Change isn’t always easy but necessary to stay successful, relevant and to continue being a trusted media outlet.

As is tradition, we’ve got Mississauga’s Holiday Gift Guide in this issue with something for nearly everyone on your list! Our Arts section features the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra and the annual Mississauga Music Expo. We share our outdoor travel experiences in Quebec and Holiday Valley, John Lewis’ continues to make us laugh and we go through purchasing a new car. The Glenerin Inn & Spa is highlighted for their great Holiday attractions, we share tips to sell your home quickly, and spotlight Align Orthotics, Canada’s first luxury foot health concept.

We’ve got a terrific gingerbread loaf recipe and highlight six great books for cooks. On behalf of the team, thank you for supporting a small, local business, especially in the ever-changing media world. Without you, there’s no us – and we’re grateful for that daily. CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS

WITH THE MISSISSAUGA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

by ryan tobin | photo by black umbrella photography Join the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra this holiday season and enjoy the sights and sounds of Christmas! From traditional oratorios to audience sing-a-longs, the orchestra presents concerts for all musical tastes. On December 14, the MSO continues a Christmas tradition with a production of Highlights from Messiah. Now in its sixth year, this traditional concert will feature popular works from Handel’s masterwork oratorio. The brilliant voices of the Mississauga Festival Chamber Choir join the orchestra in selections which include the uplifting and iconic Hallelujah Chorus. Our fantastic roster of soloists will include: Angela Yoo, soprano; Lillian Brooks, mezzo-soprano; Zachary Rioux, tenor, and Christopher Dunham, baritone. Regular ticket prices start at $40. On December 15, our wildly popular, family-oriented Christmas concert returns to ignite the holiday spirit in everyone. A Merry Little Christmas will bring together the MSO, MSYO, and special guests, the Mississauga Children’s Choir. Jingle your bells and sing-a-long as a combined orchestra of over 250 musicians perform your holiday favourites! Make sure to peruse the MSO Christmas market that will feature items created by our very own musicians, and visit the Long & McQuade instrument petting zoo to try your hand at your favourite music maker. Regular ticket prices start at $30.

Trying to find the perfect gift for the music aficionado in your family? Give the gift of opera. After successful productions of Carmen and La Bohème, the MSO will return to fully-staged opera with a production of Verdi's masterpiece, La Traviata. This perennial favourite tells the story of the tragic love between the courtesan Violetta (Cristina Pisani) and the romantic Alfredo Germont (Keith Klassen). Played out against the hypocrisy of upper-class fashionable society, Alfredo and Violetta’s love threatens to shame his family. When Alfredo’s father directly appeals to Violetta to relinquish her one chance of happiness, Violetta submits, and her act of self-sacrifice leads to her paying the ultimate price. Our productions will take place on January 25 and January 28 within the splendour of Hammerson Hall, a world class theatre that is at the heart of the Living Arts Centre. Join us, and experience the power of opera. Regular ticket prices start at $50. To purchase tickets by phone, call 905-306-6000. Special pricing is available for seniors, families, and patrons under 26. Complimentary underground parking is included with every ticket purchase. The MSO can be found online at: mississaugasymphony.ca; on Facebook at: facebook.com/mississaugasymphony, on Instagram at: @msymph and on Twitter at: @MSymph.

START NEW

family traditions AT HOLIDAY VALLEY

by jane eshbaugh The Holidays are upon us, and it is so easy to get caught up in the parties, shopping and various social commitments. But what about your own family? This is the year to start a tradition of a fun family ski trip to Holiday Valley before your Christmas rush. December can be one of the snowiest months in the Western New York snowbelt, and Holiday Valley in Ellicottville has a snowmaking system that can get the resort up and running with just a few days of cold weather. The slopeside Tamarack Club at Holiday Valley offers pre-season lodging rates, along with half priced lift tickets from opening day (November 29th, weather permitting) through December 24th. Ellicottville is just a 2.5 hour drive south of Mississauga, but it feels a world away from the hectic city life. The ski lifts are steps away from the Tamarack Club, as is the Snowsports School for kids and adults. An indoor/outdoor heated swimming pool, 2 outdoor hot tubs, the Ellicottville Oasis Spa and John Harvard’s Brew House are all part of the Tamarack Club. The charming Village of Ellicottville is the quintessential small ski town with family friendly restaurants, unique shops and welcoming locals.

