FALL/WINTER 2010
Welcome to the makeover of Moeller Magazine! We first published the magazine in the fall of 1996 and called it Windows on Moeller. We’ve evolved since then, and now in honor of our 50th Anniversary we’re taking this “golden” opportunity to refine our look to celebrate our Marianist Tradition. Throughout the magazine we’ve woven the threads of the Blessed William Joseph Chaminade’s* vision of education, called the “Marianist Charism.” His vision was based on his love and devotion to Mary and her example of faith. As I sit at the feet of Fr. Chaminade’s statue, I feel a profound debt of gratitude. Educational research shows that the key to any school’s success is its culture, and Moeller’s culture has been grounded in the Marianist Charism for the past five decades. It has been the cornerstone of the school’s success. In this issue, we hope to illuminate how we are living the Marianist Charism day to day. For example, one tenant of a Marianist education is to “educate for adaptation and change” (meaning we believe in continuous improvement and preparing our students for the future). In that spirit, Academic Dean Chris Wilke may have initiated one of the most exciting educational software programs since the Laptop Program began. Essentially, this product unleashes the
power of technology to be a dynamic, collaborative learning tool. See page 7, “New Software Offers ‘Explosive’ Opportunity for Interactive Learning.” Our news department, now called “Moeller Today,” reports additional ways we are living Fr. Chaminade’s vision. On pages 2-4, we show how Moeller is “providing an integral, quality education” (which means we provide a holistic education involving the mind, heart, body, and spirit). On pages 5-6, we offer stories on “educating for service, justice, and peace,” as well as “educating for faith formation.” Finally, we show in several features and departments how we are “educating in the Family Spirit,” a key characteristic of a Marianist education. For example, on pages 13-14 we feature our grief group, which is a support system for students who have lost of loved one. Originally initiated in 1999, it was the first of its kind in the city and has now grown to involve 13 support groups in 10 local high schools. On November 12, The Cincinnati Enquirer featured the teen grief groups on the cover page (“Teen grief support groups in high demand: Organizations help young people deal with death, loss”). Our Moeller Family Spirit is an important part of who we are as an educational system, as Fr. Chaminade envisioned. We truly are there for one another, especially in times of need. So, let us know what you think. We are listening and always looking for better ways to communicate with you. May Mary’s peace be with you,
Johanna Kremer, Editor JKremer@Moeller.org (513) 791-1680, ext. 1330

The students brought in 1001 boxes of food for St. Vincent DePaul and the St. George Food Pantry, a new record! “As the demand increases, the Men of Moeller meet the challenge,” says Pastoral Ministry Service Director Brian Gilronan.”More than 4,000 families will benefit from this during the holiday season.”
As Moeller celebrates its 50th Anniversary, our school takes great pride in the accomplishments of our students and legacy of our alumni. Today, we continue to attain excellence in our mission as a Catholic, Marianist school by educating the whole person. Father Chaminade’s vision for education remains the bedrock of how we approach educating young men in the 21st Century. Although teaching methods have changed over the years, a Moeller education is still rooted in the five timeless characteristics of a Marianist education: faith formation; quality education; Family Spirit; service, justice, and peace; and adaptation and change. Committed to continuous improvement, Moeller has recently adopted new methods for the use of technology in our academic program, helping to prepare students for the rigors and demands of living and working in a technologically based world. Although teaching A key component of this effort is the use of the DyKnow software methods have changed program, which allows our over the years, a Moeller students to become more engaged learners and provides them with education is still rooted additional technological skills. in the five timeless (See page 7, “New Software characteristics of a Offers Explosive Opportunity for Interactive Learning.”) Marianist education: The Moeller House System faith formation; continues to improve from its inception in 2005. This student governance system also continues to assist our students with their personal and social decisions through the Man of Moeller leadership program. And the House Assemblies provided a perfect vehicle for celebrating our golden milestone through the recent 50th Anniversary Chaminade Day and Mass. (See page 9, cover feature.) While we honor and celebrate our past, be assured that the core principles that have always been the guiding factors in helping to develop the minds and hearts of Moeller students remain and will continue to grow as we look to the future! Yours in service,

