Features Editor: Sophia It’s my job to write about the things I love, bring you the hottest trends and bang up to date news from across Yorkshire and beyond! Lots of the features in the magazine will have crossed my desk before reaching you, so of course I hope you enjoy them! It’s been hard work following ALL the shows from the fashion weeks of New York, London, Paris and Milan, researching what’s hot to wear right now and reviewing lots of beauty bits but its job that needs doing... ;) So I took one for the team and in doing so, The Fashion Issue was born and I hope you love reading it as much as I loved writing it. Next issue we’ll be gearing up for the festive season with Christmas only a couple of months away! If you’ve got a story or would like to be involved in the next issue, then get in touch; sophia@mode.mg I’d love to hear from you! Welcome to ‘The Fashion Issue’. As the title might suggest, this issue comes to you full of style news, trend reports and fashion guides. I might hasten to add though; this is not a ‘girly’ fashion magazine. We’ve made sure to include lots of style advice for the gent’s too, so there really is something for everyone. Our heads have been deeply buried in fashion books galore, reading up on all the latest trends, to bring you a great little Autumn/Winter Style guide. You can also expect to find news of the latest trends hot off the catwalks of the SS15 shows of New York, London, Paris and Milan. We also take a look at Christopher Bailey, the man behind Burberry, who just so happens to be from Yorkshire… Fashion aside, we’ve still got all of our fabulous features, from MODE Loves to Motors, Health & Fitness to Food & Drink, not to mention we’ve got a great interview with interior design guru Kelly Hoppen.
were there and got papped? We’ve got a diary packed full of exciting bits coming up this month, all of which will feature next issue, but in the mean time, get in touch about your event, we’d love to hear from you! At this time of year our attention turns to Christmas, we’re already putting together a list of the best places to be seen this festive season, plus we’ll be bringing you our Ultimate Gift Guide, so that’s your Xmas shopping sorted. But for now, I’ll let you pick your own way through the various and oh so fashionable offerings of this issue.
Recently we have attended some great events, including the annual Harvey Nichol’s AW Fashion Show and Accent’s 30th Anniversary celebrations, you’ll find all the photos in Paparazzi! Perhaps you

Your Support Matters
Kirkwood Hospice provides specialist care, free of charge, to adults in Kirklees with advanced, progressive illnesses at any time from diagnosis to the end of life, respecting their individual needs and wishes. Care and support is also provided for their family members, friends and carers, both during the illness and after death. This year it will cost around ÂŁ5 million to maintain services at Kirkwood Hospice. Ongoing grants represent less than 18% of these costs. This means that the Hospice needs to raise over ÂŁ3.7 million in voluntary income every year in order to continue to care for patients.
To raise this money the Hospice relies on the support of individuals, companies and organisations – people just like you. From taking part in one of our events to joining the Hospice lottery, from picking up a bargain at one of their 20 shops to organising your own fundraising initiative, however you help, your support will be greatly appreciated. Your gift will help Kirkwood Hospice to provide care for the people across Kirklees who need us the most.

SHOES. ENOUGH SAID.... Sophia Webster – Nicole £495 sophiawebster.co.uk It has nothing to do with the fact that this acclaimed shoe designer happens to share the same name as our features editor...we promise. Instead it has everything to do with the fact that Sophia Webster is a genius when it comes to footwear design. Often known for her over the top girly aesthetic, in recent collections - most notably the recently debuted SS15 collection - she has shown more attitude. Her shoes are still entirely feminine but with an added butt-kicking quality.

But never fear, Revlon Professional Interactives Brilliant Hydra Elixir, has a super light weight texture, so leaves hair looking healthy, glossy and frizz free without feeling weighed down and greasy.
Made from high-quality weather resistant steel with a cataphoresis coating, it is designed and made for both outdoor and indoor use. Soleus GO! There are plenty of fitness bands out there but how d does the Soleus GO! fair on our test... Marketed as the most comprehensive fitness tracker on the market, the Soleus GO! tracks everything from your daily activity to your sleep habits, providing insights into the bedtime sl behaviours that make up your lifestyle, allowing you to make ma informed decisions, set goals and meet health and fitness targets. The GO! even tells weather and temperature, receives your you the w messages and has a caller ID when connected text messa via Bluetooth Bluetoo to your phone. This is all displayed OLED screen allowing you to read data, on the OL either while whil on the wrist or via the phone app. When the GO! Landed on our desk, we recruited our Editor in Chief and running enthusiast, Coral Keers, to road ro test it, to see if it really is as good as they say it iis! recently joined my local running Coral: Having Ha club, I’ve jjust received my certificate confirming athlete! I’ve since been keen to me as a bonafide bo progress and an have been interested in tracking my activity, so was happy to volunteer to review the GO! Already, ‘checking it’ has become Soleus GO somewhat of an addiction and surprisingly I found than I expected to set up (I am not a lover it easier tha technology!). of overcomplicated overcom

Thankfully there are loads of PDF’s and videos available tto download which cover instructions of its functionality so it’s been a on all aspects asp What I’ve really loved is how it ttreat to work. w

keeps me connected, it has a caller ID display when it’s connected to my phone via Bluetooth and also receives texts! Another great thing is that it prompts me to MOVE! It sounds silly but sometimes, your sat and your e working and you suddenly realise you literally haven’t moved for hours. You can set timescales and prompts to remind you to get up, stretch and get moving – something I think we could all benefit from. It’s got loads of other great features too, including a sleep monitor which has helped me understand my sleep pattern and adjust my habits to make sure I’m getting the best quality sleep possible and not waking up so groggy and a calorie tracker. All in all the Soleus GO! Has some great features, it looks good and it has amazing battery life. If I could wish for one thing, is that it would be more versatile in tracking different exercise types aside from just steps and running. I’m a keen mountain biker too, but as far as a running/ activity trackers go, this one is a winner!
The Verdict: Ease of use: Technology: Tested by: Coral Keers Would you recommend The Soleus GO!? Yes www.soleusgo.com

Are you feeling warm yet? Last issue I shared my top tips for getting active and becoming a runner. So now you’re on board and ready to be the best version of you, let’s get warmed up... As a general guideline, an effective warm up should produce mild sweating without fatigue. It’s important to warm up before exercising for a number of reasons. Dive straight in and you could cause yourself injury, plus you’ll be unable to make as many demands of your body. Initially a warm up should involve low intensity (light) jogging or walking to increase the heart rate and blood flow to muscles. This phase of the warm up should last for 5-10mins. Moving on, the next stage of the warm up should involve what’s known as “dynamic range of movement exercises” to loosen up the joints and muscles. This phase should focus on those specific body parts to be used for your particular sport or activity. We should choose dynamic stretches rather than static stretching as static stretches will decrease heart rate and cause the body to effectively ‘cool down’ and we’ve not even started yet. A dynamic warm up is designed to increase body temperature, activate the nervous system,

increase range of motion, and correct limitations; all of which will ensure you have a safe and efficient workout. Some examples of dynamic warm up stretches include: trunk/hip rotations,
With a race history including the legendary Marathon des Sables (a 150mile footrace across the Sahara Desert), two 100 mile runs across the North and South Downs Way and a run cross country from Carlisle to Newcastle, we felt confident that Andrew Landells, would be the man to ask about fitness.
STATS:
Heel Flicks
arm/shoulder rotations, side bends, leg swings and lateral lunges. The next element of a warm up should entail activities involving acceleration and deceleration, preparing your body for the faster movements that will be required for your particular activity. This should involve a gradual progression, starting at low intensity and building up to greater intensity. This phase of the warm up should involve some side step jogging, high knees and heel flicks. The acceleration part of the warm up should involve some short pick-ups initially of around 5-10 seconds building up to some more prolonged bursts of around 20-30 seconds.
Occupation: Fire Fighter/Personal Trainer/ Ultra Runner
Don’t forget to warm up your mind. All throughout the warm up you should be mentally focussing on what you are warming up for which is another key element for you to go out and successfully smash your session!

