Editor's Letter Welcome to the Late Summer issue of Mississauga’s magazine; it’s so good to have you here!
As we cautiously move forward towards a new normal and as more vaccines are administered, we’re rediscovering outdoor life in and around Mississauga. Whether it’s making the most of what our city has to offer or packing the car for a road trip, there’s optimism in the air, and rightfully so. In conversation with talented singer/songwriter Bree Taylor. 1. DESCRIBE YOUR MUSICAL STYLE IN SIX WORDS OR LESS High energy, diverse, emotional and honest.
2. YOUR NEW SINGLE, KRYPTONITE, IS VERY RAW EMOTIONALLY AND WELL-WRITTEN. DESCRIBE THE WRITING PROCESS.
It was definitely an emotional one. I had been dating someone who was very non-committal and had me feeling like I was on an emotional roller coaster ride and I had to pour my emotions into a song so one night I just sat there in the thick of my emotions and poured my heart onto the paper and got my feelings out. I took what I had into my writing session with my co-writers Donny Anderson and Murray Daigle and we had a big therapy session and "Kryptonite" was born. I had a very specific intention with this song and writing session knowing what I wanted to say and the vibe of the song and Murray was amazing at bringing the song to life with production.
3. WHAT'S BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR MUSIC CAREER?
6. WHAT DO THE NEXT 12 MONTHS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU MUSICALLY?
I am hoping to release my debut album in Spring 2022. It is something that I have been working on for over two years and have been putting off until things are fully open and I can tour and promote the album. I hope to be able to book as many shows as possible with things reopening. There might be something special being released before the end of the year ;)
7. WITH YOUR PREVIOUS SONGS "CRY" AND "BURNING BRIDGES" ACHIEVING TREMENDOUS SUCCESS, WHAT PRESSURE DOES THAT PUT ON YOU FOR UPCOMING SONGS?
I think I always put pressure on myself with every single release. I work hard and put my blood, sweat and tears into my music, so each song has a special piece of my heart and there is always pressure to do better. I have big goals and I want to reach as many people as I can and be able to perform in stadiums, so the pressure is always on when it comes to getting myself there.
A cross Canada tour in 2018 with my first pop album "Unbreakable". I love performing and that was my first tour, a great learning experience and it helped me grow as an artist. Also, my recent nominations for the MARTY awards, Mississauga Music Awards and getting on the second ballot for Rising Star with the CMAOntario awards last year. I am grateful for every opportunity that I have been fortunate to have had and am excited for what’s ahead.
8. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'D CHANGE IN YOUR MUSICAL JOURNEY?

I always start a song with a story or intention and that usually leads into lyrics before music.
5. WHAT SUCCINCT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR UP AND COMING ARTISTS?
Everything happens for a reason and I try to live my life with no regrets. However, I would really love to have not been previously scammed by a manager and a publicist as it cost me thousands of dollars and those were really hard lessons. Independent artists are oftentimes taken advantage of.

Stay true to yourself. There is only one you so don't try to be anyone else; focus on what makes you unique. If it’s something you truly want, never give up no matter what someone else says or what the negative voices in your head may say. Believe in yourself and keep growing as a person and as an artist. Educate yourself as much as possible, do your research before hiring people for your team because there are vultures out there who still take advantage of artists unfortunately.

