Please tell us about your role as Executive

My role is to develop a pastry standard that exceeds expectations, and to train not only my pastry team, but everyone around me to see and share that same vision. As a brand, I also oversee the pastry program at Weekapaug Inn. We are a unique department in that we facilitate everything from banquets, weddings, custom cakes, bread, chocolate showpieces, ice cream and custom amenities to plating all the desserts across six different outlets.

What are your favorite ingredients to incorporate this season?

Tamarind, raw honey, 90% dark chocolate, persimmons, black cherry and Dulcey chocolate.

My theory is knowledge. To continue to grow in the kitchen, you need to do countless research and learn something new each day. This not only keeps you on top of what is trending globally, but also keeps the passion alive. By reading books, following inspirational chefs, even taking classes to better yourself as a chef helps keep the flame burning. Find what makes your personal style ‘you’ and build from that to stand out.

What are some new additions you’d like to incorporate for the season?

My goal is to put a lot of love into Below Deck—our gelato shop is open during the summer season. I would like to use this as an opportunity to showcase pastries as well, including some sweet grab-and-go treats!

Where is your hometown, and what’s the coolest thing to see there?

St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Dog Mountain is a really unique spot that was created by Artist Stephen Huneck

Describe a favorite vacation. That’s a tough one! It would either be Las Vegas, Chicago or Portland, Maine. All had amazing food, phenomenal desserts,

What is your travel-related guilty pleasure?

Cliché….but always finding the local pastry shops. Seeing what the town or city is known for and trying that. I’m just a foodie at heart, and it’s one of my favorite things when traveling!

Pastry Chef Opens a Patisserie , Starts a Bread Program and Introduces Specialty Desserts

There’s a delicious smell wafting in the ocean air. Executive Pastry Chef Jessica Quiet has transformed Below Deck at Ocean House into a patisserie, a Europeanstyle pastry shop. The glass cases are filled with tempting desserts and the shelves are loaded with loaves of housemade breads. Gelato is still scooped—and now guests can watch the chef spin the base and blend in flavors.

Since joining Ocean House Collection in August 2023, the native Vermonter has been busy baking for Ocean House, Weekapaug Inn and Watch Hill Inn. Below Deck’s desserts reflect the from-scratch standards

Quiet believes in, along with her focus on seasonality, health, balanced flavors and contrasting textures. Donuts, éclairs, croissants and entremets, those beautiful individual layered cakes of sponge, mousses, crunchy wafers, glazes and ganache, will be among the bounty available for purchase.

Along with a new bread program, Chef Jessica creates seasonal desserts for all properties. She keeps an eye on allergens, diets and trends, preparing vegan and gluten-free desserts with antioxidant and vitamin-rich products like dark chocolate,

dark fruits and berries, citrus and sugar alternatives like raw honey, which has antibacterial properties.

“My secret ingredient is honey,” she says, “I especially love to smoke it for the desserts.” This season, she is using dark berry fruits, citrus and light florals such as hibiscus and violet. She infuses blackberries and a touch of juniper into cream to create a novel crème brulée. Her sugar profile is European, no sugar bombs, which is appreciated by the resorts’ well-traveled guests.

Chef Jessica likes her cuisine to be interactive. At Bistro, a caramelized sable (buttery French cookie) perches on the rim of the blackberry-juniper crème

brulée. Guests crack the sable in half and dip it into the silky custard and shattered caramelized sugar. Parker House rolls are served warm in a basket, and guests can pull them apart before pairing bites with “a journey” from savory Boursin to Vermont

maple butter. COAST’s five-star desserts feature Chef Jessica’s skills as a chocolatier and master of classic and contemporary techniques. She reveals how delicious vegan and gluten-free desserts can be, as she combines tamarind mousse, raw honeycomb toffee, cherry compote, and rich Valrhona chocolate into a work of edible art. Yes, soufflés are still available, but there’s always a selection of new things to try. She makes a set of seasonal desserts specifically for The Restaurant at Weekapaug Inn, which changes its tasting menu monthly. Working with a Providence distillery, her next creation will be a whisky cake. At Théa’s, the beachside Mediterranean restaurant at Ocean House for guests and members only, Chef Jessica makes traditional Greek

Baklava (Siropiasta) with alternating layers of nuts and Barr Hill raw honeysoaked crispy phyllo dough. At the Mexican themed Dalia, Sous Chef Pilar Garza has taken the lead on creating authentic desserts including: Carlota de Limon, Cajeta Cheesecake, and a Mexican Spiced Chocolate Torte.

