“Through These Doors Walk the Men of Moeller,” says the signage over the entry into the central section of the building. It harkens to the days when that phrase was first painted on the door leading to the lower-level locker rooms that proudly reminded our athletes they were the “Men of Moeller,”evolving into a winning tradition in all sports. Now, the phrase has an even richer meaning, deepening to encompass the holistic development of our students. By the time they graduate, it is our hope that they see themselves as the Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, envisioned more than 150 years ago: as young men of faith… formed academically in a family-oriented community… committed to service, peace, and justice… and constantly adapting to our changing world. It is these aspects of being a Man of Moeller that we highlighted in our new exhibit that now graces the main hallway of the school. Called the “Timeline,” it visually chronicles the five timeless Characteristics of a Marianist education from the past 50 years. And underneath each section are literally hundreds of statements from our alumni defining parts of who they are as Men of Moeller. We dedicated and blessed this exhibit in September, and we cordially invite you to visit Moeller to experience it in person. (See “New Timeline Tells the ‘Truth’ about THE MOELLER STORY,” page 25.)

MOELLER STORIES: Scholarships Impact Lives I’m putting these thoughts together as we end the school year’s first quarter. The beginning of the 2011-12 school year has come and gone already, and I am reminded of how blessed I am to be working together every day with a great group of students, faculty, and staff. I hope that all of us in the Moeller community will be open to learning new things this year and really stretch ourselves.
how they can continue to have a sense of wonderment for their faith. How do these young men move into the world following Christ—being more loving, more patient, and more forgiving? Our young men become more formed in their faith. And while one need not be a Catholic to attend Moeller, we believe that to be a student at our school is to experience a rich, Christ-centered community.
I think it was Aristotle who told us that we are all the sum of our actions and our motivation. The actions and motivation are something to behold here on a daily basis. I get a chance to witness students, parents, faculty, staff, and even our Board of Trustees working hard to further enhance the excellence of Moeller. Our faculty and staff are a remarkable group of individuals whose collective actions deserve our thanks. Our Board of Trustees gives focused and heartfelt expertise towards the strategic direction of Moeller. Our parents give selflessly and enthusiastically in a myriad of volunteer roles, whether it is supporting fundraising or community-building efforts. Our students also contribute through their motivation in the classroom and grasping all the co-curricular activities available to them with both hands.
Our faculty works hard with our young men to appreciate all kinds of literature; to write an analysis on a certain topic; to identify and solve problems of all kinds; to think critically; to perform publicly; to move the conversation forward; to dip into the often tragic but all-important specifics of history; and to work collaboratively. Our young men learn how to achieve academically.
It’s my belief that one of our challenges and thus one of our opportunities is to stay laser-focused on our mission. I’ve had some very recent opportunities to participate in some of our student recruitment efforts with our Admissions Department. Throughout the course of these information sessions, numerous reasons are cited as to why a prospective student and his family should choose to attend Moeller. There are numerous reasons, of course, but it always seems to come back to the mission. When talking about our mission, prospective students and families are rightfully entitled to know what we’re doing to help these young men grow individually, be formed in their faith and to achieve academically. Here is what we’re doing to live this mission: Our House System develops powerful leadership and collaborative skills. Young men come to us as wide-eyed freshmen. They experience a diversity of thought, people, club opportunities, athletic opportunities, House leadership possibilities, and then grow, as individuals, into Men of Moeller. Our whole school, especially our Pastoral Ministry staff, works hard to help our young men realize who they are, what they strive to be, and
Tyler Himes ’14 (photo right) also had a story to tell that morning. “Since I was in the second grade I knew I wanted to go to Moeller. I couldn’t explain why. I had no legacy, and no one pressured me to go. It was my own decision. I always knew that Moeller was something different…”
What a powerful list that certainly emanates from! They come out of our Marianist roots and should be at the center of all of our daily actions and motivations. If an action or initiative is not serving our mission, it should be critically questioned. We need to draw on tested experiences and hold on to what works; we need to introduce new thinking and new approaches where appropriate; and we need to stop what isn’t working. Further, in trying to deliver on our mission, the name “Moeller High School” must become synonymous with excellence, integrity, and outstanding quality and service. The service aspect of this delivery becomes another of our opportunities and even more crucial than ever, whether dealing with a prospective student and his family, a faculty or staff member, an alumnus, a parent – you get the idea. We need to always be working towards promising less and delivering more…every time. If we keep our mission simple, based in our roots and focused, then we will turn this service delivery from a potential obstacle into a stepping stone.
Now a sophomore, Tyler can explain why he made that decision. “Academically Moeller has challenged me to do the best and be the best I can be,” he said. “I take Honors and AP classes. In grade school I was one of those kids who never studied for a test and still got all A’s and B’s. Now there are nights when I have three or more hours of homework… Moeller has led me to realize that anything is possible if you have the will and desire to accomplish it. It truly is a gift to be here.”
Are we perfect? Absolutely not and never will be. We must, however, commit ourselves to excellence every day. We have our moments, just like any other “family.” In this broad and ever-growing Moeller Family, though, I’d like to see an important four-letter word become commonplace: “help.” If we all constantly look to help all of our stakeholders (and anyone associated with Moeller is a stakeholder), treat all whom we encounter as we’d like to be treated, and work hard to see stepping stones instead of problems, we’ll continue the building of this great community together. This call to a mission focus and a service journey must become our hallmark and our excellence. As St. Paul said to the Phillipians: “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is gracious, if there is anything worthy of praise, if there is any excellence, think about these things.” My very best to all in the Moeller Family for a safe, restful, and blessed holiday season!
Bill Hunt, President
Matthew Abele ’13, Schlueter Family Scholarship Recipient
Despite all of our action and motivation, we certainly still do face challenges. How we examine and deal with them is what really defines us. We can view them either as obstacles or stepping stones – problems with all of the associated negativity or stepping stones with their associated opportunities.
