Editor's Letter Welcome to the Autumn issue of Mississauga’s magazine, I’m happy you’ve joined us. I hope you had a wonderful summer and that the transition into autumn has been graceful. Change isn’t easy but it’s necessary. As we approach our fourth successful year in serving our city, we’ve made tweaks along the way and in the competitive and sometimes volatile media industry, adapting and refocusing is crucial to our survival. This issue marks a significant change for Modern Mississauga – it’s the first time we’ve put someone famous on the cover. We feel we made the right decision, seeing as our local superstar has made headlines around the

world and is inspiring others as she goes. Our Arts section features marvelous Matt Zaddy, the new season of the exciting Mississauga Symphony Orchestra and Mississauga Arts Council’s cool Britishthemed fundraiser. We share our travel experiences in the Florida Keys and the Mazza Vineyards in Erie’s Wine Country with you, and explain the importance of winter tires. The tech article is a personal one about how modern technology can be harmful and how to combat it. We look at factors in becoming a landlord, John Lewis’ take on the new Star Wars movie is hilarious and the Glenerin Inn & Spa is highlighted for their great Holiday

attractions. Malton’s Holiday events are exciting and on a serious note, we look at the importance of bringing back their police station. Wrapping things up is a delicious recipe from our friends at Rooks To Cooks and the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake have their amazing annual Taste The Season festival, along with our Restaurant Guide. On behalf of the team, thank you for supporting a small, local business, especially in the ever-changing media world. Without you, there’s no us – and we’re grateful for that daily. Enjoy autumn, friends.

MODERN ARTIST:

Matt Zaddy

by jay kana | photo by jason hashimoto 1. How long have you been an active musician?

Since 2000. My first 11 years were focused on progressive metal, the last eight on folk-rock / rhythm & blues.

2. Your involvement in the music community is tremendous and you’ve won a prestigious Mississauga Music Award for the 2019 Best Local Promoter - What's the most rewarding aspect?

Seeing growth in my fellow musicians, and knowing that music culture in my community thrives for the listener and the creator.

3. You've just released a new album How would you describe it to a stranger?

focused more on life lessons I've learned over the last few years. I also worked with a new producer on this record, Ross Citrullo of RHC Music. He really pushed me to make the songs the absolute best they could be musically.

5. What inspired the songs on your new album?

These songs were inspired by life lessons, of trying to be the best version of myself I can, and sharing that with the world around me. Life, love, hardship, redemption, and the people in my life that I am lucky enough to share my days with.

6. What succinct advice do you have for developing musicians?

It’s a mix of folk-rock / rhythm & blues that focuses on storytelling. There are groovy songs in the vein of John Mayer, Hozier, Black Crowes, Serena Ryder, Neil Young, Damien Rice.

Work hard at your craft, and be smart about the music business side of things. Learn from those who have been successful and collaborate. Make daily effort to improve on your skills and your knowledge. You can do this, but you cannot do everything yourself.

4. How was the songwriting on this album different from 2015’s "Perfect Moments?"

7. What does 2020 look like for you?

Perfect Moments was written over five years and focused more on where I had been, and my hope for the future. The new album

I’ll be traveling across Canada promoting the new album and playing as many festivals as I can, trying to get the message out there. It’ll be a great year!

Unlocking Paradise in the

Florida I’ve been to various parts of Florida throughout my 41 years. I turned 18 in Orlando, attended a wedding in Boca Raton, loved the Treasure Coast and yes, I’ve been to Disney. It was the famed Florida Keys that kept eluding me… until earlier this year. I was invited for a five day journey to soak in the Keys and see if the hype I’d built up around it was legitimate. Spoiler alert: Yes. Yes it was. And then some. By the end of my trip I was ready to buy a house in Key West! Here’s my fun-in-the-sun experience of the Keys and if you haven’t been, I’ll go with you. If you’ve already been, well, I’ll still go with you! Start your adventure with a stop at the Key Largo Conch House, a family owned and operated gem that boasts fresh seafood, a gorgeous patio and some of the best Key lime pie and conch fritters. Head west 40 miles to the luxurious, award-winning Hawks Cay Resort, fresh from a $50 million renovation. In addition to 60 acres of gorgeous grounds, there’s something for everyone here, from swimming with dolphins, fishing, diving, multiple pools, delicious dining options and impeccable rooms. My room featured a wraparound porch that was steps from the pool and the waterfront. Dining-wise, check out the exceptional on-site Angler and Ale, complete with remarkable views and indoor/outdoor seating for over 200. In addition to mouthwatering meals, their “Hook N’ Cook” program lets guests bring in what they’ve caught and have it cooked in-house. If you want to soak in an authentic Keys experience, take the 20 minute drive from Hawks Cay, charge your camera and hit up Robbie's Marina.