SOUTHSIDE SHUFFLE BLUES FESTIVAL RETURNS The Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle Blues Festival (The Festival) is pleased to announce that the festival will be returning to Memorial Park in September. ‘It’s been difficult to plan when you don’t know the rules. We know our fans have been anxiously waiting’, said Kristine Kane, Chair of the Southside Shuffle Board of Directors. ‘Our goal is to safely bring the joy of live music back to the Port Credit Community and bring awareness to Port Credit and Mississauga as a tourist destination. This year our focus is on musicians from Ontario and Quebec.’ Impressively, the positive economic impact to local businesses is over 7 million dollars. The Festival is always a cause for celebration amongst music lovers around the world. It earned a MARTY in 2018 for “Mississauga’s Best Festival” and in 2020, was recognized by Festivals and Events Ontario as one of the top 100 festivals and in 2021, received an Achievement Award for their virtual festival, viewed by over 25,000 globally. Although masks, social distancing requirements and capacity limits will be in place, the festival will safely host two stages. The south stage is free with seating for 120 in the beer tent and room in front of the stage for people bringing lawn chairs/blankets. The ticketed stage in the north end will have limited general admission tickets on the grass (500 due to capacity limits) as well a limited number of tickets (120) for the reserved Bourbon Street tent. There will also be 3 food trucks at both stages. With very short notice to reopen, they could not safely plan for the vendor village. Tickets will be available through Eventbrite and a limited number though Impressionable Gifts (cash only.) Weekend general admission passes are $35 and a single day ticket is $15. Weekend passes for Bourbon Street are $80 and $30 for a single day pass. Enjoy many of the much Street Shuffle bands at the south end of the park, along with plenty of live entertainment in many local establishments. On Sunday September 12th at 11:00 am, take in the Mississauga Music Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony. Chuck Jackson, Artist Director and founder, credits the “great” Board members, a dedicated crew of over 300 volunteers, sponsors, the City of Mississauga, Port Credit BIA, Port Credit Community Foundation and the various
levels of government (Heritage Canada, Ontario Creates & Ontario Trillium Foundation) which provide funding. Since launching in 1999, The Festival has drawn hundreds of thousands of people and set new standards for excellence and growth, earning wides spread, well-deserved accolades.

However, I’m a firm believer that life is made infinitely better with a good soundtrack. continued... Road Trip! THE BLUE STONES – HIDDEN GEMS
While I’ve never been much of a driver, life can be made infinitely better behind the wheel with the right album. I recently had the good fortune to get to test out the 2021 Kia Sorento X-Line and took a drive up to Algonquin Park for a few days in the woods. As I hit the road early on a Monday morning, I was blessed with minimal traffic, a smooth-as-silk suspension, and an incredible sound system. I threw on Hidden Gems from Windsor’s own The Blue Stones and nodded my head to the beat in smooth satisfaction. This album was the perfect start to a road trip, and I really felt the Sorento and I digging into the road by the time we hit track 7, LA Afterlife. Click here to check out the album!
Pitching a Tent THE NOBLE ROGUES – AUTOMATA
Maybe I’m weird, but I actually really enjoy setting up camp when I first arrive: gathering wood, building a fire, pitching a tent. Though this may be exceptionally narcissistic and self-indulgent, I’ve often been known to throw on my own band’s music when out in the woods. If you’d like to camp the way I do, I recommend playing The Noble Rogues’ latest EP, Automata. Each of the four tracks will have you snapping together poles and pounding in stakes with ease, though I’m personally partial to Sleep When You’re Dead. Click here to check out the album!
At the Cottage ESPANOLA - ESPANOLA
If you’re looking for something to break up the Kim Mitchell monotony at the cottage, why not give a spin to Aaron Goldstein’s love note to rock n roll, Espanola. The self-titled album is a beautiful fusion of rock, psychedelic, blues, and bluegrass. Hailing originally from, you guessed it, Espanola, ON, Goldstein now runs a studio out of Toronto where he continues to record superb Canadian tunes, such as one of my personal favourites, That Old Feeling. Park Beers THE OBGMS – THE ENDS
With bars being closed off and on for over a year, many of us opted to catch up with friends over beers in a safer, sunnier, and slightly illegal setting: the park. Armed with a makeshift cooler of tallboys and a Bluetooth speaker, I typically opted for harder rock and punk, such as the phenomenal 2020 release by Toronto’s The OBGMs: The Ends. I love this album for its raw energy, catchy riffs, and infectious beats; no better emblemized than by Fight Song. Click here to check out the album!
On the Beach KAYTRANADA - BUBBA
If the sun held out through the weekend and things got really nice, I and many other like me, sought relaxation and rays on one of the many beaches dotting along the shores of lake Ontario. These chill days of relaxing waterside required equally chill tunes from Montreal’s own Kaytranada. His latest LP Bubba can get hips moving, turning any sandy surfside into a instant beach club. On the Water TOR – OASIS SKY
If you’re like Modern Mississauga Editor, Jay Kana, and managed to snag yourself some sort of sea-worthy vessel (even if it is just a kayak), the pandemic has been a great time to get out on the water. I even had a socially-distanced kayak date once! To help you smoothly cruise through the rippling waves, I recommend playing some tunes by Vancouver’s Tor. His 2021 release, Oasis Sky, is a beautifully meditative electronic album that one can lose themselves into while thinking ‘left, right, left, right… don’t flip the thing’. Romantic Picnic DANIEL CAESAR – CASE STUDY 01
As the sun slowly fades behind the tree-line and day gives way to dusk, us romantic types like to pull out the checkered blanket and unpack a romantic picnic for two. Be sure to also pack the right tunes to set the mood, such as Scarborough’s own Daniel Caesar. His latest full-length effort CASE STUDY 01, is an R&B masterpiece. Yard Work WIDE MOUTH MASON – I WANNA GO WITH YOU
Summer also means that there will be no end of projects around the house and yard work to be done. Personally, I like to pair getting dirt under my fingers with something a bit bluesy, and even after 3 decades of listening, Saskatoon’s Wide Mouth Mason always does the trick. Their latest album, I Wanna Go With You, shows the band in a more stripped down format, featuring more blues standards and lap guitar. Just listen to Bodies in Motion. Around the Campfire TIM BAKER – FOREVER OVERHEAD
Whether you’re plunking away some tunes on a guitar or listening to a speaker around the fire, I’ve always been partial to the music of Hey Rosetta! frontman Tim Baker. In his first solo album after years with HR!, baker assembles an incredible session of poetic, relatable songs that provide the perfect backdrop to staring into the flames. Though the chord fingerings may be tricky to learn on this one, I’ve always loved the opening track, Dance. Click here to check out the album!
Long Weekend THE TRAGICALLY HIP - SASKADELPHIA
In this country, long weekends can really only mean one thing to me: The Tragically Hip. While Gord is gone and missed, the band has recently been going through rarities and unreleased songs from past sessions. Earlier this year, a collection of B-sides from the Road Apples sessions were released under the oh-so-Canadian moniker Saskadelphia. TRYING OUT THE RV LIFE