Harvard graduate Matt DePetro (photo on top right), Moeller Class of 2001, flew in from Silicon Valley, California, to address the Moeller scholarship students and donors at the school’s Named Scholarship Breakfast Program in September. He had a story to tell and an important message to give: “Moeller is a foundational experience, not an end-game,” he said. Moeller’s “foundation” enabled Matt to pursue his dreams: graduate from Harvard in 2005 with a bachelor’s in engineering; work on a team that developed the microprocessor for the world’s fastest computer; play pro/semi-pro football in Japan, and more... None of this would have been possible without the aid of an academic scholarship.
Scholarship benefactors Dr. Elmer and Carmelita Schlueter (photo on bottom) had their own story to tell the guests. Their son, Eric “Rick” Schlueter, graduated in 1968. He was Moeller’s valedictorian, involved in student government all four years, and played baseball for Mike Cameron during Cameron’s first year as head coach. (During Rick’s senior year, the Crusaders won their first GCL Championship. “It sorta helped that Buddy Bell played third base,” said Dr. Schlueter.) Rick continued his education at the University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, and Harvard Law School. In 1977, he accepted a position at Conoco and moved up the ranks of leadership until he became a top executive. Then, sadly, at the height of his success,
Rick was killed by a hit-skip driver in 2006 while riding his bicycle. He was 55. In response, Rick’s parents established the Eric J. Schlueter Scholarship to memorialize their son and to pass on the lessons that they believed Moeller students could learn from his life: 1. Develop strong family values. 2. Follow your dreams. 3. Finish the job that you started to the best of your ability. These stories are at the heart of the Moeller Scholarship Program. In November 2009, a new scholarship committee was formed. Thanks to their leadership, the number of Named Scholarships has grown in the last two years from 5 to 21. All scholarships are based on financial need, academic excellence, and donor-specific criteria. To honor both the donors and recipients, the committee re-initiated the Scholarship Breakfast. “The scholarship program not only profoundly impacts the lives of the recipients,” said Advancement Director Debbie Geiger. “Creating a Named Scholarship also helps fulfill the dreams of the donors, either by honoring or memorializing a loved one. For those of us who fervently believe in the value of a Moeller Marianist education, there can be no greater gift.” Principal Blane Collison articulates the essence of this “gift” when he addresses parents about the power of a Moeller education: “We believe the Marianist Characteristics provide the foundation for developing leadership in young men. The mission of a Moeller education is to assist parents in helping their son make responsible choices and lead them to use their talents and gifts in service to others and for the benefit of society. Ultimately, we are not just developing the best leaders in the world. We are developing the best leaders for the world.” “Moeller is deeply grateful to our donors for establishing or contributing to our Named Scholarship Program,” said President Bill Hunt. “As you can tell, our scholarship program enhances the lives of many of our students as well as our donors. Thanks to your efforts, we look forward to continuing our mission of forming young men of faith, helping them achieve academically, and ensuring their individual growth.” M
BREAKING NEWS: Alumni Association Vice President Nick Hodge ’94 just announced the new Alumni Class Scholarship Program for each graduating class. “These scholarships will help ‘bridge the tuition gap’ and will provide a way for our graduating classes to directly impact the life of a future Man of Moeller,” he said. “(Alumni President) Phil Kreiner ’76 and I have spent the last year in discussions with our Class Captains, and we have learned that one of the most pressing concerns of our alumni base is the rising cost of tuition and the inability for future young men (especially children of alumni) to attend because of that cost. Every year there is significant demand for tuition assistance that goes unmet. Our goal is to fund each Class Scholarship as quickly as possible to begin witnessing the benefits of tuition assistance.” For more information, contact Advancement Director Debbie Geiger at DGeiger@Moeller.org or call (513) 791-1680, ext. 1320. M ELLER FALL/WINTER 2011
As you may have read, the cover story in this issue is about our new Timeline exhibit that we believe reveals the “truth” about “The Moeller Story” and the Men of Moeller. On a personal note, I can attest to the veracity of the four-year evolution of the young men. From the day they enter as freshmen, they begin a journey that includes annual spiritual retreats and daily involvement in the House System. The faculty challenge them academically and use the most up-todate laptop tools to reinforce their learning. Even more, the entire faculty, staff, and administration also challenge them to become better men, better Christians. One recent example of this was a bus trip to Lucasville prison that several of our students, parents, and faculty took to pray for Reginald Brooks who was executed by the State of Ohio on November 15, 2011. The contingency then traveled on to Columbus to attend a press conference on House Bill 160, which seeks to abolish the death penalty. Several also students joined with Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking and internationally renowned advocate against the death penalty, to talk to Governor John Kasich and urge him to place a moratorium on the death penalty while an Ohio Supreme Court task force studies this issue. (See page 7, “Sister Helen Prejean: ‘We are killing the killers to show that killing is wrong.’ ”)
What was unique about this social justice experience is that it evolved from an interdisciplinary academic initiative. During this past summer the entire student body read Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the U.S. Throughout the year, all academic departments are using this book and its themes surrounding the death penalty to show the inter-connectedness of the various academic areas – reading, writing, math, science, art, etc. – demonstrating that they don’t exist in isolation and that they have meaning in our lives… (See page 8, “Walking in their Shoes: Art Students Create Walking Reminders of the People Who Await the Death Penalty.”) To put it simply, there is a strong culture at Moeller that gently, yet persistently helps mold these young men into the Men of Moeller they become upon graduation. I know this firsthand, for not only have I seen this throughout my 15-year tenure at Moeller, but my son, Joe, will become one of those Men of Moeller in May. My husband and I have witnessed Joe’s metamorphosis these past three-plus years and can attest to the impact this school – this Moeller Family – has had on his life. So many “Moe-ments” and people have contributed to his growth… And it’s different for each student. But whether it’s an evolution through a young man’s involvement in academics or athletics or the arts or House leadership or Pastoral Ministry or Kairos retreats or something else, there nevertheless is an evolution. Before you know it, he has become a Man of Moeller… And we couldn’t be more proud. May Mary’s peace be with you,