10 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2019

Keys Yes, the food is fresh, authentic and wonderful and yes, you can feed the tarpon but the biggest takeaway for me was the eclectic Tropical Open Air Market. There’s art, photography, jewelry and clothing and in a welcoming atmosphere. Spend more time there with their kayak/paddleboard/jet ski and boat rentals. 30 miles westbound from there is where you’ll find the truly remarkable Turtle Hospital in Marathon, which has been treating injured turtles and returning them to the wild (when possible) for over 30 years. Be sure to take the tour of this wonderful facility that rehabilitates and researches these wonderful creatures in an ongoing effort to give them a great life. A mile away is the Castaway Waterfront Restaurant, home of a variety of delicious food from (of course,) seafood, sushi to steaks. Owner John Mirabella is a master of de-boning the delicate lion fish. There’s nothing quite like enjoying fresh food on the water in a unique setting. The owner of the famous Florida Keys Brewing Company is Burlington’s Craig McBay, who‘s been creating creative craft beer since 2015. Yes, they’re young but their options are many and they’re showing up in more and more locations and growing smartly. Enjoy one of their delicious brews, infused with local flavours, in their quaint beer garden. Across the street is the Morada Bay Beach Café, which offers dining options on the beach for a spectacular view, especially at sunset. It’s a local hot spot and garnered additional attention after it was

featured in Netflix’s “Bloodline.” Blending fresh Caribbean and American food through amazing service helps make them a hotspot for locals and visitors. 54 miles westward, go kayaking in the magical Lower Florida Keys backcountry and snap up a ton of pictures at Big Pine Kayak Adventures. After some quality time on the water, get a true sense of the “old” Keys world via No Name Pub, which has been around since 1936. Interestingly, the walls are lined with one dollar bills from locals and tourists – definitely a must-see! Finally, keep moving west until you can’t go any further and you’ll find yourself in my personal paradise, Key West. It’s a laid back way of life here…there’s no hustle or bustle. It’s simply a part of the world that encourages you to embrace and enjoy it at your own pace. Start by checking into the Margaritaville Key West Resort & Marina that has over 16,000 square feet of nearly everything, from dining, attractions, and shopping, with plenty in between. The rooms are gorgeous and if you’re lucky, you’ll get a water-facing room. The best decision I made was to rent a scooter so I could explore the area on my own for most of my visit. They’re inexpensive and provides you the freedom to roam at your own pace and yes, they’re safe, as long as you’re responsible with them.

After adventuring for a few hours and seeing just how charming Key West is, I hit up the popular spots, including the Hemmingway Museum, Duval Street, Mile Marker 0 and Southernmost Point of the Continental US buoy, and then rode over to Air Adventures for a helicopter tour, which produced a few hundred pictures. I was so enamoured by the area that I took a relaxing two- hour long midnight drive (errr, scoot?) to get a stronger sense of one of the world’s most popular destinations. Love being on the water? Fury Water Adventures offers a terrific snorkel excursion and dolphin watch cruise, along with other water adventures. Want that picturesque sunset cruise? End Sunset Sail upon their 69 foot sail catamaran with 2,300 feet of deck space. They offer complimentary champagne, pop and adult beverages as you fill your Instagram feed with gorgeous photographs. Dining-wise, here are my top three recommendations: 1. The Stoned Crab, which offers incredibly fresh seafood and yes, stoned crab. They catch their own crab, lobster, shrimp and local fish and serve it in their spacious, open-air restaurant, complete with a relaxed vibe. 2. Bistro 245 provides a stunning view of the Key West Harbour and blends it with fresh pasta, meats and those delicious Key West shrimp, along with other menu items, located in Margaritaville,

