Palmer’s Catering: Mastering the Art of a Perfect Party A s the preferred caterer for five of Fairfield County’s most sought-after party venues, Palmer’s Catering and Events, a wing of the beloved, family-owned Palmer’s Market, has been bringing celebrations and events of all kinds to life for more than a decade of its 100-year history. From elaborate weddings and elegant, multi-course, seated dinners, to corporate holiday events and lively birthday bashes, Palmer’s prides itself, first and foremost, on exceptional food.
“We go above and beyond for our clients and the most important thing, what really stands out, is our food quality. Our dishes are delicious, and the plates and stations are beautiful. Our scratch bakery plays a huge role, designing everything from custom dessert bars featuring hand-decorated cake pops, cookies, and cupcakes to ornate wedding cakes. We don’t just show up and pump out food. A lot of care and love goes into our custom menus,” said Managing Director Megan Palmer Rivera. But Palmer’s Catering is about so much more than sumptuous cuisine and baked goods prepared under the direction of a CIA-trained chef. It stands ready with its Gourmet-to-Go menu for simpler affairs and business
meetings and can pare down or add on to the exact specifications of the customer. For those looking for something more elaborate, Catering Director of Sales and Operations Melissa Zelaya says that what makes Palmer’s special is the promise of a fully formed event. “We have a passion for detail,” she says. “We want to help create an event that feels cohesive from start to finish. Themes, décor, space, music, timing, rentals, flowers…we handle all of it.” That list includes graphic design for custom invitations, menus and place cards, and signage for food stations. In the case of kids’ parties, it might well include a face painter, bouncy castle, or other entertainment. Parents of a little girl celebrating her 5th birthday were looking to host something whimsical, colorful, and fun for both kids and adults. Working with the Palmer’s team, the family landed on a Candyland theme. A lollipop tree outside the home set the tone, while inside, two massive balloon installations greeted guests who entered over a game board and were handed cards that directed them to the adult and children’s areas of the party. Dishes of jellybeans and candies flanked a polka

“We always come home with the best ideas,” said Zelaya. And the creativity doesn’t go unnoticed. One of Palmer’s many returning clients started years ago with their young child’s birthday party. Since then, the family has had two more children, both of whom have been celebrated with Palmer’s parties, in addition to a huge 40th birthday celebration for the husband. Now, they’re planning the wife’s own 40th, with a beautiful, plated dinner for 50 under a tent decked out with custom lighting, furniture, flowers and beautiful linens, followed the next day with a casual BBQ for just close friends and family. “We’re honored to be part of such special moments in people’s lives,” said Zelaya, and our goal is to do such an exceptional job that our events are better than our clients could ever have imagined.” palmersdarien.com 264 Heights Road, Darien CT

For a two-year-old’s party, unicorns and rainbows took center stage. Unicorn shaped sandwiches, mac and cheese served in rainbow cups, a beverage station that served “unicorn tea” with rainbow straws, a rainbow unicorn cake with gold detail, unicorn gift bags, and custom water bottles all added to the theme. For adults, a rainbow of mimosa flavors was offered, along with items like a vibrant fruit platter arranged with strawberries, kiwi, grapes, orange segments and more.

any of us can recall exactly where we were twenty years ago on September 11. I was working as a reporter for Women’s Wear Daily and it was fashion week in New York. That day was perfect, weather wise. Clear blue skies with a bit of a crisp cool fall breeze after a slew of hot summer days. It was 9 a.m. and I was sitting at Bryant Park at the Liz Lange Maternity fashion show. It was a celebration of sorts as pregnant models graced that runway—beaming with pride as they walked feeling more fashionable than ever. I remember walking out after the show and seeing that something wasn’t right. There was a massive cloud of smoke downtown and people were running up Sixth Avenue. My phone (I had a Blackberry) wasn’t yet smart enough to tell me what was happening. I walked back to our offices on 34th Street and Fifth Avenue and learned right away how the world as we knew it was changed. A colleague was crying at her desk— her husband was a police officer in downtown Manhattan (we later learned that he was okay. Phew). Our city was in chaos. And the world had indeed changed. Living and working in New York in the days, months and years following 9/11 have forever changed me. I will never forget hearing the names of people I knew who were missing— one of whom I had just graduated college with a couple of years prior. I will never forget the missing persons posters, the smell (it was like smoke mixed with bleach), the sadness. And

so, sitting down with Frank and Mary Fetchet last month in New Canaan, really brought a lot of those raw feelings back. And while I had not lost what they did, I felt their pain. The Fetchets run their nonprofit, Voices of Resilience, in New Canaan. They started it just after losing their son Brad, who died in the North Tower that day. Brad was only 24. “It’s hard to think about what would have been if Brad was alive today,” says Frank. It is hard. But what the Fetchets have done over the last 20 years to help people—survivors, responders and their families—is nothing short of miraculous. It’s because of their guidance that thousands of people have someone to go to for help getting through some of the worst tragedies we could imagine. Mary Fetchet has been in front of Congress several times fighting for the rights of these people, she has led a truly commendable organization and will only grow it from here. She is quite the inspiration. “When I think about the early days and being in that initial fog of what had happened, I can’t help but think that we got through it because of this community,” she says. “We simply could not have done without them.” You can learn more about the Fetchets in Leading With Resilience (page 16). MAURICIO UMANSKY PLANS TO SHAKE UP FAIRFIELD COUNTY’S REAL ESTATE SCENE WITH THE OPENING OF THE AGENCY IN NEW CANAAN
CONTRIBUTED
A
s far as real estate agents go, Mauricio Umansky could be one of the most recognizable faces in the business. He’s closed some pretty major deals in California over the years—the Playboy mansion (which was the first home in Los Angeles to sell for over $100 million), the Walt Disney estate and former homes of Michael Jackson, Prince and Michael Jordan to name just a few. His successes have even played out on Bravo’s hit show, Million Dollar Listing. But now, his luxury real estate agency, simply called The Agency, has opened at 2 South Avenue in New Canaan, one of the first
outposts on the East Coast for the rapidly growing brand. He’s partnered with longtime Fairfield County agents Cliff Smith and Todd David Miller, who own and operate the franchise territory throughout the county. Umansky says that with Smith and Miller at the helm here, he plans to “disrupt” the way real estate business is done in Fairfield County by offering clients a white glove approach to the experience of high-end home buying and selling. Here, we chat with Umansky about his firm’s growth and how he plans to bring his company’s level of service to our towns.

