Crystals The Healing Power of
Gemstones seem to serve more than ornamental purposes. Today s new-age medical practitioners swear by their healing properties both for the mind and body. Birjees Hussain examines this modern medical therapy.
/
emstones and crystals have been around for years. For centuries people have mined and mounted them on rings or as pendants at the end of a chain or as earrings. We wear them because they make us look better. But is that the only reason? Well, modern day healers believe that gemstones and crystals not only make us look good but if used properly they have the power to help us feel better. But this notion of crystals as instruments of healing is not just contemporary. During the ancient Mayan civilisation and in the Native American culture crystals were used in religious ceremonies and for healing the mind and the spirit. In fact, crystals were even used to draw out good and evil. So what is crystal therapy and does it work?
10
March 2005
How do they work? It s hard to say exactly how they work but mythical tales, such as those of the Lost City of Atlantis, tell how the people of Atlantis believed that certain stones had the power to store and then radiate whatever energy they soaked up, thereby healing whatever was ailing them, whether it was mental, physical or spiritual. Crystal healing is the use of crystals, which are usually cut from quartz, to restore lost energy in the body. It s based on the premise that crystals are energy converters turning vibrations from the body into electrical fields or charges. Experts believe that our bodies consist of seven specific points on the body called meridians in Oriental medicine. These seven points are believed to be energy centres which rotate at various speeds releasing energy for the body s vital life forces; they regulate the flow of energy in the body. It is believed that if any one of these points is out of balance you feel unwell whether it s spiritually or physically. In a typical treatment, usually performed by a crystal therapy practitioner, crystals are strategically placed along the seven meridians so that they help to stimulate the flow of that energy through them. However, if you don t want to be treated at a clinic or by a practitioner there are simpler alternatives to try in the privacy of your own home. For example, wearing the right crystals or placing them around your home or even holding, wearing or carrying them is said to promote a
sense of well-being. Some people even swear by using them in drinking water and in their bath waters. Colours count It seems that certain colours have a certain effect and so do the number of facets the crystal has. Red, orange and yellow stones are reputed to produce energy, clear and aquamarine ones aid the healing process and lavender and blue have a calming effect. Further even-faced stones create the optimum energy whereas odd numbered ones enhance the healing process. So how do you choose one? Follow your instincts Do you choose it or does it choose you? Experts believe that you don t actually go out and choose a stone; they believe that it chooses you. When you re out shopping for a stone you might, for some inexplicable reason, be drawn to a certain stone. It could be for many reasons. For example, it could be because a certain stone relates to one of your meridians which, at the time, happens to be in a state of imbalance. In fact, some people believe that wearing or carrying the right stone can help in finding a spouse because it creates the positive energy needed in attracting one.

Which stone? Different stones are reputed to aid different problems. Whilst some target our emotional well being others are said to aid our physical ailments. Some people buy stones, not because they’re feeling unwell but because they want to create positive vibes around themselves. If you’re planning to go shopping for a stone but don’t know what to pick, here are some stones for you to consider. Amethyst Amethyst is lavender blue in colour and has many facets. It is chiefly used for meditation purposes and is said to promote a feeling of tranquillity by easing stress. It’s also reputed to bring relief from headaches and to help insomnia. Amber Believe it or not this is fossilised tree resin and, like the tree, is golden brown in colour. It seems to have a soothing effect on the mind and body but at the same time it strengthens the body’s physical traits. It’s also said to give us purpose by helping us choose the right path in life. And if you’re a student about take exams perhaps carrying this stone in your pocket will promote your intellect. Chalcedony Rose Chalcedony Rose is a fine-grained quartz that tends towards grey in colour. It’s named after the place it was found in, which was in Chalcedon in Asia Minor. It was a sacred stone to Native Americans and the Tibetans. This stone boasts many properties including dispelling anger, overcoming jealousy and warding off negative feelings. Many practitioners believe that it prevents infections of the throat and mouth. Bloodstone This stone is a variation of the Chalcedony Rose and occurs in both red and green forms. The first use of this stone dates back to ancient Egypt and Atlantis when it was used to revitalise and calm the body. In addition to its spiritual benefits this stone is said to possess enormous health benefits. It’s said to cleanse the blood and the lungs, promote blood clots and to help heal haemorrhoids. Bloodstone is the most mystical of all gems and is supposed to possess real magical properties. It’s reputed to attract wealth to its wearer and is especially lucky for those born in March, so wear it with good luck. Sunstone This stone is mined in the state of Oregon, USA, from partially decomposed rock. It’s a rich, golden-brown colour and under the right conditions reflects green, red and orange light. If it’s placed in front of a white candle in your home the stone is alleged to disperse protective energies throughout the house. In terms of health, if it’s worn it is said to promote your general well-being by giving you energy when you’re feeling offcolour or stressed. The stone is also alleged to enhance your leadership skills and to make you more attractive to the opposite sex. So, if you’ve been searching for a spouse but have so far been unsuccessful, wearing this stone may help you. A final word The number of stones available is countless and whether you believe that they have the power to heal or not it’s always worth trying them. But remember that you should never decide to replace conventional medicine with crystal therapy. If you do decide to try this form of therapy it’s best to use it as a supplement to conventional medicine. Moreover, as with all forms of medical treatments, your faith that it will work will contribute enormously to the results you achieve. Modern day practitioners believe that crystals work by focussing the energy radiated by a person’s thoughts. The power of positive thinking, therefore, is important to achieving positive results.

POSSESSION
P IAGE T PLAYS ON ECCENTRICITY Possession is an unmistakably Piaget game. Piaget creates a new way of writing Possession, for her.. and even for him. Possession is asserting itself more boldly than ever. The new possession is every inch the eccentric icon. You like the game? Still fired by passion, the Possession range welcomes a newcomer: an impetuous ring with a delightfully off-beat message. The women who wears it lives by one rule only and follows a single- minded urge: Possession.

e selected FREY WILLE jewellery collection (two design sets) to one of the greatest Austrian artists of the 20th century: The painter, architect and philosopher Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000). Both jewellery sets Spiral of Life and Street-rivers uniquely capture the dreamscapes of this visionary painter and feature key design elements created by him, to be a perfect suggestion for a gift for dearst mom.. During his lifetime Hundertwasser was considered to be a WorldBeautifier and a rebel. He became world-renowned for his cheerful and colourful paintings of a paradise on earth. He believed that beauty is a panacea (a universal remedy). The Hundertwasser jewellery collection by FREY WILLE is not only visually brilliant, it is also an homage to Hundertwasser s art in its own right.
Spiral of Life This set is inspired by a main motif in Hundertwasser s artistic universe: The spiral. For Hundertwasser it is the symbol of life and death, the act of creation and destruction, because the spiral as opposed to the circle never returns to its own point of origin.