3. Blue Heaven has breakfast and brunch down to a delicious science with its stylish blue building, fabulous food selections and friendly service. Every place I visited that served food offered Key Lime Pie and instead of mentioning it a few times, I opted to give you this line: Every piece of Key Lime Pie I had was delicious. Period. Some varied in presentation and whipped cream/meringue amounts/flavours but I strongly encourage you to try as much as possible when you’re here. I arrived in the Keys full of optimism and left with a promise to return soon, all while savouring every moment of the newest addition to “Jay’s 3 Favourite Places On Earth” list. ONE TANK TRIPS by jay kana |

photos courtesy of jay kana

While the majority of wine drinkers will head west towards Niagara-On-The-Lake to enjoy a variety of wines, heading a bit further west into Erie, PA yields a wonderful wine region via the Mazza family. Three hours from Mississauga, over the Peace Bridge and west along scenic Route 5 brings you to Mazza Vineyards, Pensylvania’s largest producing winery, founded in 1972. Erie’s growing conditions are ideal as it offers cool temperatures and fertile soil and, nearly 50 years after opening, Mazza’s product lines have expanded as has their presence and popularity among wine drinkers. There are a few properties beneath the Mazza umbrella, so let’s start with the original, Mazza Vineyards, founded by Robert Mazza. What started out with five employees, the modern vineyard now employs nearly 100 people. As far as what they do and how they do it, Robert’s son and General Manager, Mario, says “We blend a traditional, Old World approach to winemaking with New World techniques for a varied and unique wine list, including varietals and blends using traditional vinifera, hybrid, and native varieties, as well as fruit, sparkling, fortified and dessert wines.” Simply put, they’ve got a plethora of delectable wines for nearly every palate from Cabernet Franc, to Vidal to Ice Wine and plenty in between. The property itself is stunning, with a rustic exterior and an elegant, approachable interior. The open-concept tasting room encourages conversations with your host, chatting with those around you and gorgeous photographs. The South Shore Wine Company property, opened in 2007, is stunningly beautiful. Their Civil War era cavern tasting room adds to the allure of an already attractive location. Once inside, you’re welcomed by friendly staff and Instagram-friendly surroundings in this stone wine cellar. Wine-wise, it’s different from what you’ll taste at Mazza Vineyards as this one focuses on sparkling and white wines. Conveniently, it’s only a four kilometers away from the aforementioned so you’ll easily be able to experience both with a brief commute. Their next property, Five & 20 Brewing is located just across the state line in Westfield, New York, but only 20 minutes away from Mazza Vineyards. Interestingly, it’s the state’s first ever winery, distillery and brewery beneath one roof and smartly named the “Westfield Wonder.” Having 80 acres of farmland for grapes and grain definitely helps.

14 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2019

ERIE’S AMAZZAING WINE REGION In true Mazza form, they’ve done a tremendous job in consistently delivering an attractive, high quality product and location for the people. Their set up produces a variety of products, including small batch/small barrel Rye Whiskey and Bourbon, Corn Whiskey, Limoncello and others. The process is clever as they blend two local grains for a unique taste and as they evolve, new offerings will be released. Their aptly named “Grain to Glass “process is best described as “Our local roots run deep and we have made it our business to utilize the most locally grown ingredients in our products. We built our entire operation on a Grain-to-Glass model, meaning that we have taken pains to plan farming and production so that the agricultural products we use to craft the beverage that ends up in your glass don’t have to travel very far.” On that note, what impressed me the most is their on-site TimberFish Technologies facility. It’s essentially a fish farm (trout and salmon) that reuses all the byproduct nutrients from the distillery and brewery production at Five & 20 and combined with locally made woodchips to create a contaminate-free food chain. Basically, they’ve created a costeffective, sustainable, clean, in-house ecosystem. Their craft beer offerings are plentiful and range from a Cream Ale, Stout, Barley Wine to my favourite, a Rye Pale Ale, which is aged seven months. My stand-out factor is them utilizing local resources, precise distilling techniques and their creativity in creating delicious flavours. Food-wise, check out Noosa, which expertly creates handmade, mouthwatering food with gorgeous lake views, all at a realistic price point. The Skunk & Goat Tavern does pub-fare very well, along with a retro feel of exposed brick and hardwood floors. Looking for something a bit different? 1201 Kitchen deliciously blends Latin and Asian fare in an upscale yet approachable atmosphere. When you go, stay at Lakeview on the Lake, which is impressively Erie's only waterfront hotel. I stayed in one of their gorgeous cabins and enjoyed a couple of sunrises from their Muskoka chairs… there’s also a hammock to really unwind! MISSISSAUGA'S

