Gems
All that sparkles is stone
We ve talked about the beauty and elegance of pearls and the stunning brilliance of the hardest substance known to man the diamond. This month Birjees Hussain look at the family to which they belong Gems.
/
ems are precious stones that are sufficiently beautiful and hardwearing. The word Gem , which is also frequently referred to as a jewel , comes from the Latin Gemma which means a bud . The earliest record of gems goes back to the time of King Solomon, and the earliest engravings on gems go back to the 4th Millennium BC. Mining Like diamonds and pearls all precious stones are found naturally occurring. Like diamonds, other gems are also found in various types of deposits in the earth, some deposits being deeper than others. Although there are many types of gems they re found in similar geographical regions. Some of the more important locations are Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, India, the US, the former Soviet Union and Australia. The final cut All gems are found in their raw state and thus have to be cut and polished to optimise their beauty and hence value. Although diamonds also belong to this family the way they are handled and fashioned can differ from the way other gems are. For example, gems are cut and
polished by lapidaries. Unlike diamonds, gems are ground into shape with an abrasive after being sawed roughly into shape, the latter generally depending upon its original form. The cut that is most popular for gems is the cabochon which is smooth and round, a shape that is most conducive to the appearance of a cat s eye or star within the stone. Other cuts are the famous brilliant, which is prevalent in diamonds, the triangular, square, trapezoidal and diamond. Unlike diamonds, elaborate designs are often engraved into the surface of gems. The earliest records of such engravings go back to the 4 th Millennium BC in
Mesopotamia. Other recordings include Greece, Rome and Ancient Egypt when local events were pictorially depicted in stone. Sometimes the designs are raised onto the surface, as in cameos, and sometimes they are incised into the surface. But it s not these engravings that render the gems their value; it s the properties that are naturally exhibited by the stones after they ve been cut and polished.

A symphony of light and colour All precious stones exhibit lustre, brilliance, fire and various colours when polished properly. One stone actually exhibits a six sided star when illuminated. This is known as asterism and is caused by needle-like extensions of other minerals within the stone. Moreover, the range of colours that gems occur in is spectacular. Not surprisingly, in the old days, many gems were named merely after their natural shade. For example, all red stone were called rubies even though they might not have been, but as more stones were discovered over the years a branch of science was introduced called gemmology and gemmologist gave each stone its unique name. The power of gems All sorts of supernatural qualities have been attributed to gems, whether they re true or not. In the days of Ancient Egypt people thought that gems had special powers. Among the many misconceptions, people thought that they brought on premonitions to the wearer, brought good luck, warded off evil spirits and could distinguish between good and bad. They were even used to solve crimes; if

The latter is not often thought of as a gem but it does indeed fall into this category. Sapphire, topaz and the ruby, however, are some of the less frequently purchased stones but valuable nevertheless. Sapphire comes from the Greek word lapis lazuli. It s a blue gemstone belonging to the group corundum. It tends to occur in shades of blue the most prized of which is the invited to a dinner banquet left empty handed; each was presented with a lucky ring to take away with them. The Ancient Romans learned the art of jewellery making from their Egyptian counterparts. Senators of the day wore six rings on each finger and even had a set for each season. Clear stones are the most highly prized as are those that exhibit a six sided star within them when illuminated. The finest rubies are found in Mogok, Thailand. Topaz occurs in a variety of shades from completely lacking in colour to yellow, blue, green and red but the most popular colour is orange-yellow. The most prized stones come from India, Sri Lanka and parts of the old Soviet Union. Gemstones have their own unique charm that is quite distinct from that of the traditional diamond. Whereas diamonds are a symbol of grandeur and wealth, other gemstones are renowned for their special powers the most popular one of which is their connection to the month in which one was born. For example, topaz is the birthstone for November and should only be worn by those born in this month to gain the optimum benefit. Now, which is your birthstone?

Desire Of Fashion History (1854 – 2005)
By Emad Mohsen
Louis Vuitton: Trunk-maker in Paris One hundred and fifty years ago, Louis Vuitton, a virtuoso trunk-maker, founded his own business. Foreseeing the importance of travel in the modern world, he designed and produced the luggage and accessories that were best suited to this new trend. His descendants, who inherited his know-how, have shown the same ingenuity in building an empire that has evolved constantly from the mid-nineteenth century and into the third millennium. Meanwhile, Louis Vuitton has won itself a prestigious clientele. Today, the adventure has taken on an international scope, and the company is exploring new horizons, notably in fashion. Its growing public is turning the irresistible rise of Louis Vuitton into a genuine social phenomenon.

Birth of a House Life has always been a journey, and never more so than in this modern age where traveling is second nature. Mobility, curiosity, ubiquity and speed are now the four cardinal points for men and women in a hurry to savor the delights of life. Perception begins when sensations change: hence the necessity of travel. And there are no travelers without baggage, even if it is only intellectual. Sometimes, the simple sight of a suitcase can set the mind racing. For imagination is the essence of any migration. In 150 years of activity, the House of Louis Vuitton has spurred the imagination by the simple evocativeness of its designs that break-not the sound barrier, but better-the barriers of dream. There are two simple reasons behind this magic: a level of quality based on traditional know-how and a capacity to evolve inresponse to changing circumstances.

Vuitton and Architecture Louis Vuitton has never separated contents and container and has always taken the greatest care over the interior design of its stores. With the introduction of Vuitton fashion , the Interiors have been transformed to set off new product lines and respond to the more modern tastes of an increasingly youthful clientele. Many of the sales outlets around the world have needed more than a change. Which is why the house decided to set up its own architectural unit. Drawing on specialist talents in each country. It has developed a strong signature style for the network of Vuitton stores that also allows each shop to preserve its own Specificity and originality. In 51 Countries Architecture has been important to Vuitton ever since the firm s creation in 1854. In the past its role was essentially to lay out stores, however today its task is often to build them, or even to design new production facilities. It has become central to Vuitton s activities. In 1912, Georges Vuitton opened the 500square-meter building he had put up at number 70 on the Avenue des ChampsElysees. At the time, this seven-floor Art Nouveau structure represented the architectural avant-garde. Today, it looks across the prestigious avenue to a round Art Deco building which, at the end of 2004, will be home to Vuitton s flagship store. Visual Identity The interior architecture of Vuitton stores is designed to serve the same visual logic. The emphasis here is on the House s signature products. All the furnishings-furniture, counters, presentation racks, display cases were designed by architect Peter Marino. In 1998, the Champs-Elysees store was the first to be fitted out with the new furnishings. Marino s concept, the brand s genetic code, must take into account the creative development of the different product lines. The concept is