During a young man’s high school years at Moeller, he is continually exposed to the five Characteristics of Marianist Education, better known as the C.M.E.s. Each component part of his education in some way draws upon the C.M.E.s, as well as heightens his awareness and understanding of their importance to being a “Man of Moeller.” This year, Moeller is focusing on the fourth Characteristic, “to educate for service, peace, and justice.”
This past July Service Director Brian Gilronan arranged for a group to travel to a Navajo Indian Reservation located in Thoreau, New Mexico. The trip was designed for students to experience firsthand the issues facing Native Americans in the United States. I, along with Geoffrey Girard and eight students, were privileged to be a part of it. During the course of the week we helped residents on the reservation by painting the community center and reservation thrift store, cleaning up mobile home lots, along with the school grounds at St. Bonaventure School, moving and storing clothes for the reservation thrift store, providing fresh water from the St. Bonaventure water truck to residents, and traveling into remote areas of the reservation to view the conditions for elderly residents and their families.
To this end, the entire Moeller student body and faculty read Dead Man Walking by Sr. Helen Prejean, an initiative spearheaded by English Department Chair Geoffrey Girard. Faculty and students are continuing with activities throughout the year that will highlight the issue of capital punishment. FALL SPORTS WRAP UP: Football Captures First Outright GCL Championship Since 1997! By Barry Borman ’64, Athletic Director
NEW ‘CHAMP CUP’ HONORS MEMORY OF JIM CHAMPLIN ’72: Jim “Champ” Champlin ’72 wore many hats during his tenure at Moeller, but his most prominent role was as Trinity House Dean, one of the founding leaders of the House System. After Jim passed away from cancer in June 2011, the administration chose Dan Dever from Moeller’s Pastoral Ministry Department to become the new Trinity Dean. Dan’s first initiative was to create the “Champ Cup,” which is similar to the Marianist Cup that is awarded to the House with the most points at the end of the year. Dan decided that individual Mentor Groups within Trinity House would compete against each other in activities where everyone could participate. “Champ was instrumental in getting students involved,” Dan explained. “The Champ Cup will be awarded to the Mentor Group with the most activity-related points at the end of each quarter and will reside in the room of the winning Mentor Group. The Champ Cup will be a constant reminder of Jim and his legacy. Trinity House is what it is today because of him.”

BRITISH LIT TEACHER FEATURED SPEAKER AT CONFERENCE: British Literature Teacher Michael Rose was a featured speaker in September at the Life Technology & Science Conference at the Engineer’s Club in Dayton, Ohio. He gave a presentation on teaching Frankenstein and Brave New World in the context of contemporary biotechnology and medical experimentation.
STUDENTS ATTEND MAYERSON LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP: Six students attended the Mayerson Leadership Workshop held at the University of Cincinnati this fall: senior Joe Kremer; juniors Matt Messina and Harry Wahl; and sophomores Zachary Bonn, Matt Shannon, and Kyle Zimmerman. This service-learning program sponsored by the Mayerson Foundation is designed to encourage and empower students to initiate meaningful service projects within their school and community. Moeller's current support for the Ugandan School, Unified for UNIFAT, evolved from one of the previous Mayerson presentations, as well as the school's Green Giants recycling program.
SENIOR PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM: Scott Nugent ’12 participated in the Economics for Leaders summer program conducted at Vanderbilt University. He is one of 50 students from around the country accepted into the Foundation for Teaching Economics program. Students selected demonstrated excellent leadership potential. During the week-long Economics for Leaders program, students attained an understanding of economic reasoning principles and how to employ these concepts for successful and effective leadership.
GREG STANFORTH '67 SELECTED TO PRESENT AT THE NAEA CONVENTION: Department Chair Greg Stanforth's presentation, “Creating a Culture of Sketchbooks in a High School Art Program,” will be part of the National Art Education Association’s (NAEA) National Convention in New York next March. His session is scheduled as a “Best Practice Lecture.”
BREAKING NEWS: Moeller Wins Nike Rivalry Uniform Contest! Out of 718 high schools, Moeller won the Nike contest that highlighted football traditions across the country. The prize is new football uniforms for 2012, valued at more than $17,5K. Alumnus Rob Ebel ’82, the webmaster of the new Moeller athletic website (see below), created and submitted the winning video.
STUDENTS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN UGIVE INTERNSHIP: Two seniors (Joe Kremer and Scott Nugent) and two juniors (Matt Messina and Andrew Mendel) participated in UGive’s five-week summer internship program designed to engage students in hands-on service opportunities, build leadership skills, and place them in a position to make a real impact on the Cincinnati community. The interns experienced a poverty simulation led by St. Vincent de Paul and spent their Wednesday mornings in Over-the-Rhine. They also planned “Step Up Cincinnati,” the region’s largest one-day, student-run service event. During this event, Joe Kremer '12 won the $500 Summer Internship Scholarship.
JUNIOR ELECTED VICE MAYOR OF CINCINNATI YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT: Following campaign speeches to about 200 Cincinnati area high school students, Nick Staresinic ’13 was elected vice mayor of the YMCA's Cincinnati Youth in Government. Nick was selected to participate last year as well.
We had another great fall season! FOOTBALL: Football captured its first outright GCL Championship since 1997; we placed several players on All-League and All-District Teams; and Coach Rodenberg was named GCL Coach of the Year. Moeller qualified for its 30th appearance in the State Football Playoffs and 10th consecutive year qualifying for the playoffs, which is the longest Division I streak in the state. Our football team played one of the most difficult schedules in the country, and Coach Rodenberg and his staff prepared our team well as we moved into the regional championship game against St. X. SOCCER: Soccer made it to the District Finals before losing a tough overtime game, while Crusader Chris Nartker was named to the All-State Team. GOLF: Golf just missed qualifying to the State Championships this year by a couple strokes. The golf team had qualified nine consecutive years to the State Tournament. CROSS COUNTRY: Cross Country had one of its best teams in several years carrying a squad of over 60 athletes. OVERALL STANDINGS: Now we find ourselves second in the league standings for the All-Sports Trophy as we move into a challenging winter season.
MOELLER INTRODUCES NEW WEBSITE:
JUNIOR EARNS EAGLE SCOUT AWARD: Mitch Hoelker earned his Eagle Scout Award recently by rebuilding a shelter by the Blue Ash YMCA. “To get the project going I had to figure out how to fund it. I noticed the YPC (Moeller’s Youth Philanthropy Council) application in an email…,and they gave me $900, which almost funded the whole project. I really feel that YPC is a great way for Moeller to leave a footprint in our community. It tells people what Moeller is all about – our mission to help others and the community.” Mitch and family friend Marvin Boyer (photo above) who earned his Eagle Scout rank 41 years ago.
FRESHMAN EARNS YMCA’S HIGHEST ACCOLADE: Anthony Whyle ’15 was recognized with the highest accolade at YMCA Camp Ernst: Honor Camper. This award is given to a student who displays outstanding character qualities. Only 2% of the nearly 3,000 campers who attend Camp Ernst are chosen for this award. The staff of more than 100 nominate campers who are examples of the YMCA core character values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility.
PASTORAL MINISTRY NAMES AWARDEES: The Pastoral Ministry Department honored three students with the Charlotte McCullough Award for service: (pictured above) Kyle Zimmerman ’14, Francis Ittenbach ’12, and Matthew Messina ’13.
70 STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SUMMER SERVICE TRIPS: More than 70 Moeller students participated in eight different summer service trips that ranged from experiences in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine, to a Navajo reservation in New Mexico, to a rural village outside of Truijillo, Peru. In Peru, 16 students worked with students from the Marianist school of Collegio Santa Maria Marianistas in a rural village called Otuzco. They also expanded their cultural horizons by visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Machu Picchu.
During the summer, Moeller redesigned its website and introduced a new athletic website within its structure (see www.Moeller.org under “Athletics” or go to www.LetsGoBigMoe.com). This new athletic website features broadcasts, video clips, photos, team updates, announcements, news, and much more. Alumnus Rob Ebel ’82 is the designer and webmaster… A month after its debut, the site passed the one million view mark. “We broke a record,” said Ebel. “We went over the 1,000,000 view mark faster than any other school in their company's history.” The company sponsor, iHigh.com, has been in business for five years and has 4,120 active high schools across America.

