Transparency is an important parameter for many architectural buildings. The need for a total or a large percentage of a transparent envelope often contradicts with other conditions that the building needs to fulfill. Those can be a demand for high thermal insulation or sound insulation, UV protection, uniform light distribution or less light transmission. Nowadays new materials are being used and studied, which give a great variety and offer new possibilities to the architect or the designer who wants to achieve transparency in his building. Transparent polymers is a strong candidate that has the possibilites to change glass as the only transparent material for curtain walls. For years, glass has satisfy designer’s demands to have transparent facade with low U-value, long life span and non flammable material. However, designers start to improve polymers properties that threatened the position of glass. The main advantages of using polymers instead of glass are that they are less brittle than glass , less weight than glass, and the ultimate strength of polymers can be higher than glass. There will be four materials that will be discussed in this manual, which are ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene), PC (polycarbonate), PET (polyesters), PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) or also known as acrylic. These four materials give alternatives to glass facade in terms of aesthetic point of view and its properties. The aim of this manual is to give designing directions for alternatives to glazing. The case studies that were chosen have a characteristic performance in one or more categories and therefore are interesting and are being analysed. Glazing systems were not being included in this manual, due to the fact that they are already quite known between architects and designers and they do not perform any variations in the installation methods and procedures.