ONE TANK TRIPS

A WONDERFUL WINTER IN HOLIDAY VALLEY

by jay kana Ah, Holiday Valley… one of my favourite One Tank Trips and only a little over two hours away. A year round destination that maintains its quaint, cozy aura even though it’s one of the top spots in the north east to visit and experience is their trademark, ensuring that they’ve never gotten too big for themselves. Since this is our Holiday issue, skiing takes a front seat at the 61 year old vacation spot. Holiday Valley boasts 13 lifts, 60 slopes and trails, three base lodges, two hotels, pools, mountain coaster and numerous amenities. The resort has become a leader in the ski industry and ranks among the favorites of skiers in the east. It’s absolutely familyfriendly and a great spot for a gals/guys/friends/band/solo getaway. Once you cross the Peace Bridge, it’s a short and scenic jaunt south on the 190/90/219 that’ll lead you in to charming Ellicottville, where small town USA shines brightly with a quaint and modern main street. As you shuffle onward towards Holiday Valley, their majestic mountains envelop the horizon and eagerly await the chance to keep you and yours entertained, excited and enthralled. Whether you’re staying at the Inn At Holiday Valley or the Tamarack Club (my favourite!) know that you’ll have top-notch lodgings with easy access to the slopes and an army of amenities close by. It’s a skiers and snowboarder’s haven as you can easily carve the day

away and for the more horizontal-based types, enjoy the cross country skiing and snowshoeing routes. Plus, there’s the fun Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster. Personally, the vertical life excites me and I’m on the slopes for as long as my 40 year old body will allow. Being a true winter hot-spot, they’ve also got a sweet snow tubing park a few miles away. They’ve got a full-service rental facility on the grounds if you’re a casual skier/snowboarder. To slow down and soak in the rest of the resort, Holiday Valley has several hot tubs, indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, a full-service spa and for you canine owners, the Inn permits one or two well behaved pooches. Food-wise, John Harvard's Brew House serves up classic pub fare and wonderful beer that’s simply delicious and paired with stellar service for lunch and dinner. This family owned resort is a smart, modern and close option for a day, weekend or week away. Yes, it’s a popular destination and one of the most visited in the north east but even with a plethora of people there, the wait times are very short and service levels are always high. Reach out if you’d like more info than my word count allows or if you want to share a chair lift. I’m relatively quiet on the way up as I write more than I talk…most times. holidayvalley.com MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2019

Quebec’ WINTER OUTDOOR ADVENTURES by jay kana |

Earlier this year, I jumped at the opportunity to spend a week in captivating Quebec during winter, with the focus being on adventuring and enjoying what their outdoors has to offer. Armed with a solid winter coat, a dozen pairs of thermal underwear and the rest of the winter outerwear gear, I trekked east to la belle province. OUTAOUAIS

North of Ottawa is the gorgeous village of Old Chelsea, where you’ll find Nordik – Spa Nature, the largest spa in North America. Specializing in relaxation and wellness, they’re focused on thermotherapy and relaxation techniques from Scandinavian countries. There’s a plethora of options to help you rejuvenate in this gorgeous setting.