But first she had her own story to tell. Sr. Helen talked about growing up in a segregated southern town, where there was a portable electric chair just down from her school. But nobody knew about it. It was removed from their sight. “We need to wake up!” she said. “But we don’t need to do this on our own. God wakes us up! Jesus is on the side of social justice… The first pages of Dead Man Walking are about when I woke up – when I found Jesus while working with the poor.”
Sr. Helen was talking about Patrick Sonnier who was on death row in the Louisiana State Penitentiary in 1982. He and his younger brother were convicted of abducting a teenage couple, raping the girl, and then forcing the young people to lie face down while they shot them in the head. “What could be more outrageous than the death of two innocent teenagers? But when Patrick asked her to be his spiritual advisor she said, “Yes, I will be the face of Christ for you.” But Sr. Helen insisted she wasn’t a hero in this story. The true hero was the father of the young boy who Patrick killed. She called herself a coward for not contacting the victims’ parents. “I did nothing for the victims’ families,” she said. “It was cowardice.” She was convinced the families wouldn’t want to talk with her – that they would be furious with her for advocating for Patrick’s life. Then she ran into the families after Patrick’s hearing, and while the family of the young girl who was killed walked quickly by, the young boy’s family introduced themselves. The father of David told her about the pressure they were under regarding the death penalty and asked her to pray with them. “You need to know what we’re going through,” he said. “He’s the real hero,” Sr. Helen told the audience. “He’s the one who reached out to me.
7 • FALL/WINTER 2011
So I prayed by his side – a man who was on his way of living the Gospel of Jesus.” “Forgiveness. I never understood it,” she said. But David’s father showed her what it meant… “I feel pressure,” he said. “I feel I have to be for the death penalty because it will appear that I didn’t love David if I’m not… But I don’t like the way it makes me feel. They killed our son, but I’m not going to let them kill me. People think forgiveness is weak, but I see it as coming out from under the burden of hate and bitterness and going down the path of love.” “He also prayed for Patrick’s mother that morning,” said Sr. Helen, “and he found his way to that mother’s door with a basket of fruit. ‘I’m a parent like you,’ he told her, ‘and I don’t hold you responsible for what your sons did.’ ” Victims’ families need our support on their journey, explained Sr. Helen, including the mother of the killers as well. “Picture this if you can,” she said, “We can reach out with both arms like the cross.” And she did. Then she paused and offered a challenge: “An eye for an eye? Where’s Christ in that? There is no dignity in this death. Are you for vengeance or compassion? Are you for love, or are you for hate? We’re killing the killers to show that killing is wrong!” The gym was silent. And the rain drummed steadily in the background. She quietly added, “Say no to the death penalty.”
CALL TO ACTION Sr. Helen invited the audience to act on their conscience and join the nationwide movement of Catholics against the death penalty. She asked them to sign a petition to the governor calling for a moratorium on the death penalty while the task force conducts their study on this issue.
She also offered to sign her two books, which were available for purchase afterward (Dead Man Walking and The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions).
“Tom Dybdahl…tells me about Williams funeral and that his mother would not let the embalmers hide the burns on her son’s body. ‘The casket was open, and you could see the deep burn marks on his head and the calf of his leg,’ Tom says.
When the evening wrapped up following a brief Q&A session, Sr. Helen invited the audience to act on their conscience and join the nationwide movement of Catholics against the death penalty. She offered these parting words: “Conscience is something that the Catholic faith teaches us... But we must form our conscience in the Gospel.”
“About a week after the Williams execution I visit Pat. His eyes are dark and he looks pale. He’s having trouble sleeping, he says. He had seen an artist’s sketch of the Williams execution in the Baton Rouge newspapers and noticed that Williams was barefooted.
EPILOGUE
‘If they take me, I’m going with my shoes on,’ he says.” (Dead Man Walking, p. 44)
At 6 AM the next day, a bus loaded with Moeller students, faculty, and parents traveled to Lucasville prison to protest the execution of Reginald Brooks. They were among the hundreds of people that morning offering their prayers. The contingency then traveled to Columbus where they attended a press conference and met with Senator Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, and State Representative Ron Maag, R-Salem Twp., to urge support for House Bill 160, which seeks to abolish the death penalty. Sr. Helen and a few students also met Gov. John Kasich to urge him to place a moratorium on the death penalty while an Ohio Supreme Court task force studies the issue. While in Columbus, a few students offered their perspectives to the press: “It’s important that voters get educated on issues that affect us all,” said Evan Hopper ’13. Senior Evan Fishback has an interest in the psychological impact of prison on humans. “Life without parole, an alternative death penalty opponents propose, has a significant impact on a person’s mental health,” he said. Steven Anderson, also a senior, agreed, “Everybody’s got a point of view… It’s important that young people get involved, because we’ll be the leaders of the country someday.” M
It was that particular passage in Sister Helen Prejean’s book, Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, that touched Art Teacher Jeannette Elliott. “I was reading the book last summer, and when I came across this scene and quote, I was struck by how real and terrifying it must have been at that moment for Pat Sonnier,” she said. “I had my students research a man or woman on death row – in any state – and find out who they were before they committed the crime that put them “It was freshman AJ Hoffman’s in prison. To find out idea to have a day when the painted who the child or young shoes could be worn in school to bring adult part of them we attention to the fact that these men could identify with was and women exist and are alive…and like, and then paint a waiting to die”, said Elliott. scene or details from their “Most of my students told me that life onto a pair of shoes. researching the lives of these death This was to symbolize row inmates made them feel more that these are real people compassionate toward them, as many walking around every had horrific childhoods and some were mentally retarded or severely mentally day knowing they will ill,” said Elliott… “They realize, too, die a horrific death: and that having compassion for the inmate by the hand of another is not meant to (nor does it) negate human being… The the pain and horror the victims message is hypocritical, suffered – or the sufferings that the and the action irreversible. victims’ families are going through now. Her rhetorical question highlighted Sr. Helen’s pending crusade: to gather the next day outside the Lucasville prison to protest the execution of Reginald Brooks who was convicted of killing his three sons in 1982 as they slept in their East Cleveland home.
Sr. Helen then talked about the Gospel education she received while working in the St. Thomas projects of New Orleans. While there she was asked to become a pen pal to a man in prison. “I thought, ‘I can do that. I’m an English major,’ ” she said. “But sometimes God is sneaky… They killed that man – and he was looking at me when he died. My life was changed forever.”

