TECH

The Dyson Humidifier Dyson has announced its first humidifier with ultraviolet cleansing, which the company claims kills off 99.9 percent of bacteria, making for a healthier, more comfortable night’s sleep. Dry household air isn’t good for your body. It can give you chapped lips, nosebleeds and dry skin, as well as exacerbating snoring and leaving you more vulnerable to colds and flu. The Dyson humidifier uses three separate technologies -- ultrasonic to humidify the air, ultraviolet to kill bacteria and Dyson’s Air Multiplier technology, which distributes the humidified air evenly throughout the room. The key element that sets Dyson’s product apart from other humidifiers out there is that it

Accurate climate control

actually treats the water that it uses to humidify the room, killing off the bacteria before it can enter the environment.

No over-humidification. The Dyson humidifier measures temperature and humidity and adjusts accordingly to project a hygienic mist for a comfortable environment.

Ultraviolet Cleanse technology

It’s acoustically engineered for a night of quiet, hygienic humidification.

Before releasing any mist, Ultraviolet Cleanse technology uses a threeminute cycle to kill 99.9% of bacteria in the tank of water. Every drop of water is exposed to an ultraviolet light and then atomised by a piezo. This ensures that any mist projected is always 99.9% bacteria-free.

The accurate humidistat and efficient water management system ensure up to 18 hours of continuous use on one tank of water. And there’s a built-in sleep timer for automatic turn off. 10

Dual function for year round use The only one to deliver hygienic, even humidification in winter and high-velocity air to cool you in summer. There is no pricing information just yet, but the Dyson humidifier will be available in the UK in March 2015, exclusively through John Lewis. dyson.co.uk

HEALTH & FITNESS

You. Minus all the trimmings... Crash diets are never a good idea. They are often unhealthy and can lead to you actually putting on more weight in the long run. If you’re hoping to shape up ready for the festive season then now is the time to start making adjustments to your lifestyle and habits rather than fasting for a week before you try and

squeeze into your party outfit! We asked Andrew Landells, our resident health expert, for a few tips on toning up and trimming down ahead of Christmas!

Instead of restrictive diets, get active and use exercise to help you achieve your perfect party body. Completing a 20 minute full body workout will not only help you tone up but it will help you improve your fitness so you’ll have no trouble lasting all night on the dancefloor! The only equipment you will need is a step, so no excuses!

Ladders: Increase your heart rate with this cardio move. Jogging on the spot, lift each knee as high as you can while raising the opposite arm in the air. Continue alternating for 2 minutes.

Push Ups: This one will help tone your chest and arms. Place your hands flat on the floor, at shoulder level and shoulder width apart. With your legs stretched out behind you, the balls of your feet should be touching the floor. Lift yourself up using your arms until you are in plank position, then lower. Again do 2 sets of 8-12 repetitions. Tip: You can make this exercise easier by leaving your knees in contact with the ground.

Step Ups: Another cardio move to increase your heart rate. Stand in front of a step and put your first foot onto it followed by your second foot. When both feet are on the step move down your first foot and lift it back up again. Repeat, alternating the foot you step down with so you exercise both legs. Continue for 2 minutes.

Tricep Dips: Bodyweight Squat: This fantastic exercise helps tone your abs, bum, calves and thighs. Begin standing with your feet slightly wider than hip-width and your toes turned out slightly. Squat down as low as you can (but don’t let your knees go over your toes), hold and come back up. Do 2 sets of 8-12 repetitions. Don’t forget to keep your spine straight by engaging your core!

Great for toning your arms, this exercise focuses on the tricep, the muscle at the back of the arm. Place the palm of your hands on the front of a chair with your fingers pointing forward. Then lift your body and straighten your legs so you rest on your heels with a straight body. From here, lower your body by bending your arms; remember to keep your elbows tucked in. Then push up to a straight line again and repeat. Do 2 sets of 8-12 repetitions. Tip: You can make this exercise easier by having your feet closer to you, with your legs slightly bent. 12

Classic Plank: This is one of the best moves for core strength and those coveted flat abs! Begin in a raised push up position and lower yourself onto your forearms. Your body should form a straight line, no bums in the air! Engage your abs and squeeze your glutes and hold for 40-60 seconds. Do this twice.

My Top Apps

Lunges Lunges are great for your thighs, bum and abs, so perfect if you want to show your legs off. Keep your upper body straight, with your shoulders back and relaxed and chin up (pick a point to stare at in front of you so you don't keep looking down). Always engage your core. Step forward with one leg, lowering your hips until both knees are bent at about a 90-degree angle. Then step back, before repeating the movement on the opposite leg. Do 2 sets of 8-12 repetitions.

Here are my top apps, suitable for iOS and Android, for a happy & healthy lifestyle! (P.S. I am hopeless with technology, so I promise if I can work these, you can!) Strava Run – free, premium £3.99 monthly, £39.99 annually If your greatest running motivation is challenging and beating your friends, then Strava is the app for you. Not only does it boast the standard functionality of GPS tracking for distance, time and pace, it also allows you to compete against other users' times and even map your own routes. Simply find a route and compete with other Strava users over the distance to reach the top of the leader board.

30 Day Fitness Challenge - £1.99

Crunches

For those of you who absolutely do not want to join the gym obsessives crew down at your local health & fitness centre, this app is for you. It's a fully fledged workout program for your arms, core and legs. Inside each section are 20 challenges, each one tailored by an expert and lasting, you guessed it, 30 days. The app handily reminds you when you need to exercise and with challenges lasting 1-5 mins the old 'I don't have time excuse' won't fly.

If its washboard abs you’re after, then you’ll want to include these. They’re a lot like sit-ups, except that instead of lifting your entire back off the floor, you only lift your upper back. Lie on your back on the floor and bend your knees, with your feet flat on the floor. Cross your arms in front of your chest and lift your shoulders towards the ceiling using your abdominal muscles and pause at the peak. When your shoulders are off the ground, pause and hold that position for a full second (or more), ease back down using your abdominal muscles. Do 2 sets of 20 repetitions. Tip: To make this exercise more difficult lift your feet and keep them suspended in the air during your crunches for a little extra crunch.

Star Jumps Another great cardio exercise, working the heart and lungs. Start by standing with your feet together and arms at your side. Slightly bend your knees, and propel yourself a few inches into the air. While in air, bring your legs out to the side about shoulder width or slightly wider. As you are moving your legs outward, you should raise your arms up over your head; arms should be slightly bent throughout the entire in-air movement. Your feet should land shoulder width or wider as your hands meet above your head with arms slightly bent. Continue for 1- 2 minutes.

My Fitness Pal – free This is a personal favourite of mine for tracking calories without having to do the number crunching yourself. With a database of over 4 million foods, you can easily record the number of calories eaten using the handy barcode scanner or by searching the database. You can also set goals and input exercise activity to accurately record calories not only consumed but also burnt! Written by Andrew Randells @RewRunner 13

LOOK 1: SHINE ON If there were ever a time to embrace the metallics trend, that time is now. Make sure you’re shining for all the right reasons and in all the right places this party season. The smoky eye is a party ‘go to’ look. But this festive season give it a twist and choose metallic shades. Think copper, gold, metallic black and silver for a bang on trend beauty look. For a really bold look, take inspiration from the Rodarte AW144 catwalk show and go for an over-the-top 70’s eye with a matching lip. Or iff you want something subtle, a touch h of shimmer in the inner corner of your eye and flecks of glitter will ll have you shining all night. Don’t stop at your eyes. Metallics is a trend that will work top to toe, and right to the tips of your pretty little fingers. Give your nails a metallic makeover with a glitter top coat. We love Essie’s Luxe Effects range!

