-----Original Message----From: Elder3 [SMTP:Eider3@aoi.com1 sent: Saturday, January 10, 1998 2:22PM To: Webmaster Subject: Donation to Elder H.S. Family Dear Moeller,

I am an alumni of Elder High School and visit their home page frequently. I read the story of the Moeller football team's donation to the Glacken family whose home burned to the ground. Like Elder, you have consistently shown what a class act your school is! I am glad that you are a member of the GCL and that there is another boy's catholic high school in Cincinnati that teaches same values and morals which I learned at Elder. Thanks again for being great competitors as well as great friends in Christ. Bob Flower Class of 1987

Munoz: Son a chip off the old blocker CON~INJln""faot;!Z. Al

"He got a nickname in ftfth or sixth grade," Anthony Munoz said. "They called him 'Jungle Jim,' because iri basketball·season all the kids would hang on him during the game." · Size set Michael Munoz apart at an eariy age, but it is. only a part of his equation for excellence. The father may have been the most rumble giant ever to play on the offensive line, and the son has started to. surpass him. ·Th~ torch may have passed in a game of pickup basketball tast year. Playing on opposite sides, and assigned to guard each other, Anthony Munoz gained position on his son with a smart drop step and prepared to put the. ball in the basket. The noise he heard next still·ech. oes in his ears. If.was the sound Michael made in leaping·· over his father and pinning the. ball against the backboard. ·· "He thought he was going to get an easy laYup," Michael said. "I g~ve mm· a hard time about it. I told him, 'You can't lay it up like th?t any more.'" Michael still defers to his father in football matters, and has resisted his challenge to put on ·the pads and scrimmage in the backyard. . "I think," he explained, "he has too much experience." Herein lies Michael Munoz' advantage over ·other large high ~chool linemen: His teacher wrote the textbook. .Blocking techniques Arithony Munoz mastered· over many seasons. were taught to his son years befor~ he could put them to use. Michael Munoz is consequently a more polished player than was his father at

age}_§.

"We realiy didii't have. the techni~· ,cal teaching that they have now," Anthony Munoz said. "Back then, you were taught several steps and you'd just get after people. It was a 'Get it done however you can' type of deal. "I think at Michael's age, he~s far 1· ahead. For a sophomore in high school, he's really progr:essed with his technique. He's doing things that are very impressive to me. More than anything else, it's the intensity that he has as a bi~ kid. A lot of times, when you get btg. kids, they're kind of passive; He wants to get after it on every play:" Mr. Klonne detected a strong competitive streak when he watched Michael Munoz put the shot in the Greater Catholic League track meet last spring, He was new to the event, a freshman battling seniors, and he fell behind at the beginning. "All of a sudden, you could see the competitive juices starting to flow ;•; Mr. Klonne 5aid. "His next throw was 54-8 or 54-9, and he wound up winning the meet. When I saw him doing that, I knew technically it would take him a while to catch on (in football), but that he was special." . Michael Munoz' learning curve has not been as steep as Mr. Klonne first suspected. What he sees, he is usually able to .assimilate. Some years ago, Anthony Munoz took his son to see Michael Chang playing tennis. .When father and son next swatted balls around, Michael Munoz managed to mimic Mr. Chang's spin. . Anthony Munoz was. the most modest of athletes; a superstar who evfnced no ego. But he relishes his children's accomplishments without restraint. While his son chases a state championship tonight in Massillon, his ,daughter, Michelle, will be making her high school basketball debut for .Mason. The parents are grieved they can not go to both games. .. They are sitting in a booth at the Pizza Tower restaurant, preparing to :attend a pep rally. Anthony. Munoz is wearing a Moeller cap and a .blue and gold pullover. His wife, DeDe, arrives in a sweater embroidered with the ;words, "Moeller · Mom." They aie ·like a lot of parents before big_ events - a little bit hokey, a lot proud. · "We want the best for our kids," Anthony MUiioz said. "If Michael ends up ·a 22-tiine Pro Bowler, that 'Would be great." · 1

3 champions named in Post football poll ""'