Turn off the telly!
Run to Eat
Draft health advice on obesity has recommended taking TV-free days or setting two-hour limits on the amount of time spent sitting in front of screens. In all honesty, I don’t think a study needs to be carried out to prove that hours sat in front of a screen contribute to rising obesity levels, but it’s still advice worth listening to. So turn it off and get up, whether you go for a walk, run or cycle or even just do some housework, time spent off the sofa and on your feet is time well spent.
60 minutes of running = Blueberry muffin (377 calories) + Glass of wine (160 calories) + Starbucks Grande Cappuccino (120 calories) Based on 59kg female running at 6.7mph
What to eat now Rapeseed oil contains beneficial fats in the form of omega 6 and 3, in a ratio of 2:1, which is considered by nutritionists to be favourable. With anti-inflammatory qualities and proven results in helping to reduce cholesterol, I say it’s a fair swap for olive oil. Plus it’s got five times the level of omega 3 than olive oil. So there.
With temperatures across Europe unseasonably high, the drought in Spain continues and so the production of Olive Oil is hindered. With output expected to be at half of that of 2013, perhaps we ought to look to other oils just in case the demand outweighs the supply. Rapeseed oil is hardly new, but despite being produced right here in Britain I don’t think it gets the attention it deserves.

Keep eye makeup minimal, with a light covering of nude or bronze eye shadow
For fabulously undone hair we love Bumble & Bumble’s Bb.texture hair(un)dressing crème. Start with a small amount on damp hair (a must) and build. Let sit a minute, then loosen and ruffle. Apply at the roots for extra lift or use a diffuser for more volume all over. Wear as a finished style or use it as a base for other looks like textured ponytails or chic, wavy chignons.
Benefit ‘gimme brow’ Brow-Volumising Fibre Gel; £17.50 available at benefitcosmetics.co.uk – This innovative brush-on fibre gel adheres to skin & hair... creating brows where before there were none. It builds easily for thick, lush arches, thanks to a tapered brush for blending & precision tip for shaping.

Getting Up Close & Personal with Kiehl’s Founded in 1851 and located in New York City on Third Avenue and 13th Street, the Kiehl Pharmacy was a respected 19th Century old world apothecary. Cleanse: Clearly Corrective White Purifying Foam Cleanser
Today there are 99 Kiehl’s stores in the UK alone, but despite phenomenal growth, the fundamental philosophies, product standards and core values that have always distinguished Kiehl’s remain unchanged: Science, Education, Giving, Respect, and Quality. Having been invited to enjoy a skin consultation with one of Kiehl’s experts at their Leeds store, we thought we’d take it as an opportunity to put the renowned brand and its scientifically advanced products to the test. If you’ve been to a Kiehl’s store or counter, you will agree that the first thing you notice is the lack of white and the clinical display cabinets – typical of a scientifically conscious skincare brand. Instead it is a brand that embraces its rich history as a famed apothecarist, with each store being charmingly decorated with vintage motorcycles, stunt planes and photographs of the founding family, exposed red brick walls and a comically placed skeleton, fondly known as Mr.Bones. The original Mr. Bones skeleton is the actual human skeleton used by founding family member, Aaron Morse during consultations to educate patrons on various ailments as well as helpful remedies. Today, Mr. Bones represents Kiehl’s pharmacy heritage and commitment to customer service, education and science. Abbie (my expert skin consultant) briefed me on the rich heritage of Kiehl’s and threw in a few adorable stories about a pear tree and founding family member, Aaron Morse’s love of adventure, hence the displays of rare motorcycles, vintage cars and stunt places that can be found in each store. After a quick but delightful history lesson she moved on
to tell me about the vast range of products on offer and the mission of Kiehl’s, all whilst unobtrusively carrying out skin patch tests and showcasing the various benefits of recommended products. I often despair at skin consultations for fear of having my carefully applied makeup unceremoniously rubbed off. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were able to thoroughly assess my skin without even a whisper of makeup remover! She allowed me to sample each product on the back of my hand allowing me to experience the finish and feeling of each treatment without leaving me all bare faced and naked. Kiehl’s unique, extensive background represents a blend of cosmetic, pharmaceutical, herbal, and medicinal knowledge and experience acquired and developed through the generations; all of which are incorporated into the formulation and manufacturing of their special treatments and preparations. At the end of my appointment Abbie presented me with a comprehensive skincare routine (all beautifully jotted down in my own little booklet) to take home! I was sent on my way with my new regime and a host of products to sample, having been instructed to persist with the routine for at least two weeks so that I would be able to viably see results. So what did I use, how did it work and what would I recommend? Tester: Sophia – Features Editor Skin Type: Combination/Oily Notes: Prone to blemishes Would like: To achieve a more even skin tone and overall complexion so I can wear less makeup! 20
What they say: Cleanse with Kiehl’s Purifying Foaming Cleanser (with White Birch, Peony Extract & Ceramides) to help to effectively remove impurities without stripping, for a noticeably brighter looking complexion. What I say: Leaves your face feeling totally clean without that horribly stretched tightness but didn’t have too much effect on reducing the number of blemishes.
Tone: Calendula Herbal Extract Toner What they say: This alcohol-free formulation comforts and refreshes the skin, enriched with flower extracts and petals. It also gently removes any excess dirt & debris whilst balancing the skins natural moisture levels. What I say: Definitely helped to reduce redness and oil levels. Left my skin feeling smooth and clean!

Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution
Kiehl’s Skin Rescuer Stress Minimizing Daily Hydrator
Micro Blur Skin Perfector
What they say: Clearly Corrective™ dark spot solution is the first Kiehl’s serum designed to promote youthful clarity while helping to reduce the appearance of dark spots, discolourations and hyperpigmentation. What I say: It is said that you will see visible results after 8 weeks, so I have persisted using the solution and can honestly say that I have noticed a more even complexion. Dark spots have been reduced and my skin is now less prone to discolouration.
What they say: This st ress-mi ni mizi ng daily hydrator combats the appearance of the visible signs of stress on the skin such as fatigued, dull-looking skin and uneven skin tone. What I say: My skin is drastically affected by stress. If I’m having a bad week my skin really makes a point of letting everyone know so this was the product I was most excited about. It’s light and easy to apply and I’ve definitely noticed I am less prone to break outs.
Thanks to Abbie of Kiehl’s, Victoria Quarter – Leeds www.v-q.co.uk www.kiehls.co.uk
Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream
What they say: A lightweight formula that provides both an immediate blurring effect to visibly transform the look of skin in seconds, and an improvement in the appearance of pores and skin texture over time.
What they say: Kiehl’s BB cream, with SPF50, instantly perfects and visibly corrects the appearance of skin tone irregularities with daily use. What I say: I have always worn foundation, feeling that I needed the extra coverage, so was a little nervous using a BB cream that felt more like a tinted moisturiser and in turn left me a little exposed. However, I have been converted and now love the freedom of a BB cream. My skin doesn’t feel caked, yet the cream effectively covers blemishes whilst also actively working to improve my skin all day. Plus I love that it has built in SPF 50.
What I say: I’ve never been too concerned about the appearance of my pores but would say that either side of my nose and chin are the areas that they are most noticeable on - if you look really closely. What I love about Micro Blurs is its likeness to a primer and yet it’s not a temporary fix. It actively works to improve the appearance of pores over time. It’s a great base for applying makeup too and I use it all the time!
Evening Treatment: Midnight Recovery Concentrate What they say: Enriched with a blend of naturally derived ingredients including Squalane, Evening Primrose, and a blend of essential oils, the elixir works all night to replenish the skin with moisture and leave younger-looking skin by morning. What I say: Exactly what they say... This has become somewhat of a must-have for all. It’s my little bed time luxury, a couple of drops is plenty, it smells amazing and helps to relax me. This has become one of my all time favourite things, I love how super soft and hydrated my skin feels when I wake, I don’t think I’d be happy again without it... (yes it’s that good)
21
Eyes: Midnight Recovery Eye What they say: A superb companion to Midnight Recovery Concentrate, Midnight Recovery Eye’s cream texture is specifically formulated for the delicate eye area and helps to improve the skin’s appearance around the eye. What I say: I have age on my side...for now. But I say prevention is better (and cheaper) than the cure and so I have fully embraced the Midnight Recovery Eye cream. This cream helps reduce puffiness and leaves the skin around the eye feeling toned and smooth and looking bright!

Do you have a Mo? Movember, the month formally known as November, is all about bringing back the moustache, having fun and doing it for a serious cause; men’s health - specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. With the support of the women in their lives, Mo Bros commit to growing a moustache for the 30 days of Movember, and in doing so become walking, talking billboards for men’s health. The moustache is the ribbon, the symbol which generates conversations, awareness and funds for this cause.
THE STYLES - CHOOSE YOUR MO
Movember started in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 with a few friends who wanted to bring back a past fashion trend - the moustache. That year, 30 guys participated but no money was raised. In 2004, amazed by the fun they had and the conversations that were sparked, four of the 30 original members came together to make their Mo-growing an annual, official charitable endeavour by adding an important cause – prostate cancer. That year, 450 participants raised $43,000 AUD for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia

Christopher Bailey Yorkshire born Bailey is credited with driving Burberry’s global success since taking over as the iconic brands creative director in 2011. Now the CEO of Burberry, we take a look back at career of one of fashions most notable men.

Say Burberry and it’s likely you’d think of trench coats and their iconic check and you’d not be wrong. Prior to the appointment of Rose Marie Bravo, the brands former CEO, things were going so badly for Burberry that it was only their famous trench coats that Harrods would stock while other department stores including Selfridges and Harvey Nichols failed to carry the line at all. Once the brand of choice for aviators, explorers and equestrian enthusiasts, the iconic brand had fallen out of favour with the British public, but it would be Rose Marie Bravo’s decision to hire Christopher Bailey as the new creative director, which would see
the triumphant return of Burberry to its rightful place as a leading and global, yet quintessentially British brand.
corporate art direction; marketing and overall branding that makes Bailey’s, and Burberry’s, such a success story.
Prior to his appointment at Burberry, Christopher Bailey had been the womenswear designer at Donna Karan from1994 to 1996 & senior designer of womenswear at Gucci from 1996 to 2001. After his appointment to Burberry in 2001, Bailey became responsible for the design of all Burberry collections and product lines, including Burberry Prorsum, Burberry London and Thomas Burberry. But perhaps it is his leadership and the direction in which he has taken the company through his
First it is worth noting that Christopher Bailey knows trench coats. There isn’t anything he hasn’t done already with Burberry’s trenches and if there is, then it probably isn’t worth doing. Whether it’s made from bright shiny metallic fabric, covered in feathers or hand painted flowers, Bailey continuously manages to reinvent the brands 134 year old classic design with great success every time. But the best thing about Bailey’s trench coats are the people he gets to wear them. Continued

We’ll wait while you Google it... Bailey has catapulted Burberry into the stratosphere. If, one day he wakes up and decides
on a career change, perhaps he might want to look into becoming a casting director. And while you might think where does he go from there, the brand most recently unveiled a campaign featuring two of Britain’s most iconic models, Kate Moss and Cara Delevigne. His casting and marketing skills come second only to his skill as a designer, having won numerous 28
awards including Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2005, and Menswear Designer of the Year at the BFA’s in 2007 and 2008. He has also received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Huddersfield in 2007 to add to the Honorary Doctorate he received in 2006 from the University of Westminster. But awards and trench coats aside, it was Christopher Bailey’s decision that Burberry would show at

The beauty of the blazer is its versatility; it looks fantastic worn with a plain white tee and skinny jeans and equally as fabulous over a LBD or a pair of sleek tailored trousers. It’s both feminine and masculine and sits artfully between the casual and formal. It’s incredibly important that you choose a blazer that is tailored too and complimentary of your figure – if you can afford to, then we would always recommend having one made bespoke. However there are lots of fabulous versions available to buy straight off the peg. Whether you’re having one made or buying in store, a good blazer should always lie smooth when buttoned. Even if you will never wear it buttoned, do button it up and check there are no bumps or bulges.

SS15 CATWALK REPORT
LONDON Burberry Prorsum – London Fashion Week SS15 Christopher Bailey’s “The Birds & The Bees” themed catwalk show certainly had the audience buzzing. Apart from the clothes being absolutely beautiful, (who’d of thought bugs could be so cute?) the show was entirely immersive, with soulful music from James Bay, and was a treat to watch. The clothing was energetic through it’s bold use of colour, from beetle green to wasp yellow, and creative in it is use of fabric. Layered skirts were made from mesh similar to that used for mosquito nets and were worn with close-fitting denim jackets and sneakers (flats are IN) whilst the famous raincoats of Burberry were shown in bright colours with the waists cinched in with delicate tulle, evocative of insect wings.
Paul Smith – London Fashion Week SS15 Whilst stripes and floral prints are Smith’s usual aesthetic, this collection saw him turn to fringing, tuxedo lapels and drop hems. The opening looks were deconstructed, loosely tailored pieces in taupe, cornflower blue, and blush rose in linens and ticking stripe, with the aforementioned tuxedo lapels and fringes, but the use of the new elements was subtle, with wearable results. It is plain to see that menswear is at the heart of the Paul Smith brand but he brought to this collection a hint of femininity through sheer fabrics and silks.
For some people, fashion week lasts all year

NEW YORK Monique Lhuillier Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SS15 It was Lhuillier’s intention to capture the beauty of the Bahamas, to where she had recently travelled, in fabric form. Through the use of colour and iridescent fabric, varying from sky blue and aquamarine, to peach and lavender and featuring 3D floral embellished day pieces and sequin covered cocktail wear, while a metallic finish applied to many of the items gave a sense of the shimmering sea.