LOOK 2: DOLL LIKE LASHES Full on fluttering lashes are big this AW. It’s all about the eyes with this look and the longer those lashes, the better. Keep makeup simple and let your lashes do the talking, this look works perfectly with porcelain skin and nude lips.

LOOK 3: IN THE PINK As an antidote to AW14’s bright hues and metallics go for subtle suit all, tonal shadows in pinks, taupes and tans. This trend is all about luminous skin, swept back ballerina buns and flushed pink cheeks.

For a 60’s look, brush your brows up and turn up the volume with a set of falsies! Try individual false lashes for a more natural and day time appropriate look. If you’re not a fan of faux lashes; layer on your mascara for a totally 90’s inspired look.

For the illusion of an effortless finish, try a brown mascara, it will give definition without making it look like you’re wearing any. Go for a strong brow, defined eyes and the prettiest of pink lips for a feminine and classic look.

HAIR & BEAUTY

Love you this winter

Whilst the thought of Christmas round the corner and your new winter coat may fill you with glee, we guarantee there are a few things the chilly season brings that you’re not so keen on. Biting winds, steamy showers, dipping temps, and drying indoor heat—can suck the life right out of your skin and hair. But follow our guide and we promise you’ll get that glow back in no time! Cold Weather Curse: Dull Complexion

Cold Weather Curse: Lacklustre Hair

Cold Weather Cure: Cracked Skin

Dehydrated skin cells turn over more slowly, causing a build-up of dead skin, which hinders light reflection. Boo. Not to mention circulation also slows, meaning your usual glow is gone and your lines appear more pronounced.

In order to accurately describe winter hair, we thought we’d just use a thesaurus to find as many word for ‘sad’ as possible. With the central heating on ‘high’, our hair is prone to dryness, while regularly pulling on jumpers and hats means frizz. Who’s loving winter now?

Too many hot showers and not enough body cream can make your skin resemble that of a desert creature’s. Arms and legs have fewer oil glands, so they tend to be drier and scalier than other parts, especially in the winter so it’s important to not neglect our bodies.

The Solution: The trick here is to work on what’s going on in the inside. By drinking lots of water (you didn’t think you’d read a beauty piece that didn’t advocate drinking water did you?) and topping up on omega 3’s, which are the essential fatty acids found in foods such as salmon and walnuts, you’ll give your skin a much needed boost of hydration. For an extra dose of skin wizardry, take a supplement such as Vitabiotics Perfectil Platinum. The Clinical Interventions in Ageing trial concluded that taking the tablets protected skin against the ageing effects of the cold season. Now that’s a science lesson worth paying attention to. Vitabiotics Perfectil Platinum £23.95 vitabiotics.com

The Solution: It’s simple really; Conditioner! It should include silicones to lock down the outer cuticle layer and seal in moisture. Equally important are quaternary ammonium compounds ("quats"), which leave hair soft and silky, neutralising the static electricity that causes flyaways. Oscar award winning actress, Cate Blanchett recently revealed her ultimate hair hero to be the Philip Kingsley Moisture Extreme range. It’s great for transforming dull hair into dazzling tresses and dry strands into super-soft locks and if it’s good enough for Cate... Philip Kingsley Moisture Extreme Conditioner £19 philipkingsley.co.uk 16

The Solution: Now go with us on this one… Milk. Milk does a body good— inside and out. The natural fats and lactic acid in moo juice can soften skin, lightly exfoliate, and abate irritation. Draw yourself a nourishing bath by adding two cups of skimmed milk to warm-not hot (we don’t want any curdling!) water. Soak for about 15 minutes, pat skin dry, and apply a milk-and-honey cream to boost the benefits. We love Burt's Bees Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey Body Lotion that is proven to give moisture for 24 hours and at just £9.99 it’s a steal! GROOMING

Snow pictured may or may not have been in the UK Don’t let the chill of the inevitable frozen winter ahead wreak havoc on your handsome man face. Harsh winds, unpredictable climates and central heating all take their toll on your skin, stripping it of moisture and essential nutrients. So we’ve picked a few of our favourite products for your bathroom and man bag to make sure the elements don’t render you ugly.

Menscience Advanced Antioxidants Daily Supplement

Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser

Kiehl's Facial Fuel Lip Balm

Biotherm Homme High Recharge Day Cream

£18 mankind.co.uk

£9 kiehls.co.uk

£32 biotherm.co.uk

£27 mankind.co.uk

This 2-in-1 liquid facial cleanser and toner deeply cleanses to remove impurities and surface oil, without causing any irritation or leaving the skin feeling dry. The natural formula works gently without stripping the skin to leave you feeling clean, hydrated and fresh. As well as cleansing and clarifying the skin, this daily must reduces pore size, and helps to balance the skin oiliness or dryness.

Not only will this little fella make you instantly kissable, it will also protect you from the scrofulous plague that is the cold sore. This noshine lip balm also protects and helps relieve chapped or cracked lips without you looking like you’ve just plundered your better half’s make-up bag. It contains shea butter – the natural fat obtained from the fruit of the african karite tree – and squalane, a highly refined olive-based oil.

This is the Don Vito Corleone of facial moisturisers. It will reduce signs of winterinduced duress and pep your face up with a combination of Oligo-vitamins and pure ginseng. Slap it on and it’ll have you feeling like an updated, if not slightly emasculated, but most definitely improved version of yourself.

Hand Chemistry Extreme Hydration Complex

Penhaligon’s Bayolea Beard and Shave Oil

Aesop Rose Hair & Scalp Moisturising Masque

Molton Brown Moisture Rich Aloe & Karite Ultrabar

£18.99 mankind.co.uk

Unless for some (strange) reason you are deliberately going for the lumberjack look then you must remember to not neglect your beard. A little facial fuzz at this time of year makes sense, it’s cold and it saves you having to don a balaclava when the winter wind strikes up, but the cold weather can be harsh on your locks. Penhaligon’s Bear Oil contains a nourishing blend of sunflower, grape seed and wheat germ to hydrate your skin and leave your beard feeling soft.

We don’t blame you for not always getting the daily recommended intake of essential nutrients, particularly in winter when it’s common to crave comfort food rather than richly decorated healthy salads. So to make sure your skin doesn’t pay the price, pop one of these daily to help support you body’s defence system against harmful free radicals that can accelerate the ageing process.

Rough hands may be a symbol of a hardworking man but the sign of an even harder working and more successful man is one who can afford hand cream. The Hand Chemistry Extreme Hydration Complex will intensively nourish and protect your skin, making it ideal for use in cold weather or harsh conditions. Containing a 24% active ingredient, ultra-concentrated formula, the cream contains plant and marine extracts which provide deep and long-lasting hydration.