WelcomeToCollege.com: Marketing Students Help Launch New Social Network Could “Welcome to College” become the next big idea in social networking? If so, you can thank the Men of Moeller for helping to launch this new Internet site that helps students network with one another as they choose the college that’s best for them. Ed Jamieson’s marketing class joined with alumnus and founder Justin Bayer ’97 and his director of partnerships, J.P. Gregory, to roll out their new business. “It is a perfect fit for my marketing class to be part of the new business start up, ‘Welcome to College,’ ” says Jamieson. “The students get a first-hand look at a business plan, marketing plan, obstacles to new business ventures, market research, focus groups, database analysis, and social network marketing. On the other hand, they get to serve as a valuable focus group because they are the primary target market.” Welcome to College’s website helps college-bound students plan, rate, share, and compare their campus visits. “Research shows the most important factor in deciding where to apply is to visit the campus,” says Bayer, who came up with the idea in 2005 while running the campus tour program for the University of Vermont. “We created this tool to help students and families keep track of the many impressions and gut feelings that occur when setting foot on campus.” The site launched in September, and Jamieson’s Moeller students were in on the process from start. “My students have

truly helped the founders tweak business decisions and have been part of this since the beginning,” says Jamieson. “They have also taken part of the marketing end of things by sharing the value of the product with their peers.” In its first week, the site drew more than 2,000 visitors from 44 states and 20 countries. “Thanks to the solid effort of the class at Moeller, we exceeded our goal of 250 users by securing 315 user accounts to the site,” says Bayer. “What I like about the business is that they have identified a serious consumer need and are trying to design a unique and user-friendly product to satisfy that need,” says Jamieson. “It’s been a win-win for all.” M
“Being part of (this) experience gives me a real-life model to successfully enact the marketing tools Mr. Jamieson teaches us in class,” says senior Buddy Naber. “Welcometocollege.com has also benefited me by allowing me to access the opinions of fellow students about their experience while visiting a prospective college and to voice my own opinions about the colleges I have visited.”

The English Department initiated the Moeller Writing Center this fall – a program held during the M-Block in the Chaminade Library throughout the year and staffed by seniors in the English Honors Program. “The center’s primary mission is to provide an additional opportunity for students to become better writers, rather than to produce “perfect’ papers,” says English Department Chair Geoffrey Girard. “The center does not, for instance, simply provide proofreading services. Instead, student tutors will assist writers in learning how to proofread for their particular pattern of errors and to edit their own work. They make suggestions and offer advice about how each writer might improve his writing/ paper. Anything from research and planning tips to paragraph organization. Then, the writer must make his own decisions about what changes he will make to his writing project and grow as a writer accordingly.” The Writing Center is open to students from all grades and for any course's writing assignment, not only English essays. Larger monitors, donated by the Moeller Moms’
Club, provide an easy way for writers and tutors to work together. The center offers an additional benefit to the tutors themselves, for the best way to learn is to teach. English teacher Eric Eble, who manages the center and works with the student tutors to develop their own Socratic-teaching skills, notes, “I’m excited to see student leaders pushing the composition process outside of the classroom and into a more relaxed, easygoing venue.” “It’s really rewarding to help teach underclassmen important writing skills,” says Michael Wright ’11. “I wish this lab was around my freshman year!" The model for the concept comes from similar centers in colleges and universities. “Such programs are huge at the college level,” says Girard, “and we hope that, overtime, Moeller’s students will find and enjoy this unique learning opportunity.”
Fall Sports Season ‘Historic’ Says AD “This fall season far exceeded even the most optimistic predictions,” says Athletic Director Barry Borman ’64. “Having all four of our fall sports teams finish in the top 10 in the city polls, in itself, was a great accomplishment. But our fall success went far beyond the city polls.” According to Borman, the list of accomplishments includes:
THE SOCCER TEAM won an outright GCL Championship and captured the sectional and district titles. They competed well at the regional level having gone as far as any team in Moeller history. THE GOLF TEAM won the GCL title and the sectional and district tournaments with record scores. They also won eight season tournaments, another school record, and qualified for state for the 9th consecutive time.

