ARCHITECTURE

Nargin Island

Baku, Azerbaijan Arch Design Studio (ADRA), 2012 Design by Mohsen Moghaddam This project envisioned a complex constructed on an island located fifteen kilometres away from Baku’s shore. The island is three kilometres in length and one kilometre in width. The complex contains residential, entertainment and public buildings. The residential buildings are spread around the island to offer maximum levels of privacy and luxury. To facilitate access for visitors and residents, public facilities are located at the entrance and in the centre of the island. The goal of the project is to convert the island into a spacious natural zoo. Serving as access routes, the island overpasses grant the visitors a broad, open view of animal life without direct human intrusion into the natural habitat. Taking advantage of constant winds in

this location on the Caspian Sea, the island will be supplied with wind-generated power. The heating system within the complex will be supported by solar energy. Green transportation - such as bicycles and electronic cars - will also be used on the island.

Gemi Hotel

Baku, Azerbaijan Arch Design Studio (ADRA), 2011 Design by Mohsen Moghaddam Located near the shoreline in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, the project features a multi-purpose complex. The first three floors house a theatre and shopping centre and the upper floors are reserved for a hotel with a spectacular view of the city skyline. The design is based on the shape of a ship. The horizontal form of the building gracefully blends in with the horizon and does not obstruct an outside observer’s view.

URBAN DESIGN

Yachay City

Yachay, Ecuador Urban Design Studio (CCNY), 2014 Design by Mohsen Moghaddam, Dana Arazi, and Aikaterini Pantazaka Under the request of the president of Ecuador to build a tech-city, a proposal was introduced by a Korean company which was insufficient for the Ecuadorian client. In the original proposal the city was to be built on the agricultural land. Considering the value of the agricultural land and the importance of the view of the landscape, our team decided to reverse the original proposal

and to plan a city on the slopes. The agricultural land (3.335 acres) can provide 80% of the daily consumption of fruit, grains and vegetables for 70,000 residents of Yachay. In addition, a collaboration between the two neighboring cities of Ibarra and Yachay can be established to coproduce on their agricultural fields. The Master plan of the city is designed on the slopes with 5% to 35% degree. The circulation schema is designed to adhere to the topography of the site within the limitation of 10% slope for the streets. Access routes consists of pedestrian roads, bike tracks, and car roads. The pedestrian roads also operate as the main public space of neighborhoods. To facilitate access to daily needs, the neighborhoods 40

41

contain necessities such as: municipal service, employment and educational space, shops, recreation and cultural space within a short walking distance of less than 400 meters. The diversity of land use is exemplified in the diagram and the horizontal section. A few centers were established in the plan based on the location of existing communities, university buildings under construction, and the intersections of existing main roads. Yachay will be connected to Ibarra via the exisiting train line that currently operates as a tourist attraction, but will function as a public transportation line connecting the two cities. Due to unstable soil of the site, a particular light steel structure was designed as the main construction method in the city. Lifted buildings from the surface consisting of fabric roofs generate energy efficient structures which are suitable for the stable climate of Ecuador.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Mosque

Kiev, Ukraine Employer: Kamyar Faraz Co. 2012 Design by Mohsen Moghaddam Upon the Muslim community’s request to renovate the old mosque in the suburb of Kiev, the following proposal was presented. To renovate the interior of the mosque, studying different shapes of Islamic columns and altars was an essential task. The aesthetic aspect of the interior architecture was not the only focus, but also generating the sentiment of glory and greatness to the worshipers was an objective. Due to budget limitations, painting ornament on stucco was the preferred method for decoration.

Villa in Mehrshahr

Karaj, Iran Employer: 2MO Design Group, 2007 Design by Mohsen Moghaddam The ceiling design was inspired by the traditional houses in the North of Iran. To create a sense of warmness, wood was used in the interior space of the house. Redesigning the staircase and connecting the two floors was an important part of the project. Using a steel structure for the staircase and covering it with stone and wood generated a dynamic and elegance shape in the space. A set of warm toned stones in harmony with the wooden details significantly improved the aesthetic quality of the space.