£45 penhaligons.com

£23 aesop.com/uk It’s not just the ladies who need to worry about the effects the colder weather has on their hair. Low humidity levels dry out your hair in winter too. Enhanced with hydrating (manly) Rose Petal extraction, Aesop’s Moisturising Masque restores vitality and shine, helps maintain a healthy head of hair and scalp and is hydrating. Say, “bye bye dry hair”.

19

£13 moltonbrown.co.uk A true multitasker, this utilitarian moisturizing bar works on both your face and your body, and it creates enough lather to use for shaving too. Shea butter revives parched skin, and the sandalwood, citrus, and patchouli scent will wake you up on dark winter mornings.

GROOMING

Decembeard Because real men grow beards.

Decembeard is the next big thing in men’s lifestyle charity fundraising. Think Movember but with beards. Less Freddie Mercury, more David Beckham. The campaign aims to encourage men throughout the UK to raise sponsorship for bowel cancer by growing a beard. Decembeard was established in the UK in 2011 after Chris Evans announced on twitter that he was going to take part in Decembeard as he’d missed Movember. Alison Selfe, a Beating Bowel Cancer supporter sadly no longer with us, immediately tweeted him back asking him to do it for Beating Bowel Cancer, as she knew his father had died of the disease. Beating Bowel Cancer has been raising funds through Decembeard ever since. With a big target this year of £250,000 there has never been a better time to grow a beard and get on board. The money raised will fund Beating Bowel Cancer’s work supporting people affected by bowel cancer and will help raise awareness of the disease, its symptoms and the importance of early diagnosis.

To help you on your way, grooming guru Lee Kynaston, shares his top tips for a growing the ultimate Decembeard! Get growing!

Moisturise.

The great thing about growing a beard is that you don’t have to do any prep – in fact the opposite is true. All you need to do is down tools and let the fuzz flourish. Every man’s beard grows at its own rate, so don’t be put off or disheartened if progress seems slow at first.

Ditch the itch. To avoid dryness and beard dandruff spend a minute or so massaging in a moisturiser, specialist beard balm or a little shaving oil into the skin beneath your burgeoning face fungus.

Keep it clean.

Beards are a lot like lawns – sometimes they’re cursed by annoying bald patches. But don’t give up if your beard’s a bit uneven at first – gaps often fill out after a few weeks once the hair gets to a decent length.

Keeping facial hair fresh is no more hassle than keeping your face clean – you simply need to spend a few extra seconds massaging in your regular face wash.

• Whiskers grow on average 5.5 inches per year • The average man has 30,000 whiskers on his face • If never shaved, an average beard would grow 27.5 feet. • The amount of time an average man spends shaving in his lifetime is 3350 hours.

Have fun!

Invest in a good trimmer. Like privet hedges beards need regular pruning if they’re to look their best. To keep your Decembeard looking tip-top whiz over it occasionally with a beard trimmer. Opt for one with a good range of cutting lengths.

Beardy looking facts

A little patchy?

Remember, facial hair is fun to experiment with. You won’t know what you’re getting until a few weeks in but that’s part of the fun. And when you’re growing it for Decembeard you’re doing it for a great cause. You never know, you may even decide to keep it

The truth about Bowel Cancer

• We believe the longest beard ever was grown by Hans Langseth of Norway, whose whiskers stretched an incredible 5.33m when measured upon his death in Kensett, Iowa, in 1927. The beard was presented to the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, in 1967.

• Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer and fourth most common cancer • Over 93% of people diagnosed with bowel cancer at an early stage survive for at least five years compared to less than 7% of those diagnosed at a late stage.

• Around 55% of males worldwide sport some sort of facial hair. 22

• Deaths by bowel cancer are decreasing but around 16,000 people die each year in the UK (approx 15,700 people died of bowel cancer in 2011) that’s around 43 people every day. – that’s a life every 33 minutes or potentially 1,300 lives lost to the disease in December

A-Z Wardrobe Essentials ‘C’ is for Cashmere Sweater

EQUIPMENT Asher oversized cashmere sweater £335

VALENTINO Leather-trimmed wool and cashmere-blend sweater £1,560

A cashmere sweater is to some; a second skin. To live without it would seem almost impossible and quite rightly so. It provides comfort and cosiness without the usual bulk of some knitwear, and flatters rather than hides your figure. You can never have too many cashmere items, we advise in building a collection, comprising of a cardigan, a turtleneck, a wrap and a V-neck. The beauty of cashmere is it is both lightweight and luxurious enough to wear anytime, whether it is a chic cardigan over a cocktail dress or a slouched sweater with jeans.

When investing in a cashmere sweater, and it is just that; an investment, it is important to let yourself spend a little extra. Whilst there are options for every price point, a quality sweater that will last, will set you back at least £125. If you’re looking for something lightweight to wear in the summer then look for a cashmere blend with silk, whilst in winter you want to go for a higher ply, remember the higher the ply the warmer (and more expensive).

And for the Gents... A cashmere jumper is a timeless and classic addition to any wardrobe. Wear it over a patterned shirt and with corduroy trousers for a laidback weekend look. WILLIAM LOCKIE - Oxton cashmere crew neck sweater £295 24

IN HER SHOES

Remember the nursery rhyme about the lady who lived in a shoe? Well if you did have to live in a shoe, we’d probably be right in saying a Manolo Blahnik would be the shoe of choice. And according to Kristina Blahnik, the CEO of the globally admired shoe brand, who did just that, it makes for quite an experience…

IN HER SHOES

Photographs by Tom Joy

Sex and the City was really the pivotal point where it went from being a “fashion secret” to a household name.

aving moved to England at the age of six with her mother and sister, when her mother took over as Managing Director for her creative brother’s company, much of Kristina’s life growing up was spent in the shop on Old Church Street, helping out, working there over summer and watching the world fall in love with her uncle’s designs. So any self-respecting shoe lover would assume that Kristina would naturally and very willingly take on a role in the family business; surely she has the dreamiest job in all the land? But in fact she went on to forge a glistening career as an architect for 18 years before returning to the house ‘Manolo’. Speaking with Mariella Tandy of Tatler, at an intimate and exclusive event hosted by Harvey Nichols in Leeds, Kristina described, how a family event five years ago saw her take a break from her career as an architect to lend a hand, joining the business for what was initially supposed to be a 6 month stint. But five years on she is now the CEO of her uncle’s company and is known by many to be his right hand woman.

As guests sat round enjoying a beautifully presented, Victorian inspired afternoon tea in the recently reopened second floor, Kristina recalled stories shared with her, by her uncle and mother about their childhood, and Manolo’s first experience of designing shoes, growing up in the Canary Islands and fashioning shoes out of Cadbury chocolate tin foil wrappers for lizards he would catch and keep in his pockets. In fact Manolo’s journey to becoming one of the most celebrated shoe designers in the world was not entirely straight forward. From forming tin foil footwear for lizards he would then go on to write for Paris Vogue, own an antiques shop, plan to study law in Geneva and join the UN before finally moving to America to become a set designer. It was during his time designing creative sets that he would meet Mrs Vreeland who was the Editor in Chief at the time of American Vogue who noticed his shoes to be the most elaborate elements of his sets and told him to focus on those. From his first showing at an Ossie Clark runway show in 1972, he has come a long way, but incredibly Kristina noted that despite his huge 26

rise to success he still devotes as much time and attention personally to each and every design, which perhaps is half of the magic of the Manolo Blahnik brand, “He doesn’t have any design teams or anything, it is just him on his own and no shoe is a commercial product… he will talk to the drawings and the shoes that he is cutting “I see this one being worn by so and so in this gala or something or other.” They all have little stories.” Despite its global recognition and reputation, at the core of Manolo Blahnik’s brand is its commitment to quality and excellence. They are, above all, committed to making sure the product is just so as Kristina stressed. It has never been a priority of Blahnik’s to maximise commerciality and this is in part due to the fact that the business is not simply family run in its board of directors but in that it has received no outside investment, “it means that we don’t have to answer to the bottom line of a spreadsheet which I think is the ultimate killer of all creativity. We are about optimising, not maximizing everything and commerciality is really the lowest of our priorities.

