Bell pulls for Reds, Indians Rookie hopes for 1-71 Series By Jeff Horrigan Post staff reporter
ST. LOUIS- Count David Bell among those Buckeye state residents pulling for an all-Ohio World Series. The former Moeller High School standout, who was ac¡ quired by the St. Louis Cardinals from the Cleveland Indians on July 27 as part of the Ken Hill trade, was called up from Class AAA Louisville on Friday and collected his first major-league hit on Saturday. With his new team all but officially out of the pennant race, the Cincinnati native is pulling for his hometown team to meet his former team in the World Series. "Since I live in Cincinnati and we're out of it, it would be nice to see it happen," said the 22year-old son of Buddy Bell and David Bell, left, would like to see t;e grandson of the late Gus Bell, both former Reds. Disbelieving Reds say crowds 'a joke' Division runaway may be boring fans By Jeff Horrigan Post staff reporter
It's appearing that the greater the lead the Reds build in the Central Division, the less interest fans have in coming to see them. In the first three games of the seven-game homestand, only 14,851, 14,521 and 15,793 have showed up at Riverfront Stadi· um to support the Reds. On top of that, there have been 4,669, 5,132 and an astounding 10,602 (Wednesday) paying ticltet holders who were no-shows. The Reds have noticed. "It's a shame people aren't coming," second baseman Bret Boone said. "As good as we're playing, you'd expect more peo· ple." Said Cincinnati native Barry Larkin: "Iff people want to see us, they'll come see us ... I guess 1.hey don't want to see us. I'm ~ure the stri.ke has something to d.o with it." One player, who didn't want to be identified, wasn't as kind with his assessment of the poor a;ttendance.
"Fourteen thousand? What a (expletive) joke!" he said. "Cin· cinnati's supposed to be a baseball city. That's bull! I bet we won't even sell out in the playoffs." Davey Johnson wondered why the best Reds team in 20 years hasn't attracted more attention. "I always felt Cincinnati was a great baseball town," the manager said. "It was always fun to come here because there was always an active crowd; not crazy like New York or Chicago but people who enjoyed good baseball and supported a good team. This is an exciting ballclub. For the baseball purists, you have speed, power, defense and pitch· ing. There's a lot to like. There's something for everybody." NOTEWORTHY - Outfield· ers Ron Gant (strained muscle in left rib cage), Reggie Sandern (strained ri.ght quadricep muscle) and Thomas Howard (sprained left knee); and pitcher Mike Jackson (strained muscle in left rib cage) were all unavail· able to start Wednesday, although Howard appeared as a pinch hitter in the ninth and struck out. David Bell said it was "almost too perfect," Wednesday evening after he, the son and grandson of former Reds players, hit his first major league home run at Riverfront Stadium. JBell slammed a two-run homer off a 1-0 pitch from Reds starter Mark Portugal in the sixth inning, breaking a tie and leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Reds. Bell's grandfather, Gus Bell, starred with the Reds from 1953 through 1961 and totalled 206 major ]eague homers. He died on May 8 at age 66 after complications from a heart attack. Davlid Bell's father, Buddy Bell, played with the Reds from 1985 to 1988 and hit 201 career homers. He now is a coach with the Cleveland Indians. Bell, a former Moeller High player, said it would have been nice if his grandfather could have seen the home run, but Bell was pleased to make it to the major leagues while Gus still was alive. Bell was taken by the Indians in the seventh rour..d of the 1990 draft and made it to the Indians' 1 :>ig lea~e club this year. But the Cardinals ac-

But the franchise numbers for safeties are relatively low, and Turner was upset that the designation prevented him from negotiating with other teams. • EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.
Giants cut high-salaried QB New York Giants head coach Dan Reeves waived backup quarterback Kent Graham and signed ,former Denver Bronco Tommy Maddox less than a week before the season opener Monday night against Dallas.

BY TIM PENNINGT~ ,J Enquirer contributor r I iL1 The Moeller Crusa ers won the Greater Catholic League South baseball title this season, despite losing both their games with St. Xavier. Friday in a Division I sectional title game at Anderson, the Bombers continued therr· mastery over Moeller with a 7-6 come-from-behind victory. · Rocky Boiman scored the gamewinner in the bottom of the seventh on an infield single by Nick Ruszkowski, as St. Xavier · overcame an early.4~0.deficit. __ .. _ The Bombers advanced to the district tournament Wednesday at Wright State University in Dayton. Friday, Elder made it a clean sweep for the GCLN with a 17-1 win over Walnut Hills in the other Division I sectional at Anderson. · · Moeller coach Mike Cameron said his team expected St. X to mount a comeback. · . "This was just a typical. GCL game,". Ca~·eron said. 'It's the nature of the game to keep playing until the fmal out, and they proved that." · . Rick Bell blasted a two-run homer in the first' inning to give Moeller an. early lead. · . St. X tied the game, 4-4, in the fifth inning' on a two-run, single by Boiman. ' ' Moeller went ahead in the sixth, 5-4, on Marc McCullough's homer to center, but St. X scored twice in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Matt Arling and Jason ;Basil for a 6-~ lead . . I "'1• The Crusaders pushed a run a&ross in the seventh to bring St. X back to the plate, and the Bombers look care of things quickly. . : Boiman walked, was sacrificed l:o second by Mike Kuczwara arid ·advanced to third on a wild pitcli. ' · With one out, Ruszkowski hit a 'sho~back up the middle that Moeller pitcher Brad Beimesche got- a glove on, but"' shortstop Rick Bell couldn't field it in time to get the runner at first as Boiman scored. · St. X> coach Bill Slinger said he was concerned about: his team's offense' coming into the game. ' . ' "With .~11 the rainouts we've bad, our ,hitters haven't been consistent enough . to where I like them to be," he said. "But we never gave up.". :_1·.

