The Ultimate Mark of a Woman
There are so many ways to show the one in your life how much they mean to you. You might give them flowers, chocolates or a fragrance but nothing quite says you care than a piece of fine jewellery. Birjees Hussain looks at its timeless allure Diamonds are a girl s best friend When most people hear these words they think of Marilyn Monroe in the movie Some Like It Hot dancing and singing what might seem like a meaningless medley. But little do they realise how true these lyrics actually are. Diamonds are not just a girl s best friend, they re everybody s best friend. And not just diamonds. Jewellery, in general, is the ideal asset to own and to give. It tends not to
10
February 2005
lose its value and it often outlasts the owner. So, if your wife or fiancé would love to receive a piece of jewellery this Valentine s Day, why not splurge a little this year? It ll not only be the one true way to show her how much you care but it ll also be an investment. Show her how much you love her This might sound materialistic but it is, in fact, true. You can give her chocolates, you can give her flowers or you can even give her perfume but nothing speaks volumes than giving her a piece of the future. Flowers can wilt and die, chocolates can
give her cavities and perfume can fade away but jewellery can not only enhance her beauty but it can last forever too; sometimes it can even appreciate in value. So what do you give her? The beauty of jewellery is that no matter what you give her it ll never be out of fashion. And what s even more beautiful is that she ll love it. And you know you can give her anything at any time of the year and for any occasion, not just St Valentine s Day. It could be her birthday, your wedding anniversary, or your daughter might be graduating from university. Jewels not in the crown Whatever the occasion men can show they care in so many ways. They can help around the house, or take the kids for the afternoon so that she can spend it at the salon or they can take her for an evening meal at her favourite restaurant. But jewellery has its unique mysterious fascination. Men can say, I love you but sometimes the right kind of jewellery can speak a thousand words. Some men, though, will do the ultimate in the name of love. No, we re not talking about Romeo taking his life, we re talking about giving up the life of a king, which is likely to be far harder to do than taking your life. He was known for abdicating from the most important post in the world for the woman he loved. King Edward VIII, later known as the Duke of Windsor, met and fell in love with Wallis Simpson. Unable to marry her and be king at the same time he was faced with a choice; the throne of England or Mrs Simpson and he made the

ultimate sacrifice. But the late Duke of Windsor wasn t just known for his abdication from the throne of England. He was also a lover and connoisseur of fine gems and jewels. Although his abdication was public knowledge no one really knew of the depth of love he had for his bride after the couple left England. It only became apparent after the Duchess s death when some of the most exquisite jewellery, in terms of design and value, were discovered in the Duchess s cache. The late Duke almost always expressed his love to Mrs Simpson with inscriptions on the pieces he gave her. One was a beautiful sapphire and diamond art deco bracelet bearing the inscription For our contract 18-V-1937 . Another superb piece was a diamond and ruby parure which the Duke presented to Wallis on her 40th birthday. It was one of her favourite and it too bore an inscription, My Wallis from her David, 19th June 1936 . Anthony and Cleopatra Richard Burton and Liz Taylor s stormy on again off again romance has become as famous as their numerous on screen relationships; from The VIPs to Cleopatra. But no celebrity engagement has ever been as memorable as the most famous engagement of all times. The Taylor-Burton duo has become synonymous with the largest diamond ring of all times. In fact, no celebrity couple has so far been able to beat it. And you don t have to either. Go for something that s in your budget. Remember, large or small each jewel will be special because it came from you. Despite this philosophical approach there is one rule of
thumb all fiancés should bear in mind when buying that all-important engagement ring. In general, a man should spend a least a third of his month s salary on the ring. Of course this is not a hard and fast rule and in my opinion it s better to put money away into a nest egg rather than to spend it all on an engagement and wedding. Wedding Planners But no matter what the occasion jewels are an invaluable addition and no wedding would be complete without some item of jewellery being included in the outfit. However, in some cultures jewellery and other body ornaments are crucial. Tribes in Africa dress their brides in elaborate ornaments and the more she wears, especially round her neck, the more it symbolises her wealth. Of course the amount of jewellery worn on her wedding day symbolises the wealth the bride s family has and they do indeed make a special point of flaunting it. The more elaborate the jewellery worn by the bride and the greater in number they are the more respect she commands. In the West, however, jewellery doesn t play such a big role in weddings; it s all about the wedding gown. But no gown is complete without some jewellery. One classic look includes a pearl choker with three rows and matching tear-drop earrings making a beautiful white ensemble. Gift ideas Wedding and engagements aside, what do you give her if on St Valentine s Day or if it s her birthday. How about a gold or sterling silver heartshaped locket? You could put pictures of her loved ones inside or a picture of the two of you sharing a special moment together.
If it s your wedding anniversary then why not buy her a silver or white gold charm bracelet, each charm could represent a memorable event from each year you ve been together. Brooches might seem a tad old fashioned but they re the perfect accessory to the lapel of a business suit. And go for a butterfly brooch because as the song goes, Love is like a butterfly, it s soft and gentle as a sigh Jewellery is not just for the rich and famous. Prices are as varied as the variety of designs and therefore accessible to even those on a modest income so you don t have to burn a hole in your pocket to make that special someone happy. So, go on, show her how much you care.

t Valentine s Day is a holiday that s specifically dedicated to couples and is celebrated on February 14. The customs is for spouses and fiancés to send each other greeting cards or gifts that express their affection. Cards, which are also known as valentines , are usually sent anonymously and a typical card might have a picture of a heart with an arrow through it or cupid bearing his famous bow and arrow or even cuddly bears, all of which are designed to symbolise the sender s feelings for the recipient. But where did this custom of expressing ones feelings on this particular day originate? Where did it come from? There are many different stories behind the origins of St Valentine s Day but the one that is most common is that it has religious connotations. This is probably because there were two valentines in the 3rd Century who were put to death for their faith on the same day and, therefore, had nothing to do with love or courting. Later people linked St Valentine s Day to a festival in ancient Rome called Lupercalis which was held on 15 February. It was also linked to a festival for shepherds which was celebrated in honour of Faunus as a good omen to specifically ensure that the fields and flocks remained fertile. For some reason St. Valentine has traditionally been regarded as the patron saint of lovers and this notion has been carried on by one of Chaucer s early works which states that birds supposedly pair up on St Valentine s Day. Tales of yore History is riddled with tales of hearts and flowers. We re all familiar with the saying, wearing your heart on your sleeves . It has its origins in the Middle Ages when

