West freshman Fields makes it to title match Beats ~o district champs on way

COWMBUS - Lakota West coach Scott Fetzer calls freshman wrestler Ryan Fields "a wrestling junkie." Fields will look to cap his impressive weekend with a title at 103 pounds tonight at the Division I state tournament. Fields earned a spot in the finals with a 4-1 semifinal win over Dante Rini of Massillon Jackson Friday night at Ohio State University. Action will continue at 10 a.m. today with the consolation semifinals. The title matches in all three divisions will begin at 5:50 p.m. Fields (3~3) will oppose Youngstown Austintown-Fitch's Tony Jameson (37-3) in the title match. Jameson pinned Moeller's Alex Weaver (3:55) in the other semifinal. "Going out there and being calm," Fields said of keys to winning tonight. "I have to react to what he does. I don't think about the match, I just go out there and do it." Fields defeated district champs Victor Radsky of Thomas Worthington (6-4) and Rini on his way to the title match. "I got here and it felt right, I thought I was going to make it," Fields said. "It felt right coming in." "He lives and breathes it," Fetzer said. "It's 24-7 ... Ryan is all about wrestling. It's great to see a kid who is dedicated to the sport as he is, but it's probably just as satisfying to see the love and passion he has for the sport. He just loves to wrestle and he can't get enough of it." Mason's Zachary Marshall (43-1) earned a spot in the 27~

pound title match with a pin (4:36) of Macedonia Nordonia's Joe Kowalski. Marshall will oppose Ben Kuhar (30-3) of St. Edward for the title. Massillon Perry's Dustin Schlatter continued his pursuit of another state title by pinning Moeller's Dean Gaier (:53) in a semifinal at 145. Schlatter is looking to become the 14th wrestler to win four state titles. Lakota East's Billy Baker reached the semifinals at 130 but was edged by Brunswick's Richie Spice! 5-4. Baker's teammate, Kent Pierson, was pinned by Massillon Jackson's Ben Johnson (4:59) in a semifinal at 125. Sycamore's Victer Crenshaw dropped a 6-4 decision to Hilliard Davidson's Mike Davis in a semifinal at140. DIVISION Ill: Madison's Patrick Lanham will look to cap an illustrious career with a state title. Lanham earned a spot in the championship match with a 13-6 win over Martins Ferry's Clay Tucker, the defending champion at 130. Lanham (49-1), a state qualifier last season, collected his !59th career win. "I've never felt like this in my life," Lanham said. "I've never done anything like this in my life. I don't even know what to do; I don't know whether to celebrate or cry. I've never been to this point." Lanham will oppose McComb's Justin Hill in the title match. Lanham defeated Hill for the Xenia district title last weekend, 9-7. "I knew he didn't have the best of draws, but to beat a returning state champ, I like his chances," Madison coach Ryan McLane said.

Mason's Marshall wins title in dramatic fashion '

COLUMBUS - Mason senior Zachary Marshall earned some sweet redemption Saturday at the Ohio state wrestling championships at Ohio State University. A week after being disqualified from his semifinal match at the Fairfield district competition, Marshall capped the Division I state tournament with a dramatic 7-6 win over Lakewood St. Edward's Ben Kuhar at 275 pounds. Marshall's takedown with two seconds remaining pulled out the state crown, the first by a Mason wrestler. "I did exactly what I practiced," Marshall said. "Snap down and go for his leg. Mter the snap was there, I was able to get around just in time." Marshall wrestled the final two periods with his head bandaged after sustaining a cut late in the first period. "You could see on his face that he was not going to let anything standinhisway,"MasoncoachJerry Schrock said. Senior Patrick Lanham, the alltimevictoriesleaderatMiddletown Madison, earned the program's second state title with a 1-0 win over McComb's Justin Hill in the Division lli championship match at 140 pounds. "l:.astweeklwasworkingtoward a goal of placing, and as it got closer and closer, I finally got realistic that I can actually do this," Lanham said. Greg Gephardt earned Madison's other title, in 1983. Lanham (50.1) scored on a release in the second period for the match's lone point, then controlled Hill (42-2) in the third period. MOELLER WRESTLING UPDATE-Feb. 28th, 2005-02-28 Congratulations to the Moeller wrestling team on their 4th place finish at the State wrestling meet this past weekend. The team tied a record of the 2001 team for most state placers with seven. The top 10 finish is Moeller's 4th in the past 6 years. Placing for the Crusaders were Alex Weaver (4th), Dean Gaier (4th), Charles Quehl (5th), Eric Gobin (5th), Josh Newbanks (7th), Mike Mahon (7th), and Eric Cameron (8th). After advancing a school- and district-record 11 participants to this year's Division I state wrestling tournament at Ohio State University, Moeller coach Jeff Gaier likes his team's chances this weekend. "Going into (state) with the numbers we have, I like the position we are in," Gaier said. "We want to get all of our kids to place, and we feel we are good enough to do that. If we do that, I think we'll finish pretty high in the state rankings." With 13 wrestlers, only Lake. wood St. Edward, the defending Division I state champion, has more participants in Columbus than the Crusaders. Massillon Perry and

Team has 2nd-most wrestlers at state Wadsworth advanced five and four, respectively. "Massillon Perry and Wadsworth have guys projected to win state titles, which will pick them up extra points," Gaier said. 'That means what we have to do is get more kids up on the podium placing."