constantly evolving and the flexible internal structures must adapt to constraints that change every six months. Young customers, eager for novelty, particularly like the element of surprise. Its popularity is epitomized by the customer traffic at the flagship Champs-Elysees store, which receives three to five thousand visitors a day. 150 Years Of Know-How For great-grandfather Georges Vuitton, the important thing was to ensure a customer s personal effects traveled in the utmost comfort Patrick-Louis Vuitton When Louis Vuitton opened his shop in 1854, he set great store by the high quality of his luggage. Business prospered, and six years later he set up his first workshop in asnieres. This workshop, still in operation, became the cradle of a tradition that carries on unchanged today. It is here that craftsmen design prototypes and produces the company's hard luggage and prestigious special orders. a training center and a museum are the other core activities at this historic site. Asnieres is the starting point for the fifteen production workshops-located mainly in France -where the know-how acquired over 150 years goes into manufacturing the different product lines developed in recent decades by a company that still succeeds in striking a balance between new technologies and timeless tradition. Invitation To Travel While Patrick-Louis Vuitton keeps an eye on every activity and has known all the staff for years, his main role is running the special orders department. Not only is all the hard luggage made in the Asnieres workshops, each piece the result of thousands of small hammer blows, this is also where the most unusual requests-ranging from a travel safe or a portable library to a case for a guitar, a violin, or even a baby s feeding-bottle are made reality. Each year some two hundred curiosities leave this high-precision laboratory where time seems to stand still. The Workshops For Louis Vuitton, close partnership between its work shops and its network of stores has always Been the obvious approach. By 1977, the Asnieres workshop could no longer cope with burgeoning demand in Asia-especially Japan and new production sites were sought. Workshops were set up in Saint-Donat and Sarras in the Rhone

valley, a region with a long tradition of tanning and leatherwork. A dozen other new workshops have been opened since then. All are on a distinctly human scale none has more than 250 employees-and all have their own existence and identity. 1998: Moving into Fashion New designs for a new millennium A successful partnership For Louis Vuitton, 1998 was a vintage year, the year the brand decided to branch out into fashion, setting up a department for ready-to-wear, shoes, accessories and jewelry and choosing Marc Jacobs, a young designer who had already made a name for himself in Manhattan, as its artistic director. This was quite a risk. A high-end luxury product is, by definition, timeless: made to last, it is indifferent to fluctuations of taste. It ages well, grows in beauty with time just witness everything made by Louis Vuitton over the last 150 years. How could the idea of longevity be reconciled with the effervescence and perpetual renewal that is fashion, where every new season decrees a change in feminine allure? Though seen by some as an enfant terrible of the New York fashion world. Marc Jacobs is Fascinated by the history and culture of fashion, by its basics and classics in a word, by all the ingredients of what we call style He doesn t create un-wearable fashions, but rather a style based on observation of everyday realities and rendered unique by his eye for detail and quality. A style that can meet the needs of the most sophisticated women. Thus, a fruitful, unforced dialogue developed between the trunk-maker, who by essence must be pragmatic and precise, and this modern young man who sees himself less as an artist than as the designer of a certain art of living. With Jacobs, the venerable House has been able to maintain the subtle balance between its 150 years of tradition and the desire for novelty, vivacity and beauty. And to do so with determination, but without haste.

Greet the New Year with a New Make Over
.
With the New Year and a new road stretching before us we thought it would be nice to travel that road with a new look? Birjees Hussain shows you how to make the most of your face and get out of that makeup rut.
or many people a new beginning can mean the beginning of a new state of mind or a new look, whether it s a new outfit, new hairdo or new makeup. Makeup styles have evolved so much over the years that it s difficult to keep track of what s in and what s not. Is the lip liner in or out? Should we wear eyeliner on the lower lid as well as the upper, etc. But despite what makeup artists say it s important to wear what s right for you and what makes you comfortable. Like fashion, makeup styles change from one decade to the next. The look that was popular in the 50s or 60s may not be fashionable now. Or is it? Which one are you? That depends on the look you re after. But often some people stay with the same look for years because that s what they re comfortable with or because they re afraid to experiment with anything that s unusual to them. and other high-end brands in fashion are what this look is all about coupled with subtlety in make up. Tinted moisturisers, and subtle lip and eye colour complete the look. Bohemian Rhapsody The 60s look inspired the bohemian style, sporting ethnic jewellery, baggy tops and long flared skirts. It became especially popular in the early 80s. Although this particular style does tend towards the natural look, pastel eye shadows, plum cheeks and lips make up the face. The gothic look This was inspired by Cleopatra and her famous thick, black kohl lined eyes. However, to maximise the effect, lips need to be played down with neutral lipsticks otherwise you ll end up with a punk rock look. The eyes have it Eye makeup has changed dramatically over the years; from the timeless classic to the false eyelashes of the 70s to the hot smoky look that is so popular today. Trends go in and out of fashion, and new

looks are always coming, but one thing is for sure. Eyeliner, although very 50s and 60s, is here to stay and the name of the game is the art of applying it correctly. Most people go for the Cleopatra look which has evolved into the sultry smoky look. Do you tend towards just mascara, which is the safest eye makeup, with the merest hint of lipstick or gloss? After all you can t really go wrong with that. But the name of the game here is to think outside the cosmetic box. Wearing makeup should be exciting and enjoyable but, like a lot of things we do in life, our makeup routine can get into just that, a routine. So, rather than sticking to a particular look have you thought about mixing and matching; maybe stealing the eyes from one look and the lips from another? We ve got the look? This month we re going for a look where the eyes are the focal point.
Remember
Foundation is so important and should not look like a mask which it will if you don t blend properly. Make sure that it covers your neck and shoulders as well as your face. For blemishes apply concealer after you ve applied the foundation and only on the blemish. Eyes those who don t know how to apply eye makeup tend either to make a mess of it or keep it simple with just eyeliner after Cleopatra. Few know how to apply eye shadow and the difficulty comes in when more than one shade is used. The secret is to blend and no where is this more true than in the smoky look. But why not put the two together? You need a base, a highlighter and a very deep brown. Apply the base on the upper lid and the highlighter under your brows to accentuate them. Sweep the deep brown over the base blending into the crease and the outer corners. Apply the same shade to the bottom eyelid too but as
Fashion myths 1. Black and brown can be worn together as long as it doesn t look like an accident. The key is to ensure that the tonal difference is wide enough to look deliberate. The same goes for black and grey. 2. Your bag and shoes don t need to match exactly. Look at your bag and find the colour that s most prominent and try and match it to that. 3. If you re a plus size, you can wear prints but the key is in the size of the prints. The bigger the print the more your size will be accentuated. Remember, though, that black and white are most slimming. 4.Most people shy away from white, especially when they don t know when to wear it. The key is in the fabric. Wear light fabric in the summer and a heavier one during the winter. 5. Your clothes should fit. Tight clothes will make you look bulgy and baggy ones will look like your wearing somebody else s.
close to the lashes as possible. Apply a soft kohl pencil to the upper eyelids and the inside and outside of the lower. Finish off with mascara. Lips When making up your face it s important never to let your lips and eyes compete with each other for attention. When one is strong, the other should be played down. So with such dramatic smokypatra eyes stick to pastel or neutral lip colours. If you have thin lips try applying a light gloss with your fingertips to just the centre of your lips. The light that s then reflected gives the illusion of fuller lips. Lip liner is optional unless the lips are the focal point. Cheeks Instead of a powder rouge, why not use your lipstick? Smudge the colour onto the apples of your cheeks with your fingertips and finish off with a translucent face powder. That completes your look.
Makeup myths 1. Redheads can wear red lipstick. There are so many shades of reds and the key is to choose the right one for your skin tone. 2. Blue eye shadow isn t outdated provided that the lid is lined with a base and the blue is layered and blended with a darker shade of blue. 3. Eyeliner can be worn on both the upper and lower eyelids. Makeup dos and don ts 1. Don t wear too much makeup, especially the blusher unless you want to look like a clown. And remember lighter during the day. 2. Don t wear lip liner without lipstick. It looks bad! 3. Discard makeup that s been lying around for more than 1-2 years. It has a shelf life. 4. And above all, have fun.