oday s life is all hi-tec and go go go . People seem to have no time for friends, sleep or lunch. But little do they realise that, unless they take that all important break they ll eventually burn out. Sadly, though, with the busy lifestyle that is so prevalent in today s mobile phone society, few people have time to themselves but unless they do they re minds and bodies will be exhausted. This is such a well known fact so why is it so alien to so many people? Whether you re a housewife or indeed in the outside work environment, there is no doubt that you do need a break. Management guru, Tom Peters, once said, People need to rejuvenate themselves, especially these upside down days. He advised, To toughen up, lighten up. And it doesn t have to be a whole day; it could be half a day or just a couple of hours once a week. With the hectic lifestyle that is so common for today s on-the-go girl most women don t have time to visit a salon? But lack of time may not be the only deterring factor. Women can often end up spending a fortune on visiting a salon or a spa on a regular basis. A good spa where you have the full works, like a facial, manicure, pedicure and perhaps even a massage may end up

costing you an arm and a leg, causing more stress. So what do you do if you haven t the time or cash to fork out on a regular visit to a spa? With a little bit of imagination and a lot of creativity it s possible to create a spa right in your living room or, if it s a nice day, the balcony. It s possible to enjoy a good manicure, pedicure and even a facial, and it doesn t have to cost us a pretty penny. Here are some great ways to give yourself that all-important me-time. Firstly, put your handbags away, ladies. Instead of a trip to the supermarket, just look through your kitchen cupboards and bathroom cabinets. I guarantee that, most of what you ll need you ll already have. But first, let s set the atmosphere. Set the scene It s all about the ambience and you d be surprised at what you can create in the comfort of your home at a fraction of the cost. Colourful, scented candles, soft music, some fresh flowers, herbal tea, a couple of platters of finger foods and a basket of personal care products should set the mood. The balcony is the perfect spot at this time of year. You have your wicker chairs, your greenery and a couple of tables to hold all
c o s t !
you need for your home spa. But if the outdoors is uninviting you can set exactly the same scene indoors. Then invite a couple of friends round to enjoy the spa with you. The Facial For this we re going to follow a 6 step regime but we re going to improvise by making the most of whatever we have in the kitchen or bathroom. And we re going to prepare our products before our facial begins. Cleansing Using whatever cleanser you have in your bathroom dip a washcloth into some lukewarm water and, with a few drops of the cleanser, rub it gently in circular motions all over your face, then rinse. Toning For this add the juice of half a lemon and some slices of fresh cucumber to a glass of mineral water. Let the solution stand at room temperature for half an hour. The lemon is an astringent and the cucumber is both calming and soothing. Exfoliate To keep your face glowing you need to remove the dead skin cells regularly otherwise it will look dull and sallow. To exfoliate, mash a ripe papaya and mix it with 3 tablespoons of oats. Gently rub your face with this mixture. It can get a little messy
Spa.qxd
16/03/05
03:16
Page 19
so try doing this with a towel on your lap or over the sink. The papaya softens the dead skin cells and the rubbing action of the oats helps in removing them. Steam/Extraction This opens the pores and preps the skin for extraction. Add a couple of green tea bags and a few drops of camomile to a bowl of hot water and hold your face over it under a towel for several minutes? Make sure your face is 12 inches from the bowl to prevent scalding. The next step is to extract. Take a clean washcloth and gently squeeze your skin between your fingers. Mask For a home-made mask take 6 ripe strawberries and 3 tablespoons of plain yoghurt. Strawberries contain salicylic acid and vitamin C to revitalise the skin and the yoghurt acts as a hydrant. Leave the mask on for 10 minutes and then remove with a washcloth. Moisturise Any shop-bought moisturiser will do. A decent one should cost under Dh40. The Pedicure You might have to splash out a little for this but rest assured the cost is going to be at less than a fraction of what you might pay at the spa. This is a 4 step process.
Soak Half fill a plastic tub big enough and deep enough for your feet with warm water. Add thinly sliced oranges to the water followed by 2 drops of tea tree oil (which is an antiseptic) and the petals of a red rose. Put the tub on the floor where you intend to sit, or carry the tub to the balcony if the weather s good. While your feet are soaking you can clip and file your toe-nails and remove the dead skin from your heels. Scrub Now remove your feet from the water and scrub it with a foot scrub. You need to make your foot-scrub using a 50:50 mixture of oil and sea salt. You also want to remove your cuticles using lemon juice and an orange stick. Massage/Moisturise Next massage your feet with any hand or body lotion you might have lying around. Pay attention to each toe and rub the soles of your feet with your fist. Then wrap each foot in a towel warm straight from the dryer. The warmth of the towels helps the lotion sink deep into the skin, moisturising and relaxing them. Now sit back and let the moisturiser and the warm towels do their work. Enjoy a nice cup of herbal tea (how about camomile?), listen to some soft music or read your favourite magazine.
Polish Finally, take your favourite nail polish and paint your toe nails. Tips Make your products before you actually begin your facial or pedicure. Use whatever you have in your kitchen or bathroom cabinets. When applying moisturiser to your face, use only upward motions. Why not make it a girls day in? And, gentlemen, aside from the nail polish, you could give yourself a facial or manicure too. Wasn t that fun? And what s so amazing about your spa is that it cost you next to nothing which means that you can do it as often as you like.

Mother s Day is the day we take the time to honour our mothers for all their hard work in taking care of us. But this isn t just a celebration started by greeting card companies. It has its origins in ancient worship and religious ceremonies. Birjees Hussain looks at its origins and suggests ways of making it special for your mother.
MOTHER S DAY
A DAY FOR HONOURING MUM
9
e all think of Mother s Day as a holiday created by the greeting cards company Hallmark s solely for monetary purposes. But it might interest you to learn that Mother s Day is an ancient tradition which has turned into a day dedicated to our mothers. Ancient celebrations There are many stories of how Mother s Day came about. The earliest records go back to around 250BC in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome and really were not related to mothers at all; at least not mortal mothers anyway. The Ancient Greeks worshipped their own deities and Mother s Day was actually a form of worship directed to Rhea, the ancient Greek Goddess who was supposed to be mother of all Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also worshipped a mother Goddess called Cybele and their worship, known as the Ides of March, lasted for three days from 15th-18th March. I hope that these strange ancient practices haven t dampened your enthusiasm for an event that has become an annual ritual for you. But if it has don t start to abandon it because it seems that the Mother s Day that we re all familiar with actually only has religious origins. In fact Christians celebrated it in honour of Mary, mother of Jesus. It was later extended in England to honour all moth-
Nobody knows of the work it makes, To keep the home together. Nobody know the steps it takes, Nobody knows but Mother Anonymous ers on Mothering Sunday which is observed on the 4th Sunday in Lent. Celebration s today Although the celebration has its origins in Christianity it is now observed in over 46 countries, regardless of religion or culture, but surprisingly not all on the same day. In the old days sons and daughters used to honour their mothers by trying to be with her no matter where they were. And if they couldn t get to her they d try and get a letter to her which in the early 18 and 1900s probably took weeks because there was no swift postal service. Now, no matter where you are or what you do, you probably celebrate this special day by showering your mother with gifts ranging from cards, flowers and chocolates. But if you ve exhausted all gift ideas why not try something different this year like doing something for your mum rather than buying something for her? Try this for Mother s Day Dads are entitled to at least four weeks off from work every year. Housework is
equally, if not more, hard work but traditionally people think that unless you bring home a pay cheque you re not actually doing anything. Do people really think that mothers and wives just sit at home painting their toenails? Just how wrong can the world be? So here are some things you can do to change this perception. Clean up after yourself When Mother s Day approaches most people go straight to the florist or a gift shop and the idea of giving your mum a day off from housework doesn t usually occur to anyone. And it s one thing that your mum would really appreciate. If it s a school day or working day why not wake up a little earlier, make your bed and tidy your room. After you ve showered please don t leave the bathroom a mess. Put your towel in the laundry basket or even put the washing machine on before you leave, clean the washbasin and generally tidy up around the house before you leave. And serve your mum breakfast if you re old enough to use the cooker. Then when you get home, let her put her feet up, give her a cup of tea and make the evening meal. And dad, if the children are too small, do help them out even if you have to order in!