At events, her chocolate desserts are showpieces. For a Narnia-themed party, she crafted a Chocolate Lion, Witch and Wardrobe. She’s baking and decorating beautiful wedding cakes and teaching classes at the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts (CWCA). Groups can take semi-private classes for four, and Chef Jessica is happy to share her love of desserts, teaching them “Anything they’ve always wanted to learn.”

Please tell us about your role as Executive Chef at Weekapug Inn. As the Executive Chef, I conceptualize and oversee the culinary program at Weekapaug Inn. From fine dining tasting menus, hand tossed pizzas on the beach, to BBQs and lobster boils on the lawn, I am involved in every aspect of the food at the Inn. Additionally, I am responsible for maintaining our beautiful chef’s garden. From weeding and tilling to watering and harvesting, you will find me in the garden each summer morning.

What are your favorite ingredients to incorporate this season?

Spring brings excitement to our kitchen. After a long winter of root vegetables, I am excited for our favorite first-of-the-year produce to pop up. Fiddleheads, morels, garlic scapes, asparagus, rhubarb, green strawberry, nettles and so much more.

Describe what makes the dining experience at Weekapaug Inn so special. The culinary program at the Inn is based on supporting local farmers and fisherman, and our cuisine does just that. Our always-rotating menu highlights what’s fresh in the moment.

When you have down time, what are your favorite things to do at the properties?

On my off-day, you will often find me in the water in front of the Inn digging clams. The Quonochontaug Pond is full of life, and I love staying true to Rhode Island roots and digging for quahogs in my off time. My dog Sophie loves to join me on my adventures.

Do you have any upcoming travel plans?

My wife Erinn and I are planning a trip to Manoir Hovey, a Relais & Châteaux Hotel in Quebec. About five-and-a-half hours from the Inn, it is a quick trip

across the border from where I grew up in Vermont. Quebec is beautiful, and the cuisine at Manoir Hovey looks phenomenal.

A sensational travel experience always includes…

Food. In order to immerse yourself in another culture, you must experience their cuisine. When traveling I always find the most authentic and local cuisine offered in that area to truly understand where I am. Food is the basis of my travel.

Where is your hometown, and what’s the coolest thing to see there?

I grew up in Montpelier, Vermont. The true beauty of Vermont is found outside, so take a hike through Hubbard Park, or visit one of the many surrounding mountains. Downtown is full of shops and restaurants, so grab a slice of pizza at Positive Pie (my first restaurant job), but make sure you save room for a Bragg Farm Maple Crème.

Describe a favorite vacation. My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Northern California. For the first half of our trip, we stayed in an airstream outside of Muir Woods. We went on incredible hikes and explored San Francisco. We finished the trip touring through Napa and Sonoma, where we visited many incredible vineyards and had the opportunity to dine at The French Laundry. Touring the caves at Schramsberg Vineyards was a highlight, and their Blanc de Blanc has quickly become our special occasion favorite.

What is your travel-related guilty pleasure?

Light beer at the local dive bar. Caviar and Champagne pair great with a Miller Lite and a jukebox!

CHEF’S GARDEN // Local Bounty

Taking advantage of the chef’s garden he created three years ago at Weekapaug Inn, Executive Chef Andrew Brooks enjoys cultivating his own ingredients. “It’s truly a chef’s garden where I’m the one feeding, weeding, watering and harvesting,” he says. “It’s a great way to teach the culinary team about the importance of growing your own food.”

He focuses on vegetables and herbs that grow well in the garden and can be used in multiple recipes. “We’re going to have a lot of different bell peppers and eggplants, as well as tomatoes like San Marzano, heirlooms and Sungold, which are my favorite little treat.” For herbs, they grow basil, parsley, chives, oregano, rosemary and tarragon.

Blueberry bushes from the garden are used to sweeten up the breakfast menu too. “I like to put blueberry pancakes on the kid’s menu during that short season, and they love it,” he says. “Last year I also planted raspberry canes. They take a while to get established, but we’ll have raspberries in a couple years.”

