Srećko Horvat nije htio otići u Bruxelles da bi otkrio kako funkcionira današnja EU; umjesto toga udružio je snage sa Slavojem Žižekom i napisao knjigu Što Europa želi? (Algoritam, 2013) koja pruža prilično drugačiju i mračniju sliku. Menasse i Horvat u debati o dobrim i lošim stranama Europe, o njezinoj povijesti i budućnosti, o kratkoj i dugoj priči, uz zaplet i rasplet. A distinguished Austrian novelist and essayist Robert Menasse went to Brussels to write a novel about the capital of Europe and came back with a book of essays Der Europäische Landbote, Die Wut der Bürger und der Friede Europas in which he depicts the functioning hierarchy of the EU. Srećko Horvat did not want to travel to Brussels to discover how the EU of today functions, instead he joined forces with Slavoj Žižek and wrote Što Europa želi? (What Europe Wants, 2013), which offers a considerably different and darker image. Menasse and Horvat in a debate on good and bad sides of Europe, on Europe’s history and future, long and short story, with rising action and resolution. O svojim likovima, pričama i bestselerima, a i ponešto o ulozi pornografije u modernom svijetu (da, ima knjigu i o tome!) razgovarat će sa studentima i ljubiteljima nederlandistike. Tommy Wieringa, the superstar of Dutch literature, has got it all – he is read and bought by the Dutch (his last novella had a print run of 700,000 copies!), translated by the foreigners (into more than 15 languages; his hit-novel Joe Speedboat was translated into Croatian), awarded by the critics (there’s more and more awards he has received), and appreciated by the public – the sum total of these criteria earned him the title of the most important Dutch author of 2013 (Editio top 35). About his characters, stories and bestsellers, and, for just a little bit, about the role pornography plays in the modern world (yes, he has written a book about that too!), he will talk to the students and fans of Dutch language and literature. Otvor: Predgovor / Foreword 13 Dobro je znati. Bolid Formule 1 s brojem 13 – ne postoji. Nekretnine na tom broju u Britaniji se, kažu, prodaju jeftinije, na konzolama liftova diljem svijeta trinaesti se katovi preskaču, sobe u hotelima zaobilaze, a ruska svemirska agencija nedavno je priopćila da će sljedeći let broda Sojuz nazvati “Misija 14”, eto, baš zbog toga. No, baš takav – nemio, neparan, izbjegavan i prešućivan – broj 13 je priča, a za dobru je priču ovaj festival oduvijek bio spreman riskirati. U naših trinaest (dižemo čašu!) stalo je fantastičnih pisaca i knjiga, užitaka i smijeha, prijateljstava i otkrića književnih – i baš zahvaljujući njima svako je izdanje FEKP-a imalo vlastitu boju, zvuk i okus. A samo zbog njih (tih boja, zvukova i okusa) i mi smo ovdje gdje jesmo, radeći to što radimo. Možda i najvažnija lekcija koju smo naučili u dosadašnjem školovanju: uz jezik (pisaca i priča), matematiku (fondacija i sponzora) i biologiju (dobar dio članova organizacijskog odbora FEKP-u je posvetio barem trećinu života!), od sviju predmeta festivalskih najvažnija je kemija! A u kemiju ovoga festivala ugrađen je svaki njegov sudionik i organizator, svaki volonter i slušatelj – pa kako da se onda odreknemo čitavog jednog broja, jer svaki je broj godina, a svaka godina su ljudi, a svi ti ljudi su priče, a sve te priče smo... mi? Evo i koga je zapalo da mjesto zauzme u nizu između 12 i 14, na pola puta do našeg 26. izdanja: Sjajni četverac – João Anzanello Carrascoza, João Paulo Cuenca, Ana Paula Maia i Paula Parisot – domaćoj će publici predstaviti književnost ovogodišnje zemlje partnera FEKP-a: kratku priču Brazila! David Vann izniman je gost i njegovi tekstovi predstavit će najbolje iz slavne tradicije američke kratke priče, no neće zaostajati ni Europejci. Na zastavi 13. FEKP-a književne su zvijezde iz&izvan EU: Marica Bodrožić, Paulo Cognetti, Jenni Fagan, Vesna Lemaić, Emir Imamović Pirke, Robert Menasse, Jon McGregor, Damir Uzunović, Tommy Wieringa i Kristīne Želve, a uz njih i oni rođeni pod sretnom zvijezdom (pogađate: književnici hrvatski!): Zoran Ferić, Drago Glamuzina, Marko Gregur, Srećko Horvat, Maja Hrgović, Senko Karuza, Davor Mandić, Zoran Pilić, Edo Popović, Ivana Simić Bodrožić, Želimir Periš... Ali koliko god mnogo bilo – ni to nije sve. Još jednom FEKP vodi pisce u prelijep grad (hvala Šibeniku!), još jednom pokreće prevoditeljsku radionicu (iz brazilske književnosti), još jednom kratku priču spaja s kreativcima iz drugog medija (video-radionica), još jednom kuhamo i čitamo, diskutiramo i knjige predstavljamo, nogomet igramo... a uza sve to, ove 13. godine, u partnerstvu s InYourPocketom i rezidencijom za pisce u Ventspilsu (Latvija) pokrenuli smo natječaj za kratku priču koji domaće pisce vodi na Festival i na Baltik. I može li se onda – pitam – iz utrke izbaciti taj festivalski bolid, jeftino prepustiti to zdanje, ne pritisnuti taj broj na konzoli i ne inzistirati na toj sobi – ne poletjeti tim letom u književni svemir, u priču? Ne, mi svoje trinaestice ne propuštamo. A vi? Vidimo se ovih dana, na Festivalu europske kratke priče. Roman Simić Bodrožić
13 It’s good to know. Formula 1 car number 13 – does not exist. In Britain, they say, the real estate located at this street number is sold for less, on the elevator consoles all over the world the thirteenth floor is skipped, rooms in hotels are avoided, and the Russian Space Agency recently announced that the next flight of the Soyuz spacecraft is going to be called “Mission 14”, probably for this very reason. But, because it is such – unwanted, odd, avoided, and not talked about – the number 13 is a story, and for a good story this festival has always been ready to go out on a limb. In our thirteen (let’s cling our glasses!) we fitted some fantastic writers and books, pleasures and laughter, literary friendships and discoveries – and thanks to them, each edition of the FESS had its own color, sound and taste. And only because of them (those colors, sounds and tastes) we too are where we are, doing what we’re doing. Perhaps the most important lesson we’ve learned in our education up to now: along with the language (of writers and stories), mathematics (of foundations and sponsors), and biology (a good number of our organizing committee members has dedicated at least a third of their lives too the FESS!), out of all festival elements the most important one is chemistry! And each participant and organizer, ever volunteer and audience member is built into the chemistry of this festival – so how could we give up on one whole number, for every number is a year, and every year is people, and all those people are stories, and all those stories are… us? And here’s who got it to occupy a place in the line between 12 and 14, half way to our 26 th edition: The splendid four – João Anzanello Carrascoza, João Paulo Cuenca, Ana Paula Maia and Paula Parisot – will present the literature of the festival’s partner country –Brazilian short story! David Vann is our special guest and his texts will show us the best of the celebrated tradition of the American short story, but the Europeans are not going to fall behind. The standard of the 13 th FESS bears literary stars from&from outside of the EU: Marica Bodrožić, Paulo Cognetti, Jenni Fagan, Vesna Lemaić, Emir Imamović Pirke, Robert Menasse, Jon McGregor, Damir Uzunović, Tommy Wieringa and Kristine Želve, and along with them those born under the lucky star (you guessed it right: Croatian writers!) – Zoran Ferić, Drago Glamuzina, Marko Gregur, Srećko Horvat, Maja Hrgović, Senko Karuza, Davor Mandić, Zoran Pilić, Edo Popović, Ivana Simić Bodrožić, Želimir Periš... But despite this plenty – this is not all. Once again the FESS is taking its writers to a beautiful place (thank you, Šibenik!), once again it starts a translation workshop (in Brazilian literature), once again it brings the short story together with artists from another media (video workshop), once again we’re cooking and reading, discussing and presenting books, playing football… and with all that,
in this 13th year, in partnership with InYourPocket and the writers’ residency in Ventspils (Latvia), we started our short story competition that takes Croatian writers to the Festival and the Baltic… So, can you – I ask – eliminate that festival car from the race, let go of that building for next to nothing, not press that number on the console and not insist on that room – not take that flight into the literary universe, into a story? No, we do not let our thirteens slip. And you? See you at the Festival of the European Short Story.

