MODE Features Editor: Sophia It’s my job to write about the things I love, bring you the hottest trends and bang up to date news from across Yorkshire and beyond! Most of the features will have crossed my desk before reaching you, so of course I hope you enjoy them. I’ll start by wishing you all a Happy New Year! In this issue we’ve covered the basics because a New Year issue just wouldn’t be complete without a few pointers on how to better yourself and start the new year on a high. Plus we’ve also been speaking with our favourite new lingerie brand, set to make waves in 2015, Love Haus – it’s a feature we’re confident both the ladies and the gents will enjoy. We’re already hard at work on the next issue & I’m pleased to announce it will see the return of ‘The Man Issue’ so if you’d like to feature in the manliest magazine around then get in touch; sophia@mode.mg, I’d love to hear from you. Welcome to ‘The New Year Issue. Quite honestly, I can’t believe 2015 is here but I am happy to welcome it with open arms! We’re very excited to bring you this first issue of the year and we’ve worked exceptionally hard to ensure it’s got the right amount of everything for just about everyone. From Health & Fitness, Homes & Gardens, Style Beauty and Motors we’ve got it all and much, much more. As it’s a New Year we’ve been sure to include a few features on how to make a difference to your health and wellbeing. If like me, you’re a sucker for chocolate and a cocktail, be sure to give our Swap to Slim guide a look and find out what you can enjoy sans the guilt & extra calories! Or perhaps you’re bored of your current exercise routine or class and need some inspiration? If that’s the case, our resident health expert, Andrew Landells is on hand with his Class of 2015 guide to the workouts set to be trending in 2015. I ought also to address the cover, isn’t it fab?! We’ve been speaking with Love Haus, an incredibly sexy and luxurious lingerie brand that we predict will explode in 2015. Already attracting a celebrity clientele this stellar new lingerie house, brought

to us by the woman behind Beach Bunny, is sure to set pulses racing. If you’re planning a move this year, you might want to consider the luxury property featured in this issue? Lofties is arguably one of the most exceptional homes in the region and it could be yours, plus with its own indoor pool and gymnasium you’ll be able to keep up with your ‘New You’ resolution…. Finally I must mention the fantastic range of motors in this issue. We’ve been out test driving some fabulous cars and also keeping our ears close to the ground, following whisperings of a big new release in 2016. If you love cars, we promise you’ll love this issue. So there we have it, a few highlights for you to enjoy but, trust me, I’ve hardly scratched the surface, I’ll let you discover the rest for yourself. We’d love to hear what you’ve enjoyed reading, perhaps you could tweet us @MODEmagazines, and who knows, you could be featured in the next issue!

Battle of the Boxes If it’s a new Stevie the TV you’re after this year then might you consider investing in 4K? Also known as ultra HD or UHD, it’s the next generation of television picture quality, displaying four times the detail of HD. Here are our top 3 choices for a supreme screen experience at home.

Panasonic TX-P55VT65B £2,050 Regardless of the source, whether it’s Games Console, Netflix, Blu-ray or plain old TV, Panasonic are kings of picture quality. The overall design is also impressive, Panasonic have really upped their game in the styling department meaning that even when your set is off it will still be looking fantastic. It has Freeview HD and Freesat TV tuners built in. It has active, and effective, 3D, built-in wi-fi and more inputs than you need. Also a great smart TV interface, with a Touch Pen for writing on the screen and a built-in camera for Skype. If there was a party and all the guests were TV’s this would be the one with all the bells on. Screen size: Resolution: Display technology: Weight:

55in 1318 x 767 NeoPlasma black 3000 38.5kg with stand, 31.5kg without stand

Sony KDL-50W829B £900 As the cheapest of the bunch you’d be forgiven for thinking there must be a catch. A 4K Smart TV for less than £1000? Really. And they’ve not scrimped on design either. It is sleek and slender, and at just 14kg it is light but still very sturdy and stable. Not short on ports at the rear so you’ll be able to plug in all the additional tech you wish. Sony have also rebooted their SMART TV offering, making it easier to navigate and really quite good looking. The picture quality is also great so to be honest, we’re a little stumped on how a set this impressive is quite so cheap but we’ll not question it for too long, we’ll just go buy 4 instead. Screen size: Resolution: Display technology: Weight:

Samsung UE55HU7500 4K TV £2,200 Can we start by saying how attractive this TV is? It’s good looking but not in a showy kind of way, it’s the type of TV that will look great in your living room without dominating. If you are a movie buff with a sound system to rival your local cinema then you’ll be happy to learn that the UE55HU7500 can handle anything you throw at it with more sockets than you can shake a stick at. When it comes to screen resolution it checks all the boxes. The images are super sharp and it also delivers in HD and standard resolution, an area earlier 4K models struggled in. Screen size: Resolution: Display technology: Weight:

55in 3840 x 2160 LCD with LED backlight 21.1kg with stand, 17.8kg without stand 12

Protein World Slender Blend Review I’ve always been a little sceptical when it comes to protein shakes and powdered diets promising a slimmer and healthier you. How can 4 scoops of powder possibly give me the supermodel physique I so desperately want, whilst still providing me with all the nutrients I need to stay healthy? And most importantly will it taste good? Often weight loss shakes are designed to be taken with water and this usually puts me off entirely but you’re permitted to use milk (yay!) and whilst I did choose to have one shake a day with water (to save on milk) I was very impressed with the taste and would even go as far to say as I looked forward to my breakfast shake! I guess that means they deliver on their second promise too of quality. Not only did their shake taste delicious, the diet they further instructed me to adopt was beginning to improve my overall health.

So when my Protein World delivery arrived in all its yellow branded glory, I opened the box with trepidation, a dose of scepticism and sheer curiosity. Did this brilliantly yellow box hold the secret to my weight loss success? I resolved to follow the guidelines, laid out in the handy booklet I received, to the letter. If I was going to be able to honestly review this ‘miracle’ shake I needed to give it every chance to work. How does it work? Protein World says that their healthy Weight Loss Plan focuses on three key points to help you slim down and stay slim. 1. Satiety (feeling of fullness) 2. Quality 3. Convenience Along with their nutritious shakes, Protein World provides you with meal suggestions to encourage a complementary healthy lifestyle. It can be said that unlike some ‘diet shakes’ Protein World endeavour to educate you on nutrition so that you’re actively working towards living a more nutritiously balanced and healthy lifestyle rather than just using their powdered protein mixes as quick fix solutions. They even include a list of foods to enjoy and foods to avoid helping you on your way, along with lots of easy to make recipes (try the pancakes!) and meal plans to make sure you achieve your weight loss goals. So on paper it all sounds good, it’s packaged well and so far you’re impressed but how did it work in the real world? I received The Weight Loss Collection, consisting of their bestselling weight loss shake, ‘Slender Blend’, and additional supplements to take

alongside the shakes including, their ‘Fat Melter Capsules’, Multivitamins, plus they also threw in some ‘Luminous Capsules’ for good measure (thanks guys!). Following the programme, I had a Slender Blend shake for two meals whilst enjoying a protein rich meal for the third. I also took my Fat Melter capsules twice a day along with the multi vitamins and one Luminous Capsule. A bit about the Fat Melter Capsule – they’re made from green tea, caffeine, L-Tyrosine and cayenne pepper and are designed to help boost your metabolism and burn calories and fat fast, so naturally I wanted to take all 90 at once. I was anxious that a meagre 400ml milk shake would not sustain me until lunch but sure enough Protein World delivered on their first promise of satiety. The shake not only kept me feeling full but it tasted really good.