SHINING STAR

In conversation with the 2019 US Open Champion, Mississauga's

BIANCA ANDREESCU the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title. 16 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2019

1. Describe your initial emotions when you won the 2019 US Open.

It’s really tough to put into words my emotions after that win. It took a couple of days to fully wrap my head around what happened and honestly, I am just blown away. I remember thinking about all of the injuries that I had to work through to get to this point and never thought it would happen this quick! They journey was worth it and I am truly thankful and blessed.

2. How have you mentally adjusted to becoming a world-famous athlete?

It has definitely been different, but I’ve tried my best to stay grounded. This is really only the beginning for me, and I want to remain focused on my goal of eventually becoming the #1 tennis player in the world. I do my best to eliminate outside distractions when I am training and the days leading up to a match; it’s really important to stay as focused as possible. But, the love and support I have felt recently definitely motivates me to work harder too. Billie Jean King once said “Pressure is a privilege” and it’s a quote that has really stuck with me through everything and something that I remind myself of every day.

3. During your rise to success, what's been a constant in your life?

My family. My parents have been with me since the beginning and have sacrificed so much for me to get to this point today. It makes me so happy to experience all of this with them.

4. What keeps you grounded on a daily basis? My family and a strong support system around me.

5. What four things can you not live without? My dog Coco, family/friends, music, and peanut butter.

6. What was the mental toll your back injury took on you?

It was really difficult but I also learned a lot from it and am stronger because of it. Mentally, I had to learn to adjust to the situation and stay focused and continue to remind myself that I will bounce back. I couldn’t wait for that day.

7. If you were to retire today, what would you want to be remembered by?

Making a difference and inspiring the next generation of athletes. I have received a lot of messages from fans about how they or even their kids are now picking up tennis racquets and are playing because of what they’ve seen me do. It’s humbling but also really inspiring to me too.

8. If you were to put a percentage value on how meditation contributes to your success, what would that number be and why?

It’s hard to put a number on it because tennis is such a mental game but, I find it to really be equal parts.

9. What succinct advice would you give to your generation regarding becoming successful? Keep pushing and working hard towards your goals and don’t give up. My Mom always tells me, “You have to dream big to get back” and it’s so true.

10. What keeps you motivated personally and professionally?

Professionally, I stay motivated by continuing to set goals and to work really hard towards them. This is just the beginning for me and there is so much more I want to do on the court. Personally, I’m motivated by wanting to make a difference in the world to use my platform and my voice for so much more than just tennis.

11. Fill in the blank: I will retire when

I feel satisfied with what I have accomplished in my career and when I stop enjoying the process and the opportunity that playing tennis offers me.

A PRIMER ON

WINTER TIRES by jay kana | photos courtesy of clément m. on unsplash THEY CAN SAVE YOU MONEY

You can receive a discount from your auto insurance provider by installing winter tires on your vehicle. Rates vary by provider and the average annual savings hovers between three and five percent.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE INVESTING IN WINTER TIRES

The lowest cost isn’t the highest quality and vice versa. Consumer Reports, the Automobile Protection Association, Car and Driver, along with several other resources have plenty of data and rankings done through extensive testing. Speak with you trusted automotive specialist as well before making a decision to get a full scope of information.

GET A SET OF FOUR

Regardless of front, rear or all-wheel drive, it’s crucial that all four tires on your vehicle are equipped with winter tires. Ignore that thought of it being a budget-friendly decision to opt for two. Instead, realize that your vehicle will be better equipped for winter driving with four winter tires, especially as it will increase the handling capabilities of your vehicle.

“ALL SEASON” TIRES TO NOT INCLUDE WINTER

Do you have one piece of footwear that’s good for the beach, hiking, mud, rain and snow? Me either. The same holds true for tires. Winter tires are made from a different compound that are designed and engineered to perform better than your summer/three-season tires. They increase stopping distances and provide better maneuverability in temperatures lower than 7 degrees Celsius.