BCBG MAX AZRIA Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SS15 Cast in a series of muted colours, BCBG Max Azria perfectly embodied spring 2015’s ethereal trend with lots of floor sweeping frocks, feminine hemlines and faded patterns. With the only sense of structure coming from a series of jackets the collection gave off a bohemian and airy vibe. The beautifully cut fabric appeared to skim the form of the models, giving a sense of entirely effortless elegance.

SS15 CATWALK REPORT
PARIS Balmain – Paris Fashion Week SS15 Balmain's Olivier Rousteing said his starting point this season was last season's after-party. On the runway were white or black grills of fabric, transparent plastic that revealed the skin beneath, cut-outs at the midriff, see-through black chiffon at the legs, hazard-yellow dresses with strategic gaps or onesies with rivulets of sparkling stripes. Inspired by Rhianna and certain (much-liked) photo on instagram, the Balmain Spring 2015 show was all about handing over sexual power to women. But I hasten to add, it was not a tasteless display of skin on skin. Rather, it was youthful, exciting and perfect for the woman who wants to get noticed.
MILAN Dolce & Gabbana – Milan Fashion Week SS15 From columns of black lace to corsets & bullfighter jackets, the D&G show was full of Latin spirit. It shouted “Spain is the new Sicily!” as they channelled the Spanish influence on southern Italy and Sicily which goes back centuries. The show was huge, but inside, fighting to get out, was a straightforward story of leggy silhouettes, romantic full skirts, and ornate embellishment on simple shapes.
You may have the universe, if I may have Italy. Giuseppe Verde 36

The seed of this utopian idea emerged from creating an atelier dedicated solely to designing, developing and crafting a small series of radical concept watches with talented professionals he respected and enjoyed working with. The seed took root and with MB&F - Maximilian B端sser & Friends - the dream became real. MB&F is not a watch brand, it is an artistic and micro-engineering concept laboratory in which changing collectives of independent horological professionals are assembled each year to design and craft radical Horological Machines.
Respecting tradition without being shackled by it enables MB&F to act as a catalyst in fusing traditional high-quality watchmaking with cutting-edge technology and avant-garde threedimensional sculpture. But MB&F is even more than that: they are a community. A community of independentminded people sharing similar thoughts and values. They are a team of independent people creating horological art for other independent people, who believe horology should induce strong emotion.
43
They thrive on the adrenaline rush of innovation and learn by looking at life from another perspective, with the sole aim to recreate the magical awe of childhood. They are aware that the majority will not be ready for them, because MB&F confronts and challenges; however, for those who do share their values and ideas, you will be welcomed as a Friend. With just two UK stockists, we challenge you to find a more unique, innovative and exclusive range of timepieces. mbandf.com
INVESTMENT
Liquid Investment Investing in wine is by no means a new phenomenon. For years before fine wine became truly global, savvy consumers would often purchase far more than they intended to drink with a view of selling the excess at a later date to subsidise future purchases. Investment sponsored by www.stewartgroves.com
By Fergus Stewart, Private Account Manager, Berry Bros. & Rudd
wines from other regions have proved to be sound investments over the past 20 years, though it is important to remember that one must take a long term view, ideally of at least eight to ten years. The fine wine market enjoyed an exceptionally buoyant period from 2005 to 2007, and customers who bought the best wines from Bordeaux at the right time will have done very well indeed. Wine prices are not immune to economic malaise however, and the global financial crises did bite
The advent of more available consumer information, spearheaded by Robert Parker and his Wine Advocate publication, opened the world of fine wine to a broad base of potential buyers and investors. In today’s market, as the global demand and consumption of the World’s finest wines increases, opportunity exists to build a collection of wines to provide a financial return over the longer term. The best wines of Bordeaux, Burgundy and a number of iconic 44
in October 2008 and again in 2011. At both times, prices – notably those of the top 2005s in 2008 and the top 2008s in 2011 – dropped off from their peaks. Whilst Bordeaux should remain the key focus, wines from other countries and regions may have a larger role within the broadening market. The finest wines of Burgundy, Rhône, Champagne, Italy and the iconic wines of the New World are now a consideration for the collector and investor alike.
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1999
1998, Petrus, Pomerol
Tips for investing in fine wine: Timescale – Wine investment is a long term proposition. Be prepared to hold the wines for at least five years, ideally ten. Amount – Whilst you can invest in cases for as little as a few hundred pounds, the most desirable and tradable wines will most likely start from around £800 per dozen, rising to many thousands for rare icons such as Ch. Petrus from Bordeaux and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from Burgundy. Advice – Always seek advice from a leading merchant who will be able to tell you the best strategy for maximising your chances of returns. Storage – For wine investment, all wines should be packaged in their original cases and stored in a bonded warehouse. This helps guarantee provenance, avoids unnecessarily paying Duty and VAT and helps maximise potential returns upon sale. Storage rates with Berry Bros. & Rudd are £10.80 per dozen, per year, inclusive of insurance. Selling – There are a number of options when it comes to selling the cases you have laid down for investment. Often, a merchant will make an offer on the cases for their own stock. A broking list or online
trading platform such as Berrys’ Broking Exchange (BBX) is a very good way of listing your wines and will reach a large audience. Expect to pay a sales commission of around 10% on any sale. Fine wines also feature in auctions, although beware of provenance and auction fees if opting for this route. Provenance – Provenance is key to the value of fine wine. Buying from an established wine merchant who offers guarantees of the stock is highly recommended.
I have known Stewart for many years professionally and have been delighted with the advice and help I have been given. I would urge anyone to deal with him who wants a trustworthy service with sound advice.
The fundamentals behind wine investment are relatively simple; fine wine is a tangible asset, it is a luxury product that many aspire to own, consume and know more about. For many people it’s much more useful than gold, and easier to enjoy than art. Interest in wine is growing at all levels. Most important is supply, which is limited; the supply of any particular vintage of Ch. Margaux for example is constantly diminishing and in the case of younger vintages is constantly improving and so desirability increases.

