RESULTS
The MOE Group is experiencing a positive development with growth in both turnover and earnings. Growth comes from all business areas and the increased earnings from generally improved business processes and rewarding investments. Annual net turnover for the MOE Group for 2016 was 531.4 DKK million compared to 456.6 million DKK in 2015. Annual net turnover for the parent company MOE Denmark was 504.9 DKK million compared to 430.0 million DKK last year. Profit on ordinary activities after tax was 22.2 million DKK compared to 19.5 million DKK in 2015. The results meet our expectations. Development in the business areas The three business areas are Buildings, Energy & Industry and Infrastructure. The Buildings sector is growing and there is a focus on increasing the profitability of our projects and developing new consultancy services. Slightly more than half of the turnover in 2016 came from the Buildings sector. The business area, Energy & Industry, is developing. Our current focus is on the performance of several major projects and to make use of new opportunity to develop our services.
MOE runs a business PhD project that will contribute to the development of MOE’s specialist knowledge in the field of sustainability. The project is also an investment that will strengthen competitiveness and form the basis for growth for new business opportunities. Together with collaborators including Copenhagen University and the Innovation Fund, MOE has developed the visualisation tool, GANDALF, to register soil contamination. Knowledge resources Knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to valuecreating solutions is essential to the group. MOE | Competences and MOE | Academy have been developed to strategically support learning and knowledge sharing. In 2016, the company introduced a new intranet system, MOE | Insite, that will support knowledge sharing and collaboration across the organisation. Employees are the group’s knowledge resource and their commitment is crucial to developing the business. The group invests consciously in establishing the best framework for this to happen. In 2016, we initiated development of a comprehensive training project, the purpose of which is to strengthen managerial skills at MOE. Group strategy The group strategy is based on Vision 2020:
In the area of Infrastructure we focus on expanding individual market segments and strengthening local presence. In 2016, the environmental consulting firm, Seacon, became a part of the MOE Group. With expertise in the areas of ocean environment and environmental management, Seacon contributes significantly to the diversity of consultancy within the MOE Group. All business areas focus on streamlining project management through MOE | Project Model and make use of all opportunities to reduce project costs by utilizing the expertise of the group’s subsidiary in Asia where MOE became major stockholder in 2017. Geographical growth Growth at MOE has led to a need to move or expand several of our offices. The office at Fredericia moved to larger premises in 2016. In March 2017, the Aarhus office moved to newly built and larger offices at Aarhus Port. The headquarters in Copenhagen will be expanding during 2017/2018. In Norway, MOE opened another office in the Oslo area. This office at Follo will assist in increasing growth in Norway. Research and development activities At MOE, we strive to develop competencies, services and processes on an ongoing basis, with training, on the job, learning, strategic hiring and through allocation of funds for development.
Vision MOE will evolve to become a leading consulting firm in the Nordic region. The strong position in Denmark will be built upon and concurrently Norway, and eventually Sweden, will be developed to the same level. Growth and development must take place at the same time as we develop our competencies and retain the unique, transparent and innovative work culture that are the DNA of MOE. MOE will create long-term value and leave its mark on the society of the future. We will construct new infrastructure, safeguard the energy supplies of the future and tackle the environmental challenges the world is currently facing. MOE has a clear and manageable project organisation that ensures a short chain of command and rapid decision making. Individual projects are managed by the project manager, who leads a project team designed for the assignment. The project manager has overall responsibility in relation to the client and reports to the project owner.
MOE has locations in five cities in Denmark and one subsidiary in Norway. Buildings, Energy & Industry and Infrastructure are the business areas in MOE. BUILDING WITHIN THE SHARED VIRTUAL WORKSPACE Digital tools can streamline time consuming work processes and create a robust joint communications platform. We assist the client in exploiting the potential inherent in BIM, ICT and VDC.

