Models Trends JULY 2009

here was a time, when Mumbai was considered as the ‘most happening place’ for parties, events and fashion shows but nowadays, saddi Delhi has outshone the mayanagri. The capital’s day life though, is full of hustle and bustle but the nights are really delightful due to new takeoffs, fashion parties and contests. If we talk about fashion happenings, Delhi tops the list. Two luringly marvellous fashion weeks, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) and Delhi Fashion Week (DFW) were held in March ‘09 and now ‘Van Heusen India Mens Week’ is scheduled for Sept. 11th to 13th. This is the first one of its kind show by FDCI. Kudos to the President Sunil Sethi. Another of our advisors, Rohit Bal is making all out efforts to forge better ties between the DFW and WIFW and its about time. Maybe the fabric will tear no further and the local mushrooms (Kolkata Fashion Week and Bangalore Fashion Week) will take heed and the fashion designers could explore more advantages mutually without cut throat competition. My best wishes to him for a task that is difficult but not impossible. From the fashion point of view, India has surely become a rewarding and happening hub for foreign models. Many of them are now here to stay and have regular work permits. Maybe it is the right time to recognise their presence. Seeing them perform at many fashion events, I feel there exists a definite need to integrate them into our system and open our doors. What say my Indian dahling models! Not only our fashion but movies also are making a mark on the global map. MnT advisors, Gurbir S. Grewal and Sandeep Marwah’s film, Coffee House has been selected to be shown at Cannes Film Festival in the Indian Panorama Category. The movie is directed by Gurbir S. Grewal and is produced by Sandeep Marwah. Incidentally, this is Marwah Studios’ first commercial production. My heartiest congratulation to both the director and producer. MnT advisor Yuri is as usual busy with another new movie, What’s Your Raashee?, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and starring Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja. We too at ModelsnTrends have done our bit in promoting our brethren on the other side. Our article, ‘Ga mere man ga…The sa (re) ga of gays’, published in our May 2009 issue surely proved to be a lucky mascot as the Delhi High Court has struck down the provisions under section 377 of IPC. Let’s see what happens now as the Yoga Lord Baba Ramdev has challenged the decision in the higher courts. Surely, he is going to lose out on this population of disciples. To meet the requirements of the fashion and entertainment industry, it is heartening to note the influx of fresh talent, which perpetuates energy and novelty into the system. New and promising models are entering into the industry everyday to explore new horizons. Complete portfolios of a large number of these faces appear in the models gallery on our web portal www.modelsntrends.com. The portal also features daily fashion news, entertainment news, events happening in Delhi and Mumbai; collections of top fashion designers and top fashion brands along with our monthly E-magazine, which is now fully readable. You can read each and every page of the magazine and can zoom the pictures for finer details. With over 15000 hits a day on our web portal www.modelsntrends.com, we are planning to open up some more exciting venues. Well dahlings! It is time to go out and enjoy the raindrops falling on your head but do not forget your umbrellas.

tyling is a potent weapon to highlight fashion nous. No matter how expensive or fashionable clothes you put on but unless they are able to present a fashion statement, they are ineffective. Engrossing style, cool dresses, appropriate makeup, jovial mood and above all, a skilled lensman completes the picture perfect.

This time, ace lensman Rahul Dutta focused on gorgeous model turned actress Ritu Singh. Her beauty and panache are completely depicted and enhanced by Rahul’s camera, Steve’s styling and Kajee’s makeup. The result on the cover is apparent – the shot came out as stylish as was conceptualised. You will see more about her moods in an interview on page 33.

At last, their unconventional approach landed them in Milan's ‘New Talent’ fashion show. Since then, there was no looking back and in March 1986, they launched their Dolce&Gabbana women's collection. Both designers have successfully blended their heritage into their designs to create sexy clothes for women, who want to revel in their voluptuous femininity. Unlike many designers, they do not design for stick-thin models rather real women, with hips and breasts have remained their priority. Similarly, their Dolce&Gabbana men's collection set forth the man, who is a little hedonistic and pays considerable attention to details. Both lines have been considered as international bestsellers and their celebratory dresses are still much in demand. Madonna, Monica Bellucci, Isabella Rossellini and Kylie Minogue are the die-hard admirers of their stylish dresses.

They are famous for mixing the style of male and female clothing. According to Dolce, "We have different tastes, which mean that together we tap a combination of desires. Sometimes, we might create something that is more Gabbana; sometimes it might be more of Dolce." They both love the style and feel of southern

Italy. Most of their designs are drawn from this tradition. Muted shades of earthy brown beside black, white, gray colours with flashes of scarlet to produce modern-day versions of Sicilian bandits, bandannas around their necks, and bikers in tattoo-covered leather jackets, lightened by the leggings are used widely by the designers to interpret their sensual and unique style. They are also famed for sensual advertisements to promote their brand.