THEY’RE NOT JUST FOR SNOW

Winter tires should never be called “snow” tires. Winter tires handle cold weather, icy, slick road conditions and snow/slush. The reality is that there won’t be massive snowfalls every day of winter. There will, however, be many cold days and having the right tire can increase the control you have while you drive.

YOUR STOPPING DISTANCES ARE REDUCED

Putting two identical cars side by side on an icy/snowy road, one with and one without winter tires, is something that’s been done dozens of times, all with the same results; the car with the winter tires stops faster than the car without. In situations where you’ve got to stop the car quickly, it’s always smarter to have the right equipment at hand, well, foot.

THE FUTURE IS

SLOWLY KILLING

by shane saunderson |

photo courtesy of szabo viktor on unsplash

I was shaking uncontrollably. It started with my hands, and I remember holding them to my face, looking at my own flesh as though it were foreign. The tremor quickly traveled down my arms and legs, and within seconds, my whole body was vibrating as though every atom in my being had matched a resonant frequency and moved me in unison at a macro level. I didn’t know where I was – I was in a taxi. I forgot where I was going – I was traveling to an airport. I couldn’t remember why I was there – I was flying home. But I did know how I felt – I was scared. In that moment, my body revolted against my life decisions and was denying me, with every ounce of its being, the ability to keep going forward towards that airport. I was afraid that if I showed up at LaGuardia for my flight to Toronto, I would instead get on

a flight to a far corner of the world. I couldn’t bear facing my real life. I was a broken down, husk of a human, shaking uncontrollably in the back of a taxi, unable to form coherent sentences to describe what was happening to one of my closest friends on the phone. And it was set off by a buzz in my pocket. That buzz was one notification too many; it was my life pleading for attention when I had nothing left to give. It was the reminder that my phone was the portal to so many issues. I had been dealing with an inordinate amount of personal and professional anxiety and was trying and failing to remotely deal with serious health issues in multiple family members. I had been traveling for months, juggling difficult and demanding clients, and questioning the value and purpose of my work. I felt guilt for

losing touch with close friends and drank to bury it since I couldn’t confront it head on. This wasn’t an isolated episode. I get anxious, depressed, and near manic at times, but I don’t tell anyone that. The irony of announcing this via magazine is not lost on me, however. If I don’t speak up, I am fueling the problem that plagues me. My struggle and mental health challenges are not completely of an internal origin, but a product of the increasingly technologized life I creep towards with each passing tomorrow. I’m legitimately concerned that the future is trying to kill me. I’ve had a complicated relationship with technology, as it historically fascinated me and gave me a tangible outlet for envisioning the future. I chose to get a smart phone in 2009 when I biked across the country to blog updates from the road.

"We’ve traded genuine presence for digital omnipresence." 20 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2019

ME These best intentions were the beginnings of something dark. In the spring of 2014, I had an anxiety attack in the back of a taxi. I use modifiers to soften that statement – anxiety thingy, panicky moment, nervous episode – but I’ve learned enough to know what really happened. It was one of the scariest and most confusing moments of my life. I felt completely helpless and out of control and it was through the kindness and compassion of close friends that I was able to mitigate just how bad the situation could have become. The silver lining was recognizing the increasingly dangerous impact technology was having on me. We’ve traded genuine presence for digital omnipresence. Friendships lapsed and relationships were affected by not being fully present in the moment, as I often

wondered what I was missing out on online. I watched my phone until bedtime. Work suffered from constant popups and notifications sneaking into my field of view. I had become addicted to technology. I created barriers and rules to protect me. I banned my smartphone from my room, turned off 80% of my push notifications, left my phone in my pocket, to name a few, to protect myself. Beyond our basic commodities and needs, the only economy that should matter is the happiness economy. Some derive happiness from aspects of products, services, experiences, or notifications. However, it’s easy to lose sight of this and contribute more to the problem – in this case, mental health – than the solution: happiness. Expect better of yourself. As trends shift social power and awareness away from

end users and towards organizations, be vigilant on maintaining the power you have. Curate technology to provide joy over burdens. Set your own rules and limits to decide what’s harmful, unacceptable, and what makes you happy. I’m rediscovering my happiness economy by living more analog again. I had my fun with social media, dove into the deep end of the digital world, and lived as a modernday cyborg. I want to see if there are more smiles from a hug than a “like.” I want to see if I’m happier with quality over quantity. Will I miss certain parts of the online world? Probably. Will I see much more by regaining my focus, presence, and energy in the things I chose to engage with completely? We’ll see. I am, however, realizing that the old adage of “less is more” may hold true.