garments tended to have detachable sleeves for easy washing. Soldiers often carried their beloved s sleeves on their shields for good luck. To have a red heart sewn on your sleeve meant you were devoted to the Saint of Love. Will you be my valentine? On a more contemporary note the most well known words in modern works are: Will you be my valentine? which first appeared in the Paston Letters. These are the largest surviving collection of 15thcentury English correspondence written by the Norfolk-based Paston family and their neighbours. But a well known and oft quoted poem of unknown origin and in its numerous variations is: Roses are red, violets blue, Carnations sweet and so are you. Thou art my love and I am thine; I drew thee for my Valentine.
Not just for lovers In the old days, St Valentine s Day was especially for lovers, husbands and wives or couples courting and this pretty much remains the same in the UK; if you re single St Valentine s Day is just another day for you. When I first moved out to Dubai I was rather surprised in my first year when a supermarket cashier wished me happy Valentine s Day as I was leaving. I was puzzled to say the least. However, I quickly realised that in the United States it s considered to be a day for everyone and has, in fact, become a national holiday. In the UAE, it s also a time when people wish each other a happy valentine regardless of who they are. Parents wish their children a happy valentine, children their parents and teachers and friends each other. It s simply taken on a different slant which is great because nobody gets left out. The symbol of love Hearts and flowers remain the main symbol of St Valentine s Day and greeting
cards depicting them have turned into a multimillion dollar industry. But you know, you don t have to spend a fortune on your valentine. You ve heard the saying, say it with flowers , but there are so many other more innovative ways to show someone you care. Flowers are great but not everyone loves them. Moreover, most magazines look at gifts for women and what to give the man in your life tends to be overlooked. We re going to suggest some gifts ideas which both men and women will appreciate. Moreover they won t cost a bomb and will really add that personal touch which a department store gift won t. Great gift ideas Hand made card I think we could learn a lot from kids. They have very little cash but they can make it go a long way. At school we often made cards for Christmas and Easter and this is something you could try for Valentine s Day. It s means so much more to the recipient to know that you took the time to actually make something from your heart. You don t have to be a great artist to create a masterpiece so why not visit an arts and crafts shop and pick up some art materials like glue, glitter, coloured ribbons and art paper? And get snipping. A day at a spa you know how hard they and not just at home but at the office too, so to show your appreciation how about booking your partner into a day at the spa? They could get a facial, pedicure, manicure and a massage. But do make sure it s on a weekend when they re free from work. Cook a meal If you re good in the kitchen why not surprise them with a meal you ve cooked yourself. It doesn t have to be a gourmet meal; it can be as simple as lasagne or spaghetti followed by chocolate mousse or an ice cream. Don t forget the candles! Serenade him or her I don t mean stand under the balcony singing, When the moon hits your eye , although if you can sing go right ahead. You could put together some of their favourite music on tape or, if you can sing, you could always record a song. What you could do is get hold of just the music to a song and add your own lyrics to
it. But if you can t sing, how about writing a poem and reciting it to the music. Things not to give or do If it s to your wife or fiancé, please sign the card because, although traditionally they were sent anonymously, not signing them is considered juvenile. Please do not buy something that is more of a prank than something which is meaningful. One year a friend of mine in the UK received a small clockwork red-lip with giant clown boots. When wound up it actually hopped about. It was tacky and thoughtless. My friend was not amused! If you re going to buy chocolates do make sure that your loved one actually likes chocolates. And make sure they re not on a diet. Happy Valentine s Day!

Is dance a sport? Sport means going further, reaching higher, moving faster and more skillfully. Challenge anyone to name tine sprits and revel in the conventional manner in which people view it. Few people explore the true nature of sport and very few people consider the evolution of its boundaries. Sport is no longer grounded on traditional playing fields, on courts or in the pool. In the hectic whirl of modern life women continue to challenge and push the boundaries of sport. It's a sure bet that dance wouldn't be one of the ten sports people name, yet consider what is involved in this rhythmic pastime: Athleticism. Agility. Balance. Energy. Flexibility. Grace. Skill. Stamina. Suppleness. Timing. The list goes on. Dance is a true sport to get the heart pounding, body pulsating, and mind invigorated. The only competitor is the music itself. Its time to move beyond the traditional and embrace the new. Take sport. Add music. The Spring 2005 range features a collection of products to cater for women who come out to dance. More conventional sports such as swimming, running and cardio are all there. Dance just provides the leadÂ…

Romantic Interludes
Whether you re a newly married couple or are considering a second honeymoon and wondering where to go Birjees Hussain has some ideal romantic locations around the world for you to consider.
Most holiday destinations are either for the entire family, like Disney World or a day at the beach, or are for culture lovers who want to take in the sites of historic cities like London and New York where one can visit theatres, the stage and absorb local architecture and culture. But honeymooners and couples looking to just get away from the hustle and bustle of a busy lifestyle often have difficulty finding destinations that are designed with specifically couples in mind. So for couples planning that all-important retreat we ve had a look around and come up with some of the most exotic and well-known locals, both on terra firma and on the high seas.
France
France is the kingdom of amour and is ideal not only for a honeymoon but for wedding anniversaries too. You have so many locations to choose from. From the elegance of Cannes to the splendour of Monaco which overlooks the Mediterranean. Whether you want to sunbath in the South of France or have a candlelit romantic dinner for just the two of you, France is the quintessential location. And if you re in Monaco, why not take a helicopter ride for spectacular views of the city? Paris is Europe s most romantic city and known for its chic and sophistication. You can enjoy the varied entertainment,

Ride the lift to the top of the tower and astound your eyes with the most breathtaking views of Paris by night. And for that extra special evening take a romantic cruise on the Seine.
South Africa
South Africa is known as the rainbow nation and is renowned for its exotic fruit, myriad of wildlife, the best game reserves and amazing scenery. But it s a little known fact that South Africa is also one of the most romantic locations in the