CHOCOLATE CHIP PROTEIN PANCAKES

Finally, is the Protein World Weight Loss Programme convenient? Definitely. We often blame a lack of time as a reason for poor diet choices, but with zero prep time and little needed in the way of ingredients, as in you just add water/ milk, the Slender Blend shake is most certainly convenient. It easily fit into my schedule and in fact saved me time in a morning allowing me to actually finish my tea or even decide on what to have for dinner in the evening. Overall the Weight Loss Collection worked for me. My skin felt brighter (get the Luminous Capsules), I stopped feeling bloated, I had more energy, I felt fuller and snacked less and I lost weight and inches! (5lbs and 1 ½ inches from my waist in 2 weeks to be exact) So would I recommend it? Most certainly. In fact I already have, and her order arrived yesterday. Tested by: Sophia King Taste: Effectiveness: Would you recommend it? Yes The Weight Loss Collection: £62 Proteinworld.com

Nutrition (Per serving) 464 Calories, 45.7g Protein, 24g Carbohydrates, 11g Sugar, 7.5g Fibre, 22g Fat

Ingredients

How to make it

40g (four yellow scoops) of protein powder - any flavour!

1. Add all your dry ingredients together into a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl or jug, lightly whisk together the milk and egg.

3 tbs coconut flour/almond flour/plain flour ¼ tsp baking powder 2 eggs 2 tbs of milk (almond/ coconut/dairy) 1 tbs chocolate chips

2. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and, using a fork, beat until you have a smooth batter. Any lumps will soon disappear with a little mixing! Add in your chocolate chips and mix them through the batter. Then let the batter stand for a few minutes.

16

3. Use extra virgin coconut oil or butter to grease up your pan. Add a ladle of batter (or two/three if your frying pan is big enough to cook more than one at the same time). Wait until the top of the pancake begins to bubble, then turn it over and cook until both sides are golden brown and the pancake has risen to about 1cm (½in) thick. Eat warm, sprinkled with your favourite toppings!

HEALTH & FITNESS

Swap to Slim So you’re one of those people who have resolved to get healthy this year (this year is so the year you’ll actually do it). Well despite the fact that it’s terribly clichéd and we hoped you might have come up with something a little more original, we’re behind you and we want to help. Getting healthy doesn’t have to be hard and perhaps a few, hardly noticeable food swaps might be more beneficial than the radical kale diet you’ve started that you’re definitely going to give up on.

Experts say it takes just 8 weeks to change your taste buds, so persevere and swap out some of those naughty treats for these healthier alternatives and you’ll learn to love them in time. Plus you’ll start

to feel more energetic, less moody, and trimmer as the pounds start to drop off and your blood sugar levels stabilise, all without any radical dieting!

Swap White Bread for Wholemeal Bread

Swap Chocolate for a Banana

Think of it this way, white bread has absolutely no nutritional value and therefore might as well be junk food. You’re consuming empty calories and the fast release energy it gives you will leave you feeling sluggish, bloated and hungry moments later. Wholemeal bread is full of fibre and vitamins, especially if you choose a seeded batch.

If it’s a sugar hit you’re craving then reach for a banana instead of sweets and chocolate treats. The natural sugars will give you the instant energy release you want but with so many more health benefits owing to the fibre and vitamins.

Swap Cocktails for Red Wine

Swap White Rice for Brown Rice

Our favourite swap of them all, it’s a win-win situation. Cocktails are usually high in sugar and if you are partial to a creamy one – then they’re full of fat too. A glass of red wine is not only more likely to be lower in calories, but a moderate amount can have health benefits, such as supporting the circulation system and lowering cholesterol.

Similarly to white bread, the refining process that makes your rice white, actually strips the grain of iron, vitamins, zinc, magnesium and other nutrients. Brown rice’s low glycemic rating won’t give you the blood sugar spike that white does, and as it’s got far more fibre, it won’t leave you bloated and hungry. 18

Swap Iceberg Lettuce for Spinach

Swap Jam for Peanut Butter

What you’re gaining here is extra nutrients. Whilst lettuce is hardly bad for you, it’s usually 96% water so doesn’t pack a whole lot of nutrients. Its darker leaf friends however, come full of vitamin K, calcium and iron – as well as vitamin A, which your body uses to fight skin conditions like eczema, acne and cold sores.

Ditch sugary jam and chocolate spread and opt for a (no added sugar) peanut butter to top off your toast. It may be high in calories, but a little bit actually aids weight loss by keeping you full with its high fibre and protein content. So it will help keep fast food cravings at bay and your healthy eating plan on track.

Swap Milky Tea for Herbal Tea

Swap Mashed Potato for Carrot and Swede Mash

We aren’t saying you can’t have milky tea every so often but a high dairy intake isn’t great for weight loss. Many herbal teas boost your metabolism so you burn calories faster. And do we even need to tell you to cut out the spoonful of sugar too?

Next time sausage and mash is on the menu, try a veg mash instead. It’s still a starchy carb, which you need for energy, but its lower GI will keep your blood sugar level steady and help your body metabolise fat more efficiently.

Just because you’re eating clean, doesn’t mean you have to be a social pariah. Healthy eating restaurants are popping up all over so you can still enjoy a delicious dinner with friends without compromising on your diet!

Health News & Views UNDER THE SEA Seaweed could be the secret ingredient to losing weight, research has suggested. Tests showed that alginate, found in sea kelp, can suppress the digestion of fat in the gut. The findings showed that a four-fold increase in one type of alginate boosted anti-fat absorption by 75%. They’re also packed full of protein. Score! But be aware of their salt content at 6g per 100g it’s pretty high.

The picture isn’t pretty for guys who post a lot of selfies on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. A new study showed that men who posted more online photos of themselves than others scored higher on measures of narcissism and psychopathy. This may not come as a surprise but it is the first time it has actually been confirmed in a study.

