Moeller, Bacon set for collision /15-

The Cincinnati Enquirer , '.:jc.5 Since a 3-2 loss to Roger Bacon on Sept. 26, MoeUer's soccer team has yearned for another shot at the · Spartans. The Crusaders will get that opportunity on Saturday in the Division I, Cincinnati II district championship. Both teams advanced Tuesday: Moeller downed Fairfield, 5-0, while Roger Bacon bested Lakota, 3-0. . Ben Necessary led the Moeller offense with two goals while Jim Frondorf, Robie Lymangrover and Jason Gerwel also scored. _"In the first game, Roger Bacon took a 2-0 lead, but we tied it in the second half," Moeller coach Randy Hurley said. "They scored with 17 minutes remaining." Goals by Andy Bello, Ben Williams and Brian Feldhaus lifted Roger Bacon, but coach Dick Arszman wasn't elated about playing MoeUer a second time. · "This is reminiscent of when we piayed each team in the league twice,'' Arszman said; "We know going in that they will come back much harder against us on Saturday since we won the first time."

It's been a tough sell for coach Randy Berning and the McNicholas boys soccer team. Although the Rockets turned a few heads with an impressive victory over previously undefeated Moeller last week, many coaches aren't convinced that the 6-0 Rockets are one of Cincinnati's better teams. The Rockets have an excellent opportunity to silence the critics Tuesday, traveling to Dayton for a game against powerful Kettering Alter, a Division II state finalist in 1994. "We beat them 5-l down here last year," Berning said: "You know · that they will be out for blood." The once-beaten Knights beat St. Xavier, 4-0, on Saturday, setting the stage for the confrontation with McNicholas. · "This is a big league game for both schools although we have the advantage after beating Moeller," Berning said. "We have never won a GCL soccer championship and that's one of our goals. We missed by half a game last year."

HIGH"'· SCHOOL

Moeller alive and kicking again in 1995.

By Michael J. Schmaltz Press Contributor

Defense, experience and strong team character have led the Moeller soccer team to a 9-21 start to the 199 5 season. The Crusaders seem to have picked up where they left off last season after finishing 18-1-1 and winning Greater Catholic League, city and district championships. Moeller earned a Division I regional semifinal berth before their run to the 1994 the state title was halted with a 2-0 loss to Centerville. The experienced Crusaders return seven starters, 11 seniors and a total of 14 lettermen to head coach Randy Hurley's roster. . Hurley, in his eighth season at the Moeller helm, said that senior experience has helped build a strong team character which has led to his program's recent success. "The kids have built this into a top program," he said. "They expect more out of themselves, have a good work ethic and take a lot of pride in representing the school. It's difficult to teach that," Hurley said. If defense wins championships, Moeller should be considered a top candidate to finish in the upper echelons of. the state

defender in the city." . Lymangrover often handles the opposing team's top scorer and contributes to offensive transition with solid passing skills. "Roby serves as our 'manmarker' and is assigned to the other team's top striker," Hurley said. "He's also dangerous on offense because of his good services {passes). He's really a nice player and our unsung hero." Moeller's other offensive threats are leading scorers Greg Rue busch and Jim Frondorf. Ruebusch is the school's alltime goal scorer with 41 career goals and also holds the school record for all-time points. He has struck for nine goals and added four assists through nine games this season. "Technically Greg is very gifted, he has great touch on the ball, an explosive first step and, weighing 185 pounds, he's tough to knock off the ball," Hurley said. "He's a scoring threat from either side of the field." Frondorf, the team's secondleading scorer, is making a smooth transition from midfielder to striker. "We've changed Jim's role this season and he's played into some unlucky scoring situations," Hurley said. "We look for jim to _ have a better second half of the· -· season because he's difficult to~ ·., "

Freshman leads Bacon's u1 Rowe scores two in first varsity start Post staff report