Without having to go far you can visit several exotic ports, find a secluded spot to be alone in or a lively nightclub if you want to dance the night away. History: Ball: A Timeless Vision Of Accuracy Under Adverse Conditions Locomotives and watch-making may seem to run on different tracks. But their stories entwined on a fateful day in 1891, when two mail trains collided in Ohio, in the United States. The tragedy on April 19, which killed both drivers and nine others, led to the foundation of a great name in modern precision watch-making. BALL Watch was born when Webster Clay Ball from Cleveland, Ohio, was enlisted by the rail company as chief inspector after the crash horror. Events that led to the crash horror were simple enough. Investigations later led to a simple cause: an error in time-keeping, due to a faulty timepiece. The watch of an engineer on one train, unknown to him, had stopped for four minutes. He sped on, thinking he had seven minutes to his destination where the train could give away to another locomotive. He was actually just three minutes away from death. Determined to prevent similar accidents from ever happening again, the rail authorities entrusted Ball with among other responsibilities the key task of timekeeping.
It was Ball s system that led to accuracy and uniformity in timekeeping, and establish railroad time and railroad watches as the standard for precision timekeeping. Today, BALL is one of the most respected and established watch brands in the United States. Ball: The Choice For Heros Of Endurance Jim Whittaker conquers mountains, and Richard Limeburner plumbs the depths of the mysterious oceans. They tread two ends of the earth, yet are united by a love of nature and their passion for discovery. These heroes also share qualities of great reserves of grit and endurance. At Ball Watch Co, we are proud to help these new frontier heroes keep time, in sub-freezing temperatures and frozen wastes, from the top of the world to the other end. At Last, A Watch That Conquers All Night Activities Time In The Dark The problem of telling time in the dark dates back to very early days in the civilized world. In many villages and hamlets, people generally had no choice but to use a sundial during the daylight hours and a graduated candle at night, although the precision of the latter, a fairly costly system, was not very good.

Self-Powered Micro Gas Lights Micro Gas Lights is a novel light source manufactured by means of Swiss innovative laser technology that can be used on all types of watches. It provides superior, long-life brightness 100 times better than the current markings using luminous paint, and with a useful life easily reaching 25 years. It does so without recharging or draining batteries. You can continuously year in year out without read the watch quickly and safely in brightest daylight or deepest night without your eyes having to adapt to the ambient light. The long road to today s technology was taken in three stages: Up until the mid-sixties, naturally occurring radium was added. In the sixties, artificially produced radioisotopes became available, among them tritium. The new technology captures tritium safely in a very stable form, as a pure gas sealed in a hollow body of mineral glass. The third stage to the state-of-the-art technology permits a 100-fold achievable brightness, combined with 100fold reduction of the irradiation risk to an absolutely negligible level. TrainMaster Pulse Meter Automatic Chronograph Series The World s 1st Illuminating Automatic Chronograph Pulse Meter the first automatic chronograph of Ball Watch. Behind the complicated yet fine designed dial is an accurate chronograph movement that measures time up to 12 hours. It s precision allows the measurement of pulsation. Combining the accurate time keeping with superior 5,000Gs shock resistant, Pulse Meter would make a dependable timepiece for the explorers even in the most adverse environment. EngineerMaster ~ Telemeter Automatic Chronograph Series The Ultimate Tornado Chaser Watch That Conquers All Night Activities Imagine a scene like this: a twister moving across the quite landscape at a speed of 200 miles per hour, lifts up every visible establishments, including rooftops, sheds even a whole farm from ground into the dark sky. Think that is a scene only from
the Hollywood s box office hit? Not exactly. In fact, this is the most hazardous real life situation that nature can pose to us. Every year, tornado has made billions of damages and the central United States, including Ohio - the birthplace of BALL Watch, is named as Tornado Alley to remind people that twister is such a common phenomenon in this area. While everyone will run away from a tornado, a very few bunch of people will chase the twister and risking their life in the name of science. Tornado chasers will put themselves directly in the path of the marauding monster; stay just ahead, sometimes within a hundred meter, of the swirling twister to anticipate its every move. They will try to launch their equipment pack inside the center of the tornado, hoping to obtain valuable scientific data about the formation and behaviour of tornado. In this truly adverse condition, the life of the scientist depends on the accuracy of their every move. As a tribute to these remarkable people, BALL Watch has developed the world s first illuminating automatic telemetric watch. Telemeter can easily measure the distance between the observer and a situation that is observable both visually and audibly (like lightning and thunder) based on the speed of sound through air. Simply starts the chronograph on an optical signal and then stop the counter when the audio signal is heard. The distance will be indicated on the telemetric in kilometer.

Does your love life go down a notch or two when St Valentine s Day is over? It doesn t have to. With a little effort you can have romance every day. Birjees Hussain has some ideas.
MAKE EVERYDAY ST. VALENTINE S DAY St Valentine s Day is a bit like Christmas. For weeks everyone plans and plans and plans for that one special day but when the day s over everyone goes back to being their normal selves. No more romance, no buying flowers or doing anything special for one another. But the end of St Valentine s Day doesn t have to be the end of romance. With a bit of inspiration and a lot of imagination you can make every day special. So let s start with our surroundings. Feng shui of romance Feng shui is the art of deliberately rearranging your belongings around you so that they bring you positive results, whether it s to your career, your family
58

life or your love life. Feng shui practitioners say that there are things you can do around your home to encourage good relationships. For example, Cacti are prickly so they should be kept at arms length unless you want a prickly love life. Single bird images, whether they re photos or statues, signify being single so replace them with birds in pairs. Mirrors of all kinds are good because they are said to reflect positive energy and the rounder the mirror the better. Pinks and reds are romantically inclined so scatter pink or red cushions and candles around but you don t want the colour to overwhelm the room so don t overdo it. It s the little things Start with small things like doing something special for each other and it doesn t
have to cost much. Firstly, if you have small children feed them early and send them to bed by 9pm at the latest to give yourselves some alone time. Gentlemen, buy flowers, even a single rose, on your way home from work. If she works surprise her with a lunch date or sneak a little poem into her pocket or bag; somewhere you know she ll look. And when you get home, don t pull on a vest or t-shirt and plonk yourself in front of the TV. Shave, dress for dinner and splash on some aftershave. If you get home before she does why not prepare the evening meal; it doesn t have to be elaborate. And try making the same effort at the weekends. Ladies, even if you ve been working all day why not make the effort to touch up your makeup and put you hair up in a