A study found that found that the use of these devices before bedtime prolongs the time it takes to fall asleep, delays the circadian clock, suppresses levels of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, reduces the amount and delays the timing of REM sleep, and reduces alertness the following morning. Show Us Your Game Face You’re worried who you might bump into, you want to impress, or you suffer with bad skin. Sure, we all want to look our best – even midway through an intense kettlebells class, but whatever your excuse is, wearing make up to the gym could be causing more damage than you realise...

But if the idea of giving yourself terrible skin isn’t off-putting enough and going barefaced isn’t an option what can you wear? Keep make up to an absolute bare minimum and use oil-free make up so your skin can at least breathe a little. An oil free tinted moisturiser would cut it but be sure to cleanse your skin as soon as possible after your session. As our skin cools, our pores tighten and you don’t want that to happen when they’re clogged full of make-up and grime. If we’ve failed to scare you out of wearing make-up with the thought of possible breakouts then perhaps we might try one last thing. Studies have shown that women who wear make-up to the gym work out less

Moral of the story: put more effort into your workout than you do your face.

effectively. The reason? For fear of working up a sweat and ruining their look... So if you’re hitting the gym with a specific goal in mind, perhaps to drop a dress size or tone up for a big holiday, you might want to consider going au naturel or be prepared to spend a lot more time in the gym than your bare-faced counterparts.

When we’re in the gym we get hot and next comes the sweating (nice...), followed swiftly by the relaxing and enlarging of the pores. Add a layer of even the best make up and you’ve got yourself a recipe for disaster. First there’s the streaky make up (not a good look) and worse the increasing likelihood that you’ll suffer a breakout as your pores become blocked and whilst you might not suffer with spots, you’ll most likely see an increase in blackheads and uneven skin texture.

A - Z Wardrobe Essentials... E is for Espadrilles... Brocade Espadrilles £255 Dolce & Gabbana

OK, it’s still bitterly cold outside but that doesn’t mean we can’t so much as dream of warm summer days and what we might wear on them! Espadrilles are the ultimate summer shoe. They go with absolutely everything, jeans, a summer dress, a caftan, shorts... you get the picture. Originally the shoe of peasants, Mediterranean fisherman and warriors, they have climbed the fashion ladder to become one of the most highly coveted summer styles season after season. After almost disappearing in the 60’s, when there seemed no longer to be a market for the humble woven Spanish shoe, Yves Saint Laurent saved the day after requesting that Isabel Castañer make a heeled version. Today, all serious high fashion brands have their own version. Adopt a flat patterned style for day, a satin pump for a low key evening event or a super high wedge for a high impact look and bless the day the ‘Espadrille’ was reborn...

WEDDINGS

Toasting Notes The speeches, like marmite you love them or hate them. Done well they can be endearing, charming, sentimental, witty and fun. Done badly and they can be awkward, painful, cringe inducing and boring. Whether it’s your awfully embarrassing Father you dread hearing from or a Best Man with a fondness for profanities there are a few tips and tricks to ensure you and your guests are quaffing and not coughing on your champagne come the toasts.

If you’re going traditional, hire a toastmaster to add a sense of ceremony as each speaker is announced. He or she will also help keep the schedule on target without you having to stress about it. Encourage your speech givers to learn the opening and closing lines of their speech. There is nothing duller than watching someone read word for word from a creased up piece of A4. Eye contact instantly lifts a speech and engages the listeners. Concerned that your guests might drop off during the speeches or worse still that the toasts will be drowned out by a chorus of tummy rumbles? Switch things up by alternating speeches between courses.

Another trick for keeping things short and sweet is by imposing a time limit of about 7 minutes max each, or 1000 words if they plan on writing it out. Whilst good champagne is an integral part of any speech, make sure anyone delivering a toast has not been hitting the bubbles beforehand. We want the speech to be memorable in a good way. It is traditional for each speech to end with a toast. Write down for the toast giver who exactly it is they are supposed to be toasting. The Father of the Bride: ‘the Bride and Groom’, The Groom: ‘The Bridesmaids’ and The Best Man: ‘Mr and Mrs (Newlyweds’ surname). 42

Finally serve up suitably wonderful champagne. At least if nothing else goes to plan, the guests might not notice due to the perfect nature of the contents of their glass. We love Krug’s Grande Cuvee Brut. As you taste it, notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar and jellied fruits may take you by surprise. You may even taste hints of apples, ripe and dried fruit, almonds, marzipan, gingerbread, sweet spices and even brioche and honey. You may also notice its exceptional freshness in the mouth, with rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit enhanced by the subtlety of its fine and elegant bubbles. It’s worth noting that Krug Grande Cuvée can age beautifully so pop a bottle or six on your gift list.

WEDDINGS

Ready, Steady, Wed The countdown is on to the wedding of the year (that’s yours by the way) so get ready and enjoy every stressful but ultimately worth it moment!

Perhaps the least romantic part of planning a wedding but by far one of the most important tasks is having ‘the money chat’. Talk with your fiancé, parents and in-laws-to-be and set a budget ASAP.

Invitations should be sent out at least 8 weeks before your big day to allow guest plenty of time to make arrangements! (If lots of your guests will need to travel, don’t forget to give information of local accommodation options and directions!)

As of 2nd March 2015, you need to give at least 29 days’ notice of your intention to marry, so make sure you read up on all the rules and make all the necessary legal arrangements in plenty of time!

Saturdays throughout spring and summer are the most popular dates so book your venue early to get your day of choice. If the venue is more important than the date then you can afford to be more flexible and look at an autumn or winter wedding.

DIY Diva – If you’re planning on adorning your day with crafty homemade pieces then give yourself plenty of time to practice and avoid any last minute DIY disasters.

Dress up – if you’re planning on having a madeto-measure or bespoke dress it can take up to 6 months to create so don’t leave it too late to start shopping!

Get pamper ed – ensure you are w edding-read y by arrangi ng a day of pampering in the run up to th e wedding. Remember to have a ru n through wit h your mak e up artist an d hair stylis t and don’t let the day before your weddin g be the firs t time you try a spray tan!

47

Strike a pose. Picking a photographer should be a priority. The best ones get booked up as early as a year in advance.