It is creativity, quality, integrity, modesty, detail and comfort above all.” And after 42 years it would seem their method and approach has been successful, although Kristina does admit they are now making small in steps into expanding the brand in the UK having opened their first stores outside of London, with Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh and Leeds and it seems their relationship with the luxury designer retailer is one they serve to cherish, as Kristina adds that should the retailer wish for Manolo to create something specific for its customers then it would certainly be a project the designer would embrace. But despite insisting that commercialisation is not central to their strategy and having never ran a product placement campaign, Manolo Blahnik has still become a global brand, and whilst the values, quality and creative genius of Manolo are primarily responsible for the brands success, it could be said that the popularity of the brand is due in part, too two widely successful TV shows, ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ both of which helped to make the shoe designer a household name, something which Kristina greatly acknowledges, “Sex and the City was really the pivotal point where it went from being a “fashion secret” to a household name.” But whilst it might feel that Manolo Blahnik are poised and in the perfect position to start launching perfumes, accessories, sunglasses and shoes for younger fans, like so many other global designers have done before, Kristina suggested that this is not their plan. Rather she recited her mantra of “Don’t maximise, optimise”, going on to explain that whilst growth can be exciting it also begs the question, where do we go from here? “You can’t sustain that level of growth, so don’t try and grow, just try to be.” Having spoken openly of the brands position on growth and development and in great detail of her uncle’s creative process, did you know he has an ever growing archive of 30,000 designs that never make it to the shop floor? We all began to imagine that Kristina may be the only woman to have a Manolo Blahnik collection to rival that of Carrie Bradshaw, the fashion savvy character credited with the rise of the brand, but she insists that her shoe wardrobe is humble and modest, claiming that her active lifestyle, pounding the pavements, dashing from meetings to shows, means that she goes through shoes far too quickly to build up a collection. In fact her pet peeve is when women don’t look after their heels, “When someone lets the tips of their heels go to metal. Oh my god the sound of metal on the pavement is my hell! I’m looking at them like please, please take them off!” but whilst she may not have collected a huge number of shoes she certainly will never find herself short, as a sample size 40 she admitted to being lucky enough to frequently raid the sample cupboard and borrow from the new collections! 27

STYLE

IN HER SHOES Clearly she is an inspiring and multi-skilled woman in business, having firstly worked as a successful architect before joining her family’s business as CEO, but she credits her ability to smile through even the most difficult challenges as her key to staying on track and rising above any problems, “Don’t have any expectations of anything and that way you will never be disappointed. I mean the worst things can happen and as long as you smile through it – unless it’s a true catastrophe- you can always strategise your way out of it.” But perhaps another reason she manages her position so well is her proximity to her uncle, speaking every day to the designer, she describes it as similar to experiencing a family Christmas each day and it’s no wonder when your business partner is so inspired and creative. When asked about her uncle’s method for finding inspiration it seems the list of possible sources is endless, from books and films, Manolo has an unrivalled knowledge of film, to botany and history, it would seem that Manolo Blahnik can draw inspiration from not only the artistically charged but also the mundane,

Photographs by Tom Joy

Recently she has found herself pounding the streets of London in search of new offices, but while she often adopts flats for racing around the capital she says that a lifetime of practice means that she can survive even an entire day of wearing eleven and half centimetre heels without so much of a pinch which is a testament to the craftsmanship of Manolo and his commitment to creating beautiful footwear that does not compromise on comfort! Talking of her role in the business Kristina stresses the variety of her job, with no two days being the same and each day demanding something new of her. A primary role of Kristina’s is to monitor the market and to ensure that her uncle’s creations translate to the various territories their customers can be found in, “you know he is designing in central Europe, his mind set is I’m designing A/W hence I’m designing boots so we have to then pull in and make sure he is designing for other territories and that he’s got all the categories covered. So he might come up with a boot and then we may create a sandal appropriate for the Dubai market based on his pattern and idea”.

28

creating magic from the everyday. His current collection, which was on display at the exclusive event, is inspired by British Victoriana, life in the courts of Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria with each design in the collection possessing its own story, with unrivalled attention to detail. There is so much to be taken away from the experience of meeting Kristina, her striking elegance and eloquence, her devotion to her uncle’s company and to Manolo Blahnik himself. Often, imagination, creativity and artistry can go unappreciated and unrecognised, but the Blahnik’s family business is a true reflection of the magic in believing in a vision, staying true to that vision and sharing it with others. In a world dominated by commercialisation, capitalisation and celebrity it is both refreshing and inspiring to see success for those who have instead cherished values such as creativity, quality, integrity, modesty, detail and comfort. You can shop the current Manolo Blahnik collection on the second floor at Harvey Nichols, Leeds.

any of their designs for a multitude of occasions, work, lunch, date night, cocktails. The collection seems intelligent; they have considered every aspect of the professional, domestic and social woman’s day and have created a wardrobe to reflect her and her demanding diary. Their Quinton trousers, based on the classic Jodhpur, are tailored from intelligent fabric for an exceptional fit – tough yet pliable, smooth yet resilient. Perhaps one of the most versatile pieces in the collection, they work for the office, worn with the contemporary Bourasque jacquard jersey jacket or for the weekend, paired with the Levin jacket and trainers.

They pride themselves on creating clothes that allow a woman to feel and look her best. Clothes that instil a self-confidence, which they hope will then percolate into every aspect of the wearer’s day, every day.

Each time we go back and look at the collection we are struck by how laidback and relaxed it feels. It oozes sophistication, with exceptional tailoring and an elegant colour palette of navys monochrome and pastels. Nothing is overdone; there are hints of metallic, leather and asymmetry but never too much. You get a real sense of a collection designed after careful and considerate observation, nothing appears to have been overlooked or done for the sake of it. With their next collection ‘Menswear Tailoring for Women’ due to launch in the coming weeks, we can’t wait to see what Rose & Willard do next as we note them down as one to watch.

Designed at their studio in South London, the majority of the British brand’s manufacturing also takes place in the capital with some of their key creations being produced entirely in-house. LASVIT Beauty and elegance came together in the heart of Europe and made Czech glass, also known as Bohemian, famous for its uniqueness and extraordinary quality.

It became the decoration of choice in nearly every palace for centuries. Whether cut, blown or otherwise embellished, the sights of Roman Emperor Rudolf II, French king Louis XV or Empress Elizabeth the Great of Russia surely occasionally fell on its sparkling surface as they were shaping human history.

