Junior News State Convention Summary:

The Juniors had a great fund-raising event at state convention this year. Beginning with a beautiful ribbon quilt made by Gail Groves, Billings, and her mother. Gail took many ribbons donated by members from around the state. Some of the ribbons dated back to the 1960’s and were from local, state, national and even Canadian shows. A syndicate was formed and the quilt sold for $1250 and will be hung in the tractor museum at the College of the Ozarks. It really was to beautiful not to go on display! Special THANKS to Gail Groves for creating & those donating to Syndicate:

Select Sires Mid-America Toecky Registered Holsteins Robthom Farm Mike Hackman Roy Parsons Cody Meyer Jason Ewing Jay Moreland Ted & Pam Probert Larry & Jodi Wright Gary Estes Dean Dohle Frank & Julie McLean Robert & Janice Perry Ray Schooley Matt Day During the State Convention Sale the College of the Ozarks and Boyd Brothers donated 10 embryos to the youth as well. There were several different matings to chose from and these embryos fetched a total of $750 for the youth. There were also items donated that sold in the fun auction on Saturday. The juniors would like to give everyone that donated or bid on items at the convention a huge THANK YOU! Would also like to extend our thanks to everyone who helps throughout the year and the continued support of the Junior Association. 2017 Junior Officer Team: (Top) Reporters: Taylor Groves, Blake Wright; VP - Dalton Smith; Secretary-Katie Wantland; President & Historian: Lora Wright; Reporters: Sophia Geppert & Zach Scrivner 2017 Princess - Lora Wright 2017 Miss - Kylie Scrivner 2016 Jr. All-MO Awards

PENNY WARS

We will be participating in Penny Wars again at the National Convention in Bellevue, WA this summer. We would love to be able to bring “Penny,” the traveling stuffed cow, back to Missouri. The state that has the largest amount of pennies in their jar gets to claim Penny. If you would like to write a check or give money not in penny form that is OK. We will convert them and use them however it will help us keep Penny. Give pennies to Shannon anytime up to convention and she will deposit them for you. Thanks for your efforts!

T-SHIRTS Juniors still have a few

Dairy Judging Camp!!

July 17 - 19 Are you interested in learning how to judge dairy cattle and defend your placings with oral reasons? Missouri 4-H hosts an annual 3 day dairy judging camp in Southwest Missouri. Participants judge many different breeds: Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Guernsey and Ayrshire. They have the opportunity to also view different management styles as they travel to various farms. Business Meeting - Missouri Holstein Association

January 20-21, 2017 saw the 101st Annual meeting of the Missouri Holstein Association. Quite an accomplishment for any organization! Here is a short recap of association business conducted at the annual meeting: •

• •

• • • •

• • • •

Hospitality Room - We once again had a hospitality room hosted by Ed Wittorff. It was a little difficult to navigate, but we all had a wonderful time. It is really wonderful that our association really does enjoy each other’s company as they catch up on the past years events. This is a tradition we hope to continue again next year! Tim Ewing, Holstein USA, talked about association programs and that our National Director for Region 7 will be open this year. Scott Poock shared there is a new Director of Extension: Marshall Stewart. He is doing some meet and greets around the state. Women in Dairy program is going well. At the MU Campus - 66 in dairy production class, 30 in dairy club, they participated in the Dairy Challenge at the regional and national levels. Tom McFadden new a dairy faculty member. Dairy Hall: Awards ceremony a week earlier, Jan 27 at a new location. 2016 winners are: Leadership- Jodi Wright, Ted Barrows; Pioneer - Lonnie Weatherly; Breeder - Ron Entlicher; Meritorious Service - Al Kertz State Fair: AmyJo Estes sent a report. If anyone had heard that they were not able to bring straw and shavings, that rule did not include dairy cattle (for sheep/swine). Judges not finalized yet. Show/Futurity: Committee recommended to keep All-Missouri awards based on open show placings at State Fair and to keep the 2013 Futurity at the State Fair as well. Sale: Jason Ewing gave a sale report. The sale was a success with 24 total lots averaging $2108 with live animal lots averaging $2286. Roughly same gross as last year. Previously members had wanted cattle consigned that would encompass all price ranges. The committee isn’t pleased with how this has played out and will rethink consignments for next year. Thanked College of the Ozarks for donating embryos to the juniors this year, which was successful for them. Awards Committee: Roy Parsons recommends not pursuing the Missouri Master Breeder and Retired Breeder awards at this time. Continue with the Missouri Distinguished Service to be submitted with application by November 1st. There are 5 submitted applications for 2017. Cow of the Year contest: no changes to the current rules, suggest adding the option for online voting and to allow nominees both in the Pulsator and the Mid-States Holstein News. Field Day: We currently do no have a volunteer for the 2017 field day. Finance: Harlan Borman gave 2017 budget report. Pulsator: Both color and black and white advertising is now available in the Pulsator Newsletter. A great way to advertise at a very reasonable rate. Next deadline March 1, 2017. New Officers: President: Brad Groves, VP: Tommy Scrivner; Secretary: Jodi Wright; Director at Large: Nelson Hostetler; At Large Board Members: Ed Wittorff and Mike Wilson

Therefore, Roy is ineligible for re-election to the board. Two members have declared their candidacy from the region:

Larry ‘Leroy’ Wright, Missouri and Dwight Rokey, Kansas Election will occur at the 2017 National Holstein Convention in Bellvue, Washington. Wishing Larry the best of luck as looks to represent Missouri and our region on the National Board.

Wildfire Relief Efforts: If you would like to help Are you, like me, compelled to help those affected by the raging wildfires in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Kansas but unsure how? Your heart hurts for strangers who lost their lives, homes, livestock and, most of all, their dreams. Here are practical, and secure, ways in which you can share their burdens: Material needs change daily so it’s best to send money and let the folks on the ground use it wisely. The most immediate need in the burned areas is for fencing supplies. Milk replacer can also be donated. LEND A HAND: If you want to roll up your sleeves and help clean up, then sign up individually or as a group. DONATE MONEY: You want to make sure your money is used wisely and goes to the people in greatest need. HAVE A FUNDRAISER : Pancake and sausage feed in your community or church, Pass the hat amongst your friends, coworkers and family, Set a goal and challenge your social media friends and followers WRITE A LETTER: Pen a few words of sympathy and support for the farmers and send it to the addresses listed below. Your letters will be shared with those impacted. I promise you, your words will give them comfort and hope. Those affected will be given courage and strength as others, even strangers, demonstrate care and concern. Your act of kindness is a light that shines hope in their darkness and gives courage to dream again. Missouri Member Helping Out: MO Holstein Jr Member, Dalton Smith of Rolla has already made a couple of trips to the affected area with donated hay.