HOME & GARDEN

Featured Designer: Alain Marzat

Alain Marzat is a versatile creator. His multiple talents have earned him international recognition with his fashion creations as a designer, artistic director and trend scout. An important player in the denim revolution, he created or contributed to many brands from the end of the 1970’s such as: Liberto, Chevignon, Marithé et François Girbaud, G.Star... to name just a few. Today, since 2012, he has been developing his own projects in furniture creation, design and interior decoration. Fashion has contributed to his sense for aesthetics and exceptional pieces, a crossover of creation that urged him to go from designing fashion to designing furniture, another of his passions, that is at the heart of his occupation today. Architecture, design and interior decoration have always been complimentary to Alain Marzat's passion for fashion. The Bauhaus, 62

the Union des Artistes Modernes, the architects and interior designerdecorators of the 20th century have had a determining influence on the aesthetic inclinations of this selftaught designer. Having successfully carried out the interior design of several fashion boutiques, Alain Marzat’s desire to merge these artistic expressions became evident. The creative approach of Alain Marzat combines a total freedom in form with high quality of workmanship. Mastered luxury, sensual and refined materials combined with hybrid characteristics, always tinted with elegance and perspicuity are the basis of his approach. A reflection of his varied inspirations and the multiplicity of his disciplines, his creations bear the stamp of this richness while retaining the practical spirit inherited from his fashion experiences.

Alain Marzat works according to two principles: - Contemporary high-quality furniture and cabinets made in the tradition of famous designers and modernist architects of the 20th century. The pieces are custom-made for each client, aiming at creating pieces with a memory and an emotion, that have the potential to become classic pieces of furniture that will always remain beautiful in any interior. - Contemporary design furniture made using modern materials such as Plywood, Corian, Aluminium and Altuglas. Through these collections, Alain Marzat seeks to highlight the savoirfaire of skilled artisans, a respect for the hand-made creation of furniture using noble contemporary materials, whether a single piece or limitededition series, every piece is always made with the care of a quality job based on a mutual respect between the designer and client. Alain Marzat’s clientele consists of international design offices, taste-makers and distinguished private buyers. 63

Crab & Lobster HOTEL & RESTAURANT REVIEW

64

The Hotel: We arrived at the Crab Manor in the early evening, the sun had already set, meaning our first glimpse of the grand hotel was under the guise of moonlight and lamp light and as a result, our view of the grounds obscured. We would have to wait till morning to take in the spectacular gardens. We were warmly welcomed by Fernando, a cheery and polite young gentleman who escorted us first to reception, where we learnt we would be staying in the Taj Mahal suite located not in the main manor but within the grounds. We accepted the offer of a turn down service and arranged for a table at the Crab & Lobster restaurant at 7:30pm having been invited by Fernando to join him and the other guests for complimentary canapés in the manor before dinner. If you are unfamiliar with Crab Manor Hotel, we should begin by telling you that it is a world away from what you might expect to find in the North Yorkshire Dales. Imagine being invited on a tour

of the world’s most famous luxury hotels without ever having to step onto a single aeroplane or grapple with the tiniest bit of jet lag. From Bora Bora in the South Pacific to Mount Nelson in Cape town, Crab Manor takes you to the most exotic of destinations without a need for your passport, apart from your special Crab Manor Passport of course... Decorated with beautiful artefacts and antiques, each room in the adjoining 18th Century Georgian Manor, beautiful thatched lodges and Scandinavian log cabins offer unique accommodation in a picture perfect setting. Upon arriving at the Taj Mahal, one of the venue’s ‘Luxury Rooms’ located within 7 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, Fernando instructed us on how to use the private hot tub, found in the enclosed outside terrace. He then took us up a flight of external stairs and into our Indian

palace. After a tour of the suite, and a quick guide on how to use the rooms four-point mood lighting, Fernando left us with news of a parlour game played in the main manor before dinner. For those seeking a spot of adventure, we were invited to join the hunt for a hidden beer tap, which if found was ours to enjoy for the evening! My guest’s ears pricked up and I’ll share with you now, yes he did find it, but no, I won’t tell you where it is, I would hate to ruin your fun! Alone in our room we were free to have a good look around and take in the finer details of the accommodation. What became quite clear, very quickly, was that no shortcuts have been taken in the design and furnishing of the luxury rooms. Whilst it is often a fear that ‘themed’ rooms can be a little over the top and, occasionally tacky, that most certainly isn’t the case at Crab Manor. The Taj Mahal suite is regal and lavish in its décor but entirely effortless and authentic. Rich pink and red cushions and draped fabrics created a sumptuous and comfortable seating area, whilst the magnificent and heavy, double doors opening into the bathroom stood as a focal point in their own right. Never have I been more occupied with a bathroom door! The bathroom too was rich in features, a fantastic rain shower and stunning brass plated steel bath meant that we were spoilt for choice, so naturally we tried both! Each room also comes with Molton Brown toiletries, a detail that to some may not seem significant, but for me amplifies Crab Manor’s dedication to the finer details. The term luxury doesn’t apply simply to the sheets and décor but extends beyond to the selection of snacks on offer, the Smart TV and the complimentary umbrella available to use should the weather not be favourable. When we finally felt that we’d taken everything in and could go to sleep we were elated to find the bed so comfortable. Not that we needed them, we found extra pillows in the (very beautifully engraved) wardrobe and a lovely little upholstered step to help you on your way up to the bed – the Taj Mahal room features an elegant and raised four poster. We slept wonderfully and were quite disappointed to find morning came around so quickly. Breakfast was served in the pavilion of the Crab and Lobster restaurant, we both indulged in the Full English before taking a pleasant stroll back through the grounds that looked fine and beautiful despite the grey and misty start to the day. Checking out was somewhat bittersweet, we knew we would miss the lavish luxury of the manor but we checked out safe in the knowledge that we’d be back... we’ve got our sights set on Italy next. CRAB & LOBSTER HOTEL & RESTAURANT REVIEW

66

The Restaurant: Award winning, generous, unpretentious and prepared to perfection. That’s what the Crab & Lobster website says of its dining experience and I don’t think I could put it better myself, but I’ll try; otherwise this could be quite a short review. Along with a visit to the Crab Manor Hotel, we were invited to sample the culinary delights of the highly acclaimed Crab & Lobster restaurant, which is considered a must dine experience for anyone serious about food. Excitedly, my partner and I perused the menu before visiting, it made no difference though, we were still painfully slow at deciding on what to eat, perhaps a bit of everything? Finally we settled on starters of Pressed Terrine of Venison, Rabbit, Duck & Ham Knuckle, Warm Sage Brioche, Spiced Pear, Redcurrant & Apricot Chutney and for my dinner guest, Crispy Fishcakes of Local Codling, Haddock & Oak Roast Salmon, Winter Greens, Poached Egg. As we waited we enjoyed a selection of artisan breads, including a rich, fruity bread that perhaps I should have eaten less of considering I had yet to even begin the first of my three courses. The dining room gradually filled until it seemed there were only a couple of tables left, it’s true that you

really must book before arriving as demand for a table is high. Our starters arrived and we were both pleased with the generous portions. It is often a fear that restaurants renowned for serving exquisite food tend to adopt the practice of less is more, but not the Crab, remember, they’re unpretentious. I did share my delicious terrine with my partner, as he had spotted it first but graciously let me order it, it was flavoursome and rich and worked perfectly with the sweet and crunchy chutney and toasted brioche. He too enjoyed his fishcakes, that he noted were full of flavour, had good texture and the poached egg was cooked perfectly. The bar had been set high and we excitedly looked forward to the main event. If you’ve yet to visit the Crab, you might have already heard about its unique décor. It is quirky in design with a collection of artefacts hanging from almost every conceivable place. Netting covers the ceiling, which is also home to a collection of instruments. Marionettes hang from lamps and copious empty bottles of champagne adorn every spare surface. You get the distinct impression you’ve stumbled into a cave of treasures, with each item no doubt having a fantastic story.

