So you have a company with a great

Your Brand You absolutely must have a distinct brand for your company starting with a great logo - nothing dull, boring and typical, but one that jumps out and grabs your attention. Make sure it’s memorable and says something about what your company actually does. Consider using an original graphic instead of just lettering with the name of your company. Remember, this logo should go on EVERY piece of material you send out and on your business cards. It represents you, so it may be worth spending the money on a professional to be sure you make a great first impression. Once you’ve got your logo, ask for opinions. I put mine on Facebook and got great suggestions and feedback. Turns out my logo required just a couple of minor tweaks to make it really pop and that’s what you want. You need people to remember you and your company. A good place to start for ideas is Google images. Skimming through pictures will give you some great ideas and there are even free graphics that you can download. If you’re skilled enough with design, you can customize it to your company; but, again, if you aren’t, hire someone to do this for you. This doesn’t have to be expensive. Try Fiverr for some great designers who will often do what you want for as little as $5.

Your Website Is your calling card and will most likely the first impression people will have of you and your business so you must make sure it is very well constructed. There are many free templates out there you can use, but the trick is to make it not look like a template. It must look professional and original. If you can’t do it yourself, there are a number of ways to get someone else to do it for you and once again, it doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive. Check out services like www. fiverr.com. If you hire someone local, make sure they are affordable. Make sure to use an email capture page so you can get a list of potential clients. Does your website explain, concisely, what your business has to offer or is it just a bunch of text that really doesn’t say anything at all? Consider getting some unbiased opinions. Don’t just ask friends and family that will tell you what you want to hear. Is everything grammatically correct? Are there typos? Don’t make the mistake of proofreading your copy yourself because you already know what it’s supposed to say and it is too easy to miss typos and grammatical errors. Get another set of eyes, or two, to read everything on your website. Is everything on your website verifiable and legitimate? Let me give you an example: A guy communicated with me about writing some web content for his site. I said “of course!” He told me he owned a PR firm out of NYC with big name clients.

6

Your Website When I went to his site I was totally shocked. It was an obvious template, and a bad one at that. It was filled with typos and grammatical errors. It had a BBB logo at the bottom, but when I went to the BBB website, the company wasn’t even listed. His verbiage was duplicated in several places right next to each other! The same sentence ended one paragraph and started the next. Basically the website was a lot of fluff with no substance and I highly doubt any of those big name clients depicted on his site even know they are being used. Is the phone number real? How come when I call this supposedly big name NYC PR firm, I get voice mail every time. There’s always a promise of calling back in five minutes, yet no phone call ever comes. The point of this is you have to establish legitimacy and trust if you’re going to have clients, let alone repeat clients. When someone comes to your website make sure you get their email address. There are lots of ways to collect these as almost every website you visit makes you enter an email address to go any further. Building this email list is critical because it gives you a built in client base and the ability to send automated emails at regular intervals, even while you’re sleeping. Everyone wants to be at the top of Google; but, unless you are an SEO expert or have the money to hire one (and it’s expensive) it’s just not that simple. Optimizing your website for SEO is not something I know how to do. I will let someone else handle that, but in the meantime there are other things you should be doing. All websites have photos. Art is your friend because it’s appealing to the eye. Hire a professional photographer to do photos for you, not photos from your smart phone. Make certain the resolution is 72 dpi for web and at least 300 dpi for print.

Marketing & Getting Clients So now that your website is perfect you still need clients. So how do you accomplish that? Well, you have the email list you built and you can send emails to those clients reminding them you’re there, why they need you, what specials you’re offering, etc. Don’t overdo it because then you’ll just be annoying, and you’ll get yourself deleted, or sent to the spam folder. Use these emails wisely and creatively. This is where it helps to have a professional craft these for you. Once you have about a dozen of them written, you can rotate them – again, use these strategically. Another good investment is a professionally written press release. Unless you’re an expert wordsmith and know what gets the press’s attention, hire someone to write one. Know your target market and then spread the word by getting that release out there. Find blogs that are relevant to the service you’re selling and make a comment with a link back to your site. Write a true, honest comment, not just “come visit my site,” or it will never be posted. The best advice is focus on what you are good at; delegate the rest of it. If you don’t, you’re only going to waste a lot of time and time is the one thing you can never get back. Money invested in having a professional do something is worth its weight in gold. Any investment that produces a return is priceless. Once you’ve gotten everything in place, your job will be much easier. In fact, you might not have to do anything at all except collect your cash.