Preliminaries start today at 5:30p.m.. Action will resume Friday at 11:20 a.m. and the finals will take place Saturday at 5:30p.m. Moeller senior Charles Quehl (215 pounds), juniors Alex Weaver (103) and Eric Cameron (171) and sophomore Dean Gaier (145) won the Fairfield district title in their re-

spective weight classes. Lakota West advanced six wrestlers, including junior Tony Bradberry, the district winner at 135, and Elder qualified five. Lakota East has four qualifiers, including two district champions seniors Kent Pierson (125) and Billy Baker (130). Division III and II preliminaries begin today at 3 p.m. and 4:30p.m., respectively. COWMBUS- Madeira senior wrestler Randy Cloran hopes to reach a pair of milestones at this weekend'sDivisioniiistatetournament at Ohio State University. Cloran moved one win shy of the prestigious 1()().win club Thursday when he beat Burton Berkshire's Joel Jenkins 6-3 in a first-round match at 119 pounds. "I thought he wrestled really well," Madeira coach Bob Kearns said. 'The bottom line is he knows he needs to be aggressive. He has a great shot and he has to use it and not wait until the third period." Cloran (42-3), who took second at the Xenia district, will look for career win 100 today when he opposes Milan Edison's Adam Tmnel in the quarterfinals. Tmnel (38-5) was the champ at the Fostoria district. Action will resume at 10 a.m. today, leading to Saturday night's championship rounds. Cloranismaking his first appearance at the state meet. "It was kind of intimidating at first, but I got used to it," Cloran said of the atmosphere. Theultimatemilestonewouldbe a state title. "I think he can place," Kearns said. "He's really focused. He's worked his tail off. If he gets one more win, he secures 100 in only three seasons." Reading's Derek Mages (33-2) earned a berth in the quarterfinals with a pin of Creston Norwayne's J.D. will oppose Liberty Center's Jeremiah Hill today. Reading's other returning state qualifier, John Bogucki, was decisioned 4-3 by Dustin Nedolast of Fostoria St. Wendelin. Batavia's Jacob Ison (41-1) advanced to today's quarterfinals with a pin of Norfolk St. Paul's Cory Braden in 3:06 at 145. Ison, the district champ at Xenia, will take on Amanda-Clearcreek's Nick Boso in the quarterfinals. Middletown Madison's Patrick Lanham (47-1) advanced with a 9-4 win over Bellaire St. John's Kayne Melko at 140. Lanham will oppose St. Joseph Central Catholic's Anthony Coleman in the quarterfinals. DMSION II: Indian Hill's Zach Reckman ran his record to 33-0 with an impressive pin of Rossford's Mark Vuich in 1:29 at heavyweight. Reckman, the district champ at Goshen, will take on Indian Creek's Maurice Hines in the quarterfinals. Western Brown's Ryan Brownlee was surprised in his first-round match at 135. Brownlee took a 5-0 lead against Watkins Memorial's Brad Tanzillo, but Tanzillo rallied and then pinned Brownlee with six seconds remaining for the upset. Brownlee placed sixth at 135 at last year's state meet. DIVISION 1: Moeller, which qualified 11 wrestlers for the tournament, had six to advance to the quarterfinals. Crusaders' tough schedule paying ofT in tournaments By Mike Dyer Enquirer staff writer

Moeller's challenging regularseason schedule started paying dividends last weekend, according to coach Jeff Gaier. As the Crusaders prepare for. the district tournament at Fairfield, Gaier is confident his team is mentally prepared for close matches. Moeller won a school-record 11 championships last week at Wilmington. Gaier said sophomores Germane Lindsey (130) and Tommy Weinkam (135) have had "tremendous seasons" and may have benefited the most from the tough competition.

"We expect a lot of close matches, and we wanted our kids to be in those situations before they got to this point," Gaier said. "They should know that at this point that they can win the close ones." The Fairfield district begins today at 2:45p.m., and the second round begins at 7 p.m. On Saturday, wrestling resumes at 10 a.m. and the finals begin at 6 p.m. MOELLER RANKED NAnONALLY: Moeller received word this week that it is ranked No. 39 nationally, according to Amateur Wrestling News. LAKOTA WEST, HARRISON WIN SECnONALS: Lakota West won section I at Fairfield, and Harrison won section II. Lakota West won seven individual titles. Firebirds Ryan Fields (103), Alex Flake (130) and Tony Bradberry (135) continued to wrestle well, capturing sectional titles after winning Greater Miami Conference titles. Coach Scott Fetzer believes his 12 district qualifiers have a shot to qualify for state for Lakota West, which has set school records for the number of GMC and sectional champs in one season. "We have trained and prepared them all year for the next two weeks and they are ready," Fetzer said. "Sometimes you worry about