As a long-time road trip aficionado, I’ve often dreamed of owning an RV. And this year the urge was stronger than ever. It turned out I wasn’t the only one RV dreaming. According to a CTV news report, there’s been a spike in sales since the pandemic with a significantly higher mix of first-time buyers.
But a part of me had doubts. What if we couldn’t drive it? What if we all drove each other crazy? What if we couldn’t figure out the sewer system like in the Robin Williams’ comedy movie? So we decided to try it out before investing and hit the road with a Midi Motorhome from CanaDream. This Canadian-based company has a fleet of over 1000 RVs in cities across the country, including Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Whitehouse, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. Their vehicles range from Van Campers designed for two to the Maxi Plus Motorhome that fits four adults and three children comfortably. We chose the
Midi Motorhome, which was roomy enough to give our teenage daughter some privacy and had everything our own home had but on a smaller scale: air conditioner, furnace, shower, toilet, refrigerator, freezer, a queensized bed, two twin beds and dining table.
1000 Islands
Our first destination was the beautiful 1000 Islands, located three hours east of Toronto. We picked a private campground, the Ivy League KOA, both for its location and amenities, particularly internet as my daughter still had three days left of classes. With its outdoor pool, huge bouncy ‘pillow’

continued... trampoline, hiking trails and store, it felt like a family-friendly resort. Highlights included:
Biking the St. Lawrence Recreational Trail.
Running along the 1000 Island Parkway, this scenic off-road route stretches from Gananoque to Butternut Bay, near Brockville. It was an absolute pleasure to ride with views of the St. Lawrence, attractions en route and even wildlife sightings. We were thrilled to encounter a fox one of our rides. The bike path was accessible from the campground, and it was approximately 15 km to the pretty town of Gananoque, where we had lunch at Stonewater Pub.