THE FOOTBALL TEAM finished as co-champs in the GCL and qualified for the 9th straight year to the state tournament. This is the longest streak of any D1 school in Southwest Ohio Region IV.
“We certainly have reason to celebrate our great success,” Borman adds. “We currently lead the GCL All-Sports Trophy standings with 25 points followed by second place St. Xavier with 19 points.”

A Special Thanks To Our Military Soon, hundreds of military personnel will receive a personal letter of thanks from the Men of Moeller. The school teamed up with General Electric and The Thank You Foundation to send care packages to the soldiers serving our country. “It is great they were able to put cards in care packages,” said Kathy HannahKlatzke, foundation representative. “I hope they know how much the receiver of these cards and packages appreciates what they have done – sometimes it is the simplest of things that makes the biggest difference.”
The ‘Men of Moeller’ Crusade for Breast Cancer Awareness One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. At Moeller, eight mothers of football players have recently been diagnosed with this disease, so this cause is personal. As part of the school’s 50th celebration this year and to honor breast cancer awareness month in October, Moeller students worked to raise money to support the ProScan Pink Ribbon Center, a non-profit mammography screening center in Over-the-Rhine that is dedicated to the education and early detection of breast cancer for the underserved women in the Cincinnati community. Using the theme “Men of Moeller Honor the Women in their Lives,” the Moeller Football Team led the effort by sponsoring penny races, t-shirt sales, and a pink bucket collection at the October 8 Homecoming football game. They also displayed a “pink wall” where students, parents, faculty, and staff listed family members and friends who have battled breast cancer. During the Homecoming game, freshman Kevin Morrison and Dakota Sizemore collected funds for the ProScan Center.

World-Famous Our Lady of Fatima Statue Visits Moeller On Nov. 22, the worldfamous international statue of Our Lady of Fatima was housed at Moeller’s Holy Family Chapel. During the day, religion classes attended a presentation and recited the rosary. In the evening there was a special presentation for the Moeller Family and surrounding parish communities.
BACKGROUND: The International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima was sculpted in 1947 by Jose Thedim. He created his vision based on the description of Sr. Lucia, one of the three young seers who saw Our Lady each month from May to October 1917 in Fatima, Portugal. On October 13, 1947, in the presence of more than 150,000 pilgrims, the statue was blessed by the Bishop of Leiria at Fatima, Portugal, to be the pilgrim, the traveler. Sent out to bring the Message of Fatima to the world, the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue has traveled the world many times, visiting more than 100 countries, including Russia and Red China, bringing the great message of hope, "the peace plan from heaven," to millions of people. Many miracles and signal graces are reported wherever the statue travels. The Pilgrim Virgin Committee was formed to carry out the mandate set down by the Bishop of Fatima in 1947, and Pope John Paul II said that the Message of Fatima is more urgent now than ever. The Pilgrim Virgin Committee continues to bring the statue to the world. (Background resource: www.pilgrimvirginstatue.com.)

