VA M ’ S CREATIVE RESIDENCY by eldiana begovic, cultural development manager As Canada’s sixth largest city, Mississauga remains an innovative and creative hub for artists and entrepreneurs. VAM’s Creative Residency (VCR) which specializes in development and mentorship for emerging artists, is the first of its kind for the arts organization and Mississauga. Back for its third year, the six month residency invites artists 18-29 years old, living or working in Mississauga to share their talents with the local community. The residency provides artists with studio space at VAM’s studios in Riverwood Park and culminates in a self-curated exhibition. This year, the cohort of residents will be collaborating with Open Gallery, to bring both virtual and in person events and exhibitions to the city. The 2020-21 Creative Residency is generously supported by the Community Foundation of Mississauga. The goal of VAM’s Creative Residency is to provide space and opportunity for creative collaboration. Beginning in October, residents will be interacting with spaces and creatives across the city through monthly events online and in person. VAM and Open Gallery will be producing events showcasing musicians, poets, and visual artists from across the region with the intent to engage new audiences, build networks and produce accessible and exciting events. “It’s always a pleasure to collaborate with VAM and bring upcoming talent to the art scene in Mississauga- we are both sides to a bridge,” says Hibah Mian, founder of Open Gallery.

PAZAN GALLERY Celebrating 10 Creative Years in the Community Have you ever needed to have an old photo restored? Or had the need to have a family treasure preserved in a picture frame? Have you wanted to have that beautiful photo on your phone printed in a large format? If so, then the local owners of Mississauga’s Pazan Gallery – Gloria and Marcelo Leonardo Pazan, are more than happy to work with you.
Gloria and Marcelo’s continued commitment to being a socially-conscience and active member of the community guides them in their pursuit to provide competent creative services to their clients. For a decade now, Pazan Gallery has been supported by clients looking for professional creative fine art services such
as; custom picture framing, photo restoration, and photo printing. They’re happily and excitedly celebrating their10th anniversary in business this year but with the current health crisis, their plans for a big celebration event will have to wait until next year. Even during these uncertain days, Gloria and Marcelo have remarkably managed to expand their shop to create an additional 800 square feet of new gallery space at their location. This is a welcome addition to the cultural scene in Port Credit, who has seen many of its creative businesses forced to close down during the pandemic. Pazan Gallery features local fine art artists, temporary pop-up shops, and community events, as well as a “boudoir” photo setting, along with many other uses. They’ve launched a new online shop to expand their reach and connect further with the community via www.PazanGallery.com. The new digital art shop will allow clients to buy; featured artworks by local artists, as well as quality standard photo frames with antiglare “art glass”. The shop allows clients to upload and print high-definition fine art photos for printing onto archival canvas, high-definition metal, and museum-quality photo and fine art papers. They’re constantly updating the website, so visit their online shop often for new art items available for purchase. Gloria and Marcelo look forward to future events at Pazan Gallery where the community will once again come together for shared cultural experiences that foster community spirit and goodwill. pazangallery.com 905-278-1374 info@pazangallery.com

A SONG OF SUPPORT photos by MICHAELxCrusty In conversation with Demetrius Nath, founder of Mississauga Music and rock band Maybe May, on why and how he organized a community collaboration to support The Mississauga Food Bank through the new song, Through Your Eyes. 1. What prompted you to write this song?
Growing up in Bangladesh, I’ve always had a heart for the poor & needy. Over the years during my time in Canada, I’ve translated that into a few different efforts. Last year, I thought it would be neat to bring some of my contacts in the industry along with musician friends to collaborate on a song – something I have never done before. But this song would serve a purpose, tied to a cause - think “We Are The World” – but local. It was an exciting venture artistically & if successful, beneficial for the community. 2. Why did you decide on the Mississauga Food Bank as the charitable partner?
The Mississauga Food Bank operates like a hub within the city, on top of having their own operation in-house. They have the resources to allocate relief to other food banks that have specific needs. It was a no brainer to support them! 3. How challenging was it collaborating with the team during COVID?
Co-writing a song on Zoom presents quite a few challenges. Matt Zaddy & Kendra Charest-French are excellent songwriters who improved upon my original ideas. With the technology that’s around these days, we got it done fairly quick… thanks to MAYBE MAY’s bassist & resident Logic wiz Rian, along with percussion perfectionist Vitaly. As for all the features on the song, they are pros at this… it came together easier than I had anticipated. Shout out to Alessia Cohle, Arlene, Chris Hummel, Michael Ursini, Tennyson King & Jasmine Virginia for what we made possible together during quarantine. 4. Why did you decide to do a collaboration versus only your band?
What we are trying to accomplish require the involvement of the community, it’s no one-man job. The more people we can gather to stand with us & help, the more successful we will be in feeding the hungry. Like Arlene said, “there’s strength in numbers.” Not only is this collaboration helping us reach a wider audience faster, it is also showcasing how coming together with one another can attain results. 5. How can the community get involved to support this great cause?|
We need everyone to share the video & donate link! The more people that are aware of our efforts, the better. And of course, if you’re able to – download the song & contribute. We raised $1000 in our first week but it is crucial that the momentum doesn’t end there…we have until December!

