PRESIDENT MITMINGER'S MESSAGE TO THE 1973 GRADUATES A yearbook is a volume normally retained by graduates for many years as a memento of times past, of friendships formed, of social events, and of links with one's alma mater. I tried to consider a suitable context for . the President's message which would be lasting and meaningful. I will try to write about times past, attempt to predict times to come and end on a quotation that is poignant and profound. I hope you will read it. In the past academic year we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Mohawk College and its heritage. We came to realize that this College was founded on traditions and reputations of your predece-sors who may now be your parents. They paved the way in the formation of the programs and courses, and in the establishment of community acceptance. They were the guinea pigs on whom we experimented to establish relevant education. In the years to come you will return to this book to reminisce on those years of pleasure and sorrow, joy and involvement, study and relaxation, to remember your friends and those moments of truth when you learned a great deal about yourself. On the basis of the way our society is moving we can predict that you will be back within the College or University for part-time courses many times Don't lose the ability to study, it is an important skill.

Since all of you will be entering the world of work permit me to quote from the famous Lebanese philosopher poet Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet". "Always you have been told that work is a curse and labour a misfortune. But I say to you that when you work you fulfil a part of earth's furthest dream, assigned to you when that dream was born, And in keeping yourself with labour you are in truth loving life, And to love life through . labour is to be intimate with life's inmost secret. But if you in your pain call birth an affliction and the support of the flesh a curse written upon your brow, then I answer that naught but the sweat of your brow shall wash away that which is written. You have been told also that life is darkness, and in your weariness you echo what was said by the weary. And I say that life is indeed darkness save when there is urge, And all urge is blind save when there is knowledge, And all knowledge is vain save when there is work, And all work is empty save when there is love; And when you work with love you bind yourself to yourself, and to one another, and to God." President.

What words can I use to sum up what was done in the past twelve months? Looking back, I know it was a great year all round. For me, it was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life. I wish the 1973 graduates success in their future endeavours and to those students who will be returning next year- good luck! I ~ant to take this opportunity to acknowledge the support and efforts of a number of people who made this year so great. First, there is Sue Prestedge and the forty odd students who made up the staff of pub-nites and movie-nites. There were a lot of good times had by many. Next there is Aileen Hesselden, Don Cummings and their competent staff who edited and managed our college newspaper each week. The Phoenix certainly came a long way this year. Then there are the other members of the Executive Committee without whose support much would not be accomplished. My thanks and appreciation are extended to Sue Crookes, Kathy Hohner and Dave Roberts. Last, but certainly not least, is Sonia DeBruyn and her staff who were responsible for putting this yearbook together. It is my beliefe that all the people who worked with the Students' Association this year will find future reward for their efforts. I trust the new executive will work closely with the students of Mohawk College to produce a year that wnl exceed this one. Good luck to the new council members in their endeavours. J. Walter Elliott, President of S.A.M. Thanks to all. 1972-73

stelco THE STEEL COMPANY OF CANADA, LIMITED

A little longer in the oven makes a lot of clean air!

Stelco's new battery of 83 coke ovens includes 29 units over and above those that will actually be required to meet projected requirements for coke production. Having these extra 29 ovens permits us to extend the coking time cycle for all of our 347 ovens. A longer coking time at lower temperature results in complete conversion of coal to coke, thereby drastically reducing the level of volatile atmospheric emissions . This way, we can keep the air a lot cleaner during the pushing of coke out of the ovens. The

extra ovens, a de-dusting system, an additional collec.ting main, a quenching system of baffles and recirculating water and a new cooling tower are all air and water quality control features of this new installation. In total, they constitute an expenditure of $ 1 2 million part of an estimated $75 million which Stelco expects to spend by 1 976 in order to fulfill the voluntary commitment it has given to the Government of Ontario to do everything reasonably possible to meet the latter's environmental quality control time tables and deadlines.