For Harrison, juniors Tyler Adams (112) and Chris Striker (171) and sophomore Rollan Mead (103) won championship matches last week. FRANKLIN SETS NEW STAN· DARD: Franklin won its third sectional title in five seasons, capturing the Division II Eaton sectional. The Wildcats placed 13 of14 wrestlers and had six district qualifiers and set a school record with 152 pins, according to coach Wendel Donathan. The previous mark of 148 pins was set in 2001. FAIRFIElD- La Salle senior Joe Kaake might not even have been born the last time the Lancers had a district wrestling champion. Kaake became the first La Salle wrestler in at least 17 years and perhaps since 1983 to win a district titlewhenheoverwhehnedHamilton junior Josh Steele 11-4 in the championship match of the 119pound weight class at the Fairfield Division I district tournament Saturday night. "It's awesome," Kaake said. "It's what I've worked for all four years." Kaake (34-1) was one of two wrestlers with one loss to win district ~championships. Sycamore senior Victer Crenshaw won the 140-pciund title and improved to 37-1 with a 22-10win over Harrison senior 'Chris Adams. Defending champion Moeller rolled to its second consecutive district championship and qualified 11 wrestlers for the state tournament that is scheduled Thursday through Saturday at Ohio State University's Schottenstein Center. The Crusaders are the first team to win back-to-back championships in the district since Moeller won in 2000 and 2001. "It's special," Moeller coach Jeff Gaier said. "It says you've got a lot of kids coming back and wrestling well at the end of the year, and that's what's important." Harrison senior heavyweight Zachary Marshall also finished with one loss, but he wasn't eligible to wrestle for the championship after being disqualified during his semifinal match Saturday afternoon. Marshall was charged with a violation when he, dropped his opponent, HuberÂˇ Heights Wayne's Lance Wagner, after the whistle had blown to end the first period. When Wagner couldn't continue because of an injury, he was declared the winner, giving Marshall his first loss in 40 matches. Marshall won his consolation match to :finish third. Kaake's district championship is the first in La Salle coach Mike Flaherty's 17 Seasons at the school, the last four as coach.

Kaake was under the impression that it was the school's first since 1983. "It might've been that long," Flaherty said. "I can't remember the last time." If he has an off night, he could end up catching a loss. He needs to be really focused." Sycamore's Crenshaw, who's won 20 in a row and is undefeated at 140 pounds, feels similar pressure. In one of the night's best matches, Princeton's Josh Dowdy overcame an early head butt to his Adam's apple to edge Moeller sophomore Mike Mahon 2-1. Mahon beat Dowdy in last week's Wtlmington sectional championship match. ''I learned he's strong, and you can't beat strength with strength," Dowdy said. ''You have to use technique." DIVISION II: Franklin was the top area finisher at the Goshen district after taking eighth place with 62.5 points. Ross was No.12. Franklin's Adam Sweeney (125) and Justin Blevins (130) qualified for the state meet for the Wildcats. Dylan Ray (145) qualified for Ross. Western Brown sophomore RyanBrownleewonhis135-pound championship match, while Indian Hill's Zach Reckman also took first place, at 275. DIVISION Ill: Second-place Madeira (81 points) was the top area team in the Xenia district. Randy Cloran (119) took second and Kevin Crowley (140) was third. Moeller wrestling coach Jeff Gaier is not taking anything for granted as his team prepares for today's 6 p.m. sectional tournament at Wihnington High School. Despite being the No.4 team in the state ·media poll and the top seed in their sectional, which resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with the finals set for 4 p.m., the Crusaders know anything can happen. "It is important to be sharp, because if you don'tfocus and wrestle well, you could be eliminated," Gaier said. Gaier noted three weight classes in particular - 119, 125 and 130 pounds- that will be anything but a walk in the park. Junior Jared Glaser (119), senior Josh Newbanks (125) and sophomore Germane lindsey (130) will have their hands full with Lakota East seniors Kent Pierson (119), Kody Pierson (125) and Billy Baker (130). The Lakota East trio defeated the three Crusaders in a dual meet at Moeller on Jan. 28. Newbanks, lindsey, senior Charles Quehl (215), junior Alex Weaver (103) and sophomore Dean Gaier (145) are returning state qualifiers and all won their weight classes at the Greater Catholic League tournament last Saturday. Lakota West, ranked sixth in the state, will be the No.2 seed at the Fairfield I sectional (5 p.m. today). After his team won the Greater Miami Conference tournament last Saturday, coach Scott Fetzer hopes it can keep its momentum. "We put a lot of emphasis on the end of the year," Fetzer said. "We remind our kids that everything we have done is for this time of year." Saturday's Fairfield sectionals begin at 10:30 a.m., and the finals are at5p.m.. The Firebirds also return three state qualifiers from last season in senior Brian Almer and juniors Alex Flake and Tony Bradberry. Freshman Ryan Fields (103), Flake (130), Bradberry (135),Almer (171) and senior Ben Reinhardt (275) won their respective weight classes at the GMC tournament.