Only a 20-minute bike ride from our campsite, this 225-acre property is part of the 1000 Island National Park, which consists of 26 islands and parts of the mainland. The trails took us through all the features of the UNESCO-recognized Biosphere Reserve: old growth forest, ancient granite outcroppings and marshlands. The Lookout Trail led us to a huge granite slab atop a hill looking over

Landon Bay, the St. Lawrence River and a few of the region’s 1864 islands. The Avalanche Pass lived up to its name with boulders big and small strewn along it and a wooden platform provided a view of an osprey nest, a majestic eagle-like bird native to the region. It was everything we could have wished for in a hike, including a wishing tree, circa 1850. My wish came true watching my teenage daughter climb the tree.
Merrickville
On the road again, we headed to Merrickville, an endearing village on the banks of the Rideau Canal about 80 kms south of Ottawa. The small town charmed us immediately with its main street lined with boutiques, artist studios and cafés as well as its locks surrounded by picnic-table-dotted parkland. And our campsite, The Lions Club of Merrickville Campground, was located right on the canal and smack dab in the middle of it all.

were first on the agenda. Treats in hand, we wandered over to watch a boat navigate the locks on the canal. We picked up a few provisions, including some freshly baked sour dough bread and scones at Nana Bs, a family-run bakery that came highly recommended. Next, a patio dinner and people watching at Main Street Family Restaurant. An evening stroll watching the sunset from the shores of the river finished off our day.
Ottawa
After a morning paddle board jaunt, we followed the Rideau Canal, driving up to our nation’s capital. Our home for the next two nights was the Wesley Clover Campground. Though it was just a 20-minute drive from downtown, you’d never know it. Our site was surrounded by forest, and as we breathed the oxygen-rich air, we felt more relaxed than we had for a long time. Highlights included:

Ottawa has an impressive 980 kilometres of bike trails. We parked our RV at the Canadian
Food and Agricultural Museum and cycled along the canal to the city center to see the parliament buildings. Since every good bike ride deserves a reward, we stopped for succulent desserts and a cappuccino at the Canal Ritz, a patio overlooking the canal.

On this yet another stellar bike ride, we were able to access the trails straight from our campsite and traversed sections of the trans-Canada trail before pedalling along the Ottawa River. We stopped often to enjoy some of the parks along the way. Once again, I was struck by the vastness of Ottawa’s green spaces. We even saw deer on the trail. There was so much more we wanted to do in Ottawa, but our week was over, and we reluctantly drove back to Toronto and handed over the keys.
Verdict?
We thoroughly enjoyed our first RV adventure with CanaDream. What we appreciated most was having such a high level of comfort so close to nature. If the
temperature dipped, we turned on the furnace. Too hot? The air conditioner worked in minutes. When the bugs got bad at dusk, we played cards inside for a bit until it was safe for a campfire and s’mores. We slept well, which meant we had the energy to make the most of our active vacation. None of our worries materialized. Driving was a challenge at the beginning but got easier as we learned to take our time and stay off the busier highways. The interior was spacious and well-designed with more than enough room for our family. And there were no Robin-Williams-like moments disposing the waste. So, are we buying an RV? We’re seriously thinking about it. Would we rent a CanaDream again? Absolutely! canadream.com