Kelly Hoppen Author of eight design books, recipient of an MBE for her services to Interior Design and an investor on BBC2’s “Dragons Den”, Kelly Hoppen has not only contributed enormously to the interiors industry, she has inspired and influenced the design aesthetic of homes all over the world. As well as being able to shop by room or by item, visitors to the site will find constantly updated exclusive style tips, video teasers and how-to’s, alongside insightful customer Q&As.
Renowned for her elegant use of neutral tones and natural textures, Kelly Hoppen has launched her own collection of home accessories, available to purchase online, from bed linen, cushions and furniture to candles and gifts. While Kelly has showcased her home product design skills in collaborations with select licensees over the years, kellyhoppen.com marks the first time she has made a full collection of her work available to purchase online.
We caught up with the UK’s most celebrated designer, to find out about her new website, what influences her aesthetic and how you can achieve her sophisticated signature look in your own home.
48
Your new website looks fantastic. It’s very interactive, with lots of tips and videos for visitors. How important was it to you that it wasn’t just a place people could shop? I wanted the website to have a beautiful collection of luxury but affordable products and helpful advice that will inspire people, and give them the confidence to create the home of their dreams. No one needs to copy my style, I just want to show people what works and then encourage them to create their own vision. My hope is that guests and users of the site will be thrilled by the whole shopping experience, from viewing the range of products to browsing the Art of Home, through to ordering and then finally the delivery.
With such a pure and elegant aesthetic, where do you look for inspiration?
If you could design for anybody, who would it be and why?
I find inspiration everywhere, from travelling the globe sourcing accessories to reading books, and watching films whilst I relax in the beautiful English countryside. Inspiration mainly comes to me when I take a few minutes away from my normal routine to just sit back and reset my mind.
I love Pharrell and Tom Ford. It would be amazing to design their homes and work closely with them on new ideas. It has also always been one of my dreams to design a theatre or film set as well.
I always find inspiration during my downtime, i.e. when away on holiday, spending time with friends, watching movies, seeing an exhibition. It can come from anywhere but always when I am relaxed. Anywhere abroad, I love to travel, it always inspires me.
Learn to look not just with your eyes but with your heart. Find the things that connect with you. How else will you know how to design your home? - Kelly Hoppen
The website marks the first time that your collection is available to purchase by the general public, do you have a favourite, stand-out piece?
Your design work has taken you all over the world, would you say there has been a project that has most excited you or that you are most proud of?
Organic coral is one of my favourite home jewellery pieces, it’s the perfect contrast against the clean lines of modern design, and can be used to quickly create a mood of contemporary elegance. A single piece placed in a large vase can create a beautiful focal piece on your coffee table. I also love my collection of vases, especially the Luna and the pinched vase.
I’m proud of all my projects, it’s hard to pick one… there is a recent project which I’m very proud of, I’ve been working with LUX* Island Resorts as Creative Director for the brand. I’ve completed the honeymoon suites, the villas and cafe and the whole design was finished this year. As creative director, I’m excited about what I’m going to bring to the brand and resorts. 49
We absolutely love you on Dragon’s Den, do you find that you are naturally drawn to applicants who propose business ideas that are akin to your own industry? I am always to open to new businesses and helping young entrepreneurs. I have recently invested in a company called Skinny Tan, Reviveaphone and a tea brand called The Box of T. Applicants need to have great drive and business acumen. I am always drawn to the person who is pitching and not just the business itself. Are there any key interior design trends that we should look out for this season? I do not follow trends but as you all know, for me, neutrals still rock and always will as far as I'm concerned, but the added bits like art, photography etc, can be anything and everything. If you could give our readers a top tip when it comes to designing their homes, what would it be? Don’t overdo trends or try and be too clever, and remember that there still can be too much of a good thing! Over kill is never a good look. Also take the time to put together a mood board. It is very important to plan, plan, plan, in the long run it will save you money. Shop Kelly’s collection online at www.kellyhoppen.com

Boutique Chic 01
Set the scene for a luxurious living chic boutique inspired look. Sumptuous fabrics in deep rich colours should be used in abundance to create an opulent and glamorous space. Jewel tones such as indigo and mauve are perfect colours for achieving this look. Coordination is key, pick just two or three colours and then mix and match throughout. Choose a coffee table in dark wood and top it with few fashionable books and a vase of fresh cut flowers.

Ginger & Jagger Founded in Europe, in 2012, Ginger & Jagger pride themselves on producing exceptionally made and exquisitely designed furniture for lovers of beauty. Inspired by nature, their current collection “Earth to Earth” is unique, contemporary and original. Produced in Oporto, Portugal, a land of age-old traditions and craftsmen, the “Earth to Earth” collection combines the aesthetics of nature with the expertise of their designers, bringing you rare case goods and lighting pieces.

Framed metal moulded cast vine branches surround this nature inspired mirror.
copper and marble, the collection based on earth, returning to earth, is designed to enable you to surround yourself with the most beautiful forms and materials that nature has to offer. Ginger & Jagger are a brand whose creative process is based on the origins of the world, character and quality, rooted in multiculturalism. Their designs take on fascinating forms and would not look out of place in even the most fashionable of settings.
Rosebush Oval Dining Table Inspired by real rose bush branches, this stunning dining table combines the beauty of nature with exceptional metal work and welding. The glass table top means that the framework can go on being admired from all angles.
Halo Console The Halo Console was born out of a fascination with the shapes formed by swirling seaweed in an ocean storm. The base, constructed from textured brass, is crowned by a clear acrylic surface – symbolic of the purity of water.
Nenuphar Coffee Table Inspired by the ‘nenuphar’ or ‘water lily’ this coffee table is constructed from various woods, set at different, cascading heights. The “leaf’s veins” are imagined and created using the marquetry technique.
Bond Wall Lamp The Bond Wall Lamp is a significant piece in the collection. Its design is symbolic of the relationship and close bond of Ginger & Jagger. With two completely different personalities, love nourishes and unites them. This is reflected in the exterior arc, designed from polished hammered brass, encasing the interior arc which is made from brushed brass.
Eden Rug
Blossom Side Table
The rich and varied textures found in nature, are clear sources of inspiration, from feathers and leaves to reptilian scales, the Eden rug is lush and evocative of the first garden. The contrasting colours of the wool only add to the rug’s sinuosity.
Inspired again by the beauty of the rosebush, the Blossom Side Table’s legs are designed as three rose branches, meeting at a point, symbolizing the bond between Ginger & Jagger. The elegant legs are finished with vintage metal feet whilst the table surface is fashioned from marble.

