A showdown between Lakota East and Moeller Wednesday night developed from a scoreless tic to The Paul Sparke Show in a matter of minutes. The Moeller senior defender scored both of his team's goals in a 2-1 victory in West Chester. "Vi'hen you play defense, you hardly ever get to shoot. So when you shoot, you have to make it count," Sparke said. The win lifted the Crusaders to 1-1. "Any time you get a victory over a well-coached team like Lakota East, that has e:ll.tra significance," coach Randy Hurley said. After lightning delayed the start of the game, Hurley - in his 16th season at Moeller- saw his team pepper Lakota East goalkeeper Byron Neal with several shots in the game's first eight minutes. Nick Kinder's attempt to set up Ryan Lustig presented an early Thunderhawks threat The game was stopped briefly after a collision involving Neal and Crusaders sophomore Alex Allison with 15:46 remaining in the first half. Neal was not injured, and Allison left the field under his own
power and later returned. Moeller again went on the attack in the final minutes of the half. Tony Capurro was tripped up during a charge, ensuring a 0-0 halftime score. Kinder caught Crusaders goalkeeper Brian Schu:.nacher out of position with 23 minutes left, but Sparke made an outstanding stop to prevent a score. "I think saving that goal sort of pumped me up and got me into the game," Sparke added. Sparke broke the scoreless tie with 17 minutes remaining. His free kick rebounded off a Lakota East defender back to him, and Sparke launched a long-distance shot over Neal to provide a 1-0 Moeller lead. The Thunderhawks' effort to equalize was thwarted until Bacon took advantage of a possession change to charge through Moeller's defense untouched with just 4:55 remaining and tie the game. Sparke then found himself in the right place at the right time on a header off a rebound in the game's waning moments. "On the second one, it was luck. But they gave it up,'" Sparke said. ~~l

When the summer hegins tD fade into the fall season is when Sparke and Capurro turn their att~o:ntion to Moeller varsity soccer. The duo still remains loyal to Modkr and their goal of winning a state championship. "Our expectations are always to challenge for a cnn. krence championship and to be considered one of the top programs in the city," said head coach Randy Hurley, who is in his 16th season at the helm. Hurley feels that the other, more inexperienced players rally around his two talt·••lt:d seniors. due to their hard work every day. With the speed and compl·titivencss of varsity soccer. the newcomers could struggle adju~ting to the pace. However. Spark.c und Capurro will be there every step of the way, teaching them how to become great. ''When I'm on the field they look at me and they sec how 1 act during a certain situation. then they're going to obviously act the same way," Sparke
said. Accomplishing the feat of getting to state and becoming champions of the GCL will not be an easy task for the underclassmen or the two senior leaders. "If we look at the big picture and not look at what the short-term results are. than we will be fine at the end of the season," Hurly said.