Chef Andrew finds inspiration in the garden and looks forward to creating new recipes with the ingredients. “For me as a chef, to be able to come to work and tend a garden and cook the food from it, is a dream come true. There’s genuine care behind the food.”

Executive Chef Keeps it Fresh

Local ingredients offer a micro-seasonal taste of coastal flavors

At the Weekapaug Inn, Executive Chef Andrew Brooks believes the best ingredients speak for themselves. Taking guests on a “culinary journey through the micro-seasons of coastal New England,” he and his team focus on everything fresh and local.

“We start every dish with quality ingredients, and it is important to respect the integrity and flavor of each component,” says Chef Andrew. “My philosophy is to focus on proper technique, and the flavors will stand tall.”

At The Restaurant, the tasting menus change monthly to take advantage of local produce and seafood. “Spring starts with fiddleheads, garlic scapes and ramps,” says Chef Andrew. “It’s a four-course menu, but there are extra surprises, a multi-part amuse-bouche, a bread course with local butter and Maine sea salt, a

pre-dessert and a takeaway. It’s a beautiful experience, and we like to make it fun and surprising.”

Each meal is finished off with a signature dessert, and the sommelier offers a special wine pairing. “We have a new sommelier and executive pastry chef who are very talented,” he adds. “Chef Jessica is creating truly

seasonal desserts. In May, there will be strawberry and rhubarb, in June, blueberries, and in July peaches.”

“Although people dine here to celebrate milestones,” Chef Andrew explains, “The Restaurant’s approach to fine dining is approachable and relaxed. It’s also about the amazing ambience and the service.”

Overlooking the Pond at The Inn, dining on The Deck is available seasonally.

“Last summer we noticed that our guests enjoyed the lighter lunch menu of New England classics like chowder, fried calamari, lobster rolls and sandwiches, but at dinner they wanted a different menu with more substantial choices,” says Chef Andrew. “We’ve added local grilled steaks, chops, salmon and swordfish. It’s more of a bistro style menu, which you can enjoy sitting outside overlooking the beautiful pond.”

THE WAY I TRAVEL

Outside, the infinity pool and patio ensconced by towering flora combine into a kind of oasis as guests lose themselves exploring, swimming, dining, and kicking back. Arriaga explains that Ocean House Collection added two cottages in 2023 and will add more in 2024, although some details are being kept hush-hush for a high-season reveal.

“The beauty of our cottages is that they are amazing extensions of Ocean House,” he says. “Yes, you're staying in this multimillion-dollar house just down the road, but you have access to all privileges of the hotel.”

SUITE AND LOVELY

With spring and summer 2024 shaping up as a key season to put concerns of recent years behind us definitively, guests are clamoring for the 20 Signature Suites in the main hotel.

Arriaga notes that all of these distinctive suites are fit for the most demanding traveler, sharing details on two that he has a special love for: The Penthouse Suite and The Morgan Suite .

The Great Fire of 1916

A powerful October storm caused devastating fire in Watch Hill

“It’s gone, it’s gone,” exclaimed Fire Chief Walter Nash, after staggering into the kitchen of his Napatree cottage, exhausted and heartbroken at the loss.

Watch Hill was quiet: the summer cottages, hotels, restaurants and shops boarded up for the winter. It was an unusually warm day for October. The weather forecast for October 18, 1916, called for a cold front to move through in the late afternoon, with temperatures dropping and gale-force winds out of the southeast.

Charles Fay had been associated with the new Watch Hill House for 11 years. Charlie wore many hats, the hotel’s liquor license was in his name, he served as manager, bouncer and caretaker. The hotel was his home.

As the sun was setting just after 5 p.m., Fay was headed to the post office on Bay Street under threatening skies, when he saw smoke and flames coming from the top floor of the east wing of the 150-room New Watch Hill House. His first thought was a lightning strike, recalling stories of the Atlantic House fire of 1872 caused by lightning.

SOUNDING THE ALARM

Fay sprinted to the Chapel, ringing the church bell and calling in the emergency. Fire Chief Walter Nash, whose grandfather had built the

original Watch Hill House, responded with 10 Watch Hill firefighters in their Buick firetruck loaded with 2,000 feet of hose, nozzles and fittings. Captain Walter Davis and his men from the Coast Guard Station also came to fight the blaze, along with soldiers from Fort Mansfield. Firefighters quickly laid hose hooking into fire hydrants but struggled to contain the fire, because of the Hill’s low water pressure.