Longines New Diamond Collection For Middle East
Rarity and natural beauty are the qualities that have made the diamond such a special and magical stone. And the latest watch collection from Longines, created especially for the Middle East, has this unique jewel at the heart of its stunning designs. Diamonds are a symbol of style, status and success, and are perhaps more valued in the Gulf than anywhere else in the world. A Longines diamond collection for the Middle East was therefore a natural choice. Dubai boasts the highest carat weight per diamond purchased in the world, and, incredibly, the tiny UAE emirate accounts for US$1 billion of the US$70 billion global diamond trade.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! to
EMIRATES... ARAB WORLD... THE WHOLE WORLD... By Emad Mohsen
1
Happy New Year That greeting will be said and heard for at least the first couple of weeks, as a new year gets under way. But the day celebrated as New Year s Day in modern World was not always January 1st.
n the fairly long history of humanity the celebration of New Year is found to have a prehistoric root. Since the era of the most ancient civilization different people from different parts of the world have marked A number of dates as the beginning of a new year. The diversity is due to the difference in their ethnic and cultural background. The changeover: It was the Romans who first used January 1st as the beginning of the year in 153 B.C. Prior to that March 25, the date of the vernal equinox, was celebrated as their New Year s Day. The delayed acceptance of the changed date might be due to some of its inherent difficulties as there was no Agricultural or seasonal significance was attached to it; instead, it was just a civil date, the day after the elections when the consuls would assume their new positions in the Roman Empire. The inconveniences led Julius Caesar to institute a new calendar that was devised by the Greek astronomer Sosigenes of Alexandria from the unrivaled Egyptian solar calendar. This calendar did not witness significant reforms till 1582, when Pope Gregory XII incorporated our present method of calculation and dividing the year. It was the Pope who re-instituted the practice of observing New Year s Day on January 1st. The global adoption: Catholic countries adopted it soon. Yet it took some time for the Protestants to follow suit. The Oriental countries through the influence of religious groups such as the Hindus, Taoists, Buddhists and Muslims, considered the new Calendar as the Christian Calendar, but also adopted it as their official one. The Eastern Orthodox adopted it even later, in 1924 and 1927.

FOR LUCK IN THE NEW YEAR Traditionally, it was thought that one could affect the luck they would have throughout the coming year by what they did or ate on the first day of the year. For that reason, it has become common for folks to celebrate the first few minutes of a brand new year in the company of family and friends. It was once believed that the first visitor on New Year s Day would bring either good luck or bad luck the rest of the year. It was particularly lucky if that visitor happened to be a tall dark-haired man. Traditional New Year foods are also thought to bring luck. Many cultures believe that anything in the shape of a ring is good luck, because it symbolizes coming full circle completing a year s cycle. For that reason, the Dutch believe that eating donuts on New Year s Day will bring good fortune.

The New Year Traditions around the world
The Chinese New Year is a lunar holiday that begins with the arrival of the second new moon following the winter solstice. People clean their home to escape bad luck in the upcoming year and they celebrate the first full moon with a colorful street procession, called the Festival of Lanterns. People fill the streets carrying lanterns and join a great parade led by an enormous dragon. In Korea the first day of the lunar New Year is called Sol-nal. This is for families to renew ties and prepare for the New Year. New Year s Eve: People place straw scoopers, rakes or sieves on their doors and walls to protect their families from evil spirit sin the new year. New Year s Day food includes: a bowl of rice cake soup ttokkuk. Celebration of the Japanese New Year (Oshogatsu) occurs on January 1st, as with Western nations. However, the Japanese people also observe some beliefs from their religion, called Shinto. For happiness and good luck, Japanese people hang a rope of straw across the front of their homes. Japanese people begin to laugh the moment the New Year begins, so they will have good luck the whole year. The Thai New Year festival is called Songkran and lasts for three days from 13 to 15 April according the gregorian calendar. The customs are many such as people throw water over one another, under the guise of that it will bring good rains in the coming year and all the Buddha statues or images
are washed. The Muslim New Year falls eleven days earlier than the previous year because the Muslim calendar is based on the movements of the moon. In Iran, people celebrate the New Year in March. As the New Year approaches, Muslims set grains of wheat or barley in small dishes and sprinkle them with water. When the New Year arrives, the growth of the sprouted grains reminds people of spring and a new year of life. In Egypt the New Year is a public holiday and has a very festive atmosphere. Although they know in advance when the New Year begins they still observe the custom of the new crescent moon must be seen before the official announcement is made. The sighting is carried out at the Muhammed Ali mosque, which is at the top of the hill in Cairo. The message is then passed on to the religious leader
known as the Grand Mufti and he proclaims the New Year. The men who have been waiting outside the mosque wish each other a happy New Year by saying Kol Sana We Enta Tayeb! and then go home to tell their families. Then all families sit down for a special New Year dinner. On this day even the poorest of family serves some meat. No alcohol is served because Muslims do not drink.