“What is happening in Ohio?” said Sister Helen Prejean to the audience who packed the Brisben Gym that dreary evening on November 14th as the rain drops drummed on the metal tin roof. “Where is Christ in this?”

HONOR ROLL of Donors July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2011 There are many ways to become involved and give back to Moeller High School. During the past year numerous parents, friends, and alumni volunteered their time, talents, and treasures. These individuals appreciate the value of a Moeller education and realize the impact of their gifts. Private giving unquestionably provides the margin of excellence between good and great. As you read this issue of the Moeller Magazine, we hope that you, too, will enhance that margin and encourage others to support Moeller as well.

Alumnus Dan Leugers ’77 (above photo on left with Service Director Brain Gilronan)) initiated the Moeller Food Drive about 15 years ago. “It started small with a unique idea: Fill a box with enough food to feed a family of four for two days,” he said. “The first Food Drive raised only 65 boxes. Last year the Moeller Family raised 1000 boxes of food (which was a new record)!” The boxes went to St. Vincent de Paul and the St. George Food Pantry.

Class of 2011 Breaks Record for Annual Fund Participation A record-breaking 72.77% of the Class of 2011 gave to Moeller’s Annual Fund this year to support the Josh Pflum ’11 Scholarship Fund, and more than 90% of the class members pledged a five-year commitment. Their classmate passed away last September in a tragic accident. To honor Josh, the class established this scholarship. “That is an inspiring level of generosity from our newest class of grads,” said President Bill Hunt. “As you know, the gift of a Moeller education significantly changes lives. And no gift is too small.” Using the Class of 2011 as their inspiration, the Moeller Alumni Board has established a named scholarship program for each of the classes, encouraging all Moeller alumni to give to the Annual Fund in support of their class’s named scholarship program. For more information about how you can support your class’s scholarship, contact Advancement Director Debbie Geiger at (513) 791-1680, ext. 1320, or email her at DGeiger@Moeller.org.

The 2010-11 Moeller Annual Fund Drive
Report of Revenue and Expenses
Thanks to your generosity, we did it! Last year we raised more than one million dollars, and we couldn’t be more grateful!
(Forecast, as of July 1, 2011, for 2011-12 Fiscal Year)
YOU make a real difference in the lives and education of our current and future Men of Moeller. Tuition covers only 81% of the cost to educate a student at Moeller, so the Annual Fund helps bridge the gap of $2,495 per student! The Annual Fund supports academic program enrichment, technology advancements, service opportunities, tuition assistance, and co-curricular activities. Participation is most important, and supporting the fund every year makes a difference daily at Moeller, from morning prayer until the lights turn off in the gym at night. This year our goal is $1.25M, and we know that with your help we can continue to grow the “Moeller Winning Tradition.”

