Intro to Intros: A Breakdown and Analysis of Video Game Openings
In this exciting MoeTerm course, students will dive into the opening moments of various video games to discover what makes a great hook. Just like an English class analyzes the narrative themes of a novel, students will explore the storylines and themes that make video games captivating from the very start. Students will also examine how the opening of a video game differs from the beginning of a book or movie. Each student will get the opportunity to play through the opening of a video game while the rest of the class watches, learns, and analyzes the techniques behind it. Games like Mario, Final Fantasy, God of War, and more will be part of the journey, helping students to better understand what draws players into a game right from the start.
Introduction to Narrative Game Design
Can a handful of dice and a couple of miniatures tell a story? Immerse yourself in the world of role-playing games and modern board games. Unlike many old-fashioned games that rely on a repetitive mechanic, role-playing games (RPGs), counterinsurgency (COIN) games, and collaborative board games are some of the popular and modern genres of games that use narrative to lead the players on an adventure. Players must adapt to the twists and turns of the storyline as they compete against each other or even against the game itself. In this MoeTerm course, students will be challenged to craft a story through the medium of a tabletop (physical) game. They will learn to explore the basic game design elements and mechanics that make for a successful game and then apply them to their own creations.

Rock and Roll Revolution: From Chuck Berry to the White Stripes and Beyond
For those about to rock, we salute you. Students will explore the roots of rock music, starting in the 1950s and journeying through to today’s greatest hits. Dive into the stories of iconic artists, the evolution of the equipment they used (with live demonstrations), and the genre’s cultural impact. Students will also get hands-on experience building their own electric guitar from scratch, which they will be able to take home at the end of the course. Plus, learn to play key guitar riffs from classics like “Johnny B. Goode,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and “Seven Nation Army.” The course concludes with a field trip that will allow students to explore the rock scene first-hand.
Roots and Innovation: Immigrant Contributions to Cincinnati’s STEM and Arts Scene
Rocket from STEM to STEAM as students engage in innovative and experiential learning as they explore how STEM and the arts shaped the growth of Cincinnati through the lens of one of the city’s largest immigrant groups. Students will create art inspired by the German immigrants who settled in the Queen City, whose homeland’s Rhine River hills influenced the city’s culture and architecture. Over four days, participants will savor traditional German cuisine and discover and reflect on how creativity and innovation from this community propelled the city’s growth. Students will learn how the skills, products, practices, and perspectives of these immigrants helped make Cincinnati a vibrant, unique hub of culture and industry, and how echoes of the past can still be seen today.
