Revitalizing the Dairy Industry!

Organized in 1984.

MDA Mission Statement: the Missouri Dairy Association, an organization of dairy producers, is committed to promote, protect and enhance the Missouri dairy industry by working to insure the profitability of dairy producers. What MDA has achieved: • Sponsored the Heart of America Dairy Expo since 2013 in Springfield. Registration is free for dairy producers for the 5th Expo January 19-21, 2017. • Annually co-sponsors the 5 Missouri Dairy Profit Seminars with the University of Missouri. The 2017 seminars are February 20-24, 2017. • Passed landmark legislation with the Missouri Dairy Revitalization Act of 2015 (House Bill 259). The only state to do so. • Secured $2.5 million in funding for the Revitalization Act in 2016. But, Governor Jay Nixon has withheld all but $200,000 of the funding. • Testified in opposition to raising property taxes in 2016. The General Assembly dismissed the Missouri Tax Commission’s 5% increase proposal. • Sponsored for 21 years the Supreme Junior Dairy Champion Award at Missouri’s local fairs with dairy cow competition. • Supported Amendment 1, the Missouri Farming Rights Amendment, in 2014, which passed statewide. • Supports the 4-H Dairy Judging Team and the 4-H Dairy Youth Camp. • Supports full funding for EQIP with MDA representation on the NRCS State Technical Committee and the EQIP subcommittee. • Supported the University of Missouri’s 3 Dairy Grazing Conferences. • Supported the Trans-Pacific Trade Partnership (TPP) negotiations in 2013. • Successfully got cheese added back into Missouri’s WIC Food Program in October 2012. Cheese had been removed as a budget cutting measure. PAGE 10

• Annually sponsors a June Dairy Month celebration with a farm tour. • Hosts Missouri’s Congressional delegation and state legislative leaders during legislative day at the Missouri State Fair. • Manages the Gerken Dairy Center milk parlor at the Missouri State Fair. • Supported the “Dairy Security Act” in the 2012 Farm Bill. • Opposed the U.S. Department of Labor’s proposed rule in 2012 dealing with children who work in agriculture vocations. The rule was withdrawn. • Joined Missouri Farmers Care, formed in 2010, to oppose the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in its efforts to negatively influence livestock production in Missouri. • Opposed the Prop B ballot initiative in 2011 regulating dog breeding. • Supported legislative efforts to improve the Prop B ballot initiative passed in 2011. This led to a bipartisan fix later. • Opposed the Missouri Department of Conservation’s reintroduction of elk to Missouri in 2010. • Requested USDA Secretary Vilsack to increase dairy price supports in 2010 due to depressed dairy prices which the Secretary later denied. • Supported efforts in 2010 to get the Missouri Clean Air Commission to support efforts to slow down EPA’s move to regulate Green House emissions from livestock operations. • Supported successful efforts to appeal the Arrow Rock case to the Western District Court of Appeals in 2010. This decision reversed an earlier court decision to further regulate livestock operation construction. • Supported the State Dairy Stabilization Act in 2009 (Senate Bill 254 and House Bill 658) to provide tax credits to Missouri’s dairy producers. The Act was never implemented due to anti tax credit Senators. • Supported dairy milking parlor grants in the State Budget in 2008 which were later stripped out in a budget conference committee. • Supported the Missouri Food and Farm Preservation Act in 2007 to deal with County Health Ordinances. The Act never came up for a vote. • We represent all sizes of dairies and regardless of who markets your milk. • We supported the successful vote to confirm the Missouri parks and soils tax.