We are a boutique firm with a truly global reach. Our brand is unmatched in its power to deliver results for our agents and clients through our unparalleled marketing and proprietary technology offerings. We are among the most followed real estate brands in the world on Instagram. Our social media, in-house public relations and creative team bring distinct and effective marketing strategies to both our agents and our properties. Why was it important to open in New Canaan? Cliff and Todd reached out to me last year with the idea of bringing The Agency to Connecticut. It came at a perfect time as we were beginning to expand the brokerage into other luxury markets in strategic locations on the east coast. With Fairfield County being a suburb of NYC, and New Canaan specifically being such
a beautiful and desirable town, we felt very confident this was a natural fit. Cliff and Todd were also our ideal partners to lead the charge as they already had such a strong business and reputation in the area with sales topping $100 million in 2020. They both represent The Agency culture and brand so well. We couldn’t be happier with this endeavor and they have already achieved so much in the few months since joining us. What is your plan to expand on the East Coast? The Agency has continued its growth trajectory with the debut of multiple new franchise locations this year, with our expansion on the east coast as a top priority. Introducing and expanding our brand’s presence with our existing offices and in synergistic regions including Boston, Montreal, Las Vegas, Maui, Denver, Seattle and the Cayman Islands is paramount to us. This year alone we’ve already

launched new franchise locations in Oakville, Canada, North Shore-New York, Calgary and Vancouver, Canada, as well as new corporate office locations in Studio City and Pacific Palisades, California. In addition, we have a presence in the DC Metro area and South Florida, with more expansion on both coasts on the way. What can a buyer/seller expect when working with one of your agents? White-glove customer service. We have a fullservice in-house marketing team of specialists, including award-winning digital marketers, publicists and designers. Our support team is dedicated to each and every one of our agents to help them maximize their business and to go above and beyond for clients. Buyers and sellers can expect true collaboration across all our offices and sales agents. We truly operate as one family. Also, we understand real estate is one of the most personal decisions and one of the largest financial decisions a person will make. An app can’t tell you about the school district, neighborhood, history of the home, street or suburb. We are on-the-ground experts in each market we serve and aim to guide clients through this important investment each step of the way. What is your view on the market in general? Will it stay this active? On a macro level across the country, we are seeing similar trends with buyers opting for suburban living over dense cities. With the workfrom-home culture remaining, buyers have the option of working from anywhere. This is to the benefit of suburban towns like New Canaan, Darien and others in Connecticut. New Canaan has been a top choice among New Yorkers exiting the city with its beautiful, quintessential Connecticut estates, top schools and the wide variety of dining destinations and boutique shopping.

LEADING WITH RESILIENCE AFTER LOSING THEIR SON 20 YEARS AGO IN THE 9/11 ATTACKS, THE FETCHETS LOOK TO BRING PREPAREDNESS AND HEALING TO COMMUNITIES OF TRAGEDIES WORLDWIDE

I
t was the morning of September 11, 2001, when New Canaan native Brad Fetchet had just settled in to work at his new position as an equities trader at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods on the 89th floor of World Trade Center’s South Tower. American Airlines flight 11 had just crashed into the North Tower and in minutes, the 24-year-old Bucknell graduate called his dad, Frank, and spoke with him for a bit before leaving a voicemail for his mom, Mary, reassuring her that he was okay and that she was “welcome to give a call. I think we’ll be here all day,” he says.
Those were the last words heard from Brad. Just minutes after he left that message, the North Tower was hit by the second commercial airliner and Brad’s office was located above the impact zone. Brad became one of the 2,977 victims of that day, leaving behind a loving family that included his two younger brothers, Chris and Wes, who were just teens at the time. “As parents, we are supposed to protect our kids. We are supposed to keep them safe,” says an emotional Frank Fetchet, as we looked back on that last conversation, he had with his oldest newcanaandarienmag.com

Today, 20 years later, we sit in the New Canaan offices of Brad’s parents’ nonprofit, now known as the Voices Center for Resilience, the organization that continues to keep Brad’s life, and the thousands of other victims, alive through support and guidance in the years following tragedy. Frank gives well-deserved praise to his wife, Mary, for the countless hours she has worked to help those victims’ families through (and still living with) the same sort of grief she was feeling. Mary, a trained clinical social worker, has worked her whole career at helping families live with grief, so it seemed fitting for her to sit as the force behind their charity. Over the last 20 years she and her team have provided valuable long-term support services to victim’s families, responders and survivors. Through her organization, Mary has worked tirelessly in order to advocate for the rights of victims’ families and survivors, she’s aided in developing an appropriate process for the notification of human remains, the Victim’s Compensation Fund and the creation of the 9/11 Memorial that currently sits at the World SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021 NEW CANAAN•DARIEN

Trade Center site. She has testified in front of U.S. Congress on five occasions. She is a fighter and she’s not giving up any time soon. “This 20th anniversary is such a milestone, especially for those of us who remember that day so clearly,” Mary says. “Leading up to this anniversary we can see that there is so much demand to support what’s needed for the families, responders and survivors. And these needs will continue.” And, to set her organization up to help even more people work through tragedy, the Fetchets have officially changed their organization’s name from Voices of September 11 to the Voices Center for Resilience. Mary explained that it was back in 2007, after the mass shooting at Virginia Tech, when she realized that their community wasn’t prepared with how to handle the needs of those victims’ families. “It was then when we saw a real opportunity to help prepare and advance communities in the face of tragedy,” Mary says. “We were already set up and prepared to respond and give needed guidance and support. Whether it’s the recent collapse of the apartment building in Miami, a school shooting or a terrorist attack—there are slight differences in those kinds of tragedies, but the needs of the families are the same. They are dealing with loss and grief, and we can provide them with the support from people who truly understand what they are going through.” To help shine light on this 20th anniversary, the Voices Center will hold an art exhibition at the Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan, with an opening reception on September 1. Then, a conference and remembrance symposium will be open free to anyone at the Marriott Downtown in New York City on September 9 and 10. Attendees can register to appear in person or virtually and will be treated to a stellar lineup of speakers including Bobby Valentine who will speak about sports and September 11, doctors on medical updates and lawyers working to bring justice to victims’ families. The annual gala will then take place on November 3 at the New York Athletic Club.