There’s plenty to unpack here for enjoying the breathtaking 1000 Islands region. It’s one of my favourite places to visit in Canada as there’s a plethora of things to see, do and experience. I had a splendid summer visit this year with excellent experiences and making connections with new friends. Special thanks to the team at BMW Canada for providing the perfect traveling companion; a 2021 M5 Competition.
LYNDHURST BERRY HOMESTEAD FARM
My previous interactions with donkeys were by watching the Shrek movies. I don’t have anything against them; I’d simply not crossed paths with one… until my visit with Annick and Jean-Sebastien, owners of the off-grid Berry Homestead Farm in lovely Lyndhurst. Their drove of donkeys were quite affectionate, gently nuzzling up to me and asking for pets and pats, which I happily obliged with. Annick walked me through how these beautiful animals are used for therapy and meditation on-site, how they’re quite intelligent, how soap is made from their milk and that they make a trusty hiking companion. They really are underrated and magnificent animals. Their self-sustaining farm includes growing their own vegetables, chickens/turkeys, there are bee hives and a solar panel grid. After an hour visit, I felt I’d known them for years and left with a stronger appreciation for both donkeys and how they’re carefully reducing their ecological footprint in a modern world. The hub for the 1000 Islands region is here; let’s go through some highlights of their dining scene. Anthony’s Restaurant is best enjoyed upon a beautifully lit patio, complete with a view of a creative street mural. Scan the menu for casual dining favourites including pastas, wraps, and sandwiches; the burger and hot wings did it for me! The Old English Pub has a new quaint patio that seems to make the beer taste better and the food more delicious. (Maybe it was due to the perfect summer night in late July when I was there.) Captain Obvious is here to mention what’s on the menu - pub favourites! Choose from fish and chips, burgers, salads, wings and a few other hunger-solving items. Where is the service as sweet as the food? Easy: Panache Bakery & Café. How I didn’t order one of everything is beyond me. What I can speak it is their fresh, flakey, buttery, absolutely perfect croissants and fresh coffee, which made my morning that much better. Laverne’s Eatery is easily found in the heart of Gananoque and serves up oh-so-good baked goods. Everything is made with love and fresh, seasonal ingredients, including free-range eggs and real butter. The kitchen is open so you can watch them create delicious goodness. Get a birds-eye view via the team at 1000 Islands Helicopter Tours and see one of my favourite parts of Canada from high above. You won’t be faulted if your smartphone camera is constantly clicking to capture the captivating scenery. Once you’ve returned to solid ground, pop over to Canada's largest outdoor contemporary art exhibit, found at at Confederation Park. The sculptures are quite creative, the Gananoque River provides a calming backdrop and if you go on a sunny day, you can get some stellar reflection shots via the water. To recharge between days, head over to the Howard Johnson Inn in town for a clean room, pool access, and friendly staff that are happy to see you. Ample parking awaits, along with a pet-friendly environment and you’ll always be minutes away from everything Gananoque. Start planning your visit to the 1000 Islands region where you’ll create thousands of memories.
In the wonderful world of Westport, Foley Mountain awaits. To get a picturesque panoramic view of Westport, use the Blue Circle Trail and in a couple of minutes, you’ll arrive at the Spy Rock Lookout Point. The 3.2 km trail has two gems in the form of benches that look out upon Westport; keep an eye out for them and enjoy the silence and serenity for a few minutes on them. After you’ve bolstered your daily step count at Foley Mountain, take the short drive through Westport and soak in all the beauty Scheuermann’s Winery has to offer. Make sure there’s room on your phone for all the pictures you’ll snap of the grounds, especially since it overlooks Westport Sand Lake. Roam the winery and enjoy the views and atmosphere before digging into the wine and food menu. Their wood-fired pizzas are delightfully delicious and their variety of wines include Vidal, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. You’ve explored Foley Mountain and refuelled at Scheuermann’s; stroll the streets of this charming village that boasts a small-town feel in a modern world. One of our coolest community hubs is Celebration Square and there’s a long list of reasons to visit often. As of August, over 71% of Ontario adults are fully vaccinated, and over 81% have received one dose, both strong figures in the means of arming ourselves against COVID-19. As The Beatles say, it’s been a “long and winding road” over the past 20 months and the past few months have shown that our march toward a new modern is being done with confidence. As I’ve seen our city via car, bike, kayak, hiking and walking, there are more smiles on faces, more laughter, and a lighter mood envelops Mississauga. Patios have fewer and fewer empty seats, there’s more pedestrian traffic, more bikes. Online, the posts are steadily becoming increasingly positive with people showing off how they’re supporting local, where their vacations/getaways are that are within a few hours of the city, and generally upbeat and positive. Summer in our city wasn’t the same in 2020 but from what I’ve seen so far in 2021, we’re making up for lost time but not tipping the scales in excess. The important aspect to keep in mind is that we’re not fully done with COVID; or should I say COVID isn’t fully done with us with the Delta variant on the horizon. That being said, the push to get fully vaccinated is more imminent than ever to increase resistance to the new variant. With Step 3’s freedoms, I feel that it’ll help accelerate those who want both jabs to get them. We’ve soldiered through the trenches for almost two years and with the end-of-the-tunnel light becoming increasingly bright, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to return to the proverbial trenches.
Does the warmer weather play a contributing factor in the upbeat attitude in our city? Sure. The stronger player here is the double vaxxing and the increased mobility it provides. Thankfully, Mississauga’s leadership team has taken COVID seriously and reacted well to help keep residents safe through all three steps. And fortunately, it hasn’t mirrored the next higher level of government, which certainly hasn’t helped. Small business owners who have weathered the storm are now seeing in-person visits (safely, of course) and with them comprising 90% off all businesses in Mississauga, this is one instance where I’d happily wait in a line up if it means supporting our community. And based off what I’ve seen around town, I’m not the only one. Before I wrap this up, I do understand the realism of where we are. Yes, the air of optimism is wonderful and we’re rediscovering our communities with fewer restrictions. Know that there are still some restrictions in place and that not everyone will share your opinion on the validity of COVID or the vaccine. All you can do is present facts and scientific data/proof from verified sources; you can’t force someone into sharing how you feel and think.
For now, let’s safely enjoy the latter half of summer in Mississauga and hope that we can keep moving forward together as a community.