MARICA BODROŽIĆ (NJEMAČKA) rođena je 1973. u Zadvarju u Dalmaciji. Rano djetinjstvo provela je u Hercegovini i Dalmaciji, a 1983. seli u Njemačku, gdje uči njemački, koji danas smatra svojim drugim materinskim jezikom i koji je ujedno jezik njezina stvaralaštva. Marica Bodrožić piše eseje o Danilu Kišu, Marini Cvetajevoj, Dubravki Ugrešić, Anne Sexton, Nazimu Himketu i mnogima drugima, objavljuje romane, poeziju i kratke priče, bavi se književnim prevođenjem te je na njemački prevela romane Igora Štiksa i Mirka Kovača, podučava kreativno pisanje, a, među ostalim, snimila je i dokumentarni film. Objavila je zbirke priča Tito ist tot (Tito je mrtav, 2002) i Der Windsammler (2008), pjesničke zbirke Ein Kolibri kam unverwandelt (2007), Lichtorgeln (2008) i Quittenstunden (2011) te romane Der Spieler der inneren Stunde (Tišina, rastanak, 2005), Das Gedächtnis der Libellen (Sjećanje libela, 2010) i Kirschholz und alte Gefühle (2012). Dobitnica je mnogih nagrada i priznanja, uključujući nagradu Hermann Lenz 2001. godine, Initiativpreis Deutsche Sprache za doprinos njemačkom jeziku 2008, posebnu nagradu zaklade Bruno Heck 2009, državnu nagradu Liechtensteina za poeziju 2011. i nagradu LiteraTour Nord 2013. godine. She spent her early childhood in Herzegovina and Dalmatia, and in 1983 she moved to Germany where she learned German, which now she sees as her second mother tongue and also the language of her literature. Her latest novel Kirscholz und alte Gefühle won the European Union Prize for Literature in 2013. Marica Bodrožić lives in Berlin and Paris as a professional writer.
JOÃO LUIS ANZANELLO CARRASCOZA (BRAZIL) rođen je 1962. u Cravinhosu, gradiću u državi São Paulo. Pisac je i professor na Sveučilišu u São Paulu. Prvi roman objavio je još 1991. godine, nakon čega slijede zbirke priča Dias raros, O volume do silêncio, Espinhos e alfinetes, Amores mínimos, Aquela água toda i druge. Priče su mu prevođene na engleski, francuski, talijanski, španjolski i švedski. Bio je stipendist spisateljskih rezidencija i programa u SAD-u (Ledig House), Švicarskoj (Le Château de Lavigny) i Indiji (Sangam House). He published his first novel, As flores da lado de Baixo, back in 1991 and then released story collections Dias raros, O volume do silêncio, Espinhos e alfinetes, Amores mínimos, and Aquela água toda, among others. His stories have been translated into English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish. He has participated in the writers resident programs in the US (Ledig House), Switzerland (Le Château de Lavigny) and India (Sangam House). PAOLO COGNETTI (ITALIJA) rođen je 1978. u Milanu. Studirao je matematiku, ali diplomu je stekao kao scenarist nakon studija filma u Milanu, da bi zatim postao suosnivačem nezavisne produkcijske kuće Cameracar. Radio je kao snimatelj, montažer i scenarist na više dokumentaraca društvene, političke i književne tematike: Vietato scappare, Isbam, Box, La notte del leone, Rumore di fondo. Književnu karijeru započinje dvjema pripovjednim zbirkama: Manuale per ragazze di successo (2004) i Una cosa piccola che sta per esplodere (2007), a nastavlja je romanom Sofia veste sempre di nero (2012). Druga zbirka osvojila je dvije književne nagrade (Premio Fucini, Premio Settembrini), a roman je 2013. ušao u finale ugledne nagrade Premio Campiello. Nakon višekratnih boravaka u New Yorku snimio je dokumentarni serijal o njujorškim piscima Scrivere/New York, a 2010. objavio je i literarni vodič po New Yorku pod naslovom New York è una finestra senza tende. PAOLO COGNETTI (ITALY) was born in 1978 in Milano. He studied mathematics, but then earned his degree in screenwriting from Milano Film School, only to become one of the cofounders of Cameracar Independent Productions. He worked as a camera operator, film
editor or screenwriter on a number of documentaries engaging in social, political or literary topics: Vietato scappare, Isbam, Box, La note del leone, Rumore di fondo. His literary career began with two collections of stories, Manuale per ragazze di successo (2004) and Una cosa piccolo che sta per esplodere (2007), and continued with his 2012 novel Sofia veste sempre di nero. His second collection won two literary prizes (Premi Fucini and Premio Settembrini), while his novel was shortlisted for the distinguished Premio Campiello Award. Having spent time in New York on multiple occasions, he made a documentary series on New York writers called Scrivere/New York, while in 2010 he published a literary guide about New York City called New York è una finestra senza tende. In 2013, he published a diary on spending time alone in the mountains called Il ragazzo selvatico. Pisao je kronike za ugledne brazilske časopise poput “Tribuna da Imprensa”, “Jornal do Brasil”, “Revista TPM” i “O Globo”. Od 2009. suradnik je televizijskog programa Estúdio i. Britanski časopis “Granta” uvrstio ga je među 20 najboljih mladih brazilskih pisaca. Objavio je tri romana – Corpo presente (2003), O Dia Mastroianni (2007) i O único final feliz para uma história de amor é um acidente (2012) – te zbirku priča i kolumni A última madrugada (2012). JENNI FAGAN (UK/ŠKOTSKA) spisateljica je i pjesnikinja. Njezin romaneskni prvijenac The Panopticon iznimno je dobro primljen od kritike te mu je “The New York Times” nedavno posvetio naslovnicu. The Panopticon je preveden na osam jezika, ušao je u uži izbor za nagrade Desmond Elliot i James Tait Black te je nominiran za nagradu Dublin Impac. Jenni Fagan trenutačno završava scenarij za film koji će producirati Sweet Sixteen Films, a režirati Jim Loach. Snimanje filma počinje ujesen. Dobitnica je nekoliko priznanja za svoje pjesničke zbirke, među ostalim nagrade 3AM za pjesničku knjigu godine, a dvaput je nominirana za prestižnu nagradu Pushcart. JENNI FAGAN (SCOTLAND) is an author and poet from Scotland. Her debut novel The Panopticon was received to extraordinary critical acclaim and recently featured as the full front page of The New York Times. The Panopticon is translated into eight languages, it has been shortlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize, the James Tait Black Prize and longlisted for the Dublin Impac Award. Jenni is currently completing the film script and filming on the movie is anticipated to begin this autumn. Sweet Sixteen Films with Jim Loach are making the film. Jenni has won awards for her two poetry collections including 3AM Poetry Book of the Year and twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She is currently completing a short story collection and has been long-listed for The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Prize for When Words Change the Molecular Composition of Water. In 2013 Jenni was selected as one of the Best Young British Novelists by Granta Magazine, a once in a decade accolade. Jenni is currently Writer In Residence at Edinburgh University. Her second novel The Sunlight Pilgrims will be published next year.
DRAGO GLAMUZINA (HRVATSKA) rođen je u Vrgorcu 1967. godine. Diplomirao je komparativnu književnost i filozofiju na Filozofskom fakultetu u Zagrebu. Radio je kao novinar u “Vjesniku”, zatim kao urednik u “Nacionalu”, od 2003. do 2011. kao glavni urednik u izdavačkoj kući Profil, a od 2011. glavni je urednik u izdavačkoj kući VBZ. Objavio je knjige pjesama Mesari (2001) i Je li to sve (2009), roman Tri (2008) te knjigu izabranih pjesama s fotografijama Stanka Abadžića Sami u toj šumi (2011). Za Mesare je dobio Nagradu “Vladimir Nazor” za knjigu godine i Kvirinovu nagradu za najbolju knjigu pjesama. Ista je zbirka prevedena na njemački, makedonski i slovenski jezik te objavljena u Srbiji. Zbirka Je li to sve objavljena je na makedonskom. Za roman Tri dobio je Nagradu TPortala za najbolji roman 2008. u Hrvatskoj. Osim u Hrvatskoj, Tri je dosad objavljen u Srbiji, Makedoniji i Sloveniji, a upravo je dovršen prijevod na njemački jezik. DRAGO GLAMUZINA (CROATIA) was born in Vrgorac in 1967. He graduated in comparative literature and philosophy from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. He worked as a journalist at Vjesnik, then as an editor at Nacional News Magazine, from 2003 to 2011 as the editor-in-chief at Profil Publishing, while since 2011 he works as the editor-in-chief at VBZ. His publications include books of poetry Mesari (2001) and Je li to sve (2009), a novel Tri (2008), and a book of selected poems called Sami u toj šumi (2011) with photographs by Stanko Abadžić. Mesari won the Vladimir Nazor Book of the Year Award and the Kvirin Prize for the Best Book of Poetry. The same poetry collection was translated into German, Macedonian and Slovene, and published in Serbia. His second book of poetry, Je li to sve, was translated into Macedonian. His novel Tri won
the T-Portal’s Award for the best Croatian novel published in 2008. Besides Croatia, Tri appeared in Serbia, Macedonia and Slovenia while its German translation is forthcoming.
