a good trend for designers? We are still far too small an industry to warrant so many fashion weeks. It dilutes both our branding as an industry, as well as strains precious financial resources.

Tell us about your experience of the cover shoot with Chief Editor, Anup Bhandari. How was the shoot different from the others shoots done by you till date? It was actually full of fun. Very relaxing, full of masti and music, yet no sign of tiredness. Mr. Bhandari made me feel very relaxed. His friendly and caring nature appealed me most. Vishal is also a superb person as well as a good lensman. His concept was excellent. It was truly a remarkable experience to work with the duo. What sea changes have you noticed in your life after winning the Pantaloons Femina Miss India Earth 2009 contest? My life has completely changed after I was crowned as Pantaloons Femina Miss India Earth 2009. The victory gave me instant recognition, better prospects and made me a youth icon. However, this success has also brought some accountability towards my country and its people. I wish for a better future for all my countrymen. Was it a cakewalk or an uphill task? What was your first reaction when your name was announced as the winner? Well, any task or contest of such high calibre or level is not a
cakewalk. Winning a contest is an outcome of perpetual effort and hard work, determination, being focused, self-confidence and of course, the support of your family. It has been a while now, so I do not remember how exactly I reacted that time, but it was definitely an overflow of emotions. I was extremely happy on this remarkable day. Did you have any experience of participating in a beauty contest earlier? How did the contest help you in your career in modelling and glamour industry? Yes, I had earlier participated in few fashion shows and contests during college days. However, this contest is only one of its kinds in the country. As I said, it helped me a lot to grow and I think it is the best platform for any model to make an indelible impression in the industry. From the study of hotel management to instant stardom, was it a dream come true for you or anything else was planned? I have a good academic record in study and sports. I wanted to be a hotelier but God works in mysterious ways and here I am today. The day I was selected for the contest, I was pretty sure in my heart about my accomplishment. However, I am thankful to my family members for their support and faith in me.

Today beauty pageants are crowded with many aspirants. Is it because they consider these contests as sure shot for fast fame and recognition or is there something else in their mind? Everyone has his or her own perception to justify a cause. Surely, beauty pageants have lots more to offer and are a gateway to instant fame and recognition. These are the best platforms for an aspirant to make his or her dreams come true. However, the road to glory is full of sweat and toil. What are the essential qualities, which a contestant should possess to participate in a beauty contest? Self-confidence, hard work, a determined attitude and out of the box thinking are the essentials for an aspiring contestant. However, the support of one’s family is also vital for winning a contest. Beauty, brains, good height, physique and fashion sense - what is essential for becoming a good model? All these traits are necessary along with a good sense of humour to solve out the oddness of any situation in this profession. How crucial is a good portfolio for a model’s career? What is the most important thing to keep in mind while getting a portfolio clicked? A good portfolio is very essential for a model’s career. Always remember that it is the key for getting work and recognition. However, your confidence and comfort in front of the camera is the best part for a winsome portfolio. Of course, the role of a
lensman is crucial here because, if you are not at ease with the photographer, you cannot give your best. The shoot environment is also important. What is the one thing, which you would like to change in this glamour industry? Well, frankly speaking I am not a veteran in this industry. I have yet to know the industry through my work and experience, so I cannot suggest any change right now. I am a positive person and believe that everything that happens, or comes across to you has some hidden meaning behind it. I like the industry as it is, and wish to learn more about it. Have you ever suffered any kind of exploitation in the industry? What would you say about the so-called sexual harassment in the modelling world? What can I say about these uncanny happenings? Thank God, I have not come across any such embarrassing situations. What is your view about wardrobe malfunction? Do you think it is a gimmick by which the models and designers catch the attention of media and people? I do not think that it is a gimmick, where a model or designer deliberately makes such odd things happen on the ramp in a fashion show. We, Indian women are very much concerned about our self - respect and it is quite unfair to say that any model will do this knowingly, for the sake of popularity or limelight in the media. Accidents can happen anywhere, be it on the road or ramp. This is our source of bread and butter and we cannot play with it.
Page 40 - 43:Layout 1
9/11/2010
Many foreign models are nowadays a part of the modelling industry. Is it fair to allow them to continue working here, since many Indian models do not get a fair chance to show their talent due to their presence? Comment. Why be biased towards anyone? I am sure that if you have talent, nobody can stop you from flourishing here. You will get work and will be noticed by one and all. I believe that we Indians are capable of living in any part of the world with our noticeable presence. Foreign models have only limited work assignments and cannot outshine our presence. It is not possible for a foreign model to present our culture and art with finesse on the ramp. Only an Indian figure can do this with great fervour. Any funny or untoward incident that you would like to share with us relating to the industry or any fashion event? There are so many such incidents. However, it is difficult for me to decide, as to which one is of the highest level that I can share with you. Who do you think is the ultimate fashion diva and why? I remember so many names, who have defined fashion competently and created new trends. However, it is difficult to mention one particular name. Whosoever has the potential to float a statement is my ultimate fashion diva.