The Moeller Crusaders, Lebanon Warriors and Wyoming Cowboys were named area poll champions in their respective divisions by The Post prep sports staff. Preseason No. 1 Moeller (9-1) took the honor in Division I. It was the Crusaders first poll title since 1993 and their third in the '90s. Lebanon (1 0-0) climbed seven poll spots from the beginning of the season to win the honor in Divisions 11-111. Kickoff is 8 p.m. Saturday at Paul Brqwn Tiger Stadium in Massillon. Moeller, which has won 10 consecutive games, is making its 11th appearance in the state final. The ·crusaders are looking for their first state title since 1985, and their 11th overall. · The Crusaders are tied with Cleveland St. Ignatius and Newark Catho· lie for the most Ohio state football championships, with seven. Only Newark Catholic has made more final game appearances than Moeller, with 12. Rohlfs, a 6-foot, 185-pound senior cornerback, certainly has played an integral role in Moeller's playoff run. After intercepting two passes during the regular season, Rohlfs has picked off six in the postseason. · But none was more important than Rohlfs' second interception vs. Upper Arlington in last week's state semifinals. With Moeller leading. 16-10 in the fourth quarter, Rohlfs picked off a pass and returned it 30 yards into Upper Arlington territory.

Here's how overtime works: Both teams .get a chance to score :with the ball placed at the 20-yard line. In the second overtime, St. Xa/ 1vier went on offense first but quar~ terback Jayson Arling's pitchout :was off the mark and Moeller's Ryan Reese recovered, thwarting the drive at the 8-yard line. "The play was an option but the running back had already com· mited to block," St. X coach Steve Rasso said. Moeller took over on the 20 but only advanced the ball two yards on three plays, setting the stage for Pucke's field goal. St. X had to rally mightily just to get to St. Xavier closed to within 7 at 21-14 9:28 remaining. But it appeared the game would end that way until the Bombers got the ball back on the Moeller ·37 with just a second remaining. "We talked about Ryan running back into the end zone for a safety during the time out," Moeller coach Steve Klonne said. "But we thought he would run six seconds off the clock. It was a bad decision :on our part." Moeller faced a fourth-and-1 situation with six ,geconds remaining. Cooper took the snap and ran back to the Crusader 37 before tackled with one second remaining. Boiman, a defensive back who made 20 tackles, was inserted into the lineup for the final play. He out ran two Moeller defenders and jumped high to catch the pass. Kevin Kerr's kick tied it at 21-21. "The kids were down after the St. X touchdown," Klonne said. "We told them that they deserved to win the game because we outplayed them. They picked it up and came out and did it." Starting at the 35 rather than the 20 in the first overtime due to a roughing the kicker penalty, Moeller scored on the second play when Grant Crosthwaite took it in from 35 yards out. St. X sent it into a second overtime when Michael Larkin scored on a reverse from 8 yards out. Kerr calmly booted the conversion, forcing a second overtime. However, in the second overtime, Arling fumbled on the pitch-

out, glVlng the ball to Moeller. Pucke responded with the game winning field goal. "I was proud of the way our kids come back," Rasso said. "But we didn't take advantage of those first half turnovers and it came back to haunt us. Crosthwaite was was Moeller's standout, rushing for 177 yards on 30 carries. Overall, Moeller had 297 yards rushing and 70 passing, while St. X had 102 yards rushing and 89 passing. Both touchdowns in the first half were the result of coaching moves and defensive mistakes. St. X reached the end zone first when tailback Steve Sollmann took a handoff from Arling and went 61 yards untouched for the score. On the scoring play, the Bombers came up to the line and quickly snapped the ball which caught the Moeller defense by surprise. Once Sollmann was a step beyond the line of scrimmage, he was gone. Moeller tied the game with 1:27 remaining before halftime wheQ Crosthwaite went 41 yards around the right side. The TD was set up when Moeller lined up three receivers on the right side for the first time in the game. St. Xavier's defense react· ed, forgetting to defense the left side where Crosthwaite ran for the score. Both team failed to take advantage of opportunities in the first half with Kerr missing field goal attempts of 44 and 42 in the second quarter, while Moeller's Pucke failed in the first quarter from the 42. St. Xavier's defense came up with three turnovers in the first half, two interceptions and a fumble recovery but failed to capital-