Avoid that!

Six fashion faux pas in men’s wear Everybody wants to be trendy. It is a matter of pride for a man, especially to be known amongst peers as dashing and fashionable. We love to be fashionable and therefore, follow fashion trends without knowing that sometimes they do not gel with our personality. Here are some common mistakes that can be avoided.

T-shirts

Loose fitting clothes

The selection of the correct size in clothing is the biggest problem for men. They often follow and choose desirable colours or designs while shopping but compromise on the correct size.

Shoes and socks

Ties

Avoid shorter ties and always wear a tie, which contrasts with your shirt. The pant and coat should be in proper colour coordination. The tie should reach out to your belt line. If you wear suits often then purchase at least one new tie every year as the styles of ties change frequently. Do remember that a properly knotted tie should have a dimple under the knot.

Avoid T-shirts that carry funny statements or faces, bright colours or embroidery, as they can ruin your personality.

There is an old proverb that your shoes reveal your personality. So, keep your shoes clean and shiny. Always wear shoes that match the colour of your belt. Wearing black shoes and a black belt is a fashion fundamental and suitable for casual to formal. Also, your socks should be the same colour as your trousers.

Socks with sandals Sandals are designed only for hot season and should not be worn with socks in winter.

Backpacks at office

Do not carry a backpack if you work in a professional environment. Instead, carry a nice black or brown leather bag to office. Backpacks usually look good on students or hikers but are a big no-no for office goers.

Essentials for his wardrobe Here are some garments and accessories, which are vital for men to stay updated vis-Ă -vis the fashion circuit.

Ties

Fashionable ties are a must for a stylish man's wardrobe as they can be worn under a sweater or simply with a shirt. Varieties of ties add shine to your wardrobe and personality. This also helps you to play with many unusual colours and patterns.

Elegant suit

A single-breasted, preferably black, navy blue or dark grey suit is a must for men. You can rejuvenate your look with the suit by changing your shirt and tie.

Shoes and belts

One pair of black or brown leather shoes and leather belt is highly essential for a smart look. Always keep your shoes polished and they will keep you looking outstanding.

A classic sweater A white shirt and jeans

A white shirt is a good match with almost anything (be it a suit, sweater, jacket or good fitting denim jeans) and keeps you ahead in the fashion world.

A nice sweater is a substitute to a business suit. You can choose your favourite style, which can be a crew, V-neck or a cardigan. Make sure that it should be an interesting colour and the right size.

Rocky.S Fall Winter collection 2006

Rocky S

This guy should be charged for spreading the fashion waves across the whole country. He is the one responsible for the stylis makeover of our Bollywood superstars and for creating a new meaning to the world called fashion! His designs are vibrant, colourful, stylish and the young India is completely in love with him. A fashion designer, who doesn’t believe in creating only a garment but an entire look, Rocky S is our World Class Indian Designer this month, writes KIRAN CHOPRA.

The platform that Indian fashion industry enjoys today is the result of a handful of designers; who entered the industry only a decade ago. They stormed into the fashion world with their creativity and aestheticism of international calibre, that acted as catalyst and left an indelible mark of the Indian fashion industry on the international ramp. And Rocky S, no doubt is in the same league. He forayed into the fashion world at a very convenient time, when it was taking its road uphill. He knew that he was heading towards growth but that also meant putting in that extra effort to climb. Especially someone, who found it hard to convince his family of the difference between a tailor and a designer. His father was a chartered accountant and two of his brothers were into construction and taxation. He learnt his basics from the J.D Institute of Fashion Designing and as luck would have it, Roopam Departmental Stores were looking for a designer. Rocky took the courage of walking in for the interview with only a couple of designs, and as they say, his work spoke for him and he landed the job of official head designer there.

Rocky S Chic Collection Handbag

WIFW AW ‘09

His stint with the brand lasted for only three years. However, it gave him the insight to the industry and the impetus to kick start on his own. It was Manisha Koirala, who was instrumental in making Rocky an independent designer that he is today. She liked the designs that he had created at Roopam and asked him to design something exclusively for her. His work was noticed and appreciated by the filmdom and producers asked him to design exclusively for their actors and movies. This is where he came in touch with the likes of Akshay Kumar, Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shetty. Realising that the job at the store and creating exclusive designs for movies were not happening together due to paucity of time, he quit his job to start designing absolutely on his own. However, destiny had its own plans. Couple of years in movies and Rocky realised that his designing was getting haunted with the various parameters that the producers and the movie gave him. Not wanting to curtail his growth as a designer, Rocky took the bold step of cutting down on movies and gradually creating

Ticket to Bollywood

Rocky S is a fabulous designer and a great person too, so it makes a great combination. He is excellent with his finish and palette, which are vital. He knows how to mix Indian style with western style and does it stylishly. If you want to look like a princess, all you need to do is to wear a creation of Rocky S. He is an excellent designer, who designs for the future. -- Nina Manuel, celebrity model and TV host