New Timeline Exhibit tells the ‘Truth’ about
THE MOELLER STORY On October 14, 2009, the newly formed Communications Committee gathered together at 7 AM in the Pastoral Ministry Conference Room. Their goal was to create a communications plan to commemorate and promote Moeller’s upcoming 50th Anniversary. As the group brainstormed together – a 50th website, a Facebook page, a DVD, a book, a blog, W-MOE alumni podcasts, and more – Louise Hoelker, head of PR for Shriners Hospitals for Children, suggested an exhibit. The hospital had just celebrated its 40th anniversary, and they had commissioned a large-scale timeline consisting of patient profiles and documenting the work of the pediatric burn hospital. The hospital worked with Graff Designs, a local graphic and environmental design firm who had worked on such exhibits at The Ohio State University and the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. “At the time, I knew that the group Graff Designs was exactly what Moeller needed to showcase its history. Their work is creative, original, and produces dramatic results.” Two years later that suggestion became a reality and the capstone of Moeller’s 50th Anniversary activities. Advancement Director Debbie Geiger secured funding from two generous Moeller benefactors – Curt & Linda Curran (photo right) and Ted ’79 & Becky Catino (photo bottom right) – and Moeller commissioned the same graphic artists that Shriners had used so successfully: Graff Designs. The goal was to create a similar permanent exhibit for display in the main hallway of the school celebrating the many successes of Moeller as a high school in the Marianist tradition, instilling pride in Moeller’s past, and vibrantly promoting Moeller’s future. Originally this exhibit was proposed as a timeline encompassing the history of Archbishop Moeller from its inception in 1960 to 2010. However, as the Graff Designs team began researching the project through a variety of Moeller publications, meetings, and respondent surveys, they began to envision the project in a larger sense.

“The facts alone do not tell the Moeller truth,” said Daniel Graff in his conceptual design presentation to a newly formed steering committee. “A timeline of dates and events do not capture the spirit of what makes the Moeller experience so special – almost sacred – to the students, families, alumni, Marianists, administrators, and faculty who built one of the nation’s premier Catholic high schools.”
DESIGN CONCEPT “To tell the Moeller truth – ‘The Moeller Story’ – we propose an exhibit to celebrate 50 years of transforming the Men of Moeller from high school students to men of faith, men of knowledge and accomplishment, men of family, men of service, men who are charged as leaders, educators, athletes, artists, musicians, businessmen, and more,” said Graff. “Through the Marianist Charism, the Men of Moeller are transformed into ‘Men for the World.’ ”
The Vision The Graff Designs team then described their vision: “The display will visually and textually explore how the Moeller experience uniquely molds and challenges young men to aspire to greatness – in many varying interpretations of the world. Rather than being solely a reflection of the past, this exhibit will view Moeller’s history as a determinant of the Blane Collison, Principal school’s vibrant present and promising future. It will serve as a permanent, prominent, and inspiring testament to Moeller High School’s many communities – most importantly, the current generation of Men of Moeller.”
“Not Just Men of
the World, But Men for the World.”
The Message The Graff Designs team decided to use the five Characteristics of a Marianist Education as the primary organizing structure of the exhibit. “Each Characteristic will be represented as a microcosm of the Moeller experience,” said Graff. “The background will include a montage of iconic Moeller images that reflect that specific characteristic. Layered over the background will be panels that include text blocks, mini-timelines, photo montages, then-and-now vignettes, honorary bios, and other features.”
The Truth “We believe this approach most ‘truthfully’ conveys the essence of Moeller’s first 50 years of existence,” Graff continued. “However, in view of Moeller’s incredibly successful athletic programs – and their fervent supports – it is important to note that this creative treatment was intended to promote the achievement of Moeller High School as a whole. Athletic accomplishments, while incorporated as an important facet of the Marianist Characteristics, are not singled out or highlighted.
Moeller thanked the generous benefactors of the Timeline – Linda and Curt Curran (top) and Becky and Ted Catino ’79 – with a commemorative collage.