Page 43
Any plan for marriage yet or you want to achieve your goal before entering this domain? Not yet. I am thoroughly focused on my goal and dreams from the very first day I entered the industry. Once I will achieve them, then only can I think about marriage. At present, marriage is not on my cards. What are your future plans? Are you ready for Bollywood? Of late, ramp and fashion shows are my priority. I am also associated with some humanitarian work and want to do something for the poor and downtrodden. I will enter Bollywood only on firm grounds and not only for glamour or media hype. Who is your favourite Indian fashion designer and why? I like the work of so many designers. We have a huge pool of talented designers, so it is not possible for me to mention the name of only one. I like the creativity of Malini Ramani, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Wendell Rodricks, Tarun Tahiliani etc. What is your advice to the aspiring models? Be focused and work hard with dedication. Know what you are and what you can do. Never compromise with your self respect. If you have talent, you will get success. And last but not the least; achieve your success with your family’s support. Take your family members into confidence, before entering this industry.

Hairstyles are a part of today’s fashion and help to flaunt a style statement. Most of the celebrities are known for their unique hairstyle that facilitates them to receive rave reviews from across the world. No matter how au fait you are in fashion trends or how many high fashion garments adorn your wardrobe, if you do not have the right haircut, you cannot have that sought after ‘killer’ personality. So choose the right hairstyle for your specific features and enjoy the attention...

Short hair is definitely in style this winter season and going short is a great way to enhance your persona. Short locks accentuate facial features while making a woman more youthful. With an oval face, you can afford to go short, even super short.
Shoulder length hair is a great way for showing off fabulous features. If you have an oval face, you can get away with any type of short cut, from super short to chin-length but if you are not ready to go short, consider a shoulder length style.
Bangs are totally hot and if you have an oval face, you can get away with all bang types like brow-skimming bangs, long, side-swept bangs, short bangs, heavy bangs, etc. The key to bangs is to make sure that they are not too short. The best bangs are brow-skimming and a bit longer on the ends than in the middle. If you are looking for a change, but do not want to sacrifice length, consider getting bangs cut into your style.
If you have curly hair, the trend right now is to let it go natural. So lay off those flat irons. If you have naturally curly hair, make sure to cut them in layers. And leave them naturally long with a couple of highlights (wine colours).
A sleek, sophisticated bob can never go out of style. If you have a strong chin, a bob cut shorter in the back and angled towards the jaw will show it off. Opt for a striking colour for that wow look.

The secret of a healthy and glowing skin lies in the right kind of care. Seasonal changes deeply influence the skin, especially in the winter season and this is the time when the skin needs utmost attention and care

his dry and cold season reduces the high moisture content in the cells of the skin and makes it dull. However, daily care during the season can prevent this. Clean the normal to dry skin twice a day with cleansing cream or gel. A cleanser containing aloe vera is more beneficial, as it helps the skin to retain the moisture level better. Apply the cleanser and wipe it off with moist cotton wool. Cleansing is even more important at night in winter to remove makeup and other pollutants. Cosmetics cause dryness on the face, therefore, massage the skin lightly with the cleanser and remove it with moist cotton wool. This prevents further dryness. After cleansing in the morning, tone the skin with a rose based skin tonic. Wipe the skin with cotton wool and then pat it briskly. Toning removes the cleanser completely and also stimulates circulation. Use a
Models Trends OCTOBER 2010
sunscreen in the day before going out. During this season, sun exposure can also cause loss of moisture. Most sunscreens have built-in moisturisers and are available in cream and liquid form. For extreme dryness, it is better to use a cream. A liquid moisturiser should also be used before makeup and should be applied before the foundation. Whenever the skin feels dry, apply a liquid moisturiser. It should also be nourished with a good night cream, as nourishing lubricates the skin and keeps it soft. After cleansing, apply the nourishing cream on the skin and massage it with upward and outward movements for three to four minutes. Then wipe off the entire cream with moist cotton wool. Apply an outer eye cream around the eyes and wipe it off after ten minutes with moist cotton wool. Do not massage the skin around the eyes, as the skin can get pulled or stretched. The skin around the eyes

