Moeller stifles Sycamore Crusaders take HOCKEY city title 10-0 - - - - - BY DAVE SCHUTTE The

There's little doubt that Rafael Courtemanche is the best hlgh school ice hockey player in Southwestern Ohio and one of the most skilled in the state. Blessed with outstanding speed and skating ability, Courtemanche was offered a contract in September by the Cincinnati Cobras, a first-year Junior B team (ages 16-20) in the Central State Hockey League. But the 16-year-old junior at Moeller decided to stick with the high school team another season. "I'm only 16 and the league .(CSHL) has 20-yearolds playing," Courtemanche said. ''I'm still young and there's plenty of time to move up to Junior B h<.><;key." Courtemanche put on a show Friday, scoring two
goals to lead Moeller (17 -12) to· a 10-0 city championship victory over Sycamore before a crowd in excess of 1,000 at Sports Plus ·Rink. · Courtemanche also assisted on two goals. "Rafael is doing pretty well this season," Moeller coach Andy Pokupec said. "But the whole league is improved and it hasn't been as easy for Rafael this season." Going into Friday's game, Courtemanche was Moeller's leading scorer with 40 points. "We're senior-laden with nine on the team," Pokupec said. "At one point we were 4-0 but we're now 17-12, which is disappointing. But we've had injury problems which have slowed us." Two of the Crusaders' wounded, Bret Dick and Tim Paff, returned to the lineup on Friday after missing four weeks, giving the Crusaders depth against the young Aviators.
"We beat Sycamore 4-2 in a tournament," Pokupec said. "Tonight we were healthy and played with a lot of emotion which was the difference." Moeller took a 3-0 lead after the first period on goals by Ben Bogucki, Kevin Carpenter and Pat Overbey. Bogucki scored one in the second period and Courtemanche and Overbey two each to give Moeller an 8-0 lead. John Procario scored twice early in the third to end the game on the 10-goal .mercy rule with 11:02 remaining. Although Sycamore is a big rival for Moeller, Centerville is the Crusaders' fiercest. Moeller and Centerville, both 11-0 in the Southwestern Ohio High School Hockey League will play at 3 p.m. Sunday to determine the league championship. "Everybody tries to play up the Sycamore game," Courtemanche said. "But everyone on the team knows that Centerville is and will be the biggest rivalry for a long time."
Crusader hockey~.._-..a heaKf~tovvard state By Dave Phillips Assistant News Editor Moeller High School shut out Upper Arlington, 6-0, in the first round of the state hockey tournament with senior defenseman Tim Paff denting the net for two ~oals. Goalie Scott Weisgerber held the opposition scoreless. · In a surprisingly easy win, Crusaders Ben Bogucki, Kevin Carpenter, Brad Gibson and Joe Obermeier also scored as Moeller ran its record to2l-l2. "It gets nothing but harder from here on out," said head coach Andy Pokupec, "You head north (to Cleveland) and the hockey teams get better and better." The next hurdle on the way to a possible state title is St. Charles, "only ranked 9th in the area, but have a couple of good goalies and a super coach in Keith Morris," Pokupec said. , Poke - as he is known - said he has 10 players who get a lot of ice time, but didn't want to put any undue pressure on anyone this time of year by naming names. He did heap tons of compliments. on "my guys who don't ge~ to play a lot. They give tremendous support and are always ready to climb over the boards to participate and contribute." Poke said he is getting great play out of his two goalies - Zach Nip-
pert and Weisgerber- who "have nearly identical statistics." He looks to start Weisgerber against St. Charles. "The last thiee games he has been phenomenal - only giving up one goal in all three," Poke said. Carpenter and Rafeal Courtemanche both have 26 goals for the season. Junior forward Courtemanche has also contributed 27 assists for the season and leads the team in total points. The Crusaders won their sixth Southwest Ohio High School Hockey League title going undefeated this year. Beavercreek, Centerville, Talawanda, St. Charles, Sycamore, Thomas Worthington, Troy, Upper Arlington and Worthington Kilbourne are in the league with Moeller. On the varsity roster are seniors John Procario, Paff, Gibson, Athony Colella, Chris Erdmann, Bugocki, Steve Beckett, Greg Macksood and Brett Bick; juniors: Courtemanche, Tim Faessler, Jeff Schneider, Mike Huffman, Nippert, Mike Macksood, Weisgerber and· Carpenter; sophomores: Overbey, Brian Purdy and Obermeier; freshmen Graham Mercurio and Doug Reuf. Pokupec just completed his fourth season on the Moeller bench and has professional playing experience in the International Hockey League, Colonial Hockey League,

East Coast Hockey League and in the European leagues·. , Also on the varsity staff are Tim Erdmann, Kevin Walsh, Greg Macksood and Buddy Payne. The junior varsity is .coached by Rob Ganz and Mark Redden. Bantam team coaches are Paul Courtemanche and Jerry Chlopek, while Dave Beenland, Joe Digiorgio and Peter Rhlers are Pee Wee coaches. If Moeller gets by St. Charles, the Crusaders will probably face Centerville, who plays Talawanda this
weekend. Then there is Findley, the number-one ranked team, who plays No. 3 St. Francis. Moeller's second-round game in the state tournament takes place at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 at Hobart Arena in Troy. If the Crusaders win they have a third round game at 5 p.m. Sunday Feb. 19, at the same location. A fourth round of games is at the Tam-0-Shanter in Sylvania Feb. 25, followed by the state semis and finals at Bowling Green University, 'March 4 and 5.
