Traditional Greater Catholic League South powers St Xavier and Moeller head this year's Division I preseason boys' golf coaches' poll. But the Bombers, third at state last season behind runner-up Moeller, are the overwhehning choice as the area's top team. 'We plan on being major a factor," said St X coach Brian Shircliff of this year's state tournament Here's a look at the top teams:

Division I SL Xavier: The Bombers have high hopes due to the return of se-

nior Alex Martin and junior Mark Burch for the 2004 district and GCL South champion. Martin, who was 12th at state last season, has committed to Indiana University. Burch was 16th at state. Seniors Andrew Mock, Brendan

DeCenso, Matt Be~ler ~d ~or Jake Daly all are havmg unpresswe summers. "This time we're gifted with a lot of depth," said Shircliff. "On any one day, more than twelve of our varsity athletes can post excellent rounds among significant competition." Moeler. State runner&-up last season after finishing third and fifth in Columbus the previous two seasons, the Crusaders have only two returnees in seniors Tun Gusweiler, 14th at state last season, and Mike Burns. Veteran coach Rick Bohne is looking for senior David Brellenthin, junior Mark Reinhold anrl sophomore Michael Shepherd to step up. 'We have young talent, but the question is whether they can handle the pressure and expectations," Bohne said. Fairfield: The Indians should be close behind the two frontrunners thanks to a solid core of four returning lettermen.

Boys' prep goH preview Junior Michael Brown should play No.1, with seniors Tyler Vmcent and Doug Dehne right behind him. "I'll take this group to battle with me," said Fairfield coach Steve Kessler. Lakota East: Incoming freshman Aiden Javed, a transfer from South Carolina, vaulted the Thunderhawks into the area's preseason elite. He'll team with junior Nick Proud to give coach Jeff Combs "a great 1-2 punch."

Division II Wyoming, which tied forfourth at state last season, should face a stiff challenge from Cincinnati Hills League rival Indian Hill. The Braves have four returning starters, led by senior Steve Krehbiel and junior Jonathan Doyle. Wyoming brings back seniors Elliott Moore and Andy Snyder and sophomore Brendan Fogel.

Division Ill Seven Hills looks poised at least to duplicate last year's eighth-place state finish with the return of senior Austin Derkson and juniors Jonathan Coleman and Zack Wood. Cincinnati Hills Christian has its top five back as well, led by senior Andy Ellison

qualified the team for its fourth straight state tournament appearance. Seeing as the three seniors have found themselves in this situation three years in a row, it's easy to understand the confidence they have in their abilities. "I think we have one of the best teams in the state,"said Gusweiler of Loveland. "We ha\'e as much depth as anyone else does." Joining the three seniors in the Crusaders top five are cousins Mark and Matt Reinhold. The two Sycamore Tmvnship juniors posted team-best scores of 74 and 75 in the district tournament. Head coach Rick Bohne says that now with the pressure of advancing to the state tournament is gone his team can relax and play its game. "I think once you've gotten to state as an underclassmen, vou always want to get back," Bohne said. "Now that they are there'they can go out and have fun." The state tournament will take place Friday and Saturday at Foxfire golf course in Columbus. The Crusaders played in a tournament at Foxfire twu weeks ago, placing fourth and adding to its confidence. ·~ of tl:e good teams were playing there," Gusweiler said of the tournament at Foxfire. "We finished fourth and we were right there the whole time. We played prettywell." · Bohne has not been surprised by the play of this group of golfers, who he says have been looking fonvard to the state tournament all season. "We have been playing better

and better the last few weeks," Bohne said. "They've had an expectation for success and that has translated to the course." The Crusaders figure to be in a tight race lvith St. Xavier, which finished first in the district tournament, Upper Arlington, and Dublin-Jerome. Gu!-.weiler knows that this team has an opportunity to bring the state title back to Moeller if it plays to its capability. "We need to just keep the ball in play and not make any mental mistakes," Gusweiler said. LOCKBOURNE- For the fourth consecutive year the Moeller golf team captured a top· five finish in the Division I state golf tournament The Crusaders posted a 668 at the Foxfire Golf Course in the twoday event Friday and Saturday to finish in fourth place. While a top-five finish VlluJd seem to be a success for any team, the Crusaders were left wondering ''what if' when play conclude<i Satuniay. "I kind of have mixed fee:ings right now," head coach Rick Behne