Costumes designed for some of the famous movies:

Partner, Krrish, Koi Mil Gaya, Na Tum Jano Na Hum, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Yaadein, Mohra, Apaharan

designs that came freely to him. This eventually led him to open his first boutique on Juhu Tara road in Mumbai called Rocky S. Finally, the designer who was influencing Indian fashion via movies had now opened the gates of his creativity for everyone to splurge in. His participation in the Igedo fair during September 1996 in Dusseldorf-Germany, finally put him on the global fashion map. Rocky S designs clothes for Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Salman Khan, Aftaab Shivdasani, Amisha Patel, Diya Mirza, Esha Deol, Bipasha Basu, Akhay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty and obviously for Manisha Koirala. The list goes a long way, but in short he has designed for almost all the superstars in Bollywood. Although he takes care of their looks in respective movies, he does not necessarily design all their clothes.

Basically, it is Rocky’s strong sense of aesthetics that he can create a powerful look with his choice of various combinations of clothes and accessories. So even if he is not designing all clothes of a star in a movie, he is indeed creating the looks that are an instant hit. His participation in the fashion weeks goes back to 2002 and since then he has been churning out collections of great wearable fashion that people love to flaunt. Call it his forte or his muse for designing, Rocky S creates looks that actually are not flamboyant but in every way fashionable and stylish. Denims, cottons, lycra or linen, every fabric he picks up, the designs are vibrant, funky and refreshingly trendy in every aspect. Rocky has even come out with his perfume line ‘Rocky S Noir Femme’ and ‘Rocky S Noir Pour Hommes’.

I have always liked Rocky's fashion nous, which is commercially viable and also has a fashionable edge. In Bollywood, his work has been unanimously declared superb. He has worked with the biggies of the industry and has adapted himself really well according to their physical and attitude semantics. He is always sure about what he wants for himself and that also reflects in his creativity. According to me, his women creations are more appealing than his men stuff.

Was modelling always on your cards or it happened by chance?

I never thought that I would ever become a model or would be a part of the modelling industry. It all happened by chance.

How did your journey start towards this glamorous industry?

It all started when I was in college and got the best model award during a fashion show competition, in college.

According to you, what are the pros and cons of modelling? What is the one thing, which you would like to change in this glamour industry? Modelling is full of fun, travelling and meeting new people. It is a never-ending learning process, which excites me all the time. However, the industry is full of insecurity and unprofessionalism. Here nobody is your friend. I would like to change unprofessionalism and partiality, which is common here.

How crucial is a good portfolio in making a difference in a model’s career? Who shot your first portfolio?

Good folio is a must and the most important part for the success of a model’s career. A folio shows the body language, confidence and expressions of a model. It helps him or her to get good work and grow according to their potential. Manish Gupta shot my first portfolio.

What according to you is the most important thing to keep in mind while getting your portfolio clicked?

Be confident and natural while getting your protfolio clicked. Keep in mind that over expressions and everything in excess is really bad for your folio.

How essential is it for a model to keep fit and well-versed with fashion?

It is vital in this profession. According to me, a good body and impressive personality are essential features for becoming a good and successful model.

People often consider modelling as ‘child’s play’. What is your stand on it?

For such people, I throw a challenge, come and prove it! It is not so easy to sustain here for a long time. This profesion also needs hard work and commitment with full dedication.

Tell us about some qualities, which are necessary to become a good model? Do you think a parallel career option is necessary for models?

34

n

Models Trends JULY 2009

Looks, confidence and not to forget, a good and fit body are quintessential features to become a good model. Thinking of a parallel career is very important and very sensible too.

Who do you think is the ultimate fashion diva and why?

For me, it is Victoria Beckham. She is just fabulous. Be it fashion or her personal life, it is always a fashion statement.

What are your views on the sexual harassment and casting couch in this industry?

I think models should have a union to aggresively confront such problems. However, if you are a smart girl then no one can fool you around.

A fashion tip, which you think really works? What is your style statement?

My style staetment and fashion tip is to be trendy and fashionable.