The intelligent manufacture of locally available natural resources and versatility of the product allowed the glass to become a staple of Czech heritage, a symbol of the small country’s aesthetic tradition and a craft passed on from generation to generation. Bohemian glass adapted to every artistic course and became a

small taste of luxury that everybody desires to own to this day. The brand Lasvit, founded in 2007 by Leon Jakimič, sheds a new light on Bohemian glass and takes it into the next millennium. Lasvit combines the authenticity of glass craft with innovative technologies 42

and creative craftsmanship. In a few short years, Lasvit has established itself as the authority delivering bespoke lighting sculptures and art installations made from hand-blown glass, each of them fully illustrating Lasvit’s mission: To transform glass into breathtaking light and design experiences.

Bohemian perfection defines everything we do – unconventional free-spirited creativity striving for radiant perfection in every design.

Host the Ultimate Christmas Party Throwing an elegant holiday get-together -- whether a sit-down dinner or a cocktail party -- doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are a few tips for hosting a wonderful Christmas gathering without breaking a sweat. First, you need to determine whether you want a sit-down dinner or something more casual, like a cocktail party. Our advice is play to your strengths, if you’re not a confident cook, now may not be the time to offer up a five course meal to your nearest and dearest.

Who’s on your ‘Nice’ List? Once you've decided what kind of party you're going to host, determine the date, time, guest list, and menu. Then put together a list of people to invite and decide how you're going to get the word out (you can send an invitation via email or post, or you can call guests). We suggest inviting your guests at least three to four weeks in advance if not sooner, as calendars fill up fast around the festive season.

Festive Feast Ideas If you've decided to host a cocktail

party, put together a list of the appetizers you'd like to serve. We suggest using recipes that can be made in advance, which will save you time and energy on the day of the party. Or you could always cheat…at this time of year shops are full of fancy food, ready prepared to save you both hours and energy, giving you more time to focus on the important stuff like which drinks to serve and what you’ll wear! If you're having a dinner party, settle in advance on a simple menu and if you haven’t cooked it before, do a test run. No one wants to make a soufflé for the first time when they have a table of twelve expectant guests waiting. QUICK TIPS: Buffets make dinner parties easy: You can get dishes out quickly and keep them warm while guests can help themselves. For a stress-free cocktail party, stock the pantry and prepare hors d'oeuvres ahead of time. 48

Make a List At least a day before, make a list and schedule of what needs to be made and when. Leave at least an hour before the party for any last minute emergencies and, of course, to get ready and relax before guests arrive.

Decide on Decorations When it comes to decorations, think small. Save space for food by displaying low arrangements of blooms in lieu of a large centrepiece. Use small accents, such as gilded nuts, to fill any empty spots on the dining or buffet table. Light a few scented candles half an hour before guests are due to arrive to help create atmosphere and ambience. We love True Grace’s Fig scented candle for adding warmth; it’s inviting, festive and perfect for dinner parties. True Grace Fig Scented Candle £28 johnlewis.com

LSA Julia Gold Neck Decanter £55 lsa-international.com We would suggest serving a selection of three signature cocktails alongside traditional offerings of wine & champagne. Having a menu is not only impressive but also means that guests know your limits. Don’t try and please everybody. No, you can’t make one of those unusual little drinks a bar tender in Madagascar once whipped up using a coconut and a lychee. For those of you wanting real wow factor but as little work to do as possible, might we suggest hiring a professional mixologist…

Enjoy! Last but not least, enjoy yourself! They key to being a fantastic entertainer is to look like you are having an amazing time yourself! If you are having a good time, your guests will have a great time as well.

The Bar Set up a separate station (in another room or area if possible) for drinks. Stock it with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage choices, ice, cocktail napkins, and appropriate glassware. Features Editor, Sophia says “Use a butler tray stand as a make shift festive bar – dress it with flowers and a crystal carafe, a few of your favourite drinks and a couple of bowls filled with nuts and olives for guests to snack on while they pour themselves a drink.”

Enjoy your Perfect Piper Moment this Christmas Christmas and the festive period is a time when many people want to enjoy Champagne with family and friends. So we asked Helen MacKenzie, the brand ambassador for Piper Heidsieck Champagne to share her top tips to help you enjoy the ‘bubbly’ experience to the full:

Make sure you serve champagne chilled, but not too cold. If too cold, you will lose the delightful aromas and flavours of the wine within the glass. Take the bottle out of the fridge a few minutes before serving it to give your guests the best experience possible.

If you have an ice bucket, fill it two thirds of the way with ice topped up with a little water, which will let the bottle chill evenly. If not, then pop it back in the fridge between servings.

Glassware is very important, but don’t worry if you don’t have expensive vessels. A clean glass is the most important thing and never use detergent when washing glasses. Residue of detergent stays even on glass that appears clean and this will affect the flow of the ‘mousse’ (bubbles). You may think your champagne is flat when actually it’s the glass doing the damage! Many people enjoy drinking from traditional Champagne flutes which enhance the flow of the bubbles and the aroma. The best types are those in a tulip style with a rounded top. There are also Champagne ‘Coupes’ saucer shaped vessels which were the height of fashion

at the turn of the century. Whilst looking the business, these are not great for the bubbles due to the large surface area. Lastly, many people do not realise that Champagne can be enjoyed from wine glasses, rounded ones are the best and this gives the best experience (particularly with vintage Champagne) allowing the wine to move around and release the delicious aromas.

Opening a bottle of Champagne is not too difficult. Be careful to open away from fellow guests as the cork travels at up to 35 mph! The best method is to hold the cork firmly with one hand and twist the bottle with the other hand. Nice and steady will give you a festive ‘pop’ and avoid any ‘podium spillages’.

If you are simply enjoying a glass or two, then best to invest in a good Champagne stopper. These are not expensive and if applied straight away to the open bottle, will keep the wine fresh in the fridge for a day or two. A metal spoon in a bottle is a ‘Champagne myth’ and has no effect whatsoever.

NV (Non Vintage) is the most popular Champagne choice due to its easy drinking 50

style, and versatility (PIPER-HEIDSIECK NV RRP £36.49). Many retailers have promotions on in the run up to the festive period so keep your eyes peeled to take advantage of some excellent offers. Important to note that NV Champagne is ready to drink when purchased and is not meant to be kept for a long time. (Should be drunk within 2-3 years of purchase). Over time, it will lose its freshness and vitality.

If you want to treat yourself to something extra special then you could opt for a vintage Champagne (PIPER-HEIDSIECK Vintage 2006 retails at £49.95 at Harrods) which has a fuller, more pronounced style and would pair well with turkey and all the trimming plus other meats including game and goose. And for those very special occasions indeed you could opt for Prestige Cuvée, the ultimate in luxury! (Cuvée Rare 2002 retails at £175 in Harrods). Vintage Champagne can be kept for many years. Ideal storage is somewhere cool and dark with the most important factor being constant temperature. So a wine rack in a kitchen is not advised!

Beautiful things for beautiful homes

Champagne is mainly enjoyed as an aperitif before dinner or as a celebration drink, but do you know it goes very well with food? • Why not try NV with your festive canapés? Chicken , cheese, seafood and prawns all work well. Cheese twists made from buttery pastry are an ideal choice! • PIPER-HEIDSIECK Rosé Sauvage NV (RRP £44.99) is a great choice with duck or pork, a lighter choice than red wine but still with the body to stand up to the flavours. Also good with dark chocolate and that’s a must at Christmas time.