New Software Offers
‘Explosive’ Opportunity for Interactive Learning Moeller students are not happy. A recently implemented educational software program called “DyKnow” (short for Dynamic Know-ledge Transfer) has become their new nemesis, and they’re ready to revolt. Taking direct aim in Eric Eble’s English class, they fired away, using Eble’s persuasive essay project to vent their frustrations: “DyKnow has a netnanny theme in which someone is watching your every move,” one group argued. Not so, counters Dean of Academics Chris Wilke. “DyKnow is NOT ‘big brother,’” he insists. “It’s a learning tool.” So which is it? Well, depending on your perspective, a case could be made that it’s both. But even so, most faculty (and parents) say that’s OK. 7 • FALL/WINTER 2010
The software has two primary components: DyKnow Monitor (a computer monitoring system) and DyKnow Vision (an interactive learning tool). The monitoring program enables educators to take remote control of students’ computers and block non-curricular activities, such as playing games or accessing websites not related to classroom activities. “Though some students resent having their freedom curtailed, most realize that it is realistic that we expect them to use the technology for learning while they are in school,” says Wilke, the initiator of the DyKnow “revolution.” “Being able to give teachers the confidence that their students (for the most part) have been significantly limited in their ability to play games and randomly surf the Web has led to an explosion in their online educational activities.” Because the monitoring software works so effectively (hence the “net-nanny” reference), the interactive

We think it was a huge success.” Advancement Director Debbie Geiger and her legion of volunteers worked all year to create this once-in-a-lifetime event, and the evening was “pure
gold” according to parent volunteer Mary Fischer. “Moeller’s celebration was surely a summer favorite, not only because of the great entertainment by the Cincinnati Pops, but in addition, great food by local vendors, music by the band Toast, the Moeller Men’s Choir singing with the Pops, and the Moeller Band,” she said. “Rozzi fireworks topped off the evening, with more than 2000 people in attendance celebrating the Moeller spirit and long-standing tradition of excellence. It just doesn't get any better than that!” “The Summer Celebration was our way of giving back to the Moeller Family and surrounding community,” said Principal Blane Collison. “We wanted to show our gratitude for their support in enabling us to grow and develop into one of the top Marianist schools in the country.” M

Educating for Faith Formation
Overcoming Grief: Finding Solidarity in Sorrow On Saturday, September 11, the Moeller Family lost a student in a tragic accident. This was the first time in recent memory that a Moeller student died during the school year. As Principal Blane Collison assembled a team of administrators and Moeller’s grief group facilitators, the team began plans to respond. “We’re about the Eucharist,” said Bro. Robert Flaherty, Guidance Department Chair. “We have an opportunity to meet this head on – and the first step in healing is trusting God’s power and majesty.” On Monday the Moeller Family mourned the loss of Josh Pflum (pictured left). Father Tom Kreidler, a former Moeller administrator, was the celebrant. His homily held a single message: “Christ can’t prevent pain from entering our lives, but He can heal it.” That day the healing began. Some teachers used this time as a “teaching moment.” Students talked about their grief in the Mentor Groups. “As the Moeller Family, we share this loss together, and we are here for one another,” Collison said. “Just as Mary was there for her Son and is here for us now, we take comfort in her love as we keep the Pflums, especially Stephen and the students involved in the accident, in our hearts and in our prayers.” 13 • FALL/WINTER 2010
The Journey Ahead: Moeller’s Grief Support Group “It’s not over,” says Sheila MunafoKanoza, a co-facilitator of Moeller’s grief group and executive director of Companions on a Journey, the largest faith-based bereavement support service in the area. “You don’t really get over the death of a loved one. You just find a way to move forward.” Munafo-Kanoza knows. She lost her husband on her son’s first day of school at Moeller. Her sons, Tony ’97 and Mike Munafo ’00, later became mentors to Moeller students working through the death of a loved one. With Father Mike Leshney’s support, her son Mike began Moeller’s first grief support group during the 1999-2000 school year. When he graduated that year, he asked his mom to continue the group. Pat Buckley, Moeller’s other grief group co-facilitator, knows the pain associated with loss as well. Her son Dan, Class of ’91, died 15 years ago. “Dan was killed in a random act of violence,” she said. “The Moeller community supported us in our darkest hour. They came to our home; they hugged us; they cried with us. As our other five sons attended Moeller, the faculty and coaches continued to be encouraging to them. They allowed our sons to grieve and grow. This is how the Marianist Charism touched our lives.” In September 2000, while chaperoning in Rome during the beatification of Father William Joseph Chaminade, the two women’s lives connected. “Sheila and I often reflect on the fact that the beginnings of our grief work together started in Italy at the beatification of Father Chaminade,” said Buckley. “His grace was certainly present.” “The Holy Spirit brought us together,” Munafo-Kanoza said. “We shared our grief journeys and talked about the importance of having a support group at Moeller.” When they returned, they met with Bro. Flaherty, who supported their initiative. Soon after their meeting, Moeller’s first crisis occurred. Teacher Jim Crone ’65 had a heart attack in the hallway at school and died. “Bro. Bob called us in to assist the students and

