larval development in the manure where flies lay their eggs. Use ClariFly Larvicide as part of an IPM program that includes manure sanitation along with Bite Free™ Stable Fly Traps to help manage flies on your dairy operation. Learn more at centralflycontrol.com or call 800.347.8272. ®

“While one stable fly does not cause significant damage, 50–100 of these blood-sucking pests occurring together with 500 horn flies can cause a substantial daily loss of blood. This common livestock pest situation can result in a loss of 10–20% in milk production.” - Kaufman, P. E. and Weeks, E. N. I. “Stable Fly (Dog Fly) Control”. The Entomology and Nematology Department, Florida Cooperative Extension Service, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida. First published: December 1997. Revised: August 2012. “Stable flies feed from one to three times per day depending on the climatic conditions” - Anthony, Craig, “Confined Livestock Feeding Facilities: Control of Stable Flies and House Flies”. Extension Extra, South Dakota State Cooperative Extension Service, College Of Agriculture & Biological Sciences, South Dakota State University. April, 2005. Always read and follow label instructions. Missouri Holstein Association - 102nd Annual Membership Meeting

Saturday, January 20, 2018, Springfield, MO, 10:00 AM, Oasis Hotel Brad Groves, President, called the meeting to order. There were approximately 35 members and several guests present. Harlan Borman offered a prayer before the business meeting for all in attendance. Brad recognized special guest Randy Gross, South Dakota, National Holstein USA president 2005 – 2007. Brad asks membership to review printed minutes form 2016. Jodi notes one correction on the All-MO list. The Dry 3 & 4 Yr Old should read: AM – Radine Sanchez Morgan-ET, Univ of MO & Res AM – U-MO Gold Chip Passion-ET, Univ of MO. Harlan moves to approve the corrected 2016-17 minutes, Alfred Brandt 2nd. Passes. Jodi Wright handed out the financial report and gave the review. SueAnn Steele moved to approve the financial report. Jenny Manes 2nd, motion passes. DISTRICT, STATE, AND NATIONAL REPORTS: Northwest: No report given. Southeast: No report given. West Central: Jay Moreland reported that their District show was at the Cass County Fair in 2017 and will be again July 18, 2018 in Pleasant Hill. Ten exhibitors had twenty head. Members that participated were Morelands, Iman’s, Chamberlins, and Morgans. Grand Champion was shown by Cassandra Iman. Southwest: Nelson Hostetler reported they had good attendance at their District meeting that was in Republic. They are moving it around the district. District show was at State Fair. Had a great turnout for the 2017 Field Day that was held at College of the Ozarks. He thanked everyone who attended. South Central: Tommy Scrivner reported that the 2017 District show was with the Douglas County Fair. Grand was owned by Tom Durst. Grand of the Jr Show was Kylie Scrivner and Premier Breeder and Exhibitor was Scribble Farms (Scrivners). There were 10 farms and 28 head that participated. Northeast: Alfred Brandt reported that a group of members have hosted the Northeast MO (NEMO) Holstein Sale again in October. The 2017 district show was held in Louisburg in conjunction with the county fair. The 2018 NE District show is planned for Columbia with a date to be announced. Holstein USA: Tim Ewing thanked members for opening their doors to him. He has enjoyed helping everyone. Tim stated that there were lots of great cattle that have come out of the NEMO sale the past few years. If members need to order ear tags they need to call Holstein Customer service directly (not Tim) as to avoid any errors or order online. NEW POLICY: If you are selling embryos – you can’t transfer the embryos or flush after the calves are born. Embryos must be transferred at time of sale. The Region 7 BAA high list of herds was just released and it is dominated by Missouri members, congratulations! Holstein USA had a record year in 2017 for registrations. There is also a one-hour promotion of the Holstein and dairy industry on February 8th at 9AM CST on RFD-TV. It will be a one hour show and features Missouri breeders, Cla-Cor Farms of Easton, MO. University of Missouri Extension: Karla Deaver announced the outstanding dairy judging year that both Missouri 4-H and Missouri FFA experienced this year. Missouri 4-H placed 3rd at World Dairy