Holstein Field Day host We had a great day! byed The Missouri Holstein Field Day was held Friday, July 12 at Shatto Farms owned and operated by Leroy and Barb Shatto and Matt Schapeler of Osborn, Missouri. We had a warm wonderful day and a great turnout from multiple states. We had some great sponsors that all of our attendees were able to visit with. Shatto’s processing facility was a highlight for many in the group. They showed participants the complete process of the many holding and processing tanks for the various types of milks and drinks that they make. Then they demonstrated the glass bottle washing process and the actual bottling process. They also have a separate processing facility in the building for ice cream and cheese. Participants were also able to view the cattle in their sawdust bedded pack barn and a separate free stall barn. Leroy and Barb Shatto explained how they embarked on their journey and how they have expanded over the years. Herd Manager, Matt Schapeler, talked about the genetics of the herd and their breeding program and milking routines. A demonstration and discussion from the NRCS specialist utilizing the rainfall simulator demonstrated proper land management and cover crop benefits and where your rainfall is going on different types of soil and fields. A wonderful meal was sponsored by Cargill with dessert provided by Shatto celebrating their brownie ice cream sandwiches, Yummm! The day ended with some outstanding door prizes from our sponsors and vendors. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and to visit a innovative dairy in our state. Thank you to our sponsors: CARGILL, Shatto Farm, Croplan by Winfield United, Select Sires, Bunse Seed, Earley Tractor, Kesler Alfalfa, United Cooperatives, Flory Dairy Supply.

Photos: Left - Dean Dohle, Halfway; Right - Ken Melvold, formerly of Champ Goodwood
Dohle of Halfway, Mo., was presented the 29th Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award during the 53rd Dean World Dairy Expo, in memory of Duncan MacKenzie, the 1961 Klussendorf winner.
While this year’s Duncan MacKenzie was raised on a beef cattle and hog operation, everything changed when Dohle began helping his aunt and uncle on their Guernsey dairy farm. That’s when he fell in love with the dairy cow. At age 21, without any work lined up, the Missouri farm boy headed to Madison, Wis., and walked through the barns and eventually found work that year and more importantly found a lifelong vocation. Fitting every attribute of a Klussendorf-MacKenzie winner, Dohle is always willing to help others. matter the breed, or where he might stand in the class, he always sports a smile and helping hand because he appreciates and is humbled by the confidence others have placed in him.
No Over the years, this year’s winner has been fortunate to work with breeders and cows from 35 states, Dohle serves on the World Dairy Expo Exhibitors Committee, and still gets as excited as a little kid on Christmas morning as he waits for the next World Dairy Expo to unfold. As others quickly came to appreciate his talents, Dohle began to work with some of the greatest cows including the Brown Swiss, Timberline Jetway Toni EX-95; the Holstein, Woodfield Inspiration Lou EX-96; the Jersey, Responses Cheryl EX-95; the Brown Swiss, SCF James Vix EX-94; and his very own World Dairy Expo Grand Champion, the Milking Shorthorn, Oak Grove Nikolia. With a keen eye for great dairy cattle, Dohle also has judged shows in 28 states and Mexico. He has twice served as associate judge for the International Brown Swiss show at World Dairy Expo and has judged six breeds at the North American International Livestock Show. Dean would be quick to thank his wife, Stacy, and son, Grant, who help run their 50-cow Starstruck Dairy in Halfway, Mo. Photos and story credit: Hoard’s Dairyman Online
en Melvold of Fresno, Calif., was named the 78th winner of the Klussendorf. The award is given in memory K of Arthur B. Klussendorf, considered an outstanding showman of his time and a model for all those who have followed him. Melvold received the silver trophy designed by Tiffany Jewelers of New York City. This year’s winner showing experiences started like many others with a 4-H project and progressed from there. During college, Melvold worked with the Piney Hill West show herd, traveling up and down the California circuit. The string would show all summer and end up at the California’s Cow Palace and then on to Waterloo, Iowa, at the National Dairy Cattle Congress. It was during this time that the 78th Klussendorf winner rubbed elbows with the likes of Henry LaFranchi, Stuart Rowe, Harlan Askelson, Al Hay, and many more. As these relationships grew, Melvold would work for such herds as Willomonte in Nevada, Champ Goodwood in Missouri, Dreamstreet in New York, and Bottema Farms in Indiana. Melvold also worked with some of the best herds throughout California and assisted or managed hundreds of sales in all dairy breeds throughout the U.S. If success is measured in miles traveled, few can match Melvold’s odometer from boxcar to airplane. Most importantly, if success is measured by friendships gained throughout the years, few in dairy circles could match this Melvold’s success. Simply stated, Ken Melvold is one of the most popular people in our business.