Digital evolution in the construction industry contains a wealth of exciting possibilities. These new tools have shown themselves to be especially effective in tackling the geometric challenges involved in complex constructions. At MOE we have garnered valuable experience from such projects as the spectacular Den BlĂĽ Planet and Amager Bakke. The BIM models provide a clear overview of the interplay between various disciplines, boosting coordination to a great degree. The visual aspect of these tools also enable easier testing of the constructability of the many details.
A new communications platform
Development is headed toward the collation of more and more information in these digital tools. 4D integrates the temporal aspect of the construction process while 5D includes quantity extraction and price lists as a component of the modelling process.
At MOE we use digital tools everywhere and focus on continued development and strengthening of both utilisation and innovation. We gladly assist clients in comprehending, integrating and making full use of BIM and ICT. Our new department, ICT and BIM technical revision, has therefore developed three separate consulting services corresponding to the project phases. This division provides an enhanced overview of various needs/requirements that clients continually encounter on construction projects.
The ability to analyse data has therefore become an important core competence. It is about being positioned to program results and thereby automate work processes that are otherwise time and resource consuming. This is an important area of focus for MOE and we can clearly see the benefits.
Within the world of digital modelling a plethora of programs has emerged that can analyse data for various purposes. We have also reached a point where the programs can easily communicate with one another. This makes it possible to create a shared virtual workspace, that collates data that would otherwise be scattered among various documents, email correspondence etc. One of the immediate benefits is therefore the utilisation of communication platforms that allow for greater collaboration of all parties. What can I do as a client

ICT CONSULTING We assist the client in understanding ICT and help reveal what their actual requirements are for the specific project. We involve the client advisors and accommodate their needs for an inclusive optimisation of work processes.
PACKAGE 2
ICT MANAGEMENT We lead ICT throughout the project and prepare ICT schedules among other things. We ensure that the project is launched successfully by involving the parties as early as possible and setting shared game plan rules in relation to ICT specifications, communication modes and other guidelines.
PACKAGE 3
BIM TECHNICAL AUDIT This is a consistency control system in which all models are checked both in individual disciplines and from a cross disciplinary perspective. The client receives an Audit report that indicates not only collisions but also a professional technical evaluation of the revealed collisions/consistency deviations as well as the models’ quality and constructability. WHEN A WALK IN CLOSET MAY BE THE HEALTHY CHOICE The innovative project Sunde Boliger (Healthy Homes) investigates the various and dynamic pathways to a healthy indoor climate that can help prevent illness.
We are indoors up to 90% of the time. That is why a good indoor climate in our homes is essential for our health. Doctor and Professor at Aarhus University, Torben Sigsgaard, is one of the country’s leading researchers in the field. He believes that harmful particles of various types are the real villains. It is often possible to record particle levels in homes that are 6 to 7 times higher than on Denmark’s busiest road, H.C. Andersens Boulevard in central Copenhagen. In general, only 24% of particles in homes originate from the outside world while 76% are caused by indoor activities such as cooking, burning candles, furniture and the passage of people. Torben Sigsgarrd has worked as a consultant on Realdania By & Byg’s demo project Sunde Boliger, which MOE helped design together with Pluskontoret Architects and the Lendager Group. Three houses were constructed in this project. The first is a reference (benchmark) house called NOW-tech that resembles a regular house and that will function as a basis for comparison. The two others, YES-tech and NO-tech, will examine two very different approaches to the question of a healthy indoor climate.

The technology path In the YES-tech, technology is at the forefront. Ventilation is maximised to ensure efficient removal of particle pollution, together with use of zone control. At night, as the family sleeps, the quantity of air in the house is managed using draught control sliders so that ventilation in the bedrooms is increased. The amount of air is increased to two to three times more than in the average Danish bedroom. When the family gets up and leave the bedroom, the ventilation system notes the physical activity and the air is redirected back to the kitchen and other spaces the family are now active in. Together with Saint-Gobain, IC-Meter, Øland and Realdania By & Byg, MOE helped develop the ventilation system and each room contains indoor climate sensors that record temperature, humidity, CO2, noise level and not least, particles. These parameters are also a part of the management algorithm that determines the quantity of air that should be in each room. Taking their inspiration from industrial kitchens, MOE and Thermex also developed a new type of extractor hood for residences that generates an air curtain to capture the large quantities of particles generated from cooking.

