Baseball: Division I preview
Big Blue already a hit Hamilton starts season at top of coaches poll By Dave Schutte Enquirer contributor
Tradition has it that the season after a team reaches the Fmal Four, coaches vote that school No. 1 the next year. Although Hamilton lost two outstmding starting pitchers to graduation. coach Dan Bowling's Big Blue received nine first-place votes and are No. 1 in the EttQUirer's Division I preseason poD. "We were probably ranked because of our past successes," veteran coach Bowling (478119 career record) said "We're young on the mound, but we have some pretty good pitchers."
Here's a look at the top teams. 1. Hamilton: If the Big Blue remain on top, it will be because of pitchers Lance Trester (3-1, 1.68 ERA) and juniors Jon Camp, Justin Boyd and Brandon Moore. 'All of these guys pitched a little last season but not in any of the big games: Bowling said. ·we·ve @>1 quite a few hitters back, and if we get The Cincinnati Enquirer/MICHAEL SNYDER some pitching, we'll be pretty @JOCI: Hamilton shortstop Matt Wagers waits on a relay throw Nate Mahon (.467 batting~~) during indoor fielding practice at Hamilton Monday. and MattWa~ (.427) will anchor the offense along with transfer An~ infielder Brad Duesing, catcher RJ. other veterans on the team. Oak Hills: Returning starters Fred Riess (.320), Joe Besl (.385), Jason Nintrup (.370) and Dan Buchwald (.227) must carry the load for a ~ung team that lacks experienced pitching. La Salle: Coming off a disappointing season, the Lancers will be an impiOved team. Coach Phil Reichle will build the team around five returning starters and a solid pitching staff that is anchored by Adam Curley, Nick Schulz and Brad Warman. Jason Hugentobler and Mike Ertel, both .400-plus hitters in 2001, will provide much of the offense. 'Last ~ar the team struggled because of a lack of leadership; Reichle said. 10. Anderson: Jensen lewis, rated the best pitcher in Cincinnati (commited to Vanderbilt), will anchor a staff that includes Josh Keipper (3-3 record) Fred Schroeder, Rick Alsep and Matt Bolan. Sean Munninghoff and Ben Terry will shoulder much of the offensive burden for a ~ung and inexperienced team with three seniors on the roster.

Second-year Badin coach Rick Kunkel returns eight proven pitchers, the main reason the Rams were voted No. 1 in the Enquirers Divisions II-IV poll. Ross, a school located less than five miles from Badin, was voted No. 2 with McNicholas, New Richmond and Roger Bacon rounding out the top five. 1. Badin: The Rams have won or shared 10 consecutive Greater Catholic lea@.ie North Division championships and this year shouldn't be an exception. Besides veteran pitchers Chase Lampl, Zach Marcum, Stelle Sarns and Chris Sutton, the Rams ha.e excellent offensive and defensive talent back. Look forbny Nichtin (.292 batting avera~). Brett Fiehrer (.277), Graham Crain (.339) and Matt Bra~ (.304) to lead the way for an offense that could light up the scoreboard. 2. Ross: Although the Rams lost two starting pitchers, the staff will be solid as a rock. Coach Jay Lytle has confidence in veterans Wanen Sizemore and Jon Christophel with Zak Morris, Brian Guenther, Dustin Owens and Matt Meyers also expected to contribute. Offensively, Kevin Hutson (.365 batting avera~). Jeff Wilson (.348) and Matt Couch (.337) will lead the team. 3. McNicholas: After suffering through a 1315 season that was marred by injuries, Rockets coach Willy Corbett is confident the team will be vastly improved. Veterans Nate Condon (3-4 record, 3.14 ERA), Matt Buckhanan (4-0, 2.84 ERA) and Matt Kaiser (2-5) will handle the pitching duties. The Rockets also will be strong offensively with Drew Zaugg (.3 75 batting average), Joe Haarmann (.310), Nick Schmidt (.321) and Dan Hayden (.385) providing the spark. ·our strength is depth, especially in the pitching staff with four of the top five back; Corbett said. 'But we don't have a lot of team speed and lack consistent powe(. 4. New Richmond: A lack of experienced pitching might be tough to overcome. The Uons could negate this v.eakness with a solid offense that includes standout hitter Mike Halcomb, Bret Wiseman, Chris Kil@>re, Bl)'an Bellamy, John McMonigle, 1Yier Henderson and Branden Van. 5. Roger Bacon: First-year coach Joe Corcoran inherited a Spartans team with above avera~ pitching and a host of proven hitters. Roger Dicks (4-2, 3.97 ERA) and An~ Schaefer anchor the pitching staff that includes Eric Riechman, Brad Lakes and l}'ler Bien. Schaefer also is one of the top offensive players (.397 batting average) along with Tim M~ (3.29), Lakes (.355) and Ron Auer (.357). 6. Purcell Martan: First-year coach Dan Roberts inherited a team loaded with veterans, including senior pitcher Jesse Foley and a pair of promising sophomore pitchers, Andrew Spaulding and James Smith. David Fairbanks and Dustin Woods will handle the outfield duties along with Rickey Ross, Alex Davis and Matt Barney battling for the other starting spot 7. Taylor: The return of catcher Nick Katsetos (injured last season), bolsters an alrea~ strong offensive Yellowjackets team Josh Baird (24 RBI) will not only be the best pitcher (3-2, 3.41 ERA) but also will lead the offense along with Ryan Hoffman (.389) and Mike Clayton (.489). 'We return five starters and transfer Mike Sullivan will help considerably,' coach Chris Hannum said. 'Hoffman and Baird have the potential to take this team a long way': 8. Summit Country Day: Se.len starters return from a Silver Knigh1s team that v.ent 2Q-5 in 2001. Mitch Duggins (7-1 record) anchors a solid pitching staff with Steve Johnson (.567 batting average), Grant Bailey (.398) and Joe Sanzere (.560) leading the offense. 9. Kings: Taking the Knights lightly would be a mistake. Pitching will be one of the Knights' many strengths with veteran Kevin McCarty (2-1 record, 3.42 ERA), Billy McKinney (4-3, 3.66) and Brett Browning (4-2, 2.95) the catalysts. The offense also will be potent Look for Chandler Dethy (.345 batting average), Pat Geyman (.250), Jason Karlen (.281), Chris Moore, Rob westaway (.370), McConty (.323) and McKinney (.423) to score lots of runs. 10. Batavia: Pitching, speed and defense are the strengths of a Bulldogs team that could quickly rise in the poll. Coach Bl)'an Anstaett's team features se.en returning starters (Seth Ellis, Matt Heber, Mike Cook, Brian Clark, Doug C<¥~e. Matt Meyer and Bret Harris, along with a strong ~P of sophomores. The Bul~ lack a po.wr hitter, but this can be OYelt:OITle with 3JOd defense and alert base running. 10. Turpin: Solid pitching will be the strength of a Spartans team that has six sophomores battling for starting positions. Jason Seibert (3-4 record, 5.20 ERA) and Eric Ostoich (4-1, 3.00 ERA) anchor the pitching staff but without offensive support from unproven performers, it could all be for naught
