B-Professional 1- Program General Aims: The joint master’s program “Heritage Conservation and site Management” is mutually implemented by the Brandenburg University of Technology in Cottbus and Helwan University. The program is focused on: 1.1 Transferring knowledge and methodologies necessary for the administration and management of archaeological sites, which include the following academic fields: conservation strategies and methods, strategic heritage management and planning, visitor management, presentation and interpretation, as well as general leadership skills and good knowledge of the tourist sector. The variety of these subjects will endow graduates with the specific knowledge and multidisciplinary skills required in the significance assessment, management and safeguarding of archaeological sites.

2- Graduate Attributes: The graduate (after successful completion of the master degree years of study) must be capable of: 2.1 Identifying and theoretically conceptualizing the economic, social, cultural and political processes that are related to the cultural heritage of a nation, a landscape or an ethnic group. 2.2 Understanding the specific problems of different cultural contexts, in order to assess the specific cultural and natural values of heritage. 2.3 Developing concepts for the safeguarding of heritage sites and to place them in a supra-regional or international context. 3-Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) for the Whole Program: 3.1- Knowledge and Understanding By the end of this program the graduate should be able to: 1. Identify the fundamentals of “Heritage Conservation and Site Management”. 2. Apply the fundamentals of “Research Methodology”. 3. Recognize the basics of “Archaeology”. 4. Identify the different elements related to heritage site management. 5. Describe the most appropriate methods of dealing with tourists and the provision of touristic services. 6. Define the most important topics related to the maintenance and conservation of monuments. 7. Recognize the laws and legislation, financial and administrative systems related to heritage site management. 3.2-Intellectual Skills 2
By the end of this program the graduate should be able to: 1. Connect between the modern administrative systems and management of human resources, and the preservation of heritage sites. 2. Apply modern marketing concepts, event management and touristic services management within the heritage sites. 3. Analyze human and natural impact on heritage sites. 3.3- Practical Skills By the end of this program the graduate should be able to: 1. Manage work groups. 2. Solve problems related to the work in the field of heritage sites. 3. Use modern technologies related to methods of explanation and interpretation for tourists. 3.4- General Skills By the end of this program the graduate should be able to: 1. Efficiently manage his time. 2. Tactfully communicate with the visitors and apply the appropriate protocols related to dealing with them. 4- Program Academic Reference Standards (ARS) The program adopted special academic reference standards. These are: 1. Knowledge and Understanding The HCSM Master’s program graduates should demonstrate acquired knowledge and understanding as follows: 1.1Recognize the basic and fundamental theories of “Archaeology” and “Tourism”. 1.2 Identify the scientific development in the fields of Tourism and Heritage Site Management. 1.3 Recognize the fundamentals of “Research Methodology”. 3
1.4 Define the laws and legislation, as well as the financial and administrative systems related to “Conservation” and “Heritage Site Management”. 1.5 Recognize the fundamentals of quality assurance system related to the fields of “Conservation” and “Heritage Site Management”. 1.6Identify the aspects of the process of human resource management in “Heritage Sites” and recall the most important topics related to “Heritage Sites Marketing” and IT applications related to heritage managmenet.
2. Intellectual Skills Graduates of HCSM Master’s program should be able to: 2.1 Analyze and evaluate data related to the fields of “Conservation” and “Heritage Site Management”, and set guidelines for solving problems. 2.2 Solve specialized problems without having access to some of the required data. 2.3 Link different knowledge fields to solve professional problems. 2.4 Perform a research study or a scientific methodological study on a research problem. 2.5 Evaluate probable risks of the professional practices in the fields of “Conservation” and “Heritage Site Management”. 2.6. Make strategies to develop performance in the fields of “Conservation” and “Heritage Site Management”. 2.7. Make professional decisions in various professional contexts.
3. 8-Admission Requirements: The programme will enrol annually up to 25 students, consisting of 9 Egyptian students, 9 German students and 7 third country students. Joint admission criteria will be developed in accordance with the specific regulations at each partner university. The following eligibility criteria are proposed:  Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Archaeology, Management, Hospitality and Tourism, Development Studies, History, or other relevant study areas to the content of the Master programme;  Proof of English language proficiency in accordance with the specific regulations which are in force at each partner university: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 79 points (internet-based), 213 points (computer-based), 550 points (paper- based) or higher; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with an overall band score of 6.5 or higher (with no individual component less than 6.0); Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) with grade B or higher; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with grade B or higher. Students will send their applications to BTU Cottbus. The selection of candidates will be made by the Scientific Board in accordance with the joint admission criteria. Candidates must obtain the approval of acceptance from both institutions. 9-Progression and Completion Requirements: In the first year of the project, academics from the BTU Cottbus and Helwan University will cooperate closely in the elaboration of an integrated curriculum for the joint programme. The proposed structure is described below and could be further modified, as a result of the consultations between the partner institutions. 9
In the first semester, students will complete courses separately at their home universities (BTU Cottbus or Helwan University), achieving a total of 30 credit points (ECTS). These courses should provide participants with basic knowledge and skills required in the identification of cultural heritage resources and the management of heritage sites. The following core modules are proposed: Introduction to Site Conservation and Management, Project Management, Heritage Legislation, Cultural Anthropology, Urban Dynamics, Heritage and Development. In the second semester, all students will complete courses totalling 18 credit points (ECTS) and a study project representing 12 credit points (ECTS) at BTU Cottbus. The following study modules are proposed: Heritage Management and Management Plans, Architectural Conservation, Architectural Survey and Documentation, Cultural Landscapes, Intercultural Competence, Public Relations and Media. Students will select any three of the six modules offered. The interdisciplinary study project will enable students to develop innovative management concepts in the context of specific heritage sites. German language courses will be offered in addition. In the third semester, all students will complete courses totalling 18 credit points (ECTS) and a study project representing 12 credit points (ECTS) at Helwan University. The following study modules are proposed: Heritage Tourism, Archaeological Field Research and Site Conservation, Community Participation Strategies in Heritage Management, Risk Preparedness at Heritage Sites, Heritage Interpretation, and Fundraising for Heritage. Students will select any three of the six modules offered. The study project will be developed and conducted in cooperation with the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo and will have a strong practical dimension. Arabic language courses will be offered in addition.