Expo earning them the opportunity to participate in the International Dairy Judging competition June 2018. Missouri FFA (Monett) also placed 3rd at the National FFA Convention earning them the same opportunity. This presents a unique situation where Missouri has two teams attending the same International competition. The state should be very proud of the dairy youth that are representing them. The 4-H team is doing several things throughout the convention to help raise funds for their trip. Both teams are seeking funds and have 501©3 status. Dr. Scott Poock reported on the MU Dairy. They have 180 Holsteins, 20 Guernseys and a sister to the high selling polled heifer a couple years ago is on the current polled list. Ted discussed youth events: Cow Camp (end of May) and Dairy Judging Camp. He is encouraged that cow camp is still bursting at the seams and it began in 1997. He has active grazing programs in the state and there are still opportunities to incorporate grazing. There also are a lot of opportunities with cattle housing as a number of dairymen have installed compost pack barns. Reagan Bluel reminded members of the Land Grant Compact, students must fill out the FAFSA form, but then kids can go to University for Free. Compact is due Feb. 1st. Reagan also reminded people about the Women in Dairy program. It is beginning its third year with new programming and the hopes to attend World Dairy Expo in the fall. Women in Dairy also just started a Facebook page, so please ‘like’ the page for information on upcoming programming. Dairy Shrine: Ray Schooley talked about the Dairy Shrine. It is $50 to become a member and includes all breeds leaders and youths. The shrine recognizes outstanding youth and adults. Scholarship funds are supported with memberships. Dairy Hall of Honors: Kate Geppert said the annual banquet is scheduled for Friday, February 2 at 11:30 am on the MU campus. Those receiving awards are Gene Wiseman, State Milk Board & Stacy Dohle - Meritorious Service, Chris Hackman (Central Dairy) – Leadership, John Denbigh – Breeder, and C.H. Eckles & Kenny Lenz – Pioneer. Award nominations are due Nov. 1st It is a simple form that requires 3 letters of recommendation. Form located on MHA website or from Jodi or Joe Horner. State Fair: Amy Jo Estes reported that that they are working on offering a Supreme Heifer class for the youth division this next year. They are also working on commercial heifer classes. The details have not been finalized but will probably be based on weight. Looking at having this show on Thursday. Director Chris Chin is also working at getting statements to be sent with premium checks. The fair book is being finalized and the two junior judges have been contacted. Tommy Scrivner asked for clarification on the vendor form. The form says that it is to be sent to Jefferson City. He received one 6 times to be filled out when it was already on file in Jeff City. Amy Jo will look into that. The form needs to be filled out every year. Production awards have to be mailed ahead of the fair. They can’t be entered online. They must be mailed or faxed. There is a Facebook Exhibitor page – if you are not a member please ‘like’ page. There is a great deal of relevant fair information that is shared through that site. Parking – still has not been sorted out. Mike Wilson commented that he attended the MN State Fair and if you had cattle at the fair you were not charged for parking. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Show and Futurity: Ryan Bilyeu reported the committee suggests that the All-MO awards remain with a one-day show at State Fair and that Futurity also continue at State Fair. There was some discussion about moving All-MO Show to Ozark Empire Fair. Larry Wright commented that there are very few cattle at OEF last year. It was suggested to keep at state fair. There is currently no state fair photographer. Futurity awards have been a choice between a director’s chair and a semen certificate from Select Sires. ABS still sponsors junior chair. There was a question regarding Futurity rules: 1. ET Calves that are born out of state. The rules state ‘born in Missouri and bred by a member of MHA.’ What if an ET calf is born outside of Missouri, but still owned by MHA member? There was discussion. Janice Ling moved to drop words “born in MO’ out of the Futurity rules. Larry Wright 2nd. Discussion. Motion Passes.