For example, the panel on ‘Educating for Faith Formation’ may include a photo of a Faust-era football team praying around the Our Lady of Moeller statue with a brief vignette by a student who tells how faith is incorporated into all aspects of Moeller life.”
Unifying Theme The Graff Designs team had one more vision to convey as they unveiled the most important design element. “As a unifying theme that flows throughout the panels, there will be hundreds of affirmative statements by the current students and alumni that ends with ‘I am a Man of Moeller,’ explained Mikki Graff, graphic designer of the exhibit. “This will stand for decades to come as the definitive statement of what it means to be a Man of Moeller.”
Mass Dedication & Blessing On Thursday, September 29, “The Moeller Story” exhibit was officially unveiled and blessed as part of an all-school Mass. “On the day of the blessing and dedication I had the pleasure to personally view the Timeline side by side with Gerry Faust and Phil Gigliotti,” said Advancement Director Debbie Geiger. “That brought even more meaning for me to hear them respond to the pictures and the memories of the exhibit. After hearing that they were pleased and impressed with the exhibit, I knew we did a good job of telling ‘The Moeller Story.’ ”
Perspectives “The Timeline project was a reflection of the devotion many people have for Moeller High School,” said alumnus and exhibit benefactor Ted Catino ’79. “The commitment and dedication put forth by all those involved is
inspirational. Becky and I appreciated having the opportunity to be a small part in a great project for a wonderful organization.” Exhibit benefactors Curt and Linda Curran agreed. “It is an honor to be a part of the Moeller Family,” they said. “Our prayer is that the Timeline will inspire the young Men of Moeller to appreciate the past, acknowledge the present, and embrace the future of this wonderful institution.” “When Graff Designs began the project, we were somewhat familiar with Moeller,” said Daniel Graff. “We knew it was a Catholic high school with a strong sense of pride and tradition. We were familiar with the theater program there as well as its strong athletic program. The most significant aspect about Moeller that we learned from doing this project is the sense of family and community that the school nurtures. We hadn’t been in the project more than a week or two when we started thinking of Graff Designs as part of that family, too. We were – and still are – in awe of the people who give of themselves to make Moeller High School an amazing place. And not just for the four years that they are a student or a parent of a student at the school – but for 20, 30, and 40 years.” Mikki Graff added, “Part of the project included gathering ‘I am a Man of Moeller” statements from students and alumni who shared how Moeller had changed their lives,” she said. “We knew it was going to be a powerful message, but when I read the hundreds of responses coming into the Graff Designs office, they brought tears to my eyes. I hope that the teachers, parents, coaches, administrators, and volunteers realize that they have made a meaningful difference in so many lives.” M
Exhibit Content After several months of research, in July 2011 the Graff Designs team presented their content proposal to the committee. “We have developed this content using the surveys, magazines, and other provided source material,” explained Mikki Graff. “Obviously, space constraints keep us from including the hundreds of people who have ‘built’ Moeller.” To assist with this part of the process, the Moeller steering committee enlisted a few school “experts” who had lived and experienced much of Moeller’s history and who could provide a fair perspective: Barry Borman ’64 (one of the 196 original freshmen in 1960 – and who returned in 1969 to teach), Bill Braun ’72 (returned to teach in 1977), and Carl Kremer (began his tenure in 1984). Together, they worked with President Bill Hunt and others to whittle through the choices the Graffs presented. “We knew from the beginning that this would be the most difficult part,” said Hunt. “Even though it’s a sizable exhibit, to condense the incredibly rich history into the space we did have was a real challenge. At several points I stood back and reveled in peoples’ remembrances of times, places, incidents, etc. that have shaped this remarkable school. And, as usual, most of the memories centered around people, their powerful stories, and the building of the Moeller Family.”
Legendary Coaches Gerry Faust and Phil Gigliotti point to Moeller’s founding principal, Brother Lawrence Eveslage, also known to them as the “Big E.”

Brief Honorary Biographies “Although coming up with the first honorary biographies was difficult in many ways,” said Geiger, “we also knew that we would be able to update these every year. There are so many people who deserve to be represented under each of the five Characteristics of a Marianist Education. Our goal this year is to create a process so that each fall we can honor and recognize five new individuals and continually update the honorary bio panels.”

From Pitcher to Producer… But Always a “Man of Moeller” By Mary Fischer, Development Associate
When Eric Fischer graduated from Moeller in 1998, he was certain that a career in baseball was his ultimate goal. He had a choice “Coach Cameron taught me and was faced with a good discipline, hard work and opportunity with winning,” said Fischer. the Chicago “It’s not just good enough White Sox. For many to put on a uniform. You 18-year-old have to know how to win.” graduates, this path is not always so clear and certainly not always obtainable. Besides the obvious talent, Eric grew and matured as an athlete at Moeller. “Coach Cameron taught me discipline, hard work and winning,” said Fischer. “It’s not just good enough to put on a uniform. You have to know how to win. A good teacher or coach knows how to get you to perform at your highest level. Losing builds character, but knowing and expecting how to win leads to success.”
terrible event transpired exactly 100 years prior. While working in Cincinnati, Fischer visited Moeller and sought out a current Moeller Crusader who might be interested in helping on the movie set with production work and experiencing a movie production first-hand. He wanted a student who was passionate about this type of work and who would benefit from this very valuable experience. Current senior Tim Valentine was the obvious choice. Tim’s Moeller rally videos are renowned throughout the school, and many clips have been featured on the Moeller website (www.Moeller.org).*
“Moeller prepared me to go to work in the job force,” said Fischer. “It’s different going directly into college after high school. I was thrown right into professional sports. That’s a job. And Moeller prepared me to do it well.”
While on vacation in North Carolina, Valentine received a call from Eric inviting him to participate as an on-set intern production assistant. “At the time, I had no clue what I was getting myself into,” says Valentine. “I was able to shadow different people each day and pick up techniques and skills needed for that particular job. While on the set I had a discussion with the writer of the movie, Kevin Carraway, on the process of writing a movie. It was great!”
Fast-forward to July 2011: Eric Fischer is now an accomplished actor, writer, and movie producer. He and his wife, Brianna Lee Johnson, have paired together in their career and in life. They visited Cincinnati to begin work on their latest project, Seven Below, an indie thriller starring Val Kilmer. The story centers on a group of strangers trapped in a time warp house where a
Tim worked for two months, showing up six days a week, 12 hours a day, observing and learning all the different pieces that make up a film. “I walked away after two
Fischer spent eight years as a professional pitcher with the Chicago White Sox followed by the Minnesota Twins. Although he did some acting locally as a child in Cincinnati, it was when he left baseball in 2007, moved to L.A., finished his degree at Cal State University, and created eFish Entertainment, that he began a whole new career path.
months having learned many camera techniques, different lighting skills, the writing process, and editing work that takes place in making a film. The experience was life changing and has helped me in my quest of gaining a better understanding of the process of how a film is created. I am very grateful to Eric Fischer.” Fischer has been delighted with the experience and the opportunity to help out a fellow Moeller student. He visited two classrooms and spoke to some aspiring videography students regarding his own personal story. “Tim really knocked it out the park,” commented Fischer. “If this is an inclination of what Moeller is breeding in students, they are in very good shape. Moeller students should be very proud of whatever uniform they are wearing, class they are studying, and the diploma they are receiving. They should be very proud.” When asked if Fischer had any advice for the current student body or future “Men of Moeller,” he simply stated, “If the door is closed in front of you, don’t push it open – take it off its hinges!”
Tim Valentine *Ti m ’s m o s t r e c e n t v i d e o p r o d u c t i o n – a n d one of his most popular to date – features a clever music promo for the annual Canned Food Drive. He created this clip with senior Jake Alexander, and it’s available on YouTube.
“Ever since I took the video production class at Moeller my sophomore year I have been interested in film,” said Tim Valentine. “I have been on the set of the movie Seven Below, worked for the company Videograyphics, and created my own short movie clips with Jake Alexander for Moeller. Using my talents to help others allows me to have fun and help out the Moeller community. I plan on studying film in college, and I dream of someday being on the set of my own movie.” FALL/WINTER 2011 • 32

