The Moeller Crusaders swim team took control at the sectional meet and cruised into districts. Star junior Matt Angelini dominated his events, placing third in the 100 backstroke and second in the 200 individual medley. Angelini should compete for a state berth in those ~ents this year and definitely next year as well. Alongside Angelini, freshman Brian Howell advanced in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle events and sophomore Rob Conners made it through to districts in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Moeller completed the competition by moving on in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Boys' swimming preview

St. Xavier still the best Turpin will be Bombers' main area challenge

By Alex Blumer Enquirer contributor

With six consecutive state swimming titles and 26 overall since 1970, St Xavier being picked as the top area team is about as sure a thing as there is in local high school sports. The Bombers might be more vulnerable at the state level· this season, though, with only six returning state qualifiers. , "We're shooting for seven (straight state titles), but it'll befbarder this year," St Xavier head coach Jim Brower said. '1fs: not what we've had in past years." ' St X still has plenty of talent including Division I-bound semot:s Kit French (Georgia) and Jdred 1 Wagster (Arizona State). St X's David Mosko, who had two top-10 state finishes as a fr~sh man, headlines a good sopho~ore class. The Bombers' toughest lacal competition will be a strongTuil>in squad, led by senior Hank Browning. ' Browning, who's committed to North Carolina, was the state !}Inner-up in the 200 and 500 freestiles and teamed with juniors Kyle Greene and Rob Jackson to give e Spartans state-caliber 200 and .00 free relay teams. ; Turpin also has the area's top;,returning diver in senior Nick Tho'mton (16th at state). 1 _. ·"We hav.e mot'e depth than wl/ve had since I've been here," said ~'Fur pin coach Rene Contino, viMse squad was sixth at state last seasbn. Anderson will be compelitiv~ in the distance events, too, led by Sean Davis (Purdue), who was third at state in the 200 freestyle

Lions again top Division I field But other local foes are closing in, and Braves look tough in Div. II By Alex Blumer Enquirer contribuuir

Ursuline still should be the tek to beat locally in Division I this season, but the rest of the field has edged closer to the lions. The two-time defending state runner-up, Ursuline failed to win districts for only the second time in the last eight y,ears. "I don't think there's one standout team this season," said Anderson coach Ed Bachman. "Everyone will have some good swimmers, but everybody's as weak as they've been." In Division II, Indian Hill, led by UClA-bound Brittany Hill and sophomore Amanda Smith, seeins primed to duplicate last season's state runner-up finish. Hill was the state runner-up in diving and qualified in three swimming events (50 free, 200 free relay and 200 medley relay). Smith was second in the 200 freescyle and

third in the 500. Ursuline's headliner is senior Abby Cooper (Indiana University), who tookthird at state in the 50. and 100-yard freestyles. Junior Sarah Krone teamed with Cooper on the 200 and 400 free relay teams that finished first and third respectively last season. "The depth is definitely there across the board, it just depends on how we develop that depth," said Ursuline coach Tim Beerman. Ursuline also has an excellent trio of divers in juniors ]en Funch (third at state), Aimee Sundberg (lOth) and Mallory Naber (12th). Bachman's Redskins could be the area's most improved team. Anderson sophomore Anita Beck is coming off a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle, and Laura Tomes, Sarah Smith and Katie :Chute give th.e Redskins depth. St. Ursula returns six state quali· fiers, including junior Alex Doyle, from last season's fifth-place squad.