For the main course, my partner selected the Seafood Pie, a melody of fish, scallops, prawns & mussels, white wine cream sauce, served with cheesy crastor kipper mash, and nutmeg & buttered greens. I happen to know it was excellent because he said very little from the moment it was set down in front of him; he delighted at how full of fish it actually was. Quite often a fish pie can seem full of promise but in fact it is full of potato. Not on this occasion. The buttered greens were the perfect accompaniment and the added hint of nutmeg is a fine example of how the Crab & Lobster have earned their reputation for serving superior food. I chose the Roasted Garlic Buttered Lobster, served with Queenie scallops, king prawns, green salad, chips and a herb mayonnaise. Once again, the portions were generous and the presentation was considered, I do commend chefs who have a flair of artistry but I like to feel comfortable eating my dinner and less guilty that I’m ruining a masterpiece. The plate was visually pleasing, full of colour, inviting me to tuck in! The lobster was meaty and perfectly cooked, the scallops and prawns were packed into the lobster shell and paired wonderfully with the rich creamy, buttery garlic sauce. We couldn’t have been more impressed with our choices and took our time over the main, enjoying each mouthful, savouring it. It also seemed the consensus among the other diners was positive; we overheard several others comment on the generous portions and the delightful flavours. We asked for a little time before choosing desserts. We sat back and enjoyed the bottle of red wine we had selected to accompany the evening and soaked up the relaxed atmosphere. When we felt ready to, we finished the night with baked rum & raisin cheesecake, served with a coffee biscuit crunch and tiramisu ice cream and a trio of Brulee’s, including flavours of apricot, wild strawberry and dolce de leche and a trio of Aimee's biscuits. Just so you’re aware, I’m running out of ways in which to say, it’s was great. My particular highlight of the dessert course was the dolce de leche flavoured brulee which, had it been any bigger, I would have felt very guilty about having! Rich, creamy and smooth it was just how like my dessert. The cheesecake went down a treat too, my partner insisted he was full but managed to finish it…what a trooper. All in all we had a delicious evening, the setting was delightful, the atmosphere relaxed and romantic and the service exceptional. We were hosted by Audrey who was a delight and made us feel entirely welcome all evening. I can’t possibly recommend the Crab & Lobster any more highly and will wish you a wonderful evening, because no doubt, if you have any sense, you’ll book straight away.

Hashtag Healthy Whether you’ve promised to eat more healthily this year, learn to cook or be more adventurous when it comes to treating your taste buds, this delicious and healthy recipe from superfood blogger, Deliciously Ella, will help you stay on track with your goals! About Ella: Ella founded her blog in 2012 following her diagnosis of a relatively rare illness, Postural Tachycardia Syndrome, in 2011. The illness, which left Ella with chronic pain, stomach issues, headaches and extreme fatigue, showed no signs of relenting and so Ella decided to research holistic therapies and healing processes in the hope of alleviating some of her symptoms. After making some drastic changes to her diet and lots of failed experiments, Ella has become an incredible (selftaught) cook, using raw and natural ingredients to create healthy, nutritious and delicious recipes. The most amazing part is after just 18 months of living her new lifestyle, she has been able to come off her medication completely and is feeling better than ever.

Rejuvenating Bowl Ella says: “If you’re feeling a little tired, unhealthy and bloated after Christmas then this bowl is exactly what you need! It’s incredibly nourishing, comforting and delicious but it at the same time it doesn’t seem overly healthy so it won’t feel like a total shock after a little indulgence over Christmas!”

How to make it

Ingredients - Serves 2

While the rice cooks peel the sweet potato and cut it into chunks, place these in a steamer and allow it to steam for about thirty minutes – until it’s really soft and easy to mash with a fork. Place the steamed sweet potato in a bowl and mash it with 2 cloves of crushed garlic, 1 tablespoon of tahini, the juice of half a lemon and a little salt.

2/3 of a cup of short grain brown rice (180g) with 800ml of boiling water 2 sweet potatoes (600g) 1 tin of black beans (400g) 1 bag of spinach (200g) 3 cloves of garlic 2 tablespoons of olive oil 1 lemon 1 tablespoon of tahini 1 teaspoon of tamari For the dressing 2 tablespoons of tahini 3 tablespoons of olive oil 1 tablespoon of water

Start by cooking the rice, simply place the rice in a sauce pan with the boiling water a pinch of salt. Let this cook on a low heat for about fifty minutes, until all the water has been absorbed and the rice has the perfect texture. Once the rice has cooked stir the juice of half a lemon into it.

When the rice and sweet potato are almost ready place the drained/ rinsed beans, spinach, tamari and the final crushed clove of garlic into a pan and sauté them for a couple of minutes until the spinach has wilted and the beans are hot Finally mix the dressing together in a mug, then place everything in a bowl and pour the dressing over it.

Marinated Kale Salad Ella says: “I know that raw kale may sound terrible, but trust me it can be really amazing. I’ve been teaching this salad a lot in my cooking classes and despite a lot of scepticism to begin with, everyone absolutely adores the end result.”

Ingredients - Serves 1 Four big handfuls of kale 1/3 of a cup of pomegranate seeds 1 ripe avocado A handful of pumpkin seeds For the dressing 1 tablespoon of olive oil 1 teaspoon of teaspoon of tahini 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or 1 lime 1 teaspoon of tamari 1 lime How to make it Start by washing the kale, then tear small pieces off the stems, discarding the stems and placing the leaves into a bowl. Drizzle all the dressing ingredients onto the kale. Then use your hands to firmly start massaging it all into the leaves, as you do this you’ll feel the leaves soften and wilt. Keep massaging them for a few minutes to make sure they’ll really soft, at this point stir in the pomegranates and avocado cubes.

MUSIC Who: Meghan Trainor What: Title The debut EP from online sensation Meghan Trainor, 2014’s Title, is a four-song release featuring the hit “All About That Bass.” A jazzy, exuberant anthem for body-positivity, “All About That Bass” garnered over 1,600,000 views on YouTube in the first month of its release. The track helped buoy Trainor’s burgeoning career and call attention to her soulful, highly resonant vocal chops. A graduate of The Berklee School of Music, Trainor has a bent toward catchy, ‘50s doo wop-inspired songs that straddle the line between modern R&B and melodic pop. Also included on Title is the similarly infectious “Dear Future Husband” and the ballad “Close Your Eyes.”