12 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2019

Gatineau Park boasts 61 km of snowshoeing trails varying in difficulty and is an excellent way to enjoy winter outdoors. I did the easy version and if I can make it through, anyone can! Travel at your own pace, soak in the scenery and be sure to capture several pictures. For lodging, choose the charming Wakefield Mill Inn and Spa with its oh-so-stunning backdrop on the shores of the Gatineau River. Comfortable rooms, an inviting dining room with menus based on a traditional French and Québécois style, and picturesque grounds make this an easy choice. Eastern Outaouais brought me to the simply stunning Fairmont Le Château Montebello for a curling lesson. Did I hurry hard? Of course I did! Did I fall? Not once! From the old-school elevators to the massive stone pillars and picture perfect interior/exterior, this was/is one of my favourite Fairmont properties. Dine at their on-site restaurant, Bistro La Seigneurie, which blends trendy food

photos courtesy of jay kana

with friendly surroundings. Parc Omega, a natural and historic reserve, is a massive version of Ontario’s African Lion Safari. A 15 km car route that takes approximately 90 minutes allows you to observe and feed the wildlife in their natural habitat. You’ll see deer, bison, buffalo, wolves, bears, caribou, birds and many others along your journey at this remarkable park. Lodging is also available if you’re interested, plus there’s the very cool and unique “Wolf Cabin” where you’re inches away (separated by glass, of course) from the wolves. It’s an up close look at these majestic creatures in the wild.

EASTERN TOWNSHIPS

I started by Kick Sledding at Vie de Plein Air. Once you find your balance point, it’s actually a fun way to get around. This year round sports equipment rental centre also offers skates, bikes, kayaks and paddle boards/boats and other items to enjoy their beautiful outdoor surroundings.

, ’s Fatbiking was next (biking on snow with massive, grippy tires) in Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook. There’s 12 km of trails available as you get a full body workout here. It took me a few minutes to adjust and find my balance point but once I did, I can see why this activity is increasing in popularity. There are showers on site, along with a quaint café to help you refuel and refresh. Ice Fishing is no longer on my bucket list, thanks to my time at Parc Découverte Nature. They’ve got two fishing ponds, gear is provided and you don’t require a fishing license. I was shown how to safely hand-drill a hole in the ice, lure and catch fish. Yes, I caught one and quickly put it back. If you’re the catch and consume type, their team will prepare your fish for you to bring home. Alternatively, you can clean, cook and eat your fish via an onsite BBQ. Winter is made better by enjoying a sleigh ride at Centre d'équitation Jacques Robidas. Having horseback riding experience, I rode while my travelling companions were in the sleigh. I figured I’d been on plenty of sleigh rides in my life but horse riding in winter in Quebec was another great bucket list item to cross off. There’s also cottage rentals, snowshoeing and hiking packages available. Cross country skiing at Parc national du Mont-Orford was picture perfect. Big snowflakes gently descended upon the park during my time at this winter wonderland. Glide along 15 marked, packed

and groomed trails totaling 50 km varying in difficulty. This nearly 60 square kilometer park is a year round facility is great for hiking, camping and time on the water. Wrapping things up on the activity side was something indoors, courtesy of The Leon Courville Vineyard, complete with breathtaking views of the Eastern Townships. Enjoy their red and white wines, aged wines in oak barrels, late harvest and ice wines as well as sparkling wines. Lodging at the Estrimont Suites & Spa is a little piece of heaven, between views of the mountains, impeccable suites and onsite amenities. It’s certainly a great way to unwind after exploring the outdoors! Their on-location restaurant specializes in steak and seafood, paired with wonderful wines. On the dining side, be sure to visit Taverne 1855, where they use high quality local products to create delectable menu offerings, paired with a selective wine list, all wrapped in a warm, enticing atmosphere. The Star Café Lac-Brome is a quaint spot for fresh, organic coffee, absolutely delicious pub fare and live music.

6 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A

NEW CAR

For most, it’s the second largest purchase aside from real estate so when buying a new car, here’s a handy list of crucial factors to consider:

FINANCING

Are you going to lease, finance or outright purchase the vehicle? Each comes with their own benefits, depending on your situation. Be proactive and ask the dealership to clearly explain the cost of borrowing if you’re financing and what your buyout is if you’re financing. Personally, financing terms exceeding 60 months are something I avoid as 72/84/96 month terms can be an early warning sign of not being able to afford that specific car. Interest rates from the manufacturer fluctuate so keep a keen eye on that. At times, there’s zero percent financing, which can be a strong incentive. Also, if you’ve got a trade in vehicle, shop it around to get the highest value for it.