Division II Western Brown, ranked No. 3 in · the Divisions II-III area coaches' poll, will be the heavy favorite to take home a third consecutive s..:...:tional title this weekend in front of its home crowd. Today's action begins at 6 p.m., while Saturday's rounds are 11 a.m. and5p.m. "We feel pretty confident about our chances this year," Western Brown coach Scott Smith said. "We've prepared for these tournaments by playing a very difficult schedule this season, full of Division I squads." Western Brown sophomore Ryan Brownlee (135) is coming off a sixth-place finish at last year's state tournament The returning sectional champ and defending district runner-up is 27-2. The Broncos have an up-andcoming star in freshman J.J. Ellis (152), who finished the regular season 24-12. Junior Brandon Naylor (160) and seniors Kyle Patrick (145) and Kyle Hollingsworth (140) also have realistic chances of being state qualifiers, according to Smith. Smith said Roger Bacon, ranked sixth in the Enquirer poll, will pose the biggest threat to the Broncos' three-peat hopes. The Spartans, however, will be without five starters due to injury and academics. "(Western Brown) is going to be tough to beat," Roger Bacon coach Brennan Ryan said. Roger Bacon, coming off its first GCL North title, is led by defending sectional champion junior David Harris (1l2) and senior Steve Brunsman (150). Ross, No. 1 in the Enquirer poll, competes at the Eaton sectional.

Division Ill Three of the top 10 teams in the Enquirer poll will compete in the Madeira sectional beginning at 5:30p.m. today. Second-ranked Madeira, fourth-ranked Middletown Madison and fifth-ranked Reading, along with Batavia, headline the 21-team field. Saturday's session begins at 1:30 p.m. with the finals set for 7p.m.

Moeller Wrestling Update 1-30-05 The Varsity wrestlers successfully completed a challenging month highlighted by a match this past Saturday in Cleveland vs. Blair Academy NJ, ranked#1 in the nation. The Crusaders battled to a25-10 lead before dropping the dual39-25. Moeller posted six individual wins including pins by Charles Quehl and Frank Becker. Other wins by Mike Mahon, Nate Kmetz, Eric Cameron and Alex Weaver. Blair later defeated St. Edwards 27-23 to seal up this year's national title. In the second match, Moeller dominated Bergen Catholic, NJ, 52-10, winning 11 of 14 individual matches. Winners for the Crusaders were Mike Mahon, Nate Kmetz, Kyle Jones, Charles Quehl, Frank Becker, Alex Weaver, Jared Glaser, Josh Newbanks, Germane Lindsey, Tommy Weinkam, and Matt Hammer.

This past Friday, the Crusaders crushed Lakota East 55-9. Winners were Alex Weaver, Eric Gobin, Tommy Weinkam, Matt Hammer, Dean Gaier, Mike Mahon, Nate Kmetz, Eric Cameron, Kyle Jones, Ross Quehl, and Frank Becker. N defeated Lakota 42-24. Freshman won 39-16. The Crusaders ended their dual meet season with a 12-2 record. Next up is the GCL tournament at Moeller. The Varsity 'B' team won the Kings Invitational putting seven wrestlers into the finals and producing three champions: Tim Mauntel, Joe Otmar, and Ross Quehl. Placing second were Adam Wallander, Matt Melink, Dan Leshney, and Andrew Brietenbach. Jack Yowler and Will Korst took 3rd. Jeremy Siderits placed 4th.

Moeller coach Jeff Gaier is looking forward to his Crusaders' trip to northeast 0 hio this weekend. After this afternoon's 5 p.m. match at lakota East, Moeller will travel to a Saturday event at lakewood St Edward where the Crusaders will compete in a tri-meet against Bergen Catholic (NJ.) and Blair Academy (NJ.), widely considered the No.1 team in the country. "We are excited about wrestling Blair," Gaier said. "It is not too often you get a chance to wrestle the top · team in the country. It will give our guys a gauge on where they stand with the best" Moeller was second, behind Massillon Peny, at the Mayfield Precision Big 8 tournament Seniors Josh Newbanks (125 pounds) and Nate Kmetz (160) won titles, while freshman Eric Gobin (112), junior Eric Cameron (171) and senior Charles Quehl (215) were runnersuo.

INTRIGUING MATCHUP: No. 2l.akota West is at No.3 Harrison tonight in what appears to be one of the better dual meets this season. Moeller Wrestling Update 1-28-05 The Crusaders rewarded their seniors on senior night with a 58-3 victory for the 12th consecutive win over St. Xavier. In what was the most lopsided win in the history of the series, the Crusaders won 13 of 14 matches to up their dual meet record to 10-1. In the marquee matches, Tommy Weinkam, Mike Mahon, Nate Kmetz, and Eric Cameron were victorious. Pin winners were Charles Quehf, Alex Weaver, Eric Gobin, Josh Newbanks, and Dean Gaier. Moeller Wrestling Update- January 24, 2005 Crusaders just short of Big 8 title: The Varsity wrestlers continued to compete at a high level finishing 2nd in the Mayfield Big 8, fifteen points behind nationally ranked Massillon Perry (#13). Winning individual titles were seniors Josh Newbanks and Nate Kmetz. Newbanks knocked off a two-time state champion from Chanel in the finals. Kmetz leads the team with 25 wins. Subject: Wrestlers sweep Princeton