Who has been your mentor in this industry? My instincts!

hese words amply bring out the power that your confidence can bring to you. This time around I am going to tell you a story that was told to me by an ExMs. India, Shweta Menon. It helped her to understand a simple rule that confidence in yourself or in something that you have can give you total control over your feelings and actions. Let me tell you the story first. A man had been on a long flight. The airliner had taken off a couple of hours ago and everything seemed to be going smoothly. The first warning of the approaching problems came when the ‘Fasten seat belts’ sign was put on. After a few minutes, a calm voice said, “Ladies and gentlemen, we shall not be serving the beverages at this time as we are expecting a little turbulence. Please ensure that you remain

seated with your seat belts fastened.” As the man looked around the aircraft, it became obvious that many of the passengers were becoming apprehensive. The voice of the stewardess came on again, “We are sorry that we are unable to serve drinks and refreshments at this time. The turbulence is still ahead of us.” And then the storm broke. The cracks of thunder could be heard even above the roar of the engines. Lightening lit up the dark skies and within moments the big airliner was like a cork tossed around in a celestial ocean. One moment the airplane was lifted on terrific currents of air; the next, it dropped as if it were about to crash. Loose items were flying around the cabin. As the man looked around the plane, he could see that nearly all the passengers were beginning to get alarmed and scared. Some started to

scream and some others were praying. The future seemed ominous and many were wondering if they would make it through the storm. And then, he saw a little girl. She must have been around 15 years old. But the storm meant nothing. She had tucked her feet beneath her as she sat on her seat and was reading a book. Everything within her world was calm and orderly. Sometimes she closed her eyes, then she would read again; then she would straighten her legs, but worry and fear were not in her world. When the plane was being buffeted by the terrible storm, when it lurched this way and that, as it rose and fell with frightening severity, when all the others were scared half to death, that marvellous girl was completely composed and unafraid. It was not surprising therefore that when the plane finally reached its destination and all the passengers were hurrying to disembark, the man walked towards the little girl. He mentioned the storm and the distress they had all been under, and asked why she had not been afraid. The girl replied, “My daddy was the pilot and he is a very good pilot.” She was convinced that her daddy would fly her safely and the storm notwithstanding, they would be arriving at their destination safe and sound. The panic all around did not affect her at all. Now think of the time when you are about to walk on to the Ms India stage for the first time, or when you are about to come face to face with all the judges in the preliminaries, or when that one judge is about to ask you the question, which will decide which three ladies will go home with the crowns and roses. Scary, isn’t it? The butterflies in your stomach are playing havoc, sweat beads are beginning to show on your forehead and the nervousness is clearly going to affect you. Unless, in some way, you can take control over yourself. Here is where that confidence in yourself will help you, and this confidence comes from preparation. The more you prepare, the better you can control your nervousness …..and your performance in a stress situation improves. Preparation, therefore, is the key. Don’t just jump into the fray at the last moment and think that you can win. You might, but the chances are slim. The current Ms India, Ekta Chowdhry’s mother first brought her to me 8 years ago. She was only 13 years old then. Ekta prepared for a long time before she filled up the form, and that is the only way to do it. Next issue, we shall talk of more stuff to get you ready for that Miss India crown. In the mean time, answer this month’s simple question and win yourself 3 free one-on-one training sessions with me. It will help you on your way to the crown. Plus it is easy because the answer to the question lies somewhere in this article. The Question : If you believe that you cannot do something, you will never be able to do it. (True or False?) Shoot off your answer to yuri@modelsntrends.com. The lucky winner will be notified by e mail. Till next month then.

hen Shefali Zariwala’s sensual remix number, ‘kaanta laga’ music video was released, it set the whole audience on fire, across the nation. It was not the hot music video or the sizzling song itself but the appearance of Shefali, whose Gstring was peeking out from under her low-hipped jeans and had raised quite a storm amongst the cultural police of the country. Acquiescing to her footsteps, model Alesia Raut in her bare-dare music video, ‘meri beri ke ber mat todo’, had also created a ripple while revealing her inner secret on screen. And now, once again, lingerie is ready to rock as the blooming, fiery, and sexy Bollywood actresses are ready to wow the viewers with their chutzpah and charm by slipping into this ‘hip-n-hot’ trend. It is not only these swanky bombshells, but you will also find quite a few girls and women wanting to parade in these intimate apparels. Exposure, the desire to possess and the discussion thereof on this ‘forbidden fruit’ subject is no longer considered a taboo in our advanced globalised world. According to Jaydeep Shetty, CEO, Etam, a high-end lingerie brand, “The Indian woman is gradually seeing lingerie as a fashion subject and this is the single most behavioural feature that makes this segment promising.” Today, Indian women are spending around 15 times more on lingerie than they used to four years ago. The women of today need not suppress their desires and suffer, where innerwear is concerned, since they know how to deal with it. Value, comfort and style are her new buzzwords. With more spending power in her hands, she is willing to shell out an exorbitant 600 to 800 rupees on a branded bra, as compared to just 40 to 80 rupees on an unbranded one, earlier. This high-end branded lingerie segment has its own charm for the Indian women consumers.

The Indian woman is gradually seeing lingerie as a fashion subject and this is the single most behavioural feature that makes this segment promising.

