ISLA DE PASCUA EASTER ISLAND Isla de origen volcánico que se eleva a 3.000 metros sobre el fondo oceánico. Su superficie basal tiene forma de trapecio y es 50 veces su área emergida. En cada vértice, producto de erupciones volcánicas, se localiza un volcán principal: el Poike al este (3 millones de años), el Rano Kau en el sur (2 millones de años) y el Maunga Terevaka en el norte (200.000 años). An island of volcanic origin, which rises 3.000 meters above the floor of the sea. Its base is in the form of a trapezoid and covers an area 50 times as large as the area above the surface of the water. In each corner, as a result of volcanic eruptions, there is a major volcano, Poike to the north-east (3 million years old), Rano Kau in the south (2 million years old), and Terevaka in the north-west (200.000 years old). There are also another 104 eruptive centers in the form of craters, cones and domes.

Tradicional Craftworks Artesanías Tradicionales Rosa Ika Paoa pertenece a una antigua familia de artesanas rapanui. Mamá, abuelita, tías y hermanas han trabajado los materiales que la naturaleza les proporciona hasta el dia de hoy. Entre éstos se encuentra el Mahute (corteza de la morera), Kakaka (hojas secas de plátano), Purau (arbusto parecido al Kakaka), Poko Poko (hojas de palmera), Mauko (pasto del Rano Kau), Totora, Pure (conchitas), semillas y plumas de las aves locales. Con ello fabrican los trajes ancestrales, individuales, alfombras, canastos, sombreros, carteras y bellísimas coronas, collares y adornos para el pelo. Usted los puede admirar en las afueras del aeropuerto, en la feria y el mercado artesanal. Rosa Ika Paoa is a member of a longstanding family of artists in Rapa Nui. Up until the present day, her grandmother, her mother, her aunts and sisters have all continued to work with the natural materials that the island gives to the artists in order to create such unique pieces of art. Among these are Mahute (mulberry bark), Kakaka (dried banana leaves) Purau (bushes somewhat similar to Kakaka), Poko Poko (palm leaves) Mauko (grasses from the volcano Rano Kau), Totora, Pure (small shells taken from the rocks at the edges of the sea), seeds and local chicken feathers. With these materials, the artists design and fabricate ancient costumes, throw rugs, baskets, hats, placemats, hand bags and absolutely gorgeous crowns, necklaces and hairpieces. These local masterpieces can be found and admired in various markets in the airport, central market and artists market uptown.

For the Rapanui, death forms part of life, just as life forms part of death. Our physical life is only one part of the existence of each human being. The people who lived on the Island, therefore, lived with death, with their dead ancestors and with the bodies in decomposition. In the past, when the bodies were burned behind the ahu (platform) in a crematorium, the people participated in the physical disintegration of the physical body of the men with mana (power or force). The dead body of a person with mana was placed on a circular platform, exposed to the sun, wind and rain until only the bones remained. The people were able to observe this disintegration day by day; the smell of decomposition was a permanent reminder of what was happening. Once the muscles and soft organs were decomposed, the skeletons were placed in rectangular cavities in front of the ahu and the skulls were decoratively etched. Finally all was buried. The moais (statues) became precise symbols of these important male personalities of each clan, that is to say, the men with mana. Men with extraordinary force could own other men and objects. The kings had this mana by right of birth; others could acquire it over their lifetime through extraordinary deeds. The person with mana had to demonstrate it constantly in order to maintain it and not loose it.

Para los Rapanui, la muerte forma parte de la vida, tal como la vida forma parte de la muerte. La vida física es sólo una etapa Pukao de la existencia humana. En tanto los simples mortales eran cremados detrás de un Ahu, toda la población participaba en la desintegración del cuerpo físico de los hombres con Mana. Colocados sobre una plataforma circular, expuestos al sol, al viento y a la lluvia hasta que finalmente sólo quedaban los huesos. La gente observaba la desintegración día a día; el olor a descomposición les solía recordar lo que estaba aconteciendo. Los esqueletos se colocaban luego en las cavidades rectangulares delante del Ahu y los cráneos se grababan artísticamente. Finalmente, se inhumaban. Los Moais representan precisamente estas personalidades masculinas de una tribu, vale decir, hombres con Mana. Los reyes poseían este poder por nacimiento; otros podían adquirirlo en el transcurso de sus vidas, para lo cual debían realizar hazañas extraordinarias, debían demostrarlo constantemente para no perderlo.

Acompañado de fiestas solemnes y pomposas, era finalmente erigido. A muchos Moais se les colocaba luego un Pukao, una especie de sombrerete rojo. Una vez erigido, se le esculpían las cuencas para los ojos que se fabricaban con coral blanco y pupilas de obsidiana o piedras de otro color. Así, el Mana del difun-

Once it was ready, after many months, the moai would travel, often for many kilometers, from the quarry at Rano Raraku to the ahu of the clan. El origen volcánico de la isla ha creado un mundo submarino con montañas, acantilados y numerosas cavernas en la superficie como también en el fondo del mar. Su inusual ecosistema submarino, sumergido en un infinito azul profundo, con una misteriosa flora y fauna con más de 160 especies, es una aventura para buzos profesionales y amateurs de todo el mundo. Los peces Indo-Pacíficos, Endémicos y pelágicos son los más numerosos en estas aguas, cuya temperatura promedio no baja de los 22°C.
The volcanic origins of the Island have created an irregular relief of mountains, cliffs and numerous caves on the surface as well as under the sea. The unusual submarine ecosystem, submerged in an infinite deep blue, with a mysterious flora and fauna of more than 160 species, is an adventure for both professional and amateur divers from around the world. The endemic pelagic Indo-Pacific fish are more numerous in these waters where the average temperature doesn’t drop below 22°C.

El fondo del mar está densamente cubierto por corales que se desarrollan alrededor de toda la isla, pero los frecuentes temporales y las marejadas en invierno impiden la formación de arrecifes como las que existen en otras islas del Pacífico. La transparencia de las aguas, gracias al escaso plancton y a la ausencia de contaminantes, permite una visibilidad que puede alcanzar hasta los 60 metros de profundidad. Una profundidad que devela anclas y elementos diversos que testimonian el trágico pasado de algunos navegantes europeos.
The sea floor is densely covered by corals which develop around the entire island, but the frequent storms and high seas in winter impede the formation of the reefs that exist on other Pacific islands. The transparency of the water, as a result of the scarcity of plankton and the lack of contamination, gives a visibility which can reach to a depth of 60 meters, a depth which reveals anchors and other diverse elements which are a testimonial to the tragic past of some of the European navigators. 9

La zona más atractiva para la práctica del buceo es la costa Oeste, donde se encuentra el pueblo de Hanga Roa, porque cuenta con un importante relieve submarino cubierto con abundantes especies coralíferas como el Kare Nui Nui. The most attractive area for diving is the west coast, near the town of Hanga Roa, since it offers an important submarine relief covered with abundant species of coral, such as the Kare Nui Nui. Other interesting places are the cliffs of the Motu Nui and Motu Kao Kao islets, the caves of Motu Tautara, Omohi, Tepeu, Anakena, Ovahe and La Pérouse on the northern coast.