Breakfast in bed Even if you re not a breakfast person or just a cereal eater why not serve your mum breakfast in bed. Here s a simple menu for you to try. Serving suggestion Tray, doily large enough to cover tray, small crystal vase containing single stemmed rose cut to size, cocktail stick
and 2 blank cards (3cm x 2 cm) in size. Cover the tray with doily. Arrange the plates of fruit salad and French toast side by side towards the front of the tray. Place the vase near the top left hand corner of the tray and a small glass of freshly squeezed orange juice with a slice of lemon on the rim near the right hand corner.
Fruit salad Ingredients Half a melon, selection of soft fruits (kiwi, strawberries, raspberries and other soft fruits you can find) diced. Method Scoop out the melon seeds and cut off the bottom so that it s steady on a plate. Fill the melon with the diced kiwi, halved strawberries and any other soft fruits you can find. Now make syrup with sugar and water. Heat it until the mixture turns thick and then pour over the fruit. Place the melon on a plate. French toast Ingredients Two eggs, 1 teaspoon of sugar and 2-3 drops vanilla essence 2 half inch slices cut out of a fresh crusty roll. Toasted almonds, sliced Method Beat the egg, sugar and the vanilla essence until the mixture is light and frothy. Dip the bread in the egg mixture until it s coated on both sides and then fry in a lightly oiled frying pan. Fry until both sides turn brown. Arrange the bread in a crisscross fashion on a plate and then sprinkle the almonds over them.
24
March 2005
Now write brief messages (or poems) to your mum on both cards and stick them to the cocktail stick back to back so that enough of the stick is still visible at the bottom of the message. Stick this message into the rim of the melon. The simple things No matter where the idea of honouring our mothers comes from it really is a thoughtful way to show our appreciation. Moreover, why just confine it to our mothers. Our fathers deserve a day too, don t they? And that s why we now have Father s Day to honour our dads. And remember that these auspicious days don t have to turn into a greeting cards day. You don t have to be taken in by all the media hype and spend vast sums of money on expensive gifts and cards. The beauty of this day is that traditionally children hand made their gifts and adults can follow their example. The simplest things make it such a special day. Your mother isn t looking for expensive items but if you can afford to splash out, do go ahead. You could make a call from wherever you are, give her a hand made card or some home made sweets or chocolates and, if you really want to splurge, visit a florist. Happy Mother s Day!

Majestic Femininity Z U H A I R M U R A D Spring / Summer Collection 2005
Zuhair Murad conquers a new kingdom where everything revolves solely around opulence and femininity. It is of royal preciosity; a haute couture that is indeed very haute jewelry, with dress-parures; emeralds, ruby s, diamonds, crystals that garnish the silhouette, here in a matter as such, further out like an astral ribbon or a neck sized choker; imposing stature for an august appearance. Inlays, embroideries, thus equal to the work of silversmiths , authentic treasures that give elegance an unprecedented value: having become like a cherished box of jewels she illuminates all hopes and dreams. Within the empire of his dreams, in a magical land where a yesterday is without clouds and where only the best of epochs and sagas exist, he transports us into the heart of a court, similar to that of the palace of a thousand and one nights; a place where beauty and luxury prevail. His women possess imperial grace: Immortal Cleopatra, princess of our time or of a make-believe realm, highnesses whose subjects are forever fashion and today s beauties. He adorns them with dresses with colors of the sun, the moon, and of flamboyant bliss. Leaps of colors and spirit, the profusion of motifs, jewelry, pearls, tiaras, and long necklaces are like touches of radiant whims.

As in most parts of the world, female lawyers are out numbered by their male peers. But what they lack in number, they more than make-up for with their success, and style.

n this interview, Esprit talks to Lara Haidar, senior partner at therightslawyers, a Dubai-based law firm offering legal expertise and services, handling a number of local and multinational clients in the media and entertainment sectors, as well as the IT and telecommunications industries. Looking comfortable and stylish in a black, floral-printed top and short skirt, Lara recounts how she became a lawyer, and shares with us her passion not only for law, but for shopping as well. Esprit: Have you always wanted to be a lawyer? Lara Haidar: Studying in a war-torn country such as Lebanon was not easy. With electricity rationing, continuous shoot-outs and bombing being a day and night reality, motivation was a feat in itself. I didnÂ’t specifically like studying

much but I guess I was always ambitious and determined. I finished university with two degrees, a BA in English Literature and an LLB in Law, but law was my passion. I loved the subject matter and always found the career glamorous. I wanted to be the first really established female lawyer and, although I am probably not the first in this country, I am one of the very few female lawyers that has set up her own firm. I set up therightslawyers with my husband, Mark, in September 2003. What kind of law do you practice? I specialise in intellectual property and media/entertainment although our firm also focuses on information technology and telecommunications as well. The difference with our firm is that we are the first and only specialist law firm totally dedicated and catering to the Creative
Industries, not only in the UAE but across the Middle East. Our approach to law is different as well and we bring a lot of creativity to our work which is very much needed in the industries we service. I love what I do and I love the kind of practice we have set up. We are continuously raising the bar in the profession and that is both interesting and rewarding. What challenges did or do you face as a woman lawyer? When I graduated and joined the working world, I was faced with a lot of sexism in the field. Men dominated really the legal profession and women were mostly hired because they worked harder (normally to prove themselves!). The number of law firms I would consider joining was also limited and competition was high to get into them. But I did! Then I moved to Dubai and other challenges were here to

greet me. It took time but I finally joined a multinational law firm and by the time I left I was managing a department. That may have satisfied a lot of people, but I guess my ambition was still one step ahead of me. Today, the challenges that face me are only personal: how to keep improving myself and expanding the firm. How do you describe your wardrobe? Eclectic! I m a chameleon when it comes to changing styles and looks, sometimes my friends don t even recognise me! You will find everything in my closet, from high couture Lebanese designer evening
gowns, to Indian slippers, to anything that s on the shelves in boutiques these days. I do like frilly and eccentric fashion though, so although I keep some more classical pieces in my wardrobe, I prefer fashion that screams, Check this out. What shoes/clothes do you typically go to work with? I used to love corporate suits and would always dress them up or down with accessories and style. Since setting up the firm though, I would say that I dress up in chic/casual with a touch of frilly fashion here and there (and only wear suits when I go to the Notary Public or the Police
Station). I guess it goes with the kind of firm we have set up and the creative industries that we service. Clients often comment that they love our office environment because it is so relaxed and casual. The only dress code I have in the office is no jogging suits. What are your favourite brands shoes, make-up/cosmetics? I love Dior shoes. I wear them both at work and to go out. The day collection is varied so that I can find shoes that are both glamorous and comfortable to work in. With clothes, I have been a regular fan of Dolce & Gabbana for several years now. I find Italian fashion sexier than others, although there are other girly and stylish brands I also dress from including Nanette Lepore and Catherine Malandrino. There is just so much out there. For work, I buy a lot of Karen Millen which mixes fashion and practicality very well. I love BVLGARI jewellery. I love most of their collections and think the boutique has impeccable service for both one-time shoppers and recurrent clients (at all their outlets). I also love Chopard watches. I would buy another three straightaway if I had the opportunity. They are pretty and fun. For cosmetics, I have been buying Dior and Lancôme cosmetics for ages. What do you usually buy when you go shopping? Well, I m a brands person through and through, which isn t a wonder since a big part of what I do is dealing with brands (registering them, protecting them etc.). I am also a loyal kind of customer so when I find something that I like, be it a brand or a service, I tend to stick to it. There may be others, but as long as I am happy with what I m getting, I don t feel the need to look elsewhere. So, for instance, I have been going to the same beauty salon since I got to Dubai seven years ago! That doesn t mean that I do not try new things, just that I am content when I get the right service. I guess the most important factor I consider in how and what I buy is that it must suit me. I know my figure and my colours very well and therefore adapt the style that I like to them.

CATHERINE ZETA JONES The 1999 Oscars was the break-out year for Catherine. The moment she stepped on the red carpet with her strapless red Versace gown, she became an instant glamour icon, and she hasn t fumbled since. Her style is one of simple elegance, highlighting her true beauty. Even when she was pregnant, she showed much pizzazz, truly earning her place among Hollywood s fashion icon.
many years been a show stopper for all the right reasons glamorous stars walk on the red carpet in their equally glamorous outfits. It is the one moment when Hollywood is truly larger-than-life, bigger than the medium through the world views its films. The competition isn t anymore just about the golden Oscar, but about who wore the most memorable and glamorous ensemble. As a matter of fact, post-Oscar parties and publicities tend to talk more about the event s best and worst dressed than the actual winners themselves. Rightly or wrongly, the Oscars has become so much about fashion as it is about films and performances. This year was no exception. Hollywood superstars made their presence felt with stunning gowns, tuxedos and glittering accessories from the best and biggest names in fashion. And from among a thousand stars, we ve chosen some who have consistently shown impeccable taste for style in Tinseltown s biggest event. From vintage Valentino gowns, to exciting Versace ensembles, here s our list of the best dressed actresses on the Oscar red carpet of all time.