BECOMING A LANDLORD

What You Need To Know by sam mcdadi |

Purchasing a home that will be leased out to tenants is generally a positive financial move. However, understanding exactly what you’re getting yourself into before making the decision to become a landlord is very important. As a Mississauga real estate agent for more than 30 years, I have helped countless individuals and families invest in real estate. Here is some advice. Landlords are never off the clock. Emergencies can occur at a rental property at any time of the day or night. Landlords need to be available to address these issues at a moment’s notice. Most of your time will be spent passively collecting rent checks and addressing minor maintenance issues, but you could be contacted in the middle of the night for an urgent plumbing leak, for example. Being a landlord can be a great experience, but anyone who feels inclined to purchase a rental property should be prepared for all of the possibilities

22 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2019

related to being a landlord. Bad tenants could cause damage to the property. Issues with the building itself may be costly if an inspection is not done before the purchase is complete. Make sure that you are financially stable enough to deal with any surprises that may come your way. There are laws that landlords are required to adhere to when renting out a property. Make a point to review Ontario housing laws before you decide to become a landlord. Laws related to health codes, security deposits, safety of tenants and discrimination could spell trouble for you if you do not read and understand these laws prior to issuing a lease to a tenant. The lease that you give to a tenant must comply with these laws. Failure to comply with housing laws may mean that the lease is not legally binding. Being a landlord has great benefits. Don’t let the potential negatives of being a landlord discourage you from investing in rental properties. Landlords enjoy the benefits of being their own boss. Financial benefits can be immediately realized when tenants pay rent each month, and there is long-term value in the property itself. Many landlords find that they build strong, positive relationships with their tenants. If you’re searching for an income property to lease out to tenants, as a Mississauga real estate agent with much experience, I know I can assist you in finding the right income property for you. THE IMPORTANCE OF A MALTON POLICE STATION

CELEBRATE & ENJOY M A LTO N TH IS HOLIDAY SEASON!

by natalie hart

by natalie hart

The Malton community came together to show support for the tragic loss of Jonathan Davis, honouring his memory with a candlelit vigil at the community centre. However, there is more that we as a community should be doing. The Malton BIA is advocating, along with Councillor Parrish, that Malton have a full Police Division. A petition started by resident Ann Barclay is now available online at www.maltonbia.com or www.carolynparrish.ca. Please sign the petition and share it with your network so that the Malton community can send a strong voice of support. While the Councillor and the Mayor have both indicated their support, we need the village of Malton to send that message. The upcoming youth hub already tendered is an important part of adding resources to our community, but a full service Police Station is also needed to make sure we have the support we need. A safe Malton is a priority for the BIA and we are asking for your help in making that a reality.

Come out and have some fun on December 1st at Paul Coffey Arena! The Malton BIA is excited to be hosting a tree lighting event, with a BBQ, giveaways and much more! Councillor Parrish will be sponsoring a free skate at the arena for a real winter family fun day and music will add to the excitement. On hand will be the model Avro Arrow and plans for where it will be located nearby. By the end of December, our tree will be joined by a brand new sign for Malton, so make sure to plan your New Year’s Day photo in front of it. See our revamped website for more details on this and more upcoming events brought to you by the Malton BIA.

all you need to know about

STAR WARS

Everyone loves a good Star War, and with Episode 9 right around the corner there's no better time to recap the series for hardcore fans and newbies alike. It all started a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... EPISODE 1: THE PHANTOM MENACE It's 1999. A starry-eyed Space Jesus, played by... Haley Joel Osment, probably?... spends his days pod-racing and yearning to escape his miserable desert life. Suddenly his world is flip-turned upside down by handsome Obi-Wan Kenobi. They fight a bad guy. Liam Neeson dies. EPISODE 2: ATTACK OF THE CLONES This one doesn't count. EPISODE 3: REVENGE OF THE SITH The Sith (those are the bad guys) are back and boy are they mad! Meanwhile, gloomy, grown-up Space Jesus falls in love with an older woman, betrays his friends, and kills a bunch of kids. Honestly, it's pretty messed up. Everyone fights. Samuel L. Jackson dies.