is very delicate and should be treated gently. The skin on the lips is also very thin and lacks sebaceous (oil producing) glands. Thus, it becomes dry and chaps easily. It is extremely important to remove lipstick from the lips every night, using a cleansing gel. Some lipsticks actually have a drying effect on the skin. After cleansing, apply an almond cream on the lips and leave it on all night. This would help to soften the skin. In fact, lip balms are also useful in preventing chapping of the lips and keeping them soft and smooth. Apply almond oil or milk cream as a home remedy everyday. Facial mask is also a part of the skincare routine and helps to remove dead cells and to maintain good condition of the skin. By doing this, moisture retention ability of the skin improves. Nowadays, ready to use masks are also available, however, choose them according to your skin’s requirement. You can also
make a mask at home with wheat bran (choker), almond meal and one teaspoon each of honey, egg yolk and yogurt. For oily skin, add egg white only. Mix together it into a paste and apply on the skin. Wash it off when it dries. Use this mask once or twice a week for a glowing look.
Winter home remedies for skin care
Cabbage and carrot: Cabbage is a rich source of vitamins
and minerals. Boil cabbage in water. Cool this liquid and use it to wash the face. It is good for all types of skin. Carrot is rich in vitamin A and good for winter skin problems. Apply carrot juice on the face for 15 to 20 minutes and wash it off with plain water. Cleanser for oily and combination skin: Add lemon juice and rose water to ripe papaya pulp. Apply it on the face and wash it off after 20 minutes.
Moisturiser for oily and combination skin
Add one teaspoon pure glycerine in 100 ml rose water. Mix and shake well. Keep the mixture in a glass bottle and store in the refrigerator. Apply this lotion on the face to moisturise. It can also be used for the hands and feet.
Cleanser for dry skin
Add two drops of any vegetable oil (olive, til, sunflower oil) in a tablespoon of cold milk. Mix well and dip cotton wool in it to wipe the skin. To use for 4 to 5 times, larger quantities of this mixture can be made proportionately. However, this mixture should be refrigerated for better shelf life.
Honey
Mix honey with one teaspoon of orange juice and apply this mixture on the face to make it soft and smooth. Wash it off after 20 minutes. Honey suits all types of skin. For oily and acne-prone skin, mix one teaspoon honey with one teaspoon curd and add a little turmeric. Apply the mixture on the face and wash it off with water after 20 minutes.
Deep pore cleanser and scrub for oily and combination skin Take half a cup of oatmeal and one tablespoon curd. Mix them together and apply on the face. After 20 minutes, rub gently on the skin and then wash it off with plain water.
Fruit mask for all skin types
For dry skin
Mix half a teaspoon honey, one teaspoon rose water and one teaspoon dried milk powder. Mix into a paste and apply it on the face. Remove after 20 minutes with water. Applying mayonnaise or egg yolk on the skin also relieves dryness.
Fruits like banana, apple, papaya and orange can be mixed together and applied on the face. This mixture suits all types of skin. Papaya is rich in enzymes and helps to cleanse dead skin cells; banana tightens the skin; apple contains pectin and helps to cleanse the skin; orange is rich in Vitamin C and restores the normal acidalkaline balance. Use it in mashed or pulp form. Keep it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then wash it off.

Choose the right salon... the in-depth‌
Not all five star salons are good and not every customer knows how to make the most of the visit to a beauty salon. Here is a useful guide, which will help you to understand what you should look for in a parlour for your beauty needs...
I
t is common belief that only a branded salon can provide a complete technical and hygienic service experience. No matter how posh a salon, if it does not keep up with appropriate health and safety norms, it can become a regular breeding ground for harmful bacteria and germs. So, here are a few pointers to keep in mind before selecting the right salon for your hair and beauty treatments. Warm customer service: The salon should value its business and not act as if they are doing the customer a favour. One should feel welcomed. Hygiene: Look for a salon that is clean, comfortable, conscientious and capable. Do not be afraid to inquire from 60
n
Models Trends OCTOBER 2010
the beauty professional about the services at the salon.
Grooming: A professionally groomed technician is sure to
take good care and give proper attention to you during the entire service regime. Jeans, flip flops, chewing gums and heavy metal accessories are completely avoidable. Distinct respect is shown for the customers if the technician presents himself in a decent and dignified disposition.
Hidden dangers at the salon
All salons do not pay attention to hygiene, therefore it is quite probable that you might end up with a serious infection during your visit there.