G
race Farms is (finally!) scheduled to reopen to the public this month after more than a year of closure due to the pandemic. With expansive spaces and one of the most beautiful pieces of landscape in our reach, Grace Farms has quickly become an essential community space for those of us who choose to gather, dine, work or play there. While much of what guests will come back to will be the same as they remember, those who frequent the Grace Farms Café are in for a treat. The café will now offer take-home treats and gift boxes thanks to the dedicated Grace Farms Foods team led by cofounders Adam Thatcher and Sharon Prince. “While on-site I saw firsthand the opportunity for people who loved the experience of coming and gathering at Grace Farms,” explains Thatcher, who was previously in the role of director of operations and sustainability at Grace Farms before branching off to start Grace Farms Foods. “People would come to us and ask if they can purchase bags of our coffee beans because they loved it that much.” After doing his research and learning how a nonprofit organization like Grace Farms can run something like a packaged food business, Thatcher and Prince were able to branch off in order to launch Grace Farms Foods last year.
The idea, he says, was to create take-home foods so that people far and wide can take a piece of the Grace Farms experience with them. The result has been an online launch of curated bundles offering coffee, tea and cookies. Eventually, Thatcher says he plans to launch more items that remind people of the Grace Farms experience. But, Thatcher stresses, this isn’t your typical food business. Thatcher sees the brand as an entirely new model of social entrepreneurship not only because 100 percent of all of the profits go directly to support the missions of the Grace Farms Foundation, but every single

product they offer demonstrates all of the values that the organization represents. For example, all coffees are sourced from women led co-ops in Columbia, Indonesia and Ethiopia and ingredients are all organic and in biodegradable packaging. The chocolate chip cookies were even recalibrated by local chef and Grace Farms Foods founding board member Silvia Baldini who helped to gather ethically sourced ingredients and specialty sea salts to create a truly delicious cookie. For those looking to purchase the products online, they’re available on the organization’s Amazon store or on gracefarmsfoods.com. Curated bundles start at $28 for one container of tea and two boxes of cookies, to $129 for the whole collection. Or you can even customize your own bundle. All products will also be available for purchase on-site. “It has been a very exciting thing to be able to pioneer this new model of social entrepreneurship,” Thatcher says. “When we reopen Grace Farms, it’s going to be so great to see people go home with our products and a piece of our mission.” Looking ahead the organization plans to launch more cookie varieties as well as a gluten-free option.

GETTING THERE
The Florida Keys are made up of 1,700 coral isles that curl from the south Florida peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico. Key Largo is the first island on the arrow-thin Overseas Highway. It’s also the largest. Hop a flight to Miami, rent a car, and it’s a short one-hour drive to Key Largo. As cheesy T-shirt shops and tacky roadside bars float
past your window, you might think we are leading you astray with promises of Caribbean luxury. Turning into Playa Largo Resort and Spa from Highway One is like finding a vintage Chanel bag at Goodwill. Sorry Florida, you know we’re right on this one. “The Keys” often get lumped together and painted with a singular Jimmy Buffet brush.

THE RESORT
Stretched over fourteen acres of pristine white sand on the shores of the Florida Bay, Playa Largo has resorts within the resort. For honeymooners or couples who just really like each other, there are The Hammocks. The cheerily painted bungalows are hidden from the hustle of the main resort in the shade of literal Florida Hammocks (trees). Each of the ten cottages features
a master bedroom encompassing the entire second floor, lookout decks, full kitchens, living rooms and secluded back porches. The hotel has 177 rooms decorated in a contemporary style and blessedly free of kitschy oceanfront décor, and outfitted with $400 illy coffee makers. For the ultimate retreat or destination wedding, there’s The Beach House. It is on the far end of the resort beach and has a private
pool overlooking the ocean, wrap-around deck, private beach and event lawn. With three bedrooms, endless lanai seating and hammocks strung from the branches of the waterfront sea grape trees, it’s no wonder The Beach House is already booked every weekend for the next year. Hotel room rates start at $400 per night. The Hammocks at $900 per night. The Beach House $3,500 per night. If you want to bring
the entire family or your entourage, book one of the brand-new Ocean Residences by Playa Largo. These luxury homes are across the street on the Atlantic side of the island (that’s how narrow Key Largo is), offering both privacy and full service. (Note: You can’t walk from the homes to the resort, but it’s only a two-minute drive.) Each of the five homes feature private balconies, soaking tubs in sprawling master suites, full indoor and

outdoor kitchens. Guests of the Ocean Residences have exclusive access to the oceanfront pool, all resort amenities and the clubhouse located at the tip of the community at the watersports pier. The clubhouse offers lockers, showers and a full lounge— making it easy to enjoy beach activities from kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing,
parasailing and more without needing to drive back “home” to shower and change. Every stay includes a picnic basket of breakfast goodies delivered every morning with additional options to pre-stock the fridge or invite a private chef to handle dinners. The homes sleep ten and start at $1,800 per night.

THE BEACH The real stars of the show are the expanse of talcum white sand and warm waters. Choose from a chaise lounge shaded by the beachfront trees or one of the many pods of hammocks. The Florida Bay is a shallow lagoon that connects the Gulf of Mexico with the western side of the Keys. Grab a floatie and drift on the still water until you hear the bell that’s rung daily to warn that sunset is just thirty minutes away. Take a spot at one of the two fire pits, sip a sunset cocktail and enjoy the resort’s Eventide Celebration. The staff lights tiki torches as Caribbean drumbeats fill the air. Guests are offered cocktails and asked to write their worries/stresses on a piece of paper that’s placed on a floating buoy and set off to sea. We couldn’t find paper big enough for our worries, so we just went for the cocktail portion of the evening.
THE POOL The zero-entry pool with arched gazebo is designed for envyinducing Instagram posts. The Sand Bar services the pool and beach with food and cocktails. It’s not often that we rave about the culinary offerings of a beach bar, but the Sand Bar is exceptional. Try the gluten-free pizza that actually tastes like pizza and the watermelon salad drizzled with basalmic reduction.

THE SPA The largest spa in the Keys, The Ocean Spa offers a variety of treatments using locally sourced ingredients for scrubs, wraps and more. But
the most important factor in evaluating a spa, in our opinion, is the ability to enjoy a post-massage nap. So the expansive relaxation area with double-wide chaise lounges separated from other guests by whisper thin curtains had us hooked.
SETTING SAIL The highlight of a stay at Playa Largo is getting out on the water with Captain Lolly who commands the mighty Carolina Moon catamaran. Ok, it’s not all that mighty, but with Captain Lolly at the helm, it’s an amazing amount of fun. You can book day trips, sunset trips and champagne trips. The water is as warm as the south Caribbean, the champagne is cold, and Lolly is a gifted photographer who loves nothing more than to send you home with amazing memories of your time in Key Largo. Book through Caribbean Watersports under the pier at the end of the beach. caribbeanwatersports .com
EXPLORING THE REEFS Surrounded by crystal blue water and thriving reefs, Key Largo is a hot spot for diving. Here you’ll find the only living barrier reef off the continental United States. The area is also known for its remarkable wreck diving. You’ll find the world's largest artificial reef, the 510-foot USS Spiegel Grove (deliberately sunk to create a reef) and more. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was established in 1963 and is the first under-the-sea park in
the U.S. Here you can swim with the coral fish and high five the underwater 4,000pound Christ of the Deep (sometimes called Christ of the Abyss), a bronze statue by Italian sculptor Guido Galletti submerged about twenty-five feet under water. The Jesus effigy is robed and barnacled, with arms outstretched and gaze raised to the light above. Though he’s covered in dangerous fire coral, he’s been high-fived frequently enough that it’s been worn off his hands, making it safe for you to do the same. Brides have the option to feel like a mermaid with Playa Largo’s underwater weddings. Couples say “I do” amongst the shallow-water corals, shipwrecks and hidden treasures of the Keys. To anchor their love, they can sponsor the planting of a coral reef fragment that will remain and continue to grow over the years.
BEST BITES The best food in the area is at Chef Michaels in nearby Islamorada. Anyone who’s seen the moodily atmospheric Netflix series Bloodline, set around a family-run Islamorada beachfront inn, knows the territory. Chef Michaels is a roadside treasure deserving of a Michelin star. Reservations are a must. Order the lion fish cooked whole. Not only is it delectable, you’re helping to save the ocean by removing a dangerous predator. foodtotalkabout.com On your way back to the resort stop at The Islamorada Brewery & Distillery located at mile marker 82.2 with a bright yellow-andteal-colored tasting

