LONDON an artist’s-eye view

modul-dance

Modul-dance is a multi-annual cooperation project with the participation of 20 European dancehouses from 16 countries.

One of the project’s key elements is the promotion of mobility, so that artists receiving its support follow itineraries across Europe to develop their creative work and present it to different audiences.

Each of the guides in this collection shows a city from the viewpoint of a local artist, who proposes his or her own particular route to artists in transit, seeking to put them in connection with their host city. While these city routes share some basic features, each one is different and in their differences lies a wealth of gazes, aesthetics, approximations to the local and much more. In a word, they form a mirror of the diversity that modul-dance has always fostered.

The London city guide has been possible thanks to the curatorial work of The Place, a partner in the modul-dance project.

Evangelia Kolyra presents London

Evangelia Kolyra is a Greek born London-based independent choreographer and dancer, who is interested in choreographing within theatre spaces, site-specific, film, and installation contexts. Evangelia’s work aims to offer audiences a kinaesthetically rich experience of the unexpected, humorous, and sometimes dark or sinister sides to the psychology of human experience, presented within highly detailed and physically demanding choreography. Her work has been featured in various platforms and festivals in Europe (England, Scotland, Greece, Italy, Sweden) and she is working towards developing a cross-disciplinary and highly collaborative practice. Evangelia has an MFA in Choreography from Roehampton University (UK), a BA in Dance from Professional Dance School D. Gregoriadou (Greece), and a BA in Greek Philology-Linguistics from National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece). evangeliakolyra.com

Lola Maury presents London

Lola Maury French of nationality, Lola Maury trained in Contemporary Dance in Madrid, where she lived for five years, to then base herself in London and study at London Contemporary Dance School (The Place) and Central School of Speech and Drama. Since then, she has developed her own projects and creations. Dense in its form, visceral in its flow and evocative in its use of movement, her work explores the possibilities to somatically impact an audience, keeping the spectator alert and with enhanced focus on his own as much as the performer’s body. Lola also cultivates an increasing interest towards active audience’s participation and has found herself focusing on the creation of immersive and interactive game structures in collaboration with Iris Musel (Limbic Production).

In parallel to her own work, Lola regularly performs for Eva Recacha as well as others, swapping from works for the stage, installations and street trails and has been a visiting lecturer in choreography at Birbeck University and London Contemporary Dance School on various occasions. lolamaury.com

Valentina Golfieri Valentina Golfieri trained at London Contemporary Dance School graduating with an MA in Performance. She joined Protein Dance in 2011, working as performer and assistant director. She works regularly with Arthur Pita as performer and rehearsal director. She has also performed for Frauke Requardt, David Rosenberg, Theatre-Rites, Clod Ensemble, Will Tuckett and Dam Van Huynh amongst others. With Amy Bell, she has created three pieces of work, the latest duet I Just Close My Eyes: Here Are The Devils premiered at The Place as Part of Spring Loaded 2013. Valentina is one of 15 choreographers who are part of Sadler’s Wells Summer University lead by Jonathan Burrows.

James Finnemore presents London

James Finnemore James Finnemore is a dance artist and choreographer. After graduation from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, James gained an apprenticeship with Hofesh Shechter Company, touring Uprising/In Your Rooms internationally. After his apprenticeship, he joined Carte Blanche, the national company of Norway, performing for one season with them. In 2010, he re-joined Hofesh Shechter Company, predominantly performing touring Political Mother. Since September 2013 he has been performing on Punchdrunk’s The Drowned Man. James has choreographed a number of dance works including Patriot. This premiered at Cloud Dance Festival and has since been performed in various UK venues as well as international festivals, earning an award for Best Choreographic Direction at ACT Festival Bilbao (Spain). In 2012, James created The Age as part of In Good Company, an initiative run by Hofesh Shechter Company where dancers are given time and resources to work on their own choreographic interests. The programme was taken on a tour of the South East performing in venues such as The Brighton Dome, The Robin Howard Theatre and Pavilion Dance. In early 2013, he was commissioned to create a new piece for students at Roehampton University entitled Parade. Last summer, he performed at Cloud Dance Festival again, presenting In The Dry, a solo that was a pre-study for my most recent work OH|GLORY. James is currently working on his latest choreographic work, which will premiere at The Place next spring. vimeo.com/85573477

Amy Bell is a contemporary dance performer, maker, teacher and writer. She has danced for Hussein Chalayan & Damien Jalet, Tino Sehgal, h2dance, Sally Marie’s Sweetshop Revolution, Marco D’Agostin, Giorgia Nardin, Conor Doyle and Charlotte Spencer amongst others. She worked as performer and rehearsal director for Maresa von Stockert’s Tilted Productions on theatre and site specific productions from 2007 to 2012.

With Valentina Golfieri, she has choreographed a series of duets performed in the UK, Italy and Russia and a chamber opera for Wilton’s Music Hall. This year, Amy has been awarded a Lisa Ullmann Travelling Scholarship Fund to develop the solo Small Pleasures (For Her) in San Francisco. Amy is project writer for Performing Gender, a European project for performance on gender and sexuality in gallery spaces. She took part in ChoreoRoam Europe 2012 and is a member of The Hunting Lodge choreographic research collective which sprang out of it. Amy is a Sadler’s Wells Summer University artist. She has lectured in Choreography at London Contemporary Dance School and Northern School of Contemporary Dance and in Critical Studies at Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. She read English Literature at Cambridge University and trained at London Contemporary Dance School.