Food is one of the few offerings in the world that arouses so many of our senses. The sizzle, the aroma, the presentation, the texture and, most importantly, the taste. Birjees Hussain shows you how to prepare four dishes from around the globe. restaurants tantalise our senses. Shish tawouk is one of the most versatile dishes of this region and the most popular. Depending upon how it s served, it can be eaten for lunch or dinner. For lunch it s usually served in the form of a sandwich, wrapped in Arabic bread. For an evening meal it can be served on a bed of grilled vegetables or rice. Here s how to prepare it. Ingredients: 750g boneless chicken breast cut into bit size pieces 5 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp allspice powder. 1 tsp salt 3 tsp olive oil Juice of one lemon Preparation: 1. the fridge. 3. Thread the chicken onto skewers and grill over charcoal or an electric grill, occasionally basting with the marinade until thoroughly cooked. Serve with Arabic bread or rice and a side salad.
Indian
India is known for its movies, colourful clothes and spicy food. People like their food hot and every dish is eaten either with rice or chapatti. Although most authentic Indian dishes are made with real ghee, many chefs have replaced it with olive or vegetable oil. The key to achieving the right flavour is to bhoon (fry) the spices and the meat for the right amount of time to eliminate that raw spice taste. There are so many dishes that India is famous for it s difficult to choose just one. But here s one recipe that you can make using meat or chicken. Ingredients One medium chicken cut into pieces
3 medium onions chopped 5 tbsp oil 3 tbsp garlic paste 2 tbsp ginger paste 4 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp ground black pepper 4 tbsp plain yoghurt 1 clove, 5 whole black peppers, 1 cardamom and half tsp ground nutmeg Salt to taste Preparation 1. Heat oil in a pot and then brown the onions. 2. Add ginger, garlic and fry. Do not let it burn. 3. Add the coriander, the ground pepper and salt. Fry and for longer the better. Do not let the mixture burn. 4. Now add the chicken and fry until the mixture coats all the pieces. 5. Add just enough water to cover the chicken, throw in the clove and the whole peppers. Let it simmer until the water reduces. At this stage the oil should begin to separate.
Because it s cooked in the minimum amount of oil, Chinese food is known for being healthy. The essence of Chinese food is the sauces in which the dishes are marinated before cooking and those that accompany the dishes. Almost all dishes are stir-fried at high heat in a wok in the minimum amount of sesame oil. Sesame oil is dark coloured, has a nutty flavour and is the main cooking oil in most Chinese foods. When we think of Chinese food we think of spring rolls, sweet n sour chicken or beef or simply stir-fried vegetable. Cooking in a wok is simple and nutritious so here s a simple recipe for you to try. Ingredients: A selection of fresh vegetables (green peppers, baby corns, mange tout, carrots, mushroom), washed and diced and sesame seeds.

lightly salted boiling water until al dente. Drain. 6. Pour the sauce on the spaghetti and serve with grated parmesan cheese. Serve with a side salad of mixed lettuce with classic Italian dressing. Salad dressing 1 part vinegar 4 parts olive oil Tsp mustard Salt and pepper Pinch sugar Whisk until thick Although the above recipes are typical of the region they come from, you donÂ’t have to stick to them religiously. For example, the chicken in the shish taouk can be replaced by meat and the stir-fried vegetable can be bulked up with prawns, lamb or even pieces of chicken. The key to good cooking is to experiment with flavours, colours and textures and, above all, to have fun. Happy cooking and do try to visit the Global Village if you can.
Preparation 1. Dry fry the sesame seeds and set aside. 2. In a wok or a deep frying pan heat 2 tablespoons of sesame oil. Toss in the carrots, then baby corns, mange tout and then the mushrooms. Fry for 5-8 minutes. 3. Pour in some soy sauce and continue to fry. Serve hot, garnished with the dry-fried sesame seeds.
Italian
We all love Italian food. Pizzas have become a part of our daily diet but thereÂ’s more to Italian food than pizzas. Italian dishes tend to be wholesome and often made from fresh ingredients. Italy is famous for its breads, ice creams and many sauces. Some of the more popular dishes include lasagne, savoury canoli, salad dressings and spaghetti. A classic spaghetti dish is spaghetti bolognaise made from the freshest ingredients and hereÂ’s how to make it. Ingredients 1 lb mince meat 1 chopped onion 1 chopped carrot 1 stork celery, chopped 1 tsp freshly chopped oregano and 1 of parsley 1 tsp sugar and salt and pepper to taste

Where on earth can you expect to win huge chunks of gold bars, fleet of luxury cars, instant prizes, attractive shopping options with major bargains and discounts and get enthralled by celebrity entertainers year after year than at the annual Dubai Shopping Festival? Now in its 10th glorious year , the DSF has come to stay as an icon of festivities as its popularity has always increased never decreased. By Emad Mohsen

ooking back at the 1st festival of 1996, the road is paved with cherished memories. February 15 that year heralded the beginning of a new dawn – the birth of the most impressive shopping cum entertainment mega event in the Middle East. An entirely new concept, the DSF succeeded brilliantly in showcasing what cooperation between private and public sectors could do in creating a mind-boggling fete. The remarkable results were out there for everyone to see (Hotels, Restaurants, Gold Traders, Electronics Sector), it wasn’t a surprise that the business community looked forward to more festivals thus laying a strong foundation for an ever-growing business activity in the region. Today, one of the biggest beneficiaries of the event is the tourism sector. Hotels, travel agents and tour operators contribute to the selling of the Festival worldwide and it would be fair to assume that the tourism industry runs at the peak level of operation during the event with hotels reporting 100% occupancy. Inspired by the recent theme, One World, One Family, One Festival, the DSF lives up to its promise of staging the most exciting
68

fete of shopping and entertainment for the entire family. As universal brotherhood, happiness excitement, joy and adventure became a tribute to the inherent ambition and strength of the people of the United Arab Emirates. The Experience gained over the nine years of its functioning will be of immense benth efit during this 10 DSF, which will run from January
12, 2005 to February 12, 2005 under the same theme. With its packed calendar of events including performances by megastars, folk festivals, dance troupes, street performers, cultural events, in-store entertainment, the DSF 2005 will witness fresh creative inputs and innovative promotions that will go a long way in attracting more visitors to Emirates. Today, the DSF is a melting pot of cultures where people from all over the world come together as a family and enjoy the fruits of success planted by the late U.A.E President, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The organizing committee unveiled the 10 destinations of the calendar of events, which is specially designed for the 10th year celebrations. The 1st being the Global Village in its new location at Dubai land on Emirates Road, the 2nd destination is Al Shindagah Zone Events where the visitors will get a chance to know more about the UAE heritage and culture while the 3rd destination includes the Colorful Dubai Carnivals, which will bring the various DSF venues alive with entertaining activities. The 4th major destination

for the visitors of the region is the Annual Night Souq offering unbeatable prices for shoppers at the leisurely hours of the evening. The Desert Camp , known for its traditional activities forms part of the 5th destination while it s going to be Prizes Galore at the Sixth destination, which includes raffles offering huge amounts of cash, gold & cars. This particular destination is slated to change a lot of people s lives. The seventh destination are Public Parks which have various interesting activities for all age groups and nationalities, while the eighth, nine and tenth destinations are represented through three main street venues like Al Seef, Al Riqqa & Al Muraqabat which will have street performances, funfairs, sports competitions and many other
exciting attractions. The Dubai Shopping Festival is no doubt a powerful device in implementing the future vision of the emirate under the directives of HH General Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum , the Crown Prince of Dubai And UAE Defense Minister. This important annual event goes hand-in-hand with Dubai s strategic target of transferring the emirate into an international tourism destination, which is set to attract 15 million tourists by the year 2010. The shopping festival aims to play a major role in achieving this significant goal by staging one of the most spectacular events pulling in the world audience. Undoubtedly, the DSF is an excellent example of an executor of the
Government s strategic policy of establishing a strong partnership and co-operation between the public and private sectors in the country. And now lets go for our surprise, the annual Lexus Mega Raffle this time is the richest in the history of the Dubai Shopping Festival. Breaking its own record of 2 cars and Dh150,000 cash daily in the last raffle, the prize this 10th special DSF is beyond anyone s imagination. It s a mind-boggling Dhs 10,000,000. Yes, 10 million dirhams as a grand prize and three Lexus cars to be won daily for 32 days against the purchase of a Dh250 raffle ticket during the course of the festival running from January 12 to February 12, 2005.