WARRANTY

Most dealers are up front with their warranty coverage but have a thorough conversation with them to find out exactly what

is and is not covered. Is an extended warranty worth it? It depends on how long you’re planning on keeping the car for and your yearly mileage. If you’re a high-mileage driver, give it consideration because a little bit of money up front can potentially save you money down the road.

OPTIONS & TRIM LEVELS

Create a list of “must-haves” and find the trim level that matches that. My three mandatory factors are a rear wiper, orange rear turn signals and a sunroof. Do you want heated seats? All-wheel drive? The top technology package? Most manufacturers have stand-alone options so you may not have to move from the mid trim to top trim to get what you want. Whatever it is, be patient with this aspect as you can’t change your mind once you’ve driven the car off the lot.

by jay kana

FUEL ECONOMY

Consider your weekly driving habits and cross-reference it with the fuel economy ratings and see if it makes sense for your lifestyle. What type of fuel does it take and how big is the fuel tank? Modern vehicles strive to provide great fuel economy but be mindful of what your weekly/monthly fuel costs will be.

INSURANCE

A crucial aspect of any car purchase is your insurance costs. Sometimes, different trim levels have different insurance rates and with a plethora of options for car insurance, do your homework and find the lowest rate while not sacrificing coverage options.

COMFORT & CONVENIENCE

During your test drive, go through the motions of what your daily/weekly drive is like. Do the rear seats fold easily? How much cargo space is offered versus what you need? Is the infotainment system easy for you to operate? Does the audio system sound good to you? How easy is it to park? Does it have the right amount of active safety and technology for your needs? Does it fit in your parking garage/ spot?

HOLIDAY ESSENTIALS & TIPS from Global Pet Foods by casey genge – nutrition educator Toys to keep your pets occupied

Whether entertaining company, wrapping gifts or spending more time out of the house, we need to offer our pets alternative stimulation in place of regular activities. There are many options from automatic laser pointers to food dispensing puzzle toys, or long-lasting chews.

Calming and soothing products

With disruption to routines, pets that are prone to anxiety have an even harder time during the holidays. There are a variety of products available that offer support for these animals. Pheromone diffusers, calming garments and supplements are all available, so it is likely there is a solution for every pet.

Diet considerations for winter

Routines change during winter months with the colder temperatures and shorter days. Some pets don’t enjoy being outdoors as much and activity levels may decrease. Feeding wise, if activity levels decrease, so should the calorie intake. Simple changes like reducing

24 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2019

food volume or the amount of treats fed are great ways to adjust calorie intake. Changing to a lower calorie or lower carb diet may be a good option.

Pet apparel & foot protection

Protections from winter hazards is important for pets. For those without a sufficient haircoat, jackets and sweaters might be necessary. Consider the effect of cold, ice and salt on foot pads. Boots and balms help to prevent frost bite, cuts and irritation.

Gifts for 4-legged family members

Pets are part of the family, so of course they should receive holiday presents! A fun new toy, cozy bed or fashionable collar is a great way to include pets in holiday traditions.

Special holiday treats

Our pets love Holiday treats just like we do. Traditional holiday flavours like gingerbread, pumpkin, cranberry and turkey can be enjoyed by everyone, including pets! There is even delicious pet-friendly eggnog!

TIPS TO SELL YOUR HOME

Q U I C K LY

FIND THE RIGHT AGENT

The best way to sell your house quickly is to work with a top real estate professional in your area. Look into the agent’s track record, and pick the agent who has sold homes in your neighbourhood and who left behind the happiest clients. Make sure that your agent is familiar with both the good and bad aspects of your neighborhood, and when they walk into your home, quiz them on which parts of your home they think that buyers will love or hate.

GET A STORAGE UNIT

While renting a storage unit might feel like you’re moving out before your house has even sold, clearing out some of the clutter in your home can make it much more attractive to potential buyers. You may think that the full-size portrait of your grandmother in the hallway is the feature that ties your decor together, buyers might feel differently. With a significant portion of your furniture

and personal items out of the way, it will be easy to keep your home sparkling clean whenever a potential buyer comes to visit. Plus, putting your stuff in storage before you move out will save some time when you sell your house, and it will also make moving into your new home a little bit easier.