WHAT GOES UP
WH AT CO M E S D OWN by pablo dassen Do you ever feel uncomfortable stepping into an elevator? You aren’t alone as it’s a common type of reaction. In my case, social anxiety spikes when a stranger enters. This year, that feeling is increasing, even away from elevators. Others I’ve spoken with have also experienced this. Why is this happening? The answer likely lies in the pandemic which has naturally magnified anxieties in society due to the upheaval it has brought to our daily lives. Things may get better, but they may get worse. After all, winter is coming. Before winter descends, we have to tackle the “Fall” of 2020. One wonders how much further we can possibly fall. Billions of lives have already been altered drastically, some ended prematurely, due to the pandemic. It feels unfair to admit that we collectively may not have handled things as well as we could have. It’s unsurprising. Humans spend vast amounts of resources avoiding a fall. Most of us can stay on our feet most of the time, both literally and figuratively. As a result, we under-develop our coping skills and our resilience. We need to learn how to get back up. We’re seeing all this play out throughout our city. Responses to the pandemic have ranged from fear to hope, from confusion to overcompensation, with many in between. What does this have to do with elevators? They’re a framework for addressing my anxiety. If I don’t get in, I can’t get up to where I’m headed. If I let anxiety stop me, I’ll be stuck where I am. So, what can I do? I can adapt! Find ways to do what I need safely. Figure out what I can control (my reactions) and what I can’t (other people). Figure out what I can change (could this event be virtual?) and what I can’t (will my industry survive?) Few things are the way they were and collective anxiety has developed as we consider how many things may be altered forever. There are no easy answers. Still, we’re learning how to live with our anxieties, how to step into the things that scare us, and how to share space in a way that lets us go up, together.

My apartment hums with noise. The fan coil whirs at 1000 RPMs. The outlets buzz at 60Hz. The building bustles with the faint sound of neighbours talking. Sirens wail through my windows from all directions. Living in a city is noisy, and while we may not talk about it enough, being stuck at home for the past six months has had an impact on all our mental health. 30 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2020

continued... For me, a critical part of surviving this time has been through the cultivation of my own practice of mindfulness. Yoga, meditation, reflection, and forcing myself to feel have become regular parts of my day, without which I doubt I could have survived this far into the pandemic. And as a transplant to the city who grew up in rural Manitoba, all of this reflection has made me realize something very important: I miss quiet. If you are wired in any way like me, you may experience this yearning as well and my greatest advice to you is not to ignore these feelings, but instead go in search of silence. I’ve escaped the city on little trips numerous times and gone camping many more, however, my most recent jaunt out of the city was different; this trip was do be done with very explicit intent. I wanted to find silence so that I would have nothing to listen to, nothing to distract, and nothing else to focus on other than my own thoughts. I was eternally fortunate to have Honda Canada provide me with a bright, shiny, red 2020 Honda HR-V for my journey. Though the car came fully loaded with all of the bells and whistles one could want – adaptive cruise control, Sirius XM, and enough digital features for my engineering mind to play with for hours – I did my best to neglect these and opt to truly experience and feel the open road. It was strange cruising down the highway while hearing nothing but the wind whistling by the car but the strangeness quickly gave way to visceral joy as I hit the winding roads of the Kawarthas and raced my way through the tree-topped canopy of the Canadian shield. As the turns got tighter, the roads got rougher, and the directions more nebulous, I gradually converged on a sleepy lake in the north end of the Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park. I stepped out of the HR-V and breathed the air in deep, searching for my coveted quiet.
Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.
32 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2020
In the distance I heard the beeping of a reversing gravel truck, a truck approaching, and the faint footsteps of a fellow back country camper coming up the entry trail to the Bottle Lake boat launch. I connected to my meditation practice and consider each of these sounds independently. I let my mind experience them and then released them, not judging or clinging to the noise or frustrated thoughts that accompanied. I calmed myself and found my centre, but still could not find silence. My search continued. I unloaded the HR-V and hauled my temporary life down the trail. While I was inflating my canoe and prepping to launch, I met Kari from Peterborough and struck up a casual conversation about escaping the city. It seemed that others were searching for the same thing as me, no matter the location or size of where they were from. On my asking, Kari recommended a quiet, secluded waterway off the North West tip of Bottle lake that led to a small water cascade and the ruins of an old grain mill. We smiled at each other like two people who would never meet again, and I jumped in my canoe and hit the water.
The day was windy and the short paddle to my back-country site was an arduous one. This made my arrival, unpacking, and swim in the warm August waters even more beautiful as few things are more lovely than a break well earned. Ever-denying the playful grasshopper and embracing the productive ant, I setup camp, unpacked my essentials, gathered firewood, and made my small slice of nature into a temporary home. I sat out in the cool, gritty sand that sloped away into the lake and began to meditate. I heard small waves lap against the shore, the strong wind whistle through the trees, and eventually the distant splashing of an approaching kayak heading back to civilization. I considered each of these sounds momentarily and tried to leave them behind, unattached. I continually returned to the sound of my breathing and the thump of my heartbeat, but still could not find silence. My search continued. I struck a fire and cooked my dinner as the sun began to fade behind the tree line. As the light faded from the sky, coyotes and wolves howled at the emerging moon and loons’ high-pitched, haunting wails
said hello to their neighbours and the odd tremolo warned each other of approaching danger. As dusk faded to black, I heard a distant rumble that grew with each boom. A massive storm inched closer and closer to my location until, nearing midnight, the storm arched directly overhead. Three bolts of lightning struck down so close to my location that instead of hearing the rumbling thunder, I heard the cracking explosion of trees splitting open by the force of millions of volts. I curled up tight in fear of the nearby strikes and definitely still could not find silence. The next morning, I awoke with sun and after a quick bite to eat, ventured down to the small beach to do yoga along the shore with the sun shining on my face. I focused on the sensations in my body – my sore neck from a rough sleep on a thin camp mat, tight arms from paddling against a strong wind, and cold feet standing in the still damp sand – as I moved through different poses and stretched my body to life. I paused in each pose to push myself further towards my limits and to listen to the world around me. I lingered in shavasana longer than usual since I had nowhere to be. I heard the morning birds

