The Moeller and Sycamore e hockey rivalry is probably 1e of the most lopsided rival~s in· Cincinnati high school >oris. While it's the biggest" rivalry 1mc in area hockey, the crutders routinely defeat the viators. In fact, no one from ther side can remember the st time Sycamore . won ~ainst Moeller. That could all 1ange Saturday i-vhen rcamore takes on Moeller at )Orts Plus. "It's the OSU-Michigan of gh school hockey in southn Ohio," said Nick Brunker, ho was a goalie · for 1camore from 1998-2002 1d does public address work r Sycamore. "That was the 1e game we circled every :ar. We could lose all our tmes and our season was a lccess if we won that one." The Aviators lost to the Cru.ders earlier in the season in closely contested 2-1 game. 1camore head hockey coach ~eg Ashton said the Aviators e a much better team now. "We clearly could've won at game so I think we feel oeller is certainly a team we .n beat,"· Ashton said.

MARK CHALIFOUX/STAFF

Moeller goalie Stephen l<elczewski has been astrong performer for the Crusaders.

"We've played some teams that tied Moeller and we beat them handily. We feel we're peaking at the right time." While the Aviators are peaking, the Crusaders are anything but. Moeller started the season strong and established a 14-game win streak from late November to early January. This helped Moeller to a No.8 ranking in the state poll, the highest it's been since the Crusaders made the ftnal four in 2005. The Crusaders have struggled lately, however, going 1-3-3 in their last seven games. "We're in a slump," Moeller head hockey. coach Mike

Reeder said. "We're having trouble putting the puck in the net and have lost some close games recently." In· addition to the re-emergence of Moeller's scoring woes, the Crusaders have had to aeal with a flu bug going around the team. It was so widespread at one point last week that more than half of the team was out of action. This will only make it harder for the Crusaders, who realize they are in for a tough game. ·~sycamore has done a great job turning their program around. We will have to play our best game to beat them," . Reeder said. While Moeller has

a history of winning this game, Sycamore always puts up a fight. · "There is a longstanding tradition of Moeller beating Sycamore," said former Crusader Steve Bennet, who played for Moeller from 20052007. "They always come out strong and everybody lays it on the line." With the two teams going in. two different directions, Sycamore has a

good chance at taking d~wn Moeller. Some don't even think it will be close. "Sycamore wins this game by at least two goals," Brunker said. "Moeller is under~ staffed compared to what Sycamore has and Sycamore has a better coach. They outplayed them last time and Moeller got lucky. Sycamore absolutely wins this one."

Moeller head coach Mike Reeder said it would take Moeller's best game to beat Sycamore.

Crusaders looking to score more BY MARK CHALIFOUX I MCHALIFOUX@COMMUNITYPRESS.COM

When you simplify the sport of hockey to the extreme, it's about scoring more goals than the other team. For the_ Moeller hockey team, it's the scoring part of the equation that's been the problem early in the season. "We're out-shooting everyone," said head coach Mike Reeder, "we've gotta put more pucks in the net." The Crusaders (4-3) have lost two games by one goal and out-shot both opponents in those games by 15 or more shots. One of those games was a close 4-3 loss to defending state champion Toledo St. John's as Moeller gave up the game-winning goal in the last minute of play. "We're getting a lot of great opportunities," Reeder said. "We had three breakaways and a shot on an open net we couldn't convert. Just finishing those opportunities is going to be the key for us." Outside of scoring, everything else seems to be in place for the Crusaders. The defense has been strong and goaltender Stephen Kelczewski recently recorded his first varsity shutout in a 3-0 win over St. Xavier. "That was huge, he's been playing great for us," Reeder said. Despite the troubles finishing, the Crusaders have been hanging with some of the top teams in the state. Reeder is also happy with his team's work ethic. "I think the guys are happy the season started, our workouts have been so hard that games have been fun," Reeder said. "We can get a lot better, but things are going well." Moeller is led by captains Kyle Fitzpatrick, Jon Korst, and Nate Han. "Kyle is leading the league in scoring and Nate and Jon have been playing a lot of minutes for us, those guys have been awesome for us," Reeder said. "The leadership from those guys has been great, they've really taken control of the team. They know what I want and they get it done." Reeder also said the team has been getting good performances from freshman Kyle Bobay and junior Ryan Boyd. He mentioned the strong play of the senior class as one of the keys for Moeller. Reeder said the only question he had about this team is if they would be physical enough to win the big game. "We may not need it until the third round of the playoffs," he said. ~