With its top scorer, Brian Feldhaus, out because of disciplinary reasons, Roger Bacon got two goals from his replacement, freshman J.P. Rowe, in a 3-2 upset of Moeller, the topranked Division I team in the Southwest Ohio Soccer Coaches Association poll. Rowe, who had five guals entering the game even though he had never started, broke a 2-2 tie with 16:31left in the game. Rowe came around the left side of the field and put in a 15-yard shot from a seemingly impossible angle. "I didn't think he had any angle on that shot but he bent it around nice," Roger Bacon coach Dick Arszman said. "It was a bit of a surprise." Moeller had tied the score with 21:59 to play when Greg Ruebesch scored on a penalty kick. The Spartans, ranked No.6 in the Division I poll, jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Rowe and Adam Wiggershaus each scored in the first four minutes. Moeller got its first goal with just 19 seconds left in the half. It gave the Crusaders a momentary swing of momentum. "It was like hitting a buzzer shot at halftime - it pumps you up," Arszman said. "I was a little concerned by that. I told the DOUG COCHRAN/for The Cincinnati Post team we need to equal that and Moments after Roger Bacon's 3-2 upset of Moeller at Blue Ash Sports they did." Center, the Spartan players jump into their victory celebration. The win was the sixth straight for Roger Bacon which started the season 1-2-1. HALFTIME: Roger Bacon, 2-1. even starters, led by super seniors Adam Lux, Greg Ruebusch and Matt Bourgraf, make Moeller the clear No. 1 team in The Post's poll of Ohio boys' high school soccer in this area. Lux, a goaltender who recorded nine shutouts last season, has a school-record 15 shutouts in his varsity career. "He is so smart and :-eads the game so well," Moeller coach Randy Hurley said of Lux. Ruebusch, a midfielder-striker who has started every game for Moeller since his freshman year, scored 12 goals last season and has 32 for his career. Moeller, the No. 1-ranked team in The Post's city coaches' poll, tied 1-1 with Beavercreek, a traditional power in Dayton. Moeller outshot Beavercreek, 15-7, and had several good scoring opportunities in the second half, but couldn't break a 1-1 halftime tie. After Beavercreek scored with 11 minutes left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead, Moeller senior mid· fielder Greg Ruebusch scored with 42 seconds left in the half. Moeller's Bonham heads for Europe More than a few eyebrows were raised when Brendan Bonham made the decision to leave the Moeller High School soccer team. After all, he was walking away from a starting spot with the No. 1 team in the city, a squad which looked to be just as good this season as it was last year when it made it to the Division I regional semifinals. But Bonham, 16, is realizing his dream of playing European soccer. He's playing with the Burnley Football Club in England, where he has a spot on the team's junior apprentice squad. 'This was a very hard decision for Brendan to make, but he knew that if he didn't do it now he would never get the chance," said his father, Mitch. Brendan Bonham Bonham is attending school in Burnley, and is beginning practice with his team, which is two steps below the Division I squad. The apprentice squad is much like a minor league team in professional baseball. After two years on the apprentice squad, he might get a pro-

motion to play on the top team. g .... IS ~ '1 ~ "It's a long shot, but it was a long shot for Brendan to even make it on the apprentice team," Mitch Bonham said. 'There are only a few Americans who have ever done this, and certainly the odds are against him." The Bonham family, which lives in Mason, spent nine months arranging for Brendan to attend school in England. He had a tryout with the Burnley coaches, who were impressed enough to offer him an unpaid spot on the team. "He will certainly have the chance to hone his skills over there," Mitch Bonham said. "He might earn a promotion to the top team, or he even has the opportunity to come back to the U.S. and play college and professional here. Either way I think he wins." Bonham left six weeks ago to fulfill his dream, and his former Moeller teammates say they are rooting for him to succeed. "At first we didn't know if he was serious about doing this," said striker Greg Ruebusch. "But when he left, we all wished him the best. We are going to miss him, both on the field and as a friend." -Tim Pennington