inhale. ex inhale. inhal waking each other up, the last of the previous night’s rain trickle down to the forest floor, and the chipmunks likely cursing me out from their tree perches for invading their space and not sharing my peanut butter. I giggled at the chipmunks and released the thought attached to each noise as it came to me while trying to focus simply on myself and tune out the world around me, but still could not find silence. My search continued. I took my trusty inflatable canoe out on the water in search of the route mentioned by my passing friend Kari. I again paddled North against strong headwinds, this time grinning with the knowledge that these same winds would expediently ease my tired muscles back home. I found the inlet to a small route that wove through lily pads, reeds, and marshland. I followed twists and turns back and forth, considering multiple times to turn back as the flora closed in around me and nearly blocked my path. But eventually I came upon a small clearing where the waterway opened up into a calm, open pool being fed by a series of small
34 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2020
waterfalls that connected more northern lakes down into my own. I locked up the canoe and awkwardly climbed up the waterfall, hopping from rock to rock, each time testing the foothold for sturdiness and slipperiness. Near the top of the falls, I found a large, flat rock to sit down on and enjoy a meager lunch. While munching away on bar-shaped sustenance I deconstructed the few steel remnants of the old mill that once pilfered power from the flowing stream. Though I hadn’t been a ‘real’ mechanical engineer in years, part of me still loved marveling at mechanisms. I reconstructed how the mill might have once worked – a meditation of sorts for my mind – while listening to the babbling waterfall, noisy grasshoppers, and leaves gently rubbing in the calm breeze. I experienced each of these noises and let them go and still I could not find silence. But every moment of that experience was bliss and every decibel of noise was euphony. It was at this point that I began, not to give up on my search,
xhale. exhale. le. exhale but realize what my search actually was. Less than 24h into my trip, I already felt recharged, more human, happier, and more at peace than I had all summer. I had given myself an impossible task – searching for silence in a world of noise – yet in the pursuit of that task I was able to find joy. I was able to appreciate the babbling waterfall, the crashing lightning, the pesky chipmunks, blistering winds, and even the beeping dump trucks. Perhaps even more surprising was that upon returning to my humming home and closing my eyes, I could even appreciate the whirring fan, buzzing outlets and wailing sirens. Obviously, my trip to the woods did my mental health a world of good and gave me the perspective I needed to appreciate the world around me. However, my most important finding of this trip was simply that: perspective. These are trying times and if you have the opportunity and it feels like your kind of getaway, I will always recommend getting out to the woods and sticking your toes in some dirt. However, if that’s not your thing or you can’t escape
the city, don’t lose hope. The winter ahead will be a trying one and even I won’t have my calming woods to escape to. However, the Kawarthas taught me a transferrable lesson that I’m able to take forward into our impending pandemic snow globe: sometimes all you need to overcome a situation is the perspective of looking at it from another angle. Feeling cooped up? Get outside for a walk. Trouble sleeping? Try the other side of the bed. Sick of your home office? Move your desk to the other wall. These tiny changes may have negligible tangible impacts on our mental health and lives, however, they have the potential to act as tiny subconscious nudges for your mind to experience something new and change the way you think, feel, and ultimately act. If you don’t agree with me… I recommend that you try reading this article again upside down.

ONE TANK TRIPS: Autumn A “The days of summer have fllown by, as they always do. The leaves have started to turn, and a crisp breeze rummages through the trees.” – Jennifer Merrick Ah, autumn… the leaves sliding from green to orange and red, sweaters and scarves are released from closets and it’s a wonderful time to jump in the car and do a few short jaunts to enjoy the season. Here are three One Tank Trips definitely worth doing this season:

CONSERVATION AREAS – ALL AROUND SOUTHERN ONTARIO With nearly 300 Conservation Areas in Ontario, and the majority of them in Southern Ontario, there’s a plethora of choice to get some driving and walking/ hiking time in. As autumn’s colours converge upon us, the comfortable climate is ideal for soaking up the outdoors with family, friends and makes for a great date idea. One of my favourites is Belfountain as the drive up Mississauga Road is gorgeous, there’s a waterfall and it’s got mixed terrain. Visit this website to plan your next series of outdoor adventures.
WATERFALL TOUR – HAMILTON & SURROUNDING AREAS Put on a good pair of shoes and head west to the “Waterfall Capital” boasting over 100 of these wonderful waterfalls and cascades. From smaller, ribbon cascades to the larger, deep-drop wonders, it’s easy to spend a day walking, hiking and filling
up your Instagram feed. Webster Falls is the largest and if you find the right spot, you’ll get postcard worthy shots. Devil’s Punchbowl treats you to a deep, multi-coloured gorge that’s simply stunning. Felker’s Falls requires a bit of extra work but I assure you, it’ll be worth it once you see just how gorgeous and scenic this waterfall is.
WINE COUNTRY – NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE & SURROUNDING AREAS We’re fortunate to live so close to this hotbed for wonderful wine and as such, it’s a quick hour-ish long drive to reach Niagara-On-The-Lake. There are over 20 wineries in the region, each offering something different from the wines itself to tours, with plenty in between. Autumn’s bursts of colours perfectly frame this radiant region as you create your own route map to your wineries. There are tour operators in the area that can do the driving as well. From reds to white wines and big to boutique wineries, your time in the Niagara Escarpment and the picturesque Niagara River Parkway is a must-see.

Living simply and in nature, Cathy continued, is what many islanders value, and she remarked on the changes she sees in people when they visit the island. “When they arrive, you can see the stress here,” she said, pointing to her shoulders. “And they’re not really sure what to expect and what they should be doing.” But it doesn’t take long before they start to relax and adapt to the island’s slower pace. “It a very free-form life here.” There was no wi-fi on the premises, but instead, the spacious property had hammocks, a fire pit and porches to hang out on. It was just what our family needed after a spring stuck mostly indoors and getting ready for our oldest to leave the nest. Without internet, we took advantage of the games and decks of cards in the rooms for family time, ate s’mores around the fire and explored the island itself. Located on the 42nd parallel, the same latitude as Rome and Barcelona, you simply can’t go any farther south in Canada than this beautiful island. Its southern clime not only means the longest frost-free season in the province but also unique flora and fauna like the prickly pear cactus, native coffee trees and the rare blue