Eid Al Adha Don t Slay in the House We Have New Carpets By Emad Mohsen
In Islam, Eid Al Adha is a day of joy, happiness, cheer & jubilation where God loves to see his benefaction on us by wearing new clothes & eating fine food without wasting or arrogance. Esprit met some different people to see how they celebrate this great occasion
9
e had a tour in Dubai city center where we 1st met a young lady & her baby girl, when we asked her about what she was doing in the center, she said that she was shopping for Al Eid , Esprit had a little chat with her and that is how it was. My name is Ghada Abdel Bassir, Egyptian & I work in the media field. As a wife & mother for 2 girls as well, I had to do my shopping early so that I don t rush in time. Al Eid means a lot to me and my family, we are used to gather in one of our houses to celebrate it in the morning then we go with the kids for a picnic. When I was younger, I used to celebrate with my parents & the whole family in Egypt but since I m here, I m missing them a lot & my husband as well because due to Ghada Abdel Bassir with her daughter

his work as a front office manager in one of the top hotels in Dubai, we rarely gather in such occasions, I wish a happy Eid & happy year to everybody. Then we met those lovely couple Husband & Wife and guess what, the man did all the talking, his name is Hussein Salah from Palestine. Hussein said that he has been living here since 3 years & when it comes to Eid Al Adha the 1st thing he thinks about is where is he going to slay the Odhia , then they gather with their friends after
the prayers as the family aren t here- . Oh my god, I was going to forget, buying some new clothes for the kids otherwise I m the one who is going to be slaughtered. I lived on the hope of celebrating such an event in Palestine & if I didn t witness such a day, I hope my kids will, happy Eid for everybody. After that we caught Youssef Al Zarouni having a chat with a friend, we asked him, what about Al Eid ? and he answered, what a religious & spiritual occasion, our traditions here in emirates are to gather with the family after the prayers & then we have lunch in the noon & that is for the 1st day, as for the 2nd one, its for my kids & wife, they have to go out somewhere and don t forget giving Eidia for the kids. And when we asked him if he is going to miss someone in this occasion, he answered without hesitation HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, God bless him in his grave. At the end of our journey, we had some rest in Chili s restaurant where we met a group of the team working there. 1st the branch manager, Sabry Bakry Abdel Baky, Egyptian, he said that every Eid there is a special organization because of the overload that we face down here. For the last 10 years, I had to pass all the
Eid Al Adha.qxd

Mahmoud Salah, Nader Bahgat, Sabry Bakry Abdel Baky occasions in the restaurant or in work in general but now I m used to that and even my family understand very well that this is my duty, as for slaying Al Odhia , the company does that on behalf of all the employees. I try to do my best to catch sometime and gather with the family after work & I really wish if I was in Egypt among my family. Friends & in my country and to all of them I say Happy EID and wish you all best of the best. Shoppers grabing Eid shopping discounts .....
Then came Mahmoud Salah, the restaurant manager, he has been working there for 5 years. Mahmoud says that he has passed all the occasions in the last 5 years here in the restaurant and as well the coming Eid , far away from family and friends & the whole amazing atmosphere for such an occasion in his country, Egypt. He says that in Egypt, even if there was an overload at work, at least you can meet your family, friends & neighbors at the end of the day, anyone whom you wish to
see, you can easily get them. Mahmoud is used to send the money of Odhia to his parents in Egypt & they slay there, as for his wishes, he hopes to see his family and get married quickly as he is intending to do so soon. And finally in a quite lovely coincidence, we asked one of the team about his feelings while waiting for Eid Al Adha and he appeared to be Nader Bahgat, Christian & in that particular day he was celebrating his own Eid , so we asked him about what he is used to do in such an occasion . Nader said, since I was a kid back there in Egypt, me and my family are used to share celebrations in all the Christian and Islamic occasions with our Muslim brothers, we eat together, enjoy together, even in Ramadan, I m always invited to iftar with my friends. The same happens here, my colleagues share with me the happiness & celebration & I do the same with them, they are my colleagues & brothers, all what I miss, the family, the traditions. Lights in the neighborhood, playing football the night before Al Eid, all of that is not available here, and you know what, when I hear my parents voice on the phone, I miss them more and more . I wish to be near them and close to God and be a good person in life. Well, that was our tour, we wish you all happy Eid & to all those who are far away from their families and countries, we say don t worry and be sure that one day you will be back and some other person will be here missing you.

Exposed headlamps, not seen on Corvettes since 1962, combine with the grille to create a stronger face on the car. The fixed Xenon HighIntensity Discharge lights provide superior lighting performance. The Corvette Convertible The 2005 Corvette features an optional power-operated soft top. An easy-tooperate manual top remains standard. Both configurations use a five-layer fabric that conceals the underlying structure for a good top-up appearance, plus it helps preserve
the car s excellent aerodynamics and reduces road noise. Power The 2005 Corvette features the new 6.0L V-8 LS2 engine based on GM s Gen IV small-block family. The car is capable of 300 km/h, faster than any production Corvette in history. It reaches zero to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, and in 4.1 seconds with the optional Z51 Performance Package, and covers the quarter-mile in 12.6 seconds at 183 km/h. Settle inside The passion of the exterior s design is reflected in an all-new interior. Even with the car s more compact exterior dimensions, the instrument panel and doors are covered with cast-skin foam-in-place trim that looks like a leather-wrapped, padded panel. It is warm and inviting and has double the life of conventional trim materials. Aluminum trim adds richness. An AM/FM radio with CD player and MP3 capability is standard. New technology enhances conventional radio reception plus an improved optional Base audio system with an in-dash sixdisc changer.
Chassis Overall vehicle weight is significantly reduced, despite mass-increasing features such as larger wheels and tyres, more robust brakes and increased body acoustics. It also delivers a quieter, more pleasing ride The car retains the hydro-formed steel rail backbone structure, which features cored composite floors, an enclosed center tunnel, rear-mounted transmission and aluminum cockpit structure. Suspension cradles, control arms, knuckles, springs, dampers, bushings, stabilizer bars and steering gear have all been redesigned. New Goodyear Extended Mobility Tires (EMT) take advantage of the latest sidewall design and compound technology for run-flat capability. Three suspension choices allow drivers to choose the setup that best suits their driving style. By Anthon Garcia Relax, watch a movie. This has been the come-on of cinema/theater-owners for the movie-going public worldwide for as long as I can remember. Watching a movie on the big screen can be quite an experience the story unfolds with larger-thanlife images and sounds that make the experience, well, cinematic. And with a steady influx of technological advances both on- and off-screen watching movies has become a truly pleasurable experience. But home entertainment systems have also advanced tremendously in recent years, churning out high-quality audio-video systems that improve viewing conditions at home. One of the interesting innovations that has created a huge impact on our home entertainment habits has been the development of a variety of broadcast services. The usual programming that we have been accustomed to is the regular broadcast by television stations, which supply a limited number of programs over which we have no control. Then Cable TV came along, giving us greater choices in terms of programming, and the added convenience of being able to catch our favorite programs especially when we miss regular timings, because they are telecast at another time. Another development is Pay-Per-View, which enables a subscriber to watch movies at the comforts of their homes; however, it takes months after cinema and DVD releases when movies are offered on a pay-per-view basis. Also, a number of high-profile boxing matches and golf tournaments are offered from time to time to pay-per-view subscribers. Digital butler A relatively new development is the video-on-demand technology, which gives viewers the capability to store, fastforward or rewind multiple video releases of TV programs. There are a variety of
86

