Community Press Staff w;.iter were Brad Meyer of Moeller, who kburch@commumtypress.com COLUMBUS - Mason High finished in 53rd place with a 576-8255 School's Angela Bizzari had a little more than 100 yards remairiing in Saturday's Division I girls state crÂŤ>ss country meet at Scioto Downs in Columbus. The senior and two-time state champion was staring at the final stretch wondering how long she could hold off Oak Hills' Brooklynne Ridder. Bizzari burst down the final stretch, but wasn't able to fend off the charging Ridder, eventually finishing second in a time of 18:20. Her finish, however, wouldlead the Comets to a third-place finish in the state meet with 105 points. Head coach Kelly Affatato was impressed with Bizzari's final race Âˇ of her storied career. "She had a great race. It was a real gutsy performance," Affatato said. 'M season her expectation was to finish in the top five and she was able to do that again in this race." Bizzari was pleased with her performance as well. "I was just planning on running my hardest and see where I would get in the pack," Bizzari said "I did that and it turned out pretty good at the end." In the Division I boys race, senior Tommy Morgan led the Kings Knights to a ninth overall finish with214 points. Head coach Jim Brant isn't easy to please and while Morgan's finish s.howed him some positives the team's finish left him wondering if they could've finished better. "It wasn't where we could've been," Brant said, when speaking of where the Knights finished. "Going in we thought we could be anywhere from lOth if we ran a bad race, to second or third if we ran our best race. I'm never satisfied unless we do very well. I hate to lose and hopefully I've been able to instill that in the rest of the team."

Morgan says while the Knights didn't finish quite as well as they were capable of finishing there were still some positives to the outcome. "I was shooting for top five at the beginning of the day, so I guess I'm pretty happy with my performance," Morgan said. "We were a little disappointed with our overall finish, but we still beat some pretty good teams and it feels pretty darn good to be there." Other locals competing as

Moeller runners face tough league challenge·:

KENWOOD - Moeller boys cross country coach ~vin Kohls knows his Crusader .team has some holes to fill. Mter finishing second in the district meet and sixth at regionals last season, the Crusaders lost four prominent runners to graduation, leaving Kohls with a young squad, which will be given plenty .of opportunity. "Our top spots are locked up right now," Kohls said. "But after that we have a whole slew of guys who are going to be competing for the bottom four spots." Leading the list of returning runners for the Crusaders is junior Brad Meyer, sophomore Holden Marsh and senior Michael Auciello. Kohls will look for those three to carry the load. Picking from defending state champion Middletown, La Salle (state runner-up four of the last five years) and perennial power St. Xavier is no easy task. But area coaches have tabbed La Salle No. 1 in the Enquirer boys' cross country Division I preseason poll, though Middletown garnered seven of 13 first-place votes. A look at the top teams:

Division I La Salle: The Lancers bring back 10 of 13 runners from last year's state runner-up team. In addition to returnees Kyle Lang, Greg Bader, Corey Spriggs and Andrew St. George, coach Frank Russo expects big things from juniors Mitchell Huesmann and Ricky Lupp, who missed the state meet because of an injury. "Our biggest challenge is staying healthy," said Russo, whose squad is eighth in the Nike Midwest Regional rankings. "If we can, we have an outstanding team going into the season." Seniors David Mette, Tun Mink, Dominic Lanzillotta and Taylor transfer Jordan Profitt will compete for varsity spots, too.

COUJMBUS - Call it a hunch that La Salle cross countzy coach Frank Russo has learned he can relyon. Since 1993, the Lancers have had three individual champions, including two-time winner Allen Bader (2()()()..()1), and Russo believed corning in, that each of those runners was destined to experience a championship. He had that same feeling prior to Saturday's state meet at Scioto Downs, and again his premonition proved true. With three finishers among the top 29, the Lancers scored 74 points to easily capture their first state title after placing second four of the last five seasons. "It's been a team goal, a program goal since 1986 when we finished second overall for the first time," Russo said. 'This year we were the clear-rut favorite, and to be honest, (winning) was just a gut feeling I had coming in. I just knew they were going to win." Junior Kyle Lang led the way with a lOth-place finish in 15 minutes, 59 seconds; junior]ake Neuskabel took 18th (16:10); and senior Greg Bader, Allen's brother, finished 29th (16:23). "We came here and did what we needed to do," Lang said. "We ran awesome." North Canton Hoover was second with 140 points. Middletown finished third (156), Kings ninth (214) and Elder 14th (293). Springboro's Chad Balyo won the individual title in 15:32. Kings senior Tommy Morgan finished third in 15:43.

'Tm thrilled to get third," said Morgan, who finished 12th last season. 'Tve been dreaming of this since my eighth-grade year." Wmton Woods junior Michael Perry, who became the first boy from the school to advance to state last year, placed seventh in 15:56. Other top area finishers included Kings senior Will Rover (26th, 16:20) and Middletown senior Alex Kerns (33rd, 16:25). In girls' Division I, Mason finished third with 105 points to lead a group of area teams that included fourth-place Colerain (140) and ninth-place St Ursula (216). Area individuals swept the top four spots. Oak Hills freshman Brooklyne Ridder was in third most of the race but began to make her move during the final mile and passed Mason senior Angela Bizzarri less than 100 meters from the finish line. Ridder, whose grandmother traveled from England to watch her last three races, won in 18:19. '1 felt pretty good, because I was really rested up, but I can't even believe it still," said Ridder, who was the fourth-place regional finisher and beat Bizzarri for the first time. '1 think it's really exciting being here." Bizzarri, who won in 2002 and last year, finished in 18:20 ahead of Lakota West junior Amanda Burger {third, 18:28) and McAuley junior Christina Schneider (fourth, 18:30). '1t was an awesome race," Biz.. zarri said. '1 tried my best and (Ridder) just outran me today. Probably with about 100 meters left, I could tell she was coming. She ran awesome." Individually in Division III, Cincinnati Countzy Day senior Gita Narayan placed fifth in 19:08.