staff with their grief, and from there we began our first Teens in Grief Support Group.” It was the first of its kind in the city. “We had some preliminary ideas (for the grief group) that we quickly used when Jim Crone suddenly died,” said Buckley. One idea was to provide food for the meetings. “Dan Ledford (Moeller principal at the time) personally paid for the first dinner with our group at Ribs King. The boys ordered appetizers, ribs, dessert...it was a huge bill! Dan never blinked and continued to support us in every way,” said Buckley. “Blane (current Moeller principal) has also embraced our group and continues to participate every Christmas season. This has been an inspiration because his sharing allows the young men to see a different side of their principal.” “The first year we had around 18-20 students who came from day one,” says Munafo-Kanoza. “Pat and I created a program that was a safe place to come. It was a place where their feelings were validated. We educated them on the grieving process, and we ignited a place where friendships were created. The students became mentors to one another… They have shared that it truly helps them to know they are not alone.” Nick Borchers, a former pastoral minister at Moeller, said that he found the group to be one of the most valuable programs in the school. “The students who participate in this group MOELLER Celebrating 50 Years: 1960-2010 • 14
often are in a deep need of a place to express their fears, desires, anxieties, sadness, and hopes,” he said. “Their classmates don’t understand their situation; their families are dealing with their own personal grief; and they do not feel comfortable sharing with other people in their lives… I believe the community built among the students has the most lasting and significant impact on their lives.” The grief group meets monthly, and since then Buckley and Munafo-Kanoza have shepherded countless students with their journey. “The boys feel comfortable here because of these two,” said Pastoral Ministry Director Jim Elfers. “Their experience is very authentic and very sincere. Especially when dealing with death, authenticity affects the students, authenticity helps them find a comfortable spot.” “You really do see them grow,” said Buckley. But grief is cyclical, they both explain, and everyone travels this journey in his or her own way. “I still think “Moeller was the pilot for the about my dad pretty much Greater Cincinnati teen support every day,” program, which is in its 11th Mike Munafo year and is now offered at nine told the grief area high schools, including group last May Mount Notre Dame, Fenwick, when they met at Montgomery Lakota West, Lakota East, and Inn for their Hopewell. This year we will lead annual closing 110 groups and work with more luncheon, “but than 300 students. All grief I look at it in a support groups are offered free of positive way. Now when I charge to the schools and students; think of him, I funding comes through private want to make him donations and grants.” proud of me.” M