JULIA ROBERTS Julia has long proven that she s definitely more than just a pretty woman. The certified glamour girl gave Hollywood a glamour girl icon not seen since Audrey Hepburn. In 2004, she appeared at the Academy Awards looking effortlessly gorgeous in a Giorgio Armani dusky pink satin gown gathered in the middle by a sparkling diamond clasp.
HALLE BERRY Coming in style must be a lucky charm for some actresses. Julia did it in 2001, winning the Oscar for Best Actress after winning the hearts of everyone in her Valentino gown. Halle pulled off the same feat in 2002, when she wore an Elie Saab creation. It was an unforgettable ensemble, sexy and daring, yet classic in elegance. Who was worn a gown in previous Oscars that resembles hers? None. Her long, deep-red skirt is stunningly elegant; but the sheer top covered in embroidered flowers and leaves is at once unique and stylish.
J E N N I F E R LOPEZ With Jennifer Lopez, you either hate her or love her. Her choices may be different, at time too outlandish, but her consistently being a risk-taker earns her spot in our best dressed list. Jennifer loves taking chances and we adore her for it. Her choice for the 2001 Oscars was particularly amazing: a Chanel gown which was the perfect combination of contemporary and sexy; timelessness and elegance. The grey, sheer top is very sexy, while the high-waisted, long sweeping skirt is glamour at its best.
KATE WINSLET We have always thought that Kate would stamp her class on the Oscars. She was so beautiful in Titanic, and her choice for the 2005 Oscars would ensure she will be long remembered. She was gorgeous in a blue dress with plunging neckline, ruched bodice and softly draped skirt from Badgley Mischka. She wore an odd color with finesse and came out a winner on a night no one dared to dress up, except for a chosen few. Of those, Kate was in a class by herself. NAOMI WATTS Naomi could have been just one of the stars at the 2004 Oscars. But going to the red carpet in a shimmering, strapless beaded Versace dress ensured she will be hugging the headline along with the likes of Angelina for being a cut above the rest. It didn t hurt that she was wearing a pair of Jimmy Choo s, tiny diamond earrings and Christian Dior make-up that gave her a stunningly flawless look.

Jealousy, thy name is woman This is a well known saying but really without any true merit because there s a misconception associated that only women tend to feel jealous but the fact of the matter is that anyone can experience this complex and most destructive of all emotions. Moreover, there s more than one type of jealousy. Aside from relationship jealousy, there is sibling rivalry and professional rivalry. Examples are children being jealous of their friends or siblings, men of their spouses or friends and colleagues of other colleagues. Sometimes the jealousy is unfounded, sometimes it s not and, in most instances, usually involves two people and one other factor; that factor may or may not be human.
TAME YOUR GREEN-EYED MONSTER
What is jealousy? Jealousy is defined in so many ways but in general it s a complex emotional reaction to a perceived threat either to one s relationship, one s professional career or to anything that one values. Most people believe that jealousy stems from an irrational fear caused by feelings of losing control of anything. Those who feel jealous do so because they sense, whether wrongly or not, that what they value most is under threat of being destroyed. That thing could be a relationship to a spouse, a sibling, a friend, a boss or a way of life. It also has different degrees some of which lie on a very fine line. Despite this, some forms of jealousy can be healthy because they can often improve whatever the problem is. Often they can help keep a relationship on its toes; if both parties are aware that their spouses have jealous tendencies or that their actions, however small, can spark jealousy in their spouse then they re encouraged not to take each other for granted and to be more appreciative of one another. Mild jealousy can also motivate a person to do better in school, the office or in life. This is fine
46
March 2005
We all feel jealous at some stage of our lives but whilst in most cases it might be so mild as to be overlooked, in extreme cases it can become destructive to the individual and he s entire life. Birjees Hussain examines this most powerful of all emotions.
when the feeling is subtle but what if it s so strong that it crosses the line to irrational? The moment the line is crossed it can become dangerous and sometimes even life-threatening not only to the individual feeling the emotion but to those who may or may not be causing it. It can leave the parties involved feeling inadequate and having to constantly walk on eggshells. Marriages have been known to break up, children have been bullied and colleagues have been assaulted as a result of it. It s really about control but control in an angry and, sometimes, violent way. So, how do you know if you or your loved one is feeling jealous? Not just ire Those who feel jealous often exhibit a range of emotions and behaviours some of which can be misinterpreted by those around them. For example, someone s anguish may be perceived to stem from stress or exhaustion rather than jealousy and the gut reaction of those around the person is to ignore it, hoping it ll pass. Of course ignoring something proves to be counterproductive because in the eyes of
the person concerned you appear to be insensitive to their needs thus escalating the problem further. So how do you nip it in the bud? It s simple. Watch for other physical manifestations such as sudden aggressive behaviour, illnesses or excessive sadness or withdrawal. The domino effect It s sad that people who have a tendency to feel jealous can t always control it and that s frustrating for them. They can t help it even though it may be affecting not just them but those closest to them; it can cause mental and physical fatigue and it can be emotionally draining. But the most destructive effect of all is that it can often drive people to do the very thing that they were suspected of doing but weren t. In short, living with a jealous person is as frustrating as being one. Don t get mad, get even Intense jealousy can really have adverse affects on people s behaviour, usually inciting them to retaliate. People say that the best form of revenge is to live better but for some walking away is not an option. For example: One woman was so irate at being

twinges of envy at some point in their lives but it s usually on a small scale and not worth worrying about. But when it reaches disturbing levels it needs addressing. Controlling any strong emotion requires enormous will-power and, in extreme cases, counselling may be the only solution. If it s a mild feeling and recurring, experts believe that it s possible to talk yourself out of it. So if you are prone to it, try the following exercises. 1. Ask yourself some questions. Is the reason for your jealousy real or imagined? Is your reaction helping? 2. Give yourself a pep-talk. Say positive things about yourself aloud. 3. Talk to the parties involved to seek reassurance. Chances are you ll get it. It s not easy to be objective with such a subjective emotion and not everyone can assess whether they re the jealous type. So we ve compiled a brief questionnaire for you.
dumped for another that she keyed her ex s car. Another smashed her ex s car windscreen. He later tried to sue her but was unable to prove she was responsible for the damage; all he had to go on was a feeling. One man was so jealous that he kept making nuisance calls to his ex s office in an effort to get her fired. Another kept dragging his ex through numerous small claims courts in bogus compensation claims; he claimed he lent
her money during their relationship. She replied it was a gift and the only reason she was being sued was because she dumped him. Cars have been damaged, homes have been vandalised, clothes have been burned and co-worker have had fisticuffs in the name of jealousy. How do you control it? But not everybody reacts this way. Some people have been known to walk away and these people are secure in themselves. However, everyone experiences

oday s hi-tec society, full of glicks and gigos, has really spoilt us. Our world is full of remote controls and everything is doable at the touch of a button. We don t even have to get up and make that telephone call. What little exercise we used to get has gone down the proverbial superhighway with the advent of the mobile phone, the internet and remote controls for virtually everything. But even with all these time saving gadgets we still don t seem to have time for ourselves. We ve forgotten how to relax, how to unwind and most importantly, a lot of us have forgotten how to get our bodies moving. We ve become less active and excuse ourselves for it by telling ourselves that, because of our hectic lifestyle, we simply don t have time to go to the gym. But you don t have to go to a gym or have gym equipment to keep yourself toned. And you don t have to have a whole lot of time. The effective method Most experts say that unless you exercise for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week you re not going to burn any calories. But isn t it better to exercise for even half that time than not at all? A fifteen minute workout every other day will work wonders for your metabolism, your energy levels and thus your overall well being. And it doesn t matter what that routine is. You can cycle, dance, run on the spot, jog or do anything that gets your blood pumping. The secret is to raise your metabolism so that the amount of calories you burn is greater than the amount you take in.
Here s how. The fifteen minute workout This routine can apply to any activity. It is a high intensity workout that raises your metabolism for much longer that any other routine that you might follow. Also because the pace is varied throughout the exercise you re not bored. Here s how it goes. 1. Stretch 2. Exercise at an easy pace for 2 minutes 3. Increase your pace for 2 minutes 4. Decrease your pace for 1 minute 5. Raise your pace for 5 minutes 6. Go at a slow pace for 1 minute 7. Raise it again for 2 minutes 8. And then slow down for 2 minutes 9. Stretch