Cross-disciplinary efforts centre stage
In the NO-tech house, on the other hand, the emphasis is on source control, that is, trying to completely eliminate the entry of problematic substances and particles in the home. Extraction ventilation is only employed in situations where purely natural ventilation alone cannot supply sufficient air exchange for the home. Instead, an innovative concept is applied where the air is drawn in over suspended ceilings and warmed by the heat that rises from living rooms so that cold air and draughts are avoided. Porous structures have also been made that can conduct moisture away through the outer wall of the house. Wood and paper wool are used to absorb the moisture and either diffuse it through the structure or release it again into the residence if the air once more becomes dry. According to Corporate Technical Director for Energy design and Indoor climate at MOE, Steffen Maagaard, the layout of the building is another important aspect:
The houses will be occupied for the first time in the autumn of 2017 and in the course of the next two to three years MOE will help measure and evaluate the multiple initiatives. After which the project should give rise to informed proposals for which initiatives give the greatest benefits for indoor climate. Both in relation to newbuild and solutions that can be integrated into existing buildings. According to Realdania By & Byg’s project leader, Jørgen Søndermark, the process surrounding the Sunde Boliger project is characterised by an exciting cross disciplinary synergy in which everyone contributes to the innovative solutions:
“The team also looked for relatively simple solutions. Among other measures, we constructed small separate bedrooms, so that sleeping activity is isolated from materials that release particles. For example, clothes and toys. Instead, the children have a shared playroom, where all plastic things can be stored, and all clothes are kept together in a form of walk in closet that also functions as a utility room.”
“In experimental projects of this type it is essential that we cooperate with a broadly composed circle of consultants who respect the varied expertise of the inputs and who positively engage in the early phases with a creative energy that is not diverted by 'used to' and 'silo thinking' but that contribute intelligently and in a solution oriented way so that the construction seen as a whole will be shifted towards improvement. In this MOE are fortunate enough to have good people who know how to play the game as team players.”

SHOPPING CENTRES
EVERYTHING UNDER ONE ROOF Rødovre Centrum was the first covered shopping centre in Denmark. Over the years it has undergone major developments, all of which MOE has played a part in since 2002. Rødovre Centrum is not only a well chosen name for a shopping centre, it IS the center of the municipality of Rødovre. It receives some 8.4 million visitors annually. The original centre measured 58,000 m2 which today has grown to 148,000 m2. In 2002, MOE became client consultant for one of the most prominent expansions and since then we have been regular consultants.

Our most recent assignment was an expansion of 20,500 m2 that also includes a two level underground parking space. The prism formed building takes its inspiration from ice crystals and also emphasises the client’s focus on natural light:
“Artificial light can only do so much; without natural light to give life to the centre on sunny, rainy, snowy and overcast days, the experience of a trip to the centre would be entirely different,” says Torben Andreasen, board chairman for the family-owned A/S Rødovre Centrum.

THE PATH TO SUCCESFUL PROJECTS MOE | Project Model is a tool that supports projects in all phases from the tendering process to completion. The project model assures better quality for the clients by revealing risks early in the process. The client thereby gains a better foundation and greater room to manoeuvre when making decisions on scheduling, quality and budget for the project. Business manager Jacob Ringsholt, project manager on the Mærsk office building at Nordhavn in Copenhagen, recounts:

CONSULTING FOR A GROWING INDUSTRY Overnight stays have become a sought after commodity in Danish cities. The Danish hotel market is booming. Especially around Aarhus and Copenhagen, but also in smaller cities. The causes of this increased demand are due to events, conferences, sporting occasions and cruise ships making port calls on their Scandinavian cruises. We are helping to build hotels all across the country, including Hotel Zleep on Hahnemanns Allé. This 6-storey hotel is a part of a major construction project in Ørestaden, which MOE consults on. It also contains residences, a parking block and a fast food restaurant.

Absalon Church has now been transformed into a colourful culture house, whose functions include a cinema and concert venue. MOE also worked on ensuring good sound in the music rooms of Aalborg Cathedral School. The school´s new three-floor extension has a multi-use hall on the ground floor, two large music classrooms and four rehearsal rooms in the middle and regular classrooms on the top floor. So there are a multiplicity of simultaneous sound waves that need to be managed.
“The great challenge lay in the fact the church is adjoined with an apartment block so the noise from concerts would be transmitted through the structures. We performed a series of measurements and then recommended some solutions. Including the classic boxin-box principle where a room is created which is sound detached from the supporting structures. The church venue aimed for 103 Db as an average music sound level. That was very ambitious, but we succeeded in creating the required sound isolation.”
“A trumpet can either play loudly or be entirely quiet .There´s no middle ground when musicians need to practise. It demands very special technical solutions when we must ensure good sound inwards and isolate the sound outwards. It is therefore important that we acoustic engineers get involved early in the process so that the solutions also harmonise with the architect´s and the contractor´s wishes,” concludes Jan Christensen.

At the site of Vordingborg castle ruins we helped reestablish the moat around Valdemar´s old castle and fortifications with the famed Goose Tower. We are now continuing on the same track as we help to restore "De 5 Hald'er" in Viborg. The 5 fort and manor house gardens lie on the northern shore of Hald Lake and afford an opportunity to travel back through 800 years of history accompanied by a noteworthy and colourful gallery of characters. At no other place in Denmark can one experience such an unbroken course of history from the 13th century to today, and in addition to that a walk through the outstanding natural surrounds.
MOE services includes civil works and landscape expertise and, among other things, we are involved in restoring a baroque garden, reconstruction of a drawbridge, laying out paths, parking sites, a viewing platform and an historical interpretive playground. The ruins of Harald Bluetooth Likewise, MOE are also helping to bring the two ruins at Borgring and Trelleborg to life in Køge and Slagelse, respectively. Harald Bluetooth left behind several monuments and these Viking fortresses will soon boast visitor centres. Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II inaugurated the visitor centre at Borgring in the summer of 2016. Now we are currently progressing on the new centre at Trelleborg, which will have the shape of a Viking shield.