bun? If you are home before him, have his favourite beverage ready and let him watch TV for about half an hour before discussing anything or eating. Cook together Preparing an intimate meal together can be just as romantic as eating it together and it shows that you want to help each other out. Lay the table, chop the veggies, wash the salad and make the dressing. It s so much more fun if you both do it together. Chocolate mousse and strawberries Ingredients 90g good quality chocolate 2 egg whites 35g granulated sugar 1 egg yolk 25ml whipping cream Fresh strawberries, washed and halved 2 dessert glasses
Pasta with tomato sauce This dish is quick and simple to prepare. You can literally prepare it moments before you eat. Ingredients Pasta shells or ribbons, enough for two One tin peeled tomatoes, chopped One chopped clove of garlic (optional) Chopped green and yellow peppers 1 tsp coriander One tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Preparation Boil the pasta until it s at the al dente stage. Drain and set aside. Do not over boil the pasta because it ll turn squishy. To make the sauce, heat the olive oil in a saucepan and then put in the chopped garlic. If you want to avoid the garlic then stick to the chopped green and yellow peppers and fry until they just soften. Then pour in the tinned tomato and cook until the mixture begins to fry vigorously. Add the salt and pepper and the chopped coriander and keep frying, occasionally adding tiny amounts of water to prevent burning, until the oil separates out and the sauce turns dark red. Serve immediately with the pasta.
Preparation Melt the chocolate in a water bath. Whisk the egg whites until they begin to form peaks then slowly add the granulated sugar. Continue whisking the white until it has a meringue-like consistency. Mix the egg yolk into the melted chocolate, add the cream and slowly fold this mixture into the whites. Pour the finished mousse into the glasses, place a sprig of mint in the centre and pop in the fridge to set. Place each glass on a saucer and arrange the strawberries around its base and serve.
Make something simple, perhaps a pasta dish followed by a gooey dessert. And if you re at a loss for recipes here s a main course and dessert for you to try. These dishes are simple to prepare. But don t end it there. How about enjoying them somewhere exotic? But where?
like dining experience at home. And it s easy to do because the chances are that most of what you need to recreate the beach atmosphere you ll already have, or you can get hold of things by scouring your neighbourhood. Why not make a centre piece, place mats, napkin holders, and dress the table and chairs too? Here s how. You ll need assorted shells, sand, palm fronds, philodendron leaves, bamboo blinds and rods, a hula skirt, raffia, push pins, glue gun, staple gun and the base of a small study cardboard box. For the candleholder glue assorted shells round the sides of the base and then fill it with sand to hold two red candles. For the napkin ring, glue a shell to a hair band. For the tabletop cut the bamboo blind to size and staple down. Cut to size bamboo rods and glue round the edges of the tabletop. Next tie bamboo blinds round each leg with raffia and staple a hula skirt round the sides of the table. Now add a bit of green to the ensemble by tying philodendron leaves to the back of each chair with raffia. Make place mats using the leaves of palm fronds. Pin down 10 leaves by their ends 1cm apart. Weave through palm leaves 1cm apart and glue the ends to each other. Trim the edges. These will keep for about two days in the fridge. Set up the entire ensemble on the patio, balcony or dining room. Romance is something that we can create and we don t need to have a day designated for it. With a little bit of creativity everyday can be romantic and special for our loved one. Happy Valentine s Day!
Bring the beach home The beach can be such an enchanting place to enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner. But what do you do if you can t get to the beach? Easy. Create a beach-

FOR LOVERS
by Amina Abdel-Halim

Planning a romantic getaway? This month ESPRIT travels to the sun drenched shores of Spain to get you in the mood for a steaming journey, Spanish-style.
ravel to Spain is relatively easy, the weather is calm, the beaches are long, the food is flavorful, and the people are relaxed. So why not head out for a romantic excursion? More than 50 million foreigners a year visit Spain, yet you can travel great distances and hear nothing but Spanish. Geographically, Spain s diversity is wide and varied. Besides endless tracts of sierra, you can find ragged coastline, sandy beaches, and misty rain in the north. If you and your loved one enjoy sightseeing and taking pictures, there are plenty of architectural masterpieces to come-by. Culturally, the country is accentuated

with old buildings like Roman aqueducts and Islamic palaces to Gothic cathedrals, not to mention a large concentration of medieval castles. During the period of Muslim rule in Spain, Granada was the finest city on the peninsula. Today it is still home to the greatest Muslim legacy in Europe, and one of the most inspiring attractions on the Continent - the Alhambra. The Alhambra palace is a must-see. Set against the stunning Sierra Nevada and surrounded by cypress and elms, it s an escape into Granada s Moorish past. There s a lot to see, including the Alcazaba, the Palacio Nazaries (Nasrid Palace) and the Generalife gardens, so schedule-in at least one romantic afternoon. For the art-going couple, Spain was once home to some of the world s great artists El Greco, Velasquez, Goya, Picasso, Dali and has the museums and galleries to prove it. The country vibrates with music of every kind: the drama of flamenco, the melancholy lyricism of Celtic music, and the gaitas (bagpipes) in the northwest. If you re looking for the ideal way to experience Spanish culture and discover its enchanting taverns, you and your hubby can spend the day sampling tapas. Tapas are an exquisite, varied sample of popular regional cuisine. You can share dishes and enjoy a broad selection of products. You ll find all the taste of Spain in just one meal, and usually at very

affordable prices. If luxury is what you re after, then stunning San Sebastián or Donostia, as the city is known in Euskera, is a surprisingly relaxed place with a small-town feel. The city is famed as a ritzy resort for wealthy Spaniards who want to get away from the hordes in the south. Those who live here consider themselves the luckiest people in Spain and won t hesitate to tell you so. Fall in love all over again in the charming city of Seville. The poet-king Al-Mutamid, was one of the first people to fall in love with this city. Its atmosphere is captivating and perfectly stylish, confident, ancient,
intimate, and fun. Two great monuments - the Muslim Alcázar and the Christian cathedral reveal most of their glories once you re inside. These, along with many other buildings and areas around Seville, are World Heritage Sites. Getting around Spain is best done by bus. The bus networks gives you better coverage than the rail system and are also most affordable. The only time you might seriously consider flying within Spain is to get out to the islands. From Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante, there are often good deals on charter
flights. Ferries regularly connect the mainland with the Balearic Islands, but flying is a better choice considering the time saved. Spain is one of Europe s more affordable countries. With US $100.00 a day you can stay in excellent accommodation, rent a car and eat some of the best food Spain has to offer. Whether for a short holiday excursion or for a prolonged vacation, after one visit, you and your loved one will relish the memories and look forward to recreating your romantic getaway time and time again.

ince it was introduced in 2003, the XLR has met with overwhelming response from the press, public and retailers throughout the Middle East. In its first model year XLR became much sought after by premium car enthusiasts throughout the region. The Cadillac XLR s dynamic design and advanced technology has brought a striking new presence to the automotive spectrum. A luxury roadster with performance car roots, the XLR underscores its vibrant visual statement with a performance-oriented chassis and structure, and a 4.6L North star V-8 VVT (variable valve timing) engine and rear-wheel-drive. This combination makes it the lightest, most powerful vehicle in its class. Under its skin, the XLR s harmonious blend of technologies and materials add pleasure, not complexity, to the driving experience. These include a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, Magnetic Ride Control, StabiliTrak, entertainment, heated and cooled seats and keyless access with push-button start. For 2005, XLR makes modest enhancements to an already perfect package, including a new wood interior in Dark

