It’s been proven, nuisance flies disrupt cattle comfort and spread disease, which can affect production. It has also been proven that ClariFly Larvicide can help stop flies before they become breeding, biting adults. When you add ClariFly Larvicide to feed, it passes through cattle to affect

larval development in the manure where flies lay their eggs. Use ClariFly Larvicide as part of an IPM program that includes manure sanitation along with Bite Free™ Stable Fly Traps to help manage flies on your dairy operation. Learn more at centralflycontrol.com or call 800.347.8272. ®

“While one stable fly does not cause significant damage, 50–100 of these blood-sucking pests occurring together with 500 horn flies can cause a substantial daily loss of blood. This common livestock pest situation can result in a loss of 10–20% in milk production.” - Kaufman, P. E. and Weeks, E. N. I. “Stable Fly (Dog Fly) Control”. The Entomology and Nematology Department, Florida Cooperative Extension Service, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida. First published: December 1997. Revised: August 2012. “Stable flies feed from one to three times per day depending on the climatic conditions” - Anthony, Craig, “Confined Livestock Feeding Facilities: Control of Stable Flies and House Flies”. Extension Extra, South Dakota State Cooperative Extension Service, College Of Agriculture & Biological Sciences, South Dakota State University. April, 2005. Always read and follow label instructions. DAIRY EXPO SPEAKERS Vallery Eisenmann Vallery Eisenmann graduated with a BS degree in Marketing from Northwest Missouri State University. She has been in the insurance industry for 24 years. The first 13 years she spent as a Farm Bureau agent focusing on the Ag and commercial marketplace in central Iowa. She has also worked with independent agencies as an Ag specialist. The last several years has been spent working with insurance companies with product development, growing the distribution channel and training, coaching agents in product, field underwriting and best practices. Vallery still resides in central Iowa with her husband David, who is a professor in Ag and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University. Together they run a small herd of Katahdin sheep and manage his family’s century farm in north Iowa. Rich Bennek Rich Bennek has 40 years of experience working in and serving the dairy industry. With an education, training, and field experience in ruminant nutrition he served the industry through the feed industry for 20 years. When he learned of the work being done on corn silage digestibility he took the leap to the seed industry and brought his nutritional experience with him. For the past twenty years he’s had the opportunity to introduce bm3 BMR corn silage technology to dairy producers across the country that has helped them feed a high forage ration for the benefit of their cows and whole farm profitability. Max F. Hawkins Dr. Max Hawkins grew up in Illinois on a grain and livestock farm. He completed an undergraduate degree at Western Illinois University and an MS and PhD at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Hawkins has worked for the Illinois Cooperative Extension Service, coached livestock judging teams, and taught at Morehead State University and California Polytechnic State University. He has worked for Wayne Feeds and Micron Bio-Systems. Since 2001 Dr. Hawkins has been with Alltech’s Mycotoxin Management Team, providing technical support directly to customers and sales staff to improve livestock health and performance. He provides the livestock industry with up to date information on mycotoxin risk on a worldwide basis.

Kansas THE PREMIER DAIRY FRONTIER

Kansas offers a DRY CLIMATE, AFFORDABLE LAND, ABUNDANT FEED and AVAILABLE WATER RIGHTS. Existing feed yards are also available that would make excellent heifer development facilities.

We are proud of the

Kansas dairy industry. Kansas is one of the fastest growing dairy regions in the U.S. in terms of milk production, due to a variety of factors that make the state a prime location for dairy operations. Land availability, a ready supply of feed and an ideal climate provide a good foundation for dairy growth and heifer development, and the efforts being made toward proactive water policies enhance the viability of future dairy farm expansion.

