Enquirer contributor Seniors Kate Rake! and Sara Rabe were the undisputed leaders of the state champion St. Ursula girls golf team. Rake! proved to be one of the best all-around golfers in Cincinnati with a 41 stroke average, and Rabe was just behind her with an average of 42 strokes. Because both played important roles at the state tournament, shooting identical scores of 162, The Enquirer selects Rake! and Rabe as Co-Players of the Year. When we asked coaches for an opinion as to which Division I boys player deserved The Enquirer's Player of the Yearhon?r, David Wagenseller of Wilmmgton was the on,ly name mentioned. A second-team All State selection, the Ohio State-bound Wagenseller broke every school record, averaging 36.1 strokes per nine holes while ·taking medalist honors 17 times. Anderson's Ryan Griffith takes the ball off his chest as he tries to keep one step ahead of Dayton Carroll's Chris Pohlar.

J[J)myt(())nn <Cmirir(())~n ennilll~ Annilllerr§([J)Iffi 9§ ru·nn 4l~ 1l ·· BY DAVE SCHUTTE ,' Q... 2f1..a'1?ering pass that Brian Brauchs headed past Anderson senior goalie Keith The Cincinnati Enquirer

The disparity in the number of shots on goal says it all. Dayton Carroll outshot Anderson 35-to-9 to post a 4-1 victory over the Redskins in the Division I regional s•x:cer sel)lifinals at Winton Woods Soccer Stadium. Carroll advances to the regional championship game on Saturday (7 p.m.). The Patriots will play Lakota West at Huber Heights Wayne. West earned a berth in the fmal by upsetting Centerville, the state's No. 1 team, 3-2 Tuesday. When Ryan Caton scored with 29:14 remaining in the first half to give the Redskins a 1-0 lead, it appeared that Anderson's fairytale ride through the tournament might continue. In order to reach the Regional semifinal game, Anderson made a run through the District Tournament, upsetting Milford (No. 1 seed), Moeller (No. 2) and Elder (No. 3). "Anderson's first goal caught us off guard," Carroll coach Scott Moltenter said. "They jumped on us early but after the goal, our kids started playing." . With 8:01 remaining before halftime. Matt Rabe ·sent a oerfect cen-

Afable, who was superb throughout the contest. "Carroll executed set plays better than any team we played," Afable said. "They knew what they were doing on corner kicks and on throws in, they were near perfect. Lexington Catholic is the only team we played as good or better than Carroll." "Their quickness killed us. We were outclassed," Anderson coach Frank Zuccala said. "Our fullbacks just didn't have the speed to stay with them." Zuccala was upset that Carroll's second goal was allowed. "Their forward (Chris Pohlar) was 15 yards off sides and it wasn't called," Zuccala said. "We had the same official when I coached at Xavier, and he was horrible then." Zuccala was referring to Pohlar's. goal with 29:30 remaining that gave Carroll a 2-1 lead. Pohlar took a crossing pass from Rabe and broke in toward Afable, who slipped on the wet field. "The second goal picked us up," Molfenter said. "After that, we pretty much controlled the game.". Tom Abbinante made it 3-1 with a goal with 15:18 remaining.

Winning the Greater Catholic League is Elder's first goal. If the team succeeds, , Trimpe expects the Metro championship to be within reach. "These kids want to win the state championship," Trimpe said. "They got a taste of it last year. They want to go back an~ win it all." St. Xavier's No. 3 ranking may be a little high, at least initially. Longtime coach Joan Whitaker always has a strong program, but she must replace four solid golfers. Still, there is much talent with Tom Phillips, Nick Allen, Terry Bubb, Bill McCarthy and Tim Lai. Moeller is another team with depth, led by returning golfers Eric Arlinghaus, Danny Durtlap, Ryan Detmer and Nick Lykins. "If we iron out a few things, we'll be all right," Moeller coach Rick Boehne said. "It should be another interesting season." Lebanon returns the entire

starting lineup and coach Greg Abrams is optimistic. He's looking for Brandon Berryman, Yasu Inoue, Sam Wyson, Kevin Arnold and Yoshi Inoue to lead the way. The wild card could be Winton Woods, a team loaded with talented players in Jay Tilton, Kyle MilHans and Kevin Hall. "This is probably my best team," 18-year veteran coach Tim Tilton said. "We are capable of playing with the big boys. I'm excited about the season." Wilmington, led by David Wagenseller, is No. 7 followed by Fairfield, Hamilton and Lakota West. Milford is another team with great potential. DIVISION 11-111: The race for the Metro championship is wide open, with Mariemont, McNicholas, Hamilton Badin and Kings expected to be the top teams. Mariemont, a Division III state qualifier in 1996, returns David Allen, Dustin Treftz and Joe Campo. McNicholas will rely on Andy Ey, Derek Gardner, Chad Smith and Jeff Langenbahm. · Hamilton Badin has Andy Garrett, Todd Schroeder, Tim Fritz and Brad Meiner all returning. Kent Scearce and Jason Roudabush anchor a solid Kings team.

The Cincinnati Enquirer I Dick Swaim

J.R. Taylor is one of three returning starters from the 1996 Metro area high school boys golf champion Sycamore squad. Transfers Drew Isaac and Jeff Cleeter provide added depth. Other teams in the top 10 are Seven Hills, Cincinnati Country Day, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, Taylor, Wyoming and Madeira.