Eucalyptus and Blue Steel exterior paint to replaces Thunder Gray. Edgy design The XLR is a contemporary expression of Cadillac s heritage of landmark design and advanced technology. Bold and edgy, yet elegant and refined, the XLR s linear, crisp look creates a dramatic presence and modern icon for luxury and performance, yet it pays tribute to the marque s rich history. The XLR s strong grille, for example, harkens back to Cadillac s heritage but expresses itself in a new way. The vertical headlamps, on the other hand, express the division s current design philosophy. The XLR offers Middle East customers the ultimate convenience of a retractable hard top. By pushing and holding a single button, the XLR can convert from coupé to open roadster in less than 30 seconds. The top is made of aluminum and magnesium with composite exterior panels with a heated glass backlight and glass rearquarter windows. Power train The XLR s North star 4.6L V-8 VVT is a 90degree, DOHC, four-valves-per-cylinder engine featuring an aluminum block and cylinder heads, and a valve train configu-

It is quiet, yet tuned to give the driver feedback from the environment. It operates cleanly and efficiently, with excellent reliability and durability. The XLR features the first longitudinal application of the 4.6L North Star V-8. The V-8 is mated to the Hydra-Matic 5L50-E five-speed automatic transmission. Developed to manage the high torque and horsepower of the engine, it is one of the most technologically advanced transmissions in the industry. Another advantage of Cadillac s roadster not shared by the competition is its rearmounted transmission. This helps give the XLR a virtual 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution for superior balance, as well as providing occupants unusually roomy footwell space. Architecture and suspension The story starts with the XLR s backbone, upon which the car s dynamic capabilities depend. Based on GM s new performance car architecture, this unique and patented structure uses steel hydro formed perime-

ter frame rails, an enclosed structural tunnel, an aluminum cockpit structure and balsa-cored composite floors. The suspension system makes the XLR a true luxury roadster with the handling qualities of a performance car. To this end, the design uses double wishbones at each corner, combined with transverse-mounted, composite leaf springs front and rear. The XLR achieves a maximum lateral Gforce of more than 0.9. It runs on Michelin ZP tires with advanced run-flat technology that eliminates the need for a spare and provides outstanding overall tire performance. Magnetic Ride Control The XLR also is one of the world s first vehicles to be equipped with Magnetic Ride Control electronically controlled, magnetic-fluid based real-time damping. The system uses four wheel-to-body based real-time damping and as well to body displacement sensors to measure wheel motion over the road surface and
responds by adjusting the shock damping at speeds approaching one millisecond. Adaptive cruise control The XLR has adaptive cruise control (ACC). While not a substitute for full driver attention, this system greatly expands the convenience of cruise control. ACC uses a radar sensor mounted at the front of the car to detect objects in its path. Comfort and convenience One of the XLR s foremost convenience features is Keyless Access, making this a truly keyless car. A driver can simply keep the fob in a pocket or purse to operate the doors, trunk and ignition. The fob communicates with the XLR s computer control system via radio antennas under the car s bodywork. The system is intuitive and hassle free.
The XLR s seats are both heated and cooled in the back and the cushion. A 7inch (178-mm) color touch screen mounted in the upper center console gives driver and passenger access to DVD navigation; a nine-speaker world-class Base audio system with a six-CD in-dash changer and digital signal processing modes and DVD entertainment (available in Park position only). The XLR also is equipped with a head-up display (HUD) that projects key driver information onto the windshield. Navigation The XLR s Navigation System allows drivers to plan their route before setting out on a trip, and receive turn-by-turn route map and guidance with voice prompts throughout their journey.

elebrity status has its perks million dollar paychecks, VIP treatments and unsolicited favors. But fame has its price. For celebrities, privacy can be an expensive luxury. So how is it possible for celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Tom Cruise to go on vacation where they will not be star-struck by autograph seekers? They can either buy their own private resorts, or take off on a cruise to the Maldives in their own private yacht. But while celebrities do have fat bank accounts, developing their own resort can be a costly proposition, and may not be worth it over the long run, as in Michael Jackson s Neverland.
74
February 2005
Celebrities hire personal vacation planners who scour the world for ultra-exclusive resorts and holiday spots where they can relax and unwind without having to worry about the paparazzi or autograph hounds. Price is no barrier, as long as privacy and luxury are guaranteed. And so the thinking goes, when celebrities travel, and they do so a lot, they only travel to the best. Some of the traditional favorites include hotels in Monaco, but more exciting resort holidays have become recent favorites among Hollywood s biggest stars. This includes a chic island in the Caribbean called St. Barthelemy, or St. Barts, among the rich and famous. The French-owned island feels and looks like a picture-perfect French village transported to the Caribbean. The island has the best of both worlds, combining world-class food, gourmet shops, clubs, beaches and shopping. Celebrities flock here for the privacy along with the nightlife. David Letterman comes nearly ever year, and zooms around in a little jalopy. Le Toiny has hosted Kate Moss, Brad Pitt, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Another holiday celebrity hot spot is Hotel Cipriani. It was founded by
Giuseppe Cipriani, owner of the famed Harry s Bar, a favorite dining and drinking spot of Ernest Hemingway, Charlie Chaplin and Woody Allen, but today is part of Orient-Express Hotels. During the high season, which extends from spring through the summer, the Cipriani is the top choice for Mick Jagger, Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle Pfeiffer. Here are today s top destinations for Hollywood s very discriminating tastes. #5 The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess A member of the Leading Hotels of the World, this magnificent resort is scenically set against the backdrop of Arizona s McDowell Mountains and pays tribute to Arizona s Spanish Colonial heritage. A low-lying coral island, Pamalican is rimmed by seven square kilometres of pristine reef. The resort s 40 casitas (65-square-metre cottages in hillside and beachfront settings) are modelled after the Philippine bahay kubo (native dwelling). Inside, decorative details pay homage to neighboring islands: pebble-washed walls, coconut-shell tables, rustic Palawan rice and knife baskets, a king-size bed with a rattan headboard and sliding-glass doors that reveal outdoor decks with his-and-her divans. Nearly half the space in a casita is given over to a Cebu-marble bathroom, with twin vanities, separate changing areas, a shower and an elegant bathtub. Having gone through the 3rd lesson, Ibrahim Assi takes us rd through a 3 round of photography.
Depth of Field The depth of field is the distance in front of and behind the subject that appear to be in focus. For any given lens setting, there is only one distance at which a subject is in focus, but focus falls off gradually on either side of that distance, so there is a region in which the blurring is tolerable. This region is greater behind the point of focus than it is in front. Several factors determine whether the objective error in focus becomes noticeable. Subject matter, movement, the distance of the subject from the camera and the way in which the image is displayed, all have an influence. However the most important factor is the actual degree of error in relation to the area of film exposed. Light from a point source at the correct distance will produce the image of a point on the film. A point farther away or nearer will produce the image of a disk whose border is known as “circle of confusion”. The diameter of these circles increases with distance from the point of focus and so can be used as the measure of error. Depth of field is related to the focal length of the lens, the effective diameter of the lens opening and the camera-to-subject distance. Lenses of short focal length have greater depth of field than long lenses. For any given lens, the depth of field increases as the distance to the point of focus increases up to the hyperfocal distance (see figure). As the point of focus moves beyond the hyper focal distance, the field extends to infinity, but the distance to the nearest point of acceptable clarity increases, so the total depth of field actually decreases.