base hits and RBI's. Brent Berigan, Nick Degenhart, Erik Frue-chtemeyer, and Pat McLaughlin are other standouts among the position players. Cameron said Fruechtemeyer's ability to be steady at catcher allowed him to keep McLaughlin in right field, .where has thrown out four base runners in 18 games. ·"He's ·(Fruechteineyer) been a· big surprise," Cameron said. "And Pat's an outstanding outfielder 'so it's helped us to be able to keep him in right field."· . Cameron said the way Moeller's playing now·, they can make some noise· in the post-seaspn tournament, which began after Press deadlines May 14 against Turpin High School. . "We definitely have the pitching to· make some ·noise," Cameron said. "It only takes two or two and a half pitchers in the tournament anyway, and I feel like our number one guy (Bell) is as good as anybody out there." Regardless of what happens the rest of the way, Cameron said he's very happy with the way the season's gone. "Absolutely, they're just enjoyable to go to a ball park with," Cameron said. "You know you have a chance t<;> win every game and that's a lot of fun."

Streaking Moeller eyes titles BY DAVE SCHUTTE 1-: Enquirer contributor

After beginning the season with losses in three of the first four games, Moeller's unimpressive baseball team was declared dead. But, going into the final week of the season, the Crusaders stand on the threshold of winning the Greater Catholic League South title along with challenging Oak Hills for the metro championship. "We were on another kind of streak now," Moeller coach Mike Cameron said. "We've now won nine in a row and are in the position we want to be going into the final week of the season." Trailing Elder (7-2) by one-half game in the GCL, the Crusaders (6-2) meet the Panthers today at Hille Field before taking on La Salle at Blue Ash in a Tuesday doubleheader and St. Xavier (6-3) Wednesday. "We'll complete the first game against La Salle which is tied going into the eighth inning," Cameron said. "We have four games remaining but all are against tough opponents." Cameron refused to count out St. X (6-3). "It's a tough road for all three contenders," Cameron said. "Elder and us have two losses and St. X has three." Oak Hills baseball coach Chuck Laumann won't have to prepare a motivational speech for the Highlanders for Friday's encounter with Colerain. The once-beaten and No. 1-ranked Highlanders suffered their only defeat to coach Don Colussi's Cardinals, and this game will probably determine the Queen City Conference champi'onship.

HIGH SCHOOLS: WEEK AHEAD
home-and-away game with Little Miami Tuesday and Wednesday.
"In in the first game, it was a matter of who struck first," Laumann said. "The Oeff) Leytze boy hit one out with two on and that was it for them." Coach Gil Voit's surprising Clermont Northeastern Rockets, front-runners in the Southern Buckeye Conference American Division, can virtually lock up the title this week. The Rockets begin the week today against Hillsboro at home before meeting Georgetown (Wednesday), Loveland (Thursday and Satur· day) and Felicity (Friday). "We have four solid pitchers which gives us the advantage with such a busy schedule/' Voit said. "But we don't play second place New Richmond until the following week." Miami Valley Conference leader Batavia can take a major step toward clinching the MVC title, facing four league foes. If coach Bryan Anstaett's Bulldogs defeat Cincinnati Country Day today and Tuesday, they will take a two-game lead over Summit and three over the Indians in the MVC. Hamilton's Big Blue can virtually wrap up the tough Greater Miami Conference championship this week with victories over Princeton on Wednesday and Friday but Sycamore is still lurking one game behind. Front-running Badin, another of Hamilton's standout teams, can wrap up the Greater Catholic North title this week, meeting Kettering Alter, Roger Bacon and Purcell Marian. Ross is also on the threshold of claiming another Fort Ancient Valley Conference title. C()~ch Ray Hamilton's Rams can wrap it up with

The Greater Catholic League may never again witness baseball pitching performances like it did Monday. Moeller High School's Eric Fischer and La Salle's Zac Day both authored one-hitters; Elder's Nic Kernen fired a four-hitter; and Ryan Pogozalski tossed a six-hitter for Hamilton Badin.
MOELLER1,PURCELL MARIAN 0- Fischer, a sophomore, won his second. Moeller scored on Doug Tereba's basesloaded ground out. Purcell Marian junior Scott Woods allowed just four hits. MOELLER at PURCELL MARIAN