It will also become a technically advanced hospital that will serve more than 310,000 people in the area. For a balancing act like this there are few standard solutions available. The art of engineering must be applied.
SUSTAINABILITY PETER HESSELHOLT CORPORATE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR | SUSTAINABILITY The level of ambition when it comes to indoor climate and energy is very high. The hospital must be constructed according to building class 2020 and there are stringent demands regarding the indoor climate. This must then be adapted to an equally ambitious architecture whose unique form of expression dictates that all rooms are unique. The rooms are oriented differently so that sunlight can enter from all angles and many rooms face gardens with varying degrees of shadow. This is a complex series of factors to harmonise as we try to secure the perfect balance between daylight, a healthy indoor climate and energy consumption. We have worked on a broad range of initiatives to optimise the facade. We have had to locate the right size windows and solutions for how canopies and slats can provide the necessary shade. Hospitals have in addition an enormous mechanical burden due to the large range of high tech machinery. We therefore identified all the internal heat burdens that influence the indoor climate and that require either cooling or ventilation

We achieve this by digging ditches in which the water is used recreationally and becomes a revitalising and healing theme. The water is led from the roof down into trenches and runs on into newly established ponds and brooks. From here the water flows to two nearby receivers. We normally guard against once in ten year climate events but that is not sufficient here. A hospital serves an infrastructural purpose that has to function even during crises. Fire safety at the hospital is of a unique cast, because we have to deal with a large flow of people and patients who lack mobility. In this instance, it is actually an advantage that the hospital is flat, so that in an emergency people can be evacuated horizontally rather than vertically as happens in high rise hospitals. At the same time, the most recent fire regulations are applied optimally because the wards´ openness and flexible design interact better with the personnel´s daily operations. We can in fact resolve many of the challenges we face in this building, but it demands that we think along entirely different lines. This is what makes the design process so exciting.

SUSTAINABILITY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION The Kintergarden Karolinelund Børnehave in Aalborg is the second construction project in Denmark to be certified DGNB platinum. At Aalborg´s old amusement park, Karolinelund, contractors Lund & Staun are constructing a new 867 m2 kindergarten with room for 90 children aged 3 to 5 years. The kindergarten was designed by Bjerg Architects in collaboration with landscape architects BY+LAND and consultants Rum Til Børn, who specialise in architecture that reinforces the pedagogical vision. Karolinelund Kindergarten will have an organic expression that will fuse with the green surroundings of the old park. An architectonic choice that will also help to create a good framework for the children´s play and learning. Because the pedagogic theme must be prominent both inside and outside the new building. Aalborg Municipality´s Kunstfond contributed with support for new artworks, that have been tailored to the age group.

On November 17, 2016, HRH Prince Joachim cut the red ribbon at DTU Biosustain - Novo Nordic Foundation Center for Biosustainability. An international research centre that works on developing cells that are genetically designed to sustainably produce valuable chemicals, medicinal products and food ingredients.
Now on to building 310
The new building has a flexible design so that it is relatively easy to carry out additional construction when the research demands renewal of the physical framework. The aesthetic qualities of the building were praised by Politiken´s architecture critic, who called DTU´s tallest building “Gucci gorgeous”.
Digital tools will come to play a large role in this construction project. The construction will be projected in 5D which incorporates scheduling and budgeting in the BIM model together with traditional data. The model is actively used by all parties involved so that it becomes an efficient joint collaboration platform that benefits users, consultants, contractors and of course, the client.