Nail station
Bacterial, fungal, yeast and viral infections (including Hepatitis C, Staph infections and warts) can be transmitted through unsanitised hands and instruments. This can happen with overzealous manicuring, if too much of the cuticle is cut or pushed back too far.
Solution
• Do not allow the technician to cut your skin with either a cuticle clipper or a credo blade (used to remove callused skin). It is illegal abroad, though not yet in India. • Instruments should be cleaned and disinfected before every usage. The ideal method is to use surgical spirit and then autoclaving (heat sterilisation). The implements such as nail files and cuticle sticks should be sterilised in the chemical solution for at least 10 minutes. • In addition to cleaning their tools, technicians should also ensure that their workstation is properly cleaned after servicing
every client. Dettol spray should be used to disinfect the area, so as to prevent the spreading of germs and bacteria. • Every customer should be given a fresh bowl of soap water to soak their nails. • Whirlpool footbaths have screens under the drains that trap hair, skin and other bits of debris, thereby creating an environment for bacteria to breed. Insist on using a plastic footbath only and have your technician line it with an unused plastic bag. If you have cuts, bug bites, scratches, scabs etc., then refrain from using footbaths as the micro organisms breeding here can cause serious infection. • Ideally, a new buffer and file should be used for every new customer. If that is not the case, then take your own implements. • Do not shave, wax or use hair remover creams, two days, prior to getting a pedicure as these areas become more prone to infections
Ask yourself the following questions when you enter a salon...
lon

• Is the salon and individual workstations clean? • Does your nail technician observe proper sanitation practices? • What is included in the price of the service? • Does the nail technician explain the service to you, ask you questions about your needs, and inform you of proper home care? • Does the salon have a strong odour? • What products are used in the salon? • Are the technicians certified? • Is the salon licensed?

• Before the start of manicure or pedicure, confirm that the technician has washed and sterilised the hands. • Make sure that the salon has a valid license from an aesthetician, which is displayed properly.
Hair station
Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of staph infection that is hard to treat, since it is resistant to antibiotics. Everyone has bacteria on their skin (including staph), but you and your body live in harmony with it. However, it is easy to transfer this to another person through an open sore and is a matter of grave concern. The infection can be as simple as little irritation around a hair follicle, or as severe as an infection that could lead to serious illness. In addition, one can also pick up lice and various other fungal infections 62
n
Models Trends OCTOBER 2010
Page 62
like ringworms through unhygienic conditions in a hair salon.
Solution
• Any used instruments like brushes, combs, scissors and razors have to be sterilised for every client. If scissors are not properly sterilised and come into contact with bacteria, germs can grow and live on the scalp. The sterilisation solution must be changed regularly. • Make sure sinks are cleaned after every usage and that a freshly cleaned towel is used. • Look around to see if the facility is neat and clean. Salons that have hair, nail clippings, dust or debris on the floor and tables are sending a clear message that it is time to find a new salon. If the washrooms are dirty and lack liquid soap and clean towels, it means that the technicians are not washing their hands properly.
• Excessive heat from hair dryers reacts with chemicals used in hair dye, hair straightening, permanent wax and hairspray to give pungent fumes. If the salon is not properly ventilated, it can cause headaches, asthma or allergies. • Make sure that the robes and towels are washed after every use. Lice are commonly infested in salon and breed in dirty brushes, robes and towels. • Dirty electric razors should not be used, so as to avoid fungal infections like ringworm etc. • It is important to make sure that the hair stylist does not have any sores or cuts on the hands.
Waxing station
Skin infection may occur from unclean wax or non-sterilised waxing areas. Double-dipping
with the waxing stick can also lead to contamination.
Solution
• Ensure that a new waxing stick is used each time, while dipping into the tub of wax. If not, then bacteria can contaminate the entire container of wax and seed it with infectious organisms. These bacteria can then be transferred onto your skin. • Make sure that the technician is wearing gloves. • All beds should be covered with disposable sheets. • The puffs used for powder application should be disposable. Plain simple cotton used as puff can also be sufficient. • Avoid extreme temperatures post waxing because this may irritate the skin. Avoid using fragrance like perfumes, soaps and deodorants.

The woman’s best friend has come of age and has moved on to contemporary style and designs from the traditional ones, thereby maintaining its grandeur in the society...
T
oday’s traditional jewellery precisely follows the phrase, ‘old wine in a new bottle’. It has been mesmerising women with a blend of traditional touch and trendy designs. Although traditional jewellery will always be close to a woman’s heart, yet today’s new age India cannot be defined as traditional. A desire to unfetter traditional symmetry yet to engage with the fashion of ancient time, has enabled jewellery to boost one’s status symbol and to enhance one's personality.

both, the traditional wear and the crispy attire. However, this twist in the retro-style with contemporary fashion is garnished with precious stonework, kundan, enamel and conch shell work.
Prevalent trends
Fashion jewellery is rapidly making a mark amongst the young generation as today’s working women want to make a style statement. Expensive jewellery is reserved for special occasions, thus, fashion jewellery works best with the daily wear.