MARKO GREGUR (HRVATSKA) rođen je 1982. u Koprivnici. Piše poeziju i prozu, koje je objavljivao u mnogim časopisima i novinama. Za kratke priče i poeziju nagrađivan je u Hrvatskoj, BiH i Srbiji. Pjesme su mu prevedene na bugarski i ruski. Kratka priča uskoro mu izlazi u američkom časopisu “Glimmer Train”. Objavio je zbirku poezije Lirska grafomanija (2011) i zbirku kratkih priča Peglica u prosincu (2012). Uvršten je u antologiju mladih hrvatskih prozaika Bez vrata, bez kucanja (2012). MARKO GREGUR (CROATIA) was born in Koprivnica in 1982. He is a poet and a writer and his texts have appeared in different journals and newspapers. His short stories and poems won awards in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. His poetry was translated into Bulgarian and Russian, and the American magazine Glimmer Train will soon publish one of his short stories. His publications include poetry collection Lirska grafomanija (2011) and a collection of short stories Peglica u prosincu (2012). Marko Gregur’s work is included in the anthology of young Croatian writers called Bez vrata, bez kucanja (2012).
SREĆKO HORVAT (HRVATSKA), filozof, pisac i aktivist, rođen je 1983. u Osijeku. Dosad je objavio devet knjiga na hrvatskom jeziku, među kojima Protiv političke korektnosti (2007), Diskurs terorizma (2008) i Pažnja! Neprijatelj prisluškuje (2011). Posljednja knjiga, u koautorstvu sa Slavojem Žižekom, Što Europa želi? (2013), prevedena je na desetak jezika i krajem 2014. u proširenom izdanju izlazi u nakladi Columbia University Press. Redovito piše za “Guardian”, “Al Jazeeru” i “New York Times”. SREĆKO HORVAT (CROATIA) is a philosopher, writer and an activist, born in 1983 in Osijek. He has published nine books in Croatian, including Protiv političke koreknosti (2007), Diskurs terorizma (2008), and Pažnja! Neprijatelj prisluškuje (2011). His last book, co-authored with Slavoj Žižek, Što Europa želi? (2013) has been translated in about a dozen languages, and by the end of 2014 Columbia University Press will release its extended edition. Srećko Horvat regularly writes for The Guardian, Al Jazeera and The New York Times.
EMIR IMAMOVIĆ PIRKE (BiH/HRVATSKA), rođen 1973. u Tuzli, novinar je i književnik. Novinarstvom se bavi od 1992. godine te je, među ostalim, bio glavni urednik magazina “Dani” i izvjestitelj s Kosova, iz Makedonije i Afganistana. Autor je triju romana: Jel neko vidio djevojčice, kurve, ratne zločince (2006), Tajna doline piramida (2007) i Treće poluvrijeme (2010), koji je nominiran za Nagradu “Meša Selimović” 2011. godine. Emir Imamović Pirke trenutačno živi u Šibeniku.
EMIR IMAMOVIĆ PIRKE (BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA / CROATIA), born in Tuzla in 1973, is a Bosnian journalist and a writer. He has been working as a journalist since 1992 and, among other things, was the editor of Dani and a war reporter from Kosovo, Macedonia and Afghanistan. He is the author of three novels: Jel neko vidio djevojčice, kurve, ratne zločince (2006), Tajna doline piramida (2007), and Treće poluvrijeme (2010), which was shortlisted for the 2011 Meša Selimović Award. Emir Imamović Pirke currently lives in Šibenik.
VESNA LEMAIĆ (SLOVENIJA) rođena je 1981. i danas živi u Ljubljani. Studirala je komparativnu književnost. Organizira radionice kolektivnog trash pisanja, osnovala je čitateljski klub Anonymous Reader i članica je neformalne inicijative Lezbijskofeminističkog sveučilišta. Aktivna je u gay klubu AKZ Metelkova. Uključena je u borbu protiv kapitalizma i europskih kriznih politika. Kao spisateljica debitirala je 2008. zbirkom kratkih priča Popularne zgodbe, za koju je 2009. primila nagrade Slovenskog sajma knjiga i Zlata ptica, a 2010. nagradu Fabula. Nagrade su, smatra, dobre da popune praznine u biografiji. Godine 2010. objavila je roman Odlagališče. Vjeruje u solidarnost, grassroot pokrete, borbu protiv moći i uvijek je u potrazi za novim idealima. Njezina kratka priča uvrštena je u antologiju Best European Fiction 2014. VESNA LEMAIĆ (SLOVENIA) was born in 1981 and currently lives in Ljubljana. She holds a degree in comparative literature. Besides organizing collective trash writing workshops, she is one of the founders of Anonymous Readers and a member of the Informal Lesbian Feminist University. She is active at a gay club at Metelkova Autonomous Cultural Zone and is involved in the struggle against capitalism and European crisis policies. Vesna Lemaić made her debut in 2008 with Popularne zgodbe. This book of short stories won the 2009 Zlata Ptica Award, the 2009 Slovenian Book Fair Award, and the 2010 Fabula Award. In her opinion, awards are also good for filling up empty spaces in biographies. In 2010, her novel Odlagališče was published. Vesna Lemaić believes in solidarity, grassroots movements, fighting the power relations and is always out hunting for new ideals. Her short story was included in Best European Fiction 2014 Anthology.

Sudjelovala je na uglednim književnim događanjima u Brazilu (Bienal do Rio), Njemačkoj (Berlin), Austriji (Književni forum u Beču), Francuskoj (Festival Belles Latinas) i Grčkoj (Festival iberoameričke književnosti). Kratke priče su joj objavljene u antologijama 25 Mulheres que estão fazendo a nova literatura brasileira (2004) i Sex´n´Bossa (2005). Djela su joj prevedena na njemački, francuski i srpski. DAVOR MANDIĆ (HRVATSKA) rođen je 1976. u Puli. Profesor je hrvatskog jezika i književnosti po profesiji, a novinar Novog lista po zanimanju. Za vrijeme studija počeo je više pisati i objavljivati, što je 2009. urodilo zbirkom poezije Mostovi u izdanju Hrvatskog društva pisaca. Kao i mnogi drugi spisateljski aspirant, napušta poeziju i baca se na kratke priče u nadi da će postati pravi pisac. Pa piše kraće forme, koje su se ove 2014. godine našle i u knjizi priča Valjalo bi me zamisliti sretnim. DAVOR MANDIĆ (CROATIA) was born in 1976 in Pula. He holds a degree in Croatian language and literature and works as a journalist at Novi List. He began writing back in his student days only to have his poetry collection Mostovi published by the Croatian Writers’ Society in 2009. Like many other writing aspirants, he abandoned poetry and dove into short stories in hope that one day he would become a real writer. In the meantime, he is dedicated to short forms, which found their way into his book of stories Valjalo bi me zamisliti sretnim (2014).

Prvi roman, If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things, izašao je 2002, a nakon toga još dva: So Many Ways to Begin (2007) i Even the Dogs (2010). Godine 2012. objavljuje prvu zbirku kratkih priča pod naslovom This Isn’t the Sort of Thing That Happens to Someone Like You. ROBERT MENASSE (AUSTRIJA) rođen je 1954 u Beču. Studirao je germanistiku, filozofiju i politologiju u Beču, Salzburgu i Messini. Za svoj je rad primio mnoga priznanja, uključujući nagrade Heimito von Doderer, Joseph Breitbach, Lion Feuchtwanger, Luise Kaschnitz, Erich Fried i Österreichischer Kunstpreis. Godine 1999. objavio je Der mächtigste Mann u suradnji s Kennethom Kleinom, Elisabeth i Evom Menasse. Među ostalim, objavio je roman Don Juan de la Mancha oder Die Erziehung der Lust (2007) i zbirku kratkih priča Ich kann jeder sagen (2009). He studied German literature, philosophy and political science in Vienna, Salzburg and Messina. For his work he received numerous awards, including the Heimito von Doderer, Joseph Breitbach, Lion Feuchtwanger, Luise Kaschnitz, Erich Fried and Österreichischer Kunstpreis prizes. In 1999, he published Der mächtigste Mann with Kenneth Klein, Elisabeth and Eva Menasse. Among other things, his publications include the novel Don Juan de la Mancha oder Die Erziehung der Lust (2007) and the volume of short stories Ich kann jeder sagen (2009). In 2012, he published Der europäische Landbote (the Friedrich-Ebert Prize and the Heinrich Mann Prize) in which he discusses the future of Europe and the European Union, criticizing tendencies of re-nationalization (especially in Germany, but also elsewhere) and antiEuropean integration movements. In 2013 his play Doktor Hoechst was published. A novelist and essayist, Robert Menasse lives mainly in Vienna.