PRICE YOUR PROPERTY PROPERLY

memories in your house, one of the aspects of your home that appeals to a prospective buyer is its freshness and novelty. Dress your house up like it’s brand-new, and make sure that you take care of any aesthetic or structural issues that might make your home look well-worn.

CULTIVATE CURB APPEAL

While you may think that your house is worth a king’s ransom, your opinion isn’t what matters if you want to sell your home quickly. The housing market can fluctuate, and you’ll need to price your house to match the conditions, if you want it to sell. The best way to make sure that your house will sell quickly is to work with a top real estate agent who knows exactly how much properties like yours are currently selling for.

Many potential buyers will drive away without even looking at the inside of your house if it doesn’t grab their attention from the curb. Amp up your curb appeal with a new landscaping job, some fresh outdoor light fixtures, or an updated front door. While many homeowners don’t factor this variable into the equation, replacing your dinged-up garage door can also astronomically increase your curb appeal.

PUT YOURSELF IN YOUR BUYER’S SHOES

If you are thinking of listing your home for sale, please contact me at 905-502-1500 and I would be happy to answer all your questions.

Take a look at your home from the perspective of a potential buyer. While you have fond

SMALL BUSINESS PROFILE:

Align Custom Fit Footwear & Footcare by jay kana With each pair of our feet containing 52 bones, 200+ muscles, ligaments and tendons, 66 joints (40 of which are actively articulated,) they’re the foundations for our body. Canada’s premiere orthotics resource is found via Mississauga’s Align Custom Fit Footwear & Footcare (Align) and the wife and husband team of Teressa and Darius Dinshaw have made it their mission to get us rethinking how we look after our foothealth and providing solutions in a self-discovering and empowering way. This is just the first barrier that’s unshrouded when you visit. Despite carrying my excess winter weight year round, having flat feet and constantly beneath my ideal step count, I’ve fortunately been spared back pain. However, as I’m fresh into my 40’s, I wanted to get an understanding of my feet, alignment and biomechanics to learn more about my feet and what I may need going forward. Align’s unique, advanced technology and science-based approach is impressive on paper and more so in person. My visit started with a conversation with a clinician who asked about my day to day activities and history to get a baseline of my body history. From there, I did some light mobility tests and stretches, muscle tests, and a walking test on their catwalk and a treadmill, all part of their customized Five-Step Program. Additionally, and impressively, Align took a 3D scan of my feet and explained in great detail what exactly I was looking at. They also took a video of my time on the treadmill to analyze my posture, how I walk, if I lean and other crucial aspects. The attention to detail and integration of modern technology illustrates how they’ve become an industry leader. By offering an elite experience, Align works with you to discover crucial information about your feet so they can provide the smartest long-term solution going forward. Simply put, they’re revolutionizing the way you walk. If you need orthotics, know that what you’re receiving is custom made for only you based on their state-of-the-art scanning technology. Using a generic option can hinder more than help. Further, their unique medical perspective and it’s integration with fashion is the key when they digitally designed the device. Afterward, their team works with you to find your right piece of footwear amongst their vast fashionable and functional collection since every foot is different. From corporate to casual, they’ll find the right fit for you. Since there’s a plethora of information provided, they smartly emailed me the information we spoke about, plus the video they took of me on the treadmill. “We believe that attention to detail is critical and our professional team is passionate and committed to your comfort and health” says co-founder Darius. I experienced my first Medical Pedicure via a licensed Chiropodist, complete with sterilized instruments, cuticle pushing, advanced nail cutting techniques and a detailed foot health check-up.

From body alignment, to foot type, ache and pain solutions, and genuine care, their unique experience and post-visit follow up sets them apart. Align truly does offer a 360 degree solution for foot wear and care and with their intelligent, individual approach, this Mississauga business will enable you to always put your best foot forward. getaligned.com 905.823.0111