ost of us probably associate Alzheimer’s disease with memory loss and possibly confusion and anger. But less common symptoms such as the loss of spatial reasoning—the inability to recognize or find familiar objects that are in plain sight—can also signal the presence of the disease and its variants. “That’s when you’ve lived in the same house for 30 years but suddenly, you’re
confusing which light switch does what,” says Dr. Carolyn Fredericks, M.D., assistant professor of neurology at Yale. “Or you look in the fridge for the orange juice, and even though it’s right in front of you, you can’t pick it out from the crowd of other objects.” Dr. Fredericks has a special interest in looking at the less-common types of Alzheimer’s, where the prominent signs may be mistaken for dementia or may lie in newcanaandarienmag.com

“completely different realms of thinking,” she says. The danger is that they are masking the onset of the fatal disease, delaying diagnosis and treatment. She and her colleagues in the Fredericks Lab, a research facility on the Yale University campus, are using advanced neuroimaging technology to understand how variant strains of Alzheimer’s spreads across networks in the brain.

Some memory loss can be normal as we age. But here are some of the red flags when Alzheimer’s might be suspected
Disruptive memory loss—when daily life or tasks are too tough to handle because you consistently forget recently learned information.
Challenges in planning or problem solving—you take much longer to complete a task that you’ve done before or can’t keep track of your monthly bills.
Difficulty completing familiar tasks—you have trouble driving to a local grocery store and remembering where it is.
Confused about time or place— forgetting where you are or how you got there.
New problems with words in speaking or writing—repeating the same phrase over and over or struggling with vocabulary. Source: Alzheimer’s Association

“I get a deep satisfaction from walking through the treatment process with a family.” — C A R O LY N F R E D E R I C K S , M . D.
The hope is that their work will result in earlier identification of the illness, more precise monitoring for future drug studies, and identification of targets for direct treatments particularly for patients with atypical variants of Alzheimer’s disease. Meanwhile, in her clinical practice, Dr. Fredericks sees patients with a variety of cognitive and behavioral issues and concerns. During an initial visit, Dr. Fredericks asks detailed questions around a patient’s medical history and does cognitive testing to test memory, language, attention, and spatial functions. She also conducts a neurological exam that checks a range of abilities, including a patient’s motor system, reflexes, and coordination. “I get a deep satisfaction from walking through the treatment process with a family, offering resources and medications that can help the patient feel better, even though it won’t make the illness go away,” she says. “Of course, I love it when I’m able to reverse a newcanaandarienmag.com

process for someone. Sometimes, we will learn that a patient’s thyroid is not working well or that they have an autoimmune condition we can treat. Those kinds of catches are amazing to be a part of.” The Connecticut resident graduated from Brown with a BA in the Classics and a BS in Neuroscience before going on to the Stanford University School of Medicine. In April, Dr. Fredericks was named a Henry F. McCance Yale Scholar, recognizing her as an outstanding young faculty member, granting her funding for research. She also recieved a $175,000 research grant from the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s and its variants do more harm than rob memory or spatial reasoning. They are also usually fatal. Now, death rates from the progressive disease, for which there is no cure, are on the rise: something Fredericks and others are working to stem. “Research is the path forward with this disease,” says Ginny Hanbridge, Executive Director of the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. “We are so honored and proud to have so many dedicated scientists in Connecticut, including Dr. Fredericks, working to get us closer to new treatments and hopefully a cure for this disease.” Alzheimer's Association is the largest nonprofit funding research in the world, currently providing $235 million to more than 650 active research projects in 39 countries, including $2 million in research in Connecticut.

T
rue artists keep growing and exploring, and Art Space Café is Chef Bill Taibe’s new medium. Set in the vibrant Art Space Museum, this contemporary spot is a creative oasis on busy West Avenue in Norwalk. Chef Taibe curates locally produced, highquality coffee, tea, nut milk, bread, pastry, cheese and chocolate, to create an all-day menu that hits every flavor note. Embracing healthful trends, the chef and his team have created indulgent vegan and gluten-free “light fare” with plenty of fruit, greens, nuts and grains.
Good news for omnivores: eggs, cheese, fish and meats are given the Taibe touch too. Half of the menu is devoted to refreshing hot and cold beverages: locally roasted ILSE Coffee prepared by drip or in a full range of espresso-based drinks, loose Arogya Teas, Cross Culture Kombucha and artisan nut milks from the Hudson Valley. Art Space Café’s got it covered—cold brews, espresso ginger tonics, matcha lattes, and the Itariahito an eastmeets-west blend of matcha latte and espresso. First, we just had to try the “What Bill’s SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021 NEW CANAAN•DARIEN