THE ART OF CREATING A STERILE ENVIRONMENT Tailored solutions for pharmaceutical production. The North Jutland Region Hospital Pharmacy has very stringent sterility requirements. They prepare and produce sterile medicines in cleanrooms classified as B, C and D according to the EU regulations for GMP(Good Manufacturing Practice). MOE is assisting in performing a new layout of existing cleanrooms and multiple associated installations. The project encompasses rebuilding of personnel sluices where personnel put on cleanroom suits when they enter or exit the production room. In addition data demonstrating compliance with GMP requirements must be recorded. Therefore, a monitoring system must be installed that can be validated under the GMP regulations.
We maintain an overview in all phases We also carry out preliminary studies of the air circulation in the cytostatic zone, where chemotherapy medicines are produced. Technically, cytostatic substances are toxic to cells, so even though it is an immensely effective treatment for cancer it must be handled with care for good reason. MOE takes care of all services in GMP qualification, for compliance with EU requirements as well as ISO requirements for the production of sterile medicines. On this project an added requirement was that the laboratory would continue to be operational during the reconstruction. This demands a strong sense for coordination and logistics so that the Hospital Pharmacy can continue to fulfill “Maintain state of valdidation�.

Søren Nielsen is Technical Director for Construction Management at MOE and here tells what he views as a construction manager´s key qualities.
Construction in the current era is very complex. This can give rise to challenges when the construction manager must keep the focus on time, budget, process and quality. Many construction projects are likewise affected by unforeseen events and professional disagreements are often unavoidable. The art of compromise is therefore essential:
"In our role as construction managers we are now being involved in the earliest phases of a project and not just in the execution phase. This demands, among other things, familiarity with tendering strategy, consulting on collaboration models and assurance of constructability.” In addition, Søren emphasise that understanding of technological developments is essential. 3D design has become the norm and with 4D and 5D respectively, scheduling and budgeting have also been integrated into the digital toolbox. A parallel development is a sharply increased interest in specialist services.

ALPE D'COPENHAGUE AND GREEN ENERGY
Amager Bakke has risen above the Copenhagen skyline and the incineration plant will become operational in 2017. For the construction of Copenhill, around 7,500 tonnes of steel and 44,000 m3 concrete was used. With a floor area of 43,000 m2 and a height of 85 m, Copenhagen´s new incineration plant and ski slope can truly be described as a noteworthy and spectacular addition to the architecture of the city. MOE has designed both the building and infrastructure work, and amongst this, the impressive steel skeleton, which could be seen for a long time before then encompassing façade and roof was established. As this is a power plant, the load bearing structures are of course of very high calibre, and in several places there are extra large spans to make room for machinery and functions.

DISTRICT HEATING
AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE GREEN CONVERSION Denmark is working towards a more sustainable future with a 100 % renewable energy supply. According to Grøn Energi, 64% of Danish homes receive district heating, 50% of which is derived from renewables. Including solar heating systems, biomass plants and heat pumps that MOE regularly assists in setting up across the country. Thus we are a part of the movement steering a direct course toward a sustainable exploitation of resources. The energy infrastructure optimised The proliferation of district heating networks is vital in order to achieve the targets that have been set. We are part of the roll-out of the district heating network in places that formerly held gas pipes. In many places we maintain the infrastructure by establishing more energy efficient supply lines. If district heating is going to be a significant player it is important that the network is made functional so that the solution remains attractive 30 years from now. In connection with this we carry out hydraulic surveys

to ensure that the network temperature can be lowered as much as possible and be made flexible hereby both in relation to current and future energy sources. Sustainable production units such as solar heat and heat pumps transmit energy most efficiently at lower district heating temperatures so there are great gains to be made in this area. By lowering temperatures, energy savings can be made at the same time due to the reduced heat loss.

RESEARCH FACILITIES FOR ONE OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE COMPANIES IN DENMARK We are currently involved in our third major construction project for Haldor Topsøe A/S. Haldor Topsøe was a man who understood how to combine the curiosity of a scientist with commercial nous and a global perspective. The businessman, who studied under Niels Bohr, was named Danish engineer of the century in 1999. Since the founding of the world renowned firm Haldor Topsøe A/S in 1940, the primary focus has been on innovative product development for the chemicals industry. Frequently aimed at finding solutions that benefit the wider community. Among other distinctions, Haldor was one of the first to understand and proliferate the use of chemical catalysis. Today, Haldor Topsøe’s catalytic converters are used in the exhaust systems of trucks, ships and other large diesel engines to reduce the emission of harmful substances. Another field of application is in oil refinement and it is precisely here that MOE assists in establishing the framework.