Who: Mark Ronson

Who: Bob Dylan

What: Uptown Special

What: Shadows In The Night

Uptown Special is GRAMMY Award winning Ronson’s most inventive and vibrant work to date. Taken as a whole, the album is inspired by his musical beginnings. As a teenager growing up in New York City in the early 90s, Ronson gravitated towards hip-hop, funk, soul and R&B. Those were the records he lugged around in boxes in the early days of his club DJ career and that scratchy, inspiring vinyl was what he returned to when creating the album.

Bob Dylan’s new studio album, Shadows In The Night, due for release on 3rd February, 2015 will feature ten tracks. The Jack Frost-produced album is the 36th studio set from Bob Dylan and marks the first new music from the artist since 2012’s worldwide hit Tempest. Upon Columbia’s announcement of the album’s forthcoming release, Bob Dylan commented, “It was a real privilege to make this album. I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time but was never brave enough to approach 30-piece complicated arrangements and refine them down for a 5-piece band. That’s the key to all these performances. We knew these songs extremely well. It was all done live. Maybe one or two takes. No overdubbing. No vocal booths. No headphones… I don’t see myself as covering these songs in any way. They’ve been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What my band and I are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day.”

“No matter how my taste in music and DJ-ing veers over the years, I always find myself coming back to that music I would play out in hip-hop clubs in NY in the late 90s/early 2000s”, Ronson elaborates.

Birdman

Wild

Release Date: 1st January 2015

Release date: 16th January 2015

Michael Keaton plays a washed-up superhero actor in this breathtakingly original showbiz satire. Not so long ago, Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) was flying high as the star of the Birdman superhero movie trilogy. But now he’s desperate to gain some credibility with a make-or-break stage adaptation of a Raymond Carver short story. It’s produced by his long-suffering friend Jake (Zach Galifianakis). Among the cast are his girlfriend Laura (Andrea Riseborough), film star Lesley (Naomi Watts) and insufferably egotistical method actor Mike Shiner (Edward Norton). To add to Riggan’s woes, he’s hired his embittered, recovering addict daughter Sam (Emma Stone) as an assistant. As things go from bad to worse, he’s even mocked by Birdman himself! Former Batman star Michael Keaton gives a vanity-free, selfreferential performance in ‘Babel’ and ‘Biutiful’ director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s pitch black comedy of desperation. Brilliant cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki makes it appear as though the film is one continuous shot.

Reese Witherspoon stars in a powerful and moving true-life wilderness adventure scripted by Nick Hornby. Following a personal tragedy, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) slips into a cycle of self-destructive behaviour. Her ex-husband Paul (Thomas Sadowski) and best friend Aimee (Gaby Hoffmann) are powerless to help her. But then Cheryl makes the decision to embark upon an extraordinary, life-changing journey. She takes an eventful solo hike along the epic 1,100 mile Pacific West Trail, which runs all the way up the western spine of the United States. Nick Hornby follows his Oscarnominated screenplay for ‘An Education’ with this adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s bestselling memoir. Reese Witherspoon is a revelation as Cheryl, in her meatiest role since ‘Walk the Line’. She’s ably supported by Laura Dern, who gives a heartbreaking performance as Cheryl’s mother, Bobbi. The director is versatile Jean-Marc Vallee, whose previous film, the much-acclaimed ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, won three Oscars.

The Buried Giant By Kazuo Ishiguro This is an extraordinary new novel from the author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize winning The Remains of the Day. 'You've long set your heart against it, Axl, I know. But it's time now to think on it anew. There's a journey we must go on, and no more delay...' The Buried Giant begins as a couple set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen in years. Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge and war.

Girl in a Band

Journey of a Dress

By Kim Gordon

By Diane Von Furstenberg

There are few artists who inspire such reverence as Kim Gordon. In Girl in a Band she tells with complete openness the story of her family, her work in the visual arts, her move to New York City, the men in her life, her marriage, her relationship with her daughter, her music and her band. It is a rich and beautifully written memoir, taking us back to the lost New York of the 1980s and '90s that gave birth to and nurtured Sonic Youth and the alternative revolution in popular music they spearheaded. But at its core, Girl in a Band is an examination of what partnership means - and what happens when it dissolves.

In 2014, DVF celebrated the 40th anniversary of the wrap with a retrospective exhibition, Journey of a Dress, in Los Angeles. In galleries wrapped in print and colour, visitors were immersed in the world of DVF. Now, Journey of a Dress has been immortalized in this striking book that lets the reader fully experience the exhibition through its three parts: the timeline, the wrap army and the art salon. The definitive history of the little dress that started it all, Journey of a Dress is a private tour, a lookbook, an art book and a history lesson, all captured in one beautiful, full-colourful volume.

On an autumn day in 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman knocks at the door of a grand house in the wealthiest quarter of Amsterdam. Office Romance

351010

INDUSTRY, EDUCATION,ENGINEERING & COMMERCIAL

In the wake of the festive party season and in the run up to Valentines Day, perhaps you’re looking at a colleague, employer or employee in a different light. Office camaraderie can often overflow and turn into romance but tread carefully. Real life isn’t like the films, neither of you are Sandra Bullock or Ryan Gosling and this isn’t ‘The Proposal’...

Working Hard?

It’s sensible to let your head rule your heart in a situation like this. Let common sense guide you and consider the potential conflicts of interest and implications embarking on an office relationship could have. Your employer might have a policy in place that does not permit such things and you wouldn’t want others thinking your involvement with a colleague or employer is clouding your judgement.

Let the power of advertising work for you in MODE, reaching a quality audience throughout Yorkshire

A relationship between a boss and a subordinate can prove particularly problematic, if it is early days and you’re unsure of the staying power of the relationship then it would be best to keep it between yourselves and to behave discreetly.

Call us today on 0333 700 567 to find out how you MODE can help your business gain exposure

If you are an established couple you need to decide whether or not 83

to share your relationship with the rest of the office. It would be better that the news was shared by you rather than spreading via the office grapevine. Always remain professional. Displays of intimacy in front of your colleagues could undermine your professionalism and cause discomfort to others. You will garner more respect if you are able to show restraint. Be realistic. Under the right circumstances and with careful handling, true romance can blossom in the workplace, but should it begin to impact your ability to work, or should your work begin to adversely affect your relationship then you both need to assess your priorities and act decisively.

OFFICE LIFE

MODE Meets:

Helen Ambrosen This month we spoke with LUSH Co-Founder and inventor, Helen Ambrosen, to find out more about the woman behind the much loved global ethical cosmetics company.