• Locally handmade curtains & blinds

/DUJH VHOHFWLRQ RI ÀQH fabrics & wall coverings

• All styles of blinds, furniture & accessories on display RYHU ÁRRUV

:LGH FKRLFH RI ÁRRULQJ WR enhance your home

• Demi Sec is a sweeter style of Champagne and pairs well with all Christmas sweet treats including Christmas pudding, cake and mince pies. A lovely idea would be to serve to guests on Christmas day instead of a dessert wine. PIPER-HEIDSIECK Cuvée Sublime NV (RRP £44.99) is also lovely with cheese so would be an exceptional choice with a cheese board at any point over the holiday season. Finally to mention of course that Christmas is a time of giving and Champagne is a great choice for a gift. Who wouldn’t be delighted presented with a lovely bottle? 70% of all Champagne purchased in grocery is for gifts, so it seems that many people in the UK agree, particularly when many come in lovely gift boxes! So enjoy your festive fizz and remember, “Champagne is for life, not just for Christmas!” Please drink PIPER-HEIDSIECK responsibly. 74 Galloway Lane, Pudsey, West Yorkshire, LS28 8LE Tel/Fax: 01274 666326 Email: debs@briggatehouse.com www.briggatehouseinteriors.co.uk

Cocktails & Canapés If you’re hosting a cocktail party this festive season, then why not impress your guests with one of our favourite recipes? Whilst you’re at it, a selection of delicious canapés wouldn’t go a miss either...

Sir Robin of Locksley Gin: This gin instantly hits of juniper with more delicate aromas of elderflower bubbling through underneath. Deliciously smooth and round on the palate with warm cassia notes soothed with dandelion, pink grapefruit adds an underlying sweetness and lingering citrus finish. It is balanced yet distinctively unique. Cocktail Recipe: R’NEGRONI A Negroni with a tweak to knock your socks off – bitter and dry but no namby-pamby. We like this all year round, but its spicy warmth will reach your toes in late Autumn and throughout the Winter: • 50ml Sir Robin of Locksley Distilled Artisan Gin • 25ml Carpano’s Antica Formula – Rosso Vermouth • 25ml Campari Bitters Pour the ingredients into an icefilled old-fashioned glass and stir well. Garnish with a flamed orange zest twist.

Aviation Gin: Kraken Black Spiced Rum:

Aviation belongs to an entirely new category of dry gins. These gins embody a shift away from the usual overabundance of juniper toward a more forward balance of botanicals. Aviation explores the rich, floral and savory notes of lavender, cardamom, and sarsaparilla to capture the lushness, spice, creativity, and freshness of the Pacific Northwest.

Babička Vodka: We love this Czech blend. It has a light creamy floral bouquet with subtle undertones of citrus and wormwood and has a smooth texture with a sweet subtle taste of rich vanilla, caramel and aniseed. It’s the perfect vodka for the discerning drinker and makes a great cocktail.

Cocktail Recipe: FRENCH 75 Whether you're entertaining over the festive period or having a summer picnic, this early 20thcentury sparkling gem is a perfect year-round cocktail. • 30ml Aviation American Gin • 30ml Freshly pressed lemon juice • 20ml Simple syrup • 20ml Brut Champagne

THE BABIČKA MARTINI A twist on a classic, this is sure to please.

In a cocktail shaker, add spirits, syrup & lemon juice, fill with ice & shake vigorously. Fine strain into a chilled cocktail glass and top with Brut Champagne. Garnish with a lemon disc or twist.

• 75 ml Babička Vodka • Wash of vermouth Wash glass with vermouth and discard, pour vodka straight into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a twist or an olive.

Named for the legendary sea monster, Kraken is a blend of Caribbean rums that should certainly suit any fans of rich, navy-style rum. Launched in the UK in early 2010, it has a nutty aroma and an extraordinarily rich, spicy flavour, with hints of cinnamon, creamy caramel and gingerbread, not to mention the packaging is great! Cocktail Recipe:

THE PERFECT STORM Made with delicious Kraken rum, this classic cocktail is rich, spicy and really packs a punch in the taste stakes. • 35ml Kraken Rum • Jamaican Ginger Beer • 2 wedges of lime to garnish In a tall glass, pour the rum over ice. Top up with ginger beer. Squeeze the juice of one of your lime wedges into the cocktail and garnish with the other.

Canapés Booths Goats Cheese & Caramelised Onion Crostini £5.49 Hot & Spicy Prawns £5.99 Brie de Meaux and Cranberry Filo Parcels £5.99 See the full range online at booths.co.uk

We suggest serving your cocktails with some delicious canapés. Of course you can make your own but if like us you’d prefer more time to prep your hair and outfit than your tempura prawns then do as we do and shop at Booths!

There are a couple of melancholy moments, sure, but it’s much more a ‘if it’s all gone to sh*t, f*ck it, let’s have a dance’ kind of record.” This month, Paloma releases an updated version of the album with four new songs.

I am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban

More Fool Me

By Malala Yousafzai, Christina Lamb

Stephen Fry invites readers to take a glimpse at his life story in the unputdownable More Fool Me. In his early thirties, Stephen Fry - writer, comedian, star of stage and screen - had, as they say, 'made it'. What could possibly go wrong? Then, as the 80s drew to a close, he discovered a most enjoyable way to burn the candle at both ends, and took to excess like a duck to breadcrumbs. Writing and recording by day, and haunting a never ending series of celebrity parties, drinking dens, and poker games by night, in a ludicrous and impressive act of bravado, he fooled all those except the very closest to him, some of whom were most enjoyably engaged in the same dance. He was - to all intents and purposes - a high functioning addict. Containing raw, electric extracts from his diaries of the time, More Fool Me is a brilliant, eloquent account by a man driven to create and to entertain revealing a side to him he has long kept hidden.

By Stephen Fry

Winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, in 2009 Malala Yousafzai began writing a blog on BBC Urdu about life in the Swat Valley as the Taliban gained control, at times banning girls from attending school. When her identity was discovered, Malala began to appear in both Pakistani and international media, advocating the freedom to pursue education for all. In October 2012, gunmen boarded Malala's school bus and shot her in the face, a bullet passing through her head and into her shoulder. Remarkably, Malala survived the shooting. At a very young age, Malala Yousafzai has become a worldwide symbol of courage and hope. Her shooting has sparked a wave of solidarity across Pakistan, not to mention globally, for the right to education, freedom from terror and female emancipation.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North

By David Nicholls

By Richard Flanagan

David Nicholls brings to bear all the wit and intelligence that graced ONE DAY in this brilliant, bittersweet novel about love and family, husbands and wives, parents and children. Long-listed for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction 2014, the story tells of Douglas Petersen, who understands his wife's need to 'rediscover herself' now that their son is leaving home. He just thought they'd be doing their rediscovering together. So when Connie announces that she will be leaving, too, he resolves to make their last family holiday into the trip of a lifetime: one that will draw the three of them closer, and win the respect of his son. One that will make Connie fall in love with him all over again. The hotels are booked, the tickets bought, the itinerary planned and printed. What could possibly go wrong?