PAULA PARISOT (BRAZIL) rođena je u Rio de Janeiru, no živi u São Paulu. Diplomirala je industrijski dizajn. Na Sveučilištu u New Yorku kao stipendistica pohađa Likovnu akademiju. Ilustrirala je različite europske i brazilske časopise. Autorica je zbirke priča A dama da solidão (2007) i romana Gonzos e parafusos (2010). Priče su joj objavljene u Americi, Kolumbiji i Meksiku. Posljednji roman Partir (2013) inspirirao je autoricu na niz od četiri performansa. Urednica je antologije brazilskih priča A invenção da realidade objavljene 2013.
PAULA PARISOT (BRAZIL) was born in Rio de Janeiro, but she lives in São Paolo. She holds a degree in industrial design and she studied at New York University’s Arts Academy. As an illustrator, she worked with a number of European and Brazilian magazines. She is the author of a short story collection A dama da solidão (2007) and a novel Gonzos e parafusos (2010). Her stories were published in the U.S., Columbia and Mexico. Her last novel, Partir (2013), inspired the author to a series of four performances. Paula Parisot is the editor of
an anthology of Brazilian short stories A invenção da realidade published in 2013.
ŽELIMIR PERIŠ (HRVATSKA) rođen je 1975. u Zadru. Član je udruge ZaPis – Zadarski pisci – s kojima u Zadru organizira književne večeri i vodi radionice kreativnog pisanja Otpis. Suradnik je Centra za kreativno pisanje iz Zagreba s kojim organizira Ljetnu školu pisanja u Staroj Sušici. Jedan je od organizatora književnog festivala KaLibar u Zadru. Priče, drame i poeziju objavio je u više književnih časopisa i nekoliko zbornika proze. Za priče i poeziju osvojio je više književnih nagrada, među kojima su Lapis Histriae (Umag 2012), PitchWise (Sarajevo 2012) i Ulaznica (Zrenjanin 2012). Priče su mu prevedene na talijanski i ukrajinski. Godine 2013. objavio je je knjigu priča Mučenice. ŽELIMIR PERIŠ (CROATIA) was born in 1975 in Zadar. He is a member of ZaPis – Zadarski pisci, an association of Zadar based writers, where he organizes literary events and runs creative writing workshops called Otpis. He works with the Center for Creative Writing in Zagreb and organizes Creative Writing Summer School in Stara Sušica. Also, he is one of the organizers of Kalibar Festival of Literature in Zadar. His stories, plays and poems were published in several literary magazines and included in prose anthologies. For his short stories and poetry, he won several awards, among others Lapis Histriea (Umag, 2012), PitchWise (Sarajevo, 2012), and Ulaznica (Zrenjanin, 2012). His stories were translated into Italian and Ukrainian. In 2013, his collection of stories called Mučenice was published.

Objavio dvije zbirke priča, Doggiestyle (2007) i Nema slonova u Meksiku (2014), dva romana, Krimskrams (2009) i Đavli od papira (2011), i zbirku poezije Dendermonde (2013). ZORAN PILIĆ (CROATIA) was born in 1966 in Zagreb. He worked at a video store, road maintenance company, Center for Autism in Zagreb, as well as for Motovun Film Festival and Zagreb Film Festival. DAMIR UZUNOVIĆ (BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA) rođen je 1965. u Sarajevu. Dosad je objavio tri knjige pjesama, Brod sa talismanom (1992), Mađioničar (1995) i Ljudi i ptice (2005) te knjigu priča Kesten (1996). Direktor je sarajevske knjižare i izdavačke kuće Buybook, gdje također radi kao urednik. DAMIR UZUNOVIĆ (BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA) was born in Sarajevo in 1965. His publications include three books of poems, Brod sa talismanom (1992), Mađioničar (1995), and Ljudi i ptice (2005), and a book of stories called Kesten (1996). He is the director of Buybook, a Sarajevo based bookstore and publishing house, where he works as an editor.

TOMMY WIERINGA (NIZOZEMSKA), rođen 1967. godine, napisao je Alles over Tristan (2002), a zatim i knjigu koja mu je omogućila proboj do šire publike, Joe Speedboat (2005; prodana u 350.000 primjeraka, prevedena na 15 jezika). Njegove putopisne priče skupljene su u zbirci Ik was nooit in Isfahaan (2006). Godine 2007. objavio je De dynamica van begeerte, studiju o podrijetlu žudnje i ulozi pornografije u modernom svijetu. Njegov Cesarion (2007) “Le Figaro” je usporedio s djelima Roberta Bolaña, Philipa Rotha i W. G. Sebalda, a knjiga je ušla u uži izbor za nagradu IMPAC Dublin. Dit zijn de namen (2012; preko 150.000 prodanih primjeraka) njegov je najnoviji roman, za koji je dobio nagradu Libris, zbog čega je morao ispuniti obećanje i skočiti u rijeku Amstel. TOMMY WIERINGA (THE NETHERLANDS), born in 1967, wrote Alles over Tristan (Everything About Tristan, 2002), and then the book that propelled his breakthrough to wide audience, Joe Speedboat (2005, 350,000 copies sold, published in 15 languages). His
travel stories were collected in Ik was nooit in Isfahaan (I Never Went to Isfahan, 2006). In 2007, his De dynamica van begeerte (The Dynamics of Desire) was published, a study into the origins of desire and the major role of pornography in the modern world. Le Figaro compared his Caesarion (Little Ceasar, 2007) to the works of Roberto Bolaño, Philip Roth and W.G. Sebald and it was shortlisted for the IMPAC Dublin Prize. Dit zijn de namen (These Are the Names, 2012, over 150,000 copies sold) is his most recent novel that won the 2013 Libris Prize, which made him keep his promise and take a dip in the Amstel. KRISTĪNE ŽELVE (LATVIJA) redateljica je i spisateljica, rođena 1970. godine. Studirala je filmsku režiju i menadžment u kulturi na Latvijskoj kulturnoj akademiji. Snimila je nekoliko dokumentarnih filmova i video radova. Surađuje s različitim latvijskim medijima i uređuje program o kulturi na latvijskoj televiziji. Njezina prva knjiga, zbirka kratkih priča Meitene, Kas Nogrieza Man Matus, objavljena je 2011. i nagrađena godišnjom nagradom za kulturu za najbolji prvijenac te godišnjom nagradom za kulturu dnevnih novina “Diena”. KRISTĪNE ŽELVE (LATVIA), a film director and a writer, was born in 1970. She has studied film directing and cultural management at the Latvian Academy of Culture. She has made several documentary films and videos, she regularly contributes to various Latvian media and runs the broadcast on culture on Latvian Television. Her first book, a collection of short stories Meitene, Kas Nogrieza Man Matus (The Girl Who Cut My Hair), was published in 2011 and it was awarded the Annual Prize for Literature for the best debut and the Annual Prize for Culture by Diena, Latvian daily newspaper.
BAIBA KOMENCA (LATVIJA) članica je organizacijskog odbora festivala Prozas lasījumi (Prozna čitanja). Stekla je magisterij iz područja humanistike i završila preddiplomski studij poslovne organizacije i menadžmenta. Radi na nekoliko književnih i izdavačkih projekata te je koordinatorica programa razmjene i odnosa s javnošću festivala Prozas lasījumi. BAIBA KOEMECA (LATVIA) is the member of the organizing committee of Prozas lasījumi, an annual festival of literature organized by the Latvian Literature Center. She obtained her master’s degree in the humanities and a bachelor’s degree in business organization and management. She works on several literary and publishing projects and serves as the exchange program coordinator and public relations officer at Prozas lasījumi.
MARIKA PAPĒDE (LATVIJA) od 1997. bavi se organiziranjem različitih kulturnih i književnih događanja. Od 2006. godine direktorica je književnog festivala Prozas lasījumi u organizaciji Latvijskog književnog centra. Studira na Latvijskoj kulturnoj akademiji i radi kao izvršna direktorica netom otvorene Koncertne dvorane Daile u Rigi. MARIKA PAPĒDE (LATVIA) has worked on organizing different cultural and literary events since 1997. Since 2006, she is the director of the Prozas lasījumi, an annual festival of literature organized by the Latvian Literature Centre. A student at the Latvian Academy of Culture, she works as the executive director of the newly opened Daile Music Hall in Riga.