84

As an inventor you must always be thinking of exciting new ways you can use different ingredients. What are your favourite ingredients to work with? I really love all the beautiful ingredients that come from our SLush Fund (Sustainable Lush Fund). I’m really proud of using fresh aloe in our New Charity Pot hand and body lotion; this is a great example of using a new ingredient. It’s amazing being able to support women’s aloe groups in Laikipia, Kenya and being able to use these beautiful ingredients that come from the SLush Fund. All of these ingredients are very inspiring and my favourite to work with.

Are there any cosmetic products/ inventions that you wish you had come up with first? No, I’m really proud of what I’ve invented because we try very hard to give the customer what they need. For example they never knew they needed Toothy Tabs, our solid form of toothpaste. We are always trying to reduce packaging problems and this is a great example of how we have done this. We try to give the customers what they need and not necessarily what they want.

Can you describe your career path? How did you get to where you are now? When I left college at 18 I was a funny mixture of art and science and had jobs based around horticulture and chemistry. I’ve been at Lush for 32 years and that is how I got to where I am now. It also involved lots of hard work and determination.

Did you always want to work as inventor for cosmetics? I didn’t really know there was such a role. I first came to work with the company because of my Ultrabland cleanser. I then got into inventing products with Mark (Mark Constantine OBE, Lush Co-Founder and Managing Director). My mum was a hairdresser and father was radiographer and he was very inventive and she was really into haircare, I’m a combination of the two.

Can you describe an average day in the life of Helen Ambrosen?

Do you have a mentor or someone who inspired you?

It usually starts off with yoga for half an hour then I get into work and make tea for Mark whilst he is cleaning his desk. We always need a cup of tea before we get to work. A lot of what I do is taking time to develop products and going through the set process of writing formulas and overseeing samples being made up. When I get the time I try and make my own samples to try. This is an example of a simple day but it really varies depending on what’s going on at the time.

Stan Krysztal is a big inspiration to me and I also saw him as a mentor. (Stan Krysztal was a respected cosmetic chemist, renowned for his work on several iconic brands including Mary Quant, Nivea, No 17 and a myriad of others. When he joined the Lush team he was already in his late seventies, and was generous in sharing his knowledge and expertise. His legacy lives on in Lush).

What are you most excited for in 2015?

...seeing an idea come together and making it happen. This is a great feeling. There is always more to learn. What is the most rewarding aspect of what you do? I have to say, seeing an idea come together and making it happen. This is a great feeling. There is always more to learn.

Opening our store on Oxford Street in London, we are currently going through all our product categories and bringing out lots of lovely new innovative ideas ready for the launch. It’s going to be stunning I’m sure. This is going to be our biggest store and give us space to show our customers exactly what we do.

Can you describe LUSH in three words? Lush Life – It is like a lifestyle and a way of life Inclusive – Anyone can be part of it Innovative – We are always working on our own inventions, even our famous bath ballistics.

What advice would you give somebody interested in working in the cosmetics industry? I would say be prepared to do anything. A lot of people think cosmetic industry is just science. I’m very involved in manufacturing, retail and training, so it’s not just about being a cosmetic scientist. There are lots of different aspects; it is a very satisfying career. I would certainly advise you to work for a brand that matches your own ethics and aspirations.

The Volvo V60 Polestar The new Volvo V60 Polestar is here but with limited availability so you’ll have to be quick if you want one.

I only had this car for a short time due to the limited number being released. This particular model was on a whirlwind tour around the UK. The weather was absolutely atrocious with very poor visibility and badly flooded roads. Ideal conditions then for the Volvo on steroids. From the second you hop in and set off down the road, it’s evident that racing expertise has gone in to drastically beefing this car up but inside the cabin it is still luxurious and refined. All-year performance; The car is based on the latest generation Volvo S/V60 and marks the start of an extended Polestar production model range. Development of the car has been on-going over the past years, picking up from the C30 and S60 Concept cars and the Australian S60 Polestar. Thousands of development kilometres have been driven on twisty mountain roads, on the Autobahn and test tracks from the south of Europe to the frozen north of Sweden. “We have continued our work to create a true driver’s car which is not limited only to a few specific driving conditions, but enjoyable on everything from your favourite winding roads to taking the family for a long journey, no matter summer or winter. And in my view, we have gotten very close to our goals, something that of course is best experienced first-hand behind the wheel,” said Robert Dahlgren, Polestar racing and test driver. 90

Polestar performance engineering Chassis: Upgrades include modifications made to increase rigidity of the chassis to cater for the 80% stiffer springs relative to the standard S60 R-Design. These changes combined with the tailored high performance Öhlins shock absorbers and 20” Polestar wheels results in a precise, yet comfortable, driving experience.

Engine: The six-cylinder turbo-charged T6 engine has undergone extensive development with a new twin-scroll turbo and intercooler to produce 350 HP/257 kW at 5700 rpm and 500 Nm/369 lb-ft already at 2800 rpm. The engine breathes through a 2.5” stainless steel exhaust system, making for a throaty engine note.

Brakes: The brake system has undergone substantial modifications. Most visible are the 371 millimetre ventilated front discs and six-piston Brembo callipers, guaranteeing a high level of braking performance.

Transmission: The six-speed automatic gearbox features a new paddle shift system that together with the Polestar-developed Haldex four-wheel drive system takes the car from 0-62 mph in just 5 seconds and to a limited top speed of 155 mph. The gearbox as well as the four-wheel drive system and traction control system has been recalibrated in order to provide an active driving experience and maximum grip in all situations.

Aerodynamics: To reflect the increased performance of the S60 and V60 Polestar, positive aerodynamic effects have been achieved through subtle, yet efficient, modifications based on data from tests in the Volvo Cars wind tunnel. The changes are visible with the front splitters, optimising the airflow underneath the car, as well as a new rear spoiler and diffuser, increasing downforce.

Interior: The interior has been reworked with new details, materials and Polestar colours, such as the steering wheel, seats and more, with the sole purpose of increasing driver support and control.