One Parent’s Point of View On Tuesday, a parent sent Moeller’s president, Bill Hunt, an e-mail, which he then shared with the faculty and staff: I wanted to give you some feedback, and to thank you for the thoughtful planning that went into the experience at Moeller yesterday. My son heard, felt, and shared every single available message there was for him to get. He was moved and touched by all that happened during Mass… After Mass, his Mentor Group had a small-group discussion where he felt safe enough to talk about his feelings and thoughts and found it helpful to hear those of the others in the group. The boys and their leaders sorted it out together, and no one had a wrong answer. It was OK to express emotion. Then on to his Religion class where they worked through it some more by talking and writing their thoughts. Maybe, most importantly, they moved to the Chapel to pray the rosary, the only action they could offer. (My son) was still spirit-filled by the time he came home from practice last evening, wanting to talk about his day, his understanding of the sadness and loss, and the impact it had on him personally. He recognized some new emotions and was OK to just feel them. But the overriding emotion was love, the love he has for his family and friends, but also the love his school family has for each and every person in it. He knows it is something really special, something he wants to be a part of, and truly the delivery of what was promised to him when he enrolled in Moeller High School. He was an important piece of the whole. I asked if he was able to do his homework, and he said he was working on it. He said he had a Religion assignment, and that was to talk to each member of his family to tell them how much he loves them. So he told me, and I told him, and we hugged for a long time, and cried together, and smiled like we had a secret, like we were the luckiest people on earth…
As I write this, I feel privileged to have recently had a one-on-one conversation with three of our students about an upcoming school initiative. In visiting briefly with these young Men of Moeller, I’m truly touched by the possibilities that await each one of them, here at school and beyond. I’m equally as touched by their real, genuine commitment to this Moeller community. I witnessed the same community commitment when the Moeller Family dealt with the tragic death of senior Josh Pflum in September, and it has been borne out again in my conversations with these three students – the Moeller Family spirit is alive and well. Meeting these three young men also reinforces the responsibility that all of us connected with Moeller High School have to continue the tradition of excellence and to provide an education deeply rooted in the Marianist tradition. We must always strive to ensure that our graduates leave here ready to fully investigate life’s next possibilities. Just as Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, founder of the Marianists, was constantly acknowledging the need to adapt to societal conditions, we also need to keep adapting and improving the education we provide here at Moeller. We must continue to communicate about who we are and what a unique experience we offer to today’s young men. We must continually search for better ways to educate so that we can keep Moeller competitive in today’s secondary education landscape. As you know, a big adaptation and change for Moeller occurred with the formal adoption of the president/principal governance model beginning with the 2010-11 fiscal year. Simply stated, our model assigns me with the overall responsibility for long-range planning, fiscal management, institutional advancement (alumni relations, development, and communications), admissions/financial aid, our Catholic and Marianist identity, facilities, and our relationship with the Archdiocese and Board of Trustees leadership. Blane’s overall responsibilities revolve around academic affairs (faculty, guidance counseling), student life and the House System, pastoral ministry, technology, and athletics.
Blane and I serve as members of our Board of Trustees, and I am constantly impressed with the passion and expertise demonstrated by this body. Within the new governance model, the Board has fiduciary responsibilities, and they are approaching their changed role in a very forward-thinking fashion. I am honored to serve alongside a principal and a board of this caliber.
As we move forward, I truly feel that if we continue to expand our students’ minds and guide their hearts to even further serve the human community, then their horizons will continue to be broadened. The possibilities and opportunities in the next 50 years of this committed Moeller community are both great and upon us! I welcome you to join me, some students, and some faculty and staff for “Tuesdays with Mary” on one Tuesday of each month at 7:15 AM. We gather in the chapel for Mass and then enjoy a cup of coffee and conversation immediately following. As this edition of the Moeller Magazine finds you celebrating the season with family and friends, my sincere hope is that the entire Moeller Family has a Blessed Christmas and a safe, Happy New Year.