NJI3 dizajnerski je kolektiv koji čine Tessa Bacharach-Krištofić, Dina Milovčić i Franka Tretinjak, studentice diplomskog studija dizajna pri Arhitektonskom fakultetu u Zagrebu. NJI3 izlagale su na brojnim izložbama (EDUZGRAF, Izložba hrvatskog dizajna 1112, Fotogrami, Tri generacije: Bacharach i Krištofić,), sudjelovale su na radionicama ili ih same vodile (Studij dizajna – Špancirfest u Varaždinu, Arhiv TD, TV Student, Dizajner: autor ili univerzalni vojnik, Pokreni sirup, C.R.T.A., Ljetna škola arhitekture i dizajna u Motovunu, Centar za ženske studije), stvarale su vizualne identitete (KRADU – festival Akademije dramskih umjetnosti, Dan D, TV Student) te primale nagrade za svoj rad (među ostalim, nagrade Small Promos i Silver Bra Međunarodnog festivala kreativnih komunikacija Magdalena te nagradu Hrvatskog dizajnerskog društva za najbolji dizajn vizualnih komunikacija u studentskoj kategoriji). NJI3 bave se dizajnom u svim njegovim tiskanim i virtualnim oblicima. NJI3 is the designer collective comprised of Tessa Bacharach-Krištović, Dina Milovčić and Franka Tretinjak, graduate students at the School of Design at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb. NJI3 showcased their work at exhibitions (EDUZGRAF, 1112 – the Exhibition of Croatian Design, Fotogrami, Three Generations: Bacharach and Krištofić), ran or participated in workshops (School of Design – Špancirfest in Varaždin, Arhiv TD, TV Student, Designer: Author or Universal Soldier, Pokreni sirup, C.R.T.A., Summer School of Architecture and Design in Motovun, Center for Women’s Studies), created visual identities (KRADU – festival of the Academy of Dramatic Arts, Dan D, TV Student), and received awards for their work (among others, Small Promos and Silver Bra awards at “Magdalena” Festival of Creative Communication as well as the Croatian Designers Society’s Award for the best visual communication design in the student category). Programi / Programs Brazil, zemlja partner Kao što književnost živi od prekoračivanja granica, tako se i Festival europske kratke priče ne zadržava samo na Starom kontinentu, nego nas u potrazi za iznimnim pričama, uvijek novim svjetovima i književnim partnerstvima ove godine vodi sve do Brazila! Lista najboljih mladih brazilskih autora u posebnom izdanju utjecajnog časopisa “Granta” i poziv Brazilu da na posljednjem Sajmu knjiga u Frankfurtu bude počasni gost, potvrdili su pojavu brazilofilije u književnim krugovima – nezasitne strasti za putovanjima u imaginarni Brazil koju ćemo iskusiti i zadovoljiti na 13. izdanju FEKP-a. Kao i uvijek, FEKP prati ali i kreira književne trendove dovodeći mlade pisce koji su zvijezde ne samo na domaćem terenu nego i na svjetskim festivalima; pisce koji obilježavaju antologije i duh vremena, osvajajući redom i nagrade i čitatelje. Našu želju da svojim pričama osvoje i
hrvatsku publiku (jer nas već jesu!) prepoznali su i podržali Zaklada nacionalne biblioteke i Ministarstvo kulture Brazila – hvala vam! Sa sjajnim, poznatim i priznatim Joãom Anzanellom Carrascozom, Joãom Paulom Cuencom, Anom Paulom Maia i Paulom Parisot družit ćemo se na čitanjima i razgovorima, prevoditeljskoj radionici i susretu s hrvatskim nakladnicima, urednicima i prevoditeljima, a naći ćemo vremena i za nogometni okršaj! Sve kako bismo ispunili cilj najprijateljskijeg domaćeg književnog festivala: da se naši gosti osjećaju kao kod kuće, a da se domaći čitatelji osjećaju kao da su na putovanju!
Brazil, Partner Country Just as literature lives from crossing boundaries, the Festival of the European Short Story does not limit itself only to the Old Continent, but, in the search for exceptional stories, new worlds and literary partnerships, this year it takes us all the way to Brazil! The list of the best young Brazilian authors in the special edition of Granta Magazine and the invitation to Brazil as a Guest of Honor at the 2013 Frankfurt Book Fair only added to the emergence of brazilophilia in literary circles – the insatiable passion for traveling to imaginary Brazil that we will experience and satisfy at the 13 th edition of the FESS. As always, the FESS follows, but also creates, literary trends by bringing young authors who are stars not only in their home field, but also at world-known festivals; writers that mark anthologies and the spirit of the time by winning both awards and readers. Our wish to let them and their stories conquer the Croatian audience (for they have already won us over!) was recognized and supported by Brazil’s National Library Foundation and Brazilian Ministry of Culture – thank you! The fantastic, the well-known and well-recognized João Anzanello Carrascoza, João Paulo Cuenca, Ana Paula Maia and Paula Parisot will join us at readings and conversations, in our translation workshop and at the meeting with Croatian publishers, editors and translators, and there will be time for some serious footballing! All this to meet the goal of the friendliest literary festival in Croatia – to make our guests feel at home and make our Croatian readers feel as if on a journey!
Natječaj za kratku priču: FEKP & In Your Pocket! Jedan džep i jedno “ti” – to je sve što je potrebno priči, ono što svi imamo, o čemu znamo sve i ne znamo ništa: zametak tajne, početak putovanja. Jer džepovi, pa čak i oni koje poznajemo kao vlastite, mogu skrivati bilo što, a kratka priča oduvijek je voljela putovanja koja vode u blizinu.
Festival europske kratke priče i gradski vodič InYourPocket pokreću natječaj za kratku priču na temu U tvome džepu. Žiri sastavljen od pisaca, urednika, novinara i književnih kritičara proglasit će najuspješnije priče na večernjem čitanju FEKP-a, a dobitnik/ca prve nagrade bit će nagrađen/a dvotjednim boravkom u baltičkoj rezidenciji za pisce (Ventspils, Latvija, www.ventspilshouse.lv) i nastupom na završnoj večeri FEKP-a.
Short Story Competition: FESS & InYourPocket! One pocket and one “you” – that’s all a story needs: something we all have, something we know everything and nothing about – an inception of a mystery, a start of a journey. Because all pockets, even those we know and recognize as our own, can hide anything, and the short story always loved journeys that take us somewhere close. The Festival of the European Short Story and InYourPocket opened a short story competition with the topic of In Your Pocket. A jury of writers, editors, journalists and literary critics will announce the most successful stories at one of the FESS’s readings, and the winner of the competition will be awarded a two-week stay at the Baltic residency for writers (Ventspils, Latvia, http://www.ventspilshouse.lv) and a reading at the last evening of the FESS.
Prevoditeljska radionica iz brazilske književnosti Pokrenute kao pokušaj da se mladim i budućim prevoditeljima približe suvremeni svjetski autori, festivalske su prevodilačke radionice svake godine posvećene književnosti zemlje partnera. Uz izlaganja gostujućih pisaca, rad na tekstovima i predavanja ponajboljih hrvatskih prevodilaca, najuspješnijim se polaznicima objavljuju prijevodi i dodjeljuju stipendije ili nagrade. Pod mentorstvom Nine Lanović, ove je godine održana prevoditeljska radionica iz brazilske književnosti za zagrebačke studente portugalskog jezika i književnosti Filozofskog fakulteta u Zagrebu.
Brazilian Literature Translation Workshop Started with the idea to bring contemporary European writers closer to young, aspiring translators, the Festival of the European Short Story organizes translation workshops dedicated to literatures of partner countries. Besides talks and readings by our guest writers, intensive work on texts, and lectures by some of the best Croatian translators, we publish the best translations and award stipends or prizes to the most accomplished participants of our workshop. Mentored by Nina Lanović, this year’s workshop, organized for the students of Portugese language and literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, focused on contemporary Brazilian literature.
Antologije europske kratke priče Zamišljen kao prilika da se u sredini koja je izgubila korak s novim europskim književnim imenima obnovi, a u nekim slučajevima i začne sustavno predstavljanje proze europskih pisaca mlađe generacije, ali i starijih autora koji su na njih znatnije utjecali, projekt Antologije europske kratke priče hrvatskom je čitatelju ponudio uvid u najnovija strujanja u suvremenoj europskoj proznoj produkciji. Do danas je objavljeno 18 antologija kratke priče: francuske, nizozemske, hrvatske, njemačke, norveške, slovenske, poljske, srpske, talijanske, mađarske, austrijske, litavske, češke i irske, uključujući posebna izdanja: antologije kanadske, kubanske, australske i kratke priče Commonwealtha. Svoj 10. rođendan FEKP je proslavio antologijom Festival! Antologija europske kratke priče (ur. Roman Simić Bodrožić, Profil, 2011) u kojoj su predstavljeni domaći i strani pisci, gosti i prijatelji u čijim smo tekstovima kroz sve ove godine otkrivali užitak čitanja i slušanja.