Having.” If anyone can bring unexpected ingredients together into a mysteriously delicious blend, it is chef Taibe. Matcha, pistachio milk, cherry syrup and espresso, this is a cold drink in tones of khaki, tan and cream that tastes creamy, nutty and just-sweetenough, with a strong caffeine kick. For nonor pre-caffeinated folks, the most refreshing cold drink is an old-fashioned shrub. The base is fruit steeped in sugar and vinegar. We tried the raspberry shrub. It was light, bubbly, with a thirst-quenching sweet-sour fruitiness.
left: Avocado tofu with queso blanco, sprouts and alp blossom far right: the mixed berry shrub below: Caitlin McGowan shows off two popular dishes.
Here you could start the day with a cup of cafe au lait or a fine Earl Grey tea, accompanied by a warm baguette, butter and matcha pear jam, and feel like you’ve found a touch of Europe in Norwalk. But try a bowl of rich, creamy chocolate coconut “yogurt,” topped with raspberries and raspberry dust over a layer of espresso granola (puffed and toasted grains, bits of chocolate, and a hint of salt). With its smooth and crunchy textures, fresh fruit and dark chocolate, sweetness and essential touch of salt, this was dessert for breakfast or lunch, and we’re all in. Many of the salads bring together greens, grains and fruits. Heirloom melon salad hit every note, the sweet melon dressed in a berry vinaigrette with pink slivers of pickled onions that brought a taste memory of melon and prosciutto—without the cured ham. That’s our kind of vegan. Pea shoots were treated as vegetables rather than garnish, and why not? Sweet, green, fresh and paired with blueberries and black berries and the vinaigrette, the salad was large enough to share and a welcome addition to the table as it balanced the richer, hearty sandwiches. The grilled cheese sandwich was a rich, grilled croissant, filled with good cheddar and smoked strawberry-onion marmalade. Plan to cut this in half to share (or take half home). Smoked turkey comes from Hoodoo Brown BBQ in Ridgefield, which was paired with golden kimchee (made with turmeric) on thick slices of black raisin bread. To our taste, newcanaandarienmag.com

the avocado toast didn’t need the upgrades of kimchee and cottage cheese. The mashed avocado is seasoned with lemon, scallions and Za’atar, a Middle Eastern spice blend. There are a lot of alluring sweet toasts on the menu, like strawberry covered chocolate toast and almond butter on chocolate malt bread. The pastries, which come from Flour, Water, Salt in Darien are superb. Kouing-Amann, a fat, sweet, sticky croissant baked in a muffin tin, is a wonder of buttery layers of puff pastry. Pain au chocolate, bombolini, and artistan chocolate bars from House of Knipschildt also tempt. Chef Taibe is known for cooking with the seasons; the ingredients may change, but the flavor profiles always pop. Like any real artist, he doesn’t just want to repeat his greatest hits. On the afternoon we stopped in, the chef and his team gathered around a table to taste a new recipe. At another table, chocolatier Fritz Knipschildt was having lunch. He recommended the tuna sandwich with sweet pepper conserves on artisan bread seasoned with herbs from the Alps. It was the second time he’d ordered it. A family with children pulled two round tables together and ordered peanut butter and jelly croissants. The vibe was friendly and cool, a place we’d come back to. Put Art Space Café on your list of places to meet.

David Tuttle
N
o, it’s not your imagination: The cost of college has skyrocketed over the past decade, greater than inflation, higher than your raise, faster than the cost of living. At the University of Connecticut, for example, tuition is in the middle of a five-year, 23 percent rate hike. Sending Junior to Storrs costs about $18,500 per year for tuition and fees. Sending him to a private university averages about twice that, at $37,000, according to the

College Board. Tack on another $13,000 or so for room and board at either option. Covid-19 has served as a reckoning for soaring school costs, says David Tuttle, partner and portfolio manager at Crestwood Advisors in Darien. During the pandemic, as schools offered courses virtually, many families wondered, “Why can’t people just learn online? Why do you need to go to college?” Tuttle says. Schools took note. Though tuition edged up for the academic year 2020-2021, it did so at historically low levels. Still, the price tag remains out of reach for many Fairfield County families. “The profile of Fairfield County is that all the families can afford to self-pay,” Tuttle says. “The reality is that there are kids even in Darien, New Canaan and Greenwich that’s not the case for. They have a tremendous burden and pressure to follow the normal path of going to college.” His advice: Start saving early. “When kids are born, we’re encouraging parents to set up
529 plans.” Designed specifically for education, 529s let you invest in mutual funds, ETFs and the like, but your investments grow tax-free, so long as you use the proceeds for approved education expenses, such as tuition, books, room and board. Unlike many other tax-saving investments, 529s don’t come with income constraints. Connecticut’s 529 plan, the Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET), is more attractive than ever, says Tuttle. Last December, the state selected Fidelity to administer it, lowering fees and expanding investment options. Connecticut parents can contribute up to $10,000 per year to CHET; earnings grow free of federal and state taxes. “You can contribute $50,000 today, pay your tuition tomorrow, and take $10,000 each year for five years,” he says. “I have had clients maximize the tax benefit in state to get the maximum, and then invest outside.” If the designated beneficiary decides to forgo college, you can
transfer the account without penalty to another family member —even yourself—so long as it’s used for qualified education expenses. Families don’t need a lot of money to set up a college fund. Tuttle’s dad and grandfather each invested $500 into a Putnam Growth Fund when Tuttle was born, then started showing him the balance when he was ten years old and had his first job cutting lawns. “This money tripled in ten or twelve years, and here I was cutting lawns.” As soon as your child is eligible, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which determines whether you qualify for government aid. Complete it even if you won’t qualify for need-based aid. Many schools grant merit-aid, based on grades, test scores or talents in things like sports, music and the arts. The average award for undergraduates in 2019-2020 was $14,940, according to the College Board. Without completing the FAFSA, you won’t get anything.
If you will need more aid than offered, write a email of appeal to the school financial aid office, outlining factors like reduced salary at work, a lay-off, a sibling attending graduate school or a bigger package from a comparable school. Get your appeal in early, Tuttle says. When schools exhaust their aid resources, there’s not much they can do for you. Also, Tuttle advises some of Fairfield County’s wealthiest families, but he also mentors kids who live in subsidized housing in Darien. “There’s an opportunity for kids with drive to find a way to get to the finish line and pay little or nothing,” he says. “There are non-traditional paths that are a jungle-gym. It requires real planning.” Attending two years of Norwalk Community College or Housatonic Community College, for example, can shave tens of thousands of dollars off of a four-year college tab. The same holds for dozens of online, accredited schools. To lower the cost even further, get a job at Chipotle, Starbucks, Walmart or any number of other employers that pay or reimburse for college, even for part-time employees.

n June 2, the first Garden Tea at the Mather Homestead, one of Darien’s finest historically preserved and protected town landmarks, was a great success. Dining at tables named for flowers and decorated with botanicals from the Mather Homestead’s garden with china from its historic collection, a gathering of more than 120 guests enjoyed tea boxes prepared by Carolyn’s Absolutely Fabulous Foods of Darien. Guests were serenaded by local musicians from the Con Fuoco string quartet. After lunch, “American Eden” author Victoria Johnson delighted with stories of botanical history. Of the sold-out event, Mather executive director Heather Raker said, “Our mission is to preserve and use the Homestead for public education and enjoyment, and the event did both in a big way.” newcanaandarienmag.com

e think it’s pretty safe to say that the future looks bright. This year’s top teens are like no other we’ve profiled. Sure, they’re smart and multi-talented, but they’ve shown us some major resilience too. They’ve lived through a global pandemic, put plans on hold, missed out on some of the most vital months of their high school years and yet their drive for a better tomorrow is more powerful than ever. The ten young people we profile this year possess a bright, positive spirit that’s reflective of the global current mood. Among them, you’ll find a coxswain, photographer, pianist, tennis players, two EMTs, a stage manager, quantum physics student, hockey player, published author, a teacher-in-the-making, costumer, singer/songwriter and an animal lover. Though their personalities are unique, the common thread is an incredible heart for service often rare among those so young. Read on to get a glimpse into their everyday lives as well as their future aspirations—we can’t wait to see what they do next.