26 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2019

EPISODE 4: A NEW HOPE A classic of fantasy film-making, Episode 4 introduces us to enduring heroes Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Flash Gordon. The bad guys build a Death Star. The good guys blow up the Death Star. Obi-Wan Kenobi fights Bad Space Jesus. He dies. EPISODE 5: THE EMPIRE CLAPS BACK Most famous for introducing the world's favourite muppet, Yoda. The bad guys are calling themselves "the Empire" now and they are taking zero chances. There's a Yeti in the first act, but its thematic connection to the rest of the series is unclear. EPISODE 6: ATTACK OF THE EWOKS The bad guys build a new Death Star, but Luke and Reformed Space Jesus team up to beat them once and for all, thereby ending the franchise. This one also doesn't count. EPISODE 7: THE FORCE AWAKENS Several years later the bad guys build

by john murray lewis photo courtesy saksham gangwar on unsplash

another Death Star, only this time it's a Death Planet, which you'd think would be quite a bit smaller than a Death Star but is actually much bigger. Flash Gordon fights a bridge and dies. EPISODE 8: THE LAST JEDI An undisputed masterpiece of modern cinema, perfect in all ways and absolutely free of critical controversy. In fact, the only guy who didn't like it, Ricky Dobson, was completely ostracized by the adoring fandom. Anyway, I can't really remember what happens, but I think in the end some kid does that thing with the brooms from Fantasia. EPISODE 9: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER So what's next for the Star Wars saga? Will Liam Neeson make a comeback? Will the bad guys build an even bigger Death Star? Will the fans finally admit that Star Trek is the richer fictional universe? We'll find out on December 20th!

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP by chef shai mandel INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

• 1 small butternut squash, halved and de-seeded • 2 small onions, diced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 sprig sage, finely diced • 2 litres vegetable or chicken stock • 1 Tbsp maple syrup • 3 Tbsp olive oil • 1 Tbsp orange juice • 1/2 orange zested • 1/2 tsp cinnamon • 1/2 tsp nutmeg • Salt & pepper to taste

1. Preheat oven to 375F. 2. Line a sheet pan with parchment and place the squash flesh side up. 3. In a small bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, 2 Tbsp of the olive oil, orange juice, zest, cinnamon, and nutmeg. 4. Use a pastry brush to brush the mixture over-top of the squash. 5. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and roast in the oven for 20 - 30 minutes, or until squash is browned and soft. 6. In the meantime, heat the remaining oil in a medium pot. Sweat onions until clear. Scoop the roasted squash out and away from the skin. Add to pot and top with the stock. Bring contents to a simmer, cover, and let cook for 15 minutes. When squash and onions are soft, remove from heat. 7. Add to a high velocity blender, or use an immersion blender, and puree until smooth. If need be, add additional stock to thin out. 8. Season with salt, pepper, and maple syrup (optional) to taste. 9. Serve hot with toasted pumpkin seeds and sour cream, if desired.

Taste the Season is a popular Holiday-inspired wine and food tasting passport program offered by the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake every weekend in November. This is when our wineries celebrate the season’s bounty by pairing exceptional VQA wines with locally-inspired culinary creations that highlight the flavours of the season. With a $55 touring pass guests can enjoy a VQA wine tasting and food pairing at each of our 25 member wineries. Driver passes are also available for purchase. The best part is that the tour pass is valid any weekend in November (1-3, 8-10, 15-17, and 22-24) from 11am to 5pm so you can plan your visits over several weekends. We recommend a maximum of eight winery visits per day to get the most out of the experience and to savour the delicious pairings at a relaxed pace. Not to mention you will want a reason to come down to Niagara-on-the-Lake more than once during this lovely time of year, as the spectacular display of fall colours will provide an amazing backdrop to your visit.