STEELHEADS by matt cullen Matt Cullen, the radio voice of the Mississauga Steelheads recently sat down with the Owner/President of the Mississauga Steelheads to talk about the year without hockey, how it impacted him, the team and the sport and what the future holds:
Matt Cullen: What are you most excited about when the puck finally drops in October?
Elliott Kerr: I can’t wait to hear the fans back in the facility
and seeing our family of season ticket holders face-to-face. I also can’t wait to see our billet families and clearly, our players. I know, understand and feel the frustration of all these groups. It’s been a difficult period of time but once the feel of hockey comes back, the smell of hockey, the atmosphere of hockey, I think we’ll soon forget what we’ve lost over the last 16-18 months and just enjoy that hockey is back.

to protect our players, staff and fans. A lot of that will be driven by the guidelines set out by the province. Whatever we are asked to do, believe me, we will do more. That also applies when we reach out to schools and minor hockey. We are going to need to reinvent what we usually do so safety protocols are part of the process. We have to be ready to adapt.

It’s a valid question as the process starts to shift into a more localized delivery. You can also call them at 905 791 5202 8am to 8pm which offers language supports as well. • Pharmacies are another great source, but it can feel hard to find out what is offered and where. You can use filters such as hours, vaccine type and location COVID-19 pharmacy vaccine locations (ontario.ca) to make sure you find what you are looking for! • Community outreach is a key part of how we will get there as Jill Promili found of For Jude For Everyone says “Ontarians have done a great job stepping up to get vaccinated, but we only get to the other side of this together. We need to work now to reach people in our communities who haven’t yet been vaccinated with local efforts driven by empathy.” Our communities have been stepping up with flyer deliveries, social media outreach, and fun events to encourage participation. There’s this common misconception that many people have when faced with the prospect of trying something new specifically when it comes to sports and other activities that require moving your body - that you need to be good at something in order to participate in it. It turns out that how good you are at a sport has no bearing on your ability to extract the benefits of physically participating in these activities. To help you say “Yes” the next time your friend asks you to sub in to their ultimate frisbee league because they’re short a player or pump up the tires on that old bike and go for a ride on the weekend check out some of these awesome benefits of playing new sports this summer.
1. NEW SPORTS CAN HELP YOUR BRAIN GROW
We all know the physical benefits of being active but we don’t often discuss the benefits that extend beyond that. Studies show that developing and executing motor skills that are new can be equally challenging cognitively as other intellect-based activities (think sudoku). Learning new sports often requires you to learn new movement patterns which can promote positive brain growth that typically doesn’t occur much during adulthood otherwise.
4. DEVELOP ACTIVE FRIENDSHIPS
Getting and staying active in a variety of ways not only brings you the opportunity to interact with a larger group of people but will also help you forge friendships with individuals who will often be like minded in their enjoyment and pursuit of physical activities. Join a volleyball team and they might invite you to go on a hike or play some frisbee with them on an upcoming weekend. Your golf buddies might challenge you to walk a round instead of taking a cart. The wider the variety of sports you sample the wider you cast your net when it comes to finding a ‘fitness support group’ of sorts that goes a long way to helping you maintain an active lifestyle. Remember that while it’s always important to ease into new activities you can’t get the benefits of being active sitting on the couch waiting until you get ‘in-shape’ to be active. Play and try new sports often, and try not to worry about if you’re good at them or not. Remember the key is to have fun and be active at every opportunity you have.
2. HELP DECREASE YOUR RISK OF INJURY
It turns out that people that participate in a variety of activities on a regular basis have improved neuromuscular control when compared with people who just participate in a single activity all the time. While this is extremely important for young athletes who are developing fundamental motor control skills at young ages the benefits of this still extend to all ages.
3. BENEFIT FROM ACTIVE REST DAYS
While it’s necessary to take days off of the gym or any intense sport you’re pursuing there’s a growing body of evidence advocating for ‘Active Rest’ days which involve you moving your body, getting the blood flowing while participating in a recreational activity at a lower intensity than you would a competitive sport or gym session. If you’re already heavily involved in a sport or physical activity that you take fairly seriously, picking up a recreational activity that you can approach with a more ‘fun’ attitude can serve as great stress relief from the rest of your training or the other responsibilities in your week.