In Photography and Cinematography, Perspective Distortion is a result of using lenses with a focal length that differs significantly from that of a normal lens.
In comparison, longer lenses ( 85 mm and greater for a 35 mm camera) appear to shorten distance between objects, and compress the perspective.
Perspective Distortion is especially noticeable using wide-angle lenses near a subject that extends away from the camera. Wide lenses (e.g. 24 or 18 mm focal length for a 35 mm camera) magnify apparent distance, causing objects close to the camera to appear considerably larger than objects farther away and causing parallel lines to appear to converge.
For this reason, lens choice in film and photography can influence perception of a scene. The general assumption that “undoctored” photos can’t distort a scene is thus incorrect. This is particularly noticeable in En face portraits. Taken with wide-angle lenses, they generally give an unpleasant impression; making the nose appear far too large and distorting the facial expression.
For good results, portraits should generally be taken using a moderate telephoto lens. Again, for a 35 mm camera, a lens of focal length 85 or 105 mm is considered to be a portrait objective.

The film became the runaway hit of the fall of 2000, tallying more than $300 million worldwide. Now, Greg has managed to earn his way inside the Circle of Trust and things are going great. He and his fiancée Pam (TERI POLO) are excitedly planning their wedding and there s only one tiny, itsy-bitsy little thing left to smooth the way to the altar: the future in-laws need to spend a weekend together. BIG ON BOOKS Hair Care Are $20 shampoos and conditioners worth it? Can good hair-care products be found at the drugstore, or are the expensive salon products really superior? In this comprehensive guide to all things hair care, consumer advocate Paula Begoun answers those questions and more in her reviews of more than 130 drugstore, salon, and department store hair product lines, from Aveda to Matrix and Pantene to Zirh. Thousands of products are described and evaluated according to their performance, reliability, price, and claims. Begoun compares good and bad ingredients, dispels hair-care industry myths, evaluates what helps and what hurts hair, and explains how to tell the difference between reality and hype with respect to a product s performance. Hair sprays, shampoos, conditioners, gels, mousses, pomades, silicone serums, and other items are covered. Her Best Products lists make it easy to find items worth trying in any category. The consumer bible of hair-care products, Don t Go Shopping for Hair-Care Products Without Me shows how to find the best products available at the most economical prices. Ultimately, Begoun shows consumers how to have beautiful tresses without spending a fortune.
My boyfriend s back Shortly after her divorce from former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Hanover reunited with the high school boyfriend who had dumped her during their freshman year at Stanford. He apologized for the breakup, and they rekindled their love affair and married a year later. Upon learning that her experience wasn t unusual, Hanover began interviewing couples with similar stories. Some were separated less than 10 years, others for decades; many were divorced, raising the question of what would have happened if they d followed their hearts to begin with. There s no consensus on that from the experts, according to Hanover, but many will find it hard to disagree with the thesis that first love is often the most lasting. A television host and journalist, Hanover writes in a chatty, accessible style, adopting the tone of the experienced best friend. She can be corny, but she s a realist: she includes a chapter on what happens when rekindled romances go sour the second time around. The sociology and individual stories don t always mesh well, but the anecdotes are so touching and the overall message so inspiring, you d have to be heartless not to feel hopeful after reading this book.

Cosmetics Counter Women spend an extraordinary amount of money on cosmetics $45 billion a year in the U.S. alone. Now in its fourth edition, Don t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me strikes fear in cosmetics-counter consultants everywhere. First off, Begoun has deconstructed ingredient lists. Ever wonder what methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben are doing in your mascara? And what is diazolidinyl urea? All four are potential irritants, and the latter is a preservative that can release formaldehyde, a class A carcinogen. Buyers beware. Begoun also lists which companies are cruelty-free and which continue to conduct animal testing. The majority of the book and that s nearly 800 pages is devoted to reviews of thousands of cosmetics, from cleansers, foundations, alphahydroxyl acids, and moisturizers to lip liners, eye shadows, and concealers, all of which Begoun has personally tested. She s perfectly frank and tells it like it is. (On Revlon s ColorStay Makeup: goes far beyond the claim of It won t come off on him. It won t come off when you want it to. ) You ll learn how to tell when you re being boondoggled by a salesperson, what s overpriced and over hyped, as well as what s overlooked. More than 200 brands are included, along with a helpful summary at the end that lists the best products for each cosmetic category. It should be noted that not only is Begoun a fine consumer advocate, she s also a self-esteem advocate: she mentions time and again that even the best cosmetics won t necessarily improve your life, and that s a point well taken.

Ibn Battuta SHOPPING MALL
*
ased on the life travels and adventures of renowned Arabic scholar, Ibn Battuta, Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall, opening on schedule, promises to be a departure from the ordinary in the context of the entire mall experience. Fourteenth-century explorer, Ibn Battuta, traversed over 75,000 miles in the twentynine years of his travels, beginning when he was just twenty years old. He encountered many dangers and difficulties, but none that eclipsed the wonders that he experienced, or the magnitude of what he managed to do in his lifetime- travel the world in a time before modern means of transportation existed. Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall has thus been designed in correlation with a selection of the places Ibn Battuta traveled, namely the lands that had the most influence and bared the most impact on the adventurer. In consequence, the Mall is comprised of six courts that include the Andalusian court, North African court, Egyptian court, Persian court, Indian court and China court. Each court is a reflection of what each
90

particular region resembled during the 14th century. Thus, Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall is not only a mall, but a lesson in history as well, sure to inspire awe and wonder in all those who visit. Due to the Mall s unique atmosphere, a trip to the mall will never again be the same. All generations alike will find it a pleasurable visit, and the one-stop shop and entertainment concept should be a great draw. Research shows that customers enjoy shopping in thematic environments and simply taking in the atmosphere as they do errands, sample culinary delights
and relax in general. The architecture of the Mall is not only impressive, but awe inspiring as well; design and its sheer size will have a dramatic effect on its visitors. Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall will be unlike any other shopping destination the region has ever encountered. It will transport its visitors to another world taking them to places they have only ever dreamed of. The mall was created for the entire family to enjoy, a celebration and fusion of Islamic belief, history and culture. Dining with a difference Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall whets your appetite With the onset of the ever changing 21st
century, people, their tastes, and their choices are constantly evolving. So too is the future of food courts, and as a result FSR and DesignInc have brought their expertise to the Middle East to do just that. As the chief consultants for Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall s food offering, opening on schedule, they are bringing to Dubai a completely new dimension and an entirely new concept in dining. Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall food court will house 16 food outlets ranging from