said. "Finishing fourth is a great accomplishment, but these guys really believed theycouJd finish better. "They just made little mistakes out there and this is such a tough course you really can't afford to do that" The Crusaders finished behirld Dublin Jerome (634), Upper Arlington (642) and St Xavier (654). The tournament got 'off to a rough start for everyone involved Friday after the course was pounded with a dousing rain in very windy conditions with the temperature topping out at 52 degrees. Moeller senior David Brellenth!n uf Lon·Jand said while the weather\\as tough everyone had to go through it "The weather ¥tas just brutal (Friday)," Brellenthin said. "We struggled for whatever reason, but everyone was out there in it" Brellenthin led the Crusaders, finishing with a two-day total of 167, but the senior wasn't happy with the outcome. "I felt like I had a real good front

nine today," Brellenthin said. "Things kind of fell apart on the back nine." Fellow seniors T1In Gusweiler (168) and Mike BunlS (175) also ended their high school with the fourth-place finish, while juniors and cousins Mark Reinhold (172) and Matt Reinhcld (168) will return next year and try to make it five straight years of top-five finishes. "These guys really didn't play bad," Bohne said "They may seem a little down, but it's been a long season and they had some bigger expectations. But overall we had a verygood year." Dublin Jerome took the team title for the second c::nsecutive year. St Xavier's Andrew Mock took thirct-place honors, shoot:ng a 153. Andrew Mock made the turn at Weatherwax, the site of the Division I district golf tournament Wednesday, at even par. Over the next nine holes, Mock required only nine putts and recorded five birdies on the way to a new Southwest District individual round record, a five-under-par, 67. Leading by three strokes over Moeller after the front nine, St. Xavier - led by Mock's charge over the final nine holes - buried the competition and set a team district record with a final score of 290, 14 strokes better than runner-up, Moeller. "Last year we won by 15 (strokes) and that definitely set the bar for this year and I think we did pretty good," said Mock, a senior and third~year player. Mock earned the medalist award ahead of defending district medalist and teammate Alex Martin, a senior who shot a 1-under 71 to finish as runnerup. "I was kind of in shock until I got

"It wasn't all luck, but I did make as many putts as I have ever made in a round before." Mock and St. Xavier weren't alone in setting records at Weatherwax. Ursuline's Kelsey linden schmidt shot a record 4-under-par 68. Lakota West broke the girls' team record with a score of 322. lindenschrnidt, a junior who finished fifth and third respectively in the past two state tournaments, opened her round 4-under after the first five holes. She won medalist honors and qualified for the state meet as an individual since her team did not finish in the top three. 'That was awesome to watch. I kept going back to check on her and she was just in the zone today," Ursuline coach Marianne Sohms said. "She's got a great workethic. There's nobody that works any harder than she does, or wants it any more. She's just starting to come into her own." Boys' runner-up, Moeller was led by juniors Matt and Mark Rein-

Moeller on crusade to win state golf By Kyle Burch Community Press Staff Writer

by the play of this group of golfers, who he says have been looking forward to the state tournament all season. The Crusaders figure to be in a tight race with St xavier, which finished first in the district tournament, Upper Arlington, and Dublin-Jerome. Gusweiler knows that this team has an opportunity to bring the state title back to Moeller if it plays · · to its capability. "We need to just keep the ball in play and not make any mental mistakes," Gusweiler said. "On any given day any team KYLE BURCH/COMMUNilY PRESS STAFF could win, hopefully we can put it Tim Gusweiler concentrates on together that day."

KENWOOD - Tim Gusweiler, Mike Burns and David Brellenthin have been through this before. The three seniors at Moeller helped lead the Crusaders'to a second-place showing last week at the district tournament at Weatherwax golf course. Moeller's finishing score of 304 qualified the team for its fourth straight state tournament appearance. Seeing as the three seniors have found themselves in this situation three years in a row, it's easy to understand the confidence they have in their abilities. "I think we have one of the best teams in the state,"said Gusweiler, of Loveland. "We have as much depth as anyone else does." Joining the three seniors in the Crusaders top five are cousins Mark and Matt Reinhold. The two Sycamore Township juniors posted team-best scores of74 and 75 in the district tournament Head coach Rick Bohne says that now with the pressure of advanciJ;lg to the state tournament is gone his team can relax and play its game. "I think once you've gotten to state as an underclassmen, you always want to get back," Bohne said. The state tournament will take ' •lace Friday and Saturday at Foxre golf course in Columbus. The Crusaders played in a tour~ unent at Foxfire two weeks ago, ' :tcing fourth and adding to its , nfidence. 'M of the good teams were g there," Gusweiler said.
