What are the essential qualities that you always implement in your products? My education is rational, I studied with Zanuso and Castiglioni

Massimo Castagna
Can you tell us about your design experience for Henge? How do you incorporate the brand’s design philosophy and yours into products? Henge was born after six months of meetings with Paolo Tormena. We
never talked about the product but we tried to figure out what we would have liked to have in our houses: Furniture is like a travel companion
that stays with us for a long time. Every day it should give you the same pleasure as the very first time. We followed our wishes overcoming the market conditioning as a lot of people actually did. And that was when we understood what Henge should have been. The products followed right after.
How do you think modern technology and the environment affect your judgment in design? And how do you keep up to date with current trends? Technology is part of and influences our lives and we can’t leave it
out of consideration. It can help but on the contrary it emphasizes our need for expressiveness and art.
In your opinion, how do you balance architecture and interiors to create a dynamic design? Architecture, interior design, and design are so connected they tell one
story, influencing each other. When I start a project with no restrictions
or obligations, I like to work on different levels at the same time always looking for the most expressiveness.

DESIGNER’S CORNER
SANTI ALAYSIUS & HAMPHREY TEDJA Operating with a singular vision to create functional, livable, and uplifting spaces for the fullest enjoyment of life, Santi Alaysius and Hamphrey Tedja of Domisilium Studio dedicate to tailor their every project to unique individual needs and aesthetic values. In this exclusive interview, we get up close and personal with their life as designers.
As an interior designer, what’s your typical workday like? Santi : It depends. Sometimes we wake up and get stuck doing phone calls until 10-11 AM before going to the office.
Sometimes we have a very peaceful morning and we can be at the
office as early as 8 AM. Sometimes we do site visits. Sometimes we work from home. Our days are quite colorful.
If you could describe your personal design style, what would they be? Santi : For interior and architecture. I love things that are classical.
I like clean transitional design with a bold-looking modern furniture. For the colors, I like things that are contrasting. For example, a vibrant sofa with a really neutral background.
Hamphrey : Emptiness. Clean, neat, and quiet look where things are hidden. I’m quite utilitarian. I don’t need frivolous decor. I think the only decor that I really like is artworks that I have collected over the years.

Could you tell us your personal experience with MOIE? How is it like collaborating with us for your projects? Santi : I love it, it’s so easy. I like how Michelle helping us out with
pursuing the clients. Michelle and the team are persistent and very patient. We show her the 3D layout and ask for help to choose the furniture and she does it amazingly.
Hamphrey: I think our first experience with MOIE was for one of our first projects. We went to MOIE Kemang and met up with Michelle about 12
years ago. She’s been so helpful and nice. She helps giving suggestions and ideas. Working with MOIE makes our work as designer a lot easier. She
knows our styles, and knows what’s good for us. She can read our design and match it with our brand personalities.
Hamphrey : It’s proportion for me. As an interior designer,
sometimes we inherit the layout from the architect, and proportionwise it can be lost in translation which means, we have to read just the layout. I think that’s one of the challenges that we have to deal with in a lot of our work. Proportions affects the overall design.
What is your favorite room to design and why? Hamphrey : I think what we love doing is creating public places. We like creating communal experiences where everyone can enjoy the space. So that’s why we love doing hospitality, retail, and commercials.
Santi : If we can choose from the residential perspective, it would be the
kitchen. I personally like a kitchen that can entertain crowds. A kitchen that merges with the living room. For me, the kitchen is the heart of the house.
When I was in the US, I liked having my friends come over and hang out in the kitchen. We always entertain people around the kitchen.
Hamphrey : I agree. The kitchen is where people gather and it’s a good
meeting point. That’s why your kitchen should be nice. We both cook as
well. So, the kitchen is probably one of my favorite places to design as well as hanging out because we use it that often. The food is the center of the
Santi : Natural light. Most buildings in Indonesia only have one
façade instead of multiples like what they have in the US. It’s really important to have access to natural light and ventilation, especially in this pandemic.
Hamphrey : Translating the client’s needs can be tricky too as they
don’t quite understand if something is not the best option for them.
For example, they want a high ceiling to make the room feels cooler and make the bedroom in the second floor. I have this experience with a few of my clients and relatives, coming up and down the
stairs in many years later will be challenging for them. At the end
of the day, it all comes down to proportion, I think sometimes lower ceiling makes the space more intimate. Santi : It’s energy and cost saving too!
activities. Kitchen can show a lot of personalities too as we get to interact
with people there. We love having a nice kitchen. We love a good kitchen.