racer snake. Bird watchers flock here in spring to spot the more than 350 specimens that stop here on their migration south. Seeing some of the bright, feathered friends on our summer visit during our island wanderings was a definite highlight. We rented bikes at Comfortech and peddled along the scenic shoreline of Lake Erie as well as through the Carolinian forest. A hike at Fish Point Nature Reserve showcased some of the island’s botanical riches and led down to its southernmost point, where our cell phones beeped, incorrectly informing us we were in the US. We also rambled at the opposite end of the 42-km island at Lighthouse Point. The restored 1833 watchtower stood stoically on the natural beach strewn with white, sun-bleached driftwood. Even at one of the island’s most popular spots, we saw very few people. Our favourite moment, though, was just walking at sunset along an unnamed beach near our B & B. Clamouring the rocks and sinking our toes into sand, I felt grateful for the chance to be with my family in these peaceful, natural surroundings. At the Mission Hall Project, a diminutive restoration of a Mennonite Church in the middle of the island, a plaque described Pelee’s ‘healing embrace’. “This can be found anywhere as long as we live with our hearts wide open,” we read. And perhaps in a place that has less, we can experience more of this ‘divinity in nature.’
and IF YOU GO: Transportation: It’s a little less than four hours from Mississauga to the ferry. The 90-minute crossing as well as the return trip should be booked well in advance as it fills up quickly -- 519-326-2154. Food: Restaurants on the island include The Bakery (which has delicious pizza as well as tasty desserts), Westview Tavern (be sure to try the Lake Erie pickerel or perch) and Cone Heads Ice Cream for a cold treat. Taco Shack, a taco and ice cream stand, is also a good option for a picnic lunch. Extend your Stay: For a more leisurely road trip and to avoid rushing for the ferry, we recommend extending your stay with a night or two at Point Pelee National Park or Kingsville. With a population of approximately 20,000, Kingsville is Canada’s southernmost official town and is the winter home to many of Pelee’s residents. Though it doesn’t have the island’s natural attractions, it boasts an elevated culinary scene that takes full advantage of the orchards and farms that surround the town with fine-dining, winery and brewery options. At 15 km, Point Pelee National Park is Canada’s second smallest national park, beating out Georgian Bay Georgian Bay Islands by a mere 1.5 km. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty and diversity. The Marsh Boardwalk took us up close and personal to one of the largest freshwater marshes on the Great Lakes. We spotted birds, frogs and snakes as we strolled the one-kilometre loop trail and climbed the three-story observation deck. About half a dozen trails criss-cross the park and there were some fantastic beaches. Don’t miss ‘The Tip’, the mainland’s southernmost spot that narrows down to a sandy scenic point. A newly-built, six-story observation tower gave us a 360-degree panoramic view of this ever-changing natural attraction.

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF WINTER TIRES
42 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2020
by jay kana |
Winter tires are important to keep yourself and others safe on the road during a season filled with various types of precipitation. Here are nine ways to better understand the world of winter tires.
When to install them
Pro tip: it’s not on the first snowfall. Once the weather is consistently at 7 degrees Celsius or lower for a few days, put them on as the rubber compound in winter tires are designed for better traction, grip and handling.
Get them on dedicated winter rims
If you have one set of rims (summer) and put your winter tires on those rims every season, you’re increasing the wear on the rims and both sets of tires. You’re also paying more to have this procedure done twice a year. And finally, your summer rims won’t be exposed to salt, rust, corrosion that good ol’ winter brings. The black steelies are my choice but if you want style, opt for an aluminum alloy set.
What makes a winter tire unique?
Winter tires are made with flexible rubber that’s engineered to stay soft in temperatures below 7°C. Summer tires are made differently and become rigid in lower temperatures, which makes it harder to stop, steer and accelerate. There’s a different tread design made to push snow/ice/slush away from the tire and give you better traction. Additionally, the siping (thin lines on the tread of your winter tire)works with the tread pattern to further push away obstructions. As a comparison, summer tires have grooves that will collect snow/slush/ice in the tread opposed to pushing it away.
They can save you money
You can receive a discount from your auto insurance provider by installing winter tires on your vehicle.

“All season” tires do not include winter continued... Rates vary by provider and the average annual savings hovers between three and five percent.
Do your homework before investing in winter tires
The lowest cost isn’t the highest quality and vice versa. Consumer Reports, the Automobile Protection Association, Car and Driver, along with several other resources have plenty of data and rankings
done through extensive testing. Speak with you trusted automotive specialist as well before making a decision to get a full scope of information.
Get a set of four
Regardless of front, rear or all-wheel drive, it’s crucial that all four tires on your vehicle are equipped with winter tires. Ignore that thought of it being a budget-friendly decision to opt for two. Instead, realize that your vehicle will be better equipped for winter driving with four winter tires, especially as it will increase the handling capabilities of your vehicle.
“All season” tires do not include winter
Do you have one piece of footwear that’s good for the beach, hiking, mud, rain and snow? Me either. The same holds true for tires. Winter tires are made from a different compound that are designed and engineered to perform better than your summer/three-season tires. They increase stopping distances and provide better maneuverability in temperatures lower than 7 degrees Celsius.
They’re not only for snow
Winter tires should never be called “snow” tires. Winter tires handle cold weather, icy, slick road conditions and snow/slush. The reality is that there won’t be massive snowfalls every day of winter. There will, however, be many cold days and having the right tire can increase the control you have while you drive.
Your stopping distances are reduced
Putting two identical cars side by side on an icy/snowy road, one with and one without winter tires, is something that’s been done dozens of times, all with the same results; the car with the winter tires stops faster than the car without. In situations where you’ve got to stop the car quickly, it’s always smarter to have the right equipment at hand, well, foot.