By the time the apparatus arrived, wind was blowing a strong gale (47 to 54 miles per hour) from the southeast, fanning the flames, and causing the fire to spread rapidly, fully engulfing the side and roof of the hotel. Nash, seeing the extent of the fire, called for mutual aid assistance from Westerly, Stonington, Pawcatuck and Mystic fire departments.

By 6 p.m., the New Watch Hill House was gone. Fifty-mile-an-hour winds pushed the flames down the hill to the Hastings cottage, while Mrs. Hastings, recovering from a stroke there, required rescue by firefighters. Julia Bush’s cottage went up in flames next.

By 7 p.m., the Colonial House (former Atlantic) was gone, the firestorm sweeping all

the way down the hill to the harbor, setting the Columbia House ablaze, flames and sparks soaring over the fishing fleet and the Coast Guard boat on the main dock, and then out into the bay for a quarter mile. The Guardsmen powered up their lifeboat, towing all vessels to safety. The fire was out of control; eerily through the flames came a flock of geese.

FIGHTING THE FIRE

One hundred and fifty firefighters responded with aerial and hose apparatus, along with 3,000 feet of hose. Two engine streams and 10 hydrants’ streams were thrown. Mystic’s motor pumping engine drafting saltwater from the cove was the last line of defense defending the structures along Bay Street.

Nash now feared the worst, losing the whole village. Suddenly and miraculously, the storm— which started the conflagration—unleased a torrential downpour and extinguished the fire.

Charlie Fay, the Hastings, Julia Bush, the hotel proprietors, and the curiosity shop merchants lost everything. The total property loss was $250,000, equivalent to $7 million today. Eight firefighters were injured. While Mystic

responders Ernie Bliven and Luke McKone were refueling their pumper, petrol fumes exploded and set them on fire. Jumping into the harbor, they saved themselves, but suffered severe burns on the hands and face.

LOBBYING FOR CHANGE

Times had changed from the heady days when Watch Hill was known as the Queen of Atlantic seaside hotel resorts. The new Watch Hill House and Colonial House owners decided not to rebuild. The impact low water pressure had in fighting the fire was immediately addressed, and the Mystic pumper’s effectiveness evaluated. Through the lobbying efforts of the women from the Watch Hill Improvement Society, a motor pumper was purchased, and the first fire station was built at Watch Hill.

For couples looking for a bespoke wedding experience, Weekapaug Inn arranges one-of-a-kind events where the only guests on property are part of the celebration. Rather than walking into the lobby and seeing signs for competing wedding parties and meetings, it’s as if the Inn and its outbuildings were designed for only your wedding party. In fact, as the Weekapaug management and staff see it, nothing matters except for the bride and groom’s enjoyment and time together with family and friends. They enjoy creating a “house party atmosphere.”

“From Friday’s arrival until Sunday's departure, every square inch of the property is yours,” says Brian Honan, Group Director of Sales and Marketing for the Ocean House Collection.

That’s because of a special event buy-out program during the peak season: All 33 rooms, including four two-bedroom Signature Suites within the Inn, are exclusively reserved by the couple and their families for the duration of the weekend. With no other events booked during that time, there’s no one for the bride and groom to run into except family members and friends.

“It’s about realizing you know everybody on the property, and the staff is dedicated to you,” notes the Inn’s General Manager Daniel

Abrashoff, who adds that virtually every aspect of the weekend can be customized by the bride and groom. In close coordination with a dedicated event planner who takes charge of every detail, this could mean everything from keeping the pool open late and requesting lastminute changes to the menu to scheduling special outings and events.

Nothing is out of the question. For one fitness-oriented couple, their event planner organized a 5K run the morning of the wedding for themselves and all their guests. Another couple wanted family members and friends to join them for a polar plunge the morning after the wedding, and they happily ran down the beach en masse.

The Weekapaug Inn’s setting and history only add to the immersive quality of the wedding experience. The Inn occupies a peninsula dividing two salt ponds used for paddle sports and sailing. But it also serves as a kind of sanctuary from the rest of the world. Although the interior of the Inn was completely redecorated in 2012, it has retained a weathered, coastal New England charm that’s timeless.