New laboratory facilities Refinery Business Unit is the third construction project in the space of 10 years that MOE has carried out for the Haldor Topsøe Group. Approximately 8,000 m2 laboratory facilities will be established in an eight-metre high storage hall. For this we have designed two inserted floors to make room for both labs and technics. This can rightly be described as a challenging heavy installation task. For example, separate ventilation systems with special filters for dust producing activities must be installed, likewise a water treatment plant, a centralised vacuum extraction system, a steam plant and pressurised air installations are required to supply the laboratories.
INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION
160 CUBIC METRES OF CONCRETE AN HOUR MOE is client consultant on a super factory project in Odense. The first step in Unicorn's new national growth strategy. In 2016, Unicon produced no less than 1.2 million cubic metres of concrete. The manufacturer´s total production facilities in Denmark consist of 37 factories spread across several locations countrywide. Two of the factories are located in Odense and it is planned that they will now be combined to become a super factory at Tietgenbyen. Here, Unicon will be able to produce 100,000 cubic metres of concrete a year and 160 cubic metres an hour. The new site will be equipped with 20,000 m2 of surfacing that will form the ground on which up to 220 trucks a day will transit the
area. The factory itself will consist of a mixer building with two mixers and associated equipment such as conveyor belts etc. In addition, a 400 m2 administrative building must be built. As client consultant MOE has been involved right from the start of this notable construction. We are now project manager for the total project which involves, among other things, coordination between the contractors and construction of the machinery. We draw on many years´ experience, having handled many and various assignments for Unicon since 1995.

PARKING IN ITS WIDEST SENSE The New University Hospital in Aarhus will soon have a parking complex with a heliport on the roof. The University Hospital in Aarhus will not only receive a parking complex with space for 700 cars. A heliport will be established on the roof of the building to ensure that patients who arrive by helicopter can be transported directly to acute reception via an elevator and receive treatment faster. The platform is 27.5 metres in diameter and primarily designed for the yellow EC145T2 medical helicopters, approximately 350 of which are expected to land here each year. Since the defence forces must also be able to land with their somewhat larger EH101 rescue helicopters approximately 150 times a year, the heliport can also accommodate this type.

Fire suppression in fifteen second The platform is an aluminium construction and equipped with a series of essential features such as a refuelling system for medical helicopters. Safety is always an extremely important consideration in air transport and the platform also includes a Deck Integrated Fire Fighting System that can extinguish a helicopter fire in the space of fifteen seconds. The system consists of 21 foam cannons integrated into the deck that pop up automatically in the event of fire.
HISTORIC EXPANSION OF COPENHAGEN AIRPORT In the future, Copenhagen Airport will serve more than 40 million passengers annually. Expanding CPH is the name that has been given to the new expansion of Europe´s fastest growing airport. In just five years the number of passengers has risen by 24 per cent and all prognoses indicate that this passenger growth will continue. Capacity must be increased from the current 26 million to 40 million passengers per year and the airport will also gain space for 17 new long distance routes. This requires at the very least an enormous expansion of the gates from 78 to 128. at the moment MOE is designing 5 widebody aircraft gates to be established at the new Pier E.

Enhanced flow The large number of passengers will create a need for a greatly enlarged flow area, which forms the basis of several initiatives. Among other projects, MOE is involved in expanding Terminal 2 by 4,000 m2 between Pier A and Pier B. The expansion will form part of the commercial area, Copenhagen Airport Shopping Centre.

On an empty field between Frederikssund and Ølstykke the completely new town of Vinge is emerging. Eventually, the approximately 370 houses will be home to 20,000 residents. In 2016, the town was displayed at Denmark´s Museum of Design thanks to its aesthetic qualities. But the technical aspects are at least as interesting. MOE contributed to developing a master plan for the town and later worked on a wide range of elements. Infrastructure from the ground up When you start building on a bare field, it is necessary to have robust competencies in the area of site preparation, development and geotechnics to be able to take the first steps. MOE brings these to the table. We also handled the overarching planning of the road network at the master plan level and subsequently formulated project proposals for several approach roads. Here, traffic planning was of course a key consideration. A green and vibrant centre At the centre of Vinge one finds the town´s centre of gravity. The new eponymous S train station for which MOE created a project proposal. The bridge structure´s bowl form above the railway is especially complex and challenging both from an architectural and engineering perspective. At the same time, we were able to provide rail expertise.
Extending from the station to the north and south we find the town´s “Green Heart” taking its inspiration from Central Park, and helps to pull nature right into the centre of town. As part of the master plan, we sketched the project for drainage and climate adaptation, and in this the park plays a large role, as there will be two rainwater ponds that will be used recreationally. In addition a long series of LAR solutions have been implemented around the town such as additional rainwater reservoirs, drainage channels alongside roadways and smaller LAR ponds. A sharp focus on climate adaptation is important as sustainability is a central part of this urban development project.

