*There were some sources that mentioned that Woodward H.S. may have had an undefeated regular season in the late ‘80s to early ‘90s. Unable to confirm.
THE ‘ALL-TIME’ STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE:
Middletown HS – 1956 – 1958 won 76 straight games. This streak was ended in the State Semi-finals of 1958, when they lost to Columbus North 63-62. Given the way the streak ended, it ‘had to have included the playoffs as well.’

LONGEST WINNING STREAKS OF ALL TIME

“True Step has really thought outside the box when engineering aluminum dock stairs for industrial buildings. In comparison to the traditional steel dock stairs, the aluminum stairs do not have the added time of the galvanization process. They are also easier for the average worker to install, which broadens the pool of qualified installers in today’s tight labor market, as well as improves the overall quality. True Step understands the needs of industrial developers and builders, which is why I have trusted them to install many aluminum dock stairs for our last 2.7 million square feet of industrial building.”

Dave Holum | Varsity Head Coach
Coach Holum is in his second season with the Crusaders as varsity head hockey coach. The team finished 4th last year in the Capital Hockey Conference with a record of 8-7-1 and an overall record of 16-14-3.
Dave brings a well-rounded hockey background, not only as a player, but as a former coach in the top junior hockey league in the U.S. Dave spent his youth and high school years playing hockey in Minnesota. From there, he went on to play Division I hockey at St. Cloud State University. After completing his four years at St. Cloud, Dave went on to play one year of professional minor league hockey with the Roanoke Express, in Roanoke, VA.
His coaching career got started in 1998 with the Green Bay Gamblers in the United States Hockey League. In the two years he spent in Green Bay, he was fortunate enough to capture the Clark Cup Trophy in 1999/2000 awarded to the Tier 1 Junior Hockey Playoff champion. Dave spent most of the following years coaching youth hockey in Minnesota.
Dave and his family moved to Cincinnati in 2019. He became a fan of Moeller hockey when his son Cooper played two seasons on the varsity hockey team.
Coach Holum and his wife, Jill, have three children, Cooper, Lexie and Kenzie.
Derek Kariofiles ‘18 | Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Kariofiles is entering his second year as a coach. He played three years on the varsity hockey team at Moeller, graduating in 2018. After his time at Moeller, he attended Bowling Green State University, where he played two seasons of ACHA Division 2 Club Hockey. Derek is really excited to be a part of the organization using his acquired skills from his time at BGSU and Moeller.
Derek’s two brothers, Drew ‘10 and Dominic ‘21, also attended Moeller, and his mom, Cindy Kariofiles, works at the school. He was a part of Trinity House and won the Lacrosse State Championship in 2017.
Derek now works as a smart home automation programmer while playing hockey in a men’s league a couple of nights a week.
VARSITY HOCKEY COACHES
Sean Staples | Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Staples is entering his second season with the Crusaders as assistant varsity hockey coach. From the age of seven, Sean has been playing AA and AAA hockey in Metro Detroit. He then went on to play varsity hockey for Lakeland High School during his sophomore through senior years. In his senior year, Sean earned All-area, All-Conference, All-State and Academic All-State honors. He was also a recipient of the Hobey Baker High School Character Award for Michigan, given to high school hockey players who exemplify the Hobey Baker ideal that “Character Builds Excellence.”
After graduating from high school in 2009, Sean went on to Michigan State University, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing (2013).
Sean relocated from Washington, DC, to Cincinnati for work in 2021. He currently lives in Hyde Park with his wife, Helena, and chocolate Labrador Retriever, Radley.
and JV Goalie Coach
Mike Bussom is entering his ninth season as goalie coach for Moeller hockey. He has enjoyed working with some of the best goalies in the program’s history.
Mike was born and raised in upstate New York. There, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Management at Binghamton University in 1987, and he played goalie for the hockey team his senior year.
After graduating, Bussom worked in the automotive financial industry in Baltimore, Los Angeles, Detroit and Cincinnati over an eight-year period. SWIMMING & DIVING COACHES
Jon Bennett | Head Swim Coach
Jon Bennett grew up swimming for Evendale, Princeton Aquatic Club, and St. Xavier. He was a GCL All-Star his senior year. He swam for the club team and played water polo at Miami University. Swimming also was the reason he met his wife, Nicole, who was an All-American swimmer in high school and college. For competitive swimming, he still does The Great Ohio River Swim each year.
He’s coached for the Evendale Eagles, Sharonville Sharks, and Princeton High School, as well as Miami University’s club swim team. This is his 4th year teaching at Moeller, his 14th year overall.
Assistant Swim Coach
This is Rob Vitolo’s sixth year assisting with the swim team. He oversees practices with the team members who do not swim on a club team year-round. He also assists Head Coach Jon Bennett during swim meets by keeping time and other event-related duties.
In addition to his involvement with the swim team, Rob holds two bachelor’s degrees and one master’s degree from Miami University. He has also taught Spanish at Moeller for eight years. Rob and his wife, Alison, have a one-year-old daughter named Eloise.
David has over 40 years of diving coaching experience at high school and college levels. He is an alum of the University of Toledo, where he was a diver. David has coached at numerous high schools in his 28 years in Cincinnati, including Ursuline, Walnut Hills, Wyoming, Sycamore and McNicholas. David is also a coach for the elite dive club OHK (Southwestern Ohio and Northern Kentucky Diving).

