Business Meeting - Missouri Holstein Association

January 18-20, 2018 saw the 102nd Annual meeting of the Missouri Holstein Association. Quite an accomplishment for any organization! Here is a short recap of association business conducted at the annual meeting: • •

• • • •

• •

Hospitality Room - We once again had a hospitality room hosted by Ed Wittorff. This is our third year in the same location. It is really wonderful that our association really does enjoy each other’s company as they catch up on the past years events. Tim Ewing, Holstein USA,reminded members they need to call customer service at Holstein USA to reorder tags or order online. NEW POLICY: if you are selling embryos - you must transfer the embryos or flush before the calves are born at time of sale. Holstein had a record year in 2017 for identifications. Holstein sponsored a one hour program on Holstein and the dairy industry on February 8th on RFD-TV. Featured Missouri herd Cla-Cor Farms of Easton. Scott Poock shared reported on the MU Dairy. Youth events of Cow Camp, Judging Camp were reported. There are also grazing programs coming. Karla Deaver reported on the 4-H and FFA state winning dairy teams that both placed 3rd nationally to qualify for international competition. The state should be very proud of their dairy youth! Reagan Bluel encouraged women to come and check out the Women in Dairy programming near you. Dairy Hall: Awards ceremony in February. 2017 winners are: Gene Wiseman, State Milk Board & Stacy Dohle Meritorious Service, Chris Hackman (Central Dairy) – Leadership, John Denbigh – Breeder, and C.H. Eckles & Kenny Lenz – Pioneer State Fair: AmyJo Estes reported they are working on a Supreme Heifer class for youth division and commercial heifer classes. Premium statements have been created and will go out next year with checks. Fair book is being finalized. Watch Facebook Exhibitor page for updated information. Show/Futurity: All-MO awards will remain a one day show for adults at State Fair. Clarification was given on Futurity rules regarding ET calves and partnership animals. Sale: Jason Ewing gave a sale report. It was a tough sale this year given the dairy outlook. 27 total lots averaging $1787 with live animal lots averaging $1862. The committee needs high quality photos before weather turns cold so more advertising can be done. Need a volunteer who would want to work with sale videos for advertising. Thanked Robthom for donating embryos to the juniors this year, which was a success! Awards Committee: Roy Parsons stated the committed would formulate a basic nomination form this year and will cleanup rules for Distinguished Member Application. Recommends that the Dairy Hall be encouraged to have a booth at the Heart of America Dairy Expo and the Dairy Judging Teams should be showcased in the Dairy Hall. Pulsator: Both color and black and white advertising is now available in the Pulsator Newsletter. A great way to advertise at a very reasonable rate. Next deadline June 1, 2018. Donations: Missouri Ayrshire Association hosting National convention in Missouri in 2018 and was seeking funds and the Missouri 4-H and Missouri FFA Dairy Judging teams traveling to Europe were also seeking funds. The Association membership voted to donate $1000 to MO Ayrshire and $3000 to each of the judging teams for their expenses. New Officers: President: Brad Groves, VP: Tommy Scrivner; Secretary: Jodi Wright; Director at Large: Nelson Hostetler; At Large Board Members: Ryan Bilyeu and Mike Wilson

PENNY WARS

We will be participating in Penny Wars again at the National Convention in Traverse City, MI this summer. We would love to be able to bring “Penny,” the traveling stuffed cow, back to Missouri. The state that has the largest amount of pennies in their jar gets to claim Penny. If you would like to write a check or give money not in penny form that is OK. We will convert them and use them however it will help us keep Penny. Give pennies to Shannon anytime up to convention and she will deposit them for you.

Holstein USA - Updates Launches Holstein Marketplace: Holstein Association USA is offering an

opportunity for breeders to advertise Registered HolsteinsÂŽ for sale via a page on the Holstein Association USA website. The development of the Holstein Marketplace comes at a time when Registered Holstein breeders are looking for quality genetics to help maximize their profitability. The new Holstein Marketplace provides easy, affordable advertising to help Registered Holstein breeders optimize their investment. Classified ads may be submitted by using the form found on the Holstein Marketplace website, www.holsteinusa.com/marketplace. Complete the form and e-mail the information to marketplace@holstein.com. Ads are only accepted for Registered Holsteins. The advertisements are grouped into broad categories for Females, Breeding Bulls, Embryos and Sales/Dispersals. As a condition of advertising and potentially selling cattle through this service, sellers must agree to pay for the transfer of the animals, complete the transfer, and submit it upon completion. Advertisements of up to 100 words will cost $25 per month. If the text is 101 words or more, the cost is $25 plus an additional 10 cents per word. For added value, breeders have the option of linking their advertisements to a genomic prediction or pedigree for $5 per animal. Links to a website or Facebook page can also be included in the ad. New ads will be placed on the Holstein Marketplace website the first business day of each month and all ads remain on the site until the last business day of that month. Contact Tim Ewing to place an ad.

Missouri State Classification - July 18: Registration will open May 1. Contact Tim or Holstein customer service to sign up.