Students Thank Named Scholarship Benefactors “The saying on my family’s daily calendar recently read, ‘A candle cannot light itself,” which is to say, we are all dependent on others,” said sophomore Andrew Mendel. “I would like to personally thank both the Buckley family and the Kremchek family for their wonderful generosity.” At the President’s Dinner in November, three of the 10 named scholarship recipients had the opportunity to address those families who made their Moeller education possible. “My family has had a rough time financially this past year-and-a-half, along with most other Americans,” said sophomore Mason Cooper. “Even though my parents do everything they can to keep my two younger brothers and myself in Catholic schools, without this scholarship I wouldn’t be able to attend Moeller.” Currently, Moeller has 13 named scholarships. In November 2009, Advancement Director Debbie Geiger formed the Moeller Scholarship Committee and asked Pat Buckley to serve as the chair. “Our goal was to grow the scholarship program by planting seeds of awareness,” Geiger said. “We brought together a committee of alums, current and past parents, faculty 17 • FALL/WINTER 2010
members, and staff. Brother Ron (Luksic), who serves on the committee, made us all aware of his concerns about raising funds to ensure those students who wanted to come to Moeller but couldn’t afford to do so would have the opportunity.” “For as long as I can remember, I wanted to attend Moeller,” said Gabe Stiver. “When I was growing up, I listened to my grandpa and my uncles talk about their memories of Moeller… I would see my uncle (alumnus Jim Metz, a former Moeller teacher) and share my stories of attending summer camps, and he would tell me that someday I hope you’ll be a Moeller student. Unfortunately, my uncle died of cancer, but the older I got, the more I really wanted to go to Moeller. Thank you Dr. Kremchek for letting me do this. Moeller is a very special place... There is a place here for everybody.” The students also took the opportunity to thank their parents. “I found out I had a learning disability in third grade,” said Stiver. “As my eighth grade year rolled around, my parents began to worry that Moeller might not be the best fit for me. But later my family and I learned about Moeller’s learning disabilities program. My parents knew that only a small number of students would be admitted, and on the day they could register me, there was a bad snowstorm… Since I convinced my parents that Moeller was where I really wanted to be, my dad braved the storm. I want to thank him for that because Moeller has been a great fit for me.” Moeller’s Named Scholarship program currently begins with an investment of $10,000. For more information, contact Advancement Director Debbie Geiger at (513) 791-1680, ext. 1320 or e-mail her at DGeiger@Moeller.org. Growing the
MOELLER Tradition HONOR ROLL of Donors July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010 There are many ways to become involved and give back to Moeller High School. During the past year numerous parents, friends, and alumni volunteered their time, talents, and treasures. These individuals appreciate the value of a Moeller education and realize the impact of their gifts. Private giving unquestionably provides the margin of excellence between good and great. As you read this issue of the Moeller Magazine, we hope that you, too, will enhance that margin and encourage others to support Moeller as well.

Rich Traditions At Moeller, the “Rich Traditions” extend far beyond the school’s renowned athletic success. Its richest tradtion lies within its Marianist Charism – Fr. Chaminade’s vision of educational excellence. This mission ensures young men receive “a quality, integral education,” which means Moeller educates the whole person – mind, body, heart, and spirit. Building on Our Success We have so many reasons to celebrate and be thankful this year. Along with commemorating our 50th anniversary, we are blessed to have your support, as outlined in this impressive list of donors. Thanks to all of those listed, our 2009-2010 “Grow Moeller” Annual Fund Campaign raised a new record of $873,000! We are now building on that success and have set our 2010-11 goal at $1,000,000. This will enable us to continue moving forward in our efforts to close the nearly $2,200 gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Moeller education. I hope you will continue to generously support the efforts of a lot of great people to “Grow the Moeller Tradition.” Every contribution helps build the foundation that unites us all in one cause – to educate young men in the spirit of Father Chaminade’s vision. To graduate great Men of Moeller. Sincerely,
Bill Hunt, President

Crusader Connections John Boehner ’68: U.S. Speaker-in-Waiting Moeller can now add “Speaker of the House” to its list of renowned alumni accomplishments. John Boehner ’68 becomes the presiding officer of the U.S. House of Representatives once the 112th Congress convenes on January 3, 2011. The Speaker is third in the presidential line of succession and works to set the majority party’s legislative agenda. Besides headlining the major newspapers in the country, Time magazine featured him in November, and 60 Minutes is currently producing a segment to be aired in December. Characterized as a “hard worker and team player” by former Coach Gerry Faust in the Time cover article, the journalists describe the Speaker-to-be as “a self-made businessman with working-class roots who obviously cares about more than his golf game, an amiable consensus builder who learned his people skills growing up with 11 siblings and one bathroom… Members of both parties agree that he keeps his word.” He’s an honorable man. A Man of Moeller.