People getting married at the Inn appreciate how it is down to earth—or sand—at nearly sea level with an authenticity that charms as it calms one of the most stressful occasions in a couple’s life.

This year, the Inn is celebrating its 125th anniversary. “What draws couples here is obviously the look and feel of the place, but also the sense of history,” notes Honan. “It’s almost as though the property becomes more a part of your celebration than your celebration is part of the event.”

“The Inn,” he adds, “is truly magical!”

Amore idyllic setting for a wedding than Weekapaug Inn is hard to imagine. Whether the ceremony takes place on the lawn, in a cathedral-like tent, or in the MeetingHouse with its floor-to-ceiling windows, it’s as if the shimmering light off the waters of Quonochontaug Pond and the Atlantic Ocean beyond confer an ancient blessing on the bride and groom.

Lauren Ayers’ parents had visited the Inn several times from their summer home in Mystic, Connecticut, and in her online search of venues, the Inn came up again and again as one of the most highly recommended sites in the area.

Yet it was perhaps inevitable that she and her fiance, Graeme

Calloway, be married here, on the water. Growing up, she spent summers in Mystic, and she and Graeme are rowers who met at a boat club in Boston. But they didn’t really connect until Graeme moved to Boston to get a PhD in English (He teaches and coaches rowing at a private boy’s school in Belmont). It was at her family’s summer place that, after a little prodding on Lauren’s part, he finally proposed.

“Mystic is one of the most special places to me,” she says, “and over the years, it has become a very special place for Graeme as well. Our ties to Mystic, and the proposal happening there, are actually why we sought out Weekapaug as our wedding venue.”

But Lauren had a concern about the venue all the same.

“I was a little nervous about how difficult the wedding was going to be for my parents,” she recalls. “My dad is quadriplegic, and my mom is a full-time caretaker. I just wanted them to have fun.”

From start to finish, the wedding went beyond anything the couple imagined. After rain (itself a blessing on wedding days!) moved the ceremony from the lawn to inside the MeetingHouse, the sun came out, the floor-toceiling glass walls were opened, and the space glittered in resplendent light.

For Lauren, the weekend also shone with togetherness.

“Having the whole Inn for three days as a space for our closest friends and family to enjoy was incredible,” she says. “We have many friends with young children and infants, and many live across the country now, so it was really special for them to have a weekend where everyone was brought together. Also, I have never seen my parents so relaxed, happy and having so much fun. And the food was beyond amazing, which was another one of my top priorities.”

Key to the event’s success, Lauren and Graeme say, was Kelsey Nerone, Catering and Sales Manager at Weekapaug Inn, who served as their dedicated venue coordinator.

“Kelsey was just amazing!” Lauren says, looking back. “She was our go-to person and coordinated everything for us—she even helped arrange a movie for the children during our ceremony and reception so that parents could enjoy themselves.”

Adds Graeme, “We couldn't believe that the whole space was sort of on pause for our wedding. Kelsey was fantastic, and the wait staff was extraordinarily helpful and invested.”

Behind the scenes, meanwhile, Lauren DiStefano, Director of Catering and Membership Events, and her staff collaborated with the couple and preferred wedding vendors on everything from managing event timelines and creating a food and beverage program to interfacing photographers, videographers, florists, hair, makeup and transportation.

Since last June, a number of the couple’s friends who stayed at the Inn and attended the ceremony and reception have said, “It’s the wedding against which we now compare all other weddings.”

Suite Offerings

Guest accommodations get a design update

When Weekapaug resident Lang Wheeler and Watch Hill resident Chuck Royce bought and restored the Inn in 2010, they focused on retaining the charm of the Inn and its history as an 1899 landmark. They transformed the Inn into a year-round destination for guests, while maintaining its unique character and creating a resource for the community.

To make the accommodations more spacious and up-to-date, in 2012 they hired prominent Providence interior designers Nancy Taylor and daughter, Courtney, to renovate the rooms and suites in the Inn proper, as well as two outbuildings constructed more recently for larger groups in mind.