Anthologies of the European Short Story Imagined as an opportunity to promote the work of younger European writers, as well as the work of those who influenced them, in a culture that has somehow lost track of the contemporary European literary names, the project Anthologies of the European Short Story offers to the Croatian readers an insight into the most recent trends in the European prose production. Up until now 18 short story anthologies have been published: French, Dutch, Croatian, German, Norwegian, Slovenian, Polish, Serbian, Italian, Hungarian, Austrian, Czech, Lithuanian, and Irish, with special editions of Canadian, Cuban, Australian and the short stories of the Commonwealth. FESS celebrated its 10 th birthday by publishing “Festival! Antologija europske kratke priče” (Festival! An Anthology of the European Short Story, ed. Roman Simić Bodrožić, Profil, 2011) that presented both Croatian and foreign writers, our guests and friends whose texts helped us discover the pleasure of reading and listening.
Hrvatski pisci kuhaju Jedan od najozbiljnijih kandidata za titulu piscima najdražeg festivalskog događanja tradicionalna je fešta dobrodošlice na kojoj domaći autori otvaraju vrata svoje književne i ine kuhinje. Izbor delicija dostojno sažima Festival europske kratke priče: ukusno i kvalitetno, maštovito i osobno! Okosnicu hrvatskog književno-kulinarskog tima gotovo od samih početaka Festivala tvore Senko Karuza, Zoran Ferić, Robert Mlinarec i Ivica Prtenjača. Kuharska ispomoć, kao i inspiracija, dosad je prelazila i međudržavne i žanrovske granice, a rezultati su uvijek bili veličanstveni, pa ne sumnjamo da će ove godine biti išta manje slasno!
Croatian Writers Cooking One of the most serious contenders for the title of the most popular festival event among the writers is our traditional welcome feast where Croatian authors open the door to their literary and all other types of cuisine. The choice of delicious treats serves as a praiseworthy summary of the Festival of the European Short Story: tasty and refined, creative and personal! The backbone of the Croatian literary-culinary team almost from the very beginnings of FESS is made of Senko Karuza, Zoran Ferić, Robert Mlinarec and Ivica Prtenjača. Their sous chefs, their helping hands as well as their inspiration, have until now crossed all international and genre boundaries, and the results have always been glorious, so there is no reason to suspect that this year it will be any less appetizing!
Kratke videopriče Književnost, navodno kao šesta umjetnost, voli zakoračiti u vode sedme – koliko su puta romani i drame ekranizirani, kratke priče također. Tako i FEKP hrabro umače nožne prste u celuloidne vode. Potoci i rijeke naših (kratkih) priča prelijevaju se u pokretne slike; brazilski tukani, zagrebački golubovi i šibenski galebovi vode nas kroz čaroban svijet FEKP-a, kroz njegove priče i pričice, upoznaju nas s njegovim gostima iz svih kutaka Europe i svijeta – sada i na filmskom platnu. Dizajnerski kolektiv NJI3 (Tessa BacharachKrištofić, Dina Milovčić i Franka Tretinjak) i on, Vedran Kasap, profesor na Studiju dizajna Arhitektonskog fakulteta u Zagrebu, spajaju šestu i sedmu i tko zna koje još umjetnosti te nam donose Kratke videopriče FEKP-a. Short Video Stories Literature, supposedly as the sixth art, likes to venture into the waters of the seventh art – how many times have novels and plays been turned to screen, short stories too – and thus the FESS is ready to valiantly dip its toes into the celluloid waters. Streams and rivers of our (short) stories spill over into moving images; the toucans of Brazil, the pigeons of Zagreb, and the seagulls of Šibenik take us on a journey through the magical world of the FESS, through its big and small stories, they introduce us to its guests from all corners of Europe and the world – now on the movie screen too. NJI3 Designer Collective (Tessa Bacharach-Krištofić, Dina Milovčić and Franka Tretinjak) and he, Vedran Kasap, professor at the School of Design at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb, combine the sixth and the seventh and who knows which other forms of art and bring us FESS’s Short Video Stories.
4. Suradnja / Cooperation Sjajni brazilski potoci
Ponekad nas najkraći put do opisa nečega što je i samo kratko vodi zaobilaznicom: bonsai je najlakše opisati ako ga usporedimo s borom. Tako je i s kratkom pričom. Usporedimo li je s romanom, uočit ćemo razlike, ali ponajprije će na vidjelo izaći njezina jedinstvenost. Za E. M. Forstera roman je pripovjedni oblik kroz koji teku priče-rijeke. Nastavljajući se na tu sliku, za kratku priču možemo reći da je ona potok. Između uskih obala čitav je svijet: priča-potok ide svojim tokom, a na površini se odražavaju nebo i krajolik. Teritorijalno prostranstvo Brazila vidljivo je i u njegovoj književnosti, naplavljenoj dugim rijekama i sjajnim potocima. Da, naši veliki pisci nisu se udaljili od potoka. Machado de Assis je, osim izvrsnih romana, napisao preko stotinu prvoklasnih kratkih priča. Guimarães Rosa ostavio nam je roman
Grande sertão: veredas (Velika divljina: Putevi), ali i prekrasne kratke priče. Isto vrijedi i za Clarice Lispector. I Raduana Nassara. I Graciliana Ramosa. Jorge Amado i Erico Verissimo, obojica vrsni romanopisci, ponekad su zaplivali u kratkoproznim vodama. Čak se i pjesnik Carlos Drummond de Andrade pridružio kraćoj struji svojim Contos Plausíveis (Vjerojatne priče). Nismo još ni spomenuli genijalne pisce poput Daltona Trevisana i njegov književni opus koji gotovo isključivo počiva na kratkoj priči, pri čemu dijeli sličnosti s Alice Munro, prošlogodišnjom dobitnicom Nobelove nagrade za književnost. Nagnuti nad kartom Brazila, zamišljajući književnost jučer i danas, otkrit ćemo brojna čudesa u mreži rijeka i potoka. Srećom, Festival europske kratke priče omogućava prikaz snage, složenosti i raznovrsne ljepote brazilske kratke priče, koju ovdje predstavljaju Ana Paula Maia, João Paulo Cuenca, Paula Parisot i moja malenkost. Opus ove grupe izraz je urbanog i ruralnog, modernog i arhaičnog, svjetovnog i globalnog, epskog i lirskog, stvarnosti naše zemlje i našega društvenog imaginarija. Splendid Brazilian Streams Sometimes the shortest way to the description of something that is in itself short takes us on a bypass: easiest way to describe a bonsai is to compare it to a pine tree. The same goes for the short story. If we compare it to the novel, we will notice the differences, but, most of all, its singularity will come out into the open. E. M. Forster said that the novel is a narrative form through which many river-stories flow. Picking up on his metaphor, we could imagine the short story as a stream. Within its narrow banks, an entire world lies – the story-stream flows down its course with the sky and the landscape reflected in it. Territorial vastness of Brazil is reflected in its literature as well, fed by long rivers and splendid streams. Yes, our great writers never distanced themselves from the stream. Apart from his excellent novels, Machado de Assis wrote over a hundred of first-rate short stories. Guimarães Rosa left us Grande sertão: veredas (The Devil to Pay in the Backlands), but also wonderful short stories. The same is true of Clarice Lispector. And of Raduan Nassar. And of Graciliano Ramos. Jorge Amado and Erico Verissimo, both exceptional novelists, sometimes went for a swim in short-fiction waters. Even the poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade joined the short stream with his Contos Plausíveis (Plausible Stories). We have not even mentioned some brilliant writers, such as, Dalton Trevisan, whose literary oeuvre is almost entirely based on short stories, similar to Alice Munro, last year's winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Leaning over the map of Brazil, imagining literature today and yesterday, we will discover many wonders in the network of rivers and streams. Luckily, the Festival of the European Short Story has provided an opportunity to showcase the power, complexity and diverse beauty of the Brazilian short story, represented by Ana Paula Maia, João Paulo Cuenca, Paula Parisot and myself. This group's work is an expression of urban and rural, modern and archaic, worldly and worldwide, epic and lyrical, the reality of our country and our social imaginarium. Književnost bez granica (LAF) europska je platforma za književnu razmjenu, program inicijativa te mreža partnerskih organizacija čiji je cilj unaprijediti europsku kulturnu razmjenu na području književnosti i prevođenja kroz multilateralnu suradnju, koja uključuje istraživanja kulturne politike kao i publikacije, osposobljavanje prevoditelja te unapređenje njihovih vještina, zajedničko sudjelovanje na međunarodnim sajmovima knjiga, književnim festivalima i drugim forumima, organizaciju većih projekata, konferencija i radionica. LAF želi potaknuti interkulturalni dijalog kroz književnost i prijevode unutar Europske unije te u susjednim zemljama i u mediteranskoj regiji. LAF olakšava pristup manje poznatim književnostima, pogotovo onima na manje rasprostranjenim europskim jezicima, te književnostima koje nisu dovoljno predstavljene na međunarodnoj sceni, i time potiče veću raznovrsnost međunarodnih književnih događanja i objavljivanje književnosti za sve uzraste. Također se bavi razvojem inovativnih pristupa književnoj kreativnosti, promocijom i potporom prevođenju kao i osposobljavanjem književnih prevoditelja za jezike koji se rjeđe koriste. LAF djeluje kao katalizator novih multilateralnih kontakata, suradnji i inovativnih projekata koji dovode književnost u interakciju s drugim formama umjetničkog izraza te istražuju socijalnu i političku ulogu pisanja. Literature Across Frontiers (LAF) is the European platform for literary exchange, a program of initiatives and a network of partner organizations whose goal is to improve and expand European cultural exchange in the field of literature and translation through multilateral cooperation encompassing cultural policy research as well as publications, translator training and skills development, joint participation in international book fairs, literature festivals and other forums, organization of larger-scale projects, as well as conferences, seminars and workshops. LAF wishes to foster intercultural dialogue through literature and translation within the EU, its neighbors and the Mediterranean countries. LAF’s activities allow access to lesser-known literatures, particularly those written in the less widely used languages of Europe and those underrepresented in the international arena; and by doing so it encourages greater diversity in international literary events and in the publishing of literature for all age groups. It also works on the development of innovative approaches to literary creation, promotion, support for translation and training of literary translators working in less widely used languages. LAF acts as a catalyst for new multilateral contacts, collaborations and innovative projects bringing literature into interaction with other forms of artistic expression and exploring the social and political role of writing.