Restaurant Review:
The Earl of Doncaster Art Deco dining delight The four star Earl of Doncaster has been standing proud on tree lined Bennetthorpe since 1938 and is the largest independent hotel in the town. Its owners have invested over £2.5million into an impressive refurbishment in recent years seeing the impressive Art Deco exterior followed on throughout the hotel. The best example of how the hotel pays homage to the grand era is its restaurant ‘The Café Bar Concerto’ which boasts superb surroundings, an extensive A la Carte menu and stylish Cocktail Bar. The first thing to notice is the grand piano guarding an entrance which opens out into a very elegant and grand space lined with mirrors and rouched curtains, and typical Art Deco palms and arches. The next is the bar; a huge and vastly stocked centrepiece. The whole place plays to an experience, like you’re in the movies. It’s almost 1920 and you’re sitting down to dine with Carey
Mulligan in the Great Gatsby The atmosphere is just right. There’s a conference in the morning so the restaurant is nicely full providing an ambience perfect for both romance and celebration. The restaurant is popular even at lunchtimes as ‘ladies that lunch’ meet for afternoon tea and the suits of the town meet for a bite. The new menu caters for all too, it extensively and with an aura of experience shows off all the classics as well as some more inventive choices. Choose fish, pasta or pizza if you feel like keeping it simple or for an absolute staple try the famous ‘Earl steak’.
66
Opt for mouth watering local beef or sample the renowned Wagyu ‘Kobe’ beef fillet. We had chosen well as we were delighted with the presentation of what came to the table. The chef could handle a hunk of meat which was cooked to perfection in each of our dishes. The belly pork for example, tender enough to fall apart but with the all important crispy fatty layer we love, but know we shouldn’t. The vegetarian choice is a point of note, almost as if the chef has a family member he regularly cooks for. The dishes available are far from ‘just because we have to’ as is found all too often these days.
WE TRIED: TO START Pea, mint & goats cheese risotto // warm salad of belly pork with pan roasted apple and black pudding, apple & cider sauce MAIN
The wine list is more than decent and obviously well chosen, with bottles starting at the very affordable and reaching upwards of £60 plus catering for those with a keen appreciation for it. There’s also an equally impressive selection of Champagnes, perfect for special occasions. What shines through from the moment you enter The Cafe Bar Concerto, or in fact the hotel generally, is this is an establishment that is owned, managed and run by people who genuinely care for it. They want it to make its mark and show it is independent for a reason; because it stands out,
and the way it treats its guests does too. Our experience was delightful from start to finish. From the jolly Natalie who entertained with a smile throughout our whole meal, to the exceptionally cooked food and everything between. We tackled three generous courses just because each inspired us onto the next and left feeling happily satisfied. All in all, dinner at the Earl is like getting completely carried away, it’s like going back in time but in a purposeful contemporary way. It is indeed, not to be missed. 67
Escalope of Pork Cordon Bleu stuffed with ham and gruyère cheese &served with dauphinoise potatoes // 8oz Fillet steak served with vine tomatoes, field mushroom and a half portion of each hand cut chips and shoestring fries, onion rings & house salad with a perfect Bernaise sauce on the side. TO FINISH We shared a giant choux bun with crème patisserie and warm chocolate sauce.

Spooky Nights and Fire Side Bites... From ideas on how to give your home the fear factor at Halloween to moreish morsels to enjoy under the fireworks on bonfire night. Our seasonal party guide is here to ensure you throw the perfect party. Halloween doesn’t have to be all cheap costumes and childish treats. Follow our guide to throwing a devilishly grown up and ghoulish soiree, fit for even your most fearsome of friends...
What’s your poison? Bleeding Heart Martini Keep up the fear factor with a Bleeding Heart Martini, a drink with a pickled beet that “bleeds” from a wound caused by a cocktail spear.
Use a blackened Christmas garland to dress the banister for a dramatic look that is sure to set the tone as your guests arrive.
Ingredients (Serves 4)
Achieve a haunting atmosphere with a table laid with cobweb covered candelabra and blackened leaves. Take advantage of the season and collect dried, leaves and foliage to create a dramatic centre piece – this is the only time a dead floral arrangement actually works...
8 ounces premium gin
2 ounces dry vermouth Ice cubes 4 Pickled Baby Beets, each placed on a cocktail skewer Directions 1. Chill 4 Martini glasses in the freezer or fill with ice water and let sit until frosty, about 5 minutes (pour out water).
If you’re hosting a Halloween feast, then why not hunt around for old goblets, crystal cut glass and antique table-wear for an old fashioned and truly spooky look!
2. Add the vermouth, dividing evenly; swirl to coat the glasses, then pour out.
Large church candles in pumpkins and candles placed in empty champagne bottles will provide atmospheric and spooky lighting! Be sure to light them early so that they are already dripping wax when your guests arrive!
3. Add gin to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until chilled; divide among chilled glasses. 4. Garnish each with a skewered pickled baby beet, and serve immediately.
And there you have it. A totally terrifying setting for a fearsome night of debauchery! 69
FOOD & DRINK
Remember, remember... ...the absolutely incredible food you catered on bonfire night? Yes, hot dogs and cinder toffee are the traditional choice (we say obvious). But how about offering your guests something a little more impressive, hearty and warming? Here is our favourite recipe that we promise will go down a treat without causing you too much stress!
Spicy Chorizo Sausage Rolls Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200C and line a baking sheet with grease proof paper or baking parchment. 2. Finely chop the red onion. Ingredients makes about 20 bite sized sausage rolls
• 500g readymade puff pastry • 1/2 red onion • Tablespoons olive oil • Knob of butter • 100g chorizo sausage (buy spicy or mild to suit your tastes)
• 6 good quality pork sausages • 1/2 teaspoon paprika • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper • Salt and black pepper • 1 egg (for an egg wash)
3. Heat the olive oil and butter in the pan, gently fry the onion until soft and lightly browned. Remove from the pan and allow to cool. 4. Meanwhile, finely chop the chorizo sausage. In a large bowl, squeeze the sausage meat from the casings. Add in your chopped chorizo, cooled onion, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper. Using your hands, start mixing the ingredients together until well distributed throughout the mix and until everything has come together into one lump of sausage meat. 5. In a small bowl, crack your egg and whisk it up a little with a fork. This will be your egg wash. 70
6. Divide your pastry into 4, and roll each block out into rectangles about 30cm long and 15cm wide. Put a generous line of your sausage meat down the middle. Using a pastry brush, brush the egg wash down one side of the pastry. Roll the pastry over the sausage meat and press down gently to help it stick together. Cut into sections, about 12cm long. 7. Use a sharp knife to score lines into the top of the sausage rolls. 8. Arrange on the baking sheet, then brush all the sausage rolls with the egg wash. 9. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until they are puffed up and a deep golden brown on the top. 10. Serve warm, or transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Restaurant Review:
Sukhothai I love Thai food and have a particular penchant for cooking it from scratch as well as discovering good Thai eateries. Sukhothai, consistently listed in the Good Food Guide and being awarded by the Sunday Times as one of the top restaurants in the UK, would have a lot to live up to. Having decided to try and grab a last minute table after an event in Leeds, it was nice that the team at Headingley were so accommodating. We were led to a very pleasant table in the window by a beautiful and smiley traditionally dressed waitress. This restaurant is part of a small group of four restaurants in Leeds and Harrogate and the word is; it’s the home of authentic Thai cuisine. Since the venture began in 2002, Head Chef and owner Ban Kaewkraikhot has continued to win over a dedicated band of followers who confess to love
her unique and innovative approach to the menu and exceptional welcome and friendly service. Very recently refurbished, the standard of decor is high and displays all the touches you would expect from a traditional Thai establishment. Dark wood, lowered ceilings, orchids and a resident centrepiece Buddha, but with high end contemporary additions; chandeliers and crisp ever so white napkins. The surroundings and atmosphere complemented the menu really well, which too, boasts a mix of innovation and tradition. 72
We chose to go with the suggestion of the chef, it’s great to do this sometimes and let them show off the dishes they are particularly passionate about. The first dish brought to the table was a tiered platter of mixed entrées which were absolutely delightful. Home-made satay and sweet chilli dipping sauces served in pipettes and dishes to accompany succulent grilled chicken, huge king prawns in batter, chicken toast and filo ‘moneybags’ (Tung Thong) served on crispy noodles.
COOK LIKE THE CHEF: If like me you like to cook Thai, why not enhance your skills by joining in on one of the popular Chefs Master Classes? Held at Chapel Allerton, you’ll cook a starter, main and dessert and then sit down to eat the fruits of your labour. Leave with a goody bag too! For more information contact andy@sukhothai.co.uk peanuts and finished with vegetable carvings and plenty of chilli. To enjoy with our starter, it was suggested we tried a Thai salad. As this wasn’t something I’d ordered or made at home, I was overwhelmed by the flavours packed into it. Part of a ‘healthier’ lunchtime range on offer, the salads are fabulously varied. Ours (Som Tum) was exceptional and was made with shredded papaya, dried shrimp and
The next course was equally surprising as it was beautiful as the chef had decided to steer us away from the traditional green curry, Massaman and pad Thai. A stunning dish of lamb shank served with sticky coconut rice and a chicken and pineapple red curry dish provided an overwhelmingly complex and yet spectacular
73
flavour combination. Personally, I declared on social media afterwards that the lamb had that evening become my new favourite main course, ever! My dinner guest was equally delighted. Dessert was an equally delicious green tea ice cream and banana fritters followed by coffee with a ‘cow shaped’ milk jug. A little touch that nudges you to think again that Sukhothai is out to make an impression. A damn fine one it was too.