or this article, we talked to people about what their concept of friendship is, and asked them to share stories about people, who they consider to be their friends. Some people will have different levels of friendship with other people, while others are more comfortable having a circle of friends that they can count on for support, instead of having one as a best friend. But for all of them, having a friend is a great thing, not only in times of need, but even moreso in times of great joy.
Priyanka, Freelance photographer What does friendship mean to you? Having someone you can divulge everything to and not be judged too harshly, I expect my friends to point out my weaknesses as well as my attributes. They ll be
honest without the intent of being cruel. I think a real friend is someone you can see everyday or not at all but the next time you meet nothing has changed, your relationship is just the same. Do you have a best friend? I have two. My boyfriend Karan. We ve been together about 8 years now. My best girl friend is Kate, We ve been friends since we were 11. What do you like about him/her most? Karan is smart and funny. He s amazing; we ve been together since we were 14 and 16, so we pretty much know everything about each other. He is the perfect male, charming, caring, intelligent. He s full of surprises so it s never been boring. I m a really lucky girl! Kate is my wild and crazy friend. She would say that about me, but she d be lying. We have fun every time we get together. We don t need anyone else, we create our own fun. We have gone through months without speaking for no apparent reason but if I give her a call or vice versa we feel like we ve been talking all along. We are kind of oblivious to our surroundings sometimes which I love. We share the same passion for animals, we both have five dogs each but she also has a cat which I think is pushing it. What don t you like about him/her? I hope they don t read this but I like them just as they are. We have our moments
but I wouldn t change them for anything.
Shereen, PR practitioner What does friendship mean to you? It means being able to meet someone and pour my heart out any time of the day and night. It also means being able to depend on the person who will support and assist you through thick and thin and is a lot of fun. Do you have a best friend? Yes, my husband is my best friend What do you like about him/her most? I can throw any crazy idea, expenditure and do anything at a whim and he just goes along with it just to make me happy and he make sure things are always OK with me. I also like his sense of humour, his ability

to make me laugh, his gorgeous eyes and his energy. What don t you like about him/her? Him being an over the top fitness freak. He has a great body so I am always jealous and keep wishing I could be just as disciplined as him.
Mohammad Gerami, Student What does friendship mean to you? Will ummm I think friendship to me has three levels friends, love friends, and best friend. With the friend you are enjoying your daily life for a certain amount of time. With a love friend you do everything as friend and also you get your needs that others cant deliver, then it might come another level for the lover friend to be a best friend. For best friend is the only person that you can talk about everything, everyone and anytime without any difficulties. I do have a friend in all these categories. What do you like the most about your friend? I don t know what I like the most but they have passed through a time to become close to me.

But AJ is, of course, a best friend to me as well. I like him because I can talk to him about anything, without any pretensions. I m just very comfortable around him and no matter what happens, I will love him. AJ: I have a best friend back in the Philippines, and he is like a brother to me. Catherine is also my best friend, and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. What don t you like about him/her? AJ: There are so many things that I like about her, but her being so understanding and patient are the things that we really drew me to her. Plus, we enjoy a lot of things in common, especially just being couch potatoes on weekends watching CSI and Smallville. Catherine: He is indescribable (smile). I like him for being who he is, and for being such a good person to me.
Dwayne, Leno and John, students We have each other as good friends. We like hanging out together, attending a sporting event, watching the movies, or just chilling out somewhere. We like each other because we know, no matter what
happens we will stick by each other. That to us is the meaning of friendship.
Ghiath, Banquet Supervisor What does friendship mean to you? The man without a friend is like a tree without its leaves. I have a best friend here in Dubai. What do you like about him? When he first came, and we were working together we had a little misunderstanding. But because we share a lot of things in common, example our passion for football, we started talking again and eventually we became good friends.

S AY NO
TO BULLYING
Bullying of any kind shouldn t be taken lightly. The problem is rampant in both schools and offices and the victim s life can be made miserable. Birjees Hussain examines the problem and the remedies.
1
B you ve ever been the victim of a bully in the school playground you ll understand the anguish involved. The torment is felt not just at the time of the bullying but afterwards too. In fact, the act of bullying is not only detrimental to a child s education but to his mental and physical well-being as well. One boy in America was so miserable he committed suicide; his mother found him hanging out of his bedroom window. It s alarming that incidences of this type are not uncommon among victims of bullying. But what exactly is bullying? The myths about bullying Let s begin by dispelling some universal myths. Firstly, everyone assumes and consoles victims by telling them that bullies have very low self-esteem. This is actually not true. In fact, it s quite the opposite. Most bullies have very high self-esteem which is perpetuated by their entourage. Very often there is one ringleader whose behaviour is reinforced by his (or her) followers who egg him on. Another myth is that boys are usually bullied by boys and girls by girls but boys have been known to bully girls and vice versa. Why does it go unchecked? It s a sad fact that bullying is a universal problem; it happens everywhere and in
58
March 2005
almost all schools. It also happens for no apparent reason. Usually an easy target is spotted and a move is made for the kill as it were. Bullying can be varied but most types begin on a verbal level and then over a prolonged period they escalate to the physical. The problem is that unless there are physical manifestations nobody thinks it s bullying. It can be based on someone s colour, size or religious beliefs. It can be based on everything or nothing. Ever heard the saying, sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me ? Well, as catchy as this phrase may be, the fact of the matter is that words such as smelly, fatty, skinny or loser do hurt and this form of verbal bullying is the most common in schools. The act usually happens when no one is looking and that is the primary reason it tends to go unchecked. Not just in schools But once we leave school we think that our days of being bulled are over. Unfortunately schools aren t the only places where bullying is rampant. If it doesn t happen at school it can happen at the office and this form of bullying can be just as destructive as the playground version. In one incident in the UK, a worker was so distraught about being harassed by his boss that on his way to work in the
mornings he would frequently pull his car up to the side of the road and throw up. Bullying at the office can take on a different façade from the school version and is usually based on a power struggle. It can be as overt as name calling or uttering profanities or as subtle as ignoring someone. Very often the victim may not even know he s being bullied. Some examples of this type of bullying include documents going missing, deliberately setting unattainable deadlines, withholding important information or making it impossible to complete crucial tasks. The bully is usually higher up on the corporate ladder or along it (such as a co-

