Planting by the Month
JANUARY is the ideal month for planting your cool-season veggies such as beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, greens (collard & mustard), lettuce, peas, potatoes, turnips, and spinach. Don’t forget to prune those roses in mid-January to early February.
FEBRUARY is the last month for planting your cool-season vegetables if you missed doing so in January. Robust fruit trees, such as pear, plum and apple, should be pruned this month; be sure you look up how to prune each one properly as each have particular techniques for better growth. Before our heat sets in, get those hardy trees and shrubs down under this month so they have time to root well!
MARCH is warm-season planting time! So get ready to add those bell peppers, cucumbers, corn, green beans, tomatoes, and squash to the ground. Keep in mind you must protect them during our common late-season temperature drops. The list of bedding plants for this month is long, however you can research easily to find the right fit for your taste. Some examples are: sun rose & moss rose (portulaca), Angelmist Lavender, Angelmist Purple Stripe & Serena White (Angelonia), Butterfly Light Lavender, Graffiti Bright Red, & Kaleidoscope Appleblossom (pentas).
Happy Gardening!