I spent my summer… teaching tennis at the Country Club of New Canaan and spending time with family and friends.
A fun fact people would be surprised to learn about me is that… I’ve never been to the hospital.
My favorite books of all time are… The Hate U Give, And Then There Were None and all the books in the Harry Potter series.
I would love to discover… quick fixes for leukemia, breast cancer, or any type of cancer.
My role models include… my parents and younger sister, because they teach me so much. The biggest dilemma today’s teen faces is… dealing with social media, the pressures and anxiety it causes and not living in the moment. The nonprofit I’m most dedicated to is… Norwalk Grassroots tennis because I grew up there, and it’s something I’m very passionate about. My favorite family vacation is… Fourth of July weekend when we visit family friends in Massachusetts.
My favorite extracurriculars include… piano and voice. I’m also a year-round athlete who plays soccer, squash and tennis.
AUDREY MAGNUSEN
ST. LUKE’S SCHOOL, CLASS OF 2021
This fall I’m attending… Boston College
I’m thinking of majoring in… Economics, but I’m still undecided.
The greatest challenge I’ve ever faced was… struggling with mental health issues. I worked on this by finding mentors and friends to talk to, and making time to take care of my mental health.
My ideal job would be… doing something that involves travel and is related to the stock market.
A lesson I learned is... you shouldn’t feel ashamed to only do what you’re comfortable doing or what you can do in the moment.
I love many things about music including… playing the piano— I’ve played since I was 4. I also love singing and creating harmonies and different parts by myself with the piano.
My favorite subjects are… Mandarin and math
I give back to my community by… working at the Grassroots tennis program, a nonprofit organization that provides tennis instruction and help with schoolwork to kids who live in low-income housing.
My pre-performance ritual includes… blasting music in the car, then deep breaths to calm my nerves. I like to unwind by… taking long showers, reading a book and watching shows.
A mantra that I live by is… “Your mind is a powerful thing.” My dad taught me that our minds can influence us both positively and negatively.
In ten years, I’ll be… living in a city.

other people that I wanted done a certain way. Learning to delegate has helped my work because… in 911 EMS, teamwork is the only option and delegation is critical to the success of the crew chief. There are simply too many ongoing tasks to be managed by one person and multiple objectives that must be met simultaneously. This way of thinking is highly applicable to several aspects of the real-world. A lesson that I learned recently is... be kind to everyone, because they probably have something going on you don’t know about. My personal motto is… indulge in risk.
JACK JOHNSON THE HOTCHKISS SCHOOL, CLASS OF 2022
I spent my summer… working and volunteering as an EMT at both New Canaan EMS & North Canaan Ambulance Corps. I also interned for the New Canaan Office of Emergency Management and studied Chinese to try to advance past what I’m learning at school. I’m continuing to volunteer for an EMS-related nonprofit designing curriculum and teaching one-on-one and group tutoring sessions. I supervised prep work for the 2021—'22 school year for my leadership teams for the Hotchkiss Medical Society, the Hotchkiss Outing Club, the Hotchkiss STEM magazine and the Hotchkiss admissions office.

The nonprofit I’m most dedicated to is… New Canaan EMS. I have an opportunity to impact people’s lives in an incredibly intimate and tangible way. I can be a source of calm in situations that are chaotic and stressful. The greatest challenge I’ve ever faced is… learning to say no and delegate (they go hand-in-hand). For a long time, I found it difficult to give up opportunities that I had in exchange for others and I was hesitant to hand off tasks to
My favorite teacher is… my freshman world-history teacher, Mr. Seidenberg. The class was entirely discussion-based, and if nobody talked we would sit in silence for periods of up to five minutes. Somebody had to step up and we couldn’t count on a teacher to jump in and save the discussion.
My biggest pet peeve is... when people are unwilling to adapt to new circumstances. I think that it’s dangerous. The biggest dilemma today’s teen faces is… over-fixation on college instead of thinking about life as a whole. My favorite family vacation is… visiting my grandparents every year in Idaho.
learn that… I’m on the varsity diving team at Hotchkiss. Although running was my main sport, during sophomore year they were going to cut diving due to low numbers so I volunteered to be on the team. I like to unwind by…. FaceTiming with friends. I would love to cure… Covid-19
In college, I plan to study… social sciences that contribute to my understanding of unstable and complex disaster environments. At this point, I’m considering human geography, global security and political science.

I completed our school’s computer science curriculum this year, so this fall I get to do an independent study with a friend that focuses on quantum computing. The greatest challenge I’ve ever faced was… switching schools in 10th grade. My new school was more academically rigorous, so that took some adjusting. In addition, there weren’t many new sophomores. I’m very introverted, so this was a challenge.

My definition of changing the world involves… looking at the role ethics should play in technology and its use. I spent my summer… researching ethical programming with a focus on racial bias as it relates to artificial intelligence. People have been wrongly convicted because facial recognition software is often based primarily on white faces. This is a good intersection of what I care about and also something that’s needed in the world.

My favorite book of all time is… The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.
I would love to cure… homophobia.
I’m inspired by…. seeing others reach high and be successful.

A lesson I learned recently is that… while we all had to work remotely during COVID, the social aspect of school is invaluable and impossible to recreate in a remote environment.
My favorite food is… Indian food, especially naan and mattar paneer. My dad cooks a lot and his dishes are my favorite.
My biggest study hack is…. time-boxing. If I tell myself, “I want to get this done in the next hour,” I’m able to better focus and finish tasks.
The biggest dilemma today’s teen faces is…. spending too much time online. I had to relearn how to walk in the next two weeks and lost a major part of my tennis season. I overcame this trauma by journaling and later selfpublishing a book entitled Opening the Gate: A Journal of Healing From Trauma & Creating Positivity. I also worked on legislation with a local representative to better protect dogs and victims. A lesson I learned is that… being gracious to others is the best way to lead. This fall, I’m looking forward to… being a coxswain at The University of Wisconsin and being able to continue my academic and athletic career at such a high level. One of the things I love about rowing is… that my job is essentially talking. I steer and run the boat and I run the workouts and drills. I’ve always loved being a leader. A lesson I’ve learned is… to hold myself to a higher standard than anyone else will and always conduct myself with the utmost professionalism. My most successful study tips include… making unit summaries and study guides, then quizzing myself with these tools. One way I’ve given back to my community is by… starting the Mock Stock Challenge Program, which teaches investing and financial literacy to economically disadvantaged youth across America.
My personal motto is… complacency kills all progress. Every day I strive to be better and improve. As my coach once said, “Every day aim for 1 percent marginal gains.” That mantra, as well as the phrase, “Why not you?” has inspired my rowing team to push ourselves harder.