Congratulations to the Wrestling team who dumped Princeton on all three levels. The Freshman started off with a 36-12 victory. Winners for Moeller were Vinnie Benedetti, Marty Behm, Steve MacVeigh, Joe Otmar, Ryan Folan, Joe Paul, and Ross Quehl. The freshmen compete in the Roger Bacon Duals this Saturday. The JV defeated Princeton 37-28. Winners for the Crusaders were Stephen Lane, Colin Colletti, Matt Hammer, JackYowler, Dan Leshney, Sam Emig, and Trey Hollmeyer. The JV will be at the Purcell Reserve Tournament this Friday and Saturday. The Varsity continued their dominance of Cincinnati area schools with a 57-6 victory over Princeton. The Crusaders won 12 of 14 matches. Moeller was sparked at the top and bottom of the lineups with freshman Matt Melink getting his first varsity victory with a pin at 103. Senior Will Korst filled in for injured heavyweight Frank Becker with a 7-4 win at 275. Other winners were: Jared Glaser, Josh Newbanks, Germane Lindsey, Cebastian Hilton, Dean Gaier, Mike Mahon, Eric Cameron, Kyle Jones, and Charles Quehl. Complete match results are below. The Varsity travels to Mayfield this Saturday for the Mayfield Big 8 Tournament. Four of the top five teams in Division 1 will be at this tournament (Massillon Perry, Wadsworth, Moeller, and Mayfield). Moeller Wrestling Update- January 17. 2005 MOELLER DOMINATES THE CIT! The Varsity wrestlers dominated the 33 team Ohio Catholic Invitational this past weekend in Newark winning by over 100 points. The Crusaders set a team record for points in the CIT scoring 319.5 and placing 12 wrestlers. Moeller had five individual champions: Senior Josh Newbanks at 125; Senior Charles Quehl at 215; Sophomore Germane Lindsey at 130; Sophomore Dean Gaier at 145; and Sophomore Frank Becker at heavyweight. 2nd place finishers were: Alex Weaver, Mike Mahon, and Nate Kmetz. 3rd place finishers were: Eric Gobin and Cebastian Hilton. Jared Glaser and Tommy Weinkam finished 4th_ For all the results, go to the CIT web site: http://www.baumspage.com/cit/cit05.htm The Junior High Crusader team also won the CIT this past weekend placing all but two wrestlers. The JH CIT, held at St. Edward HS, had 20 JH teams from around Ohio. John Gallagher was an individual champion at 122lbs. Moeller and Lakota West will be local representatives at this weekend's state dual meet at Wadsworth High School beginning Sunday at lOa.m. Moeller, No.4 in lastweek'sAssociated Press Division I state poll, took sixth place in the Powerade Christmas Tournament in Cannonsburg, Pa., which is ranked the sixth-best tournament in the nation by WrestlingReport.com. "We go to this to prepare our kids for the state tournament," Moeller coach Jeff Gaier said. "I was pleased with the way we competed considering we only had three wrestlers seeded and we placed six." All Moeller wrestlers won matches and 10 were in the top 12. Those placing in the top six

spots included juniors Alex Weaver (fourth at 103), Eric Cameron (fourth at 171) and senior Charles Quehl (fifthat215).JoshNewbanks (seventh at 125), Nate Kmetz (seventh at160) and Dean Gaier (eighth at 145) were unseeded along with Cameron. "Eric Cameron was the surprise of the tournament for us," Gaier said. "He defeated three seeded wrestlers to finish fourth." Gaier said if Moeller can defeat its first opponent Sunday - Beavercreek - the Crusaders would face Lakewood St. Edward, the defending Division I state champion. Fresh off an impressive thirdplace finish at Sunday's state dual meet, Moeller heads into the 32. school Catholic Invitational tournament with yet another challenging weekend. Ranked fourth in the Division I state poll, Moeller will be the headliner school in the large-school division along with St. Xavier (No.3 in the Enquirer coaches' poll), No.4 Elder and La Salle. Elder senior Rob Nusekabel was sixth at i state at 160 pounds last year. Purcell Marian will compete in the small-school division. The tournament, in its 44th year, is hosted by Newark Catholic High School and includes 50 wrestlers who qualified ·for state last . year, five of whom were state placers. "We expect the Catholic tournament to be very competitive," Moeller coach Jeff Gaier said. 'The tournament has a great tradition and we look forward to it and the competition each year." Gaier's squad is coming off a convincing win over No.3 Wadsworth at the state dual meet.

"We have been fortunate enough to compete against the best in Ohio, as well as the best in Pennsylvania and some other places." Three Crusaders top the Division I area honor roll in their respective weight classes: juniors Alex Weaver (ll-3 at 103), Eric Cameron (13-7 at 171) and senior Charles Quehl (17-3 at 215). Two Moeller wrestlers - Weaver and sophomore Nate Kmetz (160) -placed in last year's meet. Kmetz finished fifth and Weaver lost 16-ll in the finals to Lake Catholic junior Brian Connelly. "When any wrestler loses a match, revenge is big," Gaier said. "I think Alex is eager to get out there and go up against (Connelly) again. And the way Alex has been wrestling lately I think he's got a great chance of winning this time around." The two-day event begins Saturday at 10 a.m. The finals will be held Sundfly at 10 a.m.