R THE 2ND WAVE by jay kana |
photos by nathan dumlao on unsplash
There won’t be a triumphant “back to normal” as we knew it. We’re learning how to cope with and adapt to the new normal and as expected, it’s accompanied with severe growing pains. Only a handful of us were alive during the last global pandemic so there’s no playbook on how to adjust. Face masks, hand sanitizing, six feet apart, limited numbers of private/public gatherings, isolations and other behavioural changes have all contributed to a tumultuous 2020. As you read this issue that was published on September 30th, 2020, we are in Wave 2. The hours will seem to grow shorter as the days go by this Autumn and Winter so it’s crucial to find the best ways for you to get through this. Some of us did well in Wave 1 and to help make Wave 2 a bit smoother, here are some pointers that can benefit some of you. We’re all in the same ocean but in different boats.
ANALYZE WHAT’S WORKED WELL
Whether it’s taking a break from your phone, picking up a new hobby, communicating more with family and friends or simply getting more rest, look back on what worked well for you during Wave 1. Carry those positive habits forward as the calendar marches forward. Additionally, build upon those and create new habits that will help as the seasons change.
UPDATE YOUR EMERGENCY CONTACT LIST
Kinda sounds morbid however everyone is at risk so be proactive and update your emergency contact list in hopes that you never have to use it through this pandemic.
RESPONSIBLY STOCK UP ON SUPPLIES
From hand sanitizer to disposable masks (or picking up a few more reusable ones) to non-perishable food items, slowly, slowly, slowly stock up. Bulk panic buying disrupts the supply chain, it can create nervousness in others (imagine seeing someone buying 100 bottles of ketchup and starting to wonder if they know something you don’t) and it’s absolutely unnecessary. Do it in stages and only buy extras of what you need opposed to what you want.
KNOW THE RULES & LAWS
Whether you agree or disagree with them, the new COVID laws/rules should be followed. I’m not a cheerleader for the current provincial government but I do realize that the medical professionals that advise them have our best interests as a population. Things aren’t flowery and fun when there are constant rule breakers thinking they’re north of the rules. If you’re unsure of what the rules are, read the point below.
ALWAYS BE EDUCATED
Read/watch the news. Then do the same from a different outlet. Then another. And another. Connect with you Ward Councilor, member of parliament, the City of Mississauga, and so on. Verify your information before sharing it. If something sounds too good to be true or outlandish, it’s probably bathed in misinformation.
continued... MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2020 47

continued... DON’T JUDGE OTHERS MAKE A LIST OF SMALL, LOCAL BUSINESSES YOU’D LIKE TO SUPPORT
Not everyone is the same and unless you have the superpower to read minds, there’s never a reason where judging others should be entertained. Sure, their actions may not align with yours and if they don’t, walk away. We’re still new to this, despite stumbling through Wave 1 so please, please, please be patient with others.
TAKE STOCK OF YOUR FINANCES
From examining if your monthly bills and service charges can be reduced, give your finances a thorough once-over and make any adjustments necessary. An emergency fund, regardless of amount, is something that can help either you or someone you love. If you can cut expenses temporarily, explore that option.
KEEP WEARING YOUR MASK
I said what I said.
BE CONSCIOUS OF YOUR SCREEN TIME
Almost all of us have experienced the influx of video calls, online work/education and what used to be a way to wind down at the end of the day has transformed into our entire day. Using your smartphone as a telephone, reading, walking, or any other non-screen related hobby/activity is something that should be explored.
DO YOUR ERRANDS ON “SLOWER” DAYS
If you already do this, (I do) that’s great. If not, see if there’s a way to do some of your errands on Monday’s/ Tuesday’s to avoid the volume of people on weekends at retail spots. Or order online and have items brought to you.
48 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2020
I realize not all of us can support every small, local business in our community at the same time. Consider creating a list of 20 businesses you’d like to support over the next few months of varying verticals and support them once a week if possible. With the holidays upcoming, get a head start of your shopping and help all of our small businesses survive this.
BE TRANSPARENT & SAY NO TO GATHERINGS IF YOU'RE NOT COMFORTABLE
It’s absolutely acceptable to say no if you’re not comfortable, scared, tired or have no interest. There’s pressure to get out of the house more than ever but if you’re not 100% on board, then don’t go. Clearly explain why and if they don’t understand your reluctance, then there’s a bigger problem at hand.
GET YOUR CAR WINTER READY
For the drivers out there, having your car sit for a few months in warm months isn’t all bad. Having it sit through frigid temperatures isn’t ideal. Connect with your dealership or mechanic and have them put your winter tires on and give your car a tune up/inspection so it’s ready for winter’s wrath.
CHECK IN ON FRIENDS & FAMILY
Captain obvious says check in on your friends and family because it’s easy to be overwhelmed with everything
happening within your walls that you’d be easily forgiven if you didn’t always check in/on others. For me, I phone family/friends opposed to a text to regain that human connection.
GET PLENTY OF REST
Mental, physical and emotional fatigue is draining on all of us. It can affect our relationships and careers and at times, creep
up quickly before it can be quelled. If you can hit the hay 30 minutes earlier, stop looking at your phone a few (or many) minutes before falling asleep and wait for 15 minutes after waking up to look at your phone, it can increase your quality of rest. If you’re overly tired each morning and night, the lack of rest will quickly catch up with you and risk having a negative impact on yourself and those around you.

