Summer school can be a fun thing. If the subject is baseball. The Diamond Baseball Academy in Blue Ash provides such summer education - not to mention the rest of the year -offering year-round baseball lessons among its many programs. "If you start off with good fundamentals at a young age, then you can increase your skills a lot faster," Academy president Mike Bricker said. Baseball, like many youth sports, has become a year-round proposition. Gone are the days when most star high school athletes ··switched sports with the seasons. Most o( the front-line baseball prospects now play the school season in the spring, a 70to 80-game summer season with a select team, perhaps a few weeks in a fall.league, and have indoor workouts in the winter. One-on-one coaching is scarce in that routine. So a place like Diamond fills the void. "Coaches are always telling you what to do," Goshen resident Gary McGlone said. "But it's better to get that individual treatment.'1 Gary's son Ryan McGlone'is a first baseman for Moeller High School. He'll be a senior in the fall. With the important college decision approaching, father and son stopped by the academy last week for some pointers. "Ryan's always been a good hitter," Gary said. "Right now

he's in a funk. We need to fine tune his swing to get him to the next level." Bricker worked· with McGlone for an hour, analyzing his swing. Bricker adjusted his grip, his elbow level, his front foot stride. McGlone can only hope his results approach those of Steve Johnson, Montgomery resident and rising Summit Country Day senior. Johnson played in Bricker's fall league last year and took several hitting lessons. He responded by helping Summit to the Division IV ·district finals, while leading the Miami Valley Conference w~h a .582 batting average this spring. "I was swinging the bat pretty poorly at the time, and it actually helped a lot," Johnson said. "With him (Bricker), it's proper mechanics. He shows you the right way to hold a bat, teaching

the trigger." Bricker played and coached at the University of South Carolina and spent five years with the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox as a scout "I think he eats, sleeps and breathes baseball," said Henry Saylor, Bricker's grandfather-inlaw. The Diamond staff also includes former Cincinnati Red pitcher Ted · Power, Ken Osterkamp, Steve Kelly and Brian Conley. Bricker opened the Academy in January. In addition to his year · camps, classes and lessons, the facility features batting cages, tunnels and an indoor infield complete with Cinergy Field Astroturf for team practices and individual workouts. "We're trying to help teach the kids the right technique and fundamentals," Bricker said. "Develop them as ball players."

Mike Cameron doesn't remember going through a slump like it in his 32 years of coaching baseball at Moeller. The Crusaders were 5:6 enter· ing Wednesday's play against undefeated St. Xavier, including losing their first five Greater Ca.tho· lie League· games by a total of seven ~uns. Scott Byrnes Brad Alvis and Moeller's offense brought that st~ealt to an end at Crosley Fi~ld in Blue Ash. A pair of wins- 8-5 in the completlon-of a game that began March 28 and 16-11 - have Cameron and Moeller feeling better. Moeller scored three runs in the top of the lOth inning to win the first game. Byrnes led off the inning with a single and later scored what proved to be the winning run on an Andrew Bradley two-run single. He earned a 10-inning compl~te game by ending the contest with a swinging strike-

He came back and started the regularly scheduled game, pitching a perfect first frame. The second inning was anything but per· feet. Byrnes didn't retire any of the seven batters he faced in the inning as the Bombers scored eight times to take what looked to be a command· ing lead. Jackson got a measure of revenge by stroking a two-run single to knock Byrnes out of the game. Se· nior John Frank came in and finished up the inning before turning the pitching duties over to Alvis: The junior right-hander shut out St. Xavier the next four innings. By the time the Bombers finally plated three runs in the seventh inning, it was too little, too late. Moeller got" single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings, four more in the third and a gamebreaking nine in the fifth. Senior right fielder Paul Frietch's three-run triple off the base of the wall in rightcenter field gave Moeller the lead for good, 11-8. Eight of the 10 Crusaders who batted in the second game had two or more hits. That's the kind of offensive performance expected of a team that has five Division I signees on its roster. Playing near .500 baseball is as frustrating to the team members as it is perplexing. "We've struggled all year and we just needed something to get us going," said Byrnes. "We knew they were better than 0-5 in the league," said St. Xavier coach Bill Slinger.

The 2001 Cincinnati Hills Academy and Sycamore High School baseball teams have what every team longs for - pitching depth -while Moeller is looking for a special season start to finish. · CHCA head coach Robert Gardner believes the arsenal of pitchers Pat Hillary, David Badon, Jordan Gaietto and Robert Tyma is a huge strength this season. The array of pitchers coupled with the fact this year's team also has the most experience in the six-year history of the baseball program leav~s the door open for new possibilities. "What makes a good program is the combination of working hard and having good attitudes," Gardner said. "This team keeps growing and improving together. Having this much experience is a change. It is going to be a fun experience.