The 2016 district show was held in Louisburg in conjunction with the county fair. They plan on continuing to hold show there in 2017. Holstein USA: Tim Ewing thanked members for opening their doors to him. He has enjoyed helping everyone. Tim stated that Basic ID cattle numbers have tripled this past year. He also explained the sale on Transfers that the association had in the fall. University of Missouri Extension: The extension report was given by the team of Ted Probert, Dr. Scott Poock and Reagan Bluel. Ted discussed youth events and schedules for Cow Camp (end of May), Dairy Judging Camp (week of July 17th), and the state Dairy Judging Team (placed 5th in Louisville – headed to Expo next fall). Dr. Scott Poock announced the new Director of Extension, Dr. Marshall Stewart. Dr. Stewart is going to host some ‘Meet & Greets’ in several communities around the state. If you are able to attend he would welcome your ideas. Reagan Bluel spoke on the new extension program ‘Women in Dairy’ and the commented on the 2017 schedule and workshop held at Expo. They will begin with lunch and then have the awards ceremony. Those receiving awards are Dr. Al Kertz - Meritorious Service, Ted Barlows (Hiland), & Jodi Wright – Leadership, Ron Entlicher – Breeder, and Lonnie Weatherly – Pioneer. Award nominations are due Nov. 1st It is a simple form that requires 3 letters of recommendation. Form located on MHA website or from Jodi or Joe Horner. State Fair: Amy Jo Estes was not able to attend and Jodi read her report. Breeders had heard that they were not allowed to bring straw or shavings next year. Amy said not to worry about that, that rule does not apply COMMITTEE REPORTS: Show and Futurity: Becky Durst reported the committee suggests that the All-MO awards remain with a one-day show at State Fair and that Futurity also continue at State Fair. Becky gave a Futurity summary. 2016 – 119 head entered (7 breeders) and 8 head showed at State Fair (2 jrs, 5 breeders). 2017- 90 head (9 breeders); 2018 – 31 head (8 breeders). Becky Durst will pursue finding a dairy photographer for State Fair. Discussed that there is no one to host the exhibitor meal at state fair anymore. Jason Ewing moves that Larry Wright and Rick King be in charge of organizing some type of exhibitor meal. Al Brand 2nd, motion passes. The Southern National Spring Show is scheduled for April 3-8, 2017 in Stillwater, OK. Futurity entries for 2019 are due February 1, 2017. Sale Committee: Jason Ewing reported on our 4th Convention sale. The sale grossed about the same as last year. Lot 1 was the high seller at $7100 and sold to Canada. Thanked Larry, Jodi and Tim for all of their work on the sale. Also thanked our sponsors who advertised in the catalog, which eliminated a lot of our costs. The sale averaged $2100 on 29 total lots of live animals, choices, and embryos. Eighteen head of live lots averaged $2286. They continued with CowBuyer and sold 4 lots online with several contenders. Jason commented that previously members wanted cattle that fit all price ranges. However, the committee wasn’t as pleased with how all of the cattle sold, so they feel they will be more selective next year with the consignments providing a high quality sale. The committee recommends hosting the sale again. Brad Groves moves and Nelson Hostetler 2nd hosting sale again. Motion passes. They thanked College of the Ozarks for their embryo donation for the juniors. This was a successful fundraiser for the youth and they look to continue this in the future. Website: Jodi Wright reported that the committee has met and made site suggestions. Samples have been distributed to committee and hope to have a new site this year. Suggestions are welcome. Awards: Roy Parsons reported that the committee has taken a hard look at the awards offered. They recommend suspending the awarding of the Master Breeder and Retired Breeder awards at this time siting lack of interest. The committee recommends keeping the Distinguished Service Award. Application along with 1 letter of recommendation need to be send to MO Holstein Assoc. Secretary by November 1st. Roy moved to accept those who have been currently nominated: SueAnn Steele, Jodi Wright, Jerry King, Robert & Janice Perry; with award selections made by anonymous committee. Cow of the Year Award: The committee does not recommend any changes to the current rules. The rules currently in place were correctly interpreted by the executive committee regarding a question of eligibility of an animal this year. It was discussed whether to allow online voting for COY award in addition to paper ballots. Jason Ewing moves to allow online voting for Cow of the year. Janice Ling 2nd. Jodi Wright addressed some of the concerns and issues members thought might be a problem. Motion passes. It was also discussed if nominations should be allowed to be made in the Pulsator newsletter as well as the Mid-States Holstein News. Costs of advertising, distribution rates, and other aspects were discussed. The Mid-States has a larger circulation rate but some members would be willing to nominate cattle if the cost wasn’t so high. Janice Ling moved we allow COY nominations in either the MidStates or the Pulsator. Brad Groves 2nd. Motion passes. PAGE 21