PAGE 20

2. What if one partner is out of state on an animal? Jodi commented that all other rules regarding membership, All-MO, and other awards are that ‘as long as one member of the partnership is a Missouri Holstein member, then the animal qualifies as a Missouri animal. 3. The committee wondered about having the Futurity form online and to be able to pay entries online. Jodi explained that that would be a lot of work and web programming. Members can print off their PCDart heifer report and indicate the heifers they are entering if they don’t want to actually write them all out. The Southern National Spring Show is scheduled for April 9-14, 2018 in Stillwater, OK, judge is Brian Killroy, WI. Futurity entries for 2020 are due February 1, 2018. Sale Committee: Jason Ewing reported on our 5th Convention sale. The sale grossed quite a bit less than last year, $48,250.00. The gloomy dairy outlook for 2018 kept sale prices low even though we had excellent quality. Lot 2 ended up being the high seller at $4000 and sold to College of the Ozarks. Thanked Larry, Jodi and Tim for all of their work on the sale. Also thanked our sponsors who advertised in the catalog, which eliminated a lot of our costs. The sale averaged $1787 on 27 total lots of live animals, choices, and embryos. Twenty four head of live lots averaged $1862. The committee continued with CowBuyer and sold 3 lots online with 36 registered bidders, 21 online and 9 that were active. Jason states that we need high quality photos before it gets cold or snows. Committee might take fewer lots next year, they welcome suggestions. Thank you to Robthom Farm for the junior embryo donations. We would like quality photos and video clips so that we can do more advertising. However, they have to be quality with clean animals and clean / neat backgrounds. Need a volunteer who would want to work with video. The committee recommends hosting the sale again. Website: Jodi Wright reported that the committee has met and made site suggestions. Jodi hopes to have new site this year. Awards: Roy Parsons reported that the committee will formulate a basic nomination form this year. Roy is also going to clean up the rules of the Distinguished member application. The committee feels that the Dairy Hall of Honors should be encouraged to have a booth here at the Expo to showcase the winners. Also that there should be some recognition of the outstanding dairy judging teams that Missouri has had over the years at the Dairy Hall. They also felt it would be good for the committee to do nominations for the dairy hall. Juniors: Lora Wright reported that she was re-elected President of the Missouri Holstein Junior Association. There were several members and adults attend the meeting. The junior All-MO points will remain the same – coming from state fair and district shows. The committee did recommend that the Jr. All-MO awards follow the June 1st transfer deadline that National Holstein uses for junior shows. This will be the requirement for juniors to receive AllMO awards. State Fair 20 points and District Show 16 points. Juniors competing in the Futurity will continue to receive $25 from the Jr Association. The juniors also changed their state Distinguished Junior forms to match the age qualifications of the national forms. Princess and Miss rules were changed that an individual may only run one time for each honor. If there is no one running, then the current Princess or Miss may continue for another year without any additional scholarship. Discussed National Convention this year in Michigan. The Juniors have voted to increase the amount of money competing kids receive towards registration fees. They will now split $1000 among the competing kids with each junior receiving a minimum of $100. We also received donations of extra funds that will be divided among the youth competing. Fundraising ideas were discussed. The juniors were very grateful to have embryos donated from Robthom Farm. Voted to continue donating $100 to 4-H Cow Camp and pay $500 towards the stipend for the Junior Advisor. New officers are: President: Lora Wright; Vp: Blake Wright; Secretary: Dalton Smith; Reporters: Roper Voskamp - SW; Adeline Dickerson - NW; Sophie Geppert - NE; Amanda Brooks - SC; Case Melzer – WC; Historian-Lora Wright History: John Underwood reported that there was nothing of note to discuss. Finance Report: Alfred Brandt reported that the finance committee prepared a rough budget. As presented below with a net gain of $1520. Harlan appreciated the financial reports throughout the year. Harlan moved and Brad Groves 2nd to accept budget. Passes.

OLD BUSINESS: Cow of the Year: Jodi explained the voting process this year included online as well as mail in ballots. Online voting had a total of 14 votes (2 unqualified) 12 usable + 8 mail-in ballots = 20 total ballots. Discussion about the lack of participation in the Cow of the Year contest. Janice Ling thought it was more a problem of nominations rather than voting. She felt there would be more votes if there were more nominations. Janice Ling moves to encourage the awards committee to nominate (or encourage breeders) to nominate cattle for Cow of the Year. Becky Durst 2nd. Motion passes. Continue with the online voting. Pulsator Advertising: Brad Groves reported that the second year of ad placement in the Pulsator Newsletter netted $241 (less than last year, due to one issue going out with first class postage). Brad encourages members to participate. Any content suggestions for future issues to Jodi. Several new features were included this year and were well-received: membership list, production leaders, full state show results, bull summaries, state classification results, and member articles.