In 2012, with Courtney as assistant designer, Nancy decorated the renovated Inn. The pre-existing 67 rooms were reduced to 33 in order to create four, luxurious, two-bedroom Signature Suites using Stickley and other fine furnishings from the original building along with fresh, high-end fabrics. Nancy also designed the Fenway Suites—the separate, one-bedroom accommodations overlooking the pool.

After her mother retired in 2018, Courtney took over the firm. When the Carriage House was built in 2020, she decorated the two, one-bedroom suites in navy, aqua blues and teals, as if colors from the ocean were netted and applied to the sofa and chair coverings and to the handsome tilework on the floor-toceiling fireplace surround.

“The tile is like an extension of how the fireplaces are clad in the main building,” says Courtney. “We wanted to bring the same aesthetic to the beautiful carriage house suites. It’s the kind of look you’d find at a seaside cottage you rented for the summer or visited your grandparents’ summer place.”

In mid-March of this year, Courtney completely refurbished the dining room and private Card Room in the Inn proper, as well as the elegant Signature Suites.

“This was really a dedication to upgrading the suites to keep them looking beautiful and luxurious,” notes Courtney. “They’re very popular and heavily used, showing some natural wear and age. I was able to come in and give them a fresh facelift.”

The 74-foot classic commuter yacht Aphrodite adds maritime star appeal to local waters

Brooklin Boat Yard is renowned for its ability to bring downtrodden boats back to life. In 2003, as the shipyard’s crew lifted the classic 74-foot commuter yacht Aphrodite out of the water, they knew the magnitude of the damage would take several years to fix.

The launch had been left to languish beneath the beating-hot sun of Florida, where so much water was seeping inside her hull that her bilge pumps were running 24 hours a day. Worms had eaten the boat’s bottom. Termites had chewed up the wood above the waterline. In what seemed like it might be a final gasp of despair, as Aphrodite had limped the last few miles from Florida toward the Maine shipyard to be hauled out for repairs, she’d blown out one of her engines.

And then, while she was high up in the slings of a supersize hoist called a Travelift, being moved onto land so repairs could begin, Aphrodite’s hull cracked like an egg.

“It was clear the Aphrodite’s time had come for a complete restoration,” as the shipyard put it. “She was a treasure, widely known and well worth preserving.”

Indeed, Aphrodite was and is a maritime treasure from the heyday of commuter yachts on Long Island Sound—which is why Charles M. “Chuck” Royce, owner of Ocean House, bought her and set about making her right.

Washington, New York, had built her for Wall Street financier John Hay “Jock” Whitney in 1937. He had used her not only to get back and forth to Manhattan, but also to entertain a who’s who of his time period, including Fred Astaire, Sir Laurence Olivier, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Nelson Rockefeller.

During World War II, Aphrodite served as a Coast Guard Auxiliary vessel up and down the Atlantic coast, including giving President Roosevelt a ride to and from his home on the Hudson River.

But then, a series of later owners allowed the boat to fall into disrepair. She was restored for the first time in the 1980s, but then became downtrodden again. In 2000, Royce purchased the yacht. After three years of formulating a plan, he commissioned Brooklin Boat Yard not only to restore her, but also to bring systems up to modern quality standards.

The work was so extensive, it took the shipyard 40,000 hours over two years to complete. The last original piece of wood was removed on September 2, 2004, and work began to rebuild it all with a whole new batch of

copper-riveted Philippine mahogany.

“They restored her using the same species of wood used in the original,” Capt. Kirk Reynolds told the marine magazine Soundings. “I’m pleased with the way we’ve managed to bring her into the 21st century with modern technology. There are electronic controls for the engine at the helm, and a cluster of gauges were made to look just like the original. It’s amazing to have something that looks so old function like a new boat.”

In October 2005, Aphrodite relaunched into her current life of cruising in and around the Watch Hill area and anchoring near Ocean House, where her appearance adds a touch of historical luster to the waterfront maritime charm. But don’t let those classic good looks fool you: She can also cut a wake. Her modern 1,000-horsepower Caterpillar engines allow her to hit a top speed of nearly 35 knots. A much quieter and more civilized speed for cocktail hour and sightseeing is closer to 15 knots, which allows for conversation either in the guest seating area or while standing near the helm, in the protected

shade of the pilothouse.