August, 1943. In the despair of a Japanese POW camp on the Thai-Burma Death Railway, Australian surgeon Dorrigo Evans is haunted by his affair with his uncle's young wife two years earlier. His life is a daily struggle to save the men under his command from starvation, from cholera, from pitiless beatings. Until he receives a letter that will change him forever. Moving deftly from the POW camp to contemporary Australia, from the experiences of Dorrigo and his comrades to those of the Japanese guards, this savagely beautiful novel tells a story of love, death, and family, exploring the many forms of good and evil, war and truth, guilt and transcendence, as one man comes of age, prospers, only to discover all that he has lost.

GETTING AHEAD AT WORK

Work life doesn’t end at the office door. From business trips and away days to socialising with colleagues and the office party, it is important to remain professional both in and out of the workplace.

With the festive season fast approaching, we share our top tips for a successful night out with colleagues. One where we ensure your dignity will remain intact. Make sure you participate in after-work drinks and socials. Keep a track of who's bought what, and know when it's you round. Behind the gloss of festive celebrations and the camaraderie of leaving do's is the reality that you are socialising with colleagues under the watchful eye of those higher up the food chain. It's tactical to socialise. Although it can be more fun to mix with the underlings, your boss should neither be besieged nor ignored.

Be confident and friendly. Be armed with a few social icebreakers (extra-curricular activities, families, relationships). Just because you're off campus doesn't mean that you're out with friends: colleagues and bosses are still just that even in the pub at closing time. Familiarity comes with time, so be aware of unspoken barriers. Avoid strong opinion or stark honesty; occasional frisson is interesting, but controversial views may offend. Be smart and social, but know when to draw the line. Circulate and socialise, but keep it upbeat and general. Ask about families, children and holidays. But remember, bluffers and serial liars always get 76

their comeuppance; name-droppers and braggers bore everyone. Don’t gossip, spread rumours or confess your sins. Steer clear of mistletoe and dirty dancing, and keep goodnight kisses innocent. Remember the basics: avoid shots, eat well, alternate drinks with water. Have fun and a few glasses, but don't be the casualty everyone is talking about (and sniggering at) the next day. If things start feeling rocky, go soft or call it a night. The day after still counts too. Crawling in hungover and late (or worse, pulling a sickie) is unforgivably unprofessional.

Problem at work? So, you’ve encountered a problem at work and despite your efforts to resolve it, your employer won’t budge. You’ve decided that it’s time to lodge a claim with an Employment Tribunal (ET): for example, you’ve not received your bonus or you are being paid less than your male colleagues for doing the same job.

What steps do you need to take? 1. If you did not use your employer’s grievance procedure in your attempt to resolve it, you now need to do so. This may of course get the problem fixed but it is also a legal requirement; if you don’t use the grievance process an ET can reduce any compensation by up to 25%. 2. It is mandatory to follow the ACAS “Early Conciliation” process before you can start

an ET claim. ACAS will give you a unique number at the end of the procedure and the ET will require that number when you start your ET claim. 3. Keep a close eye on time limits - to pursue a claim in an Employment Tribunal there is often a 3 month time limit (6 months in equal pay claims, like the example above of a female employee being paid less than

It’s fair to say that going to an ET can be a complex and tricky process. For more guidance and assistance on handling problems at work – and a sensible, sympathetic but realistic approach - contact David Sorensen at Morrish Solicitors LLP on 03333 44 9600 or david.sorensen@morrishsolicitors.com.

male colleagues). Typically, you will need to start an ET claim within 3 months (less one day) of the date of the incident that you are complaining about or, for an Unfair Dismissal claim, within 3 months (less one day) of the date of termination of employment. Use of the ACAS Early Conciliation process may extend the time limit.

We assist people with all shapes and sizes of problems at work - advice on contracts, disciplinary/grievance procedures, Settlement Agreements, discrimination and mediation, and we offer representation in the ETs and Courts, and can assist with grievances and ACAS Early Conciliation.

The rise of the ‘part-time’ Finance Director... ...and how it has become a crucial role for businesses with ambition. As the leaves start to turn and you begin to feel the autumn chill of an evening, does the prospect of running your business in 2015 fill you with a mixture of excitement and apprehension? Excitement because you know your growing business has yet more potential and apprehension because you know that your already heavy workload and the strains on business finance may only increase as the company becomes more successful. Although these opening few lines might sound like the opening of an advert for relaxation therapy they are in fact an introduction to a far more practical solution that both frees up time for the entrepreneurial spirit to blossom further and provides planning and guidance for the future, perhaps even all the way to a successful exit. Embattled business owners have traditionally turned to their accountants or perhaps a business consultant as they recognise a growing need for support and financial and commercial advice. Whilst there are plenty of excellent examples of both these breeds of adviser they share a certain lack of real engagement in the business and may often dispense wise advice, leaving the business owner with some great ideas but still no time to make them happen or continuing guidance about how to do so. There is however an alternative approach to the situation which is proving increasingly popular with ambitious entrepreneurs running businesses of all sizes from £1M right up to £50M turnover. The role of a full-time Finance Director is typically associated with larger businesses with serious turnover and a significant finance department. But most growing businesses are not aware that

even they have the option to take advantage of the skills of a senior Finance Director but at less than a 1/3rd of the cost. How useful would it be for your growing business to be able to: • Sit down with an experienced FD and build plans for the future covering cash flow, funding, finance staff, tax, contracts, IT systems and the whole commercial set-up of the business? • Objectively assess the commercial risks to your business and plan accordingly?

of the phone) you could bring all the benefits that larger businesses have without the cost of a full-time FD.

• Approach the bank or a major contract negotiation with a proposal founded on a professional business plan and with your FD sitting alongside you to add professional financial backing and credibility to your own passion for and knowledge of your business?

The significant advantage of the part-time FD approach over the consultant or the interim FD is that the FD gets to understand the business and becomes part of the team… they just happen not to be there in person every day!

• Have an experienced ear at the end of the phone to give you an informed but objective view of that idea that came to you in the shower or the problem that has appeared in your inbox?

So how does it work if you have a part-time FD? • Although some clients prefer to work on daily rates, a retainer is often the preferred method of charging for part-time FD’s. For a monthly fee the FD will spend an agreed amount of time (which could typically be anything from once a month to twice a week) at the business but will be there for you on the phone or email in between visits for advice and support. You have the sounding board and the professional second opinion on tap in your business without having to worry about the cost every time you pick up the phone.

• Sit around a board table once a month and really step back and evaluate progress based on solid management information and with the input of someone who has been there before? • Have your finance staff mentored and developed to grow with your business? How many hours in a week or a month would reaping all those benefits above really take if time was used carefully and focused on agreed priorities? With an FD there 1 day a week, 1 day a fortnight or even only once a month (but always on the end

• The work can often start with an initial review of the business to 80

help establish the requirement for an FD and the scope and priorities for the work they will do. This review is often charged at a fixed cost reflecting a lower rate as a sign of the FD’s commitment to learning about and becoming part of the business. • There is also usually no contract tying you in to the FD’s services and you have the option to end the relationship at any time if circumstances change. The business leading the way in providing part-time Finance Directors is the FD Centre. It’s not an employment agency or consultancy but a collection of 110 self-employed professionally-qualified Finance Directors covering the whole of the UK and providing FD services to ambitious businesses across every sector. There is a team of 13 FD’s in the northern region, 8 of whom are Yorkshire based. All the FD’s are carefully selected for their experience across a wide range of financial and especially commercial environments and for their ability to quickly understand a business and become part of the team.