Several of Missouri’s dairy breeders exhibited their cattle at Expo. Below are a listing of breeders. Check the website for complete placings. Dairy Farmers Eligible for Weather Disaster Payments on Dumped Milk Article by: Anna-Lisa Laca, Dairy Herd Management. October 7, 2019
Several severe weather events in 2018 and 2019 forced dairy farmers to dump milk in many parts of the country. Fortunately, the recently updated 2018 and 2019 Wildfires and Hurricanes Indemnity and Milk Loss (WHIP-ML) program provides payments for eligible dairy farmers impacted by weather disasters between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2019. Producers who produced milk that was dumped or removed without full compensation from the commercial market due to hurricanes, floods, tornados, typhoons, volcanic activity, snowstorms or wildfires are eligible to participate. Applications, currently available at local FSA offices, must be completed by February 1, 2020. The period of compensation begins on the day milk was dumped and not shipped on the commercial market and ends on the day the milk was last dumped or removed. Even if a farm received partial payment for dumped milk through cooperative or insurance, they are eligible for additional compensation up to the established market value of the milk. The WHIP-ML payment limitation is capped at $125,000 per year. Additionally, the program will only pay indemnity for a maximum of 30 days per disaster year. However, it’s important to note that bankruptcy status does not exclude a producer from requesting WHIP-ML benefits. Application Details: • A producer with more than one dairy operation, must fill out a separate form for each operation that incurred a loss. Dairy farms with more than one producer should only complete one form for the entire dairy operation. • A copy of all sales documents or monthly milk marketing statements for milk marketed during the period corresponding to the claim should be submitted with the application. Sales documents must include the applicant’s milk pickups during the first 1 to 2 weeks after reinstatement to commercial markets. • Additionally, farmers must provide information regarding how frequently cows are milk and approximate time of each milking. Farmers should also provide approximate time and how often the milk is picked up by the marketing organization, size of geographic area affected by the disaster event, how the milk was removed and records of removal, whether the milk was measured before removal and photos of the weather event.

Milk Donation Reimbursement Program
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the establishment of a Milk Donation Reimbursement Program in accordance with the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (2018 Farm Bill). The new program is effective September 16, 2019. Under the program, eligible dairy organizations partner with non-profit organizations that distribute food to low-income individuals. Those partnerships may apply for and receive limited reimbursements to cover expenses related to certain fluid milk product donations. An eligible dairy organization is a dairy farmer, either individually or as part of a cooperative, or a dairy processor that incurs qualified expenses by accounting to a Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) pool for fluid milk product donations. The reimbursements will offset a portion of the raw milk cost for milk donated to food assistance programs. Congress directed USDA to develop the program to reduce food waste and provide nutrition assistance to low-income individuals. Congress authorized $9 million for the program in Fiscal Year 2019, and $5 million per fiscal year thereafter. Details about program eligibility and participation are available at www.ams.usda.gov/ mdrp. Interested partnerships must apply for Fiscal Year 2019 and Fiscal Year 2020 program participation by submitting a separate completed Milk Donation and Distribution Plan for each fiscal year no later than November 6, 2019. Milk Donation and Distribution Plans submitted for Fiscal Year 2019 can reflect donations made from October 1, 2018, through September 30, 2019. After approval, partnerships will then be able to submit specific information to obtain retroactive reimbursement claims for Fiscal Year 2019. Plans for Fiscal Year 2019 and Fiscal Year 2020 will be approved by December 23, 2019. The Federal Register notice is available at: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2019/09/05/2019-19090/establishment-of-a-milk-donation-reimbursement-program.