Cruising at that speed is often how Aphrodite is seen from shore, with her dark blue hull, beautifully varnished woodwork and New York Yacht Club burgee announcing her presence in high style. A sizable U.S. flag flies proudly off her transom, and it’s often the last thing onlookers see as she cruises into he distance.

The sight gives today’s fans of maritime history just as much of a reason as ever to admire this classic vessel’s uniquely American story.

This season, Ocean House has added a little fun to the wellness menu at the five-star Ocean & Harvest Spa—along with relaxing and restoring therapies such as CBD facials, body wraps and sound-bowl guided meditation. The Fitness Center will upgrade Technogym equipment this summer, and when the weather is fine, guests can head down to the resort’s private seashore with a fitness instructor for beach boot camp. Spa Director Samika Traboulay arranges entertaining activities for all age groups, such as belly dancing and Hawaiian hula. This is her second summer at Ocean House. Previously she was at the Waldorf Astoria spa in Atlanta. “Ocean & Harvest is distinct, even among other five-star spas, for its intimacy and sustainability ethos,” she says.

Sound Bowls

Sound Bowls are a form of sound therapy in which Tibetan singing bowls (originally used in Tibetan spiritual ceremonies) are struck or rubbed with a mallet, producing deep, resonating sounds that induce relaxation. Along with reducing stress, the sounds are

believed by practitioners to promote mental, emotional, spiritual, and even physical healing.

“Most of the people who participate in our classes feel like it helps them let go of a lot of tension and gives them mental peace, rather than viewing it as a physical therapy,” says Traboulay.

The evening classes, which require reservations through oceanhouseevents.com, are open to the public for up to eight people. In the spa’s Relaxation Room, guests stretch out on comfortable lounge chairs facing the 15-foot-high windows with views of the shore and ocean. The instructor sets out varioussized ancient Tibetan bowls, and she begins to make them “sing,” observing the bodies of the participants and how they react to the sound. “She’ll walk toward certain people, seeing where the chakras in the physical body need to be aligned,” says Traboulay, “And she’ll adjust the sound.”

The session ends with guided meditation, followed by the opportunity for guests to share their responses to the session. The sounds can evoke memories and emotions, and sometimes tears, yet the sharing experience bonds the group. “It’s really positive,” says Traboulay. “It becomes a bit like friend therapy.”

Fitness Center

Guests can start the day in the movement studio for complimentary daily group Pilates (8 a.m.) and yoga (9 a.m.), which moves out of the studio and onto the terrace, weather permitting. The pool room has a 20-meter saltwater lap pool and ocean view. At press time, Traboulay was looking forward to renovating the gym, and she’s excited about upgrading the “high, high-end” TechnoGym equipment.

The Spa

The Spa has added CBD treatments to the spring and summer menu. CBD facials and CBD body wraps focus on regenerating skin tone and rebuilding collagen barriers. The popular Wellness Warrior massage uses oil infused with full-spectrum CBD and arnica, lidocaine and cryotherapy to help sore and tired muscles feel good again.

Fun Outlook

“Our guests really embraced the fun classes,” says Traboulay. “It’s an easy way to approach and embrace wellness.” What could be more fun than dancing on the beach? Lessons in belly dancing and Hawaiian hula were popular when Traboulay introduced them last summer, and she’s excited to introduce more guests to the concept.

“It is a chance to learn about another culture,” she says. The classes are family friendly for all ages and body types. “I love the concept of wellness,” Traboulay says. “It’s about making people feel better.”

Checking in to the Watch Hill Inn just got easier. This spring and summer, guests will be welcomed directly at Watch Hill Inn’s front desk on Bay Street with streamlined check-in and prompt and easy access to on-site parking. There’s also a fresh design for the third-floor lobby lounge, providing another inviting place to gather.

“We’ve greatly improved the guest experience,” says Watch Hill Inn Manager Shannan Plew, who previously oversaw guest relations at Ocean House. “Our guests can come directly here, without checking in at Ocean House first and then driving down to the Inn.”

Now that the front desk faces Bay Street, the third-floor lobby lounge has been redesigned with a new coastal library feel, with periwinkle-blue walls and bookcases filled with books and board games. The lounge is outfitted with a self-service coffee bar and the refrigerator is stocked with bottled water and juice. Each morning, the lobby lounge opens at 7 a.m., serving home-baked pastries from Ocean House. At midday, snacks are offered, and in the late afternoon, charcuterie and wine are available, and for the kids, cookies and milk.