If there were any questions about what wrestling program deserves bragging rights in the Cincinnati area, Moeller did a lot to answer them with a convincing performance in the Southwest Ohio Wrestling Coaches Association Holiday Classic at Mason. The Crusaders finished first in the 32-team tournament with a score of 273.50. Head coach Jeff Gaier knew his ' experienced team would see success in the tournament, but wasn't sure if they would be on top at the end. "We have a pretty nice, balanced team," said Gaier. "We know that every time we wrestle in this (tournament) that we are going to be in for some wars, so I'd say overall it was a pretty good weekend." The Crusaders were led by first-place finishers Alex Weaver (103 pounds) and Charles Quehl (2].5), while Eric Gobin (112), Germane lindsey (130) and Eric Cameron (171) each took second-place in their respective weight classes .. pion ship. "It's always good to get a win against a returning state qualifier," said Quehl. "I think our performance (m the tournament) proves what we have believed about our team all along." The Crusaders also benefited from a surprise showing from Gobin and Cebastian Hilton. Gobin, a freshman, entered the tournament unseeded before his second-place finish. Hilton, also unseeded, finished in fourth place in the 140-pound division.

"Both Eric and Cebastian had good performances that they can use to build some confidence for the rest of the season," Gaier said. Lakota West finished in second with a score of 220.50 and was followed by St. Xavier (181.50), Mason (143.50) and Elder (143.0). Lakota West's Alex F1ake (130) and Tony Bradberry (135) both took home championships, while the Firebirds had four others who finished in second or

third place. St Xavier made a strong showing with eight wrestlers finishing in sixth place or better. Zachary Marshall (275) of Mason, and Steve Anevski (189) of Elder were the only first-place finishers for their respective teams. Harrison finished with 119.50 points, placing them seventh overall and good enough for first-place in the small school division. Tyler Adams was the Wildcats' lone champion, finishing first in the 112-pound weight class. Sycamore's Victer Crenshaw took home most valuable wrestler honors after the senior won the 140-pound weight class. Crenshaw won convincingly with scores of 18-3 and 17-2 before knocking off Dan Mizener of Mason, 25-8 in the champion_ ship match. 'This feels pretty good to get this honor," said Crenshaw, who finished second in his weight class in last year's event. "Now the next step is to become state champ." A day after recording his 100th career victory, Joe Kaake of La Salle got wins number 101 and 102, knocking off Colerain's Ryan Erickson and Michael Lybarger of Mt Vernon to win the 119-pound weight class.

Moeller wrestling coach Jeff Gaier is not taking anything for granted as his team prepares for today's 6 p.m. sectional tournament at Wilmington High School. Despite being the No.4 team in the state media poll and the top seed in their sectional, which resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with the finals set for 4 p.m., the Crusaders know anything can happen. ~It is important to be sharp, because if you don't focus and wrestle well, you could be eliminated," Gaier said. Gaier noted three weight classes in particular - 119, 125 and 130 pounds- that will be anything but a walk in the park. Junior Jared Glaser (119), senior Josh Newbanks (125) and sophomore Germane lindsey (130) will have their hands full with Lakota East seniors Kent Pierson (119), Kody Pierson (125) and Billy Baker (130). The Lakota East trio defeated the three Crusaders in a dual meet at Moeller on Jan. 28. Newbanks, lindsey, senior Charles Quehl (215), junior Alex Weaver (103) and sophomore Dean Gaier (145) are returning state qualifiers and all won their weight classes at the Greater Catholic League tournament last Saturday. Lakota West, ranked sixth in the state, will be the No.2 seed at the Fairfield I sectional (5 p.m. today). After his team won the Greater Miami Conference tournament last Saturday, coach Scott Fetzer hopes it can keep its n:J.Omentum. "We put a lot of emphasis on the end of the year," Fetzer said. "We remind our kids that everything we have done is for this time of year." Saturday's Fairfield sectionals begin at 10:30 a.m., and the finals areat5p.m.. The Firebirds also return three state qualifiers from last season in senior Brian Almer and juniors Alex Flake and Tony Bradberry. Freshman Ryan Fields (103), Flake (130), Bradberry (135),Almer (171) and senior Ben Reinhardt (275) won their respective weight classes at the GMC tournament.