WRESTLING COACHES
Germane Lindsey ‘07 | Head Coach
Coach Lindsey is going into his tenth year as head coach of Moeller wrestling. An alumnus of Moeller, class of 2007, his passion for the sport and for the Crusaders to succeed has never wavered. Lindsey has been involved in wrestling for over 26 years, 13 of them in a coaching role.
Germane attended Ohio University where he was a D-1 College All American and a D-1 State Champion. He spent two additional years in Athens as a graduate assistant and last season was nominated for Coach of the Tri-State. He is a nine-year National Team Ohio freestyle and Greco coach and has coached five state finalists and one state champion, Jake Thompson ’18, during his time here at Moeller.
Coach Lindsey is a security monitor at Mt. Healthy and resides in Milford.
Jack Hodges | Assistant Coach
Coach Hodges started wrestling as a freshman in high school because he wanted to try something new and fell in love with the sport. Hodges credits wrestling with changing him into a man of service and improving his work ethic. These lifelong gifts continue to drive him to be his best. This is his second year coaching including a season at Hughes High School where he coached the first state qualifier in wrestling since 1957 with a third year sophomore. Wins are important, but for Coach Hodges, the holistic growth of athletes and young men drive him to coach and mentor.
Ron Howard is beginning his tenth year with Moller wrestling. Prior to Moeller, Howard coached at Bishop Fenwick High School from 2012 to 2013 and Mount Saint Joseph University from 2013 to 2016.
Howard is a 2006 graduate of Cleveland State University where he was a 3x Division 1 NCAA qualifier and a 2006 Eastern Wrestling League champion.
He graduated from Finneytown High School, where he was a 2x state qualifier and finished 3rd in the state tournament in his senior year.
Howard is married with two children.
WRESTLING COACHES
Garrett Lotz ‘10 | Assistant Coach
Garrett Lotz enters his tenth season as a coach for the Moeller Crusaders.
A proud Moeller wrestling alumnus, he graduated in 2010. Before starting to coach, he competed at the College of Mount St. Joseph until injuries put an end to his NCAA career. In addition, he has served on the wrestling program board for the past two years. He currently resides in Madeira.
Shane Love | Assistant Coach
Shane Love enters his third year on the Moeller wrestling coaching staff and his seventh year of coaching wrestling. Prior to Moeller, Shane coached at Kings Middle School and Troy Jr. High and High School, his alma mater.
Prior to coaching, Shane had nine years of wrestling experience. He was a four-year letterman in wrestling at Troy High School and graduated in 2016. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in sports science from Wright State University and currently works for the United States Air Force.
Coach Love and his wife, Carlie, reside in Loveland with their 8-month-old son, Noah, and Golden Retriever, Millie.
Bobby Lyons ‘00 | Assistant Coach
Coach Lyons is entering his 14th year of coaching. He coached 6 years with Moeller’s middle school program and 7 years as Wyoming High School’s head coach. At Wyoming, Lyons earned CHL coach of the year twice and was named Southwest Ohio division 2 coach of the year twice.
WRESTLING COACHES
Sean Ryan |
Varsity Assistant Coach and Team Chaplin
Sean Ryan is in his 29th year overall as a Division 1 high school wrestling coach. He started wrestling in 1978 and has coached at Moeller for 17 years.
Coach Ryan is looking forward to once again assisting Coach Lindsey, who had wrestled for the Crusaders while Ryan was on the coaching staff, with his focus on the upper weight classes, strength training, and with our Athlete Ministry Program. Over the course of his career, Ryan has created, developed, and managed youth, JH, and HS programs, clinics/camps, and tournaments.
Coach Ryan and his wife, Stephanie, have been married for 34 years. They have three children, Molly (Mike Compton), Casey, and Erin. They welcomed their first grandchild in 2024. They are parishioners of St. Margaret of York Catholic Parish.
Eljun Watson | Assistant Coach
Originally from Illinois, Coach Eljun Watson wrestled through high school before joining the military. He moved to Cincinnati after finishing his service and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati. Eljun has two sons, Nacho and Pepe, who wrestle and will soon become Men of Moeller. Eljun has been involved with wrestling in Cincinnati since 2013 and is entering his fifth year as an assistant at Moeller. Prior to joining Moeller, he was an assistant wrestling coach for three years for Walnut Hills.
Eljun is married to his high school sweetheart, Charlene, who is also an avid fan of wrestling.
Ben Savage | Assistant Coach
Ben Savage has been involved in wrestling programs for over 35 years. He has worked with youth wrestlers and volunteered as a coach. He coached at Taylor for two years and participated as a coach for the Ohio National Team in: Girls Freestyle, Boys Freestyle & Greco USA Wrestling.