worker). People who employ this tactic are usually on a power trip and their targets are usually those without the authority to retaliate or in whose nature confrontation is absent. They often won t strike immediately; they ll first test the water to gauge the reaction. These are the symptoms of bullying in the workplace but how do you know if your child is a victim? Do you know if your child is being bullied? Parents don t always know if their child is being bullied. But rest assured that if he is he ll usually exhibit some symptoms. The problem is that these can often be mistaken for other school-related problems and the skill is in spotting the right ones. Here are some questions to ask yourself or your child should you suspect he s having a problem. 1. Is your child unduly withdrawn? And is it sudden? 2. Does your child come home with unexplained cuts or bruises? 3. Does he always feel unwell on weekday mornings but feel fine at the weekends? 4. Is he suddenly doing badly at school? Why? Is he playing truant? Is he often found wandering about in shopping malls when he should be at school? Is he avoiding school? Now that you know, what do you do about it? There is a remedy Schools in the Far East actually receive bad press if it becomes known that bullying has gone unchecked. The downside of negative PR, however, is more negative PR. One principle of a school in Malaysia took his life because of the bad publicity his school was receiving as a result of bullying. In Japan a peer mediation programme to focus on the victims has been set up
whereby pupils who were once bullied themselves handle conflicts between children even where the children are usually friends. For instance they ll even step in when friends have a falling out. Children, parents and teachers also undertake an awareness programme. After all, in order to be able to solve a problem you must first be aware of it and understand it. In America, a national school s programme has been set up in which every student is required to participate. It was set up by America s television psychiatrist, Dr Phil McGraw. As part of his programme each student signs a contract with their school supporting this programme and agreeing not to be a bully or to tolerate it. So if they see someone being cornered they are required to either intervene, if it s safe to do so, or to report it to the school authorities. The premise is that if a bully is singled out then he or she will change their behaviour.
At the office But how do you change the unacceptable behaviour of a colleague or boss? The best action is no action. In other words, do not react because that s what the bully thrives on. Stick to the three rules: 1. Ignore the bully 2. Keep smiling. 3. Maintain your politeness at all times. We re on to you And finally, those who are inclined to this nasty pastime, regardless of their age, should remember that bullying no longer goes unnoticed or unchecked. With all the publicity that bullying is now receiving you should remember that everyone, parents, children and teachers alike, are now being schooled in not only recognising it but in dealing with it too. Let me give all students an example. A camera in a classroom of a Japanese school caught a young boy being beaten about the head with a chair by several of his classmates. And the ordeal went on for several minutes. Every child involved in that heinous business was apprehended. Bullying has no place in a school or an office.

HIBISCUS
ROSA
-SINENSIS
By Bruce Pederson, General Manager Dubai Garden Centre
M
alvaceae is a large family of plants, covering about 85 genera and 1500 separate species. The genus Hibiscus (one of the 85) covers over 300 separate species. The name Hibiscus is derived from the Greek for the Mallow plant (a member of the Malvaceae family) and the species name rosa-sinensis is Latin for Rose of China, although the exact origins of the plant are unknown. Hibiscus is a cosmopolitan plant, and its true origins are unclear, plants are found through China, the Middle East, Southern Europe, South-East Asia, Mauritius and the Caribbean. Early explorers and traders carried, moved and traded these plants. Since the plant cross- breeds quite easily, the original ancestry of the plant was lost. Hibiscus plants range from annuals to soft-wooded shrubs and small trees. The common garden varieties that are found across the Gulf are cultivars of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. These plants are propagated from cuttings, as seed does not produce a plant that is the same as the parent plant. Height and Growth Habit In the UAE Hibiscus is grown as a medium to large garden shrubs. Small, flowering potted plants are also available from Holland, and are used for colourful table decorations. If the garden plants reach between 1.5 and 3 metres in height, they can be used as low screening, hedge, container, and specimen plants. Hibiscuses normally have an upright, bushy growth habit. However older plants (or those that have been neglected) tend to have numerous spindly and weak shoots with a sprawling habit and rundown appearance. Flowers and Leaves Flowers and particularly flower buds are typically whorled or twisted in a clockwise
62
March 2005
direction. The leaves and branches of the plant are also whorled and spiral up the central stem from the base of the plant. Each flower consists of 5 petals which radiate from the base of the ovary. The pistil, sigma and anthers of the flowers are very prominent and are an easy way to identify the plant. Individual flowers measure anything from 5 cm to 20 cm in diameter. Double flowering varieties of Hibiscus are also available. Flower colours range from white through yellow, orange, pinks, red to deep maroon as well as numerous variations of these colours. Pollination of the flowers occurs mainly through insects.
Healthy leaves are dark green in colour. There are however a number of cultivars that have bronze or variegated foliage. The leaf varies in size from 5cm to 15cm depending on the variety and location
within the garden. Leaves have indented serrations along the margin. Planting Plants should be planted in a hole at least double the diameter of the container it is supplied in, larger if possible. A mixture of 50% sweet soil and 50% compost should be used to back fill the hole. Care should be taken when removing the plant from the supplier s container so the root system of the plant is not damaged. If roots are growing out of the bottom of the container, cut the container away from the plant, don t cut the roots off. The plant should not under any circumstances be planted deeper than the original soil level as supplied. Dampening or wetting the soil up against the stem will result in stem rot and the death of the plant! Tall plants should be staked until they are able to stand on their own. Cutting and Pruning Plants should be thinned out from time to time to remove old, weak growth and improve air circulation through the plant. This reduces the likelihood of insect pests
Hibiscus.qxd
17/03/05

Page 63
and fungal infections. Up to one third of the foliage can be removed without causing too much stress to the plant. Avoid pruning, cutting or hedging during summer as this exposes the tender internal foliage to strong sunlight which will result in the plant burning. Formative pruning can be done in early winter (from late September) onwards. As the plant will normally produce flowers throughout the year it is pointless to wait until it is finished flowering to prune. Cuts along the stem should be made with clean secateurs and be about 0.5 cm to 1 cm above the node or bud. Do not water over the foliage of the plant directly after cutting, this can result in the infection of the cut and die back along the stem. Nutrient Deficiencies
Hibiscuses are notorious for developing yellow leaves, and show signs of nutrient deficiencies very quickly. The more common deficiency is Iron, although in the UAE and Gulf areas other nutrient deficiencies show up very quickly as well. Feed the plants with a combination of a granular fertiliser, applied to the roots such as 12:4:24 TE for established plants or 12:24:12 TE when planting. Alternate this with a foliar feed, that is a water soluble fertiliser (such as Phostrogen or BioGreen) that can be sprayed over the plant. This is absorbed through the pores and foliage of the plant. Foliar applications are more effective short-term measures as the fertiliser is not subject to adverse pH and saline soil conditions. Over watering or waterlogged soil also results in the yellowing of the leaves, the leaves closest to the base of the plant are affected first. They turn yellow-cream in colour and then fall off. If this happens reduce the amount of water the plant is receiving and check the drainage of the pot; if the plant is pot-bound re-pot it into a larger container. Do not confuse normal leaf drop with over-watering or nutrient deficiencies. Older leaves of the plant will turn bright yellow before dropping. This occurs on an ongoing basis and affects the entire plant. Yellowing of a large number of leaves or the entire plant is cause for concern. Insect Pests Insect pests that are most likely to
attack Hibiscus are: Aphids, Mealy Bug, Thrips, Red Spider Mite and various beetles. Plants that are over-fertilised or plants in areas that receive poor ventilation are most likely to experience problems from insect pests. Mealy Bugs pose the biggest problem for Hibiscus in the UAE. These are small white insects that resemble small pieces of cotton-wool. Fungal Pests Phytophthora (root rot), this is normally caused through over-watering or poor drainage. The plant will quickly deteriorate. As the root system is damaged the leaves will yellow and the plant will exhibit signs of wilt. Stem rot can also occur if the collar or stem of the plant is kept constantly wet – through irrigation. Other famous Hibiscus and relatives The vegetable Okra, which is widely grown in Africa and India is also a species of Hibiscus (H. esculentus), where the fruit (pod) is cooked. The cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum) from which cotton fibre is derived is also a member of the Hibiscus (Malvaceae) family. The more commonly occurring Hibiscus found in the UAE is found in medium to tall growing evergreen shrubs, although larger specimens could be considered small trees. Other commonly found species of Hibiscus in the UAE include Hibiscus syriacus (originally from Syria) and Hibiscus tiliaceus (Cotton Wood Tree) a small evergreen tree with yellow flowers.