MAKING INTELLIGENCE
LESS AR
by shane saunderson |
image by michael dziedzic on unsplash
Current AIs are idiot savants: brilliant at simpler tasks, such as playing Go or categorizing images, however, lack the generality and versatility to function fully in everyday life. While moments of frightening intelligence can shine through in the application of AI, many argue that we are still decades away from even the mercurial abilities of a five-year-antiquated girl. What’s cunning is that the obdurate parts of trying to erect AGI (a electronic computer as sharp as humans in general, not just at one narrow speciality) are not as intuitive as you’d expect they are.
50 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2020
…how are you liking my article so far? I’ll let you in on a secret: I didn’t write it. No, I didn’t plagiarize it either… sort of. The 100 or so words that you see above were written by a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). A GAN is a form of AI that uses two neural nets, pitted against each other in an attempt for one to fool the other. While one tries to use data at its disposal to create increasingly more human-like outputs, the other neural net calls bullshit when it thinks the output is artificial, creating a feedback loop that gradually improves the quality of the network’s output. GANs can be used to write articles, create deep fake videos, generate an audio clip of your voice saying just about anything, and even create entirely new digital people. This is both neat, but also a bit concerning. In an era of disinformation and digital bombardment, it means that it is now easier than ever to create and disseminate new content. All the while, you and I are none the wiser as to the origin of that content. Why is this potentially dangerous?
RTIFIC I A L First, we have to acknowledge the shifts in employment this will create. My extremely lucrative job as a volunteer writer for Modern Mississauga will likely no longer exist in ten years. Media personalities, news anchors, and even television celebrities may someday soon not be required to be actual people, but instead digital avatars that entertain and inform us. The music we listen to, art we observe, novels we read, and videos we watch will increasingly be produced not by people, but by AI. And at the core of this evolution, lay the true danger. As ruthless and conniving as some people may be, they are still people and typically have some sense of right and wrong. However, if what we watch, read, and hear is being generated by something nonhuman, it doesn’t necessarily come laden with basic human morality. Yes, any artificial system will require a human behind the scenes telling it what to create and what to do, however, even this simple one degree of separation from the audience will make it easier and easier to commit atrocious acts with digital information. Elections will continue to be manipulated, populations will continue to be
misinformed, and disinformation will move at the ever-increasing speed of digital processing. Part of the challenge is that developers are creating unbridled new technologies without thinking of the implications and without equivalent technologies to counter their creations. This is like creating biological weapons without an antidote. In the case of GANs, we need to be thinking about what SANs or Skeptical Adversarial Networks could look like. How do we train digital skeptics even more powerful than the generators so that we know how to identify artificially created content and keep ourselves informed in the age of disinformation. It is a beautiful thing to have more knowledge at our finger tips than any era of human civilization before, however, it is a travesty that so much of that information is a lie. As the internet continues to stockpile terabytes of data daily, we need to start thinking about how to separate the wheat from the chaff. We must create tools to discern real from fake, truth from lies, and artificial from human.

the importance of having a will by jay kana |
image by cytonn photography on unsplash
With the current state of the world, I started thinking about what happens if I move on from this world unexpectedly or earlier than I’d like to. I’m 42 and feel I have a few decades remaining. Naturally, realizing I don’t have a will entered my thoughts, along with the complications that are caused by that. I want full control over what my family and loved ones receive and to have it done quickly and properly. Not having a will nixes the aforementioned. I did some digging and spoke with a lawyer who practices in the area of wills and estates. Here’s why you should have a valid will created much sooner than later. A valid will makes clear who gets what,
removing the risk of an estranged relative/ friend/partner making a successful claim against your estate after you die. A valid will makes the grieving process easier with one less thing for your family/ loved ones to worry about. Without a valid will, administration of your estate after you die can be lengthier, more expensive, and less predictable. Without a valid will, estate trustees and beneficiaries and how estate assets will be split among beneficiaries will be determined by operation of law rather than by you. If you’re an entrepreneur or business owner, a valid will simplifies the process of who inherits the business, what happens to the business and the division of
responsibility, assets and finances. With a valid will, you select the executor (estate trustee), namely, someone you thoroughly trust to carry out your testamentary instructions. It provides crystal clear clarity for every item you include, regardless of size or value. If you want to have your best friend to have your favourite piece of art, if you want a portion of your inheritance donated to a specific charity/cause, or anything in between, having a will makes your specific wishes and direction known and carried out. Will planning is a crucial aspect of estate planning, which can reduce your tax burden when dividing/selling your property/ properties.

THE IMPORTANCE OF
INSURANCE & INVESTMENTS by dale tecson |
image by michael longmire on unsplash
As we travel through life, there are many aspects we’ll experience. From home ownership to creating families to employment, and many in between, having the right type of insurance will help make the journey easier and reduce the amount of stress involved. It protects what’s important to your loved ones/family and part of the bigger picture with financial planning strategies and goals. When you’re researching your ideal policy, have a thorough and transparent conversation with a licensed insurance agent/broker about your specific needs. Some insurance policies are mandatory (employment, business ownership, etc.) while others are optional. The risk of not having an insurance policy is: Financial expenses and taxes at death, income replacement during health crisis and leaving a legacy to name a few. Below are a few verticals that with the right insurance policy, can provide you with peace of mind in the event of an unexpected event that can severely alter the course of your life, your family, your workplace, and your career.
• Owning a business - Starting or buying one, managing a business • Higher Education & Training - College, Private schools • Unplanned Events - Natural disaster, Loss of Health coverage, Health complications, Markets • Home Ownership - Buying/Selling a home • New Child - Having a baby, adopting/fostering a child • Planning for retirement/retiring - Employer pension, Personal retirement savings • Life Partners - Marriage, Remarriage, Divorce, Partnering • Employment • Death of a family member - Estate Planning, Tax planning The world of insurance can appear intimidating with varying policies, coverages, deductibles and types. The same way you put a seatbelt on every time you drive a vehicle to protect you, having the right insurance policy for your lifestyle and needs is equally important. Investments are the second crucial ingredient of financial planning strategies and goals. It’s today’s plan to create a comfortable tomorrow for you and your loved ones. The importance of wealth accumulation through your working years enables retirement solutions that are managed through investments. There’s strong value in planning ahead through investing, including understanding financial security, creating a long term plan for financial needs and goals and allowing you to enjoy today’s world comfortably. Let’s have a conversation about ensuring you have the right insurance coverage. Dale Tecson Financial Security Advisor Cell (416) 898-7257 Office (905) 276-1177*425 dale.tecson@freedom55financial.com