Long chandelier earrings are on the way out. Stubbies are getting to be increasingly more popular. Rubies and emeralds are already the all time favourite. Big studs are also making a comeback with champagne diamonds and rose cuts. The contemporary jewellery in geometric shapes and chunky look is making headway into the world of fashion.
Summer season calls for being minimalistic, whether it is makeup or jewellery. Opt for pearls during summer. Jade and pink opals also look refreshing during the daytime. However, the selection of jewellery depends upon the occasion. If you are getting ready for a party, then probably a lovely pair of earrings with a cuff on your wrist will work well. Diamond earrings will look great for cocktails. However, to bring out the best in a saree or a salwar kameez, opt for a pair of jhumkas. There is no better piece of jewellery to garnish beauty than a beautifully crafted pair of jhumkas.
clasps and locks to see if these are in proper condition. Visit the jeweller, if any jewellery needs attention. Do not try to repair the expensive jewellery at home. Most trinkets need little care. Clean them with a soft cloth and they are ready to dazzle. Diamond jewellery can be soaked in soap water; cleaned with a soft brush; rinsed and dried with a dryer. However, jadau jewellery needs special care. Always keep it wrapped in a clean mul-mul cloth and then in a zip lock. Pearls also need to be wiped clean with a soft cloth every time these are worn. Always check the jewellery

How does it feel to be the number one male model in the fashion industry? Is there any shortcut to success in this industry?
It is really a great feeling but I do not consider myself number one, because I still have a long way to go. Categorising in a particular number means creating boundaries on my potential, which I think is not logical. There are no short cuts in any industry, neither in the fashion industry nor in the entertainment industry. Hard work, dedication and ability only helps to reach the top.
How did you get a chance to show your talent as a model and then as an actor?
It was not my dream to be an actor. In fact, my dream was to become a fast bowler but for some reasons I had to stop playing cricket. I was always keen on modelling along with cricket, which started happening but then I had to leave for Australia for further studies. I did an ad at the age of 17 for Cine Blitz magazine before leaving for Australia. When I came back during a break to see my family, I did a fashion show for Marc Robinson for Guess brand. This was my turning point.
How tough is it really to prove yourself in the industry without any godfather or filmy background?
Yes, it is tough unless you are totally focused on your talent. For me, acting now has become my passion and I want to utilise this talent in the best way. So your focus should be in the right direction without any shortterm temptation. A hard working and talented person will definitely succeed.
What did you find more challenging - walking the ramp or acting in front of a camera?
Well, I find both equally challenging,
but yes, being in front of the camera has more demographics attached to being good at it.
How do you see modelling as a profession?
People who are not a part of this profession would think that this is child’s play. I have worked in several fields. I have worked in the marketing and sales industry for an I.T. company, where the challenges are different as compared to modelling. Modelling for me is very challenging as we are marketing ourselves as a product. So you can imagine the self generated pressure.
What changes do you observe in today’s modelling industry, where the entry of the youngsters is higher? I notice that nowadays lots of people want to become models and get into this industry, even though they might not be fit for it. They generally use the profession as a platform for either their acting career or just to be a part of the glamour industry. Today, the work is far less than the availability of models. The future is bright but the competition is going to get tougher for the new entrants.
Do you think that nowadays good looks and good physique helps to excel in this field?
Good looks and a good body can give a good start up. However, later on it is the human characteristics and professionalism that takes you towards success.
What are the pros and cons of this profession?
It is a wonderful industry to be in and has a lot of advantages. I have travelled a lot in this profession and made alliances with amazing people. Of course, business opportunities have also risen through extensive travelling. The disadvantage is that you are a

product and always remain under the microscope. For some people, it is pressure and stress but for me, it is about turning around disadvantages into advantages.
Is a parallel career option necessary for models?
If someone, who depends on modelling only and does not want to move into any other line close to modelling like hosting shows, endorsing, acting etc., then undoubtedly a parallel career is a must.
Tell us about your Bollywood projects? What kind of image do you prefer, action or romantic hero?

but here I do not want to reveal them just now. I will inform you soon. To be honest, I just want to work and keep the quality of my work as high as possible. I would like to be a romantic hero with great action shots in the film.
Are you also interested in foreign or Hollywood films? Which one would be your priority and why? Currently, Bollywood is my priority as I live here and my family is here. I love my good Bollywood movies. I can always go to Hollywood after or during my career but it cannot happen the other way. Once you are in Hollywood, you are less likely to come back. So both ways, if it goes as planned, I win.