A Stroke of Luck in Dublin
There s only one place that can conjure up the mystic feel of bagpipes, fables, and fairy tales. This month ESPRIT travels to the misty shores of Ireland for the St. Patrick s Day celebrations and brings back a little luck-of-the-Irish of its own. by Amina Abdel-Halim
.
rom March 16th to the 20th Dublin hosts the biggest St Patrick s Day celebration in Ireland. Visitors seeking to celebrate Ireland s National Holiday can look forward to music, fireworks, street theatre and dance. There s a treasure hunt, visual art exhibitions, family fun, and an eagerly anticipated St. Patrick s Day Parade. St. Patrick s Day is celebrated on March 17, the religious feast day of St. Patrick and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for thousands of years. On St. Patrick s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink, and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage. Ireland s capital city is packed with culture and tradition so come prepared to experience more than just the Festival. The city is both young and trendy, and historical and ancient. Shops generally open from 09.00 18.00, Monday Saturday with late opening on Thursday until 20.00. In the city center many shops open on Sundays from 12.00 until 18.00 and some of the larger Shopping Centers open late during the week. English is the spoken language in Ireland. Irish, or Gaelic (Gaelige), the ancient Celtic language of the country is also spoken by about 5% of the population. Many famous artists sprang from the rich musical tradition prevalent in

Ireland. And the city still revels in its musical heritage. Walk past any local pub to get an earful of both traditional tunes and live popular music. The lure of Dublin is so magical and the attractions endless that you are sure to find yourself planning a return trip before the end of your stay For a great taste of Irish culture, step into any one of Dublin s many museums, galleries or historic buildings. The city also contains many outstanding parks and gardens. Getting around the Dublin region can easily be done using the bus, DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport), hired car, or taxi. The city is also equipped to handle bicycle riders if you wish to tour in two-wheels. For extra taste, Dublin is a haven for those who enjoy eating out. Fine dining, oldfashioned fish and chips, sushi bars, and Victorian tea-shops, you ll find it all. The city exists as a wonderful blend of old and new. Whatever mood you re in, Dublin will have you coming back for more celebrations, fun, and reverie. And if you ve got the luck-of-the-Irish, you ll be coming back for more. ace car drivers know this lesson well. As does the nissan Z design team. While other carmakers try to better their past, to see what they can improve upon, the nissan design team focused only on the future. And the result? An engine filled with racing technology. A drive shaft made with carbon-fiber composite. Aluminum suspension design that does the amazing. Drag coefficients so low, the aerodynamics were calibrated in a state-of-the-art wind tunnel. The Nissan Z. The Start Climb into your new nissan Z, and you ll climb into a driver s seat tailored for performance. Behind you, a seatback sculpted with large wings, helping to assure a secure driving position during quick lateral acceleration. Wings that taper below the shoulders to avoid any interference during cornering or aggressive gear changing. While

around you, there s a selfish layout of instruments. Every dial, every button, every bit of important information is pointed directly at you, for instant comprehension. And if you are the passenger? While your seat may not be quite as radical, consider yourself lucky, and hold on tight. Steering wheel grip. Forget 10 o clock and 2 o clock . Put your hands where they need to be, at 9 o clock and 3 o clock, and keep them there with your palms applying Just slight pressure to stabilize your arm movements. When cornering, lead into the turn by pushing the wheel with the hand opposite the turn. The rationale is simple. Smooth arcs. Whatever the wheel does, is what the car does, and when you push (rather than pulling with the inside hand) you create smooth, consistent arcs. Clutch: When you stick an engine that pumps
out 363nm of torque as the Z, you d better make sure the clutch can handle it. Which is why the clutch pedal in the Z not only looks good, but is connected to a dual-mass flywheel for precise, positive engagement and minimal vibration as you throttle up the closeratio six-speed. Brake: Between your foot on the shiny and sexy brake pedal of the Z, there is a brake assist system that adds, when necessary, extra braking force into the equation. Oil pressure: On the dash, three gauges tell you almost everything you need to know, including a trip computer that displays the following: a speed indicator, outside air temperature, distance to empty, average fuel consumption and speed, elapsed time and trip odometer, and a stopwatch.
Car.qxd

Page 67
Transmission: This is never easy, the manual or automatic decision. Thankfully, in the new Z, either choice is a good one. A sixspeed means a one-of-a-kind shift lever (padded on the front and back, for a more intuitive throw) with an incredibly short and quick throw between well-defined gates.
Engine: 294hp. 37.9 kg-m of torque. The engine is a destination in itself, a testament to what can happen when you couple revolutionary materials with microscopic attention to detail. Acceleration begins with calculated gulps of air. Off the line, a massive highflow manifold and a highly intelligent ecu that continuously varies the valve timing provide optimum consumption throughout the rpm range. Attention to micro scopic details: Microfinishing. It s one of many nissan obsessive-compulsive behaviors that make the engine in the new Z a power plant of epic proportions. Less friction means engine components spin up to speed faster. Which is why the crankshaft, the camshafts, every surface that counts has been microscopically finished and finely polished. Then, we polish our trophies. A unique multi-link: Suspension, for not-so-unique multipotholed corners.
Three links up front. Four links in the rear. Separate placement of the rear springs and shocks. Ripple-control shock absorbers. All these innovations add up to one thing. Confidence. Whether cornering, braking, or battling a stretch of abused asphalt, the multilink design promotes camber change, allowing the wheels of the Z to remain flat on the pavement, while the lightweight suspension allows for quicker reactions. Brembo®: The ultimate grabbers. Large diameter rotors coupled with four-piston calipers, all cooled by a unique Brembo® air management system, they are the same type racecar drivers count on lap after lap, corner after corner, checkered flag after checkered flag. Safety: Many of the safety features built into the nissan Z are inspired by the safety features built into racecars. Zone body a high-intensity cabin structure built with crossmembers and reinforcements surrounds you, while on the sides of the Z are energy-absorbing side structures. Front and rear crumple Zones, front dual airbags, side impact airbags, and side air curtains are also there to help, if necessary. Storage: From compartments and seat pockets that hold cell phones and CDs, to the lockable luggage floor box and rear parcel box, attention to detail throughout lets you focus on what s most important about the 350Z driving it.

You don t have to understand physics to create a good snap! True or false? By Ibrahim Assi
*
ut understanding the practical principals behind photography gives you a broader, more flexible approach to good work. Let s start with the most important and the very foundation stone of photography: The light, the basic features and how to illuminate a subject Or how to control the light it self. Visible light is a stream of energy radiating from a different sources: Sun, fire, bulb etc ., is always keeps the same characteristics: Light behaves as waves; different wavelengths give the eyes different colors. We don t see colors, our eyes receives different waves. Light travel in straight line. Bouncing in many directions after hitting a surface. Light is very fast, has a great speed: 300 000 km/hr. is going slower in the air, water and glass. Consists of energy particles or photons. Every camera has an important device: Light meter: witch is consisting to measure the amount of light penetrating the lens To form the final results. Extra light gives you a bleached photo; less light makes your photo darker. As is radiating from energy sources, the light is varying in colors or temperatures: you can notice the variation in colors during the day by watching the sun :from early morning to sun set , here me can catch the normal wave by eye or lens to be transformed into colors as a final vision. The human eye it contains three light receptors, responding to: Blue, Green and red. When all receptors are simulated equally by what you see, you tend to see it as WHITE. Eye can see colors ranging from 400nm to 700 nm (nm= Nanometers) Light as an electromagnetic radiations contain a lots of invisible rays:
68
March 2005
Radio, radar, infrared, X ray etc and as long as our eye receptors can simulate only with rays between 400nm and 700 nm. So we can not see thus invisible rays. Direct light is forming a shadow after hit-
ting an obstacle , using bounced or undirected light can soften the shadows especially if you can use any type of reflectors to bounce again the incident rays witch can illuminate the back side

MASK
We all remember the first Mask, a Jim Carrey vehicle that let us all see just how funny he could be in a physical comedy. Well, this time the dog finds the Mask of Loki, which his owner Tim Avery an aspiring cartoonist ends up wearing to a costume party for the animation company he works for. He makes a great impression on the boss, promotion, can t find the mask for more inspiration, etc. etc. etc. Meanwhile, Loki (Alan Cumming) is in the process of hunting the mask down to return to his father in order to avoid banishment. So Tim and Loki are both looking for the mask, which (and I m not spoiling anything here) is in the dogs possession. The Mask of Loki, for those who didn t see the Mask, is a mythological object that transforms its user into a manic shapeshifter alter-ego. As bad as a baby with super powers might seem, the really bad news is that Loki wants his mask back... Cast: Lance Khazei, Rob McKittrick, Jamie Kennedy, bob Hoskins Director: Larry Guterman

BIG ON BOOKS The Glass Castle : A Memoir by Jeannette Walls
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn t stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an excitement addict. Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever. Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town and the family Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home. What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms. For two decades, Jeannette Walls hid her roots. Now she tells her own story. A regular contributor to MSNBC.com, she lives in New York and Long Island and is married to the writer John Taylor.