"Our pitchers have better control and location this season." Jon Snider, Rory Hodus and Bill Puhljoin Hillary, Badon and Gaietto as returnees from last year's 16-10 team. Offensively, CHCA's attack is led by leadoff hitter Ryan Scott and left fielder Drew Hood. CHCA finished with a 10-6 record in the Miami Valley Conference last year and Gardner expects Cincinnati Country Day to be the team's toughest league competition this year. He also believes his team will be able to play with the Indians. The Eagles open the season March 27 at Reading before traveling to Fort Walden, Fla., to participate in the Fort Walden Bash Tournament. The team will play six games against top programs from Kentucky and Pennsylvania before returning home to take on St. Bernard. Moeller High School enters the 2001 season equipped with as just much talent as the school has ever had. Maybe even more according to 34-year head

coach Mike Cameron. "Experience is our strength,' Cameron said. "We are very, very capable of having an outstanding season. We have a lot of baseball talent. "We are good from top to bottom. Our seniors have high expectations and are committed to taking it a step further." . Moeller returns seven out of eight position players from last year's 23-7 Division I state Final Four team. Threeyear starter Scott Burns returns as Moeller's top pitcher with either John Frank, Jared Noland or Jeff Bryadt expected to fill the second and third rotation spots. First baseman Joe Neville, second baseman Jim Wood, shortstop Tyler Tabler, catcher Justin McNeely, third baseman Adam.Visnic and right fielder Paul Frietch provide Moeller with offensive and defensive depth. The six returnees combined for a.382 batting average in 2000. Frietch set the pace with a .482 batting average la~t season and set a school record for the

·arws to plate most RBis in a single season with 39. Tabler was the team's second leading hitter with a .400 batting average and 27 RBI. In addition to pitching, Bums also contributes at the plate as Moeller's designated hitter with a .341 batting average. Moeller aims to bring home the school's fourth state championship this season. The ftrst step toward the goal-comes March 26 at 4:30 p.m. at Milford. Moeller has won baseball state championships in 19~2, 1989 and 1993. After finishing the Greater Miami Conference in a tie for third place last season, Sycamore High School coach Chris Shrimpton decided to mix things up this year._ He believes the position changes and the performances of pitching trio Justin Hap in, Matt Dolan and Matt Hunert will keep his team competitive in 2001. Dolan makes the transition from shortstop to third base when he is not on the mound. Matt Guker moves from second to shortstop.

Catcher Keith Reinheart also is adjusting to a new position after playing third base last season. Sophomore Drew RobertS get~ the starting nod at first after an impressive 2000 junio~; varsity season. Mike Hull rounds out Sycamore's infield at second base. Hunert will start in center field when he is not pitching, but the other tWo outfield positions are still undecided. "We will be very good on defense," Shrimpton said. "Pitching ·wise we have three guys that throw the ball pretty well. They arc a competitive bunch. We have great chemistry and work hard. "We are very enthusiastic and we should be able to hold our own." Shrimpton said the GMC is the best conference in Ohio and he expects Hamilton and Fairfield to continue to be the conference powers. The Aviators will be led at the plate by Dolan,-Reinheart and Gukner. Gukner has signed to play baseball at Yale next year. Sycamore opens the season at 4:30 p.m. March 26 at Milford.

Senior leadoff hitter Mark Terwilliger sparked two rallies to lead Moeller to a 6-5 win against Anderson in high school baseball Thursday. After hitting a double and scoring the Crusader's first run in the third inning, the center fielder started the fourth inning with a single, stole second base and came home on a Paul Frietch single. Frietch then scored what proved to be the winning run on senior third baseman Adam Visnic's second double of the afternoon. Junior reliever Rob Seimers came in with two outs in the sixth inning to stop a rally. He retired the side in the seventh to earn his first save.' Senior right-hander John Frank pitched 5Y.! innings to earn the win.

The anival of 2001 baseball season means new challenges for Madeira, Moeller and Deer Park high schools. After winning a state championship in 1999 and reaching the final 16 in· 2000, Madeira enters this season with several question marks. Eighth-year head coach Jack Kuzniczci's main concern is the lack of pitching experience. . . "Pitching was the key to us wmmng sectionals ·and district last year," he said. "Since 1997 we have won 20-plus games (eacq.year). This year is going to be tough. We have to work hard, get a decent start and continue to work on improving." · Madeira returns only four wins from last season's 22-win pitching staff. Madeira will rely on junior Mike Waoner and senior Chris Crawford to confain the potent bats of Cincinnati Hills League opponents this season.