Sexy s rens of Bollywood They came, they saw, they conquered…Their gorgeous looks; seductive smile, sculpted body and bold attitude captivated the heart of many a cinema aficionados. Their presence on the screen was enough to accelerate the heartbeat of the audience. They adorned the bedroom walls of many a fans and even warmed up their pillows. Whistling sound, floating kisses and tinkling coins in the theatre measured their popularity and praise. However, life seems ruthless for these sexy deities… Bindu: The seductive ‘Mona Darling’ with her husky voice,
photogenic face, flawless complexion and sharp features hit out at the myth that married actresses cannot become sex symbols in Bollywood. Her sizzling cabaret dance, ‘Mera Naam Shabnam’ in the movie Kati Patang is still ranked as one of the hot numbers of Hindi movies. However, this heartthrob of cinema lovers is nowadays living a low profile without any offsprings and a handful of insipid appearances in films. Dusky Rekha has always received rave reviews, not only for her flawless acting but also for her slim slender looks, mesmerising eyes and charming voice. Her success was not a cakewalk, as she had to work very hard to transform her persona, which is visible in movies like Umrao Jaan, Utsav and Khoon Bhari Maang, amongst others. However, it is an irony that this talented lovely lady could not find the love of her life. She now lives a solitary life with her secretary and pets in Mumbai.
Rekha:
Dimple Kapadia: She created ripples in Bobby with
her bold act at the tender age of sixteen. After a decade, Dimple sizzled yet again on the silver screen in Saagar with a stunning striptease scene near the sea beach. Her sex appeal in western clothes was a mind boggler. Movies like Janbaaz and Pyar Ke Naam Qurbaan added more flames to her sexy and 78

glamourised appearance. Nowadays, this elegant actress is busy with her candlesticks business and living alone and away from estranged husband Rajesh Khanna.
Zeenat Aman: This Miss Asia Pacific title holder and
the sex symbol of the 1970-80’s brought the western look to the Indian cinema. After a successful stint in modelling, she

began her filmy career. Her hip looks in the movies Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Yaadon Ki Baaraat made her very popular and her sex appeal in the movies, such as Satyam Shivam Sundaram and Qurbani won the hearts of millions of fans. After the death of her husband, she now lives with her two sons but is rarely seen on screen.
Parveen Babi: This gorgeous Bollywood
diva was the first Indian actress to have featured on the cover of Time magazine. With an array of blockbuster movies, Parveen was known for her impish smile, finely chiselled body, lilting voice and western lifestyle. Her sensual screen presence in the movies like Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony, and Namak Halal was extremely noteworthy. Similar to her contemporary Zeenat Aman, she was also known for her portrayal of revolutionary women, who did not care about the conventional norms. Alas, her mental illness forced her to live a life of isolation and after her death; even her dead body was laid unclaimed.
This blue eyed girl created a stir with her debut in the movie Ram Teri Ganga Maili, directed by ace filmmaker Raj Kapoor. Her breasts shown subtly during a bathing scene under a waterfall draped in a gauzy white saree and then breastfeeding a child is what instantly created waves and made her an instant sensational sex symbol. However, the life of this gorgeous starlet became hell after her so called liaison with mafia king, Dawood Ibrahim. Today, she lives an unperturbed life with her husband and son in Mumbai and teaches the doctrine of Buddhism.
Mandakini:
Hong Kong based fashion and beauty magazine ‘Cover’ voted her as one of Asia's 100 most beautiful women. Mallika made her on screen debut with a music video and created a roaring sensation with 17 kisses on screen in the movie Khwahish. She has appeared in movies like Murder, Pyaar Ke Side Affects, Kiss Kis Ko and international flicks, The Myth and Hissss. Her sizzling item numbers in Guru and Dasavatharam were widely appreciated. However, the ambitious hottie has faced hostility from her family and estranged husband.
Mallika Sherawat:
The list of sex sirens of Bollywood does not end here as many new cuties are continuously joining the race to allure the wooing hearts out there. Actresses like Neha Dhupia, Celina Jaitley, Riya Sen, Sherlyn Chopra are the ones in the horizon. Go ladies go! Sex is and will be the best seller, be it time now, or be it time immemorial….

