FEKP/FESS FESTIVAL EUROPSKE KRATKE PRIČE FESTIVAL OF THE EUROPEAN SHORT STORY 31. 5. – 5. 6. 2015. ZAGREB – RIJEKA www.europeanshortstory.org
DOGAĐANJA / EVENTS Zagreb Nedjelja, 31. svibnja / Sunday, May 31 15:00 Otvaranje FEKP-a 2015: bez formalnosti, molim! / FESS 2015 Opening: No Formalities, Please! Čuvajte se: hrvatski pisci kuhaju! / Beware: Croatian Writers Are Cooking! Zoran Ferić, Senko Karuza, Robert Mlinarec 20:00 Amerike – Otkriće model 1.1 / The Americas – Discovery Model 1.1 Zbir realnostī i zb(i)rka snova, Amerike su podijeljene, suprotstavljene i sjedinjene – poviješću, jezicima, ideologijama i oceanima. Festival otvaraju dobitnica nagrade Orange Lionel Shriver, nova zvijezda meksičke književnosti Valeria Luiselli i nagrađivani hrvatsko-kanadski književnik Josip Novakovich. A sum of realities and a (dis)array of dreams, the Americas are divided, conflicted and united – by their history, languages, ideologies and oceans. What are they like in relation to one another, and to the rest, to the world we belong to? Is there the Old without the New and what do the Americas mean to us today? These are just some of the questions that will be asked during the 14th edition of the FESS and that will take us across national borders and language barriers, through the past and the present of the New World, through its myths and histories, from literature to politics and back. The festival opens with a talk between Orange Prize winner Lionel Shriver, the new star of Mexican literature Valeria Luiselli and the award-winning CroatianCanadian author, Josip Novakovich. O igri identiteta – književnim Ameroeuropljanima i Euroamerikancima – govore peruanski pisci trajno nastanjeni u Španjolskoj: Santiago Roncagliolo, dobitnik nagrade Alfaguara za roman Crveni travanj, i velemajstor kratke priče Fernando Iwasaki. Indeed, what does a South American writer take to Europe? And what does the Old World look like from the distance? Spanish language makes the touchdown easier, but how soft is the landing? Bolaño, Vargas Llosa, García Márquez, Donoso... for each of South American literary giants that made it in Europe there are thousands of those no one heard of. This game of identities – literary Ameroeuropeans and Euroamericans – is discussed by two Peruvian writers permanently living in Spain: Santiago Roncagliolo, the winner of Alfaguara Prize for his novel Red April, and Fernando Iwasaki, the grandmaster of short story. A PEN International Free the Word! event in association with Croatian PEN Zašto je Meksiko važan? / Why Mexico Matters? ÁLVARO ENRIGUE I VALERIA LUISELLI Početkom XIX. st. At the beginning of the 19th century Alexander von Humboldt wrote about Mexico as a country of inequalities – when it came to the distribution of wealth, civilization, agricultural lands, population... In the meantime, Mexico has turned into one of the fastest growing world economies, but inequality still remains a problem and – together with corruption and violence – it threatens the democratic order of the country, which in many ways influences global trends. The changes Mexican society is going through and the challenges that lay before it are discussed by the award-winning Mexican authors Valeria Luiselli and Álvaro Enrigue. Café u dvorištu, Jurja Žerjavića 7/2 20:00 Program ostvaren u suradnji s Booksom i Multimedijalnim institutom MaMa / Program in association with Booksa and MaMa – Multimedia Institute Piščev dnevnik / Chronicle of a Writer DAVID ALBAHARI I ALBERTO MANGUEL Booksa i MaMa predstavljaju program Piščev dnevnik, prvi u nizu razgovora između Davida Albaharija i njegovih kolega, prijatelja i suradnika. Booksa and MaMa present Chronicle of a Writer, the first in the series of conversations between David Albahari and his colleagues, friends and associates. On this occasion, David Albahari converses with Alberto Manguel, an award-winning Canadian-Argentine author who, while working at the Pygmalion bookshop in Buenos Aires, was asked to read to the blind Jorge Luis Borges. Years later he portrayed the enigmatic genius in With Borges (2004) winning the Prix du livre en Poitou-Charentes.

The city that flows – that’s what the Fiumani say about their Rijeka, and we’ll add that Rijeka is also a city that reads! Rijeka has the largest number of readers clubs whose members regularly meet to talk about the books they read, learn about literature and share their impressions of a text. Željka Horvat Čeč introduces the Croatian-born Canadian Josip Novakovich and the Rijeka-born Fiuman Davor Mandić to their readers and together with them discovers what the reader wanted to say – perhaps the writers will be surprised too! The two authors presented here traveled to the Americas and happily returned from them – with a catch of texts and topics – but not all departures are as happy. All too often the Americas were a necessity, a fate of “the small”, a destiny of the poor and ravaged by war. Daša Drndić, one of the best Croatian authors, and Harkaitz Cano, one of the most distinguished contemporary Basque writers, discuss the warmth and the cold of America, America of poetry and prose, of reality and myth, America-the-dream, shattered or perhaps not. U Sobi s pogledom razgovaramo s nagrađivanom autoricom romanā Let's Talk About Kevin, Big Brother, The Post-Birthday World, The New Republic… Amerikankom u Velikoj Britaniji, Lionel Shriver. What controls us, and what happens when we get out of control? Or when we lose it – over our own lives, bodies, hopes, families and feelings… Is the intensity of society’s control the same in the Old and the New World, and what kind of resistance is possible? Finally, does she as an author control her characters and themes (or do they control her)? In A Room with a View we are talking to the award-winning author of Let’s Talk About Kevin, Big Brother, The Post-Birthday World, The New Republic… An American in Great Britain, Lionel Shriver. Regardless if we are talking about the short story or the novel, the signposts of our reading quests always, sooner or later, take us to Argentina. In that map, Borges and Cortázar, Sabato and Arlt are whole continents yet Argentina never seems to cease in creating new, diverse and mesmerizing territories – from Piglia to Neuman, from Aira to Samanta Schweblin.