I spent my summer… working at the Wee Burn Beach Club snack bar.
Logged more than 1,000 service hours since 9th grade
I’ll always order… seafood. My go-to Father’s Day/birthday gift for my dad is to buy seafood at Rowayton Seafood Market and cook dinner. My biggest pet peeve is… inauthenticity. The worst problem today’s teen faces is… the climate crisis and dealing with social media. We see all this messaging about who and what we should believe from peers and others on social media, and this makes it hard for a lot of people to find their genuine selves. My guilty pleasure is… TikTok. There are really some gems on that app. In college, I’m likely to… double major in humanities/social sciences and STEM. They are absolutely not mutually exclusive.
through the latter. I love thinking on my feet and was looking for something else that allowed me to do so. I get to run a show four or five times a year, but I’m able to be an EMT every Friday night and change. It’s really fulfilling and exciting.

My favorite subject is… English, because of how you get the opportunity to pull from different subjects when examining issues. My pre-show and pre-work ritual involves… checking with every crew member to make sure they’re ready and see if there’s any sudden issues to fix or run with. This is true for EMT and theater.
My greatest challenge is….. dealing with ADHD. Sometimes it’s my greatest asset because it gives me the ability to think on my feet, which works well for a lot of things. With school it can be challenging, but I’ve gotten better working with and around it.
This fall, you can find me at… Colby College.
My advice on studying is to… complete homework assignments thoroughly, and don’t just phone them in. This will make studying for tests much easier and quicker.

My creative outlet is… photography The greatest challenge I’ve ever faced was….co-editing my school’s yearbook during the pandemic. While I was fortunate not to have to deal with extreme challenges that other people had to, I was forced to trust others, manage and organize a staff of people and learn to go with the flow. I managed this process by… coming up with new sections such as “quaran-teens” and going with an entirely new process to build and design the book. In past years, the

My secret talent is…. cat whispering. People would be surprised to learn that…. I’ve written a five-part choral piece, In These Woods, that our high school choir is going to sing this year. My favorite place to meet friends is ... the rose garden at Waveny Park. I would love to cure... our planet’s ecosystems. My definition of changing the world involves... expanding the use of nuclear energy.
WHY CLARA IS A TEEN TO WATCH NEW CANAAN HIGH SCHOOL, CLASS OF 2022
I would best describe myself as someone who… has a musical/arts side as well as an environmental science and engineering side. I’ve always been very creative and love spending time in nature. In eighth grade, I had an amazing science teacher who made me fall in love with science, and sophomore year I discovered engineering, the perfect way to help the world while using math, science and my creative side. A lesson I’ve learned was... not to let other people define my limits. When it comes to music, I love… singing. I’ve been doing it my whole life, am a member of the competitive NCHS Madrigal Ensemble, and I write songs to sing and play on the piano. Another creative outlet I have is... a love of costuming and being an avid seamstress. My grandmother taught me how to sew when I was young, and I’m
head of costumes for the NCHS theater department where I manage the budget, source period pieces, and help with alterations. The greatest challenge I’ve ever faced was when… our long-time high school theater director/ costume designer retired, leaving the theater program without a costume collection or a plan. I stepped up to lead the costume department and put together costumes for the season.
My role model is… my older sister, who taught me critical thinking. The non-profit I’m most dedicated to is… The New Canaan Nature Center. I’ve taken care of everything from chickens and goats to rabbits, chinchillas and ferrets over my seven years volunteering there.
I give back to the community by…. being a mammal care volunteer at the New Canaan Nature Center and doing a River Research Internship with Harbor Watch at Earthplace, a non-profit nature discovery and environmental learning center in Westport. In addition, I led a NCHS Science Team water sampling project at Bristow Bird Sanctuary in collaboration with Harbor Watch and the New Canaan Conservation Commission.
My favorite family vacation was… horseback riding on the beach in Portugal. I want to major in… engineering physics. My dream job would be… to develop a cold fusion reactor. These are currently impossible to create, but they would be able to provide sustainable energy to our entire population and would be a great alternative to natural gas and coal.
I spent my summer… continuing the research project I’m working on with Harbor Watch. I also attended a short introto-engineering program at the University of Maine to get a better idea of the scope of different engineering fields.
In ten years, I’ll be... designing a house out of stained translucent wood and solar glass windows.

The annual New Canaan CARES House Tour was a hybrid affair that celebrated being together in the healing air. Here, a peek at a select few of those spaces by tom c onnor
F
ew elixirs rival the great outdoors—the sun and stars, the open space and tranquility, the scent of gardens and meadows and woods —for reviving the spirit and
celebrating life among those we love. If any possible good has come from this Covid pandemic, it is these elements, along with gratitude for our family and friends and the shelter of our homes and land. Last May, the New Canaan CARES Hybrid House Tour kicked off just as the pandemic was waning but still a concern. As a result, ticket-holders were granted entry to several handsome local homes and outbuildings as well as tours of some magical properties—the pools, cabanas and outbuildings, the patios, fire pits and outdoor kitchens—where New Canaanites safely gather to enjoy nature and one another’s company. In the following pages, we have another chance to see how we might celebrate home life and the outdoors, but also to take part in the sense of community that led our neighbors to open their gates and doors for a worthy cause. Founded in the 1970s, New Canaan CARES serves local youth and families through programs that support and strengthen parenting skills, children’s development and healthy lifestyles. During the pandemic, the nonprofit’s primary focus has been on the mental health and stability of young people in the community. “It was one of the first in-person events coming out of Covid,” those who did tour the properties were absolutely effusive about being out among other people again and in safe spaces.” Here, we take the tour of a selection of the homes presented that day in May. One feature of this year’s tour was the placement of cabanas, exterior kitchens and bars, and outbuildings at a distance from the main house for when family members, having perhaps become use to time apart, needed an escape from family life in the main house. newcanaandarienmag.com