video-on-demand systems in the market. Intelligent Homes, a distributor of leading and advanced home entertainment systems in Dubai, currently offers MAX by AMX. Playfully positioned as a digital butler, MAX provides audio and video content on demand. Compared to even the latest CD/DVD changers, which can only play one selection at a time, MAX offers users the option to play multiple CDs and DVDs in simultaneously in different rooms in a networked environment. The system is highly suited to families, who will definitely have varying preferences in music, videos and games. The beauty about
MAX is that it can multi-task, giving you maximum flexibility in fulfilling your audio-video entertainment needs, said Neil Palin, managing director, Intelligent Homes. Storing, burning and selecting movie titles can be a burdensome task, when watching a movie should be an enjoyable experience. MAX has eliminated the unnecessarily difficult process of burning, ripping, storing, searching, locating and finally selecting videos or
music, added Palin. With the digital butler, you Another alternative is the eMedia Center system from Sahm Technologies, an Emaar subsidiary. The system, configured over the Sahm Technologies IP network that serves all Emaar properties, will deliver Digital Interactive Television (iTV), Video-on-Demand (VoD), Music-onDemand (MoD), Networked Personal Video Recording (n-PVR) and Internet Multi-Media streaming. Powered by the Myrio IP Video Platform, the eMedia Center gives residential users total control over a range of entertainment services including video, music, television and games content. With this system, users will be able to choose what they want to watch, listen or play, when they want it. It liberates them fro the rigid television schedules and gives them the freedom of choice, said Arvind Bhatnagar, CEO, Sahm Technologies. eMedianet is in the process of reaching an agreement with major studios to provide the latest blockbuster movies three months after general release, which is unprecedented. are released so quickly after cinematic release. Positioned as a lifestyle enhancer, home automation systems are increasingly popular in Europe and the United States following the trend set by Microsoft chief Bill Gates who spent many millions automating his home when the technology was still in its infancy stage. Many installations, however, are stand alone systems and, although networked trials have taken place on cluster developments, Sahm s projects is believed to be the world s largest networked home enabled project, positioning Emaar residences at the forefront of advanced home entertainment systems.
Sahm expects demand for the novel system to grow rapidly with the introduction of a wider range of smart web-enabled appliances from major consumer goods manufacturers. Sahm s system, as well as Intelligent Home s MAX can be integrated into any home theater system. For Sahm s e-home system, there is the added feature of a touch panel which can control all in-home audio-visual components such as TV monitor, lighting, DVD player, projectors and music systems, while music and radio stations can be piped to multiple points around the home. Intelligent Homes offers a different system, although with similar functions. As they are lifestyle enhancers, these systems are priced on the upscale side. However, with newer technologies coming up, costs could be reduced. For those who don t have the system, the cinema is still a great alternative. But those who do have the system at home can truly enjoy the pleasure of having movies on their flat LCD monitors or wide-screen TV panels at a single command, thanks to their digital butlers.

PALMvs OCKET PC P 6
he competition between the two leading PDA platforms today Palm and Pocket PC has started plenty of debates among their advocates. Their developers are continuously trying to improve each platform. The latest versions as of this writing are Palm OS 5 and Windows 2003 Mobile, but have these tweakings produced the results consumers want? It used to be that the Palm platform was for the more laidback user with a tighter budget and simpler and more varied needs, while the Pocket PC was for power users with deeper pockets. With the developments of each product, we find that these stereotypes don t hold true anymore. Both seem to achieve a good level of competence in the fields that they are pitted against each other. Palm OS-based PDAs entered the high-end market with products positively crammed with features and Pocket PC tried to price their products competitively. So which is the ultimate king of the PDA jungle? Third Party Applications With thousands of third party applications from developers ranging from major corporations to small-time individuals who do it for a hobby, this is the field in which the Palm OS reigns. Windows is trying its best to catch up. With free tools from Microsoft, the eMbedded Visual Tools, independent developers are now finding it easier to come up with more applications for the Pocket PC. They can also add Visual Studio.NET and .NET Compact Framework to their toolbox, if they so choose. It doesn t hurt, either, that developer support and resources seem to be better on Microsoft s side of the fence. Microsoft may be changing its strategy, but Palm s simple interface and file structures may reassert their advantage. Codewarrior is a favorite for Palm developers, although this does not come for free. There are, however, other open source tools available, so this is not a prob-

lem. PalmSource may have gotten another leg up when they released the Palm Developer Studio, which is based on the Eclipse IDE platform We can expect more applications from both platforms developers and from third party developers. Palm has had the lead up until now, but with the effort that Microsoft is putting in, they may play competitively in this field yet. GUI The graphical user interface (GUI) of both OS comes from their roots. Pocket PC, born from the Windows OS, inherits most of the Windows OS GUI features, such as the Start button, the Quick Launch bar, and the System Tray. Having a PDA with this platform is pretty much like having a
mini PC in your pocket. One of the advantages is that if you are a born and bred Windows user, then you ll have little difficulty in using a Pocket PC. However, this has its disadvantages, too. You have a mini PC minus the keyboard and the mouse. The touch screen and the stylus may more than make up for the mouse, but the reason you want a Pocket PC is for you to be able to do things and input data quickly while you re on the go. This is where it gets difficult, as sometimes, the platform provides you with so many options that it takes you so many clicks and you have to provide answers to so many text fields that sometimes you think it s easier to simply get a piece of paper and transfer it to your PDA later. What is good about Pocket PC is that you have this bar on top of your screen from which you can see your programs and the start button from which you can pick your programs. Again, something like this has also been made available for Palm users by third party developers. Another problem of the Pocket PC: You can t really close a program unless you go deep into the system settings or some sort of task manager. What happens is that your program gets smart-minimized, meaning that it s actually just running in the background until a certain amount of time has elapsed. This is a problem when there are several programs running, slowing your unit down to a crawl. Palm, on the other hand, is minimalist and straightforward in its interface. There s a time and date bar and a battery indicator above the application launcher. There s practically no learning curve, as you simply can t go wrong. True, it doesn t give you as many choices as the Pocket PC, but this also means that there is less room for mistakes. This doesn t mean that it doesn t get the job done efficiently. A few clicks are enough to get things done on Palm, without having to root through many options and text fields. Bundled Applications Palm keeps it simple but functional, with