I foresee ceramic watches as the latest trend to watch out for in the fall - winter collections. Ceramic is a modern age material that watch connoisseurs value greatly for its light weight, scratch-resistance, durability and tactile feel. However sleek, neat and classic designs will never go out of fashion. Lots of colourful strap watches are also in vogue.
Courtesy: Emporio Armani
Always buy a watch related to your lifestyle. Avoid matching a sporty, rubber strapped, digital display and multifunctional watch with an official dress or party wear. These watches are not stylish and only have lots of functions, which are perfect only with casual wear.
Choose metallic
Nowadays, a stainless steel strap is more in vogue than a leather one and is certainly more durable. It looks classy with a business suit and casual enough for other occasions. Avoid gold plated watches and go for either steel or titanium bracelets. Choose a dark or bright coloured watch in these metals to spice up your persona.
Go for big dials
The size of a watch dial is vital. A standard watch dial appears dwarfed on a big sized wrist.
These days watch makers are producing bigger dial watches to adorn the wrists of fashion aficionados. No matter whether you are a big guy or not, big dials have a great look. So opt for a bolder and more distinctive look.
Water and resistant
shock
These are two important features to look for while purchasing a watch. These qualities protect it during rainy days and from a sudden wet or hard surface. However, be sure to find out the shock and water resistance levels, as this can vary with different watches.
Avoid odd colours
Watches are available in exciting coloured dials and straps. However, for a classic wardrobe, stick to the tried and tested colours that will blend and look appropriate with a business or formal setting.

Select your watch according to your working environment. For a casual look or for college going guys, a bigger dial with sporty straps in blue, white and fuchsia colours is perfect. Choose sleek and sophisticated watch in either metal or leather strap for official wear, but it should not be too flashy. Try to buy a watch that can be worn everywhere, just by replacing the strap. Attract wealth with Feng Shui
Feng Shui, pronounced as ‘fung shway’ literally means ‘wind’ and ‘water.’ It is the Chinese metaphysical art and science of creating an environment around you to gain full support of the universe, so as to manifest your desires... by Ankush Modawal, Feng Shui practitioner
T
housands years ago, these techniques were used by Chinese emperors to attract massive wealth but this knowledge had been shunned from general public. However, if something is worth hiding that means it is powerful enough to change lives. Wealth and money do not mean the same thing for everyone, but money is surely a big part of being wealthy. Here are six Feng Shui tips that will keep pouring the moolah in.

Models Trends OCTOBER 2010
Remove clutter
Look around you. Do you see things piling up? An unattended pile of anything means pending projects, bottlenecks, unpaid bills, unnecessary stress and miscommunication. Cast a look at your closet and drawers. If your cupboard is jam packed, you have a lot of soul cleaning to do.
Page 84 - 85:Layout 1

Brush it off
The dust that accumulates on different things in your house brings nothing but negativity. Keep the things around you always clean, shining and polished. The cleaner your environment, the sharper your mind and better the ideas will start to flow towards you. Clean your home everyday and feel the difference in the energy around you.
Repair or replace
The things around you that need to be repaired or replaced represents energy wasted, as a result of ‘things not working’. It is best to replace them and bring in new things. If replacing them is not possible, then get them repaired and keep them in proper working condition, even when you are not using them
Burn it up
Make a wish list
Ask yourself the most important question, “What do I really want?” Do not rationalise or think about what you can or cannot have, just think about your heart’s desire and write it down. Everyday, take small steps to achieve this idea, and take decisions based on where you want to be in life and what you want, rather than those based on where you are and what you do not want.
Check your stove in kitchen. More number of burners in your stove means more sources of income for you. It is essential that you do not use a particular burner and use all of them equally. Too much strain on a specific burner means burden on a particular source of income. An unused burner symbolises untapped resources thus, aim for a balance.
Feeling like a million bucks
What most people do not know is that becoming wealthy or rich is nothing but the richness felt by them in their life! The universe responds to your feelings and even if the wealth you want has not manifested; if you just get into the vibration or feel the emotions, you will feel that what you want has already manifested, you will begin to attract it. So today, make a conscious deliberate effort to feel, as if your dreams have already come true!

However, the petite actress now claims that she did not undergo a makeover to reinvent her career. “People thought that I underwent a make over to get more roles. I find it very funny because it is not true. I have no problem with my image,” says Amrita. The Brazilian sensation, who has a baby son, is very excited about this new discovery, so much so that she has even called for a worldwide law to ensure that new mothers breastfeed their babies for six months at least after birth. However, her comments have angered health experts in Britain because not all new mums are physically able to breastfeed. Now who says that all beauties do not go astray.
Shahid Kapoor is certainly a talented actor but is quite unlucky when it comes to romance. Recently, the cupid ignored his attempt again, while he was shooting for his dad’s movie Mausum with co-star Sonam Kapoor. As the shooting was about to end, dad Pankaj Kapoor came up with the bright idea of a steamy kissing scene between both stars. There are rumours that it was Shahid, who had proposed this idea to the ever obliging papa. However, Sonam point-blank refused to do the scene, as it was not a part of the original script. Poor Shahid missed the bus again.