Also, shopping for high-end lingerie has not only become a way to boast of the oomph elite status but also a way to be called ‘à la mode’. The segment is on the surge as claims Mr. Shetty, “The lingerie branded market is anywhere between rupees 800 to 1000 crores. Other than the metros and ‘A’ class towns, this is still otherwise an unbranded category. The premium end though maybe around rupees 50 to 60 crores, at the best. The lingerie business is growing at least in the premium segment, but having more players would have pushed the growth further.” With international brands, global companies entering the Indian market to make well designed, and intricately tailored lingerie ‘a mass affair’; it won’t be an exaggeration to say that lingeries might become the next fashion fad in India. “Gone are the days when inner wear was considered as a trivial piece of clothing.

With changes in lifestyle and better buying power, women consumers have become more selective and demanding; thus resulting in variety in terms of stylisation, colours and designs available.

and Prada, some major players like Triumph and Esprit recently launched their new collection in India. Similarly, Sri Lankan Amante is also focusing on branding and consolidating its position in India. “The focus for Amanté for the next 3 years is to deliver glamour and fashion, while focusing on comfort, product integrity, and competitive pricing, to capture a substantial market share. We hope to expand our operations to Sri Lanka and Middle East in due course of time. In the long run, we would like to bring into India our manufacturing and supply chain partners,” asserts Mr. Rajamani. So says Mr. Allenstein, “As we are a top of the line lingerie company, we would like to maintain the position by innovative marketing strategies without compromising on the quality.” Innovation and product quality are the key areas, where these companies are accentuating more. “We are today among the top 3 players in the premium lingerie segment. Our product is mostly imported and all designed out of Paris. We sell our products in India at the same time as France and this is one of the major reasons that customers like shopping at Etam,” says Mr. Shetty. And to cash in on the lucrative segment markedly, French lingerie brand Etam, has also launched Etam ready to wear, a complete women’s wear for young women. “Our main target audience is the fashion conscious youth, below 30 years of age. For a country like India, targeting this category is a great sign,” adds Mr. Shetty. And this young cohort, a sweet spot for global players is bold; with loads of attitude and has no-holds-barred confidence; who is passing through a blistering phase and for whom innerwear is also as eminent as outerwear. So, in the imminent years, the lingerie fashion would also consist of a huge potential share of the apparel world.

In the new market, consumers prefer not to be seen as compromising so the global players are inducting the latest enticing designs in the market.

Today, inner wear has become a matter of luxury, style, sex appeal and gorgeousness. Women have become more indulgent, thereby creating a potential market with huge volumes. They tend to follow international trends closely. With changes in lifestyle and better buying power, women consumers have become more selective and demanding; thus resulting in variety in terms of stylisation, colours and designs available,” says Venkatesh Rajamani, CEO, MAS Retail whose lingerie brand, Amante has been well received by the fashionable women. This mania is driving the market and a number of big brands are entering this segment. “The segment is promising as it is still underdeveloped and has a huge potential of growing, as the growth is roughly in 3 digits every year. This has attracted many more players to enter into the market to tap this opportunity. New opportunities have opened up, as the size of the market in terms of consumer head count, the changing demand pattern of consumer is ever increasing, as now they look for better quality and like to match it with international standards,” corrects Thorsten Allenstein, GM and country head, Triumph India and Sri Lanka. Similarly Andrea Bonardi, MD, La Perla Asia, which is in discussions with Reliance brands to explore more horizons here, claims, “that in the new market consumers prefer not to be seen as compromising. Therefore, in order to capture a substantial share of the country’s branded market, the global players are inducting the latest enticing designs in the market, as it has been noted that the lingerie preferences of women are continuously changing.” Apart from high-end designer brands like Versace, Gucci

Help for Frizzy Hair

F

rizzy hair is usually a cause of despair as these cannot be left open and hairstyling is also a problem. However, the frizzy look of the hair can be minimised. It is important therefore, to know the cause of frizzy hair. Naturally, frizzy hair lack protein and moisture. Curly hair can turn frizzy when the weather is dry. In fact, dryness or lack of moisture in the hair makes it look frizzier. Coarse hair can also become frizzy, because these are generally dry. Chemical damage is a common cause for frizzy hair. Hair, which have been repeatedly coloured, dyed, permed or bleached, can become frizzy due to damage and dryness. Longterm exposure to chlorinated water, especially in swimming pools, excessive use of dryers and even some hairdressing products can lead to frizzy hair. For dry and damaged hair, use very little of a mild shampoo and rinse the hair well with water. After shampoo, apply a creamy conditioner, massaging it lightly into the hair. Leave it on for two minutes and rinse off with plain water.