Building a Better Mississauga What can we learn from COVID-19? by john murray lewis
| photo by erik mclean on unsplash
Three years ago, Modern Mississauga sat down with overrated urban planner Craig Rodriguez to discuss the big issues facing our city. Today those issues are bigger than ever. In this interview, we catch up with Craig over Zoom to explore how Mississauga can seize the unprecedented opportunity for city-building presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Modern Mississauga: Craig, the last time we spoke was 2017... Craig Rodriguez: It was one of the worst experiences of my life. MM: That's great. Anyway, a lot has happened since then! I mean, COVID, am I right? Was that your fault? CR: You told me we were doing a real interview this time. MM: Hey now, just because my camera’s off and one of my hands is stuck in a jar of peanut butter, it doesn’t mean this isn’t a legitimate
66 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2020
interview. It’s the new normal, Craig. So let’s get right to it. COVID. Cities. What’s next? CR: Well, the pandemic has revealed some serious inequities in the way our cities operate. Think about the uneven access to food, health care, safe public spaces, and essential services. We need to do better. At the same time, we need to support small businesses, fund sustainable transit, and encourage responsible tourism. In fact, UNESCO has said that this isn't just an opportunity to rebuild cities, but rethink them entirely. MM: UNESCO? You mean the beloved purveyors of high-quality Italian foodstuffs to Canadian families for over 100 years? What do they know about city-building in times of crisis? CR: ...Are you talking about Unico? MM: Yeah, exactly. So, as an urban planner, how would you build a more resilient Mississauga?
CR: The first thing we need to do is figure out how to protect our most vulnerable citizens. The elderly, the urban poor, the homeless, racialized communities, our essential workers. There's a human toll and an economic toll to letting people fall through the cracks. MM: If you could say one thing to longtime reader Mayor Crombie, what would you say? CR: That's not really necessary, since I'm in touch regularly with the Mayor's Office. But I guess I would say... "Hi, my name is Craig Rodriguez, and I'm waaaaaay too important to hang out with my FORMER best friends from Mississauga's number one early-2000s garagebased rap-metal band, Fist Bizness! But guess what? I'm not! I'm just a huge dork!" ...Hey, did you get all that? I think my wi-fi cut out... MM: Pretty sure I got the gist of it, yeah. Oh, look at that! We're out of time. See you next pandemic, Craig.

start monday TODAY "I’ll start saving money next pay check." "Exercise can wait until my life calms down."
Stop putting off the things that you want to do. Even if you can’t do them at what you feel is 100% just yet. Even if they scare you. (If they scare you that's probably a sign it's something you should be doing but that's a whole different discussion all together)
“I’ll make myself a priority when my kids go high school” Just start. Today. You’d be surprised at the amount of progress you’ll make in life if you stop waiting for the ‘right moment’ to do something and just do it instead. The greatest fear happens in the moment leading up to something. Once you’ve started you’ll notice the fear often disappears. It’s never as bad as you’ve made it out to be in your head. So often we sit stagnant, afraid to get started… listening to all of our brain’s valid and compelling reasons also to why now not a good time… the reality is is now is a perfect time.
You gotta start with a little so you can have a lot.
In fact now is THE perfect time. Ask anyone who’s started something… even if they failed, they will rarely regret the act of starting. In fact one of the things people often do regret the most is waiting so long to get started. It won’t be easy. It won’t be perfect. It won’t be like the movies. It won’t be like social media. There will be bumps in the road. It will be a road less traveled. You might stop a few times. You might get overwhelmed. You might have to find the courage to start again. But it will be a start. It will be your start. It won't be like anyone else's start. And starting is all that’s keeping you from getting that thing, your thing, whatever that is for you. There’s a Chinese proverb that goes something like “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today.”

As our community and the world adapt to the recent global health challenges, there’s an increased importance on helping our friends, neighbours and small business community. From new curbside & contactless pick up options, to strict in-person dining and shopping safety protocols - businesses have balanced what’s right with what’s sustainable and feasible, all with the goal of still being here once we’re past this. Re-strategizing can take several months to execute properly. But our local businesses have done it over a few weeks, which speaks loudly to their perseverance and resourcefulness. Of all the components that fuel a local business, awareness and local support are key ingredients (especially during a pandemic!).
72 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2020
With this exact sentiment in mind, the Mississauga Made “Support Local” Movement was created. Mississauga Made is a local initiative, developed by Tourism Mississauga, in partnership with Economic Development Office and supported by the City of Mississauga. Together, they’ve stepped up to provide assistance via the new “Mississauga Made” campaign, which launched this June, with the introduction of the free Mississauga Made Marketplace in August. Mississauga Made is an online initiative inspired to support and promote everything local. Not only locally made products and
businesses, but also local artists, stories and experiences within our community. The Mississauga Made marketplace is a free promotional advertising opportunity for all locally-based businesses. With nearly 100,000 small businesses in our city, our Mississauga residents are encouraged now more than ever, to Join the Movement and stand together in support of locally-based businesses, services and talents within our community. Their objective is to create a centralized hub for all things Mississauga made so locals, visitors and or other businesses can shop, source and support one another. Mayor Bonnie Crombie says “During these challenging times, our local businesses have shown compassion, empathy, concern and charity and now it is our opportunity to give back and stand together as a country and a community,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie.
“This is also why we launched Mississauga Made, our very own buy and shop local campaign back in June. Small businesses are essential to our economy and need our help now more than ever. I encourage everyone to stand behind our vibrant small business community and help them recover by shopping and dining locally.” The Mississauga Made marketplace features hundreds of local listings from a diverse mix of business categories with new listings being added frequently. The easy-to-use website enables residents to quickly and easily find new, local businesses in their neighbourhood. From local restaurants to nearby salons, or freelance photographers and one-of-a-kind shops – Mississauga Made is bringing business and community members together.