Division II Western Brown, ranked No.3 in the Divisions II-III area coaches' poll, will be the heavy favorite to take home a third consecutive sectional title this weekend in front of its home crowd. Today's action begins at 6 p.m., while Saturday's rounds are 11 a.m. and5p.m. "We feel pretty confident about our chances this year," Western Brown coach Scott Smith said. "We've prepared for these tournaments by playing a very difficult schedule this season, full of Division I squads." Western Brown sophomore Ryan Brownlee (135) is coming off a sixth-place finish at last year's state tournament. The returning sectional champ and defending district runner-up is 27-2. The Broncos have an up-andcoming star in freshman J.]. Ellis (152), who finished the regular season 24-12. Junior Brandon Naylor (160) and seniors Kyle Patrick (145) and Kyle Hollingsworth (140) also have realistic chances of being state qualifiers, according to Smith. Smith said Roger Bacon, ranked sixth in the Enquirer poll, will pose the biggest threat to the Broncos' three-peat hopes. The Spartans, however, will be without five starters due to injury and academics. "(Western Brown) is going to be tough to beat," Roger Bacon coach Brennan Ryan said. Roger Bacon, coming off its first GCL North title, is led by defending sectional champion junior David Hams (112) and senior Steve Brunsman (150). Ross, No.1 in the Enquirer poll, competes at the Eaton sectional.

Catholic tourney next for Crusaders

Fresh off an impressive thirdplace finish at Sunday's state dual meet, Moeller heads into the 32school Catholic Invitational tournament with yet another challenging weekend. Ranked fourth in the Division I · state poll, Moeller will be the headliner school in the large-school division along with St. Xavier _(No. 3 in the Enquirer coaches' poll), No.4 Elder and La Salle. Elder senior Rob Nusekabel was sixth at state at 160 pounds last year. Purcell Marian will compete in the small-school division. The tournament, in its 44th year, is hosted by Newark Catholic High School and includes 50 wrestlers who qualified for state last year, five of whom were state placers. ''We expect the Catholic tournament to be very competitive," Moeller coach Jeff Gaier said. 'The tournament has a great tradition and we look forward to it and the competition each year." Gaier's squad is coming off a convincing win over No.3 Wadsworth at the state dual meet.

''We've set our schedule up so that we can get our kids ready for the state tournament," Gaier said. ''We have been fortunate enough to compete against the best in Ohio, as well as the best in Pennsylvania and some other places." Three Crusaders top the Division I area honor roll in their respective weight classes: juniors Alex Weaver (11-3 at 103), Eric Cameron (13-7 at 171) and senior Charles Quehl (17-3 at 215). Two Moeller wrestlers- Weaver and sophomore Nate Kmetz (160) - placed in last year's meet. Kmetz finished fifth and Weaver lost 16-11 in the finals to Lake Catholic junior Brian Connelly. ''When any wrestler loses a match, revenge is big," Gaier said. "I think Alex is eager to get out there and go up against (Connelly) again. And the way Alex has been wrestling lately I think he's got a great chance of winning this time around." The two-day event begins Saturday at 10 a.m. The finals will be held Sunday at 10 a.m.

In today's era of specialization and year-round play in high school sports, it's increasingly rare to see an athlete such as Lakota West's Brian Almer. The Firebirds' senior was among the wrestlers advancing to today's final rounds of the Southwest Ohio Wrestling Coaches' Association Holiday Classic at Mason. Moeller, last year's Classic runner-up and the top-ranked team in the Enquirer Division I coaches' poll, leads the large-school division with 150 points after Saturday's final session. Lakota West was close behind with 111.50, while St Xavier was next with 110.50. Harrison leads the small-school division at 91.5. Almer is not only one of the area's top returning wrestlers, having placed sixth in the state in Division I at 171 pounds, but the senior also played on West's state semifinalist soccer teams the past two seasons. "It's nice to see a kid who's doing what he's doing," said West wrestling coach Scott Fetzer. ''He's a special y<>ung man." Almer wasn't just a role player in

soccer either, earning honorable mention honors on the Enquirer's All-Star team as a mid:fielder. He finished second in scoring in .the Greater Miami Conference with 12 goals and seven assists. His size, at 6 feet 1, 197 pounds, made him an intimidating presence defensively as well. "I give him a ton of credit for our success this year," West soccer coach Rick Cooper said. "He was the guy on the field people were worried about the most." Almer is hardly the only -wrestler to excel in more than one sport, as the tournament also features Pur7 cell Marian junior Carey Tighe (12th in Division II state cross country) and Mason's Zach Marshall (committed to play football at Maryland). But the soccer-wrestling combination isn't too common. Neither of his coaches, though, is surprised at Almer's success in

both sports. "His drive to succeed transcends just soccer or just wrestling," said Fetzer. "It is a rare combination, but he does a good job of balancing the two. I wouldn't want to keep his schedule." Probably the toughest part of Almer's transition was dropping from 197 pounds to 171 to make his current weight class. "It took me three or four weeks to get back in the swing of things," said Almer. Almer is focused on more than just duplicating last year's sixthplace state finish. "I'm looking to win state," he said. Also noteworthy Saturday was La Salle's 119-pourid senior, Joe Kaake, who made school history with his 100th career victory. The Coaches' Classic resumes at 10 a.m. today.

The class of area wrestling faces its stiffest test of the regular season at this weekend's Southwest Ohio Wrestling Coaches' Association Holiday Classic at Mason High School. Nine of the top 10 teams in the Enquirer Division I Honor Roll will be competing in the two-day event, including state-ranked Moeller (fourth), Lakota West (fifth) and Lakota East (lOth). "Being the biggest tournament of the year, that's a good incentive for our kids to do well," Moeller coach Jeff Gaier said. The field expands from 27 to 32 teams this year. 'The competition is so tough just within our team," said Lakota West coach Scott Fetzer, who starts four of those freshmen. "Ifll be a good test for them." Among the top returning individuals are Mason's Zach Marshall (second at 275), who will play football for Maryland next season. Another wrestler to watch is Sycamore's Victer Crenshaw, who was fourth at state at 140 pounds.