Environment in the driving seat In 2016, the environmental consulting firm, Seacon, became a part of the MOE group. The two companies were well acquainted through collaboration on environmental reports and EIA (environmental impact assessments) for Vinge. Seacon possesses great expertise in the area of nature conservation and as the town is located in a natural area, several studies of flora and fauna in the vicinity have been conducted. Together with MOE´s drainage engineers work has also been done on finding solutions so that the adjacent Tvins marsh north of the station is not overburdened. As this is the habitat of the Moor Frog, classed as a strictly protected species on the EU Habitats Directive Annex IV.

CONSULTANTS IN THE FIELD We are helping to renovate Mjølnerparken and Tina Pehrson and Louise Kristine Berg from MOE have been screening for environmentally harmful substances. Copenhagen Municipality has declared that a screening for environmentally harmful substances in building materials must be carried out before renovation work begins in Mjølnerparken in Nørrebro. This will ensure a healthy and safe working environment for employees who need to handle construction waste and sort it correctly with regard to the environment. The two consultants focused in particular on heavy metals in paint on walls, doors, windows, frames and balconies:
“It is very interesting because Mjølnerparken was built at the start of the 80s, just when the use of these paint products with heavy metals was being phased out,” says Tina Pehrson. Tina and Louise explain that the great challenge lies in the fact that residents still occupy the apartments. Normally, MOE arrives long after the residents have moved out and demolition is set to begin.

” Normally, we take samples without having to think about how we leave the material afterwards. In the Mjølnerparken assignment it was important that any damage was as unnoticeable as possible. We tried to locate places where the paint was already flaking or where curtains or doors concealed the spot so that our sampling would not be visible,” says Tina, while Louise adds: “It was a very positive experience to be invited into people´s homes - we have only encountered friendliness, we were even offered coffee, soda and cookies.” After sampling, the samples were analysed at an approved laboratory. Based on the results a report was drawn up that will form the basis for later handling of construction material during the renovation project.

URBAN TRANSFORMATION
STREET CULTURE IN THE FACTORY HALL In 2018, the old industrial building at Eternitten will be taken over by dancers, parkour practitioners, basketball players and climbing enthusiasts. GAME Streetmekka is a project in which three towns have been selected to transform defunct industrial buildings into gathering points for street sports and culture. One of these is in Aalborg and here a team consisting of MOE, JaJa Architects and Pallisgaard will orchestrate the conversion of an old concrete factory. The team based their plans on the existing structure and facades to retain the raw industrial look.

The concrete walls will constitute a canvas for street art while an old crane will become a viewing/lounge area with a panorama of the city. FUTURE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN COPENHAGEN A new metro circle line will open in 2019 and MOE | Tetraplan has analysed how the bus network can be adapted to the new extension. The 15.5 kilometre metro ring in Copenhagen will connect the Central Station, Inner City, Østerbro, Nørrebro, Vesterbro and Frederiksberg. Fewer commuters will use the bus and therefore it is necessary to examine how the bus network can be adapted to the future passenger flow.

MOE | Tetraplan worked on developing an advanced traffic plan for the capital area, OTM, which the department has also employed to carry out calculations of the consequences for traffic of opening the City Ring. The calculations look at the City Ring´s influence on the bus network and the passenger related effects of various proposals for a new bus network.
In another project MOE | Tetraplan is evaluating the consequences for traffic of a series of alternative layout proposals for light rail and metro expansion in the corridor between Nørrebro st. and Ring 3.

CYCLING
INFRASTRUCTURE FOR TWO-WHEELED COMMUTERS From a strategic level down to the individual cycle lane, MOE helps to create better conditions for the danish cyclists. According to Copenhagen Municipality, 52 % of all Copenhageners cycle to work or school each day. So the bike network needs to be constantly optimised and extended. On Gothersgade in the center of the city we have designed wider cycle paths to afford greater room for cyclists. We are now progressing with the 3rd stage of the Svanemølle route, a part of the Green Cycle Routes winding through recreational areas. We are also creating new connections for cycling commuters in Aalborg. A new 7.5 km long commuter route will enhance accessibility between Aalborg centre and the port area and commercial and industrial district in Aalborg East.
Cycling in the future In a long term perspective, we are assisting the Danish Road Directorate in looking at future development of cycling. MOE | Tetraplan is leading a team that upgrades the OTM traffic model to a new version that will improve simulation of cyclists transit in the capital area. MOE | Tetraplan has proposed solutions to the Copenhagen Municipality for another typical problem cyclists frequently encounter: Parking. In the coming years, Copenhagen Central Station will experience huge growth in number of passengers and we have helped prepare a catalogue of scenarios with various suggestions for a much needed expansion of bike parking options.