The Coronation of Poppea
Who: Annie Lennox
Claudio Monteverdi (1643)
What: Nostalgia
Leeds Grand Theatre, October
One of the most successful and talented artists in pop music history is back – and back like you have never heard her before. On October 27, Annie Lennox releases her seventh solo album, Nostalgia. The album is a collection of the iconic singer’s impassioned takes on standards primarily from the 1930s and 1940s, many of them popularized by the likes of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Jo Stafford and Louis Armstrong.
Based loosely on actual events in 1st-century AD Rome, The Coronation of Poppea charts the consuming erotic obsession of the Emperor Nero for the beautiful Poppea Sabina. Ruthlessly sweeping aside anyone who stands in the way of their union, (including Nero’s wife Octavia and the poet and philosopher Seneca) Nero and Poppea triumph over all their opponents and rejoice in one of the most sexually-charged love duets ever written. A cast of superb singer-actors is led by the American soprano Sandra Piques Eddy (Poppea) and the British counter-tenor James Laing (Nerone). The conductor is Laurence Cummings, one of Britain’s most exciting and versatile exponents of historically-informed performance.
Who: Hozier What: Hozier Hozier has confirmed the release of his selftitled debut album, available in the UK, 6th October. The record was co-produced by the singer himself and Rob Kirwan and was recorded in Hozier's attic in Wicklow as well as the Cauldron, Westland and Exchequer Studios in Dublin. The 13-track album includes the sublimely written, 'Take Me To Church', 'Sedated' and 'From Eden', with a deluxe version of the release featuring a further four new tracks.
Who: Bryan Adams What: Tracks of My Years Iconic multi-platinum recording-artist Bryan Adams is set to release his first studio album in more than six years with Tracks Of My Years, a diverse collection of time honoured classics from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, announced today. Releasing September 30, Tracks Of My Years is co-produced by Adams, David Foster and Bob Rock, and includes ten cover songs featuring a wide range of influential musical styles, from Chuck Berry’s Rock & Roll Music, Ray Charles’ I Can’t Stop Loving You to the Beatles’ Any Time At All.
The Woman in Black Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the novel by Susan Hill Sheffield Lyceum, 21st – 25th October Unanimously acclaimed by the critics, The Woman in Black combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir. The formula delivers an evening of unremitting drama, transporting the audience into a terrifying and ghostly world. Now celebrating its 25th year in the West End, over 7 million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most chilling and successful theatre events ever staged.

First and foremost there are the songs. Songs which dance to Nick’s offbeat tones and rhythms. His unorthodox guitar playing (aided by a Cuban guitar course which taught him how to make the most of his quickdraw picking technique) adds a certain Spanish flavour to his sound, spinning Nick into a world which straddles the leftfield. Not a stranger to a high calibre of musicianship (he played a relatively new, otherworldly instrument called the Hang in his old band), Nick often takes the complex route in setting down his arrangements, for a wholly satisfying listener experience.

OFFICE LIFE
Getting Ahead at Work Professional success relies on good manners. From business trips, bosses and the boardroom to clients, colleagues and office culture, behaviour in the workplace has never been more important. This month, we take a look at Office Conduct & Meetings and share with you some top tips for surviving the working battlefield.
Office Conduct Conform to an office's working model. For example, take 20-minute lunches, leave domestic and emotional dramas at home and keep social phone chat to a minimum.
Always be discreet. Never discuss salary with your colleagues.
Be acquainted with people from all rungs of the ladder, from the boss to the post room.
Respect confidentiality. Keep things to yourself when necessary and resist the temptation to pass on any sensitive information (professional or personal).
Respect employee hierarchy, the elders and those with more company years than you.
Illicit material spreads like wildfire so talk with caution within the office walls.
Remember good email etiquette and mobile phone manners.
Beware of gossip. Gossips are usually presumed to be untrustworthy. 84
Shouting down juniors is embarrassing for everybody. If necessary, calm criticism has far more impact. Never ignore printer paper jams or low toners. Struggling in when sick will sometimes win you some points, but never if you're contagious. Look keen and committed - the odd evening sacrificed to the office will score you bonus points.

If you are the host, check that everyone is settled and comfortable before you begin. Introduce everyone to each other; a handshake is usual for the office. Social kissing should be saved for very close or long standing clients and colleagues. Business cards should be exchanged at the beginning of the meeting. Take some brief notes - it will cast a good impression. Participate and engage in the discussion but don't monopolise the meeting. Be interested in and responsive to presentations.
Maximum online advertising exposure across relevant job boards Fast professional response Low costs all the way - no hidden extras

On the Ball
Ever since Victoria Beckham posted a snap of her working and walking on one of these babies we’ve been dying to find an excuse to talk about them. The act of standing alone is proven to help you burn more calories at work so add a gentle stroll into the equation and we guarantee you’ll be looking your best come the Christmas party. The TR5000DTZ Treadmill Desk features independent shock absorbers to isolate the walking deck from the frame and Intelli-Step™, which counts and records the number of steps you take, displaying them on the console.
Not seen one in a while? They’re a classic exercise solution for office workers but aren’t exactly the most glamorous bit of kit. But their 80’s vibe shouldn’t put you off, think how toned your legs are going to be after a few weeks of working out with one of these, as you redraft that proposal or balance the books. They’re quiet too, so shouldn’t be distracting for you or your colleagues (who think you’re looking great by the way...)
Supposedly, by sitting on the ball, you’ll improve your posture and spinal alignment while getting a powerful core-strengthening workout. The idea that we could get abs of steel just from sitting at our desk is pretty appealing. They even throw in a desktop workout guide to provide an effective low-impact workout and stretching routine. So no excuses.