Coaches' Classic Finals for first, third and fifth place begin at 3 p.m. Sunday. Preliminary rounds start at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, with action resuming at 5:45 p.m. Semifinal and wrestleback matches begin at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Elder's Steve Anevski is a returning Classic runner-up at 189 pounds. Third-ranked Harrison returns to defend its smallschool division crown. Junior Tyler Adams, also a state qualifier for Harrison last season (103), is the only returning individual Classic champion in the field. Reading and Lebanon also should be in the mix for the small-school title.

If there were any questions about what wrestling program deserves bragging rights in the Cincinnati area, Moeller did a lot to answer them with a convincing perlormance in the Southwest Ohio Wrestling Coaches Association Holiday Classic at Mason. The Crusaders finished first in the 32-team tournament with a score of 273.50. Head coach Jeff Gaier knew his experienced team would see success in the tournament, but wasn't sure if they would be on top at the end. "We have a pretty nice, balanced team," said Gaier. 'We knew that every time we wrestle in this (tournament) that we are going to be in for some wars, so I'd say overall it was a pretty good weekend." The Crusaders were led by first-place finishers Alex Weaver (103 pounds) and Charles Quehl (215) while Eric Gobin (112), Gennane lindsey (130) and Eric Cameron (171) each took second-place in their respective weight classes. Quehl enjoyed an especially strong run, pinning his first three opponents in times of :43, :58 and 2:46, before knocking off returning state qualifier Jeremy Lovy of Lebanon 6-5 in the cham-

pionship. "It's always good to get a win against a returning state qualifier," said Quehl. "I think our performance (m the tournament) proves what we have believed about our team all along." The Crusaders also benefited from a surprise showing from Gobin and Cebastian Hilton. Gobin, a freshman, entered the tournament unseeded before his second-place finish. Hilton, also unseeded, finished in fourth place in the 140-pound division.

"Both Eric and Cebastian had good perlormances that they can use to build some confidence for the rest of the season," Gaier said. Lakota West finished in second with a score of 220.50 and was followed by St Xavier (181.50), Mason (143.50) and Elder (143.0). Lakota West's Alex flake (130) and Tony Bradberry (135) both took home championships, while the Frrebirds had four others who finished in second or

Sycamore's Victer Crenshaw took home most valuable wrestler honors after the senior won the 140-pound weight class. Crenshaw won convincingly with scores of 18-3 and 17-2 before knocking off Dan Mizener of Mason, 25-8 in the championship match. 'This feels pretty good to get this honor," said Crenshaw, who finished second in his weight class in last year's event. "Now the next step is to become state champ." A day after recording his 100th career victory, Joe Kaake of La Salle got wins number 101 and 102, knocking off Colerain's Ryan Erickson and Michael Lybarger of Mt Vernon to win the 119-pound weight class.

Moeller is expected to be the top area team in Division I this season. The Crusaders had a 12-4 dual record last season and placed eighth at state. Moeller has several state qualifiers returning, including senior Josh Newbanks, a state qualifier at 112 pounds. Newbanks has been impressive in conditioning and may move up to 119 or 125, according to Moeller coach Jeff Gaier. Senior Charles Quehl was a state qualifier at 215, and state alternate Nathan Kmetz (152) was fifth at districts. He may wrestle at 160 this year. Junior Alex Weaver returns at 103 as a state qualifier. Juniors Eric Cameron (171) and Jared Glaser (130) are district qualifiers. Sophomores Dean Gaier (140) and Germane lindsey (125) are state qualifiers. Sophomore Mike Mahon should be improved. Here are some other top area teams to watch:

The class of area wrestling faces its stiffest test of the regular season at this weekend's Southwest Ohio Wrestling Coaches' Association Holiday Classic at Mason High School. Nine of the top 10 teams in the Enquirer Division I Honor Roll will be competing in the two-day event, including state-ranked Moeller (fourth), Lakota West (fifth) and Lakota East (lOth). "Being the biggest tournament of the year, that's a good incentive for our kids to do well," Moeller coach Jeff Gaier said. The field expands from 27' to 32 teams this year. Another wrestler to watch is Sycamore's Victer Crenshaw, who was fourth at state at 140 pounds.

Two juniors expected to make an impact include Alex Flake (135) and Fairfield transfer Tony Bradberry, a junior at 140. Watch for freshman Ryan Fields. Lakota East - The Thunderhawks return state qualifiers Kent and Kody Pierson for their senior seasons along with district qualifiers Nate Hall (sophomore) and Dan Crone (senior). Elder - Two state qualifiers return in seniors Pat Hirth (112) and Rob Nusekabel, a state placer at 160. Senior Steve Anevski was a state alternate at 189. The Panthers return seven starters.