Avoid using a hair dryer every time and let the hair dry naturally. Avoid brushing the hair. Use a wide-toothed comb or fingers to dry the hair. If your hair is very dry, do not rinse the entire conditioner. Leaving some on helps to keep the hair soft and improves its look. You can also apply a conditioner that can be left on. Shalisma, for instance, adds shine to the hair and also improves the texture. Very little of the product should be used. It may be applied lightly into the hair with the fingers or take very little and spread over both palms. Smooth the palms over the hair. It also contains sunscreen and protects the hair from sundamage. Another easy way of improving frizzy hair is to take two drops of a light vegetable oil, such as sunflower oil. Put it on your palms and rub the palms lightly together, so that the oil spreads over both palms. You can smooth the palms over the hair or take the ends of the hair in your palms and scrunch them. Do the same with the rest of the hair, going upwards from the ends. This works better on dry hair. Leave the oil on. Another simple solution is to mix some water with hair conditioner and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture on the hair and then comb the hair, so that it spreads through the hair. Deep conditioning treatments would also help. Once a week, mix together one egg, one-tablespoon castor oil, lemon juice and one teaspoon pure glycerine or honey.

You can use an eggbeater if you like. Massage this well into the scalp and apply on the hair too. Wear a plastic shower cap and keep on for an hour, before washing the hair. Mix one egg to one-tablespoon mayonnaise and one teaspoon olive oil. Apply the paste on the hair. Then wrap a hot towel. Leave it on for half an hour and then wash the hair. Hot oil treatments help the hair to absorb the oil better. Once or twice a week heat pure coconut oil and apply on the scalp and hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the head like a turban. Keep it on for five minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap three or four times. Instead of hot water, rinsing the hair with cool water helps frizzy hair. Hot water can actually increase the frizz. After shampoo, avoid rubbing the hair. Just wrap a towel around the head and let it soak up water. Avoid using a hair dryer every time and let the hair dry naturally. Avoid brushing the hair. Use a wide-toothed comb or fingers to dry the hair. If you do use a hair dryer at home, use a big round brush. Divide the hair into sections. Pin them up and dry one section at a time. Blow in a downward direction. Using the dryer over the hair can cause more frizz.

Beat the heat this

SUMMER

Summer is the season, when the skin health needs much attention and care in order to maintain its glowing beauty. The scorching heat and muggy ambience of summer is detrimental for every type of skin. In summer, skin loses its shine easily and becomes dull and oily. If you are a model or a professional in the business field, it is impossible for you to keep yourself away from sun and humid atmosphere. Therefore, follow some useful tips this summer to make yourself fit and fine writes AASHMEEN MUNJAAL Apply sunscreen lotion whenever you go out in the sun. A good sunscreen with minimum SPF35 is a must for the skin. You can choose it according to your skin type. You can also choose gel based, cream based or foundation based sunscreen. It should be applied thoroughly on all the exposed areas of the body for at least 25 minutes before facing the sun. Waterproof sunscreen is good for those, who sweat a lot. Weekly fruit pack or chandan pack is also good for the skin.

Wash your face with water after every two hours to avoid the grease on your skin. You can wash your face with just plain water, and then rub ice on your face to tight the skin.

70

n

Models Trends JULY 2009

For skin maintenance in summer, you can also apply beauty treatments like hydro cleansing, alpha hydro facial, oxy cleansing, fruit and flower peeling.

Sunglasses and umbrella should be used for protection against the ultra violet rays of the sun.

Salads are the best diet for the summer season. Cucumber and tomatoes are the best option for summer salads. Avoid onion as it creates heat in the body. A little amount of beetroot and broccoli help in maintaining the glow on the face. Capsicum and cabbage shreds are also good. They have a rich fibre content that sustains the water level inside the tissues. Watermelon and muskmelon are the gifts of summer. They can be eaten and applied to skin many times. Lichi and grapes are also good for the vitamins and proteins required by the body. Mango should be avoided.

The sunrays create many problems for skin in summer and suntan is one of them. A good tan remover is also required followed by fruits penetration by galvanic or ultra sonic process. At home, one should apply whitening mask and can try the whitening treatment done by Spanish products at a reputed salon. In summer, eat moisturised foods. Raw fruits, vegetables and the moisture containing food products should be preferred. Body tends to lose its Ph balance and moisture level because of summer heat. Therefore, one should drink lots of liquids in the form of water, juice, coconut water and skimmed milk to control the metabolism balance. Totally avoid fried food, junk food, chocolates, maida based food and heavy pulses.

Keep yourself fit in the dull days of summer by a regular walk, exercise and fitness regime. These fat burning exercises help in maintaining the glow and shine of the whole body. A minimum brisk walk of at least fifteen minutes, followed by a glass of lukewarm lemon water with honey, is a health tonic for everyone.

You started your modelling career in adolescence. Do you think that you have missed the happy-go-lucky days since you have become a career-oriented girl ?

Although my modelling career started before time but I disagree to the fact that I missed my carefree days. I am one of those lucky ones, who enjoyed her adolescent 'happy-go-lucky' days while spending the money, which I earned myself.

Apart from modelling and movies, what else do you wish to do in your life? What are your upcoming movies?