Polestar has certainly done a great job here The Polestar Technical Bit Chassis: Polestar Öhlins shock absorber system, Polestar bespoke rims, 8x20” ET53 with 245/35R20 tyres. Engine: 6-cylinder inline T6 engine, 2953 cc 350 hp @ 5700 rpm 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) @ 2800-4750 rpm Max 6500 rpm New twin-scroll Borg Warner turbo New intercooler Polestar 2.5” stainless full-flow exhaust system with twin 3.5” tail pipes

Transmission AWF21 automatic gearbox with paddle shift system Polestar transmission calibration for faster gearshifts, launch control and curve-hold functionality Polestar Haldex calibration for more rear torque dynamic distribution Polestar calibrated stability control system Brakes Front: Polestar/Brembo 6 piston brake callipers 371x32 mm ventilated and floating Brembo discs Rear: 302x22 mm ventilated disc

Verdict: Volvo on steroids. A really good practical family car with racing track performance thrown in for that excitement factor when needed. Rating: Road Tested by: Adam McCartney With thanks to: Mill Garages Harrogate, 01423 798600 www.volvocarsharrogate.co.uk

THE ACUR A NSX

PRECISION CRAFTED

PERFORMANCE

Acura (Nissan in the UK) takes the wraps off its highly anticipated next-generation NSX supercar, designed to deliver a ground-breaking “New Sports eXperience” Twenty-five years after the debut of the original, paradigm-shifting NSX supercar, Acura has revealed the production version of its highly anticipated successor - the next-generation Acura NSX, developed and produced in the U.S. The production model, in a scintillating NSX Red finish, took the stage of North American International Auto Show with a growl from its twin-turbocharged engine. Specifically created to bring a “new sports experience” to the supercar segment, the NSX challenges conventional beliefs about supercars — much as the first generation did a quarter of a century ago. The approach is realized through an all-new power unit—a twin-turbocharged 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and three-electric motor Sport Hybrid system—integrated with an ultra-rigid and lightweight multi-material body with world’s-first material applications and manufacturing processes. Developed under the concept of a “human-centered supercar,” a car that puts the driver first in every aspect of its design, the next-generation NSX will leverage its state-of-theart hybrid supercar power unit, body and chassis to deliver exceptionally intuitive and immediate response to driver inputs. “Our commitment was to create an all-new NSX that is true to the heritage of NSX- a supercar that

The soul of a car is the emotional connection it makes with the driver. With the NSX, that connection will be intense and immediate.

delivers a new driving experience, one where every part of the vehicle is respectful of the smartest part of the car, the driver,” said Mike Accavitti, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the Acura division. 93

At the heart of the NSX’s performance capabilities is an all-new mid-mounted, 75-degree, DOHC V6 engine with twin turbochargers mated to an Acura-developed 9-speed DCT. The V6 engine employs a race-inspired compact valve train and dry sump lubrication system to help lower the centre of gravity. The all-new 9-speed DCT delivers synapse-quick gear changes and rev-matching downshifts. The rear direct-drive electric motor, housed between the engine and transmission, supports acceleration, braking and transmission shifting performance. The NSX’s front wheels are driven by twin independent highoutput electric motors which deliver instantaneous torque response and dynamic left-to-right torque distribution. The NSX uses its front electric motors for dynamic torque vectoring in addition to enhancing acceleration and braking performance. The result is an instantaneous “zero delay” launch performance and handling response that seems to anticipate the driver’s desire. The NSX has undergone extensive testing at some of the world’s most challenging race circuits, including the famed Nurburgring. The NSX will be badged and sold as a Honda in Europe.

Having driven so many cars over the years it’s always exciting to try something new for a MODE Road test. I had never driven a Maserati up until now so I was really looking forward to this one. Especially as the Ghibli is such an important car for Maserati. Up until now Maserati, over their 100 year history, has been a niche Italian sports car brand but with the Ghibli they are making this brand appealing and affordable to a whole new market. This car is going to more than double Maserati’s sales by the end of this year. During the development of the Ghibli, one of the main aims of its designers and engineers was to recreate the dynamism and excitement of past Maserati classics. This they have achieved in style with the launch of three models. The potent 410 HP Ghibli S, the versatile 330 HP Ghibli and the 275 HP Ghibli Diesel, Maserati’s first ever diesel engined car. Yes a diesel Maserati!

Every Maserati is like a work of art expressing the marque’s proud history. Maserati means passion, dedication and the eternal quest for perfection. It is also a key part of Italy’s long and illustrious automotive tradition. The joys of driving a high performance, prestige saloon are no longer just for special occasions. The Ghibli is a unique combination of style, performance, sports handling and comfort that is designed to make inspirational motoring an everyday experience. Sporty V6 engines, advanced technology and beautifully crafted, high quality interiors make the Ghibli stand head and shoulders above its rivals in the segment. In the middle of the dashboard, the large 8.4” display of the Maserati Touch Control is the access portal for the very latest in-car entertainment system, and provides user-friendly control for most of the on-board devices.

The Maserati Ghibli’s Twin Turbo V6 has been designed to achieve the lowest possible fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, whilst at the same time delivering extremely sporty performance. Thanks to innovations in engine technology that have been specially developed by Maserati, Ghibli drivers can relax in the knowledge that whilst enjoying smooth and economical driving, they also have instant access to immense amounts of power. much in keeping with Maserati traditions. Its sporty nature and 275 HP (202 kW)* enables it to surge from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph. The economy and emissions figures speak volumes about the efficiency of this world class diesel: 47.8 mpg For those seeking concert-hall acoustics in their Maserati Ghibli, the answer is the new-generation Premium Surround System, created in association with expert sound specialists, Bowers & Wilkins. This optional hi-fi system reproduces every subtle note to perfection, with unparalleled dynamic purity: amazing sounds for this amazing car.

What Others Say: We also asked one of our friends who owns a Maserati to let us know what Maserati means to him: “I have always loved the look of the Maserati, and had longed to own one for myself for many a year, the attraction is not only the aesthetic but everything about the brand, the marque is iconic, from the shape to the Ferrari engineering. Then there is the sound, oh the sound is so amazing, when in sports MODE the MC shift Gran Turismo is like a pride of lions calling to each other all at once in the wild, you are guaranteed to turn heads when driving this remarkable vehicle. “I have had the Grand Turismo now for 20 months and whilst I have had other sports cars for years, this is in a class of its own. I get a great feeling of fulfilment when behind the wheel that no other car has delivered.

“The power is of course what makes it a supercar, but you can get power from many other Marques, the Maserati is not only still relatively rare day to day but it oozes finesse that has been developed over its 100 year history, for me it is the ultimate drive. “Along with some members of the SCD club (www.supercar-driver. com) I am taking a week out in June to drive across Europe, through the Dolomite mountains and open her up on the autobahns of Germany as well as taking in some of the most exciting routes Europe has to offer. “This will be a dream materialised, if you are you are considering buying a Maserati, go test drive one and I can assure you, you will not be disappointed”. Kevin Kerley Chairman Of The Academy For Chief Executives

Our Verdict: I really like the Ghibli a lot. It just makes you feel special. Even for a diesel when you press the Sports Mode button it sounds awesome and gives all the performance you ask for. The rear is a little twitchy because of all the available torque. When you are normal driving mode it floats along the road and accelerates incredible smoothly. The fuel economy figures are truly astounding. I love it!