K ), we can now write it more naturally, with at least two strokes. The on-screen keyboard is an option for both platforms, and is exactly that. It s a little hard to use, though, and definitely not a time saver when you need to have excellent hand-eye coordination to be able to tap on the correct letters, or else you ll be hitting the backspace button all day. Pocket PC, aside from the keyboard, gives you three other choices: Block Recognizer, Letter Recognizer, and Microsoft Transcriber. With three such options, you d expect something wonderful. They do their job, but somehow fall short of what Graffiti 2 can offer. Block Recognizer, which is like Graffiti, isn t all that accurate, and there s only one way of writing letters for it. Transcriber, which gives you real handwriting recognition, sounds great but doesn t live up to what it should be able to do. It gives you an option to make it fast but with a lot of inaccuracies, or the other only way around and all the settings in between. The future is bright for the the basics such as Transcriber, however, if they make a few To Do, Address Book, Calendar or Date improvements here and there. Book, Calculator, and Notepad built into Meanwhile, Pocket PC gives us predictive the system, along with the ever essential text, where you can type in a couple of letpreferences and security togglers and the ters of a word and it will give you the posapplication launcher. They don t offer sible words that start with the letters much in terms of versatility or a wide you ve written. This means that you don t range of options, but they get the job done have to write down the whole word, so quick and easy. As mentioned, the inter- data entry won t be that big a problem. face is very straightforward, so a few taps Predictive text, though, can also be acquired for your Palm unit again, from with your stylus should be sufficient. The other side of the fence, however, gives third parties. everything that Palm does, but throws in a Synchronization few beautiful extras: Media Player, Image Synchronization has always been a probViewer, Word Processor, Spreadsheet lem for both Palm and Pocket PC, but Program, and Games. One of the winning they have been working hard at resolving aspects of Pocket PC is Today. You can set this, and it shows. Pocket PC has only it up so that when you open your PDA, one sync manager, ActiveSync, with Today is the first thing that you see. This is which it is bundled. The idea of somewhat an extension of Outlook. Here, ActiveSync is that you put your PDA your PDA will remind you of your To Do s, in the cradle and it automatically appointments in your Calendar, and any syncs with your PC. The problem lies in the fact that ActiveSync gets conunread mail messages. Data Input fused about what to sync, giving Palm has on its side Graffiti 2 and an on- you duplicated contacts and doing screen keyboard. Graffiti 2 is based on Jot strange things to your mail. from Communications Intelligence Palm has not only HotSync, but a Corporation, with more natural character host of third party applications recognition by allowing users to use (e.g., IntelliSync) ready to come multi-stroke characters in [the] input to the rescue should HotSync be area. This means that instead of memo- less than what you hoped for. rizing the Graffiti version of characters HotSync, though lacking the that have only one stroke (e.g., the letter automatic synching (you have
to press a button on the cradle), is better at sorting. This may be attributed to the fact that Palm has a simpler file system than Pocket PC. Of course, this means that you can t organize your files into folders or put just any file into your PDA (which you can do with Pocket PC), but it also means that there s quite less confusion between your PC and your PDA. Conclusion Pocket PC is definitely feature-rich and has more power. A great OS? Most definitely. However, as of now, it seems to me that Palm is the better choice. Even though they share practically the same market nowadays, most Palm products are still priced relatively lower. You can get most of the things that Pocket PC can give you through third party developers, which really is the best thing about it. The user interface is also a winner. Not too many things on the screen to distract you, and, as I said, it gets things done with little effort. Still, some people might prefer the crisp and corporate look of the Pocket PC. What may be in question, however, is how long Palm can maintain its advantage, because Pocket PC is playing catch up in the third-party applications game. When it does, then it will be time to rethink my decision. For now, I ll stick with Palm.

Having gone through the 2nd lesson, Ibrahim Assi takes us rd through a 3 round of photography. Shutter Speed In photography, shutter speed is the time for which the shutter is held open during the taking of a photograph to allow light to reach the film. In combination with variation of the lens aperture, this regulates how exposed the film will be. A fast shutter speed demands a larger aperture to avoid under-exposure, just as a slow shutter speed is offset by a very small aperture to avoid over-exposure. Shutter speed is measured in seconds. A typical shutter speed for photographers taken in sunlight is 1/125th of a second. Very short shutter speeds are used to freeze fast-moving subjects, for example at sporting events. Very long shutter speeds are used in low-light conditions such as night or to intentionally blur a moving subject for artistic effect. In early days of photography, available shutter speeds were somewhat ad hoc, standardized 2:1 scale was adopted, which can be extended at either end: 1/1000 s 1/500 s 1/250 s 1/125 s 1/60 s 1/30 s 1/15 s 1 /8 s 1 /4 s 1 /2 s 1s B Keep the shutter open as long as the release lever is engaged. T Keep the shutter open until the lever is pressed again. The ability of the photographer to take images without noticeable blurring by camera movement is an important parameter in the choice of slowest possible shutter speed for a handheld camera. The rough guide used by most 35mm pho-
90
January 2005
tographers is that the slowest possible shutter speed that can be used with great care is the shutter speed numerically closest to the lens focal length. Ex: for a handheld use of a 35mm camera with a 50mm normal lens, the closest shutter speed is 1/60 s. Note that using this with great care would normally mean bracing the camera, arms or body to minimize camera movement. For a freestanding, unsupported photographer it is usual-
ly necessary to use the next fastest shutter speed which would be 1/125 s in this case. Other 35mm handheld examples are: - 28mm wide-angle lens, 1/30 s may be used with care and 1/60 s is advised. 105 medium telephoto lens, 1/125 s may be used with care and 1/250 s is advised. 300mm long telephoto lens, 1/250 s may be used with care and 1/500 s is advised. In cinematography, shutter speed is a function of the frame rate and shutter

angle. Most motion picture film cameras use a rotating shutter with a shutter angle of 170ยบ to 180ยบ which leaves the film exposed for about 1/48 or 1/50 second at a standard 24 fps speed. Angle of view In photography, angle of view is the size of the image on the film. Angle of view is affected by choice of lens; wideangel lenses get considerably wider angle of view than telephoto lenses; with e.g. a fisheye lens recording up to 180ยบ of a scene and the longest lenses tend to magnify the subject, compressing distance and (when focused on the foreground) blurring the background because of their shallower depth of field. Wider lenses tend to magnify distance between objects while allowing greater depth of field. One result of using a wide angel lens in close proximity to the subject is an apparent perspective distortion : parallel lines may appear to converge; with a fisheye lens, straight edges will appear to bend.
An example of how lens choice affects angle of view. The photos above were taken by a 35mm camera. Focal lengths from top to bottom: 28mm, 50mm, 70mm, and 210mm. For a non-distorting, regular (non-fisheye) lens, the angel of view (a) can be calculated from the film dimension (d), and effective focal length (f), thus: The effective focal length of the length can be set equal to the focal length (f), except in macro photography where the magnification (m) must be taken into account.