Western contemporary to old favourites like Indian and Chinese. Furthermore, as there is an increased demand for healthier food alternatives, the mix will include options such as Japanese food, and sandwich and juice bars. Brings you the whole World Positioned to be DubaiÂ’s most exclusive property development yet, The World project by Nakheel consists of 300 islands strategically positioned to form the shape of the world map. Located off the coast of the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates this unique waterfront real estate will be sold to elite individual investors for private or commercial use. It is thought that many investors will choose to develop their island in a theme reflecting the actual country that the islandÂ’s shape is based upon. Positioned four kilometers offshore from Dubai, at a point halfway between The Palm, Jumeirah and Port Rashid the reclamation of the islands commenced in September 2003 and is expected to take two years. Following reclamation the infrastructure will be put into place and Nakheel will then hand the land over to the investors to develop to their individual requirements. Each island will range between 250,000 to 900,000 square feet with approximately 50 to 100 meters of water between each island. In total the development will cover an area nine kilometers in length and seven kilometers in width and be surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater. Access to the development will be by marine transport only. Once completed in 2008 the development will comprise of 30 million tons of rock and 300 million cubic meters of sand.

in the industry places us on par with international standards and the set up of Exotica Emirates promises to continue the heritage of over 25 years said Etienne Debbane, Chairman, Exotica. Valentine means Flowers Every February, in countries around the world, candy; gifts and especially flowers are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine, the patron saint of love. Flowers and Valentine s Day There is no denying that flowers, particularly scented one, have the power to enhance an amorous mood and make an excellent romantic gift that is both personal and intimate. Picking the right blooming gift requires a degree of consideration and a touch of imagination. However, learning your sweetheart s favourite flower or indoor plant is a smart first move for any would-be Valentine. While almost any plant or arrangement can say, I love you, perhaps no flower

says it as eloquently or as evocatively as does the queen of all romantic flowers, the rose. Coming in many different colours and styles, the rose also is one of the most versatile. Red Roses Red roses are traditionally associated with Valentine s Day, representing passion and true love. The texture of the rose petal is sensuous and silken to the touch, while the deep red evokes ardour and energy. Not only are the senses of sight and touch stimulated by the rose, but also its fragrance hides a scientific secret that aids falling in love . However, red roses are famous not only for their beauty, but also for being more costly on Valentine s Day than other times of the year. Why? It s a question of supply and demand. Worldwide, more than 50 million roses are traded on this day alone. This means a huge global demand for this one product during a very short time, inevitably causing supply problems and, consequently, higher prices. As well, red roses are living things, not uniformly manufactured product, so they vary enormously long- or short stemmed, large- or small-headed, and, of course, with various varieties and qualities. These entire differences can have a great impact on the price of any given rose. How to select your Valentine s Day bou quet For pure romance, a bouquet of deep red roses is probably your best option. Married with a white flower such as gypsophila, the effect is simply stunning, as the small white flowers bring out the
deep red of the larger flower. As well, the quantity is important. To make a really big romantic gesture, think in terms of dozens . Smaller amounts less than 24 will have a lesser impact on the lady in question. However, if it is an ongoing relationship, then smaller bouquets will certainly help keep you in her good books. Having said that, ladies shouldn t forget that flowers are not just for them. More and more women are showing their affection by sending bouquets to their men. Strong, sculptured, exotic flowers are ideal for manly gifts, as are bouquets featuring foliage and berries, as well as flowers. Whatever you offer your loved one this Valentine s Day, make sure you give it your personal touch. Choose the rose yourself and write a heart-felt message on the card. Better still, prepare a romantic dinner at home and arrange the flowers yourself. Taking care of your bouquet Follow the advice below to ensure that your flowers last longer and look lovelier: 1. Make sure your vase is clean. 2. Use fresh lukewarm water with commercial cut-flower food. 3. Strip all leaves below water level. 4. Take at least 3cm off all stems and make a slanted cut with a sharp knife or very sharp scissors. 5. Avoid direct sunlight, heat or drafts, which can shorten flowers lives. 6. Keep flowers away from fruit and remove faded flowers as they occur. 7. Top up the water regularly and add flower food in proportion.

Who prays and serves, and prays some more? And feeds the beggar at the door, And weeps over the love lost long before? It is the Pisces!!! The ruler of Pisces is Neptune. Its symbol represents a pair of sea horses or sea lions yoked together. They dwell in the innermost regions of the sea, which is symbolic of life after death or regeneration. The image also represents a duality, the struggle of the spiritual soul within the physical body. Personal Traits: Pisceans are the most malleable of the twelve signs. They possess a gentle, patient nature, but one that is in want of molding. They can be impressed by and completely absorbed into their environment. Pisces adapts to their surroundings,, good or bad. They are generous, friendly, good natured people with a true sense of kindness and compassion. They are sensitive to everything around them including the feelings of others. They are popular folk because of their easygoing and likable manner. They have an uncanny sense of perceiving what a person is in need of, and delivering it. They are not initiators, but rather allow circumstances and events to motivate them, and then they respond. Pisceans are not practical people. They are too ephemeral for normal day-to-day living in the world. They are sensitive and instinctual rather than intellectual or mechanical. When, however, they do find the right container, they are capable of some incredible deeds. They will become completely absorbed in a chosen path, to the exclusion of everything else. Positive Traits: Pisceans do best in an environment where they can exercise their imaginations and intuitive nature. They are gifted artistically. They are versatile and tend to understand things by absorption rather than logic. They are loyal, home-loving, kind and generous. They are receptive to new ideas and circumstances. They often make excellent artists in all fields because they have great imaginations. They possess wonderful creativity that is demonstrated in music, literature, drama and art. They appreciate luxury and pleasure, and are ripe for new sensations. When they travel, they prefer remote, exotic places. Main positive traits: Understanding, instinctive, compassionate, artistic, sacrificing and charitable. Negative Traits: Piscean characters are absent minded. They don t fare well in a controlled or fixed environment and generally rebel against convention. Pisceans wage only a personal battle. They can be so subtle, sensitive and emotional that they end up being a real drain on ones resources. In business they can be unreliable, idle, careless, impractical and ineffective. The negative side of Pisces is often fickle, a gossip, indiscreet, and gullible. Pisces is easily misled because they want to believe. No matter how often they are led astray by vacant