Guests can mingle and relax in the lobby lounge or enjoy drinks and snacks on the sun deck or their own terrace.

The family-oriented Inn has an accessible price point, large rooms and a casual, lived-in feel, with unbeatable sunset views over the Narragansett Bay. The historic inn was built in 1845 on Bay Street in downtown Watch Hill and expanded over the years to offer 21 residential suites with fully equipped kitchens, washerdryers, gas-burning fireplaces, private terraces, as well as town or bay views. The gem of the larger accommodations is the Admiral Suite, in the historic part of the building. At 4,000 square feet, the fourbedroom, four-and-a-half bath space sleeps nine to 10. The sunshine-filled open livingdining-kitchen and wet bar area features expansive views of the bay and opens to a 30-foot-wide sundeck. This room is ready for a family celebration.

Watch Hill Inn attracts a lot of repeat visitors, and the new on-site check-in process, easy parking, and redesigned lobby lounge are likely to increase that.

When the word “staging” is part of the wedding vision, Ocean House brings ideas to life

Some couples rely on the team at Ocean House to plan a great deal of their wedding. The team’s vast experience with creating memorable events—everything from catering to decorating—can be a blessing for brides and grooms who prefer to articulate the general experience they want to have, then let someone else handle all the details.

Carly Puccio and Jake Rosen were decidedly not one of those

couples. Carly, in particular, had ideas so specific that everything from the couple’s vows to the dresses to the ambience at their reception turned out to be a one-of-a-kind experience for the couple and the Ocean House team alike.

“It was so beautiful,” Carly says of their wedding over Labor Day weekend in 2023, absolutely thrilled with how everything turned out.

The pair met in 2012, during high school in central Massachusetts. They both attended colleges in Beantown—Carly at Boston University and Jake at Northeastern University. After graduation, they moved in together. He went on to work in medical device sales, while she’s building a career as a beauty and fashion influencer. Jake proposed during the first snowstorm of 2022.

“We went for a walk along the Boston Seaport skyline,” Carly says. “There's a little cobblestone pathway with a skyline view. It’s really beautiful at night, and it had just snowed, so it was lovely. He said I was his best friend and he couldn’t imagine a day without me. He got down on one knee, and he had a photographer there to capture the shot. Both our families were waiting nearby in a private room to celebrate that night.”

Carly had always wanted to get married near the ocean, and her father had attended a wedding at Ocean House. “He sent me the link,” she says. “It was exactly what I wanted.”

They welcomed their guests off-site on Friday, September 1, at a winery. On Saturday, September 2, they spent the morning privately exchanging their vows.“We wanted them to be intimate and private for one another,” Carly says. “For about an hour and a half, we sat on our balcony at Ocean House and drank coffee and read our vows to each other. We had our

photographer and videographer there, so we could remember everything.”

The couple then separated to prepare for the ceremony with bridesmaids and groomsmen. Carly wore a custom wedding gown by designer Galia Lahav. “I went for a very timeless satin, A-line, strapless with a slit to give it a little bit of spice,” Carly says. “And I wore my mom’s veil.”

The ceremony was on the South Lawn, next to the croquet course. “We filled our cocktail bar with cascading hydrangeas,” Carly says. “We wanted that perfect photo opp with the ocean as a backdrop.”

After that came dinner for 130 guests on the terrace. A Caesar salad with parmesan crisps and clams casino was followed by a surfand-turf combo of fillets and sea scallops.

“Then we opened up those doors into the ballroom, and we wanted to create a club atmosphere with a dance floor and our band,” Carly says. “We put together these seating arrangements surrounding the dance floor. Guests could be sitting on lounge chairs and couches if they didn’t want to be near the dance floor. It was very different from what they usually do, but Ocean House pulled it off.”

For that moment, Carly had a custom afterparty dress. The inspiration was a Valentino dress she’d seen actress Eva Herzigová wear at the Venice Film Festival.

“I had it made in New York at Undone by Kate,” she says. “We went through the whole process together, from inspiration to muslin fitting to picking our fabrics together and then going through multiple drafts of the dress.”

Every last detail was precisely the way Carly had imagined it.