D U B A I A Grand Vision Takes Shape FESTIVAL CITY
,
ubai Festival City is destined to be the new heart of the city, inviting you to come live, work, shop and play, amidst a place of life, vibrance and tranquility. Stretching 4 kilometres along the historic Creek, Dubai Festival City is a blend of land and water distinguished by canals, waterfalls, pools and fountains. A destination combining a world-class and unmatched mix of entertainment, dining and shopping. It is the embodiment of the vision of His Highness, General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister. Respectful of the past and derived from the present, Dubai Festival City represents the vision of the future and aims to create a sense of place for the emirate s residents and visitors. Dubai Festival City is the Middle East s largest mixed-use development that is, the project is designed to include all the elements necessary for people to live, work and play in a vibrant, attractive and unique environment. The development will comprise a unique mix of entertainment, dining, shopping, edutainment, sport and leisure facilities, automotive dealerships, hotels, a marina, residential and office components. For sporting enthusiasts, Al Badia Golf Resort, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by world-renowned golf course

designer Robert Trent Jones II LLC and other world-class sporting facilities are also being incorporated in the project. The entire project is envisioned to take approximately 12 years (to 2015) to complete. However, by the time the first phase is completed in 2006, Dubai Festival City would have had the Festival Centre, a 2.4 million square foot meeting place designed for the people of Dubai to shop, dine, relax and live. The Centre will have the following features: a spectacular Marina with yacht side moorings; interactive Canal with water taxi transport; a boulevard with 20 international flagship stores; a Festival Square, which will be a venue for world-class entertainment and performances; over 400 retail outlets from around the world; over 100 international restaurants; a 600 luxury room hotel managed by the InterContinental and a Waterfornt promenade. Recently, Four Seasons signed up to manage another hotel facility. Another anticipated highlight is the completion of the opulent and undoubtedly world-class Al Badia Golf Resort, an 18hole championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones II, differentiated by its oasis-style theme set in the heart of the city. The project spans 3.8 kilometres of water frontage on the eastern bank of Dubai Creek, the lively waterway at the heart of the city and one of the world s oldest sea-
ports. The Dubai Creek is a vivid reminder of the long sea-going tradition of this Arabian port and represents not only Dubai s geographical centre, but also its birthplace from which the modern emirate emerged. Adjacent to the course, are the Al Badia Golf Resort Residential homes. The course s residential offering is a mix of townhouses and apartments all with superb views of the fairways, lakes and greens; the first phase of housing is complete and has been occupied since August 2004. Schools form an important component of the community facilities that will populate Dubai Festival City. The first two schools, one of which will follow the American educational system and the second the British curriculum, will open their doors in 2005. The development will reinvigorate the Garhoud district of Dubai. It will draw on its proximity, (only 2 kilometres), to the emirate s international airport and its unique stretch of waterfront to deliver a new vibrancy and sense of community to

BIG ON BOOKS The Rule of Four
Princeton. Good Friday, 1999. On the eve of graduation, two students are a hairsbreadth from solving the mysteries of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. Famous for its hypnotic power over those who study it, the five-hundred-year-old Hypnerotomachia may finally reveal its secrets to Tom Sullivan, whose father was obsessed with the book, and Paul Harris, whose future depends on it. As the deadline looms, research has stalled until an ancient diary surfaces. What Tom and Paul discover inside shocks even them: proof that the location of a hidden crypt has been ciphered within the pages of the obscure Renaissance text. Armed with this final clue, the two friends delve into the bizarre world of the Hypnerotomachia a world of forgotten erudition, strange sexual appetites, and terrible violence. But just as they begin to realize the magnitude of their discovery, Princeton s snowy campus is rocked: a longtime student of the book is murdered, shot dead in the hushed halls of the history department. A tale of timeless intrigue, dazzling scholarship, and great imaginative power, The Rule of Four is the story of a young man divided between the future s promise and the past s allure, guided only by friendship and love.
State of Fear
Once again Michael Crichton gives us his trademark combination of pageturning suspense, cutting-edge technology, and extraordinary research. State of Fear is a superb blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense and thought provoking commentary on how information is manipulated in the modern world. From the streets of Paris, to the glaciers of Antarctica to the exotic and dangerous Solomon Islands, State of Fear takes the reader on a roller coaster thrill ride, all the while keeping the brain in high gear.
London Bridges
Any thriller writer, want to be or actual, would do well to study Patterson s 10th Alex Cross novel. A sequel to last year s The Big Bad Wolf, the book is a model of economy, delivering a full package of suspense, emotion and characterization in a minimum number of words. The story brings back not only Big Bad Wolf s arch-villain, the Russian mobster known as the Wolf, but also an earlier Patterson bad guy, the Weasel, recruited by the Wolf to further his plans. These involve extorting Western powers for billions of dollars to avoid major terrorist attacks on New York, London, Washington and Frankfurt attacks the Wolf offers a preview of by wiping out a town in Nevada by aerial bombardment after hustling its citizens to safety, then by doing the same to a village in England without evacuating the populace. The novel features numerous exciting scenes, most notably one in which Cross is kidnapped, then shackled to a suitcase atomic bomb. It s not the steady tension, the numerous colorful locales, the reliable action climaxes nor the novel s effective doomsday gloss that makes this thriller work so well.

Species of Bugs
Surveillance transmitters come in many different configurations. Some of them are : · Crystal-controlled or variable-frequency. · AM. FM. or digital spread spectrum (DSS). · Analog or digital · Room audio. Phone conversation. Or both · Powered by batteries. The phone LINE, OR THE POWER LINE · Single-stage or multistage · High power or low power · Low frequency to microwave So, theoretically, you could have, multistage, high-power, crystal-controlled FM transmitters that operates in the high VHF area of the spectrum. Or a single stage variable frequency, low power transmitter that operates on the commercial FM hand. Or various combinations of the above each type has its advantages and disadvantages, but obviously you can t have everything in a single transmitter. So there are trade-offs. High-power transmitters have greater range but require larger batteries. Low power are usually smaller (and the batteries a lot smaller) and so are easier to hide but will have less range. Crystal-controlled bugs are very stable and often have better audio but are usually more expensive. FM results in better sound quality, but AM gives better range for the same amount of power. Spread spectrum transmitters can be difficult to detect with countermeasures equipment but are expensive and not easy to get.