Mike Ward ’86: Adventure at Sea
Moeller extends its best wishes to the following graduates and faculty who have/will “tie the knot”:
By Mary Fischer, Development Associate
Mike Ward ’86 still walks the halls of Moeller High School. In his 20th year of teaching, he is a recognizable figure whose passion for teaching the Men of Moeller has never diminished. Many a graduate enters their college career a better student for his influence on them in science and math. But there is another activity that he enjoys almost as much as teaching…sailing. This past July, Mike and Tim Erdmann, a fellow Moeller science teacher, along with two other sailors departed southern Virginia for a 680-mile Atlantic crossing to Bermuda. Their vessel was Mike’s 1977 Westsail 32 cutter, the Seahawk. While onboard the six-plus days excursion, they were able to observe flying fish, a pod of dolphins playing in the bow wave, and “unbelievable sunrises, sunsets, and stars!” Upon arrival, the four couples enjoyed experiencing island life, eating out, and swimming “on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world,” Mike said. “We also attended Sunday morning service at the oldest African-American church on the island. What an experience!” On the night before his return voyage, Mike’s adventure began to foreshadow rougher waves ahead. “I had a major accident with the boat’s wind generator—a large windmill that generates electricity for the boat,” he explained. “I was taken to the
hospital by a wonderful local family and, after a night in the ER, had surgery on my scalp. My fiancée Heidi extended her trip to help me recover, and we were truly amazed and humbled at the hospitality, friendliness, and concern of the locals.” Undaunted, Mike soon prepared for the voyage home. “My goal and dream was to make a single-hand passage,” he said. For the first two days the winds were fickle, and then a storm began to brew. “I spent the next 36 hours changing sails, tending to mechanical issues, fixing broken equipment, navigating, etc. all while trying to maintain my sleeping and eating patterns,” he said. “That 36-hour span was one of the most challenging periods of my life. Towards the end of the storm I was experiencing 20-30 knot winds with wave heights approaching 15 feet. I felt the power of those at home praying for me as I had to frequently dig down into my reserves to get things done.” “In summary,” he said, “the trip was one of the most beautiful, awesome, and challenging experiences I have ever had. I feel that I have grown tremendously through the adversities I faced. What’s more, I will always be able to say that I crossed an ocean on my own boat.”
Burbrink, Rick ’66 retired from the United States Post Office after 37 years in management. He is now employed with ICF as an analyst/engineer. He and his wife, Pam, have five grandchildren. Monahan, John ’66 recently retired from service with the Amberly Village Police Department after 37 1/2 years, the last 18 as police and fire chief. He and his wife, Donna, have three children and nine grandchildren with one on the way. John currently is an appraiser and realtor. Monahan, Pat ’66 has been involved as a board member of Community Chest and the village mayor of Shawnee Hills, OH, for the last four years. He is happily married to his wife, Julia, since 2004. They met as army veterans marching in a Memorial Day parade. Pat’s children are grown, and he has 13 grandchildren. He served in the US Army as a staff sergeant in Vietnam.
O’Connor, John ’66 has been self-employed for nearly 40 years, providing security for Archbishop Moeller High School for 29 years. His wife, Diane, has worked for American Airlines for 25 years. His son, Tony, runs cross country and track for Lakota East and his daughter, Tiffany, holds a 3.8 GPA. John has six grandchildren and loves to travel. Rivers, Dan ’66 retired in 2003 from teaching history, American government, and economics for the Cincinnati Public Schools. He currently works as a volunteer at the Edgar Cayce Foundation in Virginia Beach where he writes dream analysis and interpretation for clients and frequently gives talks on the subject. Dan enjoys flying after earning his private pilot’s license in 1995. Snell, Jim ’66 is a Vietnam era veteran serving in the Air Force 1967-71. He has been married 38 plus years to his wife, Pam. They have one daughter, Erin, and one grandson, with a second grandchild born in October 2011.
Moeller Expands its Alumni Network to Washington, D.C. Moeller is expanding its alumni network by beginning the process to open a new chapter in Washington, D.C. Kevin Kimener ’98, one of the organizers of this initiative, explains why. "With Moeller alumni having forged great strides in the business, political, philanthropic, and academic communities, developing these local chapters nationwide will help spread awareness of Moeller’s
mission and impact,” he said. “It will also expand support for select initiatives, exploring the alumni's ability to influence their communities, and increase networking and leadership opportunities. We are only limited by our imagination.” After meeting with the Speaker of the House John Boehner ’68 at his office on Capitol Hill, the chapter organizers – Kevin, along with President Bill Hunt, Bro. Ron Luksic, and Erik Traynham ’98 – hosted a small alumni gathering at The Army & Navy Club (photo left). President Bill Hunt and Bro. Ron Luksic, S.M., recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to begin developing a new alumni chapter. Pictured, from left: Erik Traynham ’98, Bill Hunt, John Boehner ’68, Kevin Kimener ’98, Bro.