Prozas lasījumi i Međunarodna kuća pisaca i prevoditelja U poticanju književnog stvaranja ove nam se godine pridružuju i projekti iz Latvije s kojima dijelimo viziju razmjene kao ključnog uvjeta za razvoj književnosti. Prozas lasījumi (Prozna čitanja) festival je na kojem latvijski i inozemni pisci predstavljaju i pred publikom testiraju svoja najsvježija, još neobjavljena djela. Međunarodna kuća pisaca i
prevoditelja u jednom od najatraktivnijih baltičkih gradova, Ventspilsu, ugošćuje one kojima je pravi dom jezik, preko rezidencijalnih programa i stipendija omogućava im ekskluzivno vrijeme za kreativni rad te promiče međukulturni dijalog i afirmaciju autora izvan granica njihovih matičnih književnosti. Dvotjedni boravak u Latviji prva je nagrada ovogodišnjeg FEKP-ova natječaja za kratku priču, čime se učvršćuje književna veza između latvijskih prijatelja i našega festivala.
Prozas lasījumi and International Writers’ and Translators’ House In our quest for promoting literary creation, this year we are joined by two Latvian projects with which we share the vision of exchange as the key condition for the development of literature. Prozas lasījumi (Prose Readings) is an annual festival during which Latvian writers and their foreign guests present their most recent, yet unpublished works and test it in front of an audience. International Writers’ and Translators’ House in Ventspils, one of the most beautiful cities on the Baltic, hosts those whose real home is language. The residency programs and stipends offer an exclusive time for creative literary work and advocate intercultural dialog and author’s affirmation outside of their home literatures. A two-week residency in Latvia is the first prize of FESS’s short story competition and a step toward a firmer literary connection between our Latvian friends and our festival.
Kultura promjene Od 2005. godine Studentski centar razvija novu koncepciju kulturnih programa pod nazivom Kultura promjene, slijedeći tako samu bit SC-a kao kulturnog i društvenog središta studenata obilježenog smjenama generacija i njihovih interesa. Kroz glazbeni (Muzički salon), likovni (Galerija SC), kazališni (Teatar &TD), filmski (Kino SC i MM centar) i radijski sektor, Kultura promjene ostvaruje niz zanimljivih projekata, radionica, koncerata, festivala, u kojima posjetitelji mogu uživati tijekom cijeloga tjedna. S ciljem aktivnog i sustavnog uključivanja studenata u kreiranje programa u prostorima SC-a, tijekom cijele godine otvoren je Non-stop natječaj na koji studenti, studentske udruge, udruge koje promoviraju urbanu i kulturu mladih mogu prijaviti edukativne, multidisciplinarne, multimedijalne i progresivne projekte. Svi prihvaćeni projekti besplatno dobivaju prostor za realizaciju svojega programa, tehničku pomoć te organizacijsku pomoć djelatnika Kulture promjene. Na taj su način u SC-u održani Festival doživljaj, festival indijske kulture Put do Indije, festival popularne književnosti Kliker! i još mnogo toga.
The Culture of Change
Since 2005, Student Center Zagreb develops a new conception of the cultural program called the Culture of Change, which follows the main activity of the center as a central point of student cultural and social life characterized by the change of generations and their interests. Within its music (Music Salon), visual arts (Gallery SC), theatre (Theatre &TD), film (Cinema SC and Multimedia Centre) and radio programs, the Culture of Change organizes a number of projects, workshops, concerts and festivals open to visitors every day of the week. Its goal being an active and systematic incorporation of students into the creation of programs within the Student Centre, it features a Non-Stop Competition open throughout the year, to which students, student organizations, organizations promoting urban and youth culture apply with educative, multidiscipline, multimedia and progressive projects. All accepted projects are provided with a venue for the realization of the program, as well as technical and organizational help provided by the Culture of Change staff. In this way, Student Center organized the Festival of Experience, A Road to India – Festival of Indian Culture, Kliker! – Festival of Popular Literature, and many other events.
Booksa Književni klub Booksa otvoren je 2004. godine i zamišljen je kao mjesto okupljanja prvenstveno mladih ljudi, ali i svih ostalih zaljubljenika u književnost i čitanje. Klub je postao referentna kulturna točka u Zagrebu i Hrvatskoj zahvaljujući svom bogatom književnom programu. Booksa nudi književne večeri, čitanja, neformalna druženja s renomiranim domaćim i stranim književnicima, promocije knjiga, predstavljanja mladih neafirmiranih autora, projekte u suradnji s drugim udrugama i pojedincima iz zemlje i inozemstva, radionice kreativnog pisanja, književne radionice za osnovnoškolce i srednjoškolce, književne festivale, projekcije dokumentarnih i aktivističkih filmova, klupske koncerte, izložbe i druge programe. U sklopu kluba postoji čitaonica s raznolikom ponudom knjiga koje stoje na raspolaganju svim članovima kluba za čitanje bez naknade.
Booksa Booksa Literary Club opened in 2004 and has since become a meeting place primarily for young people, but also for all other book buffs and reading addicts. The club has become an important cultural point in Zagreb and Croatia thanks to its rich literary program. Booksa hosts literary evenings, readings, informal meetings with renowned Croatian and foreign writers, book promotions, presentations of young aspiring writers, projects in collaboration with other associations and individuals from Croatia and abroad, creative writing workshops, literary workshops for elementary and high school children, literary festivals, screenings of documentary and activist films, concerts, exhibitions, and other programs. Matica hrvatska utemeljena je 1842. u svrhu promicanja nacionalnog i kulturnog identiteta u područjima umjetničkog, znanstvenog i duhovnog stvaralaštva. Jedan je od najvećih nakladnika u Hrvatskoj te priređuje brojna kulturna i znanstvena događanja. Iako je ogranak Matice hrvatske u Šibeniku službeno osnovan 1962. godine, u spomen-knjizi Matica hrvatska 1842–1892 navodi se kako su povjerenici Matice u Šibeniku djelovali već 1878. U okviru djelatnosti koje se odvijaju u devet odjela s ukupno 186 članova, ogranak Matice hrvatske u Šibeniku svojim je stalnim javnim angažmanom prisutan u kulturnom životu grada Šibenika, ali i na prostoru Šibensko-kninske županije, pa i šire. U okviru Ogranka organiziraju se predavanja, tribine, izložbe, književne večeri i predstavljanja Matičinih izdanja.
Matica hrvatska – Šibenik Branch Matica hrvatska was founded in 1842 with the commitment to promoting national and cultural identity in the fields of artistic, scientific and spiritual creativity. Today it is one of the largest publishers in Croatia and it organizes various cultural and academic events. Even though the Šibenik branch of Matica hrvatska was officially founded in 1962, the memorial book Matica hrvatska 1842-1892 notes that the activities of its commissioners in Šibenik date back to 1878. Through its public engagement, the Šibenik branch of Matica hrvatska, with its nine departments and 186 members, is present in the cultural life of the City of Šibenik as well as the wider area of Šibenik-Knin County. The Šibenik branch organizes lectures, public debates, art exhibitions, readings and evenings of poetry as well as presentations and promotions of Matica’s publications.