For many years, “the core” has been a buzzword in fitness. From crunches to planks, “engage your core” has been the focus of many strength training routines. But there is a fundamental misunderstanding of what the core actually is. The core is not just two parts (front and back) as many believe. It’s actually four parts: front, back, top and, the most fundamental part, the bottom, also known as the pelvic floor. When your pelvic floor isn’t functioning properly, problems like chronic pain, incontinence and prolapse can arise, even if you aren’t a “little old lady” or have recently given birth (as the TV commercials would have you believe). But beyond this, pelvic floor dysfunction can seriously hinder your big-picture fitness and movement goals. Here are three reasons why you need to pay attention to your pelvic floor:
#1: IT’S YOUR FOUNDATION
Think of your pelvic floor as your foundation. If your foundation is weak, everything else is negatively impacted — a ripple effect is created throughout your entire body. Having a strong, properly functioning pelvic floor helps manage not only leaking, prolapse and pain, but also keeps your hips, knees, back, and shoulders in proper alignment too. With proper alignment, your body is able to execute movement more efficiently, making each exercise you do more effective.
#2: KEEPS YOU INJURY FREE
A direct effect of proper alignment is that you will be less likely to sustain an injury. Oftentimes, the root of an injury is improper alignment. When you address the “core” of the issue and practice good alignment from a foundational level (i.e., your pelvic floor), your whole body will be working more effectively, thereby reducing the chance of a movement-related injury.
#3: IT’S GOOD FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
Nearly 3.5 million Canadians suffer from some form of incontinence, and recent studies are showing the negative impacts leaking can have on your mental health. Anxiety about leaking can lead to depression, low selfworth and isolation. Exercise and movement has been shown time and time again to have a positive effect on mental health, so if you can address the pelvic floor dysfunction at a base level, reducing (or even eliminate) leakage, then your much more likely to embrace movement and positively affect how you feel about yourself!

striving to empower youth to learn and build with artificial intelligence Co-Presidents, Andrew Shao and Eugene Zhang, are running the annual hackathon with the support of the Canadian-Federal Government’s #RisingYouth Grant, which supports communitydriven events. The 36-hour event, set to take place on August 20-22 2021, is expected to garner around 450 participants and a variety of speakers, sponsors, and workshops! Hackers who participate can expect to see around $3000 worth of prizes, and lots of swag. Anyone who is 13-19 years of age and in school are eligible to participate.

Stop wondering — it absolutely is! Let’s break down four reasons why staging is so important, especially in the current housing climate. First, home buyers’ urgency is massively increased. With heightened urgency, many buyers are finding that they are more attracted to the beautifully staged homes because it reduces the amount of time and brain power it takes to imagine what the space could look like after the purchase, and therefore they are more likely to put an offer in immediately. Today, active buyers want to get a home and want to get it fast. Staging propels the decision forward by allowing buyers to visualize the logistics of the home without investing too much mind-space.

TES PROCEDURES by daniela fonseca The field of estates in Ontario has been long overdue for an update or at least some changes to address the complaints that administering estates takes too long or is too expensive. With the introduction of the Smarter and Stronger Justice Act 2020, there are some changes that have been introduced that aim to modernize and (hopefully) improve access to the justice system, particularly in the area of estates. The Smarter and Stronger Justice Act 2020 introduced changes to the Estates Act, which came into force on April 1, 2021. These changes introduced a new Small Estates rule 74.1 under the current Rules of Civil Procedure, which among other civil matters direct certain procedures involved in the administration of estates in Ontario.