Whilst clients sometimes look for sector-specific experience when choosing a part-time FD it is often the broad financial experience and the personality fit which is most important. All the FD’s in the FD Centre share their knowledge through a forum and if a client has a specific issue on which their FD needs support, the FD can draw on the collective knowledge of over 100 other FD’s and the collective 1000’s of years of experience they have between them. The FD Centre operates through a group of Regional Directors and through the FD’s themselves who are all actively involved in building relationships with other professionals who in turn support the client-base. If

an FD Centre Finance Director recommends an Insurance Broker it won’t be because they play golf together but because the broker has established a track record with FD Centre clients. If you think that all this sounds like just what you might need to support the growth of your business and allow you to take it to the next stage then one of the FD Centre’s Financial Directors will be on hand to explore the possibilities and opportunities available without any obligation. It is in the interests of both the FD and the potential client that, if an FD is to join the business, it has to be the right thing for both - there is no question of a hard sell.

A CLASSIC INVESTMENT Whether you are a classic car collector or a first time investor, there is a lot to be said of the charm and value of an old engine. It must be said that classic cars are hot property right now. Forget your ‘hybrids and your super fancy Bluetooth enabled, satnav equipped, practically a hovercraft’ cars. It’s time to start looking back to the cars of yesterday. A study by one of the country’s leading estate agents

Such a wise investment, prestige cars are in fact among 10 items included in the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index, along with fine wines, antique furniture, watches, chinese ceramics, jewellery, wine, art, coins, stamps and gold. Perhaps one reason for their rising

has found that the price of marque models such as Ferraris, Bugattis and Bentleys has more than quadrupled over the past decade, with some top of the range cars value rising by more than 430 per cent, compared with the value of gold which has risen by just 273 per cent. 82

value is their global appeal, wherever there are roads, there are cars and so they hold international favour, a tangible asset in a world steeped in economic uncertainty. But whilst some might plan to buy a classic, only to hide it away

Forget your ‘hybrids and your super fancy Bluetooth enabled, satnav equipped, practically a hovercraft’ cars.

somewhere to be kept in mint condition, most enthusiasts will tell you that the true pleasure comes from driving a classic car.

and can be sourced relatively easily. Buy a rarer car, however, and you are likely to see the cost of parts and potentially labour rise substantially.

One might argue that driving your investment stops it being an investment at all with further costs but what if you look at it a little differently? Your initial spend to purchase the car and its subsequent value is your investment while the running costs and cost of ownership is money spent on a hobby. Totally different.

If your car is not in need of major repairs, which could see a bill run into the thousands – a risk with any car, new or old, then running costs, including insurance, tax and bills for general maintenance often cost between £500-£1000 a year, according to several classic car owners questioned at the Classic on the Common event in Harpenden.

Now we’ve convinced you that it’s OK to drive your classic, a few words on how to keep running costs down. The advantage with a classic is that it won’t have the complicated electronics and computers of modern-day cars and labour does not have to be expensive. For modern and common classics, parts do not need to be expensive either –

Unless you actually want to turn fixing up a car into your hobby and are a mechanic or someone learning mechanics, then it pays to avoid vehicles that need huge amounts of work and risk turning into a money pit. Instead, buy the best you can afford.

BMW i8 Featuring jaw-dropping looks and a hi-tech plug-in petrol-electric drivetrain, the innovative BMW electric car sets new standards for performance and efficiency.

The second model in the BMW electric ‘i’ family, following on from the BMW i3 family car, the i8 is set to rival the Audi R8 with its superior styling and high performance. Yes, the BMW i8 is a hybrid with CO2 emissions equal to that of a Prius, but that in no way stops it being a supercar with price and performance figures to match a Porsche 911.

mid-mounted 1.5-litre threecylinder turbocharged engine that drives the rear wheels through a sixspeed automatic gearbox. Plus with the addition of the powerful 129bhp electric motor linked to lithium ion batteries, the BMW boasts a healthy combined power output of 357bhp and a thumping 570Nm of torque. Utilising both power sources enables the sprint from zero to 62mph in just 4.4 seconds, going on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. All the while combined fuel consumption stands at 135mpg and CO2 emissions come in at 49g/ km, so whilst it pack the punch of a supercar it boasts the efficiency of a supermini!

The BMW i8 embodies a revolutionary, future-focused interpretation of the driving pleasure, for which BMW is renowned. It has been purpose-designed as a plugin-hybrid sports car offering agile performance, near 50:50 weight distribution and outstanding efficiency. The i8 uses a transverse 86

The BMW i8 has its own version of the LifeDrive architecture developed for BMW i that gives it a unique range of tools for combining intelligent lightweight design and safety – to the highest standard in each case. The horizontally split LifeDrive architecture consists of two separate, independent modules. The combustion engine and electric motor, battery pack, power electronics, chassis components, and structure and crash functions are arranged together in the aluminium Drive Module, while the central element of the Life Module is the

accentuating the width of the BMW i8 and its road-focused stance. The car’s full-LED headlights adopt the hallmark U-shape of BMW i models. The BMW i8 is attention grabbing and is available in a choice of four colours, three of which have been created exclusively for BMW i.

Not only are the technical specifications of this car impressive, it looks sensational too. The front view of the BMW i8 exudes sporting ability. Large front spoiler air intakes generate a feeling of depth. While the broad BMW kidney grille stretches over to the slim headlights,

Hailed as the new supercar for a generation, the i8 takes the best of the power and excitement of driving a supercar and combines it with the goodness and guilt free pleasure of driving a low emission vehicle. It’s a truly modern car for today.

MODE DRIVES

T H E P O RS C H E BOX S T ER S This month we had a real treat at MODE HQ. A beautiful pair of Porsches to play with over a weekend in October with clear blue skies to make the most of these fantastic cars. We had the Boxster S with PDK and the special Martini Edition 911 Carrera. In this issue we look at the Boxster and then next issue you can read about the 911. Porsche Boxster S: The Boxster S is the flagship model in the Boxster range which has evolved again recently. It presents an even more athletic interpretation of the roadster concept with more power and more efficiency. For those who have ever dubbed the Boxster as a poor man’s 911, think again! The Boxster S is a fantastic sports car with great road holding and of course exhilarating acceleration. Our model had the full package with PDK which is Porsche’s double clutch system and a sports exhaust or ‘LOUD BUTTON’ fitted which is a must for that extra thrill. 89

MOTORING Yes the Martini edition 911 is a stand out car for sure but when we picked up the cars from the dealership there was a little more enthusiasm from the Porsche guys for the Boxster. This is due to the overhaul of this model and recent upgrades. The Boxster is a true driver’s car and the road handling is stunning. The looks aren’t bad either. Verdict: I’ve given the Boxster S a five star rating. This is one of my favourites that we’ve ever tested. It is a stunning driving machine. When you compare the facts about cost and performance it all makes sense. It’s as quick and as fun to drive than the standard 911. I really want one.