It’s been proven, nuisance flies disrupt cattle comfort and spread disease, which can affect production. It has also been proven that ClariFly Larvicide can help stop flies before they become breeding, biting adults. When you add ClariFly Larvicide to feed, it passes through cattle to affect

“While one stable fly does not cause significant damage, 50–100 of these blood-sucking pests occurring together with 500 horn flies can cause a substantial daily loss of blood. This common livestock pest situation can result in a loss of 10–20% in milk production.” - Kaufman, P. E. and Weeks, E. N. I. “Stable Fly (Dog Fly) Control”. Holstein USA: Tim Ewing thanked members for opening their doors to him. He has enjoyed helping everyone. Introduced Holstein USA representative, Trevor Bodry, who works with the Enlight program at Brattleboro. Trevor gave the state of the association report and explained genomic testing. Mentioned that several of Holstein USA’s rates will increase as of Feb. 1st. National dues have also increased to $40. University of Missouri Extension: Dr. Scott Poock spoke on behalf of extension. He is excited to announce that MU is forming a search committee to replace our state Dairy Extension Specialist (Dr. Barry Steevens position). It has been many years and they are excited to see this in the budget. There are many trials being conducted at Foremost farm. There will be a trial starting utilizing the heifers that were housed at the Southwest Center and moved to Foremost. This trial is not yet finalized at this time. The university is taking a team of students to the Dairy Challenge this year. The dairy club on campus has also increased in numbers over past years. Dairy Shrine: Ray Schooley talked about the Dairy Shrine. It is $50 to become a member and includes all breeds leaders and youths. He has applications and money raised goes to fund $50,000 in scholarships that are awarded. Dairy Hall of Honors: Kate Geppert said the annual banquet is scheduled for Friday, February,5th at 11:30 am at Eckles Hall in Columbia, MO. They will begin with lunch and then have the awards ceremony. Dr. Marshall has retired and Joe Horner has taken over as Executive Secretary. Those receiving awards are Ted Probert - Meritorious Service, CEO Prairie Farms – Leadership, Keith Dixon – Breeder, Jerry King & WH Hood – Pioneer. Award nominations are due Nov. 1st It is a simple form that requires 3 letters of recommendation. Form received from Joe Horner. State Fair: Amy Jo Estes reported that all facility upgrades are being addressed and will be completed by fair time. She is working with state 4-H and FFA on the dairy youth show. They will be separate shows this coming year so youth may count them towards their projects. She is working on money for increased premiums. The focus now is on the youth, so that is where any increase in funds will go, followed by out of state exhibitors. A matching funding program for in and out of state exhibitors is also being worked on. Any updates to the rules need to occur now as the book will be published March 1st. Judges are also being secured and will be published in the premium book. An All-Breeds Committee has been formed and they are planning on meeting today to help with some of the decisions. Janice Perry commented that she liked the email updates. Eric Greitens, Republican MO Governor candidate spoke briefly to the membership. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Show and Futurity: Becky Durst reported that since there is no Spring Show they recommend moving the All-Missouri awards to the state fair or have a point show at Ozark Empire Fair (in place of Spring Show). They also recommend moving the Futurity show to the state fair as well. This would eliminate the cost of the meal and finding a judge. The futurity would be shown after the Sr. 2 and before Jr. 3 classes. Jason Ewing moved that the AllMissouri show be the Missouri State Fair. Janice Ling 2nd. Passes. Larry Wright moved to have the Futurity show after the 2-Year old class at State Fair and have them eligible for Champion. Jason Ewing 2nd. Passes. AmyJo was on hand for some entry clarification. Animals will still need to be entered in the fair. You will be eligible to show in your respective class for your premium in addition to the futurity class. Animal must be entered in regular age class to receive All-Missouri and then shown additional in Futurity class to receive futurity funds. There will be no separate premiums from the State Fair for futurity, but animal may show in both classes if desire. The Southern National Spring Show is scheduled for April 9, 2016 in Stillwater, OK and the judge is Chris Lahmers. Futurity entries for 2018 are due February 1, 2016. Sale Committee: Jason Ewing reported on our 3rd Convention sale. Thanked Larry, Jodi and Tim for all of their work on the sale. Also thanked our sponsors who advertised in the catalog, which eliminated a lot of our costs. The sale averaged on 21 lots of live animals, semen, choices, and embryos: $2308. Seventeen head of live cattle averaged $2538. Next year they are looking to max out at 25 lots. Next year selections will be from in and out of state consignors. This year they cut back on advertising, but continued with CowBuyer (4 lots sold online with many contenders). Might start the sale a little earlier next year. Jay Moreland mentioned that MDA is grumbling because of the $2500 that they gave us for the sale meal. Jay wondered about the possibility of including other breeds in our sale? Mike Wilson stated that he thinks it needs to remain a Holstein sale. Janice Ling wondered who would receive the commission on the other breeds? Larry Wright stated that the other breeds can use our facilities and equipments: microphones, cow buyer, venue, etc. after we finish with our sale. But the sales should remain separate. A general consensus of the group was to keep the sales separate. The committee also asked the group if a meal was needed. Some discussion indicated that a meal wasn’t really necessary. The committee will think about what to do for next year. Website: Jodi Wright discussed how the website was outdated in looks and coding. A committee of combined adults and youth has been formed to receive opinions and gain a direction for the look and functionality of the new site. Hope to have a new site this year. Suggestions are welcome. Awards: Roy Parsons reported that for the MO Distinguished Service and Master Breeder awards currently require 3 letters of recommendation. The committee suggests changing this to one (1) letter of recommendation to encourage nominations. The committee also recommends that the association PAGE 21