Vidikovac Zagreb Eye Smješten u Ilici 1a, na šesnaestom katu nebodera u samome srcu glavnoga hrvatskoga grada, Zagreb Eye pruža jedinstven i nezaboravan panoramski pogled na Trg bana Jelačića, Kaptol, Gradec, Gornji i Donji grad te najvažnije kulturno-povijesne građevine Zagreba, njegove trgove, ulice i parkove . Zagrebački neboder na kojem je smješten vidikovac sagrađen je 1959. i u to je vrijeme bio najviša i najmodernija zgrada u Jugoslaviji. Stari je vidikovac zatvoren krajem 1980-ih, a nakon rekonstrukcije za građane je ponovno otvoren 2008. godine. Uz natkrivenu terasu, s koje se pruža čaroban pogled na glavni grad, središnji dio vidikovca čini ostakljeni prostor površine 200 m 2 namijenjen raznorodnim promocijama i manifestacijama. Vidikovac je dostupan posjetiteljima 365 dana u godini, neovisno o godišnjem dobu i vremenskim uvjetima.
Zagreb Eye Observatory Located at Ilica 1a, on the sixteenth floor of the skyscraper in the very heart of the city, Zagreb EYE offers a unique and unforgetable panorama of Ban Jelačić Square, Kaptol, Gradec, Gornji grad and Donji grad, as well as the most important cultural and historical buildings of Zagreb, its squares, streets and parks. The Zagreb Skyscraper was built in 1959
and at the time it was the tallest and the most modern building in Yugoslavia. The old observatory was closed by the end of the 1980s, and it reopened to public in 2008 after an extensive reconstruction. Besides the covered terrace offering a magical view of Croatia’s capital, the central part of the observatory consists of a glassed-in space used for promotion of various destinations, products and brands. The observatory is open to visitors 365 days a year, regardless of season and weather conditions.

Mjesta Raznoliki književni rukopisi, različiti sadržaji Festivala europske kratke priče namijenjeni su i raznovrsnoj književnoj publici. Suradnjom s prostorima koji na mapama Zagreba i Šibenika čine nezaobilazne točke kulture, tu raznolikost i njihovu dobru energiju pokušavamo povezati u prostor u kojem će se pisci osjećati kao kod kuće. Na pomoći i susretljivosti zahvaljujemo Filozofskom fakultetu u Zagrebu, Francuskoj Medijateci, Klubu Booksa, Knjižnici i čitaonici Bogdana Ogrizovića, Muzeju Grada Šibenika, Studentskom centru Zagreb, Talijanskom institutu za kulturu, Caféu Velvet, vidikovcu Zagreb Eye.
Venues Diverse literary voices and various events of the Festival of the European Short Story cater to numerous literary tastes. Joining forces with venues that are inevitable points on the cultural maps of Zagreb and Šibenika, we aim to bring this diversity and good energy into the place where both writers and the audience will feel at home. 7. Organizator / Organizer Hrvatsko društvo pisaca (HDP)
Hrvatsko društvo pisaca (HDP) u deset godina svojega postojanja izraslo je u jednu od vodećih umjetničkih udruga u Hrvatskoj, promovirajući ponajbolju hrvatsku književnost u regiji i svijetu. Svake je godine u porastu broj programa koji se ostvaruje u okviru Hrvatskog društva pisaca. U 2014. godini HDP će realizirati više od 50 programa, što uključuje pet uglednih časopisa, nekoliko međunarodnih književnih festivala (uz FEKP, tu su Stih u regiji i Književnost uživo), međunarodne razmjene pisaca, tribine, nakladničku djelatnost, književno-znanstvene simpozije i drugo. Između ostalog, HDP objavljuje “Poeziju”, jedini časopis u Hrvatskoj posvećen isključivo poeziji, prepoznat i cijenjen i izvan zemlje, “Europski glasnik”, jedan od najprominentnijih kulturnih časopisa u Hrvatskoj, časopis “Relations” koji donosi prijevode hrvatskih pisaca na engleski, njemački, francuski i druge svjetske jezike. U protekle tri godine u izdanju HDP-a izašlo je pedesetak knjiga, a tome treba pribrojiti male dvojezične edicije (tzv. chapbooks) kakvih festival Književnost uživo (u suradnji s hrvatskim PEN-om) godišnje objavi 25 do 30. HDP ostvaruje plodonosnu redovitu međunarodnu suradnju, prvenstveno s europskim zemljama, ali i s azijskima, poput Kine, Indije, Japana, u obliku programa razmjene pisaca te pojedinačnih projekata.
Croatian Writers’ Society In ten years of its existence Croatian Writers’ Society (HDP) grew into one of the leading arts organizations in Croatia that promotes the best of Croatian literature in the region and beyond. The number of programs realized within Croatian Writers Association increases on a yearly basis and in 2014 HDP will participate in more than 50 different programs, including five acclaimed magazines, several international festivals of literature (besides FESS, there is Stih u regiji and Književnost uživo – Literature Live), international exchange of writers, public talks, publishing activities, literature symposiums, etc. Among other things, HDP publishes Poezija, the only literary journal in Croatia dedicated exclusively to poetry, recognized and appreciated even outside Croatia, Europski glasnik, one of the most prominent magazines for culture in Croatia, Relations, a magazine featuring translations of Croatian writers into English, German, French and other world languages. In the past three years, HDP published more than fifty books and small bilingual editions (chapbooks). Književnost uživo – Literature Live Festival (in collaboration with Croatian PEN Center) publishes around 30 of such chapbooks every year. HDP has a prolific international cooperation, first and foremost with European, but also Asian countries, such as China, India, Japan, especially when it comes to writers’ exchange programs and individual projects.
8. Grad partner / Partner city Šibenik, grad priča Tvrđave. Zidine. Bitke. Iliri. Templari. Mlećani. Turci. Glave na katedrali. Kuga. Spaljene vještice i jedan kralj. Šibenik je, dakle, odavno popunio sva obvezna prazna polja u obrascu za punopravni pristup među gradove Europe. Prvi se put javno spominje na Božić 1066. godine, a zadnji put 2013. u izvješćima o nastupu Prodigyja na Terraneu. Tu su Hrvati prvi put ugledali more i ostali gotovo cijelo tisućljeće prije povratka u Zagreb. U međuvremenu se plovilo, ribarilo, trgovalo, ratovalo. Izumio se padobran i pisalo na latinici prije ikog drugog. Zabijalo se koševe na Baldekinu, izgradilo kazalište od novca bogatih građana, a usred grada uzdignuta je i knjižnica. U Šibeniku je Europa prvi put vidjela kako izgleda električna energija, taj spasonosni pokretač aparata za espresso i playstationa. Ekološka je svijest, također, tu odavno usađena – sve je manje tvornica koje bi trovale okoliš. U Šibeniku svaka ulica ima klapu, svaka ulica ima slikara, pjesnika, boema, funcuta, nezaposlenog. Svaka ulica ima i svoj festival. Jazz, blues, rock, punk, indie i susjed koji u ponoć i minutu zove policiju. Ulice umjetnika, ulice kulture. Ulice dobro skrivenih talenata i neotkrivenih genijalaca. Šibenik, The City of Stories Bastions. Walls. Battles. Illyrians. Templars. Venetians. Ottoman Turks. Heads on the cathedral. Plague. Witches in flames and one king. Šibenik had long ago filled out all the mandatory empty fields on the form granting it full membership among the cities of Europe. Its first public mention dates back to Christmas of 1066, and the last to 2013 and reports of Prodigy’s performance at Terraneo Festival. This is the place where the Croats first laid eyes on the sea and stayed there for almost a whole millennium before going back to Zagreb. In the meantime, people sailed, fished, traded, waged wars. The parachute was invented and Latin script used before anywhere else. Baskets were scored at Baldekin, a theatre was built from the money of wealthy citizens, and in the middle of the city a library was erected. Šibenik was the place where Europe first saw what electric energy looked like, that lifesaving driving force of espresso machines and Playstation consoles. Ecological consciousness was also planted here a long time ago – there are fewer and fewer factories that could pollute the environment. In Šibenik every street has a klapa, every street has a painter, a poet, a bohemian, a funcut, an unemployed person. Every street has its own festival too. Jazz, blues, rock, punk, indie, and a neighbor who calls the police one minute past midnight. Streets of artists, streets of culture. Streets of well-hidden talents and undiscovered geniuses. Šibenik, one long story. Or many short ones... Marko Podrug