With the change of season from sunny Summer to elegant Autumn, here are changes you should make as the leaves and air become crisp.
Gutter Cleaning
As the leaves escape the trees, they’ll either meet the ground or be intercepted by your gutters. The issue is that with clogged gutters, the rain has nowhere to escape to and can potentially enter your house. So jump on a ladder and safely do it yourself or fire up the internet and hire a company to do it for you.
Draft Defender
Check your windows and exterior doors for drafts using a candle (if it flickers, you’ve got an issue) as you shouludn’t be paying to heat the outside of your house. Whether it’s re-caulking or installing new weather stripping, make sure the heat stays indoors.
Clean Your Oven
Since you’ll likely be indoors more often, chances are you’ll be spending additional time cooking. Whether it’s your oven, Instant Pot, toaster oven, microwave or any other small kitchen cooking appliance, give it a thorough cleaning.
78 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2020
Tap Out
Make sure all your exterior water taps/pipes/valves are closed before the weather dips below zero to avoid burst/frozen pipes and the impending watery mess.
Chim Chimney
Before you get your chimney and fireplace ready for warmth and social media accounts, have it thoroughly cleaned so it works efficiently.
Clean House
Dust and clean thoroughly since you’ll be spending more time as the mercury dips. Cobwebs, dust bunnies, beneath and behind furniture, get it all.
A Functioning Furnace
Get your furnace inspected every autumn before it gets cold as it’s easier to live without one for a few days now opposed to winter. Also change/clean your filter for maximum efficiency. (My furnace broke on Christmas Eve 2012 because I opted against having it inspected in September.)
tumn Muddy Waters
Bring out your rubber floor mat because in a season full of rain, you’ll likely bring home some mud along your travels.
Fill’er Up
Check your driveway for any cracks and fill them because just like on the roads, road cracks expand and are a costly fix come spring time.
Change Of Season
Put fresh batteries in your smoke alarms carbon monoxide detectors. It’s as simple as that.
Flip The Switch
Reversing the direction of your ceiling fan creates an upward draft and distributes warm air from the ceiling. It also saves money that you can then spend on supporting our local businesses.
Covered Up
If you use your air conditioner in Winter, skip this point. If you do not, put a fitted cover or tarp on it to keep leaves/ice/ debris out of it.
Winter Is Coming…
And you should use Autumn as an opportunity to make sure your shovels are in good shape. Pick up some sand or salt before the crowds take them all, along with an ice scraper for your car.
Speak Moistly
Well, maybe not but with the dry air, pull out your humidifiers and give them a thorough cleaning so that maybe you can speak moistly opposed to dryly.
Proof Your Roof
Whether it’s your or someone else, see what’s up with your roof and if it needs repairs or replacing before the weather turns.

Finally, The Rush Hour You WANT to be Stuck In by praveen amirtharaj Everyone in the GTA knows how brutal the afternoon drive home traffic can be. But Sauga960AM has just launched an exciting new show that just might make that horrible commute home, the best part of your day. Starting September 8th Sauga960AM is launching their new afternoon drive show -The Rush Hour with John Scholes and Elvira Caria. Both are very familiar voices to GTA audiences. Scholes began his broadcasting career in 1998 at Q107 in Toronto. From intern (aka coffee-getter) to overnight producer and eventually producer of The Howard Stern Show. The call came shortly thereafter to pull up a microphone and entertain the good listenership of the Mighty Q! In addition to hosting various shows on sister station Global News Radio AM640, John began his foray into TV, hosting shows on Global & CTV. Caria began her career as City News Reporter for The Toronto Sun, covering stories from festivals to homicides. Eventually she left her Toronto Sun reporter position to pursue a career in radio news, as a Central Ontario News Reporter at Bayshore Broadcasting in Owen Sound. Subsequently, she worked in the newsroom at Rock 95 in Barrie, as well as Corus Radio Hamilton,

HITZ 97.7 St Catharines, before heading back to hometown Toronto. Although Elvira has spent the majority of her career in a news room, her love of music has allowed her to “cross over” to the other side, becoming one of the most dynamic On-Air Radio Personalities in the GTA, best known as the original Morning Show Co-Host at Z103.5, or the Psychedelic Psunday chick on Q107 and AM640. Scholes and Caria have teamed up again to bring their brand of humour through their unique perspective on the world we live in. Along with providing the best and most detailed West End traffic, The Rush Hour will be about its audience. Caria’s mantra has always been “let the audience be the show”. While Scholes echoes the same, “It’s the audience that drives what we talk about on our show daily – we want to hear from them as often as we can” So sit back, grab the steering wheel and fire up the Bluetooth and let The Rush Hour be the best drive of your day.

DRIVING CHANGE IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY by paulina pojedyniec
Having two older brothers, I was treated as “one of the boys” and taken to car meet ups and mechanic shops as I was growing up. It was the highlight of my week when I got to see a car having work done and being taught basic knowledge that I still carry to this day. Fast forward to my early 20’s. I was carefully choosing a career path and initially, automotive wasn’t on my list. After purchasing my first car, a 2018 Nissan Rogue, my perspective changed. I opened my mind up to the idea of selling cars and helping women feel more comfortable through the process. There were, however, concerns. I worried that I wouldn’t be taken seriously, too young, and being a female may impede my progress. What moved me forward was knowing I could drive change and further open the door for other women to enter. I started with Woodchester Nissan in January 2020 and while I’ve experienced normal growing pains, the experience has been wonderful, educational and supportive. Between the Glen Peacock (General Manager) and Shaun Kazemi
(General Sales Manager) I’ve learned the proper and honest process, subjected to their decades of experience, celebrated when I win and encouraged when I don’t. It’s all part of the growth process and I learn something new every day about the industry I love. After nearly a year, I’m still happy I decided to move forward and can truly say I love my career and am thankful for those who have trusted me with their new car purchase. Yes, there are still challenges I face daily as I continuously grow and know that through dedication, perseverance and willingness to learn, I’ll be stronger. I’ve learned to educate clients who may discard me at first glance due to my age and gender. Change doesn’t happen quickly; it takes time to foster the right change and earn the respect of others. If you’re a female who’s curious about the automotive industry, I’m happy to have a conversation and share my journey in hopes of inspiring you.