1. Anjaana Anjaani Love by chance
1
This romantic comedy by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment is directed by writer turned director Siddharth Anand, who has directed some successful Bollywood movies, like Salaam Namaste, Ta Ra Rum Pum and Bachna Ae Haseeno. The lead stars are Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Zayed Khan. The story narrates two hapless persons, who meet each other at a point of time when they are going to commit suicide. How love blossoms in their lives, is interesting to see. The music has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar, who have composed music for Siddharth's three previous films.
2. Run Bhola Run Chase the luck
2
This thriller comedy by director, actor and storywriter Neeraj Vora has been tangled in turmoil since inception. First the title of the movie was changed several times; then actor Govinda got into an altercation with the director and other stars; subsequently the release dates kept on being shifted due to one pretext or another. However, the film is finally ready to woo (or woe?) the audience. Starring Govinda, Tusshar Kapoor, Amisha Patel, Celina Jaitley, Rahul Dev and Sharat Saxena, this movie revolves around two convicts, who escape from the prison. However, the director (like all of them who came before) claims that the film’s title is not inspired by Hollywood film Run Lola Run.
3. Action Replayy A reverse journey
After the success of Singh is Kinng, actor Akshay Kumar and director Vipul Shah have teamed up again for this movie. The plot is loosely based on the Oscar nominated film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Vipul is also the producer and story writer of the movie and raves that he wrote the script before the famous Hollywood version. This movie is filmed in the era of 70’s to the present days. It opens with a 62-year-old Akshay, who is shown ageing back 26 years. The Akshay- Aishwarya combo is making a comeback after five years. Let’s see how the audience reacts to their chemical effervescence?
4. Golmaal 3
Laughter bomb
3
Many Bollywood filmmakers have tried to fly high through the sequels. However, none have made a mark like director Rohit Shetty, who is ready with the third sequel to his blockbuster movie, Golmaal. Starring Mithun Da, Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Khemu and Johny Lever, this comedy is set out with rib tickling guffaws. Interestingly, this is the only Bollywood film whose third part is being made. Not only this, but its stars will also be seen flaunting a new look. Kareena Kapoor will be seen in a tomboy role while Ajay Devgan will sport a rugged hairdo and tattoos. Both the earlier sequels were a big hit at the box office. Will this sequel repeat the history?

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1
1
Fairy and fearsome
This two-part adventure fantasy by Warner Bros. Pictures is directed by David Yates. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Ralph Fiennes, Bill Nighy and John Hurt, the first part of the movie begins with Harry and his friends setting out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret of immortality. Based on the novel of the same name by J. K. Rowling, these two parts are the final instalments of the popular Harry Potter franchise. David Heyman and David Barron are the producers and the screenplay is written by Steve Kloves.
2. Conviction
Hope sustains life
What would you do if your loved one is sentenced to prison and you are damn well sure of his innocence? This crime and drama thriller is an inspirational true story of a sister's unwavering devotion to her brother. Based on the life of lawyer Betty Anne Waters, the leading stars of the movie are Hillary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver and Melissa Leo. Director Tony Goldwyn and screenwriter Pamela Gray has impressively mingled the substance of agony, belief, optimism, determination and victory in this amazing story. Sure to keep the audience on the edge of their seats!!!
3. Secretariat
2
Nothing is impossible
This drama by Walt Disney Pictures is based on an incredible true story. The movie narrates the spectacular journey of a racehorse and its owner. The film is adopted from William Nack's book Secretariat: The Making of a Champion and William was also a consultant for the making of this film. Versatile director Randall Wallace has not only captured human efforts and emotions expressively but also the altruistic love of an animal towards its caretaker. Starring Diane Lane and John Malkovich, this movie could well be a money spinner.
4. Faster
Action unlimited
A stint in a prison usually breaks down a prisoner or makes him stronger. This action thriller by director George Tillman Jr. revolves around this premise. This movie is a comeback for Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) to the action genre. Dwayne had earlier tried his hand at comedy but did not got the same success as he received in the action ones. Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Carla Gugino, Maggie Grace and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, the plot revolves around a prisoner wanting to avenge the murder of his brother. Armed with a list of names and addresses, he wriggles out of the prison gates for his do or die mission.