f you can’t travel to where palm trees sway in a balmy breeze, why not bring the palm trees to you?! Which is what this New Canaan family of outdoor lovers did in the spring of 2020. But first they updated their property from a backyard landscaped for active young children to one designed for equally-active teenagers and their friends, as well as for the parents and their friends. The first step was to have Robidoux Landscaping install a regulation-size bocce court on one side of the property. So popular has the game become that the family holds an annual party they call “Boccepalooza.” Robidoux also installed a pool designed by Bruce Eckerson of Eckerson Design Associates with a shallow sun-shelf perfect for sitting in a lounge chair. There’s also a built-in, winterized spa that gets year-round use; a bar at the far end of the pool a refrigerator, ice maker and kegerator; and, given the family’s love of music, 16 satellite poolside speakers. With the onset of the pandemic a year ago and most travel plans abruptly disrupted, Tom Robideau planted three 22’-high Christmas Palms from Key West around the pool, making the family feel as if they were on vacation anyway, and somewhere balmy and tropical. New England winters are too harsh for the Christmas palms to last and they are discarded at the end of the season, but who cares? Let us enjoy the great outdoors and one another’s company while we can.
The Chapel was newly designed as a guest quarters and gathering space that pays homage to the building’s roots as a former community house.
next door in 2008, they began the arduous process of purchasing and renovating the Chapel. “We feel indebted to show the town how old buildings can be repurposed and used in a fresh way,” Ainsley says, “and I think that the Ponus Ridge Chapel, so close to the street and such a prominent location, is a good example.” Under the direction of general contractor Ted Sihpol of Renaissance Partners, the roofline and details in the eaves were saved and restored, as was the majority of the original windows. The company also had replicas of original architectural details manufactured and installed throughout the building. Much of
has been such a great resource for everyone, and we feel it’s our duty to give back in a small way.” One small way was by opening the Chapel to townspeople for the CARES tour. Now, the couple is looking to offer use of the restored building, which they’re using as a guest house and temporary office, for other charitable events.

ne property of considerable interest to tourists was a small gem of a building many of us have passed for years, wondering what was inside. Thanks to the generosity of Brendan and Ainsely Hayes, however, this spring we were able to do just that. Built in 1911 as a neighborhood chapel and later as a community house for nearby residents, for decades he Ponus Ridge Chapel provided space for 4H classes, art and dance lessons, and local events. For the next 40 years, however, passersby witnessed its slow deterioration. But not long after the Hayes bought the 19th-century house
the mid-20th century furniture references the Chapel’s use as a community house. The rosewood and leather arm chairs belonged to the owner’s grandparents, while other elements were found in New England antique stores. Fully restored, the new old Chapel may soon see more visitors. t’s not everyday that New Canaan residents get to see a black barn that is New Englandsimple but also super-cool. “I thought that black would be fun and edgy and a cool look on the property,” says Krista Fox of Krista Fox Design, for whom this was the third time her firm has been represented on a CARES tour. What was fun for her was that “people on the tour got what we intended.” The main house is a 10,000-square-foot Dutch Colonial, yet this tall, active family of six wanted space to work out, entertain and watch movies as a family, especially with four children home during the pandemic. Fortunately, Schettino Architects, V&A Construction and Krista Fox Interiors had teamed up in 2019 to build this gem of a modern barn to serve—and anticipate—those needs. A handsome gray bluestone path led tour-goers from the house to the outbuilding. The striking, 1000-square-foot
structure features large-paned, aluminum-framed glass doors, rough cedar siding and a gabled aluminum roof that picks up lines from the main house. Inside, a custom-made bistro table of dark-stained oak is the central island on which to serve snacks and drinks. Those are easy to fix thanks to the bar, icemaker, two refrigerator drawers, a dishwasher and a stainless steel bar sink. There’s also room in the sleek but open space for a fully equipped gym and, after a meal or workout, a sitting area with sectional sofa and leather chaise lounge. The staircase leads to a cozy bedroom, bathroom and office or billiards room, depending on time and mood. Around the outer perimeter, Robidoux Contracting installed three handsome patios, a 10’x14’foot spa and an outdoor fireplace for additional relaxation time. The company’s projects have been featured on the CARES tours in the past, and he was happy to be on-
site this spring, along with his son Joe, for the tour. “I’m a New Canaan resident as well as a landscape contractor,” says Tom Robidoux. “New Canaan CARES has done a lot for the town and it was enjoyable to be there and talk to a lot of people.”
The modern black barn was built for open-air entertaining with a custom kitchenette, sitting area, gym and billards room. There’s even a bedroom upstairs for overnight guests.

225 TOP DENTISTS IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY
ur smiles say a lot about us. So finding the right dental professional is very important. We’re here to help with our 2021 guide to leading dental practitioners in Fairfield County. We turned to topDentists, a leading dental data research firm, for its inventory of elite practitioners. Its process is simple: TopDentists surveyors asked area specialists who are members of the American Dental Association to evaluate their peers. The criteria included experience, continuing education, patient care and use
of new technologies. Respondents were also asked to put aside personal and political bias and use only their knowledge of a peer’s work when evaluating nominees. Final selections were made after careful examination of credentials and past records with state academies and dental boards. So, whether or not you’ve put off your regular cleaning, your child needs braces or you’ve been thinking about whitening, take a look. The list that follows is sure to include a specialist you can count on. »

HOW IT’S DONE METHODOLOGY BEHIND THE TOP DENTISTS LIST This list is excerpted from the 2021 topDentists™ list, a database that includes listings of more than 220 dentists and specialists in the Fairfield County area. The list is based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dental professionals by their peers. The complete database is available at usatopdentists.com. For more information call 706-364-0853; write P.O. Box 970, Augusta, GA 30903; email info@usatopdentists.com
SELECTION PROCESS “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?” This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies and, of course, physical results. The nomination pool of dentists consists of all dentists listed online with the American Dental Association as well as dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peers’ work when evaluating the other nominees. Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received and status in various dental academies can play a factor in our decision. Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists. Of course, there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

It’s a community built on supportive partnerships, behind-the-scenes collaborations, and problem-solving and magic-making, and when faced with unprecedented challenges, this community proved how essential good design is to living life to the fullest. This year’s A-List competition is full of luxurious yet livable spaces that convey the caliber of talent that exists in this community. Our esteemed panel of judges had the very difficult task of determining the finalists from a truly impressive pool of submissions, and we thank our judges for giving their time and expertise to this year’s competition.

I
FAMILY AFFAIR
f the pandemic has done anything good, it has brought us puppies. People who weren't dog people before are now self proclaimed "dog people." Here, art director Venera Alexandrova ran into this crew of Rowaytonbased golden labs—Oriana, Talisker, Jameson and Boots. Turns out, they all live in one home together and are all related to each other. Talisker and Jameson are siblings and Boots is their mom. Oriana is a cousin to Talisker and Jamison. They love walks by the water, and this particular dock is their favorite spot for a rest. If you haven't seen them around, do you really live in Rowayton? newcanaandarienmag.com