limit the award to two (2) recipients per year, but they can use their discretion. Awards do not have to be given every year. Roy moved to accept those who have been currently nominated: SueAnn Steele, Jodi Wright, Jerry King, Robert & Janice Perry; with award selections made by anonymous committee. Janice Ling 2nd. Passes. Roy moves to reduce award supporting nomination letters from 3 to 1. Brad Groves 2nd. Passes. Juniors: Lora Wright reported that she was re-elected President of the Missouri Holstein Jr Association. There were 19 members and adults present. Discussed National Convention this year in New York. The junior All-MO points will remain the same (just subtract Spring Show). State Fair 20 points and District Show 16 points. Arkansas juniors will now have their own district show (4-State Dairy Days) to be utilized for Jr All-MO Points. They are planning on a calf raffle or 50/50 drawing for a fundraiser this year at state fair. If anyone is interested in donating please contact Shannon. Looking to do another food booth at a local sale this year. Please contact Shannon with any ideas. Futurity participants will receive $25. They will pay $100 to sponsor Cow Camp and pay $500 towards the stipend for the Junior Advisor. Jrs still have a few 100 anniversary t-shirts available. New officers are: President – Lora Wright, Vice President – Dalton Smith; Secretary – Katie Wantland; Reporters: Blake Wright, Sophia Geppert, Kylie Scrivner and Julie Griffin. History: John Underwood reported that they suggested donating some of the remaining 100th Anniversary History Books to university libraries. John is willing to pay the postage on these donations over a 2 – 3 year span. John accumulated over 50 boxes of reference material when he was writing the History Book. He would like to see if the Executive Committee will contact College of the Ozarks and see if they would like to receive the donation of all of his material. He would like to keep it together and send it somewhere it will be used and appreciated. Jay Moreland will contact College of the Ozarks. Nominating: Al Brandt gave the nominations for officers as President-Jay Moreland, Vice President- Brad Groves, Secretary-Treasurer- Michelle Eilenstine, and Director-At-Large-Tommy Scrivner. OLD BUSINESS: Spring Show: Jay Moreland reported that the board of directions in October voted to cancel the Spring Show for 2016. This does not mean it can’t come back at a future time when it is deemed appropriate. NEW BUSINESS: By-Law Change: Article II – Membership. Section 6: Add “Membership dues will be due and payable postmarked March 15 of the membership year. Following March 15 members not in good standing will be removed from Holstein USA member rolls until such time as state membership has been paid. Membership dues postmarked April 15 or later will require an additional $10.00 late fee per adult member. Memberships received after June 1 will not qualify for Association sponsored awards.” (Section 6 pertains to adult member dues. Therefore this addition applies to adult memberships only.
