PARIS an artist’s-eye view
modul-dance Modul-dance is a multi-annual cooperation project with the participation of 20 European dancehouses from 16 countries. One of the project’s key elements is the promotion of mobility, so that artists receiving its support follow itineraries across Europe to develop their creative work and present it to different audiences. Each of the guides in this collection shows a city from the viewpoint of a local artist, who proposes his or her own particular route to artists in transit, seeking to put them in connection with their host city. While these city routes share some basic features, each one is different and in their differences lies a wealth of gazes, aesthetics, approximations to the local and much more. In a word, they form a mirror of the diversity that modul-dance has always fostered. The Paris city guide has been possible thanks to the curatorial work of Centre national de la danse, a partner in the modul-dance project.

François Chaignaud Born in Rennes, François Chaignaud is a graduate of the Conservatoire Supérieur de Danse de Paris. He has danced with a number of choreographers since 2003: Boris Charmartz, Emmanuelle Huynh, Gilles Jobin, Tiago Guedes, Alain Buffard… Likewise, he has given performances and concerts at a great diversity of venues, in the crossroads of different inspirations – from erotic literature (Aussi bien que ton cœur ouvre moi les genoux, 2008), through operetta, to the art of the hula hoop (Duchesses, 2009, created with Marie-Caroline Hominal). François has begun some collaborations too, particularly with the legendary San Francisco drag queen Rumi Missabu, the performance artist Benjamin Dukhan, and the cabaret performer Jérôme Marin (Sous l’ombrelle, 2011). In 2012 he took part in the creation of Dominique Brun’s Sacre # 197. Also a historian, he has published L’affaire Berger-Levrault: le féminisme à l’épreuve (1898-1905) at PUR. François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea founded the company Vlovajob Pru in 2008. Subsequently, a sustained dialogue between the two choreographers gave life to a set of diverse works. Together they have created Pâquerette (2005-2008), Sylphides (2009), Castor et Pollux (2010), Danses libres (with choreographies by François Malkovsky and Suzanne Bodak, 2010), (M)IMOSA (co-written and interpreted with Trajal Harrell and Marlene Monteiro Freitas, 2011), Altered Natives’ Say Yes To Another Excess – TWERK (2012), and DUB LOVE (2013). In 2009, Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud were awarded the Critics Choreographic Revelation Prize. François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea were associate artists at the Ménagerie de Verre (Paris) between 2011 and 2013. vlovajobpru.com