Presented to an individual who through years of tireless effort has made significant contributions to the growth of Moeller: Jack Long began his decades-long support of Moeller in 1967 and joined the Dads’ Club in 1979. Under Coach Bob Crable, Long assisted the football program by chaperoning the team bus and handling all the chapel duties for the football team, which he continues to this day. Long and his wife of 47 years, Janice, have three children: John Lambert ’83, Jennifer (Pete Hopewell ’91) and James Patrick.
a graduate who exemplifies good character, a solid spiritual life, academic excellence, a willingness to serve, and participates in various school activities: School Vice Captain Troy Suter ’10 was the president of the National Honor Society and received numerous academic honors, including the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award and John Massarella Award. graduate who has given outstanding service to his community and who has distinguished himself as a Moeller alumnus: Lt. Col. Thole served 20 years as an F-16 fighter pilot and was chosen in 2001 to be one of 10 initial pilots for the F-22, the world’s most lethal combat aircraft. He retired in 2009 as Chief of the Weapons and Tactics Branch, Air Combat Command, Langley AFB, VA. He has been awarded the Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, and Arial Achievement Medal.
Crusaders in the News Ted Torbeck ’74 Named President of Cincinnati Bell Communications: Cincinnati Bell Inc. named Theodore H. Torbeck will have responsibility for the planning, marketing, sales and operation of all of the communication lines of business at Cincinnati Bell, including all consumer and business wireline and wireless products. He will report to Bell Chief Executive Officer Jack Cassidy. (The Enquirer and Bloomberg News, September 10, 2010)
Andrew Brackman ’04 Promoted to Yankees: Former Moeller High standout Andrew Brackman ’04 was called up by the New York Yankees today. He reports to New York on Tuesday. Brackman was selected by the Yankees in the first round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft after playing baseball at North Carolina State. (The Cincinnati Enquirer, September 20, 2010, Enquirer's Mike Dyer contributed)
Life More than Baseball to Brent Suter ’08: Being left-handed and able to throw a fastball 90 mph is often an express ticket to the major leagues. But Brent Suter ’08 of Anderson Township has a lot more going on in his life than just baseball. The 2008 Moeller grad (class salutatorian) is currently the ace pitcher for the Hamilton Joes of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. It's the wooden bat league that the Cincinnati Steam plays in… Suter was selected as the game's starting pitcher and a dozen pro scouts were watching. Also occupying his time this summer is the “SURF” program at Children’s Hospital. His mother, Shirley, a high school and college swimming champion, said, “SURF is a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship and part of the University of Cincinnati Medical School. Brent is in the cardiology department.” Majoring in environmental science and potentially pre-med, Suter will advance to his junior year this fall at Harvard University. Michael Simon ’83 Hungary’s Most Successful Software Entrepreneur: On a whim, Michael Simon ’83 sprinted off to Hungary after finishing business school in St. Louis. Twenty years later, he has carved out an unusual niche as perhaps Hungary’s most successful software entrepreneur. Simon’s latest creation to bubble out of Budapest is LogMeIn, a 400-worker outfit that makes software that allows one computing device to take control of another. Using this technology, a person can tap into a home or office PC while on the road with a laptop. Customer support technicians also use LogMeIn’s products to take control of people’s machines and fix their PC problems. (By Ashlee Vance, The New York Times, October 11, 2010) Note: Mike Simon, Moeller Class of ’83, completed his undergraduate work at Notre Dame University.

Men of Moeller, with great pride we announced our new Alumni Board at the October 28 alumni meeting. In addition to the board, we have had many alumni step up and serve in the role of a class captain. We certainly want all of our 10,000 alumni to be a part of our great Alumni Association! We cannot do this without your help. Currently, we only have some contact information for about 75% of the graduating classes. The Alumni Board’s and class captains’ number one goal is to reconnect with all of our “lost alumni.” Please help us by contacting your class captain, a board member, or the Advancement Office at Moeller. As we continue to build our database, our alumni events, reunions, and networking opportunities will continue to improve. Please visit our website (www.Moeller.org) to update your contact information and to learn more about the Alumni Association and events. Thanks for your help.