A small estate is now defined as an estate valued under $150,000.
Rules of Civil Procedure
Under the Rules of Civil Procedure, an individual looking to receive confirmation of their authority to act as an administrator or executor of the small estate of a deceased person can now apply for a ‘Small Estate Certificate’ instead of a ‘Certificate of Appointment of Estate Trustee’. This change will ideally streamline the process for smaller estates that might otherwise not be administered due to the perception of high cost and inconvenience relative to the size of the estate. The application under the ‘Small Estate’ route involves filing an application for small estate certificate, proof of death, an original will (if applicable) along with proof of due execution such as an affidavit of execution of one of the witnesses. All persons entitled to a share in the estate must also be notified of the application and provided with a copy of the will. The application may not be filed until 30 days after complying with this notice requirement. It is a more condensed application compared with the ordinary procedure of obtaining a Certificate of Appointment of Estate Trustee, however the
certificate itself for a Small Estate does require a list of all assets to be listed because the trustee will be limited to administering only those specific assets. This is a significant difference from a Certificate of Appointment. Though not necessarily a bad thing, if the applicant discovers other assets outside of those specified in the Small Estate Certificate after having obtained it, which results in an estate valued in excess of $150,000, the applicant will need to pursue the ordinary route of obtaining a Certificate of Appointment. This may result in further delay and higher costs so it is important that an applicant ensures they make careful inquiries about the assets of the estate. Under the ordinary procedure, applicants for certificates of appointment in certain situations may be asked to post security called an ‘administrative bond’, which can be up to double the value of the estate. In a small estate application, this requirement does not apply as long as there are no minors or beneficiaries under disability. The introduction of these changes will hopefully result in speedier administration of small estates at a lower cost. The goal is that an estate that would otherwise be left unsettled would instead be divided among the intended beneficiaries named in the will of the deceased or the next-of-kin if there is no will instead of potentially being transferred to the government. As always, it is recommended that potential executors/administrators for any estate, whether it is large or small, seek advice from a lawyer specialized in this area to understand their rights and obligations. Rosehill Wine Cellers at 1686 Mattawa Avenue has shipped wooden wine racks to upscale homes and restaurants in every province across Canada and to almost every State in the USA. Rosehill has sold their wares overseas too; there have been orders sent to Europe, Asia and Africa. They’ve shipped specialized wine storage shelving to ski chalets in the Rockies, cruise ships in the Caribbean, and vineyards with huge private cellars in Napa and Niagara Falls. Closer to home, Rosehill’s handiwork can be found in hundreds of hotel bars and in the basements of thousands of luxury homes across Ontario. Modern Mississauga readers may have seen lumber trucks delivering skids of raw materials to Rosehill's Mattawa Ave facility. The business processes around thirty-five hundred board feet of premium hardwood lumber per month, plus a hundred sheets of Baltic birch plywood, a dozen buckets of wood glue, several rolls of veneer edging and many other supplies. Most of the raw materials originate in Canada, but some wood species are imported from the United States, and both sapele and mahogony journey here from the other side of the world. The best wine cellar racking is made from maple, walnut, beech, white oak and California redwood. These woods are better suited to wine racks because they absorb vibrations, hold their shape in humid conditions, and are odourless which means the shelves' smell won’t affect the taste of the wine. Employees are proud to work at Rosehill and that’s because they get paid to handcraft custom wood shelving and wall cabinets in a creative space populated with like-minded enthusiasts. It’s a dream job for professional woodworkers and many use the firm’s well-appointed wood shop to produce their own projects after-hours. Once the rough lumber has been smoothed, routed and cut to the required lengths, the pieces advance to the assembly phase. Senior cabinetmakers with many years of experience follow detailed plans to join the parts together as wall cabinets and wine racks.
Last are the finishing touches which include staining, lacquering, and waxing certain woods. Sliders, hinges, glass panels and LED lights are installed where necessary and the pieces are wrapped for transport. Rosehill has an installation team which works offsite building wine cellars in residential homes and businesses. Rosehill Wine Cellars has already been profiled by some of the most prestigious design magazines in the world, and their gorgeous commercial cellar projects are regularly discussed on TripAdvisor and Yelp, but few Mississauga residents realize this business exists and is in their neighbourhood. Rosehill Wine Cellars’ Showroom is open 10am to 6pm most days and this attraction is filled with cellar accoutrements. This retail store is a must-visit shopping destination for anyone storing wine.