The One Thing You Need to Know : ... About Great Managing, Great Leading, and Sustained Individual Success by Marcus Buckingham Great managing, leading, and career success Buckingham draws on a wealth of applicable examples to reveal that a controlling insight lies at the heart of the three. Lose sight of this one thing and even the best efforts will be diminished or compromised. Readers will be eager to discover the surprisingly different answers to each of these rich and complex subjects. Each could be explained endlessly to detail their many facets, but Buckingham s great gift is his ability to cut through the mass of often-conflicting agendas and zero in on what matters most, without ever oversimplifying. As he observes, success comes to those who remain mindful of the core insight, understand all of its ramifications, and orient their decisions around it. Buckingham backs his arguments with authoritative research from a wide variety of sources, including his own research data and in-depth interviews with individuals at every level of an organization, from CEO s to hotel maids and stockboys. In every way a groundbreaking book, The One Thing You Need to Know offers crucial performance and career lessons for business people at all career stages. The John Deere Way : Performance that Endures by David Magee As many former giants of the American industrial heartland fall prey to lowcost foreign competition and high domestic manufacturing costs, one U.S. company stands out as a shining example of growth, brand recognition, and phenomenal success in a globalized world. John Deere has done more than prevail in its primary market: With $19.9 billion in annual sales and 46,000 employees, this global powerhouse has expanded its highly respected brand name beyond agricultural equipment to become the world leader in forestry harvesting equipment and a major supplier of equipment for construction, lawn and turf care, and golf course maintenance, as well as financial services and managed health care. How can a company founded in the early nineteenth century maintain such a high level of vitality in the constantly changing business climate of the twenty-first century? Can other organizations crack the secrets of this enduring firm s success and use them to enhance their own growth and profitability? In The John Deere Way, celebrated business author David Magee takes you behind the scenes to discover the timeless underlying principles and innovative practices that have enabled John Deere to continue to leap ahead of the competition for nearly 170 years. Given unfettered access to the company, its archives, and its CEO Robert Lane, Magee soon discovered that the driving force behind this dynamic organization is a set of values and principles instilled at its inception by John Deere himself. From the day Deere developed the world s first commercially successful selfscouring steel plow in 1837 through to a remarkable series of innovations spearheaded by Robert Lane today, these principles have guided the company through good times and bad, helping it survive depressions and wars while making the most of prosperous times.

THE PALM
The Eight wonder of the world.. Why is it called the Eighth Wonder of the World? The Palm is a unique project in many ways. Upon completion, the project will have created the world s largest two man-made islands, which are expected to be visible from the moon and are already visible from outer space. The overall design and look of the islands is expected to be an overwhelming visual experience. The islands will offer an incredibly wide range of services and opportunities such as residence, shopping, dining, hotels, theme parks and marine sports. The most advanced construction and engineering techniques will be utilised in the construction of the islands. The Palm involves the creation of the world s three largest man-made islands known as The Palm Jumeirah, The Palm Jebel Ali and The Palm Deira. Located just off the coast of the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the three palm tree shaped islands are expected to contribute to the city s position as a premier global tourist destination. The project will increase Dubai s shoreline by a total of 520 kms and create a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment opportunities, all within a unique and

Aries
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and is ruled by the Mars. This represents offensive power and begins at the spring equinox. In Aries we move from the potential to the actual; from dormant to active participation. Desire, initiative, courage and action are words which best describe Aries.
Peersonal traits
Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 Ruling Planet Mars Nature Positive
Arians have a strong self image, the ability to think fast and size up most situations in an instant. Arians calculate risks with lightning speed and make decisions accordingly. An adage that fits the Arian well is A straight line is the shortest distance between two points . Arians don t waste time and energy beating around the bush, they come straight to the point, and leave the bodies where they fall. Positive Traits Arians are known to be generous people. They give of their time, effort, money and sympathies. They have both moral and physical courage and will give support to anyone they believe is being treated unfairly, or to any cause they deem worthy. They are creative, open hearted, and high spirited Main positive traits: Initiating, pioneering, eager, courageous, independent, dynamic.

Negative Traits
A high energy output is cause for great anxiety in some Arians. Sometimes, this anxiety is so intense and unmanageable that it becomes a cause to abandon a venture out of fear of failure. They then redirect their energy into something new. Another flaw in the Arian makeup is a fear of rejection. Rejection is near the top of their list of fears. If the Arian is not certain of acceptance, to avoid rejection, they do the rejecting first. The best defense is a good offense. Main negative traits: Quick-tempered, violent, impatient, egotistical and intolerant.
Profession
In their professions, Arians need to take charge. The routine or monotonous was not meant for them. Their originality, imagination and great mental and physical energy require work where their can utilize all of these traits. They prefer to work on their own or direct others. They can communicate and form public opinion. Journalism, publicity, advertising, publishing, radio and TV are natural professions for them to prevail in.

Openness, enthusiasm and individualism are the main traits of the Arians. They are outspoken, alert, quick to act and speak. They prefer to speak than to listen. Arians are ambitious, with lots of drive and a strong will to lead. They are poor followers. Fiercely independent, they usually take the side of the underdog in any controversy. They are champions of lost causes and losing battles. This trait is due to a strong belief in their own abilities to turn any situation around. Arian values are more intellectual than spiritual. Primarily people of action, they demonstrate little subtlety or cunningness. Frank and amiable, they make quick decisions, and grasp ideas very quickly. They are also quick to anger, Arians are known for their impatience, and are prone to be arrogant.

The military is another field that is ripe for Arians with its many leadership possibilities. Law enforcement is another commanding vocation that is attractive to Arians. In a similar capacity Aries make excellent surgeons and surgical nurses. In the arts and entertainment field, Arians also do very well. They are endowed with so many valuable assets; a keen intellect, initiative, intuition, inventiveness, energy, leadership qualities and enthusiasm that they ll shine in any profession that they set their sights on.
Advice for the Arians
Arians have to watch their impatience,, lack of thrift, and a domineering attitude. Their ego also requires more than a fair share of continual approval and acclaim. Arians thrive on challenge, and they truly believe they can do anything - so they have a tendency to bite off more than they can chew. Acquiring patience, persistence and perseverance will go a long way in helping them to make the most advantage of their great gifts.
Origins in Mythology
Throughout the ancient Mediterranean region, the Ram figure was associated with the constellation Aries or Arietis. Ares was the Greek god of war and pestilence. He was the son of Zeus and Hera, consort of Aphrodite. The Romans associated Ares with Mars, the enemy of the tyrants and defender of the just. Originally an agricultural god associated with the affairs of spring, Mars assimilated many of the characteristics of Ares since battles were often coordinated at this same time of year. The son of Nepele, Phrixus, was falsely accused of ravishing Biadice. For this, he was condemned to death, but was rescued by a golden ram, sent by the god Mercury. Phrixus escaped safely, and at the ram s request, sacrificed the animal to the god Zeus to honor the initial offering. For his courage, the ram s likeness was set into the heavens.