I want to be a happy star and wish to live happily always. There are many movies lined up in varied languages in the near future. So with my fingers crossed, I am waiting for them to release.

What difference have you noticed in Tollywood and Bollywood How did you get a chance to debut in the movie, Mission Istanbul ? ways of working? Did you face any problem while working in the Telugu movie Indumathi? My entry into modelling was purely 'Luck By Chance' and so

was my entry in Bollywood movies. Suniel Shetty spotted my hoarding and the rest is history.

No, not at all. Both industries have their own styles of working and I enjoyed the best of both worlds.

What is your outlook towards your profession and the industry?

Tell us about a childhood incident, which you will never forget?

I quite like all the flaws in the industry. I love and hate the scrutiny that one goes through, when you are in the industry. Every single thing you do is magnified, so I guess one has to measure every step for a long jump.

I learnt that a bee can really sting hard. Once my father removed a bee hive and without listening to anyone, I went and picked it up with my bare hands and tried to throw it. And you won’t believe me; the next few days were spent in pain and crying.

My favourites

My fashion tip: Add accessories like shoes, bags, eyewear and jewellery in your wardrobe. They are a must have for everyone. Invest in a good brand as it really stands out. My hottest thing: My eyes. I think they are very naughty. The craziest thing I have ever done: Skydiving from

‘Age ke right effects’ ‘Health (definitely) is Wealth’ and Bollywood boys (read men over 40) have become ‘abs’ conscious to wave shirtless looks while keeping their actual age at bay. So, who are these mavericks?

Shahrukh Khan

Badshah of Bollywood needs no words of introduction. SRK was recently announced by an American magazine, ‘News Week’ as the 41st most powerful man in the world. Interestingly Shahrukh is running in his 43rd year. Khan already has his wax figure at the Madame Tussauds museum, in London. Well, he is leaving no stone unturned to prove himself as ‘the best’. In 2007, despite his growing age and health hazard, he built six pack abs and performed an unbuttoned dance on Dard-e-Disco song of movie Om Shanti Om. In 2008, his spectacled look and a geek moustache fetched him 12 crores and he was striking in his new look in the movie, Billoo Barber. 74

Sanjay Dutt

The macho man of Bollywood looks bravura both in and out of clothes. Despite his 49 years of age, Sanju baba has decided to recoup his fantastic physique so as to justify himself in the aura of image makeover. Fading his gandhigiri image, his new look in his latest movie Blue . Surely, with this makeover, the effervescent actor will be looking beyond the meager amount of one crore per film.

Salman Khan

Sexy bachelor Salman is always on the vanguard, when it comes to the concept of well-formed body. He and his shirtless shot are quite inseparable since 1988’s blockbuster movie, Maine Pyar Kiya. This gimmick led him to a higher rank and tagged him as a role model for the youth in India, when it came to body building. At 43, he is single, sexy and very much into controversies. After installation of his wax statue at Madame Tussauds museum, Salman is also looking forward to his next release. Now, it is the time to watch him in his new movie, Veer, where this controversial Khan will be seen in his best ever.

Aamir Khan

Bollywood’s Mr. Perfectionist has completed his 44th year and is becoming more stylish and experimental. The 1980’s cute lover boy has turned into a macho man in the late 2000. Aamir has come up with a surprising new look and an admiring eight abs, which he flaunted modestly in his mega movie, Ghajini. He is on the way to succeed the muscle men of B-town in terms of looks and money. His Ghajini hair style has already won the hearts of fashion followers and his remuneration of 15 crores for a role depicts his robust demand in the industry.

Akshay Kumar

And here comes the new king of tinsel town. For the last 17 years, lady luck was playing hide and seek with this down-to-earth guy, who was swinging for long on the roof of success. Indeed, after three continuous successful hits, Akshay has become the apple of Bollywood producers’ eye. Now at 41, he is going great guns with his shirtless shoots. Be it the Levis campaign or the big budget adventurous flick 'Chandni Chowk to China', sky is the limit for this khiladi.

Well, pumping iron is working great in terms of hiking name and fame. Our Bollywood actors are just like bitter pickles, getting better with time and age. So dudes, let’s wait and watch for the next addition to this exclusive list.

In our filminagri, only the fittest can survive, that’s why every actor and actress is busy shedding weight. The absmania continues and now our circuit bhai, Arshad Warsi has also turned into a fitness freak. The actor, whose earlier movie could not spell magic at the box office, is now following a balanced diet and a rigorous workout. "Running for 45 minutes every day is a must. I also keep in mind that I have balanced meals at least five times a day, since it is not advisable to keep your stomach empty for long hours at a stretch," said Arshad. Meanwhile, in order to make movies of his own taste, Arshad has also become a producer and nowadays is busy in his home production movie, Kaun Bola. We think that Arshad knows well how Bollywood stars keep producers on their toes. So fitness is necessary to face any unpleasant situation.