There is an extreme lack of student housing in Copenhagen. Danica Pension aims to meet this challenge with its new student residence complex, Uptown, in Nørrebro. The complex will consist of a corner building and five tower blocks with 6 to 7 floors plus a 100-metre tall 29 storey tower. Project Director for Client Consulting at MOE, Mads Nysten, tells about a special project that makes great demands on coordination, logistics and planning.
“We have to construct a very large complex on a relatively small site in one of Denmark´s most densely populated areas. This gives rise to some interesting challenges. To illustrate my point, we needed, for example 100 concrete trucks coming into Nørrebro on

a single day when we were casting the base for the tower. But it went surprisingly smoothly.” Help from specialists Having to build in a densely populated area has meant a great deal of work in relation to political handling and preparation of a distrcit plan, and in this MOE played a major role. According to Mads Nysten, there are also several unique technical aspects and here he was able to draw on expertise from several of MOE´s specialists.

At the same time, our traffic planners could, for example, help in relation to the logistics of goods delivery for a future groceries store, whilst acoustic engineers have assisted with the preliminary noise reports.” Strong communities One of the goals of the Uptown project is to promote diversity and community in the neighbourhood, says Mads Nysten:
“Community is a key concept on this project. There are communal roof terraces, a shared garden and a large hall. Now we will also help assess how the common areas should be furnished so that we can facilitate social life. A key point is also that the idea of community should be continued beyond the construction itself. The buildings will also contain cafés and commercial premises on the ground floor. Overall we reflect a great deal on how we can open the building up and make Uptown an integrated part of the neighbourhood,” concludes Mads Nysten.
Risskov Brynet will be a sustainable residential development with 38,000 m2 of residences and 6,000 m2 commercial property.

FROM NORTHERN MOUNTAINS TO RUSTLING PALM TREES Theis Coling and Steffen Andersen work for MOE in Norway and the Philippines, respectively.
Northern commuting MOE in Norway had an opening for a water, heat and sanitation engineer with sharp digital skills and Theis Coling fit the bill perfectly. Theis had worked since 2014 on laboratories for MOE in Copenhagen, where he had designed a number of installations in Revit. His skills were a good match for the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences project, the country´s centre for education and research in elite level sports. Whilst Theis was enthusiastic to test his skills elsewhere in the group and experience some Norwegian nature into the bargain. Even though he lives quite close to the office in Asker, there is just one little mountainside to be traversed going to and from work.

Theis points out that it has been exciting to work from a smaller office whilst at the same time being part of a major group.
The Norwegian School of Sports Sciences is the Norwegian directorate of public construction´s first major BIM project and that´s why my experiences with Revit were so valuable. It´s very interesting to be part of the exchange of competencies and employees within the group. MOE Norway, for instance, possess some very special skills in the area of swimming complexes that can be used in Danish projects.”
Project manager courses in the jungle For many years, Steffen worked with drainage technology, climate adaptation and installation assignments for MOE. But in 2016, he accepted an offer to be posted to the Philippines as construction manager on a large construction project in the jungle. The heat, humidity and powerful downpours create unique challenges on the construction site. In a downpour the river alongside the site can rise up to six metres in a short time. This places great demands on the drainage system connected to the river.
Steffen journeyed out to make progress as a project manager and if you ask him, he compares the process to taking a project manager course at Roskilde University:
“I´m actually reading the same books they use, to see if it might be something that would interest me later on. Everything I´m going through right now? It´s all written in the book. I´m just getting the practical experience rather than the theoretical.”

SUNNY BARCELONA AND SNOWY Sร LDEN Every year, all MOE employees are invited on a study trip and a skiing trip. For the last ten years MOE has organised annual study trips to a major foreign city. In 2016 it was Barcelona and in 2017 the destination is Warsaw. During the day we participate in work related trips to seek professional inspiration. In the evenings we sample restaurants and everyone has the opportunity to explore the city. At the start of the year all our snow enthusiast join up for a trip to the mountains. This year the destination is Sรถlden in Austria. Together with our annual Christmas party, these trips are a great opportunity to get to know employees from other disciplines and offices.

AARHUS Ø Aarhus has been chosen as European capital of culture for 2017. New architecture is one of the reasons for increased attention to the city. AARhus is a spectacular new residential development. The Vshaped building was designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group whith Gehl architects responsible for the landscaping and MOE as the consulting engineer. A business PhD project at MOE led to the development of a new tool that helps ensure a perfect balance between indoor climate and daylight in the apartments, which have a naturally large amount of light entering.