You may be an Excel champ by day and gym rat by night, but recent research suggests that the recommended 30 minutes of cardio five times per week may not undo the health risks of a sedentary lifestyle. So here are some easy tips on how to be more active during the 9-5. Ps. MODE cannot be responsible for any injury caused by exercising at work or the looks you may get for doing so.
1. Take the Stairs It might sound obvious but taking the stairs is great way to bet your heart pumping. Accelerate on the straight and take two at a time every other flight for a real leg burn. Plus taking the stairs means you get to avoid awkward elevator chat. Phew.
2. Be sociable Take a stroll down the hall to catch up with co-workers or welcome a new employee. Or, instead of dialling extensions and sending lazy emails to the manager two doors down, put in some face time. Just be wary of stopping by the biscuit barrel.
3. Stand up Long periods of sitting are linked to increased risk for diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease, whereas standing significantly increases your daily caloric expenditure. Stand whenever you can, and consider roping in other co-workers to have standing meetings too!
4. Squeeze those cheeks Believe it or not, some deskercises can be kept under wraps, and this isometric glutes exercise is one of them. To start toning, simply squeeze the buttocks, hold for 5-10 seconds, and release. Repeat until the agenda wraps up or the glutes tire. The results will be uplifting in more ways than one.

5. Get lifting Whether you lift a stapler or you’ve got a handy set of dumbbells that live under your desk, performing a few repetitions of the traditional bicep curl is a sure fire way to tone up your arms at the office. Starting at the thighs, bend the elbow and curl the arm up towards the chest, just like a regular dumbbell biceps curl. Pause momentarily and then lower the stapler back down. Continue for 12-15 reps, then switch.

EE Buzzard in-car 4G Hotspot £59 ee.co.uk
Men's Deerskin Leather Driving Gloves £81 dents.co.uk
EE’s own-brand devices all have a bird of prey theme and the Buzzard is a car-optimised 4G Wi-Fi hotspot. The bright yellow drink-can sized packaging actually makes the thing look more interesting than it is, as inside it is a pretty regular 4G USB dongle made by Huawei and a 12v car charger. Plug the former into the latter and the latter into the fag lighter and the dongle generates a Wi-Fi network that can support up to ten devices at a time.
There could be no better time than autumn to adopt wearing driving gloves. We recommend theses men's unlined deerskin leather driving gloves with keyhole back, knuckle holes and punched holes on the fingers from Dents.
Highway 163 - U.S. A little bit different from the twisty roads we have previously featured, but for good reason. The 64 mile motorway runs from Arizona to Utah and has had many films and adverts shot there including Mission Impossible, 2001: A Space Odyessey and Forrest Gump.
93
Along the route there is the very scenic Monument Valley, with sandstone towers over 1,000 feet tall you could film your own Wild West movie. But the main reason is how vast it is, how unique the landscape is, not to mention the filling stations that haven’t changed much since the 50’s.

Sleek, low, coupé-like exterior proportions combine with an efficient package that is instantly recognisable as a true Jaguar. Ian Callum, Jaguar Director of Design
The Jaguar XE The Jaguar XE redefines the concept of the sports saloon and is attempting to be the driver’s car in its class. Its lightweight construction, streamlined styling, luxurious interior and outstanding ride and handling are testament to company founder Sir William Lyons’ vision: ‘The car is the closest thing we will ever create to something that is alive’. Jaguar created the blueprint for the first ever sports saloon with the iconic Mk II, a car which distilled sports car performance and dynamics into a stylish four-door body. The new XE builds on this unique heritage, combining Jaguar’s unrivalled expertise in lightweight construction with exquisite lines, sharp radii and perfectly executed surfaces.
The rear-drive XE is the only vehicle in its class to use an aluminium-intensive monocoque. This extremely robust yet light structure, together with double wishbone front suspension and an Integral Link rear axle, is fundamental to the XE’s sublime handling.

Jaguar’s world-leading expertise in aluminium structure engineering enables exceptional fuel consumption and emissions figures: with the new Ingenium diesel engines, the XE can achieve 75mpg and 99g/km CO2 – the most efficient Jaguar yet.
But for those who require a bit more power there is the XE S, powered by the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine from the acclaimed Jaguar F-TYPE, capable of 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds. The XE is the stiffest, most aerodynamic Jaguar saloon car ever built. It is also the first Jaguar to be equipped with electric power steering, tuned to provide exceptional responsiveness and feel but with lower energy consumption than hydraulic systems. The XE also offers the lowest cost of ownership and most environmentally sustainable credentials of all Jaguar models.
taste, with each XE designed to offer an unrivalled combination of steering response, ride comfort, refinement and performance. These attributes are matched to the sleek, perfectly-proportioned exterior styling and the premium materials and meticulous attention to detail defining the interior. As the most advanced sports saloon that Jaguar has produced, the new XE is instantly recognisable as a Jaguar, its aluminium skin formed around the fundamental principles of perfect proportions and aerodynamic efficiency. The new XE looks and feels like no other car in its class.
From luxurious to high-performance, the XE range offers a model perfectly suited to every

DISCOVERY SPORT It wasn’t enough for Land Rover to simply announce the arrival of the new Land Rover Discovery Sport at Spaceport America earlier in September. Not only did they announce the new SUV, the world’s most capable premium compact SUV but also they launched the Land Rover Galactic Discovery competition. The Discovery Sport marks the introduction of the first new member of the expanding Discovery family, it also brings the versatility of 5+2 seating to the compact premium SUV market
The first member of the new Discovery family, Discovery Sport, features 5+2 seating in a footprint no larger than any existing 5-seat premium SUVs. With the announcement of competition of galactic proportions bolstering interest in the new Discovery Sport it is important to mention that the adventure does not apply only to the epic prize at stake. The spirit of adventure is reflected in the Discovery Sport’s interior, which has been designed with customers at its core. It features high-quality materials and a strong vertical centre console graphic to reflect the premium design of the exterior, while the core Discovery value of versatility is evident everywhere. Storage solutions are integrated into the cabin and up to four 12V power points and six USB charging sockets can be specified for all three rows of seating, allowing multiple electronic devices to be charged simultaneously. A host of innovations have allowed Discovery Sport to introduce the versatility of 5+2 seating into the premium compact SUV class for the first
time. An all-new multi-link rear axle not only provides engaging driving dynamics but it also provides ample and flexible cabin space behind the second row. Coupled with supple long-travel suspension, the innovative rear axle also ensures the Discovery Sport is comfortable, refined and rewarding to drive on-road, while retaining the breadth of allterrain capability for which Land Rover is worldrenowned. In fact, with approach, departure and breakover angles of 25, 31 and 21 degrees respectively, Terrain Response® technology, and the ability to wade to 600mm, Discovery Sport offers class-leading capability in all conditions. As with every new Land Rover, safety has been a key priority in the development of the new Discovery Sport, resulting in a first-in-class pedestrian airbag, autonomous emergency