Matthew’s small sex gyan

Hollywood hunk Matthew McConaughey has admitted that earlier he was clueless about how to perform sex. He had no idea about women's bodies, when he first had sex. “Although I have gone through numerous adult publications during my adolescence but was totally hopeless, when I first got intimate with a girl,” smilingly revealed McConaughey. The actor, who has a nine month old son with model Camila Alves, also claims that he finds every woman attractive. Now we realise that there are so many women behind this s(ex)uccessful Hollywood actor.

Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow is very busy these days. The star lady is gearing up to become a fashion designer as she has teamed up with French label ZOEtee to create their autumn winter collection called, ‘ZOEtee Loves Gwyneth’. She has also launched her website and is planning to pen a cookery book. The actress has unveiled a guide to London to inform people about the city’s famous eateries, hotels, pubs, etc. Gwyneth is also auctioning off her old designer clothes for a poverty charity. She is selling off 100 of her ‘most treasured things’ including Jimmy Choo, Lanvin and Balenciaga to help the Robin Hood Foundation in New York.

Beauty with brain

Dusky beauty Bipasha Basu has already proved her dancing skills in tinsel town. So, it does not come as a surprise if she is the top favourite for a number of award functions. Recently, Bipasha performed at a music awards function but to her horror, she realized that there was a malfunction with her skirt, which she was wearing in the performance. And on top of that, the malfunction happened not once but thrice. But professional Bipasha still carried on with her act with ample grace and poise. The actress had to change her costumes in between the dance performances but she took it all in her stride. Little did the audience know that there was some problem with her costume. Had it been some one else, they would surely have panicked and thrown tantrums. Clapping for Bips…

Mallika ‘Shakeawat’

Mallika Sherawat is perhaps the only celebrity in Bollywood, who is rather more famous for her weird activities than her movies. The self-proclaimed queen is performing in a Hollywood movie and she was in seventh heaven, when a milkshake was named after her in Hollywood along with other Hollywood celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Victoria Beckham, David Beckham and Paris Hilton. The ‘Mallika Shake’ features blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Well, we do not think that there is anyone ready to taste this one in Bollywood, especially our envious actresses.

Enrique is not mature enough for wedlock

Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias is not interested to marry his long-term partner, Anna Kournikova. The singer has been dating the tennis player for eight years but insists that he is not ‘mature’ enough to settle down and start a family. “I believe in marriage but I do not think that you need to marry to be happy. I have seen happy couples, who are not married and I have also seen married couples, who are living a miserable life,” reasoned Enrique. Although, he admits that he would love to have children but right now is not the moment. “Let's see if I mature some day!" However, the 33 year old musician believes that Anna is the love of his life and she is the ideal woman. Bravo dear! It is just like eating one's cake and having it too.

Lindsay wants men now

After her split from her girlfriend, Lindsay Lohan is now back to men. The actress, who was recently dumped by DJ Samantha Ronson following a year-long romance, was seen flirting with an unnamed chap at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Lindsay and her new friend left the event together and reportedly ended up at the actress' lavish hotel room. Lindsay was also seen getting close to actor Leonardo DiCaprio at a Hollywood party. However, Lindsay was left disappointed when the actor shunned her advances and left to spend time with his girlfriend. Dear Lindsay, practise makes perfect. Carry on, babe.

This travel may also open up some opportunities for you. The unattached can look forward to meeting someone to whom you are attracted and this could be the start of a beautiful relationship. You are in the pink of health and raring to take all that this month brings.

CAPRICORN

(December 22 - January 20)

This a phase where your senses are heightened and your creativity is par excellence. You bring in innovative ideas and novel view points at work. This will greatly enhance your image. This will please you as this is close to the image you want to portray. You will be a force to reckon with as you interact and communicate with business associates and on the social front. A long term association could be formed. Professional demands and the numerous activities involved in the upcoming collaboration could prove to be stressful so do not go overboard as is your usual tendency. However, with your finely tuned sensitivity, romance cannot be far behind. You welcome company and are ready to fall headlong into an intoxicating affair. There could be some plans of travel, especially overseas travel in the near future.

PISCES

(February 19 - March 20)

You need to put in extra efforts to get the desired results. Avoid useless activities, especially in the first half of the month. The second fortnight is better than the first one, where results can be seen and you even win some accolades. Your creativity and innovative approach is appreciated. The hard work put in by you will not go unnoticed. Your family expresses their love and support to you. Get ready to pack your bags as overseas travel is on the cards. Romance is rekindled for the married and those in a relationship. For the unattached, happy times with all the trappings of romance awaits you. You turn to the arts and many of you take up a new hobby or enhance your skills. You are at a stage, where you are conscious of your image; of how you project yourself and how others perceive you. You feel happy and fit at the end of the month, feeling on top of the world.