promises, they keep the faith and go on looking for their personal ideal. Their dreamy and impractical natures are a source of distress to those close to them. Being a mixture of an optimist and a pessimist, they find it difficult to make up their minds on any issue. Main Negative traits: Pessimistic, impractical, unrealistic, fearful, emotionally restrained, melancholy. Profession : In the career department, they are better working by themselves than for someone else. Their sympathy equips them for careers in charity, catering to the needy, as a nurse, looking after the sick, or as a veterinarian, caring for animals. They have a love of water, and can be found in work that keeps them near the sea. Pisces creativity includes a natural ability to imitate or mirror another person as well as enter into their feelings. These attributes make them wonderful character actors, and many Pisceans find great fulfillment on stage or in films. Pisces sense of others, is an ability that makes them effective in civil service and the legal arena. Many in law enforcement and the judicial system are Pisceans. Their intuitive and spiritual qualities can lead them into careers in religion or to service as mediums and mystics. Still others are creative cooks and chefs. Because of their versatility and plasticity, they often follow several vocations during their lifetime. Lucky Stone Aquamarine, which is a member of the Beryl family of stones as emerald. Meaning - sea water it s not hard to figure out that it derives this name due to its color being similar to that of the ocean. Advise for the Pisceans Whether actually sick, or suffering from hypochondria, they are so demanding that they can wear out anybody s patience. When they feel rejected or lonely they may turn to drugs or alcohol for comfort. They should avoid this attitude. They lack decisiveness and are easily diverted from their purposes. Pisceans are most likely to suffer from nervous disorders, insomnia, anemia and despondency. They should live in bright, sunny and dry climates and should take good exercise. Pisceans should avoid their restlessness to make life more meaningful. Origins in Mythology The constellation of Pisces appears as a fish swimming in the waters that pour from Aquarius. In Babylonian times, this star formation was associated with the gods Oannes and Dagon. These were water deities in the form of fish. Also in this constellation is the Leash, upon which were tied the two fish goddesses, Anunitum and Simmah. In Greek mythology, Pisces is associated with the great beast Typhon. This fearsome creature belonged to the earlier age of the Titans, and was a terrifying force even for the greatest of the gods. At one time Typhon attacked Mount Olympus, the abode of the gods. To escape from his wrath, each deity took the form of an animal. Zeus himself, shifted into the likeness of a ram. Aphrodite, and her son Eros, escaped the beast by transforming into a pair of fish and swam away into the Euphrates River. The goddess Minerva placed the image of the fishes in the heavens so that the event would not be forgotten. Now that the first month of the New Year is out of the way, we are faced with a long stretch of months ahead. Some resolutions are still in effect, while others have fallen to the waste side. Whatever your issues may be, Amina can help you find the answers Q. I recently got engaged and have started to plan my wedding. There is a certain look I m after, but my mother-in-law does not agree. Our tastes differ entirely and I am afraid that I may have a wedding that I don t like. How do I satisfy my mother-in-law and still get the wed ding of my dreams? A. This depends on how much your mother-in-law is willing to compromise. The way you deal with each other in this situation may create the foundation of your entire relationship, so it is advisable for you to be tactful. What you can do is try sitting down with her and explaining that this is an important day a reflection of the love you share with her son, and that you always dreamed of having it look a certain way. If her taste is not that bad, you can tactfully ask her advice and then say oh, but look at how nice this is , or that s nice, but let s try it in another color. One thing you should not do is pass the message on through your finance. Getting him caught between his mother and wife-to-be is definitely not a situation any man would like, and the outcome may not be helpful to your relationship. For her, the situation may be one where she feels that her son is finally leaving her and that this is her last chance to control some aspect of his life. In this case, you should practice extra caution. Whatever your choice, this is your opportunity to strategically establish some boundaries with your mother-in-law, and let her know when and when not to interfere with you and your husband s life.
If you have any quiries, post them to Amina at P.O.Box - 7306
and you could win a great prize.

ASK AMINA
Amina Abdel Halim Chatting with my friends one day I found myself giving an enormous amount of advice on relationships, health, diet, and career. Believing that most women possess similar questions this column arose from those conversations. Whatever topic you wish to discuss for all those sneaking questions you laugh over with your friends (or for those you don t mention) this is your chance to ask. This month s questions came from the start of the New Year, the breaking of resolutions and the frustrations that come from planning a wedding. I decided to bring these questions into public and shed some light on these topics. Join my circle of friends and begin sharing your questions, or supplying answers. I look forward to hearing from you all and finding solutions together.
Q. I am 31 years old and very overweight and promised myself that this would be the year to lose the excess baggage. Although the first few weeks of January were well, I already let go of my healthy eating habits. I don t know why I keep failing at losing weight. It seems as though I am successful in all aspects of my life but this. It is very discouraging. Can you help? A. Well, the first mistake you re making is seeing this as a failure, and that you ve let go. Weight issues are common in most women, and we tend to measure our progress in extremes: if you eat only fruits and vegetables one day, you succeed, and eating a cheeseburger means failing miserably. This is not how our daily diet attitudes should be. It took a lot of time to put on the weight, but we expect to drop it all rapidly and overnight, and we label certain foods as markers of failure, or imperfection. The start of the New Year, or the first day of the month, or week, is usually when our diets begin, and to blunder in the middle means the entire week or month is ruined. This is not true. There is no specific day assigned as the best time to begin or end healthily eating habits. And it is never too late. Most diets fail because people choose to give-in to the feeling of failure, but if you start each day anew, each moment can be a new triumph. No one said weight loss is easy, and for most of us it is defiantly easier (and more enjoyable) to put weight on than take it off, but think of it not as a crash diet to get X amount kilos off, but as a new journey you re taking with yourself a learning experience. The best diets, those that help keep the weight off, are those that are gradual. Start by making minor changes like not eating after 7:00 pm, or not drinking sodas. Then, after you get used to that change, add another. No one said you have to tackle everything at once, and aiming for immediate perfection is usually a one-way ticket to disappointment. Re-arranging our thought processes to a more positive can-do attitude is usually the best path to success. Overcoming the hurdles and getting back on track after a set back can provide you with enough energy to keep going, probably with more drive and determination than before. So, think of it not as a failure, but as an opportunity to make you stronger. And you will succeed if you believe you can.
